5 Construction Trends To Watch Out For In The Future
Technology and digitalization have transformed our world, and it’s about time the construction industry became smart.
We’ve definitely come a long way from the days of manual calculations and hand-drawn designs, but construction practices are still falling behind when it comes to adopting technological innovations.
Though, things are slowly changing.
In 2017, designers realized the true potential of AR/VR and 5D Macro BIM, which have already made the design process much more efficient and cost-effective.
Over the next 12 months, we foresee these technologies coming into more common use, and the introduction of new, advanced innovations like robotics and 3D printing!
With that in mind, here are our top 3 smart trends to look forward to for the UAE construction industry in 2018!
1. 3D Printing
When 3D printers were first introduced to the world, no one could have predicted that these small, fun-to-use devices would one day construct entire houses in a matter of hours!
Engineering consultants in UAE started experimenting with the limitless potential of 3D printing in the past few months, and are now building and installing entire HVAC ducts and piping systems in a quarter of the time it took them previously.
As the technology advances and better devices come out, you can rest assured we’re going to see these devices take over the entire construction process from manual labor.
People in China have already started living in 3D printed concrete residential blocks, and it won’t be long till this trend hits the UAE!
2. Advanced Drones
Drones have been around for a while, being used for all kinds of recreational purposes like videography, but we may finally see their true commercial potential come to light next year!
New, advanced drones are being fitted with spatial sensors and infrared cameras to map entire structures and improve a building’s flow of heat. This means that future construction is going to be a lot more energy-efficient and detailed!
Contractors are also using these handy devices to monitor site work, identify problems in hard-to-reach places, and to create video walk-throughs of completed floors to show to their clients.
Researchers are estimating that the commercial drone industry will grow by 10 billion dollars in the next decade, and this is a technology you won’t want to miss out on!
3. Internet of Things (IoT)
Another innovative tech field in which the construction industry has been slow to catch up, IoT has revolutionized the way people view the interactivity and connections between their smart devices.
The world is more connected than it has ever been thanks to the internet, and we finally see the commercial benefits of a smart construction industry.
Big names like the JPW consulting group have started using on-site wearable technology like tech-enhanced safety vests, smartwatches, and health trackers, drastically improving worker safety.
We’re also seeing a lot more innovation in on-site vehicles. New dumper trucks and cranes are coming fitted with sensors that constantly monitor fuel and fluid levels, equipment temperatures, hourly usage, and much more.
This information is relayed back to a central station, where managers can take preemptive action in case a vehicle is about to break down.
4. 3D and 5D BIM modeling
3D BIM allows design firms to create and manage virtual three- dimensional models of their projects.
These models are used for everything from planning the layouts of MEP fixtures and devices, to helping clients visualize their projects from the ground up. 3D BIM, however, has always had its own limitations: cost and material needs still have to be calculated manually.
All of that has changed with the introduction of 5D BIM!
In addition to model generation, the new technology is capable of automatically generating cost and material needs, meaning engineering consultants can now provide clients with far more accurate estimates!
It also means users will be able to show clients in real-time how changes to materials, design elements, and layouts will affect the appearance of the building, the construction schedule, and total costs.
5. Modular and offsite construction
The practice of modular construction, or prefab, isn’t anything new for the construction industry, but experts are predicting that this trend will fully take off in the coming 12 months!
Essentially, certain components of the design are prefabricated offsite under controlled conditions (like in a factory) and then added to the structure as a whole during the construction process.
The biggest benefit of this is that elements like structural beams, architectural features, and MEP systems can be manufactured for increased quality at lower costs since they’re not being handled by the on-site labor.
It also saves a ton of time! Offsite activities can proceed alongside onsite work, and the prefabricated elements will only need to be installed once construction reaches the relevant stage.
According to the Modular Building Institute, the market share for modular construction is expected to double by 2020!
