Moon 31, updates.
Trigger Warning: Animal death, fake blood.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coyotestar padded through CraneClan’s territory quietly, the constant tug of sorrow in his heart growing heavy as he passed the river, the place where Quickkit and Cicadacurrent had died. He dipped his head at the running water.
It had been twenty-four moons since Fringepaw’s death, and it still hung over Coyotestar like the moon - always watching, especially in the dark. Coyotestar had never felt so alone, in moments at his weakest, he’d thought he was the only cat left in the world.
When he’d caught whitecough, he’d had to hunt for himself whilst sick, and died quickly because of it. Sure, it was only one life, but it was still dying. He’d seen Fringepaw, and a little bit of him had flickered with hope, but that had extinguished eight moons later, when he’d been hit by a monster crossing the Thunderpath.
Two moons later, he was covered in healing scratches and cuts, paws sore and stomach aching with hunger. Coyotestar wasn’t used to living alone.
Maybe, he thought. Maybe I’m supposed to die alone.
Over, and over, and over.
His thoughts were interrupted by a pitiful mew, and he turned to sniff the air. Coyotestar’s eyes fell to the ground by a push, where a small ticked brown and cream kit lay, thinner than a twig. He rushed to examine the kit, his eyes meeting its beautiful grey ones, although they were dim and almost life-less.
Wordlessly, Coyotestar grabbed the kit by its scruff and rushed back to camp. He placed the kit down in the medicine cat den, before grabbing a squirrel from the fresh-kill pile and pushing it to the kit.
The small creature ate quickly, clearly starving.
“What’s your name?” Coyotestar asked gently, and the tom-kit looked up at him.
“Tempestkit,” he rasped weakly, coughing lightly at the end. Coyotestar flinched back from the noise, memories of Fringepaw doubled over with coughing bouts racing through his mind.
“Where’s your family?”
“They’re all dead,” Tempestkit hiccuped, and Coyotestar moved to curl up around the kit. He licked his ear fondly, soothing the overwhelmed tom-kit.
“Would you like to join my Clan, Tempestkit?” Coyotestar asked, a gleam of hope in his heart.
The small kit nodded immediately, and Coyotestar felt a surge of happiness roll over him.
Maybe, he could rebuild CraneClan.
Him, and Tempestkit.

This is 40 Answers to 40 Questions for L5R 4e
Kikita Mayoko
Character Creation 40 Questions
What Clad Does Your Character Belong To? Kakita Fujita Mayoko no Daiki is a part of the Crane Clan
What Family Does Your Character Belong To? She was raised in the Kakita Family Line with her parents. Mayoko’s Father is family name is Ueda, her mother’s family name is Akatsutsumi. Her husband’s last name is Fujita
Is Your Character A Bushi, A Shugenja, or A Courtier? Mayoko is a Courtier.
How Would Others Describe Your Character’s Appearance? Mayoko is a female of average height and weight. Her hair is dyed white and long, often tied up into stylish designs. She has a very attractive face that is a bit slender, with well proportion eyes (dark brown), ears and mouth, yet her nose is a bit on the small side with a weak bridge (not prominent). She has average length limbs, with narrow fingers that are a tad on the long side. Her skin is pale, and she appears to be one of those individuals who tries hard to stay out of the sun. Mayoko also has slightly long toes but her feet still are in the average range. She has a docile or shy demeanor most often. Her voice is a bit too soft and in nosier areas it is often hard to hear what she says, and in such times she seems to struggle a bit to speak in a louder tone. Her style of dress is impeccable, always seeming to be in the know of the highest of fashions and her application of perfume is almost like an art form in itself (always just enough of a sent, just a hint mixed in with her naturally pleasant odor. A small breasted woman, with narrow shoulders. She appears to be young, but carries herself like one of the more mature ladies of the court, with that air of confidence, some may refer too in her case as arrogance. Her movements appear to hypnotize many of the opposite sex, and it is apparent that she is well aware of her admires and knows how to be seductive enough to both maintain her dignity, while leaving many a woman envious as she seems to hold the attention of the men. No scars or other distinguishing features stand out, yet she has a small tattoo in the middle of her forehead, that her face actual pulls off admirably.
What is your character’s primary Motivation? Mayoko’s primary motivation is to serve her liege lord to the fullest of her capabilities as one of the up and coming courtiers of the age, she knows she is an important asset for her liege and family. Yet deep down inside she questions her motives at times as she is often worried about another “episode.” If she could but find a cure, she is unsure if she would betray all for alleviation.
Who is The Person Your Character Trust Most in the World. She trust Kakita Yoshi more than anyone she knows. She has looked up to his leadership and political influence since she completed her first day of training in the Doji Dojo. She would almost say that she loves him; but only to herself.
What is Your Character’s Greatest Strength and Weakness? Mayoko’s greatest strength is her ability to figure out what is going to happen before it even happens. It is a wisdom of putting things together almost like a puzzle of logic and reason when it comes to life. Mayoko’s greatest weakness is her vanity in her own abilities and independent thinking. She is not one to listen to the advice of others. While, it has cost her once or twice, she just usually knows better than most and trust herself more than any other.
What does Your Character Think About Bushido? Mayoko has taken to heart the importance of bushido from both of her parents. Their beliefs coincide with the typical Crane. To her the most important code is Courtesy, with Duty and Honor being the codes next in the chain of importance. While she feels Courage is important outside of the Courts, she is out of her element, and so worried of any additional episodes (which has happened more often when courage was involved), it is just best for her to avoid being in any situation that may require the drawing of steel.
What is Your Character’s Opinion of Her Clan? Mayoko feels she is privilege to have been fortunate enough to belong to the most important Clan within the Empire. It is their clan that truly brought civilization to the people of Rokugan. There are times and situations that she must stomach for the clan, but overall Mayoko just bares through those times. Karma is Karma, and there really is not reason to be ungrateful.
Is Your Character Married? Mayoko has been married for about two years to Fujita Daiki from the Doji family. It was arranged. Her husband is a distance cousin to the Emerald Champion. She did not know much about her husband, until after they were married. For Mayoko marriage is a duty, and when it comes to her husband and infant son, they are one of her priorities. While she wouldn’t say she “loves” her husband in the romantic sense, she thinks he is a wonderful samurai, husband and father. There home is within the Doji Provinces. Daiki and Mayoko both have proved to be great assets for their Daimyo. Six months ago, they were given a fief. Their home is located at Fyia sha - nogure - su mura. They live with her mother-in law Cho. Mayoko has a difficult time being in the house with this woman, while she is not happy at the distance her new assignment will place on her and her family, she is at least welcoming some time of peace away from her husband’s mother.
Does Your Character Have Any Prejudices? Like many, Mayoko biases have been heavily influence by individuals within her Clan. She really is put of by both the lion and the Crab, Don’t Trust the Scorpions (any further than she could throw one of them). She thinks members of the Phoenix Clan are trust worthy and admires their pacifistic philosophy. The Unicorn probably should not be samurai, and the emperor would do everyone a favor by sending them back from wince the came. She doesn’t really have an opinion of the Dragon Clan, but she has heard they are, sort of strange and intriguing. Minor Clans are barely above being Ronin and Ronin… well, maybe most can take a trip with the Unicorn, they mostly bandits and up to know good.
To whom Does Your Character Owe the Most Loyalty. Mayoko thinks that the Emerald Champion is top on her list, followed by Kakita Yoshi, and finally the Emperor. She is well aware how the order of loyalty should rank. Mayoko just does not voice these thoughts aloud to anyone and hopes she never has to be placed in a situation, where her loyalty between the Emperor and Emerald Champion are at odds.
What Are Your Character’s Favorite and Least Favorite Things? Mayoko loves to talk about interesting subjects and ideas to someone who also has an intellectual mind set. She has enjoyed mental stimulation when it comes to two or more individuals having great discussions. What she doesn’t like is having to be around individuals who talk about frivolous things and or isn’t that bright. She rather not talk at all, and many people think she is just not a very talkative type of person, not knowing she actually can be talkative, just not with any and everyone.
Does Your Character Have Any Recurring Mannerisms? Mayoko clinches her teeth when she is frustrated with someone. She tends not to notice this action. If attention is brought to her about this, like her parents do when they see it, she will close her eyes draw in a breath and release the tension from her face.
What About Your Character’s Emotions? Being a courtier Mayoko has pretty much mastered her “Face.” The emotion she has the most difficult time dealing with is fear, it is more from what can occur in such a state she is more concerned about. The emotion she has the easiest time controlling on the other hand is anger. Her sensei taught her meditative techniques for both emotions. She, has perfected the anger techniques, but the fear is a work in constant progress.
How Would Your Character Handle A subordinates Improper Behavior? Mayoko’s typically reaction to Improper Behavior by a subordinate is to correct address the problem immediately. She has no problem telling or showing someone proper behavior. She is more lenient with Heimin and Hinin, and less understanding with fellow samurai, who are supposed to know better.
How would Your Character’s Parents Describe Her? Both of Mayoko’s parents are still alive. They live near Kyuden Kakita. She had the typical childhood, and has great respect for both of her parents. Her father is nearing the age of retirement in a few years, she hopes they marry off her younger brother soon, so him and his wife can help take care of their mother once their father leaves.
What is Your Character’s Highest Ambition? Mayoko hopes that one day she will be able to have a regular assignment in the courts with Kakita Yoshi and in the presence of the emperor which would bring great honor on her and her family and perhaps greatly affect her son’s life in the future.
How Religious is Your Character? Mayoko considers herself to be just as religious as the average samurai. While she does not make frequent trips to the temple, she does make all the holidays and observes her ancestors and the fortunes when she can. Religion is an important aspect of her life.
How Will Your Character Die? Mayoko will die an an Emerald Magistrate when a group of bandits attack her entourage while traveling through the lands of the Lion. Her escorts will be killed as she helplessly watches. Then the bandits will kill her last.
Does Your Character Have An Ultimate Goal and If So What is it? Mayoko’s goal is to ensure her family’s line through her son. If their is anyone she loves it is her son. She hopes that he will one day inherit their fief and go on to live an Honorable life.
What Is Your Character’s Secret and What Will Happen If It Is Discovered? Mayoko’s only secret is that she had cheated on one of her last assignments as a student. She could not complete the lore project that was assigned, and had outside help. If it was ever discovered it would bring shame to her family, school and dojo. She felt so horrible, that after her gempukku, she began to take her profession seriously (she had been enjoying her popularity so much that it had greatly affected her studies, and she was almost sent home as a failure of the school). Because of her guilt, Mayoko has become one of the phenoms of her dojo’s class. Many have high hopes for her.
What Does Your Character Think of the Political Climate in Rokugan? Mayoko, loves the court and its accompanying intrigue. It is almost like a game, one of the greatest games and she loves the competition.
What Does Your Character Do To Relax? Mayoko loves to music and listening to music since she was a child was one of her favorite past times. She learned how to play the Biwa while in school. Mayoko loves to play the Biwa (usually to herself as a form of relaxation.
If Your Character was give a Koku How Would She Spend It? So long as all of her responsibilities where taken care of, Mayoko would have a servant purchase more accessories and perfumes for her.
Does Your Character Have A Stereotypical View of the Classes Beneath Her? Mayoko thinks the lower classes serve a purpose, and that is to do their job well and provide. Samurai’s have their duty and so do the lesser classes. Of all the classes, Mayoko is not a fan of peasant merchants. She knows they are a necessary evil, but she prefers to keep her distance.
What Are the Names of Your Parents and Siblings and what do they do? Family Name is Ueda of the Kakita family. Her Father’s name is Takeshi(38)He is a Kakita Bushi, her mother Akiyama runs her home(37). Her borther’s name is Kira Bushi (16).
What Reward Would Your Character Most Wish to Receive? Mayoko would love to work as a courtier for her clan in the Imperial Court.
What Does Your Katana and Saya Look Like? Mayoko does not have a Katana, but she does have a wakizashi. The Scabbare and hilt is made of bamboo, it is itched with lotus flowers on lily pads all around it. The design looks like someone took painstaiking efforts to sculpt the covering and handle. The actual blade looks like a typical blade, but on both sides their has been a Reed itched into the blade. Her wakizashi belonged to her mother’s father once a courtier himself. His Name Kira.
Does Your Character Revere the Tao of Shinsei or the Fortunes More? Mayoko reverse the Fortunes slightly more than the Tao.
What is Your Character’s Most Sacred Possession? She has a tea set that once belonged to Kakita Yoshi’s mother. She was given it after winning in a Poetry contest held at Kyuden Seppun.

CHAPTER FOUR
CHAPTER CW: HEAVILY implied death, mentions of blood
“Tuniapaw!! ‘Tuniapaw!”
Petuniapaw purred as they pushed into Amber’s den. Maple and Briar, who had been play-fighting when they arrived, stopped in their tracks and darted towards the pale-colored tom.
Petuniapaw gave both kits gentle nuzzles and licks on their heads, before looking around the den. They quickly noticed something wrong. Very wrong.
“Where’s your mother?” They asked, looking down at the kits.
“Las’ night she left!” Maple squeaked, frowning and shifting her paws. “Heard real, real loud noises!”
“Mama said ‘ts a dog…” Briar mumbled, looking down at the frosty ground. “I miss her lots…”
“Me too…”
Petuniapaw stiffened. Loud noises, a dog, and the fact that Amber still wasn’t back yet…Things didn’t look good.
“Stay.” They instructed the kits, backing out of Amber’s den and beginning to rush through the grass.
Amber’s scent was faint, beginning to grow stale. However, the awful scent of dog filled the apprentice’s nose, and that just made them more fearful.
They padded through the territory with caution. At one point, they smelled a cat, but it wasn’t Amber. It must’ve been a passing loner.
They were going to give up, when suddenly they smelled something new that made their ears perk.
Blood.
This wasn’t like the first time, when Amber had a mere scratch on her leg. This scent was strong. Strong enough to make Petuniapaw lightheaded.
They pushed through a tall patch of grass, hoping to find Amber. Even finding her body would be enough. At least they’d be able to conclude their search with answers.
Instead, they found nothing but an already fading patch of blood, with a trail of crimson that led further into the grass.
Trembling and holding back a sob, Petuniapaw retraced their steps. Their tail dragged along the ground as they solemnly made their way to Amber’s den.
Maple and Briar eagerly greeted them.
“Tuniapaw! Did you find Mama?” Maple asked, expression hopeful.
Petuniapaw forced a smile. “I, um…No. I’m sorry, I didn’t. Listen…Why don’t you two come with me?” They offered. “We’re going to where I live! Um…Until your mother comes back.”
“Yay! We’re going with ‘Tuniapaw!” Briar exclaimed, waddling over to the older apprentice and flopping at their paws.
“Yep…” Petuniapaw’s stomach sank. They dipped their head and grabbed the black and white kit by her scruff, gesturing for Maple to follow. “Can you walk?” They asked, voice muffled.
Maple nodded, puffing out her little chest as she took wobbly steps behind Petuniapaw. “Not even cold!” She stated.
Nodding, Petuniapaw began to walk. They kept their steps slow so that Maple could keep up. Briar curled in their jaws, shivering.
Their mind was racing with thoughts, and they felt a cluster of emotions that twisted their stomach. They were grieving for Amber, who they had considered a friend over the past moon. They were worried about the kits, and how the clan would react.
What would Blossomstar think?
What would Lilyeye think?
What would their mother think?
The thought of facing Rosewing made Petuniapaw shudder.
If only I were Dahliapaw, They thought. Then Mama wouldn’t care what I did.
They were so lost in their thoughts that they didn’t even notice they were on top of the small hill above CraneClan’s camp entrance. The waterfall had frozen over, leaving a frozen pool of water in the middle of camp. Petuniapaw could see cats milling around, sharing tongues, and using whatever rays of sun they could to bask.
“Is this your home? That’s a lotta cats!” Maple whispered, peering over the ledge with a gasp. “Whoa, it’s bigger than Mama’s home!”
“It is,” Petuniapaw whispered back, lowering Briar to the ground. The kit whined, nuzzling closer to their pale fur. “Now listen. If you two want to stay here you have to be very good and stay quiet. Don’t speak until I tell you to.”
“Are there other kits here to play with?” Maple questioned.
Petuniapaw sucked in a deep breath. “No.”
“Okay.”
“Now, let’s go…”
The three padded into camp. Petuniapaw tried to appear confident.
The first cat to notice the group was Hazelcrest. She peered at them with a confused expression, before leaning over to Pinebreeze and whispering into his ear. The tom lifted his head, fur ruffled from a good nap, and when he noticed the kits his eyes widened.
Petuniapaw could hear their clanmates murmuring around them as they sat in front of the TallHill. Eventually, the commotion seemed to drive Blossomstar from her den, and she emerged with a yawn.
“What’s going on now?” The leader grumbled, freezing mid-step when she saw the kits. “Petuniapaw, what…Explain, please.”
Petuniapaw’s gaze lowered, and they suddenly found the ground very interesting. “I found these kits abandoned in the territory. It’s against the warrior code to leave them to freeze, so I figured I’d bring them here.”
Blossomstar’s eyes narrowed. “Hm. It’s the middle of leaf-bare, and we barely have enough prey to feed ourselves…Why should I allow more mouths to feed?” She asked.
Petuniapaw looked around nervously. They locked eyes with Rosewing, who was in the small crowd, and silently begged for some kind of defense.
Please, Mama. They were thinking. Help me like you would help Dahliapaw.
Rosewing was silent. Treewhisker stepped forward.
“Blossomstar, with all due respect, you’re tired. I think your exhaustion has clouded your judgement,” He meowed. “Our clan is lacking in cats. We haven’t had new kits since Rosewing’s kits were apprenticed, and our numbers haven’t gotten any bigger. Our fresh-kill pile is full enough for two more. Besides…”
He gave Petuniapaw a gentle smile, before looking back at the leader. “Like Petuniapaw said, it’s against the code to turn away kits in need.”
Blossomstar sighed heavily, sitting and neatly wrapping her tail around her paws. “Very well. But I do have one question…Who will raise these kits? I refuse to give an apprentice the title of ‘parent’.”
Again, the clearing fell silent, before Lilyeye stepped forward with a gentle smile.
“I suppose it’s a good time to make this announcement,” She said with a chuckle. “I’m expecting kits. They should be arriving either at the end of leaf-bare or the beginning of newleaf.”
Shocked gasps, murmurs, and congratulations rippled through the camp, while Treewhisker whipped his head to face the she-cat with wide eyes.
“What? Kits? Whose kits?” He exclaimed. “Mine?”
“Who else, silly?” Lilyeye purred, stepping forward to nudge her mate’s shoulder.
Blossomstar raised her tail, signaling for the clan to fall silent.
“Congratulations, Lilyeye,” She meowed. “I take it to mean you’ll raise these kits? What about your deputy duties?”
Lilyeye shook her head. “I can be a mother and serve my clan at the same time.”
“Alright,” Blossomstar sighed. “Very well, Petuniapaw. The kits may stay.”
Petuniapaw’s body filled with relief, and they gave Lilyeye a grateful glance before looking back at Blossomstar.
“Thank you, Blossomstar.” They meowed. “May I name them?”
“I’m not stopping you.”
The apprentice looked down at the kits. Maple and Briar looked up at them, smiling innocently. They sighed, and smiled back.
“Their names are Maplekit and Briarkit. It just feels fitting.”

the forest fire - moon 0.
Coyoteheart let out a howl of horror as the heat from the fire engulfed him. He glanced around the camp, searching for the kits. Through the flames, he spotted a silver she-kit with pale green eyes, and he leaped towards Quickkit. Without a word, he picked her up by her scruff and darted out of the burning camp, through the forest and to the stream.
Quickkit let out a whine as he placed her on the sand, before racing back to camp.
The forest around him was ablaze, lit with orange fire that roared as he ran.
“Chervilstar?!” He cried out in panic, searching for the cream leader. The tom in question appeared by his side, supporting the deputy Ficklefall with his shoulder.
“Get the rest of the cats and go,” Chervilstar ordered grimly, practically dragging the deputy out of camp. Coyoteheart caught a glimpse of the huge, angry burns covering the deputy’s back legs.
“I left Quickkit by the stream,” Coyoteheart told him before racing back into the camp. A cry of pain rang through the air and the tom turned to see the dark grey she-cat Ambershade stuck underneath a burning branch. He raced to her side, grabbing onto the unburnt end of the branch.
The Clan’s mediator Cicadacurrent stumbled to Coyoteheart’s side, helping him drag the branch off of Ambershade. “Leave!” Ambershade cried out, yelping as her tail caught on fire. She wreathed in the ash and fire desperately. “Get out, while you can!”
Coyoteheart turned to Cicadacurrent before they hurried out of camp. At the entrance, Whistleshade was stood, kneading the ground with his paws anxiously. “I can’t find Parsleytooth, Darkdapple or Fringekit!”
Coyoteheart looked around frantically. “I’ll go look-”
“No you won’t!” Whistleshade cried out. “We’re going to get out of here, now!”
The trio wordlessly raced away from the camp, guilt pumping through Coyoteheart’s body as he thought of Ambershade burning alive and the other three cats who’s location they didn’t even know.
Before they could reach the stream, Whistleshade - who was the slowest runner - let out a cry of pain. The other two cats turned to see him crushed beneath another burning branch. They watched helplessly as his fur instantly caught fire, tufts of darkened fur scattering the ground.
Cicadacurrent nudged Coyoteheart so he kept running as they raced back to the stream.
Chervilstar and Quickkit were sat beside Ficklefall, who was lying on the floor. One quick look at the deputy’s body, and Coyoteheart could tell they’d lost another member.
Suddenly, Quickkit cried out. The other CraneClan members turned to see Parsleytooth limping through the burning foliage, a motionless Fringekit dangling from her jaws. She collapsed before letting out a shriek as the tree ahead of her collapsed, surrounding her in fire.
“Fringekit!” Quickkit screeched and Coyoteheart watched helplessly as both Cicadacurrent and Chervilstar rushed to help the she-cat and kit. Cicadacurrent jumped over a branch and grasped Fringekit in her mouth, rushing back to Coyoteheart’s side.
She dropped the kit before yelping, turning to reveal her burning side. Coyoteheart nudged her into the water and she slipped.
Chervilstar had his teeth fastened on Parsleytooth’s scruff, attempting to drag her out of the fire. But that was when another tree fell, crushing both cats.
The two kits beside him squealed as Coyoteheart moved to shield their view. He caught Cicadacurren’ts gaze.
The next day, Coyoteheart awoke from his place by the stream and uncurled to examine both Fringekit and Quickkit. His heart stopped when he felt Quickkit’s body, frightfully and deathly cold.
She was dead.
“Cicadacurrent?” The tom whispered, turning to the calico she-cat. She’d been coughing all night, and her side was burnt. Now, she was quiet. “Cicadacurrent?”
He nudged the she-cat, only to feel no movement.
Coyoteheart let out a wail of grief, curling up around Fringekit protectively.
The fire hadn’t covered the entire territory, in fact, it had barely covered any.
But it had taken all of the warrior and kit’s Clanmates from them.
Coyoteheart hunted the next chance he got, and then returned to the old camp. There, he found Darkdapple and Ambershade’s bodies.
He dragged all of his Clanmates bodies to the green side of their territory, where Fringekit was resting.
“Coyoteheart?” The kit mewed and he turned to look at the little tom. “Is it just us?”
“Just us,” Coyoteheart confirmed, licking the top of the kit’s head sorrowfully. “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
“But what about our camp?”
“We’re going to set up a new camp in the old grotto,” Coyoteheart told him. “That way we’ll be safe.”
And so the kit and warrior set off, determined to make a life for themselves.

CHAPTER TWO
CHAPTER CW: Young pregnancy, mild blood
Petuniapaw’s steps were careful. They slunk through the tall grasses of the riverlands, trying to keep their body low to the ground. The only sound around them was the sound of their own heart beating in their chest, and the shrill cry of cicadas near the water. It was a bit chilly, and the apprentice’s body shivered. Leaf-bare would come soon.
The scent they had picked up matched that of the cat they had met the day prior, with Dahliapaw. Their pelt bristled slightly as they remembered how afraid the she-cat looked, the sadness on her face as she ran away, and just how harsh Dahliapaw had been towards her.
They knew they didn’t have permission to be out, especially not so late. But they also knew that they longed to find this mysterious she-cat, and make things right with her.
The smell was growing stronger, combined with two new scents that made Petuniapaw freeze. The first was a sweeter smell, a smell they recognized from their days in the nursery as the scent of milk. The second smell, however, almost made them gag. It was metallic and sour, the smell of blood.
Pawsteps quickening, Petuniapaw began to run, following the strange combination of scents until they stumbled upon a den made from a bush. There, huddled inside, was the same she-cat from before.
A nest had been hastily created for the young, shivering molly to lay on. She looked up at Petuniapaw with wide, frightened green eyes, her fur matted and mildly dampened with sweat. The scent of blood Petuniapaw smelled before came from a deep cut in her right hind leg, the ground below it stained with a dark crimson.
The final thing Petuniapaw noticed was the two young kits huddled at her belly. They were less than a moon old. In fact, they were probably mere days old based on their appearance. One of the kits was a tortoiseshell like their mother, with white markings. The second kit was black, also with white markings.
This confused Petuniapaw. The she-cat was young. She appeared to be the age of a young warrior, and definitely far too young to be responsible for the lives of others.
“Oh, please, spare me!” The she-cat pleaded, visibly tensing as if preparing to run away. “I recognize you from yesterday! Please, I can’t leave! I’m too weak to carry these kits…”
“No, it’s okay,” Petuniapaw replied. They looked around, making sure no-cat was around before turning their attention back to the queen. “Are you okay? What happened to your leg?”
“Oh…I hurt myself running away from you and your friend…” The she-cat looked down at her front paws, curling her tail to both protect her kits and cover her injury.
“I’m sorry. My brother…He isn’t the nicest cat to stumble upon.” Petuniapaw sighed heavily, their shoulders sagging a bit. “Do you need help? What’s your name?”
“Amber.”
“Amber…Well, maybe you can come back with me! I’m sure Blossomstar wouldn’t turn away a mother with kits-”
“No.” Amber’s whiskers twitched, and she tensed her body further. “I appreciate the offer, truly, but…I would rather build my strength and leave with my kits. I don’t want to be a burden to you or your group.”
“Can I at least help you? We have enough herbs and prey to spare!” Petuniapaw let the words spill out of their mouth. They knew that they should just leave Amber alone, turn around and walk away, but the sight of her looking so sad and hurt tore at their heart.
Amber was silent. She laid her head down between her front paws, sighing heavily before responding. “Do what you please.”
Petuniapaw nodded. “O-okay! Hang on, I’ll be back!”
They scrambled back, turning and rushing away from the bush. They stalked back into CraneClan camp, trying to keep their pawsteps silent-
“Petuniapaw?”
Fox-dung! Petuniapaw froze and looked around camp until they met eyes with Lilyeye. The deputy was staring at them with her head tilted, sitting outside of the warrior’s den. Her tail was tucked around her paws neatly.
Petuniapaw padded over to Lilyeye, looking up at their mentor. “Sorry. I was going to the dirtplace…I woke up with the worst stomach ache...” They lied.
Lilyeye’s eyes narrowed, and the tip of her tail twitched. “Hmm. You should see Tallsky and Orchidpaw, then.” She stated.
“I will, if it doesn’t go away before patrols.” Petuniapaw meowed.
“Alright.” Lilyeye chuckled, leaning down and nudging the apprentice’s cheek with her nose. “I hope you’re not trying to get out of your little punishment!”
Petuniapaw laughed, shuffling closer to the gray and white she-cat with a purr. “I promise I’m not. That’s something Dahliapaw would do.”
Lilyeye sighed, wrapping her tail around Petuniapaw. “I’m aware. I hope that he changes soon. He has so much potential, and I would hate for it to be wasted on a…Useless cat.”
“It’s my mom’s fault.” Petuniapaw blurted out, before looking away with a frown. “Um..I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that-”
“No, I agree.” Lilyeye shook her head, before standing and turning to leave. “Both of us better get rest the best we can. Oh, and Petuniapaw?”
Petuniapaw, who was already walking away, turned to face Lilyeye. “Yeah?”
The deputy smirked, before slipping into the warrior’s den.
“Bring her cobweb, horsetail, and borage.”
(A/N: A bit of a shorter chapter, but things should pick up soon!)

CHAPTER ONE
CW: PARENTAL VERBAL ABUSE, CHILD NEGLECT(?)
“Y’know, we could really get in trouble for this.”
Dahliapaw looked back at his littermate. Petuniapaw stood behind him, their tail trailing behind their body.
He couldn’t help but scoff. “We’re eight moons old, Petunia! I know the territory like the back of my paw by now! In fact, when we get back, Blossomstar will wanna make me a warrior!”
“Mm,” Petuniapaw shook their head. “I think you’re being mouse-brained.”
“And went you’re following me around like a lost kit!” Dahliapaw grinned, continuing to pad along the river. A feeling of triumph could be felt as he heard Petuniapaw’s resigned sigh and pawsteps behind him.
The air around the apprentices carried an earthy, slightly musky scent that filled Dahliapaw’s nostrils and made him wrinkle his nose. Even as a kit he despised the water. He always envied how the other clans had gorgeous forest territories, while CraneClan was stuck with the rivers and fish. How he longed to climb trees, to catch mice…
It’s alright, He thought to himself. One day I’ll be Dahliastar, and I’ll take over the clans! All of the forests and trees will be mine!
“Dahliapaw?”
Dahliapaw snapped out of his thoughts with a brisk shake of his head, turning to Petuniapaw. They were staring forward, eyes wide.
“What? What are you looking at?” Dahliapaw huffed, mildly annoyed that his stream of thoughts had been ruined.
“Who…Who is that?”
Intrigued, Dahliapaw followed Petuniapaw’s gaze.
His sibling was looking at a young she-cat, who seemed to be searching for something along the edge of the river. Her fur was brown, with mottled markings. Her chest, belly, paws, and tail-tip were white, and her eyes were yellow.
Growling, Dahliapaw stalked forward, lashing his tail. “Hey! Who are you!? This is CraneClan territory!” He hissed.
The she-cat looked up, eyes widened. She began to take slow pawsteps backwards, trembling, her ears flattened.
“I’m sorry! I was just…”
“Leave now, or else!” Dahliapaw hissed, and the she-cat scrambled away.
Petuniapaw shuffled over to their brother, looking up with a saddened expression. “Dahliapaw, she seemed harmless…You scared her!”
“Ugh, you should’ve become a medicine cat instead of Orchidpaw!” Dahliapaw groaned, glaring down at Petuniapaw with an irritated twitch of his whiskers. “We didn’t know who that was! She wasn’t a clan cat, she could’ve been plotting an attack! You never know!”
Lifting his nose in the air, the cream tom turned and started to make his way back to CraneClan’s camp. “Now, I can’t wait to tell our mentors and Blossomstar about how I chased off a rogue all by myself! They’re gonna be so proud!”
…
Blossomstar glared down at Dahliapaw from the TallHill, the tip of her tail lashing in irritation.
“Let me get this straight, Dahliapaw,” The she-cat meowed. “Not only did you and your sibling leave camp without warning, but you also chased off and scared a cat without asking what her business was in the territory?”
Dahliapaw frowned, lowering his head. Shame burned through his pelt.
“Yes,” He mumbled after a pause, looking back up at the calico she-cat. “But Blossomstar, I thought-”
“Dahliapaw, I appreciate that you were trying to help the clan.” Blossomstar interrupted. “But what you did was dangerous, and you dragged your sibling into it! What if this rogue…If they were even a rogue at all, which I doubt…Was part of a group? You two could’ve been ambushed! Torn to pieces! And none of us would know what happened!”
“Blossomstar, if I may,” Rosewing, mother of Dahliapaw and Petuniapaw, stepped forward from the small group of gathered cats. “Dahliapaw was just doing what he thought was right!”
“Did I not mention that already?”
“Of course, you did, but…He’s just an apprentice! He barely knows any better!” Rosewing insisted, sitting beside her son and curling a tail around him protectively.
Petuniapaw scooted away. Dahliapaw shot Rosewing a grateful glance before turning back to the leader.
Blossomstar sighed heavily, shaking her head. “Great StarClan…” She murmured, before looking into Rosewing’s eyes.
“Rosewing, I’m going to say this as gently as possible.” She began. “He won’t be young forever!”
“But-”
“No ‘buts’. You’ve tried to pull this trick ever since he was in the nursery. ‘Oh, Blossomstar! He’s just a kit!’, ‘He doesn’t know any better!’...It’s infuriating, to say the least.” Blossomstar rolled her eyes. “At this rate, you’re not doing anything but raising a spoiled, entitled cat who runs to mommy for protection whenever he does something wrong!”
Dahliapaw glared up at Blossomstar. He could feel Rosewing’s fur burning with either embarrassment or rage…Possibly both. He felt just as angry. How dare Blossomstar speak to his mother that way!
Her tail curled more around the apprentice’s body, and she let out a huff. “It’s not my fault you clearly have a preference for Orchidpaw and Petuniapaw!” She exclaimed.
“And it’s not my fault you have a preference against them.” Blossomstar meowed, a cold sadness in her tone as she stood. “This clan meeting is dismissed. Because they both left camp without permission, Petuniapaw and Dahliapaw will both be the first picks in dawn patrols for the next quarter moon. That is all.”
Cats began to disperse, and Dahliapaw watched as Rosewing turned her attention to Petuniapaw, giving the young cat a glare that made them shrink down to the ground in fear.
“You!” She hissed. “Why didn’t you stop Dahliapaw if you knew he was doing something wrong!? You could’ve prevented this!”
“I…” Petuniapaw looked at Dahliapaw, silently pleading for help.
Dahliapaw looked away.
“Well? Hurry up and answer, mouse-brain!” Rosewing snapped, making Petuniapaw flinch.
“I tried, but…He didn’t listen to me…I’m sorry, mama, I’m sorry-”
“Enough! Because of you, Dahliapaw is in trouble!” Rosewing turned away, her gaze softening as she padded over to Dahliapaw. She sat down, purring as she began to groom his fur. “You poor thing, you’re all fluffed up…My baby…”
Dahliapaw tried to ignore it, but he could feel Petuniapaw’s eyes glaring at him from their spot. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see them pick themself up from the ground and slink away, towards their father Owlspring.
A little voice deep inside of him told him to follow his littermate.
He didn’t listen, and instead leaned deeper into Rosewing’s warmth.
