TW: pet death, grief, over all sad theme, Poppy
Every day Millie is searching for Poppy. Lucky isn’t a cuddler like Poppy was with Millie. Poppy would never turn Millie away, even when she was sick; she would lay there in pain with her sister and lick her face or paws, cleaning her. It was the sweetest thing. Those girls were not only litter mates, they were best friends. Bonded. I don’t know if Millie knows Poppy has gone over the rainbow bridge. I just know she misses her sister.
We had this little “cave” set up for Poppy when she got sick. It was basically a rectangle beanbag chair propped up with a laundry bin and a chair. It was somewhere she could “hide” but still be easily accessed and seen. Millie wouldn’t go in the cave, but would peek in and see if her sister was there any time she walked past. We took it down this past weekend because there was no reason to have the set up because no one was using it. We put the beanbag chair in between the laundry bin and the chair, but on the floor. Millie has been trying to get under and behind the beanbag chair to see if Poppy is trapped under there. We let her see that she’s not, but she still checks a few times a day.
Millie also has been going into Poppys “house” - a square cat block with an entrance in one side so the cats could climb in there and hide out. Poppy was the only one to use the internal part. Lucky and millie would sleep on the top of it. Since Poppy has been gone, Millie sniffs the inside, and climbs all the way in, flopping over with a sigh.
Millie has been so much more clingy, too. I’m her “purrson”, so she’s always been snuggly with me snd standoffish with everyone else, but now Millie is even more vocal and constantly needs my love. I think it’s a comfort/grief thing for the both of us.
I miss Poppy girl, too. I keep taking out the little container of her fur and her paw prints and just cuddle them since it’s all I have right now. Once I get her ashes back I’m gonna have to find a way to wear a tiny bit 24/7.
Does anyone have any recommendations for those who make jewelry with cremains? Or who makes little urn jewelry? Always appreciate any recommendations to sellers/jewelers you’ve actually used vs a friends store, bug I’ll even take those recommendations-just let me know if you’ve used them or not.
Poppy was such a good girl. She did not deserve to be so sick, in so much pain, being so young. She hadn’t even fully grown yet.

Burial rituals headcanons
Nords obviously held their funerals with burning pyres but they tend to pass down the dead loved ones trusted weapon through the family. Usually the spouse holds the weapon until their children are ready to wield it. After death, the weapon is usually engraved with a personal quote.
Argonians who still hold the hist in high regard, often spread the ashes of their dead loved one in water ways like rivers, streams etc. Their belief is that all water is connected, so their loved one will find their way back to the hist and be reincarnated.
Khajiit when on the road will make custom urns for their fallen loved ones, some even wear small urns to take pieces of them with them. The passed's jewelry is often worn by their surviving family or caravan members as a way to remember them.
Bosmer preserve bones and make sentimental beaded necklaces out of their loved one's bones. The skull was respectfully kept in tact and often sat in an area the family gathered in. It was a way for the deceased to still watch over them.
Vampires, while being a wide variety in themselves, have a similar ritual noticed among the scattered clans of Tamriel. If the clan members can recover their body, the fallen is cremated and scattered before sunrise, so they can see the sun shortly before their soul would be sent to Oblivion.
Much has been lost on the Dwemer but interesting finds have been found in ruins across the land. Rooms that were built to resemble tombs had coffins against the walls. Inside were masks assumed to be worn by the corpse of a dead Dwemer. Each found seems to be personalized as no two have been the exact same. Sadly, mostly just ash have been found in the coffins, the whereabouts of the corpses is yet to be determined. We can guess that it was a similar process Nords went under when becoming draugr, minus being undead tomb caretakers.
The underground Falmer have been noted to have mourning rituals under careful study. The corpse is covered in a putrid oil that wards off hungry charus from digging up the grave and eating it. Then, they work on a grave marker shortly before burial. Instead of their loud shrieks and clicks, those in attendance were noted to make low rumbling and chittering noises.

2,000-Year-Old Goth Cemetery Unearthed in Poland
Archeologists in Poland have uncovered a vast Goth cemetery brimming with silver jewelry dating back to the fourth century.
Olaf Popkiewicz, an archaeology video content creator on YouTube, spotted the jewelry — two silver necklaces; two silver fibulae, or brooches; and beads that once belonged to a third necklace — while walking along the Wda River. He notified a team of park archeologists who excavated the site, which sits within the protected Wda landscape park in central-northern Poland.
"In three weeks, we managed to explore over 250 square meters [2,700 square feet] of the cemetery and discover 50 Gothic graves," park representatives wrote in a translated Facebook post. Buried alongside the dead, archeologists found a rich collection of grave goods, including pottery, brooches, amber beads and more jewelry decorated with snake motifs.
The excavated area likely represents a fraction of the ancient burial site, which researchers believe may span more than 2.5 acres (1 hectare). "This is probably only the beginning of our adventure," the post said.
The Goths were a Germanic tribal people who, according to some accounts, migrated from Scandinavia and settled across Europe in the first century A.D. These "barbarians" famously sacked Rome in A.D. 410 and later split into two kingdoms: the Visigoths, who flourished in Iberia and southwest Gaul (modern-day France); and the Ostrogoths, who dominated in Italy. These kingdoms were relatively short-lived, however, and the last Goths fell to the Moors in A.D. 711.
Gothic tribes inhabited northern Poland between the first and fifth centuries, during their southward migration from Scandinavia to the Roman Empire. More than 2,000 Goth burials have previously been unearthed in the region near the village of Wielbark, which revealed an early Goth culture that stretched from the southern coast of the Baltic Sea to what is now western Ukraine.
The newly excavated site revealed both buried remains in pit graves and cremations in urn burials. When researchers analyzed urns discovered near Wielbark in 2019, they found that some of them had been crafted specifically for cremation as they could not retain liquid, making them useless for everyday purposes such as cooking.
Goths living in what is now Poland during Roman times were talented gold- and silversmiths, according to Magdalena Natuniewicz-Sekuła, a researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw who was not involved with the new find.
In 2020, archeologists discovered a Goth burial ground in the village of Weklice, also in northern Poland, holding hundreds of silver ornaments that "were made of a very high-quality metal, the fineness of which even exceeded the composition of currently produced jewelry," Natuniewicz-Sekuła told the news website Science in Poland. The quality of the jewelry — including bracelets, clasps and outfit decorations — was as high as ornaments from the Roman Empire, she added.
Archeologists hope to excavate the rest of the Goth cemetery discovered at Wda landscape park before it degrades. "Unfortunately, the conditions of a large part of the cemetery means that urgent excavations are needed to help save and preserve the site," park representatives wrote on Facebook.

What happened to Hanzo’s mom? What was she like?
thank you so much for asking!!!!!
I go back and forth on it, but rn My hc is
Her name was Eiko and she was a blacksmith with the Shirai Ryu as well as a very skilled warrior. Even after she and Kaede left the clan to raise their family (and due to some ideological differences between Kaede and the grandmaster) she would run missions for them when needed.
The missions were never anything super dangerous, mostly reconnaissance and sabotage bc she had people she wanted to get back to, but she used to be very good at assassinations
She died while on what should have been a very routine mission when Hanzo was 12 and his younger siblings, twins Hana and Ryuji, were 5, and Kade never forgave the clan for asking her to go
Eiko was a very blunt woman, she said what she meant and meant what she said and didn't see much of an issue with that philosophy. Occasionally her words came off rather harsh but she didn't see much issue with that either
She was a master of the rope dart, which Hanzo learned to honor her
Could not cook to save her life, not even slightly.
She told the best stories tho, to the point where the other kids in town would bother her at work to get her to tell them stories. It got Hanzo a lot of street cred amongst his peers bc she was his mom and she was Cool
despite her bluntness, she was fundamentally kind. If you needed help, she would give it, end of. She wasn't always nice, but she was kind.
Hanzo was a mama's boy, he thought she was the coolest thing ever and wanted to be just like her when he grew up, even training to be a blacksmith
Eiko had her hair cut short to make it easier to manage in the forge, only long enough to tie it back into a ponytail
she also loved the colour green, it was her favorite and all her clothes had green in them.
Despite the fact that Kaede never really wanted to connect with his Ainu heritage, or pass it on to their kids, Eiko learned what she could from an ainu woman they lived near and made sure to pass those traditions on to Hanzo as well as she could. The woman, Chika, also babysat Hanzo and his siblings and passed lessons down that way
The biggest fight Eiko and Kaede ever had was over whether or not to give Hana Shinue (traditional Ainu tattoos) and Eiko only relented because they didn't know anyone who could actually do them
As per her wishes and Shirai Ryu custom, Eiko was cremated upon her death and her ashes were given to her husband and children
When he left, the urn with his mother's ashes and a few clothes were all Hanzo took with him, and he refuses to regret it even if he feels a bit guilty over taking her from them. In his mind, they got to keep her clothes and jewelry and pictures and the home she had lived in, so it was only fair that he got to keep this
Hanzo's rope dart was also made by her hand, she had forged it for herself but left it with the Shirai Ryu when she and Kaede left, with it being gifted to Hanzo by the grandmaster as a welcome present
lemme know if y'all wanna hear more about Hanzo's family

My Beloved Cat - Ginger
This is about my cat who is dying, just a warning for those who can't see that right now.
How do you choose an urn for a pet that hasn’t passed yet?
She won’t care, she’s a cat, there’s no color or shape or material or sentiment for her to say, “I like the idea of resting here.”
She will be ash and finely ground bones. I don’t believe in an afterlife and I’m sure that will be the end of her, of us.
But will her ash and bone, changeable to many shapes, filling the spaces the way she once did cracks in my heart, will they find the space comfortable and comforting? Will they feel closed in and claustrophobic? I know they won’t actually feel. I know. They will be inert in their plastic wrap inside her urn.
But will she find peace and solace?
I won’t.
But like all parents, I want better for my children.
I think I’ll choose ceramic. Earthen and warm between my hands. No risk of damage when I cry. I can cradle her close that way. The blue one with the paw prints will do. (It costs extra. I don’t know how to feel about that.)
It asks for an engraving, 25 characters in 3 lines to sum up the whole of my love. If someone finds it in the future, will they know how important she was to me? What the fuck am I supposed to write?
My Beloved Cat
Ginger
Three steps down, four to go.
What keepsakes would I like? There’s two included in the price, and three of them are free. The ash pendants cost extra.
I know I want the ink paw print. I’ve gotten the sand one before, but it looked unnatural . I had hoped to rest my finger in the dip of her toes and feel closer to her. Instead I felt disappointment. No. No sand. Ink looks softer and I can trace where her fur will smudge and pretend to pet her that way.
I’ve done the fur clipping key chain before too. It looked fake and disconnected and I think I lost it in my hatred of the plastic keeping me from touching her again. But I don’t wear jewelry, so maybe I should get it anyways. But my dad gave me $300 to cover the base service and freebies. The money I saved for this can go to silly extras.
I’ll get the tree of life pendant. The thin metal can warm on my chest or in my pocket or stay cool on the mantel. I can take her with me when I need her support again.
(Did you know I didn’t kill myself so I could keep loving her longer?)
(Will this pendant help me the next time it happens?)
(She meowed at me this morning as she demanded pats in my lap. Cancer doesn’t care that she’s dying at 10 years old. Why can’t you live with me forever baby girl? It’s not fair to miss you while you’re still here, withering or not.)
I added the stupid key chain too.
It said that would be 15 dollars more now. I took it off and the ink print is no longer free.
There is $41.56 in taxes for the services and mementos. I’ve doubled the base cost already and I can't afford much more beyond this.
Step 6:
I hereby certify that I am the owner or authorized agent for the owner of the animal described and I hereby authorize the above specified method of disposition. In authorizing the cremation of animals, I hereby agree to indemnify and hold The Company and their agents, managers, and employees harmless for any claims, lawsuits, or other actions, including damages, costs, expenses, an attorney’s fees, brought against them by a third party claiming that the cremation of an animal was unauthorized.
Please sign below using your touch screen or mouse.
(My name looks like a child wrote it. I feel like one. I just want my kitty.)
Step 7: Legal Disclaimers Dispute Resolution by Binding Arbitration Abandonment Waiver of Jury Trial (this one is in all capital letters, like they’re yelling at me) Severability Attorney’s Fees Initial Here
(I don't believe in god, but god, please, help me.)
They didn’t list an 8th step, but the 8th step is payment.
I double check my bank account and confirm I’ll get paid this Friday so the extra costs aren’t hitting when they shouldn’t.
$586.56 to lose my baby.
They will call me later and I can download steps 6 and 7 for my records.
How do you choose an urn for a pet that hasn’t passed yet?
By crying silently at work, watching the clock tick down to my next meeting, and imagining a future where I can hold her urn ashes close to me in the morning. I can sip my coffee and still watch the birds with her that way.
I hope she likes it. She’ll never see it, her final resting place.
But I hope she likes it.

prompt 21: grave
The village of the Whispering Stars interred their dead between the roots of a tree, or within caskets hung from the branches. People of Dalmasca, even under Imperial rule, preferred cremation. The bravest of them snuck out afterwards, to pour water over the remains. In Eorzea, the varying city-states each had their own preferences but tended to go for carved stone tombs or simple wooden boxes, the deceased wrapped in shrouds that varied as widely as their circumstances did. Pavo had learned that the Drybone Puk tribe cremated their dead and set the urns in catacombs within the cliffs, while the Bayaqud of the Azim Steppe often laid theirs out on a high place and let the scavengers do their work.
He’d found himself thinking a lot about graves, lately.
Kalju of the Miret-Moor, the Butcher of Barheim, founder and leader of the Red Dawn band of revolutionaries, was probably dead.
“Never say a man’s dead until you’ve seen his body,” Kalju had always told him. “And then stab it a few times to make sure.”
Well. Kalju had left him in the Garamsythe Waterways with the Garleans bearing down on his position, his last words to Pavo telling him to flee. He wasn’t around to give advice anymore.
Pavo set down the sketchbook he’d been idly doodling in for the past half-bell, staring out the window down to the quiet streets of a free Dalmasca below. In other moods, better moods, he could gaze out for bells to watch people go by, but now he took in the cobblestone streets and painted sandstone walls without really seeing any of it. His mind was full of the shadows of the Waterways, Kalju’s dark face and white hair lit with rippling firelight. Everything had stank of moss and mud and blood, and his teacher’s hands on his shoulders had been tight enough to bruise.
He’d wanted to stay, at the time. He’d been an idiot.
He reached for his—cold—cup of tea, grateful that he hadn’t been painting today. Accidentally drinking paint water was not his idea of a good time.
He drank. It was sweet and spiced, just the way he liked it. Kalju had called it a frivolous extravagance while their brethren labored and fought for a free Dalmasca. Kalju had called a lot of things frivolous extravagances. Like desserts, and flashy jewelry, and music, and theater performances. He’d always claimed that when he died, he just wanted to be rolled into a sheet and dumped in the desert. “No need to waste the wood on me,” he’d muttered when he was in one of his moods. “There’s those that need it more.”
Pavo had opened his mouth, thought about saying But you’re still a wood-warder of the Whispering Stars, or But you love Dalmasca so much, let us honor you, and closed it again, silent. He wondered, now, if he should have said something.
The tea was sweet. The wind brought the scent of someone grilling meat. He was well-rested, comfortably dressed, and nothing hurt. His daggers rested quietly in their sheaths.
He wondered if the old man had found a grave yet.
