Nalo Hopkinson’s “Blackheart Man”
I'm OFFLINE UNTIL MID-SEPTEMBER, but you can catch me in person at BURNING MAN! On TUESDAY (Aug 27) at 1PM, I'm giving a talk called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE!" at PALENQUE NORTE (7&E). On WEDNESDAY (Aug 28) at NOON, I'm doing a "Talking Caterpillar" Q&A at LIMINAL LABS (830&C).
In Blackheart Man, the new Nalo Hopkinson novel out today from Simon & Schuster, we get a tour-de-force from an author in full control of her prodigious powers: a story that will make you drunk on language, on worldbuilding, and on its roaring, relentless plot:
https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Blackheart-Man/Nalo-Hopkinson/9781668005101
The action is set on Chynchin, a fantastic Caribbean island(or maybe Caribbeanesque – it's never clear whether this is some magical, imaginary world, or some distant future of our own). Chynchin is a multiracial, creole land with a richly realized gift economy that Hopkinson deftly rounds out with a cuisine, languages, and familial arrangements. Blackheart Man boasts some of the finest "in-cluing" (Jo Walton's marvelous term for the way that sf/f writers can assemble a world in their readers' minds with subtle clues that act as a made-to-be-solved puzzle the reader delights in assembling) you could ask for, and before you know it, you've completely internalized this world, with its racial politics, its cultural institutions (like the colloquium, where every scholar is also a musician and getting your doctorate requires scoring a book to be sung – and thus memorized and preserved by a choir of your fellow students), and its relationships (the stable configuration is a thruple, with most women married to two co-husbands).
Chynchin was founded through a slave rebellion, in which the press-ganged soldiers of the iron-fisted Ymisen empire were defeated by three witches who caused them to be engulfed in tar that they magicked into a liquid state just long enough to entomb them, then magicked back into solidity. For generations, the Ymisen have tolerated Chynchin's self-rule, but as the story opens, a Ymisen armada sails into Chynchin's port and a "trade envoy" announces that it's time for the Chynchin to "voluntarily" re-establish trade with the Ymisen.
The story that unfolds is a staple of sf and fantasy: the scrappy resistance mounted against the evil empire, and this familiar backdrop is a sturdy scaffold to support Hopkinson's dizzying, phantasmagoric tale of psychedelic magic, possessed children, military intrigue, musicianship and sexual entanglements.
Hopkinson's protagonist Veycosi is the kind of flawed hero whom you want to give a hug to half the time, and whose neck you want to wring. An aspiring scholar, Veycosi has the brash certainty of youth, convinced that he's the smartest (and sexiest) man in any room, and he's right just often enough to encourage him in a series of self-inflicted catastrophes that build to a terrible crescendo that sets up one of the most satisfying endings you could ask for.
Hopkinson – a SFWA Grand Master and Macarthur Genius Grant awardee – is justly famed as one of the field's great afrofuturist pioneers. Her prodigious talent has been obvious since her debut novel, Brown Girl In the Ring, and her career is an unbroken string of literary feats that went from strength to strength. I've known her since we were both teenagers working at the same library in suburban Toronto, and I never cease to be dazzled by her talent, her wit, and her warmth. But even by those high standards, Blackheart Man is a triumph.
On SEPTEMBER 24th, I'll be speaking IN PERSON at the BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY!!

Hiii, I've got an ask for you 🫣
What is the most interesting end for Mizu in your opinion and if you could guess, what do you think the writers will do?
1. Doomed by the narrative all the way (her story starts sad and ends in a even bigger inevitable tragedy)
2.She gets what she wants but will never find true happiness (maybe lose someone she loves in the way)
3.Gets what she wants and finds contentment and even happiness.
Secret fourth opition?
Hope you are well😁
Hiiiii <3 <3
OOOH this is an interesting one, and right out the gate I would 100% immediately choose Option 3 here, which is that Mizu gets what she wants and finds happiness and contentment.
Now I am a SUCKER for tragedy and bittersweet endings, they are soooo juicy like don't get me wrong (the novel manuscript I'm working on is literally a doomed-by-the-narrative type story!) but in my opinion, though all stories can be tragedies, not all stories necessarily should be.
This is because a story's ending, and what makes an ending satisfactory, is heavily reliant on the promise that it sets at the very beginning.
A narrative promise is essentially what the story is telling us to expect when we start the first episode or read the first chapter or click the start button on a game. As such, the promise is usually given to us in two primary ways.
First is the story's tone. What sort of language does it use? What sort of art direction does it employ? Its music, its camera angles?
In BES, the story starts off with some dynamic long shots of Mizu walking with her back turned to the camera through the snow, the wind whooshing and dramatic music in the background, while words fade in and out on the screen:
In 1633, Japan closed its borders to the outside world. Citizens would never see a white face, nor any face that was not Japanese. A child born mixed race would be considered less than human. Pitiable. Monstrous. From these times rose a legend. Of a swordsman. Of a sword. Of revenge.
The music ends in an epic crescendo. Cue title screen.
From the above line, we can already see that the tone is that of a dramatic, epic, action-filled story about revenge. From that first scene, we see Mizu's confrontation with Hachi, and from this we already see the promise that this is a heavily-stylised action martial arts series that will be violent and gritty.
On that note, its fight sequences also follow video game logic a lot of times, and overallm a lot of things are not very realistic or necessarily 100% historically-accurate. This, together with a lot of casual dialogue and humour littered throughout, makes it a story that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's rather blockbuster-ish in that sense, and while very well written and rife with beautiful imagery, symbolism, and nuanced characters and themes, it is not intended to be high literary work by any means.
And while Mizu's backstory is indeed very tragic, the story we see in the present is very tonally different, chock-full of one liners and silly lines (thank you, Ringo and Taigen, my silly boys, for that) as well as flashy action scenes and montages set to rock music. The tonal shift between the past and present stories is also in part what makes The Tale of the Ronin and the Bride stand out so prominently among the 8 episodes.
Besides the tone, a story also delivers its the promise through its character arc, which is presented to the audience by showing us a variety of things related to the protagonist, such as:
what the character is missing in their life: for Mizu, it is love and acceptance;
their desires: revenge, because as we see from her backstory, she has been unable to obtain love/acceptance;
what's preventing them from achieving it: Mizu adamantly believes that she is a monster who is not capable of loving or being loved, and this is why she pushes Ringo and Taigen away in present day;
and their flaws: Mizu is stubborn, narrow-minded, and is driven purely by hate and anger. Taigen tells the viewers this very clearly in Ep7 when he says she's killing Fowler "Not for honour. For hate." And also in Ep8 when he says to Ringo, "Mizu doesn't care about anyone but himself and his revenge." Mizu's "ember" is her anger and desire for vengeance.
Thus, from all this, we can come to a conclusion that the show's promise is something along the lines of
Mizu gets her revenge +
Mizu unlearns her self-hatred and stops letting her anger be the only thing guiding her +
Mizu stops running from people who care about her so she can finally get the love and acceptance she's always craved.
IMO, only by fulfilling all three of these promises would the story have a satisfying payoff.
Whether the revenge will be directed to the white men, though, is up for debate, as there are a lot of theories going around that maybe the white men aren't as evil as she thought and none of them are even her fathers, that Mizu's true enemy is Lady Itoh and the shogunate, etc. The third point, regarding love and acceptance, is also a point of discourse, because we don't know who she'll end up with, or if she'll end up with anyone romantically at all, whereby the story opts to make it an open ending focusing on platonic/found-family bonds rather than any romantic one.
Whatever the case, it doesn't necessarily matter, and I'm open to pretty much all directions the writers may take us as long as SOME revenge is achieved, blood is spilled, colonisers get their dues, AND Mizu gets to be loved and happy.
BUT if you ask me for my ideal version of that payoff... I think it's no surprise to anyone when I say I want Mizu to live a nice peaceful and secluded life, in which all her past adventures fade into myth and legend (as implied in the opening text).
Because while I'm almost certain Mizu is related to some royal or important bloodline, I don't think Mizu would find happiness in a life in the palace. She has never wanted greatness, has never even hinted at wanting power or anything like it. She craves belonging and the freedom to be herself, and to be loved for all her flaws and dualities. These are things she needs to grow and be a better person as well. A life of politics and intrigue inherent in being a royal heir, or in being a samurai loyal to the shogunate (even if it is under Akemi's future administration) would offer no such freedom or sense of peace for Mizu.
So yeah! Peace and quiet and happiness, maybe living on a farm like she did with Mikio. But of course that life wouldn't mean anything if she were to live it alone, because remember she wants and needs love and belonging. As such, I think the one most suited to give her that would be Taigen (for a variety of reasons).
This life could be with or without their bestie Ringo, depending on if Ringo decides to travel and find his own greatness, and it is implied that Ringo does leave Mizu's side to go on his own adventures, as hinted by the creators wanting a spin-off centered around him.
And also Mizu and Taigen go to visit their mutual ex-girlfriend Akemi sometimes for like special occasions or something.
I hope that answered your question, and thank you so much for the ask!! <3 <3 And on that note, my inbox is open for more if anyone else would like to pick my brain about this show, or anything else for that matter really. I may take a while to answer them considering how in-depth I like to go on these, but I love getting any and all these asks regardless :)

✶ Life in Sinfonia
Agriculture
In Sinfonia, agriculture is an art, a symphony of flavours orchestrated by the skilled hands of farmers who have perfected the craft of cultivating the land. Sinfonia's fertile fields and sun-kissed vineyards yield an abundance of crops and fruits, celebrated for their quality and taste. Rolling hills are adorned with terraced vineyards, where luscious grapes are carefully nurtured to produce the nation's renowned wines, each bottle a testament to generations of winemaking expertise. Olive groves dot the landscape, their silver leaves shimmering in the sunlight, producing the finest olive oils that add a touch of Sinfonian essence to every dish. Wheat fields sway gracefully in the breeze, supplying the grains essential for crafting the perfect pasta, a staple of Sinfonian cuisine. Orchards bloom with citrus fruits and figs, their sweet melodies blending seamlessly with the aroma of freshly baked pastries. Agriculture in Sinfonia is not merely a means of sustenance; it's a celebration of nature's bounty, where every harvest tells a story of tradition, meticulous care, and the harmonious relationship between the land and its stewards.
Architecture
The echoes of Renaissance resonate through the architectural marvels that grace the cities and towns, weaving a tapestry of elegance and grandeur. Inspired by the opulence of Renaissance Sinfonia, architects have crafted buildings adorned with ornate facades, intricate marble carvings, and arched windows that allow sunlight to dance upon polished floors. The Palazzo Sinfonia Grande²⁷, the heart of the nation, boasts majestic domes and towering spires, a tribute to the nation's love for music and the arts. Palatial residences with frescoed ceilings and gardens adorned with classical sculptures stand as a testament to the affluence of the aristocracy. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through the cities, lined with charming boutiques and artisan workshops, each building an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Vine-covered villas overlook rolling hills, their terracotta roofs blending harmoniously with the lush landscape. Every arch, every column, and every intricate detail in Sinfonia's architecture tells a story of artistic brilliance, cultural sophistication, and the enduring spirit of Renaissance elegance.
Education
Education is a revered tradition, echoing the intellectual fervour of Renaissance Sinfonia. Inspired by the scholars and polymaths of the age, Sinfonian education is a holistic journey that nurtures young minds and cultivates brilliance. The nation's modern scholars, much like their Renaissance counterparts, emphasize the pursuit of knowledge in diverse fields such as music theory, fine arts, philosophy, and literature - thus heavily mirroring and opposing the scientific research branches of Sumeru's Akademiya. Academies, adorned with grand libraries and lined with classical art, serve as centers of learning where passionate students engage in spirited debates, hone their artistic talents, and explore the depths of human creativity. Renowned maestros and scholars are invited to mentor the gifted, imparting wisdom that spans generations.
Sinfonia's education system places a strong emphasis on classical studies, with students delving into the works of ancient philosophers, poets, and musicians. The vibrant exchange of ideas in academies and the nurturing of creativity foster a culture where innovation and artistic expression flourish. The Grand Conservatory of Arts and Letters, akin to the esteemed institutions of Sumeru's Akademiya, stands as a beacon of intellectual enlightenment, where the brightest minds gather to push the boundaries of knowledge.
Apprenticeships are highly valued, allowing aspiring musicians, artists, and craftsmen to learn their trade under the guidance of masters, passing down centuries-old techniques and fostering a sense of artistic lineage. Sinfonia's education is not merely a means to an end but a lifelong pursuit, a symphony of learning and discovery that shapes the nation's cultural landscape and ensures the legacy of brilliance endures through the ages.
Cuisine
The nation's culinary landscape is a masterpiece. In this gastronomic haven, every meal is a symphony of flavours, a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation that tantalizes the taste buds and warms the soul.
Sinfonian cuisine is characterized by its emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. Vine-ripened tomatoes, fragrant basil, and golden olive oil are the cornerstones of many dishes, infusing each bite with the essence of the sun-kissed countryside. Pasta, handcrafted with love and expertise, takes centre stage, adorned with rich sauces that tell tales of centuries-old recipes passed down through generations.
The local seafood delights are a testament to its coastal charm. Freshly caught fish, brimming with the essence of the sea, find their way to the tables, transformed into exquisite dishes that capture the maritime spirit. Succulent shellfish and tender calamari, expertly prepared and seasoned, reflect the nation's love affair with the ocean.
But Sinfonia's culinary repertoire extends far beyond pasta and seafood. Hearty risottos, fragrant with saffron and studded with seasonal vegetables, delight the senses. Artisanal cheeses, aged to perfection, grace platters alongside local olives and crusty bread, inviting indulgence in the simplicity of their flavors.
Desserts in Sinfonia are a crescendo of sweetness. Cannoli, decadent tiramisu, and velvety panna cotta are just a glimpse into the world of confectionery delights. The aroma of freshly brewed espresso mingles with the scent of sweet pastries, inviting travellers and locals alike to savour the moment, one sip, and one bite at a time.
In Sinfonia, every meal is not just sustenance; it is a celebration, an ode to the senses that embodies the nation's passion for life and the art of indulgence. Each dish, crafted with love and expertise, invites you to embark on a culinary journey, promising an unforgettable, symphonic experience of taste and tradition.
Available local recipes are Flaming Red Bolognese, Arancini, Focaccia, Risotto, Truffle, Gelato, Stracciatella, Panettone, Frutti di Mare, Ravioli, Carbonara, Panzanella, Cassata, Panna cotta, Tiramisù, Struffoli, and Bicerin.
Music
In the heart of Sinfonia, music transcends mere notes and melodies; It embodies the very essence of the nation's soul, drawing inspiration from the long musical history of the nation. The air is alive with the harmonious sounds of strings, woodwinds, and exquisite voices, weaving a tapestry of timeless elegance and refined artistry.
Sinfonian classical music consists of the intricate compositions of the Renaissance times before the Cataclysm, where every piece is a meticulous arrangement of harmonies and counterpoints. Orchestras, adorned in resplendent attire, grace the grand stages, their instruments resonating with the passion and precision of virtuosos. The music echoes the spirit of the Renaissance, evoking a sense of nobility and grace that transports listeners to eras long past.
Sinfonia's opera, a jewel in the nation's musical crown, captures the essence of the nation's operatic traditions. Theatres adorned with opulent chandeliers and intricate frescoes come alive with the emotive arias and duets of talented sopranos and tenors. The stories sung on stage are tales of love, tragedy, and triumph.
Sinfonia's street corners and bustling squares are serenaded by wandering minstrels and troubadours, their lutes and mandolins resonating with folk tunes that have been passed down through generations. These lively melodies celebrate the joys of life, love, and camaraderie, inviting passersby to join in the merry dance.
Sacred music, inspired by the grandeur of Renaissance choral compositions, fills the air in Sinfonia's cathedrals and chapels. Choirs, their voices soaring to the heavens, perform hymns and motets that echo with reverence, instilling a sense of awe and spirituality.
In Sinfonia, music is not just an art form; it is a language that speaks to the soul. Each note, each chord, carries the weight of centuries of tradition and the boundless creativity of the nation's musicians. Sinfonian music, steeped in the legacy of classical and Renaissance traditions, invites listeners on a journey through time, where the past and the present harmonize in a beautiful, melodic continuum.
Arts and Crafts
In the heart of Sinfonia, art flourishes as a vibrant tapestry: Every stroke of the brush, every sculpted contour, and every intricate detail echo the timeless elegance and creativity that define Sinfonian art through the ages.
Sinfonia's art scene is a blend of classical finesse and Renaissance innovation. Artists as maestros of famed art movements pay homage to the human form, capturing its grace and emotion with masterful precision. Classical sculptures decorate public squares, their marble figures embodying the spirit of beauty and perfection.
The city walls and galleries of Sinfonia come alive with vivid frescoes and murals, telling stories of mythology, history, and everyday life. These fresco techniques masterfully crafted into artworks breathe life into the very architecture that houses them, transforming the mundane into the extraordinary.
Sinfonia's Renaissance-style architecture serves as a canvas in itself. Ornate facades, adorned with intricate carvings and colourful mosaics, reflect the nation's love for aesthetics and craftsmanship. Palazzos, with their grandeur and grace, stand as living testaments to the nation's appreciation for architectural brilliance, drawing inspiration from the likes of the Diminuendo family's architectural patronage.
The streets of Sinfonia are often graced by street performers and artists, their lively performances resounding as the vibrant spirit of Sinfonia's piazzas. Musicians play soul-stirring melodies, while painters create live masterpieces, inviting passersby to immerse themselves in the artistic ambiance that permeates the air.
In Sinfonia, art is not merely an expression; it's a way of life. It breathes passion into every corner, inviting both creators and admirers to partake in the symphony of creativity that defines the nation. From the grandeur of classical sculptures to the vivacity of contemporary street art, Sinfonian arts stand as a testament to Italy's enduring influence, where creativity knows no bounds, and beauty is celebrated in every form.
✶ Designs, Motifs, Symbols
Sinfonian Vision case
Character Cards
Sinfonia Character Cards contain a large circle inlaid with a diamond-shape floral motif. At the top centre of the large circle is the Sinfonia Vision symbol, with the character's element inlaid inside it. Four icons of the same size can be found on each side of the Vision.
The bottom two icons on both sides are identical: the bottom is a fig leaf, and above, it is a Glacier Lily and on top of a bundle of grapes. The remaining icons each represent one of the Noble Crests, depending on which area the character is from.
Crests
In Sinfonian heraldry, especially the red fleur-de-lis (Rinforzando), golden lions (Fortepiano), black eagles (Diminuendo), and blue man-eating dragons (Sforzando) can be found in various colour palettes reflecting the house colours of the respective noble family. The only house represented in the governing nobility who does not depict any symbol other than a silver musical note and their house colours on their crest is the Archon.
Motifs
Craftsmanship has shown itself in marvellously crafted sculptures and paintings and crests of not just people but also animals. Dozens of little cherubs sitting atop pillars and fountains or lined up against the railings of staircases and balconies. Marble lions and eagles are stationed to flank staircases to official buildings and private estates whilst creatures of folklore adorn the gates of gardens and plazas. Especially apples, figs, and quince are used as representatives for the flora, besides any kind of flower the artisan chose to incorporate into their pieces for a specific message. Symmetry in patterns for marble floors, wall carpets, clothes, and more were favoured by anyone.
✶ Economy
Sinfonia's economy dances to the rhythm of tradition and creativity, creating a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and commerce. The nation's artisans, skilled in crafting exquisite musical instruments and intricate masks, contribute to a thriving handicraft industry. Sinfonia's renowned culinary scene, highlighted by dishes like the Flaming Red Bolognese, has become a culinary sensation, drawing food enthusiasts from far and wide. Additionally, the wine produced in the picturesque Canto and Vivace Vineyards not only pleases the senses but also contributes significantly to the nation's exports. The Palazzo Sinfonia Grande, a hub of artistic brilliance, attracts musicians, scholars, and enthusiasts, enhancing the tourism sector. Festivals like the Festa di Voci Gentile and the Mascherata di Eco not only celebrate tradition but also boost local businesses, turning the nation into a vibrant tapestry of economic prosperity where the arts and culture play a central role.
✶ Fashion
The larger city-states produce textiles such as velvet, silk, and wool. Thus, Sinfonian fashion is extravagant and expensive, crafted from velvet, brocade, ribbons, and jewels.
Men's Fashion
Men are seen wearing doublets, tight-fitting jackets with elaborate embroidery and embellishments, paired with hose (fitted trousers) made from rich fabrics like velvet or silk. Crisp, ruffled shirts with lace collars peeking out from under the doublet add a touch of sophistication to the ensemble. Men can layer their outfits with intricately designed vests and capes made from luxurious fabrics, often adorned with brocade patterns and fur trimmings. Wide-brimmed hats and caps adorned with feathers are popular accessories, reflecting the wearer's social status and taste. Knee-high leather boots, often with decorative buckles, complete the look for men.
Women's Fashion
Women tend to wear elegant gowns with fitted bodices and flowing skirts made from silk, satin, or brocade. These gowns can be adorned with elaborate embroidery and gemstones. Corsets help achieve the desired hourglass silhouette, while farthingales, hoop-like structures worn under skirts, create a voluminous effect. Gowns often feature puffed sleeves, which can be embellished with lace or embroidery, adding a touch of femininity to the attire. Women can accessorize with ornate headpieces, such as jewelled tiaras or wreaths of flowers, and wear sheer veils that cascade elegantly over their hair. Delicate silk slippers, embroidered and adorned with ribbons, complement the overall look, offering both comfort and style.
Children's Fashion
Young boys can wear miniature doublets and hoses, while girls can don dresses with simpler bodices and shorter skirts, mirroring adult fashion. Children's clothing can feature playful embellishments like colourful ribbons, lace trims, and embroidered motifs, reflecting youthful exuberance. Children can wear smaller versions of adult accessories, such as feathered caps for boys and dainty headpieces for girls, allowing them to imitate the elegance of their elders. Children can wear leather shoes with sturdy soles, ensuring both comfort and durability as they explore their world.
Uniforms
Past the events of the Cataclysm, the colours for the clerical dress have been decided. Black became the most accepted colour in Sinfonia, with white being left for the head of their belief.
✶ Festivals and Holidays
La Sinfonia Grande
An annual music festival where musicians and composers from all over Sinfonia gather to perform in a grand symphonic orchestra. The event celebrates the nation's love for music, showcasing both traditional Sinfonian tunes and innovative compositions.
Festa di Voci Gentile
A culinary event celebrating Sinfonia's diverse cuisine. During this festival, renowned chefs prepare elaborate dishes, and local eateries offer special menus. The feast emphasizes the use of ingredients that create harmonious sounds when cooked, aligning with the nation's focus on sound.
La Mascherata di Eco
A vibrant carnival where people wear masks and costumes, symbolizing different musical themes and characters. Parades, music performances, and dance events fill the streets, creating a lively atmosphere. The event culminates in a grand masquerade ball where attendees dance to the rhythm of traditional Sinfonian music.
Serenata Chiaro di Luna
A romantic tradition where individuals express their feelings through serenades. During a specific night of the year, people sing love songs under the moonlight to their beloved. It's a charming and heartfelt event, reflecting the romantic nature of Sinfonian culture.
Armonia Artigiana
An event showcasing the craftsmanship of Sinfonia. Artisans and craftsmen display their skills in creating musical instruments, intricate masks, and decorative items. ✶ Language
Besides the Common Tongue, Sinfonian is the local language spoken in the nation. Sinfonian script is the same overall. Spoken, however, it is separated into two dialects: Northern and Southern Sinfonian.

✶ Politics
As aforementioned, the city-states were independently ruled by nobility taking care of their own region. These five regions are governed as follows: Fugue/Sonata in Armonia, the Rinforzando family in Allegro, the Diminuendo in Crescendo, the Sforzando family in Serenata, the Fortepiano family in Vivace. Together, they used to form the Houses of Staccato, but now, they deploy two voted representatives for their houses for the Council of Ten that serves as the government of Sinfonia under the lead of their Archon.

History
✶ Pre-Archon War
Long before the Archon War, Sinfonia was a land of musical marvels, where the harmonious sounds of nature and the creativity of its people blended seamlessly. The nation's city-states were known for their unique musical traditions, and Sinfonia was renowned as a cultural haven, attracting musicians, artists, and artisans from all corners of Teyvat. Said city-states were governed by nobility within their respective regions, and said families were known as Houses of Staccato.
✶ The Archon War
2,000 years ago in the midst of the Archon War, Sinfonia was engulfed in chaos. Rival factions within the nation clashed, each vying for control and power. The once serene melodies that echoed through Sinfonia's cities were drowned out by the sounds of battle. The sound dragon Duneyr, accompanied by Fugue, fought a bloody battle against the fairies allied with dryads and nymphs and sirens. Days of combat were long and exhausting, gruesome, too. Fugue's music, infused with the elemental power of sound, resonated across the land. They composed symphonies that served as shields, protecting Sinfonia's cities from enemy attacks. The harmonious tunes not only bolstered the spirits of the Sinfonian soldiers but also inspired awe and fear in their adversaries. The nation's musicians composed ballads of heroism, immortalizing the sacrifices made by their fellow citizens.
When the Archon War finally subsided as a consequence of the enemy forces being subdued, Sinfonia emerged as a testament to the strength of unity and the enduring spirit of music. The nation's landscapes bore the scars of battle, but its people stood proud, their melodies carrying the echoes of their resilience and determination. Sinfonia had weathered the storm, and its harmonious legacy would echo through the ages, reminding the world of the unwavering power of unity and song.
✶ Post-Archon War
After the Archon War subsided and peace returned to Teyvat, Sinfonia emerged as a symbol of cultural revival. Fugue, having proven their leadership during the war, ascended to the position of Archon. Under their guidance, the nation embraced a new era of creativity and unity. However, their people didn't know that they've been planning the nation's brainwashing in the process by trying to have their followers obsessively worship them. They also were a firm believer of the motto 'survival of the strongest'. And akin to how the Raiden Shogun closed down the borders of Inazuma, Fugue isolated Sinfonia from all other nations.
In some way, this is also how the Opera War could take place in the first place: A historical conflict where rival factions within Sinfonia fought for control over the nation's opera houses, leading to a period of artistic turmoil and political intrigue. Dozens of fighters fell in battle, serving as morbid amusement for their Archon they worshipped so dearly and prayed to for victory.
✶ Pre-Cataclysm
Once some people realized that there was something off about Fugue's style of ruling, they started meeting up in secret to discuss their course of action. Thus, the Rebellion of Silent Echo was born. In a time when the government suppressed artistic expression, a group of musicians and artists known as the Silent Echo staged a rebellion with the aid of fairies, advocating for the freedom of artistic creation. Their efforts led to significant reforms and the recognition of artistic freedom in Sinfonia. And with Fugue's fall, a new Archon had to be chosen. With the leader of the rebellion, Aria, nearing her untimely demise, her fairy companion Sonata was chosen to take her place. The spirit agreed, pledging to uphold the young woman's ideals forever. Thus, taking a form reminiscent of Aria, Sonata ascended to an Archon.
As a follow-up, the Harmony Revolution came over the Nation of Sound. Sinfonia experienced a period of social and cultural upheaval considered as Renaissance. During this time, there was a flourishing of arts, literature, and science. Sinfonia's Harmony Revolution was a time of great creativity and innovation, shaping the nation's cultural identity for a better after everything that had happened under Fugue's rule.
In the peaceful years following the previous events, Sinfonia continued to thrive as a centre of art, music, and culture. The nation's harmony resonated in every corner, and its citizens revelled in the beauty of their traditions. The Sinfonian people, inspired by their Archon, Sonata, reached new heights of artistic achievement. The nation's orchestras played enchanting melodies, and its craftsmen created intricate instruments that seemed to echo with the soul of Teyvat itself.
✶ The Cataclysm
When the Cataclysm struck and the once-hidden nation of Khaenri'ah faced destruction, Sinfonia was not spared from the ensuing chaos. Abyssal creatures, born from the depths of darkness, seeped onto the surface, threatening the very essence of Sinfonia's harmonious existence. The nation's musicians and scholars joined forces, using the power of their music to create protective wards, shielding their cities and people from the malevolent influence of the Abyss.
During this dark time, Sonata led their people with unwavering resolve akin to how Aria had led them through the Rebellion of Silent Echo. They composed a grand symphony, a musical masterpiece infused with elemental magic, which resonated across the land, bolstering the spirits of the Sinfonian citizens. The music became a beacon of hope, inspiring the people to stand strong against the Abyssal onslaught.
✶ Post-Cataclysm
The Eruption of Mount Crescendo reshaped the landscape of Sinfonia, leading to the creation of unique geological formations and influencing the nation's culture and traditions near the end of the Cataclysm.
In the aftermath of the Cataclysm, Sinfonia bore the scars of the Abyssal invasion, but the nation's spirit remained unbroken. The people, having faced the darkness and emerged victorious, celebrated their resilience. Sonata, hailed as the Maestro of Light, was revered for their leadership during the crisis.
Sinfonia became a sanctuary for refugees from other nations affected by the Abyss, offering them solace, shelter, and a chance to rebuild their lives. The nation's musicians composed elegies and hymns, honouring the fallen and reminding the world of the importance of unity and harmony.
The Cataclysm, though a time of great suffering, had also strengthened the bonds between the people of Sinfonia. They embraced the survivors from other lands, fostering a spirit of cooperation and understanding. The nation's musical traditions evolved, incorporating new melodies and instruments brought by the refugees, enriching Sinfonia's cultural tapestry.
Under Sonata's guidance, Sinfonia became a bastion of hope, a land where the power of music and unity triumphed over darkness. The Cataclysm had left its mark, but Sinfonia stood as a testament to the enduring strength of Teyvat's people, reminding them that even in the face of the Abyss, the harmonious melodies of unity would always prevail.
✶ Recent Past
The Great Sonata's Unification is a major event in Sinfonian history. The nation used to be only a collection of city-states and regions before the Great Sonata's Unification. Sonata, a revered leader, played a key role in uniting these diverse territories into a cohesive nation.
Other than the above, the Feast of Voices is a grand event celebrating Sinfonia's love for music and gastronomy. The Feast of Voices originated centuries ago, marking a treaty or alliance between different Sinfonian regions. Traveler and Paimon also happen to stop by during the final preparations as it's a nationwide festival where music, food, and tradition are celebrated.

Archon
Sonata
Considering the historical context of scorn towards Fugue, Sonata still has a complex relationship with their people. They're seen as a figure of both reverence and resentment among the Sinfonian citizens. Representing the ideal of tradition, they're respected for preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of Sinfonia. The people appreciate their commitment to maintaining the nation's unique customs, arts, and cuisine.
Alas, some Sinfonians are still wary of Sonata's rule, fearing oppressive measures or outdated traditions that hinder progress. There are factions within the nation that resist Sonata's strict adherence to old ways, desiring more modernization and change. Sonata actively patronizes the arts, encouraging traditional Sinfonian music, literature, and other cultural expressions. This has earned them admiration among artists and intellectuals, even if the general populace remains divided on their rule.
Like historical situations where Fugue's policies affected the economy, Sonata's governance has created economic disparities. Certain regions or social classes could prosper due to their adherence to traditional practices, while others, desiring change, face economic challenges. Sonata employs diplomacy to maintain a delicate balance, seeking alliances with neighboring nations like Fontaine and Mondstadt. This diplomacy is both a source of stability and contention among the people, depending on the outcomes of such alliances.
Despite any resentment, there's a deep-seated pride among Sinfonians for their cultural heritage, which Sonata represents. This pride unites the people, even in the face of internal divisions, creating a sense of identity rooted in their traditions.

Al-Andalus: Unraveling the Literary and Scientific Odyssey, Paving the Way for the European Renaissance
In the corridors of time, the cultural crescendo of Al-Andalus emerges as a beacon of intellectual brilliance, weaving together the diverse threads of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian influences. This article endeavors to unveil the kaleidoscopic literary and scientific scene of Islamic Spain, exploring the prolific authors, their masterpieces, and the intellectual symphony that resonated through the Golden Age of Al-Andalus. At its core, this exploration is guided by two pivotal theses: the transformative impact of education and freedom of knowledge within Al-Andalus and its influential role in seeding the European Renaissance through the contributions of Muslim scholars.
Al-Andalus: A Cradle of Scientific Innovation
Before delving into the literary legacy of Al-Andalus, it is imperative to recognize the monumental scientific contributions that emanated from this Islamic territory. Muslim scholars in Al-Andalus were pioneers in various scientific disciplines, creating an intellectual atmosphere that laid the groundwork for advancements that would eventually find their way to the European Renaissance.
Mathematics and Astronomy: A Legacy of Precision
The House of Wisdom in Cordoba became a haven for mathematicians and astronomers, who not only preserved ancient Greek and Roman mathematical texts but also expanded upon them. Figures like Al-Khwarizmi, the "father of algebra," and Al-Zarqali, who refined the astrolabe, made enduring contributions. Their mathematical prowess and astronomical insights not only advanced knowledge within Al-Andalus but also set the stage for the scientific reawakening in Europe.
Medicine and Pharmacology: Healing Wisdom
The medical schools of Al-Andalus, notably in Cordoba and Toledo, were unrivaled in their pursuit of medical knowledge. Scholars like Al-Zahrawi, known as the "father of surgery," authored comprehensive medical encyclopedias that became essential references in both the East and the West. The advancements in pharmacology and surgical techniques pioneered in Al-Andalus had a profound impact on the evolution of medical sciences.
Geography and Cartography: Navigating New Horizons
The navigational prowess of Al-Andalus extended to geography and cartography, with scholars like Al-Idrisi creating detailed maps and atlases that influenced European explorers centuries later. The accuracy of their maps and the incorporation of geographical knowledge from various cultures underscored the cosmopolitan nature of Al-Andalus.
The Cultural Tapestry: Al-Andalus as a Crucible
Al-Andalus, a cultural melting pot that transcended political boundaries, flourished as a haven of intellectual exchange. The coexistence of Muslims, Jews, and Christians fostered an environment where ideas traversed linguistic and religious barriers, resulting in a harmonious blend of cultural influences. This rich amalgamation laid the foundation for an unparalleled literary and scientific renaissance that echoed through the corridors of time. Central to this efflorescence was an educational ethos that transcended religious affiliations, fostering an environment where the pursuit of knowledge was paramount.
Poetry: Ibn Zaydun and the Eloquent Echoes of Love
At the heart of Al-Andalus' literary and scientific brilliance lies the artistry of poetry, a medium through which emotions and intellect found eloquent expression. Ibn Zaydun, a luminary from Cordoba, infused his verses with a passionate fervor that transcended cultural boundaries. His love poems, a marriage of Arab and Andalusian influences, resonate with the intensity of human emotions, becoming timeless echoes of the region's cultural dynamism. The intellectual freedom and education prevalent in Al-Andalus allowed poets like Ibn Zaydun to explore and articulate complex emotions with a level of sophistication rarely witnessed elsewhere.
Similarly, Al-Mutanabbi, although not native to Al-Andalus, carved his niche in the poetic annals. His verses, adorned with political insight, expressions of love, and panegyrics for patrons, showcased the breadth of themes explored by poets of the time. Through their poetry, these luminaries painted a vivid portrait of the emotional landscape of Al-Andalus, showcasing how an educated and enlightened society nurtured creative expression.
Philosophical Peaks: Ibn Hazm and Ibn Rushd's Legacy
As the poets flourished, philosophers like Ibn Hazm and Ibn Rushd elevated Al-Andalus to new intellectual heights. Ibn Hazm's "Tawq al-Hamama" (The Ring of the Dove) transcends the boundaries of conventional love stories. Embedded within its narrative is a profound exploration of ethics and societal norms, reflecting the cultural synthesis prevalent in Al-Andalus. The flourishing educational institutions allowed thinkers like Ibn Hazm to engage in intellectual pursuits, contributing to the development of philosophical narratives within their works.
Ibn Rushd, known in the West as Averroes, left an indelible mark on Islamic philosophy. His extensive commentaries on Aristotle's works not only served as bridges between Greek thought and Islamic understanding but also as catalysts for the intellectual pursuits of the Renaissance. While not focusing on fictional narratives, his influence on the philosophical discourse of Al-Andalus reverberates through the ages. The intellectual freedom of Al-Andalus allowed philosophers to engage in a free exchange of ideas, paving the way for profound philosophical reflections.
Anthological Heights: Al-Isfahani and "Kitab al-Aghani"
Amidst this intellectual renaissance, Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani's "Kitab al-Aghani" (The Book of Songs) stands as a monumental anthology. Beyond being a collection of poetry, it serves as a multifaceted repository of anecdotes, stories, and cultural insights. This literary compendium not only showcases the diversity of voices in Al-Andalus but also provides a panoramic view of the cultural, social, and artistic tapestry that defined the era. The freedom of knowledge and the accessibility of education allowed for the compilation and preservation of diverse cultural narratives within anthologies like "Kitab al-Aghani."
Prose and Philosophical Allegories: Ibn Tufail and Al-Ma'arri's Enlightenment
Beyond the lyrical verses and anthologies, Al-Andalus embraced the realm of prose and philosophical allegories. Ibn Tufail's "Risalat Hayy ibn Yaqzan" (The Epistle of Hayy ibn Yaqzan) serves as an early venture into philosophical storytelling. The allegorical journey of a boy's self-discovery on a deserted island explores profound themes of isolation, enlightenment, and the pursuit of knowledge, foreshadowing the later emergence of the philosophical novel. The intellectual atmosphere of Al-Andalus, marked by educational freedom, provided the fertile ground for the creation of allegorical narratives that explored complex philosophical ideas.
In the realm of prose, Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri's compositions embodied skepticism and asceticism. His poetry and prose challenged prevailing societal norms and religious orthodoxy, reflecting a courageous intellectual spirit that questioned established beliefs. Through their works, Ibn Tufail and Al-Ma'arri became torchbearers of enlightenment in Al-Andalus, illustrating how a society rich in educational opportunities could produce individuals who questioned and reshaped societal norms.
Anecdotal Archives: Ibn al-Jawzi's Insights into History
Ibn al-Jawzi's "Sifat al-Safwa" (The Characteristics of the Elect) contributes to the literary panorama with biographies and anecdotes of notable figures from the Islamic world. This work, while not a fictional narrative, serves as a historical mosaic, offering glimpses into the lives of influential personalities. It provides a nuanced understanding of the historical and moral landscape of Al-Andalus, showcasing the diversity of thought that thrived in the region. The availability of education and the preservation of historical anecdotes within works like "Sifat al-Safwa" underscore how an educated society values its historical narrative.
Al-Andalus and the Seeds of the European Renaissance
While Al-Andalus reached the zenith of its intellectual prowess, its influence transcended the borders of the Iberian Peninsula. Islamic Spain played a pivotal role in sowing the seeds of the European Renaissance, and its impact on European scholars cannot be overstated. The interconnectedness of cultures, fostered by the educational ethos of Al-Andalus, facilitated the transmission of knowledge that would later catalyze the intellectual rebirth of Europe.
The scientific contributions of Al-Andalus, especially in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and cartography, acted as catalysts for the Renaissance in Europe. Muslim scholars, committed to the pursuit of knowledge, meticulously translated and preserved ancient Greek texts, introducing European scholars to a wealth of scientific wisdom.
Mathematics and Astronomy: The Legacy of Al-Khwarizmi and Al-Zarqali
Al-Khwarizmi's pioneering work in algebra and algorithmic processes provided European mathematicians with foundational principles. The term "algebra" itself is derived from his influential treatise "Al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala" (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing).
Al-Zarqali's advancements in astronomy, including his refinement of the astrolabe, influenced European navigators and astronomers. The precision of Al-Andalusian astronomical observations laid the groundwork for the later scientific revolution in Europe.
Medicine: Al-Zahrawi's Surgical Innovations
Al-Zahrawi, known in the West as Albucasis, revolutionized the field of surgery with his comprehensive medical encyclopedias. His detailed descriptions of surgical instruments and techniques became foundational texts for European surgeons during the Renaissance, influencing medical practices for centuries.
Geography and Cartography: Al-Idrisi's Maps Charting New Frontiers
The meticulous maps and atlases created by Al-Idrisi provided European explorers with accurate representations of the known world. His "Tabula Rogeriana," a world map commissioned by King Roger II of Sicily, became a reference for European cartographers navigating uncharted territories.
The Renaissance Echo: A Resurgence of Knowledge
The translation movement facilitated by Islamic Spain's commitment to education and knowledge brought Greek classics, scientific treatises, and philosophical works to European scholars who were on the cusp of a cultural renaissance. The knowledge amassed in Al-Andalus laid the foundation for the revival of learning in Europe, sparking a period of unparalleled creativity, scientific inquiry, and artistic flourishing.
Figures like Gerard of Cremona, who translated numerous Arabic works into Latin, and scholars like Adelard of Bath, who traveled to Al-Andalus to study, exemplify the profound impact of Islamic Spain on European intellectual development. The universities that emerged across Europe drew inspiration from the educational institutions of Al-Andalus, fostering an environment where critical thinking and the pursuit of knowledge were paramount.
The influence of Al-Andalus on the European Renaissance is not merely a historical footnote; it is a testament to the enduring power of education, intellectual freedom, and the cross-pollination of ideas. The Renaissance, with its fervor for knowledge and cultural revival, owes a debt to the enlightened society that thrived on the Iberian Peninsula.
In essence, the educational vibrancy of Al-Andalus not only shaped the literary and scientific landscape of Islamic Spain but also played a pivotal role in the intellectual awakening that would redefine the course of European history. The echoes of Al-Andalus reverberate through the annals of time, reminding us that the pursuit of knowledge knows no boundaries and that a society enriched by education can leave an indelible mark on the tapestry of human civilization.

Communication as Art + Skill
Communication is an art form, as well as a form of learning. Whether it’s related to feelings, or ideas and concepts, artists and learners deal with communication as a medium in which to work. As I developed myself as an artist and learner, I found that the concept of communication could be broken down into reflective and explanatory means. This realization was insightful, as it helped me to look at my art and learning as either acts of reflection or attempts to illustrate ideas. Within my journey as a learner and artist, I found my piece “Crescendo” a collaborative literary journal, and “From Hermione Granger to Albus Dumbledore: from a consumer of knowledge to a facilitator thereof”, a reflective essay on my learning, to be indicative of these traits.
Writing takes recognition of audience, context, and diversity while being able to blend evidence, claims, and reflection in a way that is not only engaging but knowledgeable. In my reflective essay “From Hermione Granger to Albus Dumbledore: from a consumer of knowledge to a facilitator thereof”, I explored this skill, utilizing my own work as both qualitative and quantitative evidence of my claims of learning. In order to make use of this evidence, I needed to identify the audience of my essay, and develop a context in which to create a consistent narrative. This forced me to imagine who was reading my essay, why they were reading it, and how to make the reading experience something they felt inspired by. Once I had done this, I began to see the importance of reflective writing. Reflecting on my pieces of work and how I wanted others to understand them assisted in me delivering my personal narrative, allowing me to take my reflective essay and turn it explanatory.
I continued this reflective to explanatory cycle in my piece “Crescendo”. “Crescendo” is within a google drive with labeled folders, all relating to multimodal art. Contributors submit their pieces via instructions found in each folder. This means that the documentation within the piece becomes crucial to be able to interact and understand with the pieces. Therefore how we as a team were able to convey how to use the drive as a journal and submit content was incredibly important. Working with my team, I began to examine how writing should be structured to assist in identifying the audience of our journal. This examination bolstered me to think about how our multimodal pieces allowed us to communicate with a wide range of diverse audiences, as we encouraged pieces that didn’t depend on a specific language or written form. It helped me see communication beyond writing and evidence. While these forms are important but are not the barometers in which I should only measure my skills.
In conclusion, my journey through myself as an artist and learner has helped me understand communication. I realized reflective communication was introspective and was the visualization of my own thoughts, feelings, and ideas to myself as well as the outside world. This contrasted with explanatory communication, which is my attempt to offer my understanding around a subject, or offer up my reflective thoughts to an audience.

After a recent summit between new partners China and Russia, General Secretary Xi Jinping and Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin issued an odd one-sentence communique: “There can be no winners in a nuclear war and it should never be fought.”
No one would disagree, even though several officials of both hypocritical governments have previously threatened their neighbors with nuclear attacks.
But still, why did the two feel the need to issue such a terse statement—and why now?
Rarely has the global rhetoric of mass annihilation reached such a crescendo as the present, as existential wars rage in Ukraine and Gaza.
In particular, Putin at least believes that he is finally winning the Ukraine conflict. Xi seems to assume that conventional ascendant Chinese military power in the South China Sea has finally made the absorption of Taiwan practicable.
They both believe that the only impediment to their victories would be an intervention from the U.S. and the NATO alliance, a conflict that could descend into mutual threats to resort to nuclear weapons.
Thus the recent warnings of Xi and Putin.
Almost monthly, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un continues his weary threats to use his nuclear arsenal to destroy South Korea or Japan.
A similarly monotonous, pro-Hamas Turkish president, Recep Erdogan, regularly threatens Armenians with crazy talk of repeating the “mission of our grandfathers.” And he occasionally warns Israelis and Greeks that they may one day wake up to Turkish missiles raining down upon their cities.
More concretely, for the first time in history, Iran attacked the homeland of Israel. It launched the largest wartime array of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and drones in modern history—over 320 projectiles.
Iran’s theocrats simultaneously claim they are about ready to produce nuclear weapons. And, of course, since 1979, Iran has periodically promised to wipe Israel off the map and half the world’s Jews with it.
Most ignore these crazy threats and write them off as the braggadocio of dictators. But as we saw on October 7, the barbarity of human nature has not changed much from the premodern world, whether defined by savage beheading, mutilations, murdering, mass rape, torture, and hostage taking of Israeli elderly, women, and children.
But what has radically transformed are the delivery systems of mass death—nuclear weapons, chemical gases, biological agents, and artificial-intelligence-driven delivery systems.
Oddly, the global reaction to the promise of Armageddon remains one of nonchalance. Most feel that such strongmen rant wildly but would never unleash weapons of civilizational destruction.
Consider that there are as many autocratic nuclear nations (e.g., Russia, China, Pakistan, North Korea, and perhaps Iran) as democratic ones (U.S., Britain, France, Israel, and India). Only Israel has an effective anti-ballistic missile dome. And the more the conventional power of the West declines, the more in extremis it will have to rely on a nuclear deterrent—at a time when it has no effective missile defense of its homelands.
In a just-released book, The End of Everything, I wrote about four examples of annihilation—the classical city-state of Thebes, ancient Carthage, Byzantine Constantinople and Aztec Tenochtitlán—in which the unimaginable became all too real.
In all these erasures, the targeted, naïve states believed that their illustrious pasts, rather than a realistic appraisal of their present inadequate defenses, would ensure their survival.
All hoped that their allies—the Spartans, the anti-Roman Macedonians, the Christian nations of Western Europe, and the subject cities of the Aztecs—would appear at the eleventh hour to stave off their defeat.
Additionally, these targeted states had little understanding of the agendas and capabilities of the brilliantly methodic killers outside their walls—the ruthless wannabe philosopher Alexander the Great, the literary patron Scipio Aemilianus, the self-described intellectual Mehmet II, and the widely read Hernán Cortés—who all sought to destroy utterly rather than merely defeat their enemies.
These doomed cities and nations were reduced to rubble or absorbed by the conquerors. Their populations were wiped out or enslaved, and their once-hallowed cultures, customs, and traditions lost to history. The last words of the conquered were usually variations of, “It can’t happen here.”
If the past is any guide to the present, we should take heed that what almost never happens in war can certainly still occur.
When killers issue wild, even lunatic, threats, we should nonetheless take them seriously.
We should not count on friends or neutrals to save our civilization. Instead, Americans should build defense systems over the skies of our homeland, secure our borders, ensure our military operates on meritocracy, cease wild deficit spending and borrowing, and rebuild both our conventional and nuclear forces.
Otherwise, we will naively—and fatally—believe that we are magically exempt when the inconceivable becomes all too real.

“I Want Everything”: Pork Pie’s Auditory Ticket to Psychedelic Infinity In the shadowed alcove of today’s musical bazaar, where neon echoes pirouette with soporific reluctance, emerges “I Want Everything” – a phantasmagorical mosaic from Pork Pie that distills the wistfulness of an Elysian bygone era through a prism of anarchic dance-floor defiance. With Shane Brett's drums raining down like cosmic anvils against Michael Laverty's bass-lines - serpentine rivers carving valleys into virgin planets – this osmotic tapestry unfurls like fever dreams in an opium den. https://open.spotify.com/track/2soIwTad0D6NtAVfk3nudK Amidst this genesis springs forth Stafford, alchemist and siren both; his vocal cords spun from gossamer spider webs woven tightly around our collective longing. His literary wand taps upon piano keys morphing pain to solace while his alto sax exhales lost love letters found in attic chests. Peter Laverty on lead guitar ignites comet tails that lick at heaven’s door—every riff a Pollock painting mid-stratospection. "I Want Everything" catapults you into kaleidoscopic realms—a bacchanalian marriage between 60s psychedelia and modern tempestuous groove—its DNA redolent with garage rock sweat and indie effervescence crystallized under Dundalk’s Lockup watchful gaze: Pete Rust the conjurer; Fergal Davis the enchanter. Each note is a testament to their deft craftsmanship as sonic tailors who snip away till nothing but raw ethereal emotion remains. [caption id="attachment_55215" align="alignnone" width="2000"] “I Want Everything”: Pork Pie’s Auditory Ticket to Psychedelic Infinity[/caption] Pork Pie dares us—with audacity verging on lunacy—to sip from their chalice laden with liquid auroras in auditoriums where memories cavort untamed alongside pulsating cadences. Though birthed as progeny of "Pterodactyl," this latest offering is no mere fledgling—it surges forth emblazoned with plumes iridescent enough to blind Zeus himself. Ah! But fear not: for amidst such celestial braggadocio lies poignant humanity within every harmonic turn—an odyssey sailing agitated ocean-waves inside our marrow—the tangible ache of desire singing its universality straight through skin and soul alike... This is music that doesn’t simply demand your attention; it seizes it voraciously like Prometheus gripping fire—a decadent uproar meant not just for cognoscenti ears but any being dared dream beyond mundane finitude. “I Want Everything,” whispers golden-leafed infinity ascending—from deep-rooted nostalgia erupts esoteric present dancing furiously towards future crescendo yet unwritten—for Pork Pie hath sculptured sound into radiant rebellion befitting gods amid mortals. Are you looking for an electrifying thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you gasping for breath? Look no further than Jonathan Kellerman’s latest novel, Serenity. Set in the gritty underbelly of Los Angeles, Serenity follows the investigation of the murder of a wealthy photographer who recently gained media attention for his controversial art project. Dr. Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis are drawn into the case, which takes them on a twisted journey through the world of the homeless and the ultra-rich. Kellerman’s writing is as sharp as ever, with vivid descriptions that transport the reader to the seedy streets of LA. The characters are well-drawn and multi-dimensional, with quirks and flaws that make them feel real. Dr. Delaware, in particular, is a standout, with his dry wit and razor-sharp intellect. The plot is intricate and fast-paced, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. Kellerman expertly weaves together the various threads of the story, building tension to a nail-biting crescendo. But what really sets Serenity apart is its exploration of complex ethical issues. Kellerman delves into questions of art and exploitation, wealth and poverty, and the morality of doing good. The murder investigation serves not only as a thrilling whodunit, but as a thoughtful examination of social issues that are all too relevant in today’s world. Overall, Serenity is a knockout of a novel that will satisfy both mystery buffs and literary-minded readers alike. Kellerman proves once again that he is a master of suspense and a writer with a keen eye for the ironies and contradictions of human behavior. Highly recommended! The Bloody Mary Urban Legend Explained!
Embedded within the fabric of suburban folklore, the legend of Bloody Mary has etched itself as an enduring enigma spanning through generations. This eerie narrative finds its core in the life and death of Mary, a woman from yesteryears whose tragic fate remains shrouded in multiple interpretations. The crux of the story revolves around her untimely demise, the circumstances of which range from betrayal to injustice, rendering her spirit forever unrestful. This spectral unrest purportedly finds its passage through mirrors, bridging the chasm between the corporeal and the ethereal. Passed down from hushed discussions during sleepovers to whispered tales by campfires, the saga of Bloody Mary continues to wield its mesmerizing grip, beckoning the brave to summon her from the reflective abyss.
As the clock strikes midnight, the ritual to conjure Bloody Mary weaves anticipation and trepidation into a hypnotic dance. Within dimly lit bathrooms, participants gather, a single flickering candle casting uncanny shadows on the walls. The rhythmic chant of "Bloody Mary," echoed a designated number of times—oftentimes three or thirteen—conjures her presence. The air becomes electric with an otherworldly tension as participants collectively await the elusive apparition, each uttered syllable melding with the heartbeat of the night.
The eerie encounter with Bloody Mary is the climactic crescendo of the ritual. A reflection that once held mundane visages now gives birth to a spectral form—a disheveled woman adorned in tattered attire, her frame seemingly drenched in blood. Her gaze, hollow and devoid of life, locks onto the summoner, an icy chill sweeping across the room. Certain versions depict her as a malevolent force, her spectral appendages stretching beyond the mirror's confinements, a phantasmagoric threat poised to breach the veil between dimensions. Such a haunting encounter leaves an indelible mark, leaving participants haunted by the specter long after the mirror's surface returns to its mundane state.
Over time, the legend of Bloody Mary has undergone metamorphosis, influenced by diverse cultural perspectives and imaginative adaptations. In some iterations, she morphs into a harbinger of destiny, while in others, she assumes the role of an omen predicting doom. With the advent of urban legends and the digital age, her resurgence spiraled into a flood of online videos, personal accounts, and captivating narratives, cementing her status as a cultural symbol found within movies, TV shows, and literary works—a chilling embodiment woven intricately into the tapestry of pop culture.
Beneath the layers of the supernatural, the haunting aura of Bloody Mary leaves an indelible psychological imprint on the brave souls who partake in the ritual. Lingering feelings of unease, paranoia, and anxiety are common companions in the aftermath of the encounter. Psychologists attribute these reactions to the potency of suggestion, the electric atmosphere, and the human penchant for weaving the enigmatic. Skeptics offer rational explanations, underscoring the mind's susceptibility to suggestion and the intricate dance between fear and fascination.
Through the ebb and flow of time, the legend of Bloody Mary remains a steadfast urban myth, an unbroken chain that traverses generations, societies, and cultures. Whether construed as a cautionary parable, a vessel of collective apprehensions, or a collage of historical whispers, her enduring allure finds root in the primal shivers she evokes. In a world ever enamored by the empiric, Bloody Mary stands as a testament to folklore's ageless ability to summon fear and wonder in equal measure. Her whispered chronicle will continue to echo down the corridors of time, a haunting refrain that lingers in the human psyche for ages to come.

OKAY OKAY BUT THIS RIGHT HERE IS A LITERARY MASTERPIECE!!!!!
I say this as a person who doesn’t read a lot of Poe fics when I defintely should because SAM! your fic has changed my molecular composition! ITS JUST SO FUCKING GOOD AND YOU PUT SO MUCH LOVE INTO THIS PIECE AND AAAAAAAAAA <3
BUT AAAAAAAAAAAAAA( i feel so !!! sometimes because I just can’t describe how I feel about your work because it’s just so good but like the word good isn’t the word I wanna use to describe it because it’s like otherworldly amazing!)
ANYWAY! sorry for being a geek but I just love how you start off this piece with dialogue because it immediately draws everyone in and kinda sets up the things about Poe being a shameless womanizer (which we all love). It also has a fun game that makes us understand the relationship between them and there close bond!
I am going to be quoting so much parts of this fic and this line right here is just oh so scrumptious!
“Just a funny, kind idiot who once knocked himself out falling backwards off a repulsorcraft, who has decidedly uncool penchant vintage Felucian music, and who always tries his absolute hardest to do the right thing.”
I love that you incorporate this because YOU NAILED POE CHARACTERIZATION ON THE HEAD! He is a lovable guy who has so much stories and experiences and feelings that ultimately just wants the best for everyone! GOD SAM! it just so good it makes me want to chew the words on the screen (not in a weird way of course).
Also I love that Poe catches what reader means when Kip had fun and she... well. He just cares for her a lot and it just shows with the way he doesn’t want to drop the topic.
PFFFFT the way that he just calls Kip pathetic makes me chuckle a little. AH and the crescendo of the conversation, reader never experiencing an orgasm with someone else. OH! hes so sweet thought I love that he firmly eliminates the thought that something was wrong with reader that she couldn’t cum during sex.
Okay but Sam! DUDE, i really love the way you make these conversations they have so realistic, they shift from topic to topic, going back to something they wanted to expand on. It makes the next moment of Poe offering his help that much more important!
ok ok OKAY but i do have to add this I LOVE that I can hear Poe’s voice everytime he speaks AGAIN YOUR DIALOGUE AAAAAAAAAAAA
“Patient and unpatronizing, he’d been tireless as you trashed one simulation after another, never laughing at you, genuinely excited when you showed signs of progress.”
SIGHHH I love him because he’s never a dick when you can’t do something!
AA poor reader is already spiraling about the whole situation and I mean shit me too! POE is POE! like he is someone who definitely gets my anxiety up and going like no tomorrow.
AH I love the imagery that you paint in regards to a crash landing and the current emotions that are being felt right at Poe’s door.
“You left your socks here last week, again. I keep finding ‘em mixed in with mine. I go to put a pair on and can only fit half my foot in before I realize what’s happening.”
This made me giggle and it was a nice moment for reader to ease up but those nerves are killing her and he immediately picks it up I love it.
ACK MY HEART MY HEART OH!!! Reader tearing up and Poe immediately comforting her, easing the worries and telling the beauty he sees and it makes me weepy liKE STOPP I’M TEARING UP A BIT!
AAAAAAAAAA my heart aches because I am to the max on the yearning scale for Poe like he’s just so kind easing reader into this situation making everything slow and steady.
“You gotta talk to me,” he reminds you.”
OKAY BUT WHY IS THAT SO HOT! IT’S DEFINTELY BECAUSE OF THE CONTEXT RELATED TO IT BUT SHIT DUDE THIS IS SO FREAKING GOOD!!
GODDDDDD AND THEN HE SLOWLY EASES HIS FINGERS IN YOU! Making any anxieties leave you especially the comment of being so wet for him and then TELLING YOU TO STOP THINKING FOR ONCE GOODNESS!
OH OH AND HIM SAYING IT”S NOT ABOUT HIM!! POE YOU ARE SUCH A GENT I LOVE HIM SO MUCH but also (( sir please let me suck your dick, thanks))
THIS PART KILLS ME SO SO MUCH!!!!!
“His eyes are soft, heavy brows lowered as he searches your face. What can’t say: I’ve always hated watching you touch everyone else. I’ve never wanted anybody like I’ve wanted you. You’re my favourite person in the galaxy.”
THE LOVE THAT IS THERE THE LAST SENTENCE SPECIFICALLY SENDS ME INTO A MESS ON THE FLOOR!
SAM MY DEAR ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL ME!!! (lovingly of course but HOLY SHIT)
“Then that’s six other times we gotta make up for,” he says, almost to himself.”
I’m in love with him there is nothing more to say other than I have collapsed on the floor and have flayed about. THEN THE BABBLING THAT COMES AFTER THAT QUOTE DUDE HOLY SHIT I”M IHFN DJSMFL HDIFl
I love that Poe is losing it and hes so fucking blissed out it’s just killing me! like this whole fucking section right here is making me blush cause holy crap. I’m GOBSMACKED!! MY FUCKING GOD I HAVE NO WORDS BECAUSE ITS SO GOOD AND IT OVERWHELMS ME IN THE BEST FUCKING WAY
“Oh shit, say my name again,” and you barely shape your lips around it before he’s hissing, driving his hips down to smack hard into yours, knocking the breath from your lungs. You lose control of your senses. You can’t see him, can barely hear him under the roar in your ears. Everything that you are is concentrated in your cunt.
“D’yknow how…ungh, how many times I’ve thought about this? About being inside you like this? And I never, ever thought you’d wanna…” he punctuates his words with short, hard thrusts. “You’re fucking perfect. Your pussy is perfect.”
Your face erupts with heat at his words. He catches you flinching and his eyes light, flashing a glimpse of his teeth even as you watch the muscles in his shoulders shake with the effort of controlling himself.
“Why’s that make you shy? You don’t like me talking about your pussy? You wanna know how good you taste, baby? You’re—ungh,” another shallow thrust, his brows pinching together, “…sweet, so sweet and tight and, fuck, I can’t believe how well you’re taking me, I know it’s so tight, but you’re doing so good, so good for me, you always… always have been…” his rambling trails out into nonsensical murmurs.”
MY GOODNESS LIKE THIS IS SSOOOOOOOOO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LIKE THE DIRTY TALK IS JUST SO GOOD AND IT’S MAKING ME BLUSH! AND JESUS THIS MAN IS KEEPING IT TO HIS WORD AND GIVING YOU ORGASMS LEFT AND RIGHT MY GOD!
“You’re crazy. She’s crazy,” he says to nobody in particular, lifting himself over you, hands pressing into the mattress.”
I love him hes just so silly but also wants you to know so bad that you aren’t a horrible being and that kills me!
ANFD GRUD IDHBKUERDFV o;n.gm,ho[ HE”S NOT DONE YET OH I”M NEVER GETTING UP FROM THE FLOOR HOLY SHIT
my dear! GOD THIS FIC GAVE ME SO MUCH LIFE! You are such an amazing writer and rereading your fics reinvigorates me and I really gotta thank you for just being you and amazing <3

“Really? Poe, I saw you running off with Buul like, less than two weeks ago. Drink.”
“Oh—yeah,” he grins, ducking his head and taking a swig. “Alright smartass, you’re up.”
You think for a minute. “I actually really like that polystarch bread they give us in the ration packs. It tastes way better than it smells.”
He gives you a withering look. “Who cares? That’s a shitty secret, whether it’s true or not. For that, you drink twice.”

noun: aether
CHEMISTRY: a pleasant-smelling colorless volatile liquid that is highly flammable. It is used as an anesthetic and as a solvent or intermediate in industrial processes.
LITERARY: the clear sky; the upper regions of air beyond the clouds.
Lusamine had bathed the Aether Paradise in light purposefully. It caused the foundation to radiate with a brilliance that was incapable of being ignored. There wasn't a soul in the greater scientific community that did not know of President Delacroix's contributions, nor were they ignorant of the masterfully crafted sanctum that had been built at sea; the VLFS was a marvel to behold, and set Aether apart from its competitors.
But the light was artificial. Truly, does a creature in captivity understand the difference between the brightness of the sun, and the manufactured light from a UVB bulb?
Light is essential to living beings: it sustains, and it provides guidance.
Light assists predators just as much as prey, unfortunately, and those who worked under Lusamine's hand are well-aware of her penchant for preventing people from slipping into dark corners. Lusamine saw everything, and kept light in mind when designing the monochrome fortress.
It is difficult to hide from the precision of a Lurantis when there are no shadows to seek refuge in.
It is a privilege to be invited into the highest spire where Aether's pious leader spent her days working restlessly to provide guidance and structure to her associates. There she sits, hands resting on the top of her desk, fingers folded against one another as Devon's finest introduces herself, and speaks of her intentions. One leg is crossed over the other beneath her desk, the tips of her toes idly tapping to a silent crescendo playing in the back of her mind.
Conversations of this nature are always handled with a careful focus, so that Lusamine does not miss out on a single detail. Those eyes remain focused on Eris, taking in her body language-- or lack there of. Had she been made aware of Lusamine's disdain for over-animation? Or was this woman naturally this poised?
Occasionally, notes are written by a steady hand on Lusamine's notepad. Even though she sat atop a monument founded by scientific innovation, she still wrote notes by hand during business pitches.
"Branch Manager Sauvageau is a valuable asset to Aether. I will inform him of your compliment," Lusamine responds plainly once Eris Evans places punctuation at the end of her pitch. Despite of Faba's shortcomings, he had remained a moldable, workable association, one that Lusamine could not afford to let go of.
"Clean energy is a divisive subject, Ms. Evans. It is the singular most important achievement that humans must work towards in order to maintain the wellbeing of this planet, and extend its habitability. There are very few organisms that will be capable of surviving a world stripped of its resources-- countless, remarkable Pokémon are threatened by needless waste," Lusamine speaks.
"There are powerful men in the energy sectors that do not wish to hear reason. What is positive for the environment, is poison to their business. Because of this, there has been pushback on several legal fronts: regulations and laws that are severely outdated need to be changed in many regions, such as Unova. The Aether Foundation has been lobbying against these archaic laws for some time now," she turns in her office chair, and leans down. A manilla envelope is pulled out of a desk drawer, and placed between the two of them.
"When the Delta Incident occurred several years ago, Aether had attempted to contact the Mossdeep Space Station. I wanted to know exactly what had been spotted beyond our atmosphere-- purely to offer incite. We were denied information," she explains, opening the envelope, and retrieving what appeared to be a thesis paper.
"Since then, I have not made any attempts to collaborate with Devon. I have a personal interest in the Hoenn region, Ms. Evans. Its ecosystem is rich in diversity. I spent an extensive amount of time researching the currents and how they effected the local Tentacool population," Lusamine slides the paper over, showing it to her. It is clear that Lusamine's interest in Hoenn was legitimate.
"A competent agent from Devon has been lacking for years now. As I mentioned earlier, you come to me with a great deal of praise, but I have reasons to be cautious. As do you. Anybody with an iota of self-preservation should always tread this field carefully."
There is another pause, allowing the air to settle.
"Where do you see Devon, and yourself, standing in the next decade?"
As soon as she steps foot into the futuristic elevator, ERIS EVANS is quickly adjusting to Aether's social climate, carefully selecting the perfect face to wear in front of the reigning president. Judging by the front desk's frosty, formalized attitude, it's already become clear to the Devon envoy that there will be little time for idle nonsense or small talk once Lusamine's arena is entered. (After all, organizational culture reflects leadership, and vice versa. As expected, Lusamine runs a tight operation.)
The offices of leaders are often purposefully designed to disorient, intimidate, and/or awe wandering newcomers, and President Delacroix's is no exception to the rule. Her sleek space is immaculately kept, almost too clean to the point of sterility, sunlight refracting off the blindingly-white décor. As Eris enters through the doors, she allows herself a short breath before refocusing, nodding appreciatively towards Lusamine's silent attendants, her mask and general demeanor radiating an approachable warmth.
By now, Eris thrives within these high-pressure situations, having played the 'game' over and over again since her Devon ascendency. The process is comfortably predictable by now: she's stepped into many eccentric lairs, knelt before many thrones, and flattered countless oversized egos to satisfy Devon's (and, more importantly, her own) objectives. Despite Aether's impressive presentation thus far, Eris is fully prepared for more of the same...
...and then she and Lusamine lock eyes.
One can learn so much through simple observation, and both powerful women have clearly taken that lesson to heart, immediately pushing past those meaningless smiles to study any quirks, qualities, or cracks within the other. Eris's amethyst hues meet cold, calculating emerald, and--as the researcher digs unsuccessfully for any stray emotions to sink her claws into--Lusamine's analytic gaze seems to pierce her in return, threatening to glimpse the insatiable hunger rumbling just beneath the mask. The shared stare-down is scientific, yet oddly feral, two predators sizing the other up before sharing prey. Or tearing out each other's throats.
An excited shiver runs up Eris's spine. From first glance, Lusamine appears both terrifying and capable, her domain containing no shadows to hide behind. A challenge. This should be very interesting--let's see where it goes...
The moment of silence is fleeting, yet so much has already been said.
"Thank you for seeing me, President Delacroix," Eris replies with that well-maintained smile, graciously accepting Lusamine's invitation and taking a seat, the Alolan sunlight glittering off her glasses as she offers a humbled nod. (A quick mental note is also taken: general directness would probably serve her best today.)
"Devon hired me as an energy scientist in the reorganization that followed the Delta incident seven years ago. I trust you are familiar?" she offers, seemingly unbothered by her mention of the Corporation's most infamous fumble. Even today, Devon's top brass frantically tries to hush up any talk of the otherworldly mistake, but Eris has always maintained a casual attitude when discussing the fallout. It happened. Everyone knows the broader story by now. C'est la vie. She sighs and moves on.
"It has been difficult to replace the talent that Devon lost in the fallout since then. And difficult to regain the trust of the Corporation's allies and the public. The board is desperate to get back to the way things were, but--in my mind--returning to a past equilibrium is so short-sighted. Why not set our sights higher, evolving for the future?"
Eris pauses to gauge Lusamine's reaction, and for a fleeting moment, her eyes glitter excitedly with ambition, that urgent, unchecked hunger for more.
"I, along with other forward-thinkers, know that Devon has the resources and reach to offer so much more, especially if we keep an open mind towards new possibilities. We've reinvested into clean energy research, new technological innovations, and our influence in the Hoenn region remains second to none." (She leans forward slightly.) "However, collaboration is so important for continued relevance in this world. That's why I'm here today: to drag our reclusive giant out of the shadows before you, so you finally can see what we have to offer. I think our goals align, and I hope you will consider a future where we work together."
And with that, Eris's initial pitch is complete with her usual confident flair, no time wasted. There's an art to this game, a certain way to hold one's cards--but Lusamine has enough threads to pull at should she choose to do so. Eris momentarily allows her gaze to flicker past the President, out towards the sparkling waters framed in the window.
"...You keep such an excellent facility here," she remarks wistfully, intentionally, attention refocusing with a warm look. "What was his name--Mr. Sauvageau...he gave me such a detailed tour when I first visited. Excellent accommodations and fascinating research..."

i am being so brave about the fact that captain flint is a story we tell ourselves because we need stories to make sense of the world, need stories to survive. i am being so normal about how throughout most of black sails, stories are at the very centre of it. stories are the source of flint's and silver's power, stories are what make england survive and stories are all the pirates are to the "civilized" world. and in a show with meditations by marcus aurelius as one of the books at its centre i am willing to believe that these stories are at least somewhat connected to what plato tells us in his allegory of the cave. when he tells us how stories shape our reality and how unwilling most of humanity is to break free from these stories. and so what gets me is that in this story, the story of black sails. they are taking a literary pirate who has transcended his fictional beginnings, arguably one of the most famous stories in western society - and they are giving him a soft centre and a reason to rage and then at the turning point, at the moment his violence is supposed to reach its crescendo he's allowed a happy ending. a queer happy ending. and the power of that story in and of itself is what will be the end of me.
#i just watched the final episode and this probably doesn't make sense#but i am literally vibrating with emotions and thoughts about this show#black sails
