[230303] ATEEZ are showing the world another side of K-pop by Taylor Glasby of i-D
Going stratospheric despite their small agency beginnings, the arena headliners discuss manifesting success and their secret ambitions.
ATEEZ have just played a raucous show to 20,000 fans at Londonâs O2 Arena. Backstage, with the adrenalin still pumping, Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yeosang, Mingi, San, Wooyoung, Yunho and Jongho are talking about football. Mingi, deep-voiced, his cropped hair cotton candy pink, is a Chelsea fan. Jongho, the bandâs youngest at 22, follows Spurs. âWhich is better?â asks Mingi. My tentative, uninformed guess (âSpurs?â) yields triumphant hoots and disappointed groans, as Jongho reaches over for a fist bump and hi-five. This exchange isnât so much about football, as it is a reflection of ATEEZ wanting to make everyone they encounter feel welcome â a habit unchanged despite their stratospheric rise through the global pop landscape since debuting in late 2018.
During their week-long stay, they meet fans (known as ATINY) at a signing event, make late-night TikToks beneath the glow of Big Ben, go live on YouTube from a cosy corner of a hotel room, and watch South Korean forward Son Heungmin score at a Tottenham Hotspur game. The clubâs home stadium (soon to host BeyoncĂŠâs five London concerts) leaves a lasting impression on Yeosang: âWhen I saw how big it was and how loud the people were, I thought about how I want to be an artist that can play there,â he says in his slightly raspy voice. Wooyoungâs thoughts, however, linger Stateside in the wake of their most recent EP, Spin Off: From The Witness, earning them a second Top 10 entry on the Billboard 200 in early January. âI donât know if itâs a team goal or my own,â he admits, âbut I do want a #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Hoping for it to happen is the easy part, but whatâs necessary is the confidence and bravery in the belief that it will happen.â
ATEEZâ ambitious nature is an overarching constant to their rapid growth as individuals and artists, useful as both a touchstone of their success and a beacon for their creative output. It was present on their first record, Treasure EP1: All To Zero, which set up a rebellious narrative (now a complex and sprawling alt-world storyline) just as much as it drives their meteoric singles and the exploratory genre-overlaps of their B-sides. As a result, theyâve become a prolific and landmark group. The World EP.1: Movement (their ninth EP, out in July 2022) was ATEEZâ first platinum-selling release, a major accomplishment for an idol group from a relatively small K-pop agency.
Hongjong, the bandâs leader, thinks and talks fast (today, in English) but he pauses to take a moment to muse over their trajectory. âMany people say that I can be proud of being a group from a small company that has made their own way. So if we continually do it like this with ATINY, then in the future people might agree that ATEEZ have made a change in K-pop. I think for now though, we havenât done enough.â
They hope, notes Seonghwa (the bandâs eldest member at 24), that their achievements will eventually be on a broader scale. âWeâd love to be the people behind that movement,â he says. Hongjoong nods in agreement: âI want for us to provide people with a better understanding of K-pop worldwide. There are people who continue to say that K-pop is so technical and manufactured but K-pop isnât just a single genre; each group has a different type of art and I want to show how we express our art to everyone. When I look into the crowd at concerts, I can see so many people of all ages and backgrounds yet stereotypes against the artists and the fans still exist.â
In the early days of ATEEZ, it was evident that Hongjoong and Mingi played a key role alongside their music production team, Edenary, and that a sense of individualism seemed to be encouraged in the groupâs performances. These are both now acknowledged as strengths in their arsenal. The Fellowship: Break The Wall, their third world tour, serves to highlight their unified stance while showcasing the membersâ idiosyncrasies â from dance style to sense of humour â but also how comfortably they inhabit the stage.
âDuring our 2019 Expedition tour, we learned a lot about how to perform with every show we did,â says Yunho, an effortlessly impressive dancer. âThen during the pandemic, we studied and developed how to really make the performance; working on the stage configuration and synchronisation of moves amongst ourselves. When we came back to Europe and the US last year for the Fellowship: The Beginning of the End tour, we were able to see how everything weâd worked on and our personal growth came together on that stage.â
For some members, the process has involved looking beyond the stage in order to feel more at home on it. Yeosangâs regimented program of working out put him physically and mentally in a stronger place: âI relieve my stress while exercising, but my breathing got better and my muscles also got better, so overall it connected into a great result on stage.â San and Seonghwa also turned inward, sifting through mental libraries of borrowed or imaginary traits to build and inhabit new characters for their performances. Â
âI always have a lot of imaginative thoughts,â says Seonghwa, whose general serenity is replaced by a lightning-strike energy on stage and sparks of playfulness when you least expect it. âEven before sleeping, I tend to think about fantastical things,â he continues. âI use these to decide on how Iâm going to be on stage and make sure the atmosphere matches with elements like my outfit.â
âFor San, itâs movies and dramas [that inspire his performances], he takes those characters on,â explains Wooyoung. San, widely lauded for having an explosive stage presence, makes his creative choices the day of. âIf thereâs something I think of that I want to do that day, I share it with everyone to see if it will be okay. Then we create that image together and I simply express myself.â
Wooyoung, who is both mischievous and magnetic, looks to those he admires for guidance. âI mostly look at videos of our seniors â Jimin (BTS), Taeyang (Big Bang), Hoshi (SEVENTEEN), thereâs so many â I get inspiration from them and make it my own on stage.â Itâs a process also adopted by Yunho. âThere are artists that I can pull from, like Rain, learning from them in order to realise my own style,â Yunho says. âOn stage, itâs just me, Iâm myself, but I have all this in the back of my mind.â
The title of their current tour, The Fellowship: Break The Wall, is derived from last summerâs single, âGuerrillaâ, on which the phrase âbreak the wallâ is chanted with increasing ferocity, culminating in a screamo-style vocal outro. Itâs one of the showâs many high points, with ATINY putting their everything into screaming along with the band. The atmosphere grows feverish, the stage bathed in red light as the giant screens flash through the dystopian city of their storyline. Itâs unbridled to the point of being transcendental. San grins, reflecting on this moment. âItâs difficult to explain,â he says of the experience, while Hongjoong sees in it the removal of cultural barriers through music. âI see ATINY during âGuerrillaâ singing along really loud and really tough,â he says. âThey come to our show, they memorise our lyrics, they shout. Thatâs how theyâre breaking the wall, by coming together.â
Since last October, ATEEZ have been playing arenas across Asia, the US and Europe, adding extra nights as they go in order to accommodate the demand, and garnering rave reviews â even from broadsheet media, for whom K-pop remains a confusing phenomenon â in the process. But their feet, heart and heads remain earthbound. âNothing in this world is guaranteed,â says Wooyoung. âWeâre always grateful for everything. Itâs something weâve discussed as a group, but itâs all thanks to ATINYâs love and support that weâre where we are now. To become global artists and a good influence on even more people, we have to hold a sense of responsibility to give our all on stage and deliver our truth. Honestly, itâs less about dreaming of an unknown future and more about how we have to work harder so we can go even higher and pave our own path.â
ATEEZâ success is holistic in form: personality, performance and music. A harmonious but intriguing balance of authenticity and polish. Their impressive discography features recurring motifs (waves, moon, light) and ideologies (power, truth, rebellion, movement), yet Mingi and Hongjoong â who have written lyrics on every ATEEZ track so far â admit theyâre still learning how best to combine whatâs on their minds with whatâs conducive to furthering their storyline. It is, they agree, not always an easy task.
âItâs absolutely hard to focus on so many themes,â says Hongjoong. âSometimes my brain stops, so I watch movies or our music videos again. I think too much when I write but, after that work, the lyrics have more power for the fans who know our storyline; they get different emotions and a different effect when Iâve done that work well. Itâs really hard but itâs important to do.â
Hongjoong had an epiphany when he picked up a camera while touring last year. âThere's such fierce competition â not just in music but all industries â so if thereâs no purpose, Iâve always found it really hard to create freely. We have continuous deadlines. I do the first album, then the second, and once I complete the second album I have to start on the third. Iâve found my hobby with a film camera. I walk around taking photos and I can see that even if I have no immediate purpose, I can create something.â Itâs something thatâs changed his approach to songwriting. âThese days, when I write lyrics or produce a song, I just start from zero,â he explains. âBefore, if we had a pirate theme, for example, I would start with that as a topic. Thatâs why I found it so hard.â He now works backward, getting down exactly what he wants to say before connecting it to the narrative markers. âItâs quite different but itâs more comfortable for me and the results are better than before.â
Hongjoong and Mingi, the groupâs rappers, point to last yearâs "Halaziaâ as the hardest storyline track to pen. âThe atmosphere of the song is already quite difficult and complex,â Hongjoong notes, looking over to Mingi, who explains his process of cataloguing his many thoughts to later draw from. âI write down a lot of them as memos on my phone, so I always go back to them to see if they match what weâre going through (as a group); thatâs how I write my lyrics,â he says. âSometimes Iâll think of it as writing a script, to really get into that persona."
Mingi and Hongjoong are not the only collectors and creators in ATEEZ. âIn my case,â says Seonghwa, âI always memo whenever I hear a line from a song or a line from a poem that I like, just for me to look back on. Iâm the type to jot down my feelings if I experience something special. These help me when I write letters or want to say something to ATINY because Iâm able to better word my feelings.â San, meanwhile, cites legendary South Korean poet ë í죟 (Ra Tae-joo) as an influence. âI love poems too â Iâve been writing my own but I keep them to myself,â he says. âThey can be about my feelings on a certain day, the weather, objects or characters. Iâm able to lay out my feelings like this.â
Now in their fourth year, ATEEZ remain as set on the idea of constantly challenging themselves as they were when they were hungry rookies. Take Jongho for example, whose rich, gut-punching vibrato forms the backbone of many of their songs. When he listened back to The World EP.1: Movement for the first time, he admits that he was âworried because my voice was used in ways that I hadnât tried before, and I wondered how my vocal colour was going to fitâ. He sat down with their producers and worked through âhow we could still make it still an ATEEZ song and match my tone, while trying something new. Iâve gained more confidence â it makes me want to do better for all the albums to come.â
Hongjoong laughs. âIt means our next albums are, uh, a big thing,â he reveals, knowingly. âThere are so many good K-pop and pop stars that if we want to go higher, we have to have more good songs and try other genres, too.â But even as he muses on ATEEZâ continuing expansion, the idea of one day becoming âtoo big to failâ doesnât appeal to him. âNo, absolutely not that,â he says, gaze steady. âI want ATINY to be able to tell us if something is bad. I like it when they do this because we donât want to just give them our popularity. I want to give them good quality, not just a song or a video or a performance.â Does the fact that music is subjective; that no single song can please everybody, bring some comfort? âWe try to find the middle ground,â Hongjoong says. âThe first thing to note is that if we think itâs really great but someone else says that they think itâs trash, then we donât really care what they think. But when weâre unsure and questioning and someone says, âYeah, itâs badâ, then ok, we go back to square one.â
The thought of ATEEZ honing their creative output through repeated baptisms of fire might well upset some fans, but the band are not only accustomed to the fame gameâs highs and lows but wholly pragmatic in the face of its shadows. So when Wooyoung says heâs aware of âmany peopleâ who openly disparage their music, Hongjoong shrugs a little as he responds. âYeah, there are. We talk about this a lot together, but if there are many more haters than before, it just means weâre more popular than before,â he reasons.
The group finds positive equilibrium via a heartfelt focus on ATINY, and all that comes with being an idol group who are years into a very successful career. âWhen we look at line-ups now, weâre closing the show,â says Wooyoung. âAnd as we perform, we see the other artists watching us, and we realise we have more responsibility. Firstly to ATINY, who have been loving us and supporting us from the start, but thereâs also a responsibility to spread K-pop and Korean culture because weâre travelling around the world as Korean artists.â
One of ATEEZ many dualities is that while they have big, burning aspirations â Billboard charts, Grammys, performing at the Super Bowl â that make them look at each other starry-eyed, some of their ambitions are precious in a different way: theyâre simpler, more immediate. âIâd like to be happier than the day before,â says Mingi. âAnd I want for us to never change our sincerity toward music and gratitude to our fans,â adds Seonghwa. This is echoed by San, who adds that ultimately, âIâd be satisfied if ATEEZâ name came up when someone asks who the coolest artist is at the end of the year.â
âI want to make more events with ATINY,â says Hongjoong. âThatâs a goal for this year because we always miss them and they always miss us.â Jongho, sitting in the middle of the group, is smiling. Heâs been manifesting a more personal ambition. âBy next winter I want to be able to snowboard,â he says. âI want to buy my own board, go down the mountain and not fall.â

Then came Macs, digital audio, ten years of IT-projects and finally, iOS. Nowadays he lives his life surrounded by Objective-C code, and he sometimes thinks cornflakes look a bit like people. Oh, and he doesn't do Twitter.
Joost van den Broek Joost van den Broek is a producer, composer, arranger and keyboardplayer based in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Starting out as a keyboardplayer for several metalbands like After Forever touring all over the world, he finished his conservatory with honour in musicproduction, keyboards and classical arrangement. Since then he been working as a freelancer in his own studio on several productions, compositions and arrangements, for acts/events like: Ellen ten Damme, Symphonica in Rosso, Wende Snijders, Games in Concert, Ben Saunders, Qlimax. Epic moviescores and/or/in combination with (pop/alternative)rock is what defines his style the most.
Arjen Schut Arjen Schut is a sound designer based in Hilversum, The Netherlands. As a freelancer Arjen has worked on numerous projects, both on location and in his own studio. Arjen is involved in sound effect creation for all sorts of media, but has a strong focus on interactive and animation projects. International blockbuster Killzone 3 being one of the larger projects.
I have taken upon myself to contact some of these artists, just in case they were open about talking or sharing information about the animation they worked onto. Is it a bad idea, or a good one? I don't know but that's the most straightforward direction one can take. I will warn you if I ever receive any response, positive or negative.
I forgot to link before the official page, on the Anikey Animation website, for their work on Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales. Not only does it contain large, high-quality screenshots of the artwork, but their "Production" page also has one concept art for the storybook. They also list the credits of the app as such:
Title: Epic Tales - Hansel & Gretel
Release: 2012
Directed by: Albert 't Hooft & Paco Vink
Animation by: Jelle Brunt, David Muchtar & Ruben Zaalberg
Backgrounds by: Paco Vink & Sjan Weijers
Music by: Joost van den Broek
Sounddesign by: Arjen van der Schut
Producer(s): Paul Hanraets for Cloud Castle Interactive
AppAdvice still has a page dedicated to the application. There is also a review by the MacTrast website that is quite interesting because, while today the pictures contained within it are "dead files", in the Wayback Machine you can fetch them back, and they are pretty rare screenshots of the game! Here's an additional Dutch article I forgot to add earlier. Again, not much to add since they all basically just announce the game's release and rephrase the storybook's commercial description.
I also don't think I have added this to my previous posts, but Cartoon Brew also had a page for the app's launching, which contained this text:
The Hague, the Netherlands â April 24, 2012 â Hansel and Gretel â Epic Tales animated storybook is the first in a series of tales as told by Silvertongue, the likeable dwarf and storyteller, and is now available on the Appstore for IPad and IPhone.
Hansel and Gretel â Epic Tales animated storybook offers a world filled with whimsical characters ranging from pesky gnomes to witty dwarfs; from brave children to wicked stepmothers and cunning witches.
âBut we are not just another fairytale App,â says Paul Hanraets, founder and producer. âWhat sets Epic Tales apart from other storybooks are the incredible production values. Each of Epic Tales storybooks are digitally hand-drawn by our award winning animators, and offer stunning 2d animations, professional voice acting, original music scores and ambient sounds by game industry veterans. These elements combined offer spellbinding interactive environments that are sure to draw readers even deeper into the story.â
âOf course, our alternating witty and wacky humour and the high quality of our animations are amongst the things that separates Hansel and Gretel from other storybooks,â says creative director Albert ât Hooft.âHowever, what ultimately distinguishes Epic Tales is the implementation of our central storyteller, Silvertongue the dwarf.â Using the magic of pesky gnomes, Silvertongue brings the stories to life and narrates them.âSilvertongue used to be quite the adventurer, travelling the world in search of the most intriguing tales and stories, and now looks after your storybook collection in his humble bookstore. He is a truly gifted storyteller who can take an audience from a gasp of fright to a roar of laughter in just the twist of a phrase.â
Epic Tales is a series of high quality, interactive fairytales that allows you to not only enjoy enchanting tales, but to experience their magical worlds more closely than ever before. Children will love the sense of wonder and discovery, while adults will certainly appreciate the clever and wacky humor.
A final piece to add to the dossier so far is Muchtar Productions' page for Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales. Muchtar Production is the WordPress website of David Muchtar, a 2D animator and illustrator who worked on the Epic Tales animation as a (I quote) "Rough and Clean-up animator". He notably put within his portfolio an important number of concept art for the game's character designs. But, as with last time, I will keep it for the NEXT post!
Or... an almost final piece. I wanted to keep this for a much later post, but I ultimately decided to share it here. I vaguely described before one unofficial source for content about "Hansel and Gretel - Epic Tales". And that is an online review, a Youtube video, by a Youtuber named "Crazy Mike" specializing in app reviews. Here is the video, and the reason why this video is important (beyond it being the last remaining video review - unless I manage to get back the one from the defunct website) is because so far it is the only visual recording we have of the app outside of the trailers. Not only that, but at one point Crazy Mike opens the list of chapters within the app - which gives us a full glimpse of the story's main episodes, with thumbnails of each "tableau". Mind you, it is tiny details at the bottom of the screen so we can't get much of it... But with all the additional material I gathered, it will be a key element in my reconstruction of what the storybook looked like and was about.

Of all the photos of Jamie at that event, the Coach Presentation for Menswear 2015, there is only one singular picture where Jess is visible. And it's barely half her face. Here are the pics:
Also, if you notice, there is a blonde woman sitting in front of Jess, also in the front row, next to Matilda.
This is a friend of Jess's, who she went with, Harriet Verney. A stylist, DJ, and writer/editor, at the time:
Harriet also did a write up for the Grazia Daily publication about the whole of Fashion Week, talking about how on Day 1 at this Coach event, she spoke with Jamie and Matilda, as she sat next to them in the front row:
Here is Harriet and Jess together at another event for Coach the following month, where it suggests that Jess was just...simply attending multiple Coach/fashion events, maybe with/maybe without Harriet, because they were both stylist/in the fashion world at the time:
Funny enough, Harriet now also has a creative agency, with a website just as bland and vague as Ice Studios, and Harriet is also not listed on the website:
Her LinkedIn also says she was a Talent Agent:
Just something I found interesting and fun to note for no particular reason. :)
So, anyway, final thoughts: She had a reason to be there that has nothing to do with stalking and that's when they first met, being introduced by Harriet, who was seated in the front row beside them.

do you ever think about how in 1970 on earth 616 gwen stacy and hobie brown first meet when he blasts through her living room window in a spider-man costume.
do you ever think about how gwen nearly escapes her narrative as the doomed good girlfriend by fleeing to london and the event that gets her on the plane is hobie standing guard outside her apartment in his prowler costume because he's worried spider-man will get her killed, and how that's hobie's first attempt at escaping his narrative as a reluctant villain. do you ever think about how he's right, because when gwen's ultimately drawn back to new york, she's murdered a few months later and it's arguably spider-man's fault.
do you ever think about how on earth 138, the world where hobie's anger at systemic inequality is validated as his parallels to peter parker are finally expanded into making him the spider-man, gwen stacy, rock icon, is hobie's idol whose music gave him a creative outlet for his anger, the language to articulate it and a community to support and be supported by, (whose murder probably radicalized him even further) and therefore is arguably the architect of the revolution he starts
do you ever think about how on earth 65, the world where gwen's anger at being denied respect and agency is validated as her white feminist tendencies are called out and deconstructed, gwen's radicalization arc begins with hobie blasting her in the face with spray paint and calling her on her girlboss bullshit (which she accepts and commits to fixing), and ends with hobie having quietly watched her redemption for a year and concluding that she's grown and changed into such a genuine hero that he decides to memorialize her
do you ever think about how in the worlds where they get to be the heroes, where hobie keeps the costume instead of borrowing it and it's his from the start, where gwen gets a life defined by herself and not her boyfriend, their alter egos' ideologies are shaped by their worlds' versions of each other and if not for having met each other they might never have become heroes at all
do you ever think about how as soon as spider-gwen and spider-hobie became aware of each other's existence they became fast friends in web warriors and hobie starts treating gwen like a peer instead of a love interest within one issue instead of years of publication like miles and peter, they were stuck to each other like glue during the battle in spidergeddon and were flirting in the corner of spider-brit's funeral, promising to be there for each other, and then they never met again
do you ever think about how gwen-65 and hobie-138 have both been informed by powerful multiversal beings that they're doomed to fates they'd both hate, but he's doomed to die young and have his memory disrespected posthumously by capitalists and she's doomed to live long after losing everything that makes her who she is for a life as spider-man's wife and babymaker, and they've both fully internalized their fates given how hobie doesn't care about his own self-preservation and gwen's coming untethered from her world and being pressured into 616, the home of the guy she's going to be forced into a romance with if she's there long enough. they can be heroes, but only for so long before something stops them, and their legacies will undo everything they stood for.
do you ever think about how in atsv, which came out exactly fifty years after the night gwen stacy died, gwen stacy and hobie brown are the closest they've ever been in any canon yet, so close that they may not be a couple but they have a shitload of chemistry and just mentioning each other makes gwen's love interest sweat, that they built that relationship in london and their bond is what sets gwen free from the spider-society, makes it possible to rebuild her personal life, return to her homeworld where she's the main character of her own story, and escape her narrative but in btsv gwen will almost inevitably give in to her role of Miles's Love Interest by the end and he will be expected to cheerlead them
do you ever think about how in every other universe where gwen and hobie have a significant interaction, every single time they get closer and closer to permanently changing their narratives for the better as they get closer and closer to each other. idk man i do.
#ghostpunk#even 616 gwobie goes crazy. making their first attempts at escaping their shitty roles in the story because of each other.#ships passing in the night between a reluctant villain who wants to be a hero and a corruptible heroine who should've become a villain.#both of whom are denied these destinies because it was the early 1970s. but get closer and closer to them the more they're reinterpreted#from strangers to idol and fan to acquaintances to friends with a vibe to friends with textually acknowledged romantic tension.#we sure are moving in one particular direction towards one particular conclusion. i hope we get there someday.

[MAD STARS through Female Eyes] Becky McOwen-Banks, Director, Creative X Global, Meta
[MAD STARS through Female Eyes]
: Becky McOwen-Banks, Director, Creative X Global, Meta
It was the first MAD STARS event Becky McOwen-Banks, director, creative X global, Meta. She also brought their female perspective to the final juries.
Becky has been a creative director, on staff and freelance, at agencies such as M&C Saatchi London, VaynerMedia UK & EMEA, New Republique and FCB Inferno as well as an active member of the SheSays committee.
Becky McOwen-Banks certainly threw herself into MAD STARS. She was a member of the Final Jury and New Stars Jury, as well as a speaker discussing Searching for Innovation? Then Shut Up and Get Out of the Way! A.K.A. Creative Entrepreneurship in Action. Here is her MAD STARS view:
What motivated you to be so involved? What was your impression of MAD STARS 2023?Â
Becky McOwen-Banks: I have been on many global awards juries, but none that ran from Asia. I was keen to join MAD STARS, see the approach, meet more amazing talent and see for myself how it has been growing as an awards to be noticed. The combination of creative showcase and marketing business focus provides a balanced view of the industry, so I was excited and honoured when invited to get involved. I believe in the power of learning and curiosity have driven me throughout my career. The opportunity to visit a city I hadn't travelled to before, spend some time with leaders and creative talent was too good to miss. It is so important that we in the West don't become myopically focussed inwards and forget that there is so much more to discover and uncover.Â
You were on the final jury. What stood out for you in the jury room (and did any work stand out for you in particular)? What were you looking for in the winners?Â
Becky McOwen-Banks: We had a great mix of talent and skills in the Final jury for my categories which meant lots of good discussion about the work. Identifying what is the right work for this specific awards show, at this time and within the specific category makes judging different every time. This year lots of conversations focussed around work that made a difference to the world (like Knock Knock) but also rewarded paying clients for pursuing brave thinking.
A piece of work I loved and have shared since being home is the Ladies of Tang Dynasty for Daning Palace. I'm a typophile - I adore typography - so this was just delicious. The attention to the heart of the concept and then allowing their design minds to fly was brilliant.Â
You were also on the New Stars jury. What did you think of the standard of work and the New Stars themselves as well as the judging experience? What were you looking for in New Stars winners?Â
Becky McOwen-Banks: The NEW STARS jury was tough. There was a lot of great work and so little time. The awards facilitators were very strict with us to get through all of the entries with time for good conversation. It was really interesting seeing the variation in the approaches, and also seeing how some teams seemed to really get under the skin of the issue. The ideas that linked the heart and head were the standout winners, taking such a sensitive topic out of expected channels, to reach audiences wherever they may be - and all with empathy. You won't change behaviour on any topic by shouting at people and trying to shame them. The ideas required an understanding of the educational job that was needed in order to bring people with you and allow the message to be heard as well as the empathetic tone required. The three points I had as advice for all teams was:Â
1: Really question your own thinking. Be your own biggest critic. Would the audience REALLY respond how I am suggesting? Would it really work? What is the simple message they would actually take out and remember? If youâre not strict in your own thinking then CDs or awards juries will be and will dismiss your thinking. Learn to stress test your own ideas. Try them from every angle and always be honest with how effective the idea may be in the actual world. It's only this way you get to water-tight thinking.Â
2: Keep pushing ideas. Some ideas simply weren't evolved far enough, despite having a good insight and idea. Creatives (particularly at the early stages in their career) need to keep pushing to deliver full campaign thinking. It's also a way to test the validity of the idea itself. You can get two executions out of most ideas but then run dry - so push for 3, 4, 5 and show this idea can go anywhere.Â
3: Crafting should always be secondary to the idea - in service of the idea, not instead of it. Great design and entry boards can never hide an average idea. Some entries were beautifully crafted, when I'd advise for this time-limited exercise that they should have been focussed 90% on idea and 10% on the board.Â
Please tell me about your session. Why did you choose the topic and what were its main insights?
Becky McOwen-Banks: Searching for Innovation? Then Shut Up and Get Out of the Way comes from my MBA thesis subject. I am a creative leader committed to innovation and teams. My thesis enabled me to explore the effects that leaders have on their teams, not through their direct actions but through the team design and process they create - and subsequently if these different team designs then have a different impact on the ability to innovate. This felt like a topic that would bring together the MAD STARS audience of leaders and innovation. We are all after ways to learn and enable our teams and businesses to be better, so I thought this was a good way to share some of my findings. I've had a few enquiries for my presentation so I'm hoping that means it landed with some. The main insight is that the traits of leaders (or founders) do affect the shape of teams they create, and this does ultimately impact the ability to innovate. So, we all need to be more aware of the systems we are creating, that we are the ones inhibiting our own success. It also reveals that innovative leaders are those with interactive and interpersonal traits, and that these leaders create more fluid teams.Â
Or to distill that into some simple guidance from my results: 1: Leaders who identify themselves as interactive/interpersonal create more autonomous team shapes 2: A more autonomous team shape results in more identifiable and measurable innovation with the added benefit of team positivity and confidence.Â
