It’s a very fun comic! The marriage seeker mystery can finally be put to rest 😌 I don’t really think it changes much, that it overrides anything we knew or that I theorized, esp since we already knew about the party-wide romance ban, but the meme potential (and fic potential) IS so strong now that we know Laios was the one most targeted and distrusted of all… And trust was the biggest issue, romance brings nothing but trouble in their minds but the trouble they experienced with the marriage seeker was because she was disingenuous and manipulative and Laios was oblivious, and as time went on the party realized that Marcille was trustworthy and they stopped worrying about that particular scenario happening. It can def bring a new meaning to the "This is my succubus?!! No one can see it no one can know AAAAA" line though lmfaoo. It’s so funny and honestly such a win for aroace Laios

there is something that feels so mature about dungeon meshi.

now i know im commiting the sin of comparing all manga and anime to shonen and shoujo, which is like comparing all american comics to superhero comics but to be fair, those two genres are probably the biggest piece of the pie in terms of popularity and sales so it bares to be said.

there is a distinct lack of... i dont know how to say it. naive intensity? idealism? larger than life personalities? everyone here is literally just a guy. their emotions feel, all things considered rather subdued. the main cast, laios, chilchuk, marcille, senshi and izutsumi, they dont feel like the heroes of a story, they dont feel like a found family or loyal life long, fire forged friendships. they dont feel like blood brothers or soul companions. they are honestly closer to just coworkers. they are not the mugiwaras, is my point. they are more like the crew of the cowboy beebop, they are people who are here to do a job. and yes they grow closer as the story goes along but at no point do they do these giant dramatical gestures because of the power of friendship.

they feel like eminently practical people, moved at every moment by very pragmatical concerns. at no point i feel they sacrifice logic for the sake of sentiment, in the way that other anime protagonists do, who will challenge reason, fate and the gods themselves in the name of love or whatever.

in fact its quite the opposite! sentiment is guided by logic! laios himself screams it at shuro at one point: the fact that they are eating three square meals, taking rests and pacing themselves demonstrates they care far more about rescuing falin than shuro does, who is doing the more anime-typical thing of barreling on ahead without resting motivated out of some naive understanding of "love".

i don't understand the hate towards Toshiro. i mean, i understand why someone may not like him, but not the genuine hate and especially calling him neurophobic. like he's not being particularly mean, he've been raised like this. he clearly comes from a region based on feodal Japan, he's an heir of a noble clan, a samurai, of course he can't allow himself act anyhow besides normal, and he gets confused when other people act like that

i don't think he hates Laios in particular, Toshiro just can't understand him. i think there should've been a scene after their fight when they could have at least a small talk about it, and i bet Laios doesn't really understand Toshiro's culture and behaviour just as he does (not to blame him but he can't even remember/pronounce his name right)

and i kinda think they did talk about it at least in post-canon (maybe not without Cabru's help), and Toshiro wouldn't be so freaked out by Laios's behaviour

also a little headcanon from me but Laios would try to remember Tohiro's name but would still shorten it, like Toshi or Shiro (i personally like the Toshi one) and Toshiro would let him do that

Toshiro is not some kind of a neurophobic bully, he may even be neurodivergent himself

Laios - Likes whatever he listens to on the top 50 pop radio. Mentioned he liked Taylor swift to Marcille once and she’s been pestering him about it ever since.

Falin - Old Country/Cowboy music. Makes her feel like a horse (good thing)

Marcille - swiftie but if someone would put her on some SOPHIE her life would change. Really trying to get Laios to get more into Taylor Swift and leave the realm of “casual”

Chilchuck - big metal fan. he’s a white dad you know what’s up. Makes people listen to Messhugah in the car

Senshi - the beautiful sounds of birds in trees in the morning. Doesn’t listen to music.

Izutsumi - Only listens to video game soundtracks. Can’t imagine sitting down and just listening to music without anything else. Prefers rhythm game music

Namari - identical music taste to chilchuck. Kind of freaks her out that her music taste is the same as a middle aged father’s

Toshiro - For someone who doesn’t even say swear words at the ripe age of 27, he’s into hip hop and rap. He’s very secretive about it, though, since he’s trying to keep up this ‘proper and princely’ facade.

Kabru - Arianator (hardcore). Likes to listen to everything, though. Laios once said he liked Ariana and Kabru’s been fighting a war with Marcille ever since in the struggle to get him to choose one pop girlie to commit to.

Mithrun - In his past he didn’t really like any music artists and listened to music on mute in order to make interesting Spotify wrappeds. Now he likes harsh noise

Thistle - big classical music fan and also is the number one elitist of all time. Genuinely such an asshole about music and music theory.

anon I literally come from a state known for horse riding and cowboys I will actually cum so hard from thinking about this for too long

but. Laios as a ranch hand…he has such a strong connection with his horse and it fully trusts and listens to him (I can even see him riding a mule tbh. I kinda prefer that)

he also has a terribly beat up pickup truck but he swears by its “character”. His boots and jeans are always muddy and his button up is always uneven but his smile and farmers tan is so damn charming,,,
