I wanna talk about a few pet peeves with CQL's divergence versus the novel, on the events surrounding Wei Wuxian

Disclaimer: I am perfectly aware none of the things I state below couldn't happen in a live action environment and I'm not blaming them since they had to change these elements.

I'd like to preface that I started learning this story with CQL and at the time I fell in love with it and I still like a LOT of things about it. But then as I've read the novel and watched the donghua I've slowly realized how monumentally more incredible the original story is and how frustrating some parts of CQL became for me.

1) Wei Wuxian's death

One of my biggest issues with CQL's adaptation, which isn't even direct censorship, it was their own decision to adapt it this way, due to all the other alterations that were made to Wei Wuxian's character (which in turn are due to censorship)

In CQL Wei Wuxian's death is a suicide during the Nightless City events, as we see him being brutally affected and tormented by the events that occured, feeling utterly helpless and unable to discern any other course of action. So, in his desperation, he is shown throwing the Yin Tiger Seal, the most powerful artifact in existence, at the fucking power hungry mass of culitvators to literally fight over, after which he lets himself fall down from the cliff willingly.

This is momumentally diferent than the novel where he was never portrayed as suicidal. He always strives onwards through his sheer amount of will-power and strength.

So I would've loved to see the events unfold as in the novel, where he strives to survive and he only dies, months after the Nightless City incident, during the first siege, where his main focus was destroying the YTS as he realizes it's something even he himself, its inventor, cannot control and it musn't fall into the wrong hands. (as seen in the Chang Sect's massacre)

While trying to destroy the Amulet, it causes a wave of resentful energy and he is either desintegrated or torn apart by the fierce corpses surrounding him.

So it is absurd that in CQL he chose to let those people fight over the YTS, instead of him atempting to destroy it. But he is presented as sort of defeatist and nihilistic in CQL, which prompts him to resort to doing something so harmful and absurd.

Him being a just a victim of so many "bad" scenarios in CQL shows a very downplayed very weakened and mellowed down version of his original character, who is easily unable to cope, due to having stripped away his infailible integrity, will-power and ability to discern his own hubris.

2) Wei Wuxian actually inventing demonic cultivation like in the novel

Not gonna lie this was my utmost biggest shock regarding their changes, because I knew even before watching that WWX is the grandaddy of demonic cultivation and I was ready to support and simp over him using this path he forged for himself.

Not in CQL tho :D

Wei Wuxian still uses demonic cultivation in CQL, calling it crafty tricks (?) and all his inventions are there, including of course the YTS, but imagine if we were to actually see CQL!WWX invent demonic cultivation and use his wide array of demonic cultivation spells as he should've after he strived so hard to forge a path of his own.

So, in CQL, him using some demonic cultivation is prefaced by the entire Yi Iron arc and the hunt for Yi Iron pieces, which takes a vast majority of the CQL flashbacks. This isn’t present and it isn't needed in the novel. The Yi Iron is only crucial in CQL because it practically explains the already existent and yet unpracticed demonic cultivation that Wei Wuxian happend to mess around with.

3) To emphasize more on this, a big part of Wei Wuxian's morality is altered in CQL.

I am absolutely in love with how his morality is portrayed in the novel, literally every single aspect of his judgement and morality appeals to me so much, and I am in love with everything he is, it's fucking unreal. He is incredibly self-aware and more realistic and human, because he knows exactly where his stands and doesn't shy away from using any means to accomplish his goals and no matter how he is perceived as, all of his decisions are rooted in and filtered through his own personal sense of justice and selflessness. He’s also aware of his mistakes and assumes responsibility. He’s very absolute about the decisions he sticks to and they are all extremely intelligent and calculated.

He knows his own hubris is the reason for his downfall.

Just gonna add that the morality of MXTX's protagonists is so fucking delicious to me and sooo very rare to see.

But, in CQL most of his actions are invalidated and presented as a victim of circumstance or through others' interference (like the pointless sound of a second flute to absolve him of his guilt) for the sake of being more: good™ xD. In CQL he’s also shown to be in wrong place at the wrong time type of situations, which is highly downgrading what the original intent behind his character was and what he fought for with his own flesh and blood.

His actions are his own in the novel and extremely valid and he assumes every single one of them.

4) The necromancy - which is non-existent in CQL

This is another one of my biggest gripes, the fact that all the reanimated fierce corpses were replaced by..uhm puppets xD

Even Wen Ning isn't a fierce corpse as he was in the novel, because CQL prefaced how he was never dead to begin with so technically he was just, uhm very slowly healed by WWX xD.

This isn't just a harmless change, because it causes the biggest plotline of the book (unconvering Nie Mingjue's death) to be severly altered.

This also caused the Guanyin city events to be altered significantly, with Wen Ning weilding Baxia and being posesed by said saber spirit. Because remember? reanimation isn't a thing xD so Wen Ning could not have fought Nie Mingjue's reanimated corpse.

(while we're at Guanyin temple, how fucking amazing would it be if WangXian's confession scene also happened xD)

So I can't help but think...

With these few points that I made above, I cannot help but imagine how fucking cool that would be if CQL followed the novel plotline?

And I know, just as my wishful thinking, if CQL had followed all the main ideas in the novel it would really be a masterpiece, because the actors chosen already would nail the novel roles flawlessly, literally cast-wise everyone is perfect!

I don't know if you can relate but it's a big pet peeve to see (a) fanon taken as canon and (b) people slapping canon character names and appearances onto ocs (*cough Shana*). I feel so bad saying this bc you def don't need to justify shipping through canon + you can diverge. However, my problem is that it's never done tastefully at all with proper characterization and no bashing of characters. now i'm wondering whether this makes me a bad person or snob LMAO

Oh anon, I can definitely relate. Even without bringing in Modaozushi vs donghua vs CQL and all that related mess, I'm reminded of the circular stupid debates I had back in TB/X1999 fandoms a decade ago trying to convince people that the mystical cherry blossom tree was not some real blood drinking tree and it was part of an illusion. That one still annoys me to this day! They literally never say it's a real tree, but for some reason the real life blood sucking tree is a thing in that fandom.

I think the most frustrating part for me is that people take those readings and bring them to the text to argue with others. Write what you want, ship who you like, but it should not be crossing the line into metas. So many big CQL authors have their fans literally coming up and telling us that their fics are a better canon than the novel and that is no bueno. When your source for character interaction is a fanfiction and not any of the works, it tells me that you really don't know what you're talking about.

I don't think you're a bad person or a snob, Anon, for if you were than I am too. And while I admit I sometimes smirk and giggle behind my fan, I also heavily engage in don't like don't read and firm usage of the back button. It is frustrating that there are so many takes that have nothing to do with the actual novel, but fortunately for us, we have the actual novel to refer to for these things.

I do have to confess I am very interested in seeing some of these ships done with an eye to their canon characterizations and a lot of work put in to explain why they are acting this way. I'll believe a villain redemption if you show me how they improved. I won't if you tell me they were really like this all along, I was just blind to see it.

Anyway Anon, I think really the best option is to just ignore the bnfs and their invented canon. There are so many better fics in the fandom, we don't need any of the CQL bnfs here to have things to enjoy to read!

whilst i dislike the 'amendment' of mdzs canon by people who think they're better morally than mxtx, a lot of fanart these days is to some extent influenced by cql, and it doesn't seem ooc at all to make that lwj somewhat shorter than wwx and not at all to make him shy or blushy? idk, i'm not criticising your dislikes or anything, just suggesting that some ppl who make shy, smol lwj art aren't really making a moral judgment on mdzs.

I mean that's why the language of the post underlines that I am aware that it is very petty of me and that I added a tag saying that I am as well aware that I can't know for sure why people intentionally make lwj smaller in some fanart. There can be other reasons, but after have been subjected to so much discourse about their height I can't help having my brain go there first and just go benafflecksmoking.jpeg

As well I don't think using c/ql as an explanation in this case works because the production made a conscious effort to make wyb seem taller than xz, even though he isn't. I'm not sure I would phrase it as 'making a moral judgment', I don't think it is this grand, but I do think that it is interesting to interrogate how people are changing canonical character design (both in mdzs and c/ql) and perhaps what this reveals. For instance there are fandoms where it seems relatively common to draw canonically thin characters as fat, whereas I don't think I've ever seen mdzs-c/ql fanart that does that (there might be though, just haven't seen them personally!). The reason can't just be 'because this fandom is fatphobic duh' but it does bring into question why certain patterns of deviation from canon character design crop up, and I don't think in this fandom that it can be easily disentangled from discourses about bl-danmei and about the novel vs c/ql.

Based on the novel characterisation, I do believe it is ooc to make lwj shy and, to a degree, blushy (he does blush but only his ears, and it's not really shyness that does it). As well, I don't think lwj's height has any relation to his personality but it is a canon character design trait--it's not so much 'out of character' as it is a deviation his canon appearance, like giving him light brown hair or dark eyes or darker skin would be. Again, my point is not so much that people need to revere canon and never change anything about it, but questioning why certain things (making lwj smaller and less buff) seem to crop up and others simply do not? And why do certain traits that are kind ooc (blushy and shy) seem to appear more often when those divergence from canon character design are made? Can we believe that it has nothing to do with the discussions going in the fandom?

I enjoy both protective siblings Wei Wuxian/Jiang Yanli and kind of shitty siblings WWX/JYL that NMJ defends JC against. Jiang Fengmian, if included, should not be friendly and NMJ may punch him. It’s fine if it gets dark as long as it ends happy for Mingcheng.

Do not wants: Unsupportive Nie Huaisang, good Jiang parents

Prompts: 1) Jiang Cheng is the one who finds Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao after Wen Ruohan is killed instead of Lan Xichen, so Meng Yao is killed. This leads to Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue becoming sworn brothers… and more. 2) In an attempt to save his shixiong, Jiang Cheng tries to get Chifeng-zun on his side to have a proper inquiry into the Wen remnants. This can go a few ways but - hilariously bad seduction attempt that somehow works? Chifeng-zun having noticed how pretty JC is and using this as an opportunity to know him better? 3) Established relationship Mingcheng where NMJ is trying to get parental/family approval to marry JC. Canon divergence or modern AU is fine, but ideally dig into that hurt/comfort and potential JFM punching. 4) art prompt: protecting each other - from family? from Wens? from Jin Guangyao? others? small artfully placed blood splatters encouraged.

Jiang Cheng/Wen Ruohan

Likes: Daddy issues. Wen Ruohan starting off cold and calculating then reevaluating as he gets to know Jiang Cheng. If mature/explicit please only top!WRH. Praise kink - WRH inadvertently earning JC’s loyalty by praising him. It’s fine if WRH is still evil or if he’s just sort of morally gray but he should be on the darker side and there should be a power dynamic of older, more experienced WRH vs more innocent JC. Dubcon, manipulation, etc are fine, but ultimately JC should feel happy with his new daddy (even if his new daddy is maybe using him a little bit). WRH may start out very mercenary but by the end should value JC, even if it’s in a “he’s my favorite toy now” way. Light torture that WRH can oh so considerately heal JC of later with his spiritual energy (e.g. flogging, whipping not with a discipline whip, caning). Threatening with knives or swords.

He is unprepared for how JC blushes with just a little bit of flattery, and finds he wants to see more of it. 3) JC accompanies his father to a meeting and is ignored in favor of WWX. Upset, he goes to sulk, only to run into older, sophisticated WRH - who actually pays attention to him. 4) art prompt - WRH has JC in bondage, but they are both enjoying it. (or if a scene from any writing prompt strikes you!)

Nie Mingjue/Wen Ruohan

Likes: Enemies to lovers. Extremely conflicted NMJ. Obsessive/possessive WRH. Potentially dual cultivation to help with NMJ’s qi problems. A general “this is a terrible idea but fuck he’s hot” vibe. NHS scheming is fine but if there is a rescue attempt it should be “too late” (i.e. NMJ already has learned to want WRH). If you want to go dark, drugging is fine but no noncon/somnophilia. Knife/blood play is great especially if NMJ is trying to threaten WRH but WRH’s cultivation is high enough that he just heals up any cuts straight away, or like that scene in the donghua where he catches Baxia in two fingers.

Do not wants: golden core crushing, mutilation, heavy torture, noncon - however reluctantly, NMJ should agree. NMJ betraying his principles - if anything WRH should reluctantly become righteous to get into NMJ’s pants. Underage. WRH being good - at best he’s morally gray. “Rescue” from NHS (or anyone else). Interference from Wen Chao/Wen Xu.

Prompts: 1) WRH breaks sect leader Nie’s saber and doesn’t think much of it, not even when he hears that the man died - until the next discussion conference. Sure that WRH can’t help, NMJ makes a deal that if he can actually help then NMJ will stop trying to kill him and the Nie and Wen sects will be allies, but if WRH fails his life is forfeit. WRH, of course, agrees. 3) Modern AU or no Sunshot AU, WRH didn’t murder NMJ’s father but he is arrogant and shady as fuck. NMJ is deeply ashamed to find that he’s very into that. 4) art prompt: any scene from the fic prompts, or NMJ holding a completely unruffled, smirking WRH at saber-point.

Nie Mingjue/Pei Ming

Likes: NMJ doesn’t realize Pei Ming is a god until they’ve already become intimate (whether emotionally or physically). Pei Ming attempting to flirt as NMJ’s subordinate and becoming frustrated when NMJ insists on being professional. Pei Ming convinced he doesn’t have any deep feelings and yet unable to stay away from NMJ. Flirting via sparring. NMJ amazed that this “rogue cultivator” can match him. NHS 100% seeing what Pei Ming is up to and giving him a shovel talk.

Premise: Former convict Wei Wuxian, fresh out of nursing school, applies for a job at Dr. Lan Xichen’s pediatric practice. Lan Xichen (who sometimes takes pro bono foster children abuse cases) isn’t quite sold on the idea of a former felon turned nurse attending to already traumatized children, but upon interview decides to give WWX a chance. Not only does he never regret it, it turns out it’s to be the best decision he’s ever made, not only in regards to his practice. Meddling ensues, love blossoms, truths are revealed, happy end. Probably the fluffiest story on the list.

» ABO Yunmeng Shuanjie Fake Marriage AU

Not what you think. Does not involve pseudo-incest (at least not for a long time, haven’t decided on the end results yet). First ABO I’ve ever considered writing, but all the more exciting, since I know now what I want of it.

Pairing: WWX/LWJ (temporal, non-endgame - so far, platonic), WWX & JC (gen, ruling partners)

Includes: fake marriage, extra marital affair, male pregnancy, abo (mostly non-traditional, I think?), not actual pseudo incest, adoption, canon divergence, not everybody dies, Wen Chao being a monster, sexual assault (interrupted), golden core loss, NO golden core transfer, misunderstandings, complicated political situations, the Wens are saved and live in Lotus Pier, a-Yuan is still adopted, “sometimes love is not enough”

Premise: shortly after concluding the studies at Cloud Recesses LWJ starts courting WWX. Engagement is discussed between the two clans, but the Wen indoctrination and the burning of the Cloud Recesses gets in between. When LWJ refuses to lie in order to save WWX from Wen Chao’s assault, JC steps in and pretends to be the one engaged to WWX to save his brother from a forced bond. To prevent this from being debunked and to ensure a future marriage (which will now be more challenging to achieve, given the state of Cloud Recesses), LWJ and WWX mate and bond in the Xuanwu cave. Then Lotus Pier is sacked, JC loses his golden core, the Jiangs are dead and the Yunmeng siblings flee for their lives, find refuge in Yiling, etc. Plays out as in canon except they find out WWX is pregnant and transferring the golden core would cause an abortion. WWX still says do it, but changes his mind in the last minute, leading to JC finding out about his plan upon waking up and remaining coreless. They flee to Meishan and marry to protect WWX’s reputation (since a marriage would now be impossible for a long time on both sides - Gusu and Yunmeng, AND JC needs WWX more than ever and WWX is not abandoning his little brother) Sunshot happens, WWX invents the control tower & still saves the Sunshot campaign. The sixteen years that follow are utter chaos.

» Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian arranged marriage AU

You know what this is inspired by. 

Pairing: Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian (unfullfilled, for a long time)

Includes: arranged marriage, some characters die, Nie Mingjue dies but later, revenge, wwx adopts a-yuan, canon divergence, slow burn, learning to love, the Wens live, political intrigues, wwx and nhs teaming up against jgy

Premise: To save the Wens and himself from qi deviation Wei Wuxian marries Nie Mingjue (in spite of being in love with LWJ). Slowly some truths are revealed and feelings blossom but some tragedies cannot be prevented. NMJ realizes the feelings that are between WWX and LWJ, but they both marry regardless. Later WWX realizes that NMJ is similarly in love with Lan Xichen. With time they learn to love and respect each other, NMJ learns about what WWX did for JC, WWX learns clarity to play for NMJ when JGY nearly succeeds killing him (WWX suspects but he has no proof). NMJ still dies (disappears) and widower WWX spends the next decade or so seeking revenge and searching for his husband’s body so that he can rest in peace. It’s all very bittersweet, but there’s a happy ending.

The longest active and steadiest fandom. I know exactly what I’ll write and what not.

Summary: Sannan secretly tests a version of his experimental Ochimizu on a few of the captains. The result is that the new day dawns with some drastic changes to their bodies that have nothing to do with white hair, glowing eyes or bloodthirst, but with a whole other set of complications. 

Premise: Original story was supposed to be about Shinpachi developing and unexpected attraction to Sano, them “experimenting” together and Sano falling pregnant. While the others manage to turn back to their original bodies, Sano doesn’t and it is all very complicated. Eventually he does (after giving birth), but instead of it being a good thing it just makes things more complicated. In the end, he choses to live in a female body instead of death and marries Shinpachi. Would include trans issues, gender dysphoria, friendship vs. love, the nature of attraction, respect, feminism and female issues. I wanted to write it as a multi-chapter, but never got around to it. But I’d love to put it out there in any form I can.

» College AU, future fic

Premise: Everyone has grown up and moved on. The Oshitari cousins are now rooming together, both studying medicine at Tokyo University. They’re upper neighbors with Shishido Ryou (paedagogy) and Oishi Shuuichirou (medicine), who both miss their doubles partners, but have seemingly moved on from their middle school days and broken hearts. No such thing can be said about Kenya, who can’t get over his break up with Shiraishi following their graduation, or Yuushi, who seems to hold secrets of his own.

I haven’t developed much for this, most of it are scattered ideas, but I’d love to explore it. I’ve thought of some pairings for it, but none of them final. It would also leave a lot of room for casual stuff or one-night stands. It’s actually an ideal prompt premise, from that standpoint.

In the original Atobe runs away, but I’m thinking now he simply might not take it seriously enough and then it would escalate. He ends up moving in with the Sanada family. Your typical rich boy loses everything and struggles through poverty, finding meaning, building a life for himself, coming off age.

I do mostly serious stuff, like drama, tragedy, intrigues, arranged marriage, tragic backstory, etc. I like to put my characters through a lot of suffering. I always joke that it’s very easy to spot my favorite character by the amount of torture I put them through. I feel that it makes the happy ending weigh even more. Sometimes I even prefer a bad ending, if it gives the story more meaning (I mean, imagine LotR trilogy have a happy ending. It would totally take away all the development and the lessons the characters went through.) I wish I could write light stuff but so far I have not succeeded. I use a lot of sarcasm and irony though? 

My shorter fics tend to be fluffy and sweet rather than funny, if full of playful banter and teasing. Relationships are usually depicted in a naturalistic rather than romantic way (I’m ace/aro myself, and I have lots of opinions about the nature of love and attraction, and how a functioning relationship ideally looks like and it tends to seep into my writing). Instead of traditional romance I like to write a non-traditional one. Slow burn, instead of love on first sight. Learning to love instead of falling hard. But it also depends on the pairing. I can write most things if I put my mind to it, so don’t hesitate to prompt me and I’ll let you know whether it works for me or not.

I’m not shy of dealing with child abuse, assault, suicidal ideation, trauma, disability and other difficult topics in my writing, so if you wanna request any of these or something similar I’m a-okay with it, as long as you discuss it with me. I’m not knowledgeable in everything so it’s likely I’ll need to do research, but I’m more than alright with it. Honestly, it’s very probable that I’d love to try. 

» Kinks

I’m okay with most stuff. Where I draw the line is the really hardcore stuff like scat and kinks involving feces, some forms of humiliation, zoophilia, necrophilia, mutilation, stuff like that. 

I’m alright with both dub-con & non-con (although I refuse to depict is as normalized, or glorified), bondage, s&m, dom/sub, light bdsm (ask me about the harder stuff. I’m not against it, I’m just not always in the mood or right mindset for writing it), omorashi (tentative, ask me), daddy kink, breath play, age play, spanking, verbal humiliation, dirty talk, edging, come eating, orgasm denial,... all the good stuff.

Ooh, yes. I definitely agree with you that the book/webnovel fandom deserves its own space. And I am sorry that CQL has had such a pervasive effect on the original source fandom, to the point that it's created issues for y'all.

I was rambling in the tags more due to where I encountered the post (in the middle of a bunch of other posts that were ... decidedly displeased with new CQL fans) than in reaction to the actual post itself, which is why I was in the tags and not actually adding a comment. So I guess I will just go ahead and put this here.

Sometimes it's so clear we're all seeing different sides of the fandom depending on which posts or blogs we run across. I almost never go in the generic CQL or MDZS tags, purely from long fandom experience with big fandoms having exactly these kinds of issues. MDZS fandom has been a fair-sized, well-tended garden up to recently I think, and is now experiencing a period of exponential growth on the international fandom side, which brings with it the almost requisite "growing pains".

My tags were more about how growing fandoms with different iterations of material have to kind of shuffle around and group up a bit by source material preference. Adopt a little bit of a "live and let live" attitude to other people's canon cherry-picking. Pick a tag specific to the part of the fandom you prefer and use that instead - if a fandom can standardize that kind of usage (which is hard but not impossible) it makes it a lot easier to navigate. MDZS just likely hasn't really needed the disambiguation up until this influx of Netflix-era fans.

I was just restating things, mostly to myself, about how fandoms evolve: Marvel comics fandom for instance, which has been around for decades, after Iron Man in 2008 had to adapt to the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (vs. Marvel animated vs. Marvel Netflix series) and the complete retcon or deviation of character backgrounds/timelines/events that those new fans considered their basic canon.

I mean, it's possible to read MCU Black Widow one way and comics Natasha Romanov completely differently, and both are valid and supported by 'canon'. Just as you can read danmei Wei Wuxian as having a different characterization from CQL Wei Wuxian due to events/timelines/interactions that are changed between the versions, and your view of the public perception of Lan Wangji's regard for him within the wider cultivation world will depend on which canon is your canon.

The problem on Tumblr seems to be posts making sweeping claims or specific statements about one character or creators' intentions, etc. without making clear what source(s) the observations are being drawn from, so people end up at cross purposes when they're speaking from conflicting canons. Eventually it could just become natural to say "CQL Meng Yao" or "novel Lan Xichen", the same way fans learned to differentiate "Fraction 'Hawkguy'" from "movie Hawkeye".

I think it's just that everything's complicated by the cultural divide, where new international fans are constantly popping up on the scene and reblogging posts or querying longtime MDZS fans about basic cultural and worldbuilding information. So obviously novel-savvy fans get used to (and probably tired of) being the explicators and illuminators of the building blocks of the fandom, and then when the waves of new fandom adopters diverge and start querying among themselves, no longer necessarily sticking to the same terms and interpretations that they just asked for, the longtime fans get justifiably irked.

But people learning new things do that - take the information given them and assimilate it for themselves, discussing with their peers and working out opinions sometimes independent of the source. I understand that novel fans didn't necessaily volunteer to be the parents/teachers for the fandom, so it must be kind of offputting to see the same people that were bugging you about what various historical titles mean then deciding that they are choosing to disregard the other relevant background info you've offered. Like you're an english professor and they're turning in papers predicated on the movie adaptations instead of the novels you've assigned.

All I can say is, if we (fandom-wide) make the attempt to keep off of each other's fandom toes, and try to be clear where we're coming from when e.g. doing character motivation speculation or meta posts, then maybe there will be fewer resentments on any side. New fans, in particular, need to watch it with the value judgements and moral outrage posts regarding content they aren't willing to respect in it's original context. It really sometimes is just a matter of understanding that in fandom, canon is not always the same for everyone when there are multiple versions.

Ramble, ramble, metaphor, etc. Anyway, sorry for getting all up in your tag viewer.

I know that CQL has warped fandom’s perception of MDZS’ wangxian, but the idea that other people thought wwx was lwj’s only friend during his first life (and thus why them traveling together in his second life would not be ‘subtle’–aka, ‘everyone figured out from the beginning it was wwx because lwj never had any other friend!’) can only derive from a certain reading of the events in CQL, and is completely contradicted by what can be found in the text of the novel. 

The novel makes it abundantly clear, on multiple occasions, that people (outside of the lan clan who saw him protect wwx of course and, like, the wen remnants) believe that lwj hated and condemned wwx, and that he would not willingly associate with someone who practice modao. I’m not just talking about jc; it was a shared sentiment about two very public figures, one that we see reflected many times by different characters in the novel. I’m too lazy to go find them all  ✌, but just this example from the Second Siege should demonstrate my point:

A woman in white robes stood forward, her eyes filled with tears, “Hanguang-jun, just what is wrong with you? You… You are not you anymore. In the past, you clearly could not even stand the Yiling Laozu. Just what technique did Wei Wuxian use to bewitch you for you to stand on the side opposite to us?”

Lan Wangji didn’t pay attention to her. Having not received a reply, the woman could only add in pity, “If so, then how undeserving of your name!”

TLDR; People, wwx included, genuinely believed that lwj disapproved of him and of his methods–some even painting them as being involved in a grand feud. No one thought wwx was lwj’s only friend, safe perhaps for lxc. No one would have expected lwj to protect and stand alongside wwx.
