Peters touts Great Lakes efforts in Alpena stop | News, Sports, Jobs

The students performed CPR and other treatments on a dummy. Peters visited the college Tuesday while on his annual motorcycle tour around the state.
ALPENA â U.S. Sen. Gary Peters vowed during a Tuesday visit in Alpena that he would continue working to protect the Great Lakes and said that, though school is resuming throughout the state, the coronavirus remains a looming threat against which people should take precautions.
On his way through Alpena on his fifth annual motorcycle tour of Michigan, Peters stopped at Alpena Community College on Tuesday for a brief tour and to peek in on students â some of whom were back in class for the first time since school was closed in March to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Peters introduced himself to students in an English class taught by instructor Sean Sexton and toured ACCâs nursing program wing, where staff showed him new technology used to prepare future nurses. Peters watched a mock code drill â a simulation of the medical response to a patient who has no pulse, has stopped breathing, and is unresponsive.
Peters said that, in his conversations with students around the state, most have said they are happy to be back in school for face-to-face instruction.
He also added that the COVID-19 pandemic is still a looming threat, and following recommended and required guidelines is a must to avoid a repeat of the school closure students faced earlier this year.

Peters said his Harley Davidson will put on about 1,000 miles in the coming days, and he is eager to visit the communities and people he encounters along the way.
âAt every stop, I talk about issues I have been working on, and it gives me a chance to hear directly from people about what their needs are,â Peters, a Democrat, said. âIt was great to be able to come to the college again, see the improvements it has made, and spend a little time with the students and staff.â
ACC President Don MacMaster said Tuesday was the fourth time Peters has been to the college since 2015.
MacMaster said Peters has helped the school acquire millions of dollars in grants to help expand the campus and programming, including $2.25 million from the U.S. Department of Education for simulators and related personnel and $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for equipment for distance learning programs.
âHeâs been here several times, and it is always huge,â MacMaster said. âThat demonstrates a level of awareness and concern for this area of the state that we appreciate. When a senator makes time to come to campus, it is a great day.â

âAlpena is a beautiful place on the Great Lakes and we have to make sure they remain healthy and vibrant,â Peters said. âI helped get an increase in Great Lakes funding, because we want to keep Alpena and all the other lakeside communities in the area that way.â
Peters planned a stop in Traverse City to meet with people in the cherry industry, whom he says have been hurt by the current market for their product.
âIâll be meeting with farmers to talk about agricultural issues here in the state,â Peters said. âIâve been actively fighting against the Turks, who have been dumping cherry products in the market that have put our cherry growers at risk and threatening their businesses. I will continue to fight for them.â
Peters planned to meet with small business owners in Grand Rapids and Lansing. A stop in Detroit is also on the itinerary.
âSmall businesses all over Michigan, including here in Alpena, are struggling, and we need to make sure they get the assistance they need,â Peters said.

âAll those topics are great, but where are the results?â Abby Walls, spokeswoman for Republican John James, Petersâ opponent in November, told The News. âYou can sponsor a lot of bills, but the fact is he only has had four signed into law.â
Walls said Peters has also issued press releases in the past that say he intends to attend a meeting or address an issue, but he then fails to do so. Walls said James will be active and have top-notch attendance.
James âknows what hard work is and he knows how serious the saying âthe buck stops with meâ is,â Walls said. âThe most basic function of a senator is to show up, and Sen. Peters hasnât been doing that.â

DaMajority Fresh Article http://www.damajority.com/caymanian-man-brought-back-life-heart-stops-twice/
Caymanian Man Brought Back To Life After Heart Stops Twice
CAYMAN ISLANDS (October 4, 2017) â A 33-year-old Caymanian father, son and brother is breathing again â with a sigh of relief â after the Health City Cayman Islandsâ medical team brought him back from the brink of death.
Bjorn Ebanksâ heart stopped twice, and he underwent CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) for almost 90 minutes before being placed on advanced life support and undergoing emergency surgery to remove life threatening blood clots in his lungs.
The surgical experience and skills of Dr. Binoy Chattuparambil, Health Cityâs Chief Cardiac Surgeon and Senior Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, saved Ebanksâ life with a procedure so difficult that fewer than 20 hospitals in the world are likely to have attempted it.
Ebanks arrived at the tertiary care facility in East End, Grand Cayman via ambulance. During the journey, he went into cardiac arrest. He was undergoing resuscitation efforts in the ambulance and while he was being brought into Health City triage.
As hospital emergency staff refused to give up on resuscitation attempts in the triage area, Dr. Binoy, as colleagues and patients call him, swiftly intervened, having just completed his morning rounds in the Intensive Care Unit.
Dr. Dhruva Kumar Krishnan is Senior Consultant in Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Health City. He is a certified American Heart Associationâs Basic Life support /Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider as well as an Instructor. His team conducts the BLS/ACLS classes at Health City.
Dr. Dhruva recalled the extensive resuscitation efforts: âWe went on for close to 90 minutes. He did come back two times and then we sort of lost [him] so we continued the cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Dr. Binoy walked in and he decided that we should try the ECMO.â
Following a rapid transfer of the patient to the operating theater, he was placed on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) life support, which involves channeling the patientâs blood into a roller pump that serves as the patientâs âheart.â
In response to his colleaguesâ concern that it might be too late for ECMO in Ebanksâ case, Dr. Binoy was confident: âI told them, if you are not doing it, itâs 100 percent death, if you are doing it then maybe one percent ⌠for that patient itâs the only chance.â
With all hands on deck and team members performing heart massage to keep the patient alive during the procedure, Dr. Binoy recalled that it was an adrenaline-charged and intense scene: âYou should have seen the whole team ⌠everyone is up in there doing the massage on one side while we instituted the ECMO to the groin, which took me about 20 minutes.â
The emergency team waited with acute anticipation as the ECMO machine did its work.
Within five minutes Dr. Binoyâs timely intervention was vindicated as the patientâs heart slowly resumed beating: âWith the ECMO he was getting better, he stabilized and I shifted him to the ICU.â
Next, Dr. Binoy sought to determine what had caused the young manâs heart to stop, and to find a solution.
He enlisted the help of the patientâs loved ones in his investigation.
âHis parents and girlfriend ⌠told us that for the last two weeks he had been very unwell, with shortness of breath,â which deteriorated to the point where he asked his girlfriend to call for an ambulance.
Dr. Binoy quickly diagnosed the problem when the patientâs mother recalled that her son was diagnosed with clots in his leg veins on two occasions â the first time in 2005 and again in 2008. After each diagnosis he was advised to take blood thinners for six months and then discontinue the medication.
With this new information in hand, Dr. Binoy immediately ordered a CT scan, which revealed that blood clots were completely blocking both lung arteries.
âThere was absolutely no blood going to the lungs. So there was only one option: surgery again. From the CT scan room we took him immediately to the operating room ⌠this surgery took almost 10 hours,â the surgeon explained
The emergency surgery to remove the blood clots is a complicated procedure called a pulmonary endarterectomy, and involves putting the patient on a heart and lung machine.
âWe had to cool the body to 20 degrees centigrade. I had to drain all the blood from the body, open both lung arteries and remove the clots from both sides,â Dr. Binoy recalled.
To allow the patient more time to recover, he was kept on ECMO for an additional 48 hours, which was needed because his brain did not initially respond well to the treatment.
âBut after five to six days he was perfect, there was no neurological deficit and he started walking after six days ⌠lung pressure returned to normal, his heart became normal. And after two weeks we sent him home,â recounted Dr. Binoy.
âIâm very happy about the outcome,â Dr. Binoy said, âitâs kind of bringing him from the grave back to life ⌠he is such a young man. It would have been very easy to say he had cardiac arrest and that after 45 minutes nothing more could be done. But we took that one percent chance when we decided to put him on ECMO and decided to do the surgery.â
Dr. Binoy expressed his joy at this slim chance of success being realized: âIt might have been a one percent chance then, but now the patient is 100 percent. For the family theyâve got their son, their boyfriend back, so itâs very, very satisfying.â
Dr. Binoy explained that the delicate and rare pulmonary endarterectomy procedure involves the use of very fine instruments for incisions and the removal of tiny clots from the lungs.
âThe learning curve for this procedure is very long. Thatâs why there are only 10 to 20 hospitals where it has been done in the entire world. But the surgery is so gratifying,â he said.
As one of the few surgeons worldwide with extensive experience in the intricate procedure, Dr. Binoy noted: âI have been involved in at least 300 cases of this in India at the hospital where Dr. Devi Shetty, one of the experts in this surgery (and Health Cityâs founder), was involved. I have seen a lot. I have seen young people, who are unconscious or who are bedridden or on home oxygen, and watched them going back home to their lives.â
Relieved at having a second chance at life, Bjorn Ebanks has only praise for his surgeon and for Health City: âDr. Binoy is a good doctor. He is one of the best I would say. Most doctors would probably have given up and said âalright Iâm gone.â This is a good facility, real good facility ⌠people in here are good too and they treat you well ⌠Iâm just grateful that I am here and I can have another chance to see my family.â
The medical team was also emotional and overjoyed at Ebanksâ near miraculous recovery.
âBjorn is extra special for us because we sort of pulled him out of nowhereâŚAnd he is a fighter, he came out of it. And I think it makes us very happy, to see people like him walk out of ICU and walk out of the hospital,â Dr. Dhruva said.
As for Ebanks, he is looking to the future with a renewed sense of purpose: âGod got some plan for me. I donât know what is, but he got some plan for me.â

Coming Full Circle with Naomi Even-Aberle
I have long been curious about a fellow Rapid City woman that I see making a real difference in our community. I first met Naomi Even-Aberle in 2015, through the Arts Legacy Project (she was an artist, and I was a featured storyteller, and then the following year she was a featured storyteller). Naomi is the founder of Full Circle Martial Arts Academy, and recently she and I sat down to chat about the future of her studio, martial arts programs here in the Black Hills and some exciting news that she wanted to share. Master Naomi Even-Aberle is the Master Instructor/Examiner for Full Circle Martial Arts Academy in Rapid City. She is a Kukkiwon-certified 4th Dan Master Black Belt in Taekwondo, a Cchung Ryoung Hapkido Federation 4th Dan Master degree Black Belt, and a red belt in Kumdo/Kumpub. She began her martial arts career in 2006 under the direction of 5th Degree Master Instructor Nathan Schultz. Master Naomi Even-Aberle (along with her husband Nikolas Aberle) do all they can to build confident, well-rounded students. Master Naomi Even-Aberle has traveled to Seoul, South Korea in 2009, 2010 and 2012 for specialized training under the direction of Great Grand Master Moo Young Yun. Both Master Naomi Even-Aberle and Nikolas Aberle continue to regularly train and participate with the Greenquist Academy Taekwondo Association, under 5th Dan Master Nathan Schultz and within the United States Chang Moo Kwon Taekwondo Union. We met at Pure Bean in the East of Fifth neighborhood in Rapid. Naomi told me about her big news first: she was recently awarded a National Art Strategies Community Creative Fellowship, which will provide a launching pad to expand her martial arts and community outreach program. The Bush Foundation is one of several partners in this Fellowship and, as Naomi explained, she will have a chance to learn and connect and develop her leadership skills thanks to this award. Naomi explained, âTwenty-four individuals are selected. Weâll go to Vermont in August for ten days, and each be paired with a mentor â someone that maybe has an alignment with your project. Then you work on your marketing. They help groom you. You work peer to peer with lots of other people, and then you come back and do learning modules throughout the rest of the year. Then, in February 2018, weâll go to Washington D.C., and the National Arts Strategies Board provides a panel of entrepreneurs, funders, donors, grant specialists that you present your pitch to.â Naomi will be using her Full Circle Martial Arts Curriculum in this endeavor, which she created. This will provide a springboard to integrate her martial arts program with other organizations to provide martial arts training to more people here in the Black Hills, helping to build self-confidence, mutual respect and physical fitness awareness for children and others. This summer, theyâll be working with Atayape (a mentoring program for kids in 4th-12th grades, established by the Rural American Initiatives and taught by Lakota adults, designed to promote a drug- and alcohol-free life). âWeâre having them come to our gym, and weâre doing a one-hour martial arts class for all four of their groups. At the end of the program, theyâll test for their white belt. Weâll have the students break the board, with all of their support system around. Our students will provide a potluck for their extended families, and even Atayapeâs staff will be testing and learning with their students. So you have teacher-to-student relationships being built.â The Fellowship will open up avenues for funding and support. Previously, Full Circle had a traveling program in Kyle, South Dakota, which had been paid for through Indian Health Servicesâ Suicide Prevention Program. Unfortunately, when their liaison to the program left, the classes stalled. As Naomi told me, âI canât afford to go on my own, and those kids need a martial arts program. I want to help support additional growth (into that community) either through a grant, or supplies or potential networking and connections.â As to how the fellowship will help grow her leadership skills Naomi explains that it will âhelp with branding and messaging.â She wants to be able to share the message of Full Circle in ways that will make sense to those not already versed in the terminology of martial arts. She also wants to create mixed programs throughout western South Dakota, with martial arts and music, martial arts and dance, etc. But Naomi is not just listening to her own heart â sheâs paying attention to what we are asking for here in Rapid City and the Black Hills. âI really want to be a community-driven business. Weâre providing community-centered programming that hopefully helps build a stronger foundation for the students. Iâm open to lots of ideas. I want to make the martial arts accessible, not just financially, but also travel-wise. If thereâs a way that we can eventually purchase a van, to go into communities or we can drive and pick kids up. Building a community through practice helps us feel connected.â Her first steps, once she is completed with the training made available to her through the Fellowship, is to re-look at her structure and organization. She wants the messaging to be clear, engaging and authentic. She also will be looking at funding in new ways. âOne of the challenges I face is that I canât just hire teachers. They first have to be students and train under someone. Itâs a huge mentorship program. It takes a year to three years for someone to reach black belt, and I donât allow someone to teach until theyâre black belt. Itâs a quality issue, and Iâm one of the only ones in the area who can offer that. I want to pay our artists what theyâre worth. Iâm constantly looking for organizations that can support our programming. There might be a grant that we can write together or separately, that pays for operations. Thereâs a lot of people who do funding.â One of the ways that Naomi sees that organizations can help support martial arts here is through scholarship programs. She also wants to create more outreach, from Full Circle, into the community. âWe might volunteer at the Hope Center or at the Humane Society. It starts by building connections.â The Fellowship will connect Naomi and Full Circle Martial Arts Academy with writers, actors, artists and entrepreneurs throughout the nation. That kind of feedback will help inform her branding and messaging of Full Circle and also her leadership abilities. âIâm hoping the messaging makes sense, itâs engaging and authentic and allows me to find ways to continue to morph but also to adjust that message to fit what our community needs. Like Atayape, which is a non-profit.â Naomi will also be looking at expanding the qualifications at Full Circle, including partnering with the fire department for CPR certification classes. She hopes that citizens of our area will learn that martial arts are not just about fitness, but something more. âThereâs a limited perspective of what martial arts can do. Yes, we are a gym, but we also talk about life. Weâre still a young organization. Weâve been running classes for just barely three years. Weâre looking for feedback. I know that martial arts isnât for everyone, but weâre looking to connect with other people in a way that drama or football or something else might not. This is a safe space to everybody. To connect to kids that arenât very confident, shy or uncoordinated kids, or those that are bullied. Martial Arts is an amazing place to build confidence, build physical balance and coordination, and put those kids on the same level as other students. It helps them to believe in their own power and their own right to take up space.â Needless to say, that includes the involvement of more girls and women in Martial Arts. âWhen weâre able to help women to feel strong enough in their body to do that, they help other women to do that. In South Dakota, thatâs really important. Women are fifty percent of our population but highly underrepresented in many fields. Martial Arts has been a masculine field, so having women step in helps challenge that traditional status quo. If we donât give women the opportunity to challenge and explore and think for themselves in roles that are traditionally male, itâs hard to ask them do so anywhere else. Weâve been working really hard to change our language in our classes, using pronouns appropriately and being more attentive to how we say things and what those things might mean. Now, we donât go into classes and call out âfeminist powerâ! Itâs about âindividual power.â Every student has the right to stand up for themselves and to advocate for themselves. My students are two years old up to sixty-seven, and they tell me when something isnât working for them. Itâs asking them to be accountable for their own learning.â Clearly, Naomi is an ambitious and enthusiastic advocate for Martial Arts and for the Black Hills community of artists, entrepreneurs, kids, and families. If you know someone interested in training in martial arts or youâd like to learn more about Naomi Even-Aberle and the Full Circle Martial Arts Academy, please check out their website at http://ift.tt/2sTE5Sd.
