I have had a similar trope happen in real life:

My SO was rushed to emergency one night and we spent the night there. He went to have surgery on the next morning (he’s fine now). But at some point, I was very mad about how we were being treated. They left us hanging on information, we didn’t knew when the surgery was going to happen, who was the doctor, when he was going to leave emergency to go to the room. We knew nothing, and when we got information it was tracked back. I slept half the night at the floor beside his bed (God only knows how I did not caught anything) and half in a very uncomfortable chair, holding his foot to let him know I was there.

So when he finally went to have surgery, he knew I was posing as calm for him, but I was boiling inside.

He went to surgery and I was left to my own devices, without supervision, and without a SO I had to look calm to…
