RBing this for the commenter on my other post, and for anyone else that's interested - Welsh having double letter phonemes is (in part) why/how it's a phonetic alphabet.

We don't have to learn rules about when a certain letter combo makes a particular sound - they always sound the same.

So C is always a hard sound like at the stat of 'corn', while Ch is a guttural, throaty sound that isn't really found in English. Somewhat similar to the end of the word "loch", or the noise you make when you're trying to shift mucus from the back of you throat.

D is like the D sound at the start of 'duck'. Dd is like a hard 'th' sound in English - like in the middle of 'mother'. Meanwhile, Th in Welsh is the soft 'th' sound - like at the end of 'moth'.
