Cranmore Somerset por Anthony Plowman Por Flickr: 5786 was built by the Great Western Railway in 1930 and, unlike many of its siblings, didnât get scrapped by British Railways, but was sold on to The London Transport Passenger Board. 5786 is one of over 800 57xx Pannier Tank locomotives built. They were used mainly for heavy shunting, short-distance goods and branch line passenger duties. Built at Swindon, 5786 entered service in January 1930 at Aberdare shed. 5786 remained in South Wales throughout its life with the GWR and BR(W). Its last depot was Cardiff Canton. In 1958 it was overhauled at Swindon and transferred to London Transport where it was painted Maroon and numbered L92. The next eleven years were spent working maintenance trains, goods traffic and shunting from Lille Bridge and Neasdon Depots.

I've had a waterbuck horn lying around since last year, and I've finally gotten round to drilling an aperture in the end to receive my Siem vd Veen cornetto mouthpiece. it comfortably blows a beautifully full and resonant Ab
the horn is only just 60cm in length which is apparently, luckily, the approximate length of a treble cornetto (oboes, flutes, tenor recorders are all approx. 65cm long), but of course, the horn bore is irregular and significantly more conical than a cornetto
now I've not yet dared to drill in any finger holes; I wouldn't know where to put them (although recorder maker Tim Cranmore has suggested that the size of the holes is more important than the placement, for flutes at least). so it's effectively got "all the finger holes covered" for testing purposes.
referring to the Monk instruments/Jeremy West fingering chart above, the pitches we want are G, Ab and A below the stave, Bb on the stave, F on the fifth line, and B⎠above the stave (I find this very irritating btw, that A overblows to B-flat overblows to B-natural. recorder and flute have trained me to expect octaves (this is also why I found clarinet so frustrating))
as mentioned, it does naturally sound a low Ab ! it's a little tricky to lip it up for the A, but I think that's just because I lack the technique and it should be doable with practice. lipping down to G sounds very bad. weak and hollow. maybe this is also down to technique ?
overblowing does get somewhere around an unstable A, we want Bb, so that's not too bad. and above that the F is pretty damn in tune and stable (though I lack the stamina to do it consistently). I have not been able to get anything higher than that. But I think the move now is to practice and get my lips trained before I start adding finger holes. otherwise I won't be tuning them properly and that would be silly

31. Who inspires you?
Everybody and many things inspire me. Â My problem at this age is my nearly impossible power to do anything about that inspiration. Â
In the Spring when I was 12 years old, I had my appendix removed which in those days meant ether as an anesthetic and a week in hospital.  I can still experience nausea at the very thought of ether.  However the experience of being cared for by nurses was likely an experience that impacted the rest of my life.  I was always allowed to remove wood splinters from my Dadâs hands when I was very little and not very adept.  I liked hearing my Dad call me his nurse but after my appendectomy the mold was cast.  My destiny was  determined.
At my 40th high school class reunion we all agreed without exception, that our favorite teacher was Miss Gillis.  She was a matronly woman of maybe 50 years who always had her hair done neatly.  She was an inspiration to all of us.  And she was certain we could all love Shakespeare and despite all evidence  to the contrary she was sure we could all go on to higher education.  She was right in  most cases.
When my granddaughter, Anne was in third grade she wrote a Greek play which in itself was quite remarkable. Â She called me one evening to ask if I could make her costumes as her play was going to be performed for her school. Â The play was two days hence. Â Luckily, both men and women of Greece at that time wore chitons. Â These were short robes tied at the waist with rope. Â That was easy enough. Â Anne was the narrator and had a crown and her motherâs jewelry. The play was a success and made the Newburyport newspaperâs front page. Â How could I not be inspired.
I lived on my farm in Warner for 22 years. Â It was a beautiful place tucked in a valley in the Mink Hills. It also had a swimming pool and my grandchildren spent time there with me during their summer vacation. Â On one such occasion they came pool ready. They were wearing their swimsuits andÂ
carrying colorful pieces of foam called noodles. Â I asked if they really held them above water or how many noodles would be needed to keep me afloat. Â Merton suggested I might need 17 noodles. Â Anne immediately came to my defense chiding Merton for implying I was heavier than I ought to be. Â I assured both that there was no harm done and it would be our secret. Â I could tell them I stuck to my diet by announcing I lost a noodle or two. Â My grandchildren have all inspired me to be a better person as each of them certainly are such.
My friend, David inspires me. Â He has a hereditary eye condition that never seemed to limit him. Â He graduated from Harvard and went on to Medical School. He is now chief of staff in Neuro Oncology in a very large teaching hospital. Â Years before when he was taking a gap year deciding to go into law or medicine, we worked together. Â One weekend we went up to Cranmore, NH to watch the US tennis open. Â We saw Michael Chang play. Â I donât know how much of the match David actually saw but it was a well spent and inspiring day. Â
It is my brother, Kip who inspires me to this day. Â He has been gone for more than 15 years now but remains vivid in my memory. Â We share the dubious distinction of having hereditary, congenital anomalies. Â He had Epsteinâs disease and was actually missing a large portion of his right atrium. Â i have a ventricular hypertrophy that inhibits the closing of the mitral valve. Â My problem was not diagnosed until I was in my 70âs. Â Kipâs was evident at birth and my parents were cautioned not to send him to school fearing it would be too taxing. Â He graduated from high school and went on to have a successful career with the Imperial Bank. Â I Â am now experiencing the shortness of breath that Kip knew from birth. Â I can now relate to the admission Kip made to me two months before he died. Â He without rancor, but as a matter of fact, said he did not wish to just be here taking up space and using up Oxygen. Â I now know of what he spoke. Â He will inspire me to the end.

Cranmore to the Rescue
Scheduled for yesterday was a one-on-one half-day mountaineering skills course. In this course we teach students the ins and out of using mountaineering crampons, from selecting them to sizing them, all the way to their simple but specific choreography using them with the ice axe in the more advanced pied français (as we call it), hybrid/international, and German/front pointing techniques. North Conway - Day 3
Sunday - 10/15
Today was mostly sunny with occasional clouds and periods of overcast. In the early evening we had periods of drizzle. The last couple of days have reminded me how unpredictable New Englandâs weather can be, changing quickly. I have gotten used to California weather and forgot how the weather is very different here.
When we checked into our hotel on Thursday, the receptionist asked if we wanted to schedule a time at the water park. I didnât know what she was talking about or how it made any sense given the forecasted highs of 50s for the week. After we finished breakfast this morning, we decided we were going to find out. Turns out our hotel has an indoor water park. I didnât know there was such a thing and it is the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel that had one. Hopefully they wonât automatically add an additional a resort fee as a result! Needless to say, we wonât be taking advantage of this amenity.
We then went and checked out the Lands End outlet store and the REI store in North Conway. Then it was back to searching for old covered bridges and fall foliage. Here are some highlights from our travels this morning.
Later we went to the grocery store to buy food for lunch and went for a three mile walk on the North Conway Recreation Path. It is a relatively new paved path specifically designed for walkers and bikers.
After lunch we went to the New England Ski Museum. They had a great 10 minute movie that had film clips of skiing in New England in 1930s and beyond.
The picture on the left below is a car from the Skimobile. The Skimobile was a unique ski lift system developed exclusively for Mount Cranmore in New Hampshire, and the design was quite different from traditional ski lifts. Each Skimobile car traveled up a raised trestle, pulled by an underside traction cable. MaryEllen used to ride one of these when she was a kid and got a chance to relive her childhood memories.
The picture on the right below is a âSnurfer,â which is a type of snowboard. The Snurfer is considered one of the early predecessors to the modern snowboard. Itâs a board designed for snow, and the user holds onto a rope attached to the front while riding down a snowy slope.
We also went to a craft fair and walked the main commercial area in North Conway. Here are a couple of more interesting pumpkin decorations we saw along the way.
By chance Rich and Debby, our friends from Moraga, along with Paula and Richard, former neighbors from Moraga now residing in New York, happened to plan their vacation in North Conway the same time as us. Weâd prearranged to meet, and the six of us enjoyed dinner together at Vito Marcelloâs Italian Bistro.
