so in 2019 Safiya Nygaard made a video where she melted together one of every lipstick from CVS.
At timestamp 4:50 in this video, she says "Oh my god, I'm gonna get so many Extrabucks. This is gonna be out of control." Extrabucks are a type of store credit CVS offers to customers that have a CVS card upon purchasing certain items, especially makeup. Also, you get 2% of whatever you spend in Extrabucks every time you make a purchase. You even get $2 Extrabucks for filling 10 prescriptions with them.
Is this kind of predatory? Yes. Can you game the system to pay much, much less at CVS for things than you would normally? Also yes. I know this because I have to be at CVS anyway to pick up my prescriptions, the stuff is cheap, and I'm a college student. I am, as Ms. Nygaard calls herself in the video, an "Extrabucks hoe." (3:46)
And thus, I wanted to find out just how much you would make in Extrabucks from re-creating her experiment today, and how much of the cost of the makeup it would offset.
so. I did that. oops.
disclaimers: Sadly we cannot know exactly how much Ms. Nygaard herself made in Extrabucks, as the deals & coupons at CVS are constantly changing, as does the makeup industry. Also, the 2% cashback thing hadn't been implemented when she first made the video.
So instead we're going to look at what recreating her experiment today would look like, in the hopes that it will approximate the windfall of Extrabucks she must have gotten from this endeavor.
To do this, we will:
Go through the CVS website, through every brand, and through every line in every brand, count how many shades they have, and multiply it by price.
For simplicity’s sake, since Ms. Nygaard only went to physical locations, if a line/brand is out of stock at my CVS (and in the 'search surrounding CVS' tab), we can skip it, but we’ll record the line that was skipped for posterity’s sake. A line has to have at least 2 surrounding CVS in stock for it to count. I don't think anyone can doxx me by looking by what lipsticks are available in my area as long as I don't actually put what area I'm from.
However, if a line/brand is split where some shades are in stock and some shades are out of stock, we will still record every shade, since she did mention filling in holes this way by going to another CVS (4:45-5:05)
Keep track of how much is spent on each line and each brand. I'm not writing down every shade in every line, but I will write down every line, how many lipstick shades are in it, and how much it would cost to get one of each.
No glosses, oils, liners, crayons, balms, etc. it has to be straight lipstick. Also NO PLUMPING
Find every current Extrabucks deal they have that follows a “spend $X on Y, get $Z in extra bucks!” or “buy X number of Y products, get $Z in extrabucks!” formula.
We will mostly be doing this by recording any deals (not incl. individual coupons) that pop up when searching through lipsticks.
Calculate total price
Break down by brand, and then by lines within that brand, for Extrabucks calculation later
Calculate what 2% is of that (for Extrabucks)
Go through each Extrabucks deal and apply it to our current numbers.
For our purposes, we will be assuming no coupons were used in the purchase, so everything counts as “full-price”
Add the 2% to the Extrabucks deal number to get total Extrabucks earned
I'm not doing tax. don't ask me to do tax.
let's get fucking going.
Step 1
note: sometimes they will have one line and then a sub-line within that line. I tried to reflect this with creative indentation.

Covergirl exhibitionist metallic (3 shades, $8.79)
Luna magic bullet lipstick (4 shades, $11.99)
Including a nude version w same stats
Nye expert last (15 shades $2.19)
I chose to stop at page 7 of results for my own sanity and also bc almost everything I was coming across was some version of something I'd already counted.
plus, Ms. Nygaard mentioned having 540 lipsticks from 13 different brands. I have 13 brands, and 487 lipsticks. I think we'll live. some of the out-of-stock ones were probably in stock at her CVS - I know for a fact that I recognized some of the now-out-of-stock Covergirl lipsticks in her video.
Step 2
[I'm going to explain the math for each one so people can picture it, I don't want any of my fellow learning-disabled folks to get lost in the weeds]
Deal: $5 for every $15 spent on Revlon
We spent $1041.57 on Revlon, so $1041.57/15 = 69.44, rounded to 69 - we spent $15 on Revlon 69 times.
69 • $5 = $345
Deal: $10 ExtraBucks Rewards for purchasing 3 Covergirl Cosmetics
We bought 68 Covergirl products, so 68/3 = 22.67, rounded to 22 - we bought 3 products 22 times
$10 • 22 = $220
Deal: $5 ExtraBucks Rewards for spending $15 on L'Oreal Cosmetics
We spent $1421.69 on L'Oreal, so $1421.69/15 = 94.78, rounded to 94 - we spent $15 on L'Oreal 94 times.
94 • $5 = $470
Deal: $5 ExtraBucks Rewards for spending $10 on wet n wild Cosmetics $10 & under
Frankly I’m not sure wet n wild has products that cost over $10, and we certainly didn't buy any
We spent $138.05 on wet n wild, so 138.05/10 = 13.80, rounded to 13 - we spent $10 on wet n wild 13 times
13 • $5 = $65
Deal: $5 for buying 2 Milani
We bought 26 Milani products, so 26/2 = 13 - we bought 2 products 13 times
13 • $5 = $65
Deal: $6 ExtraBucks Rewards for purchasing 2 Maybelline Cosmetics
We bought 58 Maybelline products, so 58/2 = 29 - we bought 2 products 29 times
29 • $6 = $174
Deal: $5 for spening $15 on Nyx - sadly we weren’t able to buy any bc almost all of their fuckin lipstick is liquid and the one that isn’t isn’t in stock fucking anywhere near me. if we had been able to purchase their line (12 products, $9.99 each, $119.88) we would've gotten $35 rip :/
so adding that all up you get $1,339 in Extrabucks
and I'm not even positive I found every deal possible.
Step 3
Total price (not incl. sales): $4,710.67
(including sales: $4,544.81)
so we already have fucking $1,339 in Extrabucks just from deals - this would likely be representative of a ballpark estimate for how much Ms. Nygaard would've gotten in Extrabucks, since the 2% thing wasn't introduced yet. However, she did get 53 more lipsticks than me, so that's something to consider.
Step 4
2% of $4,710.67 = $94.21
(2% of $4,544.81 = $90.89 on sale but idk if they'd count that for Extrabucks)
Steps 5 & 6
so $1,339 of Extrabucks from deals + $94.21 from the 2% thing = $1,433.21 total Extrabucks earned
to figure out percentage, 1,433.21/4,710.67 = 0.3042 converted to percent is 30.42%
so almost a third of the cost of the lipsticks would be offset by Extrabucks.
holy shit dude

TALK TO ME ABOUT MAKEUP PLEASE!!! What are your favorite brands? What product can you not like without? What are your everyday makeup go to's in terms of products you reach for and enjoy, which products do you hate? (Thank you for answering the perfume ask, I also love similar scents and elements!!)
OH MY GOD I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ASK
i have been ITCHING to have some constructive conversations about makeup that are not so much about consumption as they are about techniques, artistry and just the joy of bringing different aesthetics to life. but unfortunately none of my girlfriends are into it to the level i am. i'm obsessed!!!! to anyone reading this, don't use me as a role model, but this is where i'm at LOL 😂 it truly is a hobby for me
What are your favorite brands?
in the past i wouldn't have said i had a favourite brand per se, but i've been converted to being a mac girl! as a result of them not really promoting themselves in online spaces i was not exposed to their products and they kind of flew under the radar, even though we do have mac stores here (quite a few, actually). also the price point lol so i much preferred to buy drugstore when i was younger. but, at this point, i have so much stuff already that i am planning to not buy as much in the future and just purchase one or two mac products every couple of months, because they have so many things!
for example, i love love love how all the mac girls combine their lipsticks and liners and honestly the idea of using a cool-toned lip liner or a contrasting shade for definition has been such a game changer in a world where so many makeup-wearers have taken to maintaining this uniform, dull look (sorry zoomers but clean girl makeup is just not that girl she will never be that girl!!). i also love the limited edition lipsticks they brought back for the 40-year anniversary and literally scoured every website & phoned every mac store in town to get my hands on bubbles, haku and fleshpot ☠️they are such unusual shades, like, first of all, i have to say that i love how the really nude fleshpot looks against a dark liner. it's soooo ~alternative and a fun way to reference the 90s. bubbles & haku are so colour-shifting in the light as well, i just keep staring at them sometimes :)) they are definitely not the type of colours i would usually wear and i'm not the biggest fan of frosts either. but you know what? looking back, this y2k trend did, in fact, slay
i also managed to snag the stone lip liner, which is always out of stock, as you know. they are releasing new ones at the end of the month and i have my eyes on 'greige' as an additional cool-toned liner (these are SO hard to find). to top off my collection, i managed to find the makeup forever liners in endless cacao and even whatever black (and, of course) our dependable drugstore girlfriend rimmel cappuccino.
but, to come back to the question of brands, i've always felt that maybelline are such an accessible source of good quality lipsticks on the cheaper side. their lip crayons are legit one of my favourites of all time. so lightweight on the lips and so easy to apply. the shade 'lead the way' is the best possible charlotte tillbury pillow talk dupe. the superstay vinyl ink liquid lipsticks are also quite good. the superstay MATTE inks will /not/ budge and probably survive the apocalypse if that's your thing. they have a wide selection of everything you might want, but i feel like the lips is where they are truly excellent
other brands from which i've purchased a lot are essence/catrice. similarly, they have a wide range of products of decent quality that you buy at a lower price point. i don't know about their foundations or powders, but i've bought lip liners, lipsticks, nail polishes, highlighters, blushes and they've all been more than fine
i should mention nyx here as well, as they often have cool stuff that goes viral. VERY good source of lip liners. the fixing spray is also very good. would not buy eyeshadow from them though. i did once and it was very patchy and all the purples looked gray and you couldn't really tell the colours apart. as far as eye palettes are concerned, my collection is mainly from urban decay and colourpop
What product can you not live without?
oooooooffff many! 😂 but, if i was in an absolute hurry, i suppose i would have to say concealer. i have dark circles and if, i just had to put one thing on my face, i would have to be practical and choose that instead of something more unhinged. :)) i'm currently using a cream concealer and realised, at my big age, that, if you apply it with a special concealer brush, you can use way less product and get better coverage 🤦 this technique is also a lot more effective at covering any pimples. before this i was using the same sponge i use for foundation application and was always left wanting. ☠️
What are your everyday makeup go to's in terms of products you reach for and enjoy,
for someone who has a lot of stuff (mainly lipsticks, liners and eyeshadows, to be honest), i have a lot of staple products as well that i don't really mess with and keep repurchasing. it's simplified my life a lot because i don't have the energy to keep trying makeup in every single category :))
the COTY airspun loose face powder - there is a lot of product in one unit (35g) and, since i have oily skin, i go through a lot, but one box of this lasts me a few months, which is amazing. before this i was using the fenty loose powder, but it's a lot more expensive and has less product
the MAC extra dimension blush, shade 'into the pink'. i've had this for two years, used it constantly and just managed to hit a little bit of pan. it's life-changing. finally, i had found a cool-toned blush. perfect for everyday and you do not have to think too much when applying because the colour doesn't build up like crazy to make you look like you've been stung by a bee
the essence liquid ink eyeliner. this thing is so cheap, lasts forever and does not smudge. idek how many of them i've used up over the years
the essence lash princess in green. i'm so pretentious about mascara and could never find one that didn't clump. this one is the best i've tried so far.
the rimmel brow this way crayon in the shade 'blonde'. like with mascara, i NEVER liked my eyebrow pencils, the shades were always off somehow, darker than i needed. this is legit the only one that is the exact colour of my brows and fits seamlessly. i go through these constantly. recently, out of curiosity, i've purchased a similar-looking tube, the alverde brow stick in the shade 04 macchiato (for my DM girlies!) and it seems to be doing the same job. relieved to know i have a backup if rimmel ever discontinue theirs!
the urban decay matte fixing spray. this is a holy grail for a reason. it's getting increasingly more difficult to find in my country though. also, i will have to put this under the microscope bc lately it felt a bit powdery on my skin so it's either i didn't shake it enough, they changed the formula or my combination-oily ass face is acting up again
i use these every time i put makeup on, except the mac blush and the urban decay fixing spray, but even so, i use those two very often. they've become regulars in my routine, but they're not the most exciting products (except the mac blush. that is such a pretty shade). but, for fun, i'm very much a glitter and highlighter person 😂 i recently, finally, bought some of the kaleidos highlighters and they truly are incredible in the way they catch the light and how the colours shift when you move. so those are what i'd label the products i look forward to the most atm, along with haku, bubbles, fleshpot and stone
which products do you hate?
so, no matter how much i try, i just cannot get along with lipgloss. unless i'm going to bed! then when i wake up it has done its magic and my lips are a little less dry and chapped 😂 but as a daytime product, it just gets everywhere, it's very sticky and smudgy and i don't like having to constantly check my lips in the mirror to fix it. just a major hassle overall. likewise with lipsticks that are too glossy and never stay in one place. lip oils? why.
i've also had the misfortune to purchase some foundations i really fucking hate and i have been painstakingly trying to finish them (i have a high chance of finishing two of them this autumn), as i don't really like to waste product. the MUP liquid waterproof foundation is way too thick and cakey and the shiseido revitalessence skin glow is way too liquid and patchy. formulation-wise, these products are the exact opposite but both of them turn me into an oil bath lol
i also don't like cream blushes, highlighters or bronzers. i have oily skin and have to set with powder, so it would be an extra hassle for me to make sure these products can still be seen after i apply the powder. i saw that some people set them with the powder versions of the same product, but that just sounds like extra steps to me and just an excuse to hoard even more products and complicate the routine even more
speaking of blushes and bronzers, cool-toned makeup is just so hard to find in general, everything is orange and peach these days. i have been really contemplating some products i've accumulated mindlessly over the years and i'm going to have to declutter a lot of my blushes and bronzers because they just make me look crazy. they are either way too orange or dark or hyper pigmented. i am very pale and do not tan so i really much prefer either just straight up taupe or pinkish blushes. here i really have to recommend c-, j- or k-beauty because there you can find these tones exactly and i can finally wear some flattering shades 😂
and, i have to say, erin parsons and not_another_hanna on TT, who like wearing cool-toned makeup on the regular, are absolute queens and have such a distinctive, stand-out style. you can tell they don't really care about looking conventional and really appreciate the artistry of playing with colours and formulas in interesting ways
i'm including this handy collage to illustrate the kind of looks i'm into atm ✨

As a fandom we need to talk about the mcrxhipdot collabs. We (me) are being scammed. I have all three of the collabs, and the eyeliner in the three cheers one is the shittiest eyeliner I have ever bought. Every matte shadow from all the collections is bad. The liquid lipsticks in the danger days collection are drying and literally burn. The lipsticks in the black parade collection are patchy, taste like crayons, and look like shit. I kept buying them because I thought the art and packaging were creative, but I just saw a post of the Korn eyeshadow pallet and it’s the exact same. Hipdot is putting zero effort into these and charging super high prices, and it’s frustrating that mcr is promoting merch that is such a blatant cash grab.

Like these two pallets slate so close. Also the three cheers and black parade pallets have the same color scheme.

The crayon's design ensures accurate application every time. Whether you're a makeup novice or a seasoned artist, this lipstick is simple to apply.
How to Choose the Right Shade for Your Skin Tone
Before selecting a shade, it is critical to understand your skin's undertone. Are you chilly, warm, or neutral? Knowing this will allow you to select a hue that complements your complexion properly.
Tumblr media
Soft pinks and nudes look great on fair skin. Medium skin tones look excellent in mauves and berry tints, while darker complexions look fantastic in deep reds and purples.
Application Tips for a Flawless Look
Begin by exfoliating your lips to eliminate dead skin. To guarantee a smooth base for your lipstick, apply a nourishing lip balm next.
Tumblr media
Outline your lips with the crayon to create exact edges, then fill in the remainder. The creamy texture allows for easy application without dragging.
Perfecting Your Look with MARS Crayon Lipstick
For a more defined look, pair your MARS Crayon Lipstick with a matching lip liner. This helps to reduce feathering and increases the color's durability.
If you like a softer, more natural look, use your finger to softly smooth the lipstick's edges after application.
Why MARS Long Lasting Crayon Lipstick is a Must-Have
This lipstick is really versatile. It may be used alone to create a strong effect or topped with gloss for more sparkle. Its diverse color palette ensures that everyone can find something they like.
Despite its superior quality, the MARS Long Lasting Crayon Lipstick is reasonably priced, making it available to anyone.
How to Remove MARS Long Lasting Crayon Lipstick
Use a mild makeup remover to remove the lipstick. Oil-based removers are particularly effective in breaking down the long-lasting composition.
Follow up with a gentle cleanser to eliminate all remnants of the lipstick, leaving your lips clean and ready for the next application.
Where to Buy MARS Long Lasting Crayon Lipstick
You can get MARS Long Lasting Crayon Lipstick from a variety of online vendors, including the Good Choice India website. Shopping online provides the convenience of browsing different hues and reading user feedback.

The wet n wild liquid catsuit lipstick was like half the price of the maybelline and so I got two (and the maybelline were like $10-$12, but they were also BOGO 50% so I got 2, plus one other and an ink crayon).
The wet n wild colors are Rebel Rose (so a dusty rose/pink) and Missy and Fierce (a really vivid cherry? red)
The maybelline colors were on the pink/nude side of the spectrum, in Showrunner (a coral/nude pink?), Artist (a pinky plum, as opposed to the Voyager color I have, which is a more red/burgundy plum) and Life of the Party (a bold pink-y magenta). and the crayon is Happy Birthday (halfway between Life of the Party and Showrunner, but with a glitter/shimmer finish).
So I guess I'm going more towards the Trixie side of the color spectrum as opposed to Katya.

Sephora VIB Picks: My Daily Make-Up Essentials
By popular request, all my make-up essentials (including shades!) are linked below. I have sensitive, acne-prone, oily/normal skin. I have hooded eyelids. I wear the same make-up products for class, rotations, and interviews. I value make-up that does not break me out, is long-lasting, and is business appropriate. I’m also attaching a few non-filtered photos so you can see the true appearance/color of the products.
Tumblr media
1. Face Primer: Skin stays matte, pores less apparent, and allows my make-up to last all day. I buy the mini version, which lasts me 6 months.
2. CC cream (everyday wear): I don’t wear foundation but instead wear this full-coverage CC cream. It is my go-to when I go out with friends or special events. It has SPF 50 with a natural, skin-like finish. My shade is “Light”. This 1 tube has lasted me almost 2.5 years because you need so little for a beautiful flawless look.
3. CC cream (business interviews): I loved the matte version of this CC cream while interviewing for residency. The days were often super long (some of my interviews began at 7 AM; I woke up at 5-5:30 AM) and it helped me stay matte, requiring no touch-ups for 7-8 hours. My shade is “Light”.
4. Concealer: Not part of the Sephora sale, but my holy grail concealer. Can cover everything. I am shade “Light Medium”.
4a. Anti-Fatigue Eye Balm: The green tint cancels out red/purple undertones in dark circles. Also leaves your undereyes silky smooth, a perfect canvas for concealer next.
4b. Under-eye corrector: My holy grail! I use shade “Light Medium”. It brightens up my undereyes a ton.
5. Beauty sponge: I don’t wet mine before using it because it often sheers out my coverage. I only buy a new sponge once a year. I wash mine every 2-3 days.
6. Eyeshadow primer: One of my ESSENTIALS! If you have hooded & oil eyelids, this is a MUST to make your eyes last all day. I use the anti-aging version of this eyelid primer, and it makes my liner last for 12+ hours. The standard size has lasted me years (seriously, it’s been like 2 years). I tried the popular trend of using concealer as an eyelid primer, and this primer still works 110% better.
7. Eyeshadow: I only ever use 3 shadows. They are all individual, matte singles in a custom quad. I cannot wear glitter/shimmer eyeshadows because my eyes are too sensitive :( They currently have a promo going on for a custom quad for $32. My own quad has lasted me 3 years, and I still haven’t finished 1 eyeshadow entirely. I wear the shade “Burnt Orange” matte every day. For special occasions, I will deepen with the shade “Blazing” and “Deep plum”.
8. Eyeliner: I hate how much I love this eyeliner but it is what it is :( It is my holy grail liner, and lasts all day & night. It glides on easily, with no tugging on your eyelids, and a little goes a long way. I stock up once a year and go through 1 pencil every 2-3 months with daily use. The shade I use is “Blacquer”.
9. Bronzer/contour: Baby face? No problem. I love this powder because it looks like a natural shadow on the hollow of your cheekbones. It hurt to take the plunge because the cost seems ridiculous for a powder, but I use this EVERY DAY. I have now had it for a full year and am still not done with it. This powder has a matte finish, with no shimmer. I have never broken out using this, and it does not need to be set to look flawless. My shade is “Medium”.
10. Blush: The longest lasting blush ever. The shades “Exposed” and “Paaarty” are my ride or die. They are both matte finish, with no shimmer or glitter. This is great for business/interviews. No breakouts on my sensitive skin.
11. Setting powder: My favorite face powder that mattes my skin without being cakey. I have been using this same product since I was 16 years old and have never change it because it’s that good for sensitive skin. Comes with its own puff in the compact. I’m in the shade “01 Stay Buff”.
12. Lipstick: I use this lip crayon in the shade “Calvados”. Perfect “my lips but better” with brown undertone. Creamy, doesn’t dry out your lips, and great for every day wear.
13. Gloss: I live for a glossy lip & my favorites are the one with the mint-like sensation. I love this gloss because it has a gorgeous rose undertone that is almost angelic. It also claims to have lip plumping properties, and although I don’t need more lip plumping, it may interest those who look for that in a product. It is sticky & not very long lasting, though, so I would not recommend for outside events. I use for special events & going out with friends because I love the color so much (Rosy Glow).
14. The only face brush I use: This dual-ended face brush is my favorite brush of all time. I love dual-ended brushes because I am so lazy and refuse to carry more than 2-3 brushes in order to fit all my makeup in 1 bag. It is on sale now (I bought mine full-priced so this is a steal!). I use 1 end for blush/contour, and the other end to powder.
15. Finishing powder: By far the most expensive makeup product I own and I value it greatly. I do not use this everyday, only for photos or special events because it gives you the most beautiful, ethereal “glow from within” look. I don’t use highlighter because it can be overwhelming and can enhance texture, but I love these powders in particular to give you a next-level, natural and appropriate glow.
16. Setting spray: My security blanket! I sometimes also get their matte-ifying version but to me, they’re both really similar. Will lock in your make-up for hours. I buy the full size to use on the regular, but loved the travel sizes to bring with me while interviewing/TSA compliance.
17. Makeup remover: Finally, to take it all off, I love this makeup remover. I loved it so much I even brought it with me during traveling. After a full day of make-up, I noticed my wipes and cleanser weren’t taking off the residue, causing me to breakout. I like this model because it doesn’t break the bank like their other versions. One charge can last me 2-3 weeks.
Tumblr media
Hope that was helpful! If you are interested in my skincare regimen, I am also happy to share in the near future. My skincare is incredibly affordable (90% of it is drug-store) and simple with few steps.
xx Anh
