Rosehill Mausoleum, Chicago
The mausoleum features a rotunda with relief panels of the four seasons by Leon Hermant, sculptor

Background:
Rosehill Cemetery, in northwest Chicago, is the city's largest and oldest cemetery, dating back to 1859, and contains at least 200,000 grave sites in a 350-acre garden setting.
Dedicated in 1914, the cemetery's Rosehill Mausoleum was designed by architect Sidney Lovell, who is interred within. The interior is almost entirely of marble, with the floors composed of Italian Carrara marble. Several later additions would be made to the building; there were six additions made after 1913, and a final one in 1975.
Leon Hermant (1866–1936) was an American sculptor best known for his architectural sculpture. Hermant was born in France, educated in Europe and came to America in 1904 to work on the French Pavilion at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri.
For most of his career he was based in Chicago, working mostly in the American midwest, and frequently with a partner Carl Beil.
From 1904, when they met in St. Louis, until 1927, Hermant and Beil were partners at their Sculpture Studio at 21 East Pearson Street in Chicago.  Leon was the Artist, Carl, the "Executioner."  Hermant continued his art after Beil's death in 1927, receiving a major commission for the Indiana State Library in 1934. Hermant exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1920s, and would complete many sculptures throughout the U.S. [Chicago Sculpture in the Loop]
In 1928 Hermant was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French government for his Louis Pasteur Monument in Grant Park, Chicago.

In the 1929 Fourth Addition to Rosehill Mausoleum, a marble rotunda features relief panels of the four seasons executed by Hermant, placed between engaged marble columns. Each panel contains a brief quote below, appropriate to the season. Leon Hermant's signature appears on the bottom right of only one panel, Winter.
The yellowish lighting within the rotunda is so dim that photography is difficult, and one strains to appreciate the quality of the sculptures. I'd admired these panels before, but it was thanks to some thorough research by Jim Craig of Under Every Tombstone that I was alerted to their sculptor's identity.

SPRING
Hail bounteous May, that dost inspire
Mirth, and youth and warm desire
Hill and dale dost boast thy blessing
This we salute thee with our early song
and welcome and wishe thee long.

SUMMER
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
…So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

AUTUMN
There is no death! The stars go down
To rise upon some other shore.
And bright in heaven's jeweled crown
They shine for evermore.
…For all the universe is life…
There are no dead."

WINTER
When once our heavenly souls shall climb
Then all earthly grossness quit.
Attired with stars we shall forever sit
Triumphing over death and change and thee
O time!

Hey Marley, it'd be cool if you would drop a list of the masculinity in film books you're reading. No pressure tho!
Oh yeah for sure, lol sorry I have a tendency to default to vagueness when I'm talking about anything outside of fandom.
There's a lot, I went on a spree for a few weeks lol, so this is under a cut
Only one I've read cover to cover so far is Armed Forces: Masculinity and Sexuality in the American War Film - Robert Eberwein which was both interesting and frustrating in that a lot of it was (mildly defensively lol, as a response to a lot of queer film theory) explaining how a lot of homoerotic shit isn't intended to be interpreted as actually gay, but I'm glad I read it because I was specifically trying to understand how contemporary audiences viewed homoerotic shit.
Books I've read at least a chapter of:
Men, Masculinity, and the Media - Steve Craig
Running Scared: Masculinity and the Representation of the Male Body - Peter Lehman
Masculinity: Bodies, Movies, Culture - Peter Lehman
Masculinity and Popular Television - Rebecca Feasey
Buffoon Men: Classic Hollywood Comedians and Queered Masculinity - Scott Balcerzak
Shadows of Doubt: Negotiations of Masculinity in American Genre Films - Barry Keith Grant
Screening the Male: Exploring Masculinities in Hollywood Cinema - Steven Cohan
Laughing Matters: Understanding Film, Television, and Radio Comedy - John Mundy, Glyn White
Laughing Hysterically: American Screen Comedy of the 1950s - Ed Sikov (highly recommend just for the essay on Some Like It Hot)
What Made Pistachio Nuts?: Early Sound Comedy and the Vaudeville Aesthetic - Henry Jenkins
also shoutout to this article
Books I've obtained but haven't looked through yet:
American Cinema of the 1970s: Themes and Variations - Lester D. Friedman
Hollywood Androgyny - Rebecca Bell-Metereau
The New Hollywood: What the Movies Did With the New Freedom of the Seventies - James Bernardoni
Manhood in Hollywood: From Bush to Bush - David Greven
Girls Will Be Boys: Crossdressed Women, Lesbians, and American Cinema - Laura Horak
Hard Bodies: Hollywood Masculinity in the Regan Era - Susan Jeffords
The Remasculinization of America: Gender and the Vietnam War - Susan Jeffords (I've actually read the first Jeffords in uni and parts of the second but they're pretty psychoanalytical so ymmv)
Deviant Eyes, Deviant Bodies: Sexual Re-orientations in Film and Video - Chris Straayer
Masculinity in Fiction and Film: Representing Men in Popular Cultures 1945-2000 - Brian Baker
Masculinity in the Contemporary Romantic Comedy - John Alberti
Out in Culture: Gay, Lesbian and Queer Essays on Popular Culture - Corey K. Creekmur, Alexander Doty
Flaming Classics: Queering the Film Canon - Alexander Doty
Making Things Perfectly Queer: Interpreting Mass Culture - Alexander Doty
Vested Interests: Crossdressing and Cultual Anxiety - Marjorie Garber
Queer Images: A History of Gay and Lesbian Film in America - Harry M. Benshoff
Ghost Faces: Hollywood and Post-Millennial Masculinity - David Greven
Ethereal Queer: Television, Historicity, Desire - Amy Villarejo
Gender Terrains in African Cinema - Dominica Dipio
Masculinity and Monstrosity in Contemporary Hollywood Films - Kirk Combe and Brenda Boyle
Open Secret: Gay Hollywood 1928-1998 - David Ehrenstein
Screened Out: Playing Gay in Hollywood From Edison to Stonewall - Richard Barrios
Hollywood from Vietnam to Regan - Robin Wood
In a Lonely Street: Film Noir, Genre, Masculinity - Frank Krutnik
Unamerican Hollywood: Politics and Film in the Blacklist Era - Frank Krutnik and others

RKO Radio Picture's Unique Horror Genre and how Cat People (1942) Drew on Studio Talent
Julia Merolle
After having watched Cat People (1942) this week, the genre of horror has grown popular from Universal Studios, as we saw last week with the 1930s. RKO Radio Pictures was a film company that was created in 1928 and was one of the main film studios during Hollywood’s Golden Age, which was between the 20s and 60s. Due to the success of many Universal horror films, RKO decided to create their own horror films, Cat People being one of them. Cat People was unique to RKO Radio Pictures’ studio style because it brought up important aspects different from most horror films. For example, in the film, women aren’t believed in society and even when they reach out for help, they are told they are insane and over-dramatic. An example of this is when Irena tells Oliver her husband and Dr. Judd, her psychiatrist about her problems, yet they push them off.
Additionally, this film does a great job of showcasing how women are treated in society when trying to get help. For a movie made in 1942, this was the most progressive thing about it, which I applaud. I believe that for this reason, this drew on many studio talents such as Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Tom Conway, Jane Randolph, and Jack Holt as the main characters in the film Cat People. This also drew on a supporting cast of Alan Napier, Elizabeth Dunne, Elizabeth Russell, Alec Craig, Dot Farley, Theresa Harris, and Mary Halsey. When relating the film Cat People to RKO’s unique style, it was important because RKO had originally focused on musicals in the 1930s but due to seeing the success of horror from Universal Studios in the 1930s, they decided to create their own low-budget horror films with producer Val Lewton. This then brought RKO into the realm of horror and film noir, which were a part of RKO’s unique style of the 1940s.
Something else that was important about Cat People this week was that this film was at the time of the Hays Code, which I discussed in my post about Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein last week. The importance of the Hays Code when relating it to Cat People, was that it didn’t follow some of the rules that it originally prohibited because it wanted to make it safe to the public. For example, in Cat People, Oliver and Alice were obviously more than friends, even though Oliver was married. Another point is that Irena was technically the villain since she turns into a cat, even though she is the main character and according to the Hays Code, we aren’t supposed to sympathize with the antagonist. As I mentioned last week, the Hays Code was overall just ridiculous because it set very strict guidelines. Luckily, Cat People got by the Hays Code because of its message about women and how they are treated in society, which shows how RKO was ahead of its time, even though it is now defunct.

Astrological Outlook and Character Analysis for Individuals with a May 16th Birthday
They are extremely grasping, touchy and close to home individuals. High heart and consideration are the principal attributes of these individuals. In any case, they can be severe and corrupt, and notwithstanding their tranquil disposition they battle for power and authority. They have an unwavering confidence in their own power and are persuaded of their capacities; they are not exceptionally held. They need to carry on with a public existence and spread their social movement. Satisfying social obligations gives them delight and fulfillment, however they likewise appreciate harmony and significance, and they are fit for resistance and graciousness. They have numerous companions and colleagues, yet these must be helpful. Business associations with companions will bring them misfortunes. A portion of your concerns are brought about by foes. Monetary issues are not especially great in your childhood. Their material circumstance works on halfway through their lives. They will need congruity in marriage. We have failed... 1928
There's still time, I'm sure of it. We'll go back, we'll find another way- there's got to be another way. We can't give up when so much is at stake

André Antoine
Adolphe Appia
Edward Gordon Craig
Constantin Stanislavski.

Judge Howard P. Drew (June 28, 1890 - February 19, 1967) schoolboy Olympian, original “World’s Fastest Human,” scholar, soldier, lawyer, and first African American judge in Connecticut, was born to David and May Drew in Lexington, Virginia. The Drew family moved to New York City in 1895 and arrived in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904.
He entered Springfield High School but dropped out his freshman year to work to help support his family. He re-entered high school in 1910. As a high school junior, he was considered one of the fastest sprinters in the country. At the US Olympic Trials, he tied the World Record in the 100-meter dash.
At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he decided to go for a record in the 100-meter semi-final but he stepped into a soft spot on the track and his left leg gave out. He managed to hop across the finish line in first place. No amount of therapy could get him ready for the finals. He was told he risked permanent injury, he watched teammate Ralph Craig win both the 100 and 200-meter races. He played on the US Olympic baseball team, sharing left-field responsibilities.
The 1916 Olympics were canceled due to WWI. He was the star of the “Pershing Olympics” held in France for the Allied Forces but by the time tryouts for the 1920 USA track team came, he was unable to make the team.
He attended USC and during his college days, he tied or set every World Record in the dash from 30 to 250 yards. The press called him the “Negro Speed Marvel, Colored Flyer, and Crack Colored Sprinter” but the title that was first given to him before anyone else and still used to this day was “World’s Fastest Man.”
He refused invitations to run at Boston Athletic Association track meets because they posted a notice that “no Negro would ever represent the association.” He graced the cover of the NAACP’s Crisis magazine – the special “Education Number.” He wrote newspaper articles on civil rights, fitness, and education. He studied law at Drake University and moved to Hartford, Connecticut to practice law. In 1924, he was elected Justice of the Peace and in 1928, he was appointed a night court judge in the city. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
