Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
Tumblr media
I went out to add water to the ollas of the “cucumber growing system” and my box of chicks was just sitting there! No idea how long it had been there as I didn’t get a call. This is not normal procedure for my post office—when I’ve gotten chicks in the past they call around 7:30am and I have to go pick them up at the carrier annex. Not sure if things changed because of the pandemic or if my carrier was just being nice.
But!
Everyone was alive and active and doing great! My anxiety was starting to ramp up because the temps were climbing sooner than they were supposed to—when I didn’t get the call this morning I started to worry. But all is well! They’re running around the two guinea pig cages I’m using for temporary brooders (just for a few days so I can observe closely for issues). The legbars get gold stars for figuring everything out first—drinking, eating, and scooting under the suspended heating pad to get warm.

They even look sharper than the other breeds.

Okay maybe not this one. :-D
Here are two of the Midnight Majesty Marans with their feathered legs:

And here are some of the Sapphire Gems:

And here’s a sleepy chickie about to beak-plant:

I’ll get better pictures later when the light is better. Right now I’ve got to go “observe them for shipping stress” aka go squee over my chicks.

Cream Legbar vs Crested Legbar: Which Breed Lays the Most Beautiful Eggs
Introduction to Cream and Crested Legbars The Cream Legbar is a breed of chicken that originated in England. It was developed by Reginald Appleyard in 1920, with the goal of creating a bird that would lay blue eggs. The Crested Legbar, on the other hand, also hails from England but has been around for much longer than its cream-colored cousin. Both breeds are known for their distinctive…

I hope you know your chick/egg posts gave me the human broodiness and... now I have roughly 60+ chicks. I blame you /j (I hatched from roughly 2 dozen yard bird eggs and 2 doz each of CCL, third gen olive eggers, and BCM)
Uh oh, guess it’s contagious! Sorry everyone! /lh
I seriously am feeling that human broodiness thing, I’m thinking of the eggs every second and don’t even wanna leave the house - I can’t imagine how bad it’ll get once they start pipping. I imagine next weekend I won’t leave their side at all, so I’m making sure I have extra groceries and stuff so I won’t have to! And every day I look at a chart I found that shows what they look like and how they’re developing inside the egg.
Also, a CCL is a Crested Cream Legbar, right? I had to google it, lol. Have you had them before? What are they like? I really considered getting some, they look really cute and iirc the breeder I got my eggs from has them. Plus I’d love more colored egg layers. And Marans too, I’d like some of those someday too, what’s their personality like if you’ve had them before?

The chicks are getting so big! Sampson and Teryaki have been teaching them well. I've ended up with 3 hens and a rooster.
The little roo is quite interesting. He has a marking type that I've never seen before (half white middle toes).I was considering selling any roos that hatched, but I may keep this one at least a year to see how he grows.
I'm also considering getting more Crested cream legbars to breed to Sampson, his son Tim, and his daughter Cookie along with at least the gold hen. She looks the most like Cookie.
I'll be trying to breed to Cookie's standard. I've come up with a breed name as well. The Sugar Cookie Egger.
Another possible breeding project for me will be an Americana/Easter egger type bird to create a true breeding line of heavy foraging, flighty, good laying, predator smart birds. Preferably in whitetail deer brown for good camouflage. I'll be calling this breed The Deerhen.

More chick pics! They’re 9 days old today and everyone is busy producing juvenile feathers, mostly on wing tips, but a few have some laughable attempts at tails too.

I mean check out that teeny little butt-duster! And look at this pretty coloration:

A friend of mine recently finished building her first chicken coop ever. Her city finally caved and now allows residents to keep up to three laying hens. I helped her pick breeds and a breeder, and bought her a dozen eggs from a local source. The white eggs are frizzle polish (which should hatch some frizzle and some smooth coat birds), the blue ones are crested cream legbars (which are smaller than EE birds, closer in size to the polish but still lay blue), and the brown ones are from an EE cross that should lay olive eggs.
I'll be hatching them at my house (alongside my next quail group), and turning them over as soon as they hatch. I'm also going to do the banding and blood draws for sexing them, so she can bring the roosters back to me early, and focus on getting the hens attention and cuddles from her kids. I'm hoping she gets at least 1 hen from each set of eggs, but if not that's ok. I'm also hoping at least 1 of the polish is frizzle for her.
The roosters will probably go to a friend and I'll likely get the other hen chicks to folks locally, since we're pretty done with chickens. But it'll be fun to have babies for a couple of days!

okay im considering buying an ILT-vaccinated pullet 😓 the smallest recomended flock-size for chickens is 3, and I don’t want my pair to be like.....socially under stimulated for the next 6-ish years.
the only local place I can find that sells pre-juiced birds is Blazing Colours farm, and these are their breeds: Copper Marans, Cream Crest Legbar, Silverudd Isbar, Whiting True Blue, Birchen Marans and Emerald Olive, Ameraucana, and Ayam Cemani
my mom has Cream Crested Legbars, so no thanks to those - Henny and Perchy are already functionally identical, and I don’t want to be grabbing the wrong bird when I return back from family visits
Tumblr media
of the remaining breeds, the Ameraucana
Tumblr media
and Ayam Cemani
Tumblr media
are the most interesting. I’m a bit worried about the size difference (Blazing Colours doesn’t have any giant breeds), but Anzu and Tallgeese always got along with tiny Yennefer quite well. still thinking things over

One of my easter eggers is developing a little strip of extra fluffy down down the middle of her head. I've seen some easter eggers with feather crests, and know Polishes have little down puffs as chicks so I was wondering if this might mean my easter egger chick will be crested?
The bump on polish chicks heads isnt fluff! Its their vaulted skull/their hernia if you were to poke the bump you can usually tell it isnt just fluff
But your easter eggers were likely made from a cross with a Cream Legbar (a pure breed that lays blues eggs) which is a crested chicken breed. The crest of a legbar is different then the ones polish and silkies have and isnt caused by a hernia. It can vary from just a silly little poof to a small mullet and to a mohawk.
