Ok I have to get this off my chest even though I will have a longer post sometime next week about things I wanted to see but didn't in 6.8. But this just won't leave me alone. Exactly how many days was it between Baby T's birth and Babs' wedding? Two? The baby's arrival was dropped so abruptly and then suddenly Shelagh doesn't even look like she just gave birth a day or two before, kneeling in a dress with everyone giving him a bath while the sun blazes into the room, even though it appeared to be nearing dusk in the scene prior where Tom reveals the carousel to Barbara. Then suddenly the Turners have made it to the reception, with Shelagh wearing a new outfit that happens to fit her body 48-hour postpartum, and no one minds Baby T being out in the cold and snow. I know Barbara deserved her time in the spotlight seeing as it was her wedding and all, but THIS is why I needed to some mention of Baby T among the nurses the following day. So much was jam-packed into the brief time between the birth and the wedding, and it felt like it was forgotten that one of their colleagues and friends just had a baby. It could've been a quick 3 second line, for instance, Sister Julienne returning from a home visit the following morning as Phyllis and Val were unpacking the flowers and saying "The Turners are terribly sorry they won't be able to attend the ceremony tomorrow, but they send all their best wishes." Or while everyone was decorating the Cranemobile, Sister Winifred saying "What a joyous week it's been for Nonnatus House! First a baby and now a wedding!" What I really wish we had seen was Sister Monica Joan mentioning the baby, since she didn't have a single scene with Shelagh all season. A brief exchange between her and Sister Julienne, perhaps in the hall the next morning, where Sister MJ takes Sr J's hands and they joining in a quick prayer of thanksgiving for the baby's safe arrival. Because they knew Shelagh in a way no one else did, as their sister in Christ for a decade. Just *something* to acknowledge the birth back at Nonnatus. Chummy had a prayer circle and a darn blanket made for her the night she delivered FGS. And then to top the episode off, everyone is having fun on the carousel and Sister Julienne ended up alone on the steps, instead of walking over to see the baby. That's the problem with trying to cram in 2 major character storylines, plus 3 concurrent secondary storylines, into one episode. When the birth and wedding are both happening to main characters, rather than a patient, both stories really deserve enough time without side plots like hot flashes ( what? Who said that?) cutting into time that could've been spent on the main stories. And I honestly couldn't immerse myself into Barbara's wedding because it was too difficult to switch gears and wonder when they would cut to the next Turnadette scene. But, no, we just left them at home right after the birth. Ok, I promise my rant on this issue is over. I just had to get it all out once and for all! I'll rant about other things next week. Nah, not rant, just lament over a few missed opportunities.
