Cow Dung Agnihotra Yagna and Its Spiritual Significance
Tumblr media
Introduction: In today's fast-paced world, where technology reigns supreme and urbanization is rampant, there's a growing inclination towards reconnecting with our roots and exploring ancient practices that promote holistic well-being. One such practice gaining momentum is the Agnihotra Yagna, a ritual deeply rooted in the Vedic tradition that involves the use of cow dung cakes. In this article, we delve into the spiritual significance and practical applications of utilizing cow dung for Agnihotra Yagna.
Understanding Agnihotra Yagna: Agnihotra Yagna is a sacred fire ritual performed at sunrise and sunset, wherein oblations are offered into the fire accompanied by the chanting of specific Vedic mantras. The word "Agnihotra" translates to "sacrificial fire" in Sanskrit, signifying the offering of oneself to the divine through fire. This ancient practice is believed to purify the environment, promote healing, and create positive vibrations that benefit all living beings.
The Role of Cow Dung Cakes: Central to the Agnihotra Yagna is the use of cow dung cakes as fuel for the sacred fire. Cow dung, known as "gobar" in Hindi, holds immense significance in Hindu culture and Ayurveda. It is revered for its purifying properties and is considered to be a natural disinfectant and fertilizer. When burned during the Agnihotra ritual, cow dung cakes release beneficial gases and microorganisms that cleanse the atmosphere and create a harmonious environment conducive to spiritual growth.
The Spiritual Significance: Cow dung is not merely viewed as an ordinary waste product but is considered sacred in Hinduism. The cow, often referred to as "Gau Mata" or mother cow, is revered as a symbol of abundance, fertility, and divine grace. Utilizing cow dung for Agnihotra Yagna is believed to invoke the blessings of the divine cow and facilitate a deeper connection with nature and the cosmos. The ritual acts as a bridge between the individual soul (Atman) and the universal soul (Paramatman), fostering spiritual upliftment and inner peace.
Practical Applications: Apart from its spiritual significance, Agnihotra Yagna and the use of cow dung cakes have practical applications in promoting environmental sustainability and wellness. The smoke generated during the ritual is known to have antimicrobial properties, purifying the air and reducing harmful bacteria and pollutants. Additionally, the ash produced from the burnt cow dung is rich in nutrients and can be used as organic fertilizer for agriculture, promoting soil health and crop yield.

How to sanitize your home naturally ?
Tumblr media
The saying modern problems require modern solutions might be true but the need of sanitizing your home is not new. It is just that suddenly the COVID-19 pandemic has made us realize the importance of cleanliness and sanitization. One might consider rinsing his home with harmful chemical disinfectants, but in reality it does more harm than good. So, what is the right way to sanitize your home?
Tumblr media
Sanitizing the environment is something that has been an important practice in the ancient Vedic civilization. In the past, every public gathering was initiated, only after doing certain rituals to sanitize and purify, the environment and the actual void of space. In Ayurveda viruses and bacteria are called “bhoota” which also means ghost because ghosts live in the microcosm and are not visible to the naked eye. The process of sanitizing is called bhoot shudhdhi. Here shudhdhi means “to purify”. To Sanitize your home and kill these kinds of harmful parasites, there are certain rituals which can be performed. Let us discuss about the science of these rituals and how we can all incorporate them in our
Tumblr media
day to day lives. Let us start with the basics. In Ayurveda fire is used to dissolve elements into the atmosphere. For example if we take chilli and put it in fire everyone present in the room will feel its effect. The pungent elements of chilli will dissolve slowly into the atmosphere. In such a scenario, the atmosphere around you, depends on the kind of element that you put into the Fire. That is the reason why one should always put sattvic (pure) elements into the fire. This concept like other concepts in Hinduism transcends other
Tumblr media
dimensions also. For example, digestive fire is also considered a type of fire, that is why we should only put pure elements into our stomach so that our body is made up of pure elements only. If we put junk in our food our body will be polluted just like the environment. To sum it all, we should only put pure elements into the divine fire of “Yagya” and into the divine digestive fire of our stomach. In recent years many Western scientists have done research on ancient Indian technique of Yagya. Let us focus on the scientific aspect of the practice that can be used to sanitize your home and not just on the spiritual aspect. What is Yagya ? Yagya is an ancient ritual in which we put fire in in a specific container and we feed the Fire certain herbs and then chant certain mantras. The fuel that is chosen for this fire has to be chosen properly. It is specifically mentioned in the Ayurveda, what fuel is to be used for a Yagya and what Herbs are to be put, once the fire is Lit. Yagyas can have different time spans, depending on the need and severity of the purification. There are Yagyas which can be performed in 10 minutes and there are Yagyas which take days to perform.
Tumblr media
Yagya is the scientific process of sublimation and transformation of healthy constituents of plants and herbal medicines, into vapor and its expansion and dissipation in the surrounding atmosphere. It also helps in maintaining the balance of oxygen, carbon-di-oxide and other gases, along with reducing the harmful growth of poisonous, ozone layer-depleting gases and radiations into the surroundings. The term Yagya is often used for every process (e.g. cycles of Nature) and philosophy, which generates healthy and essential substances with beneficial effects and goodwill into the atmosphere. This is why Yagya has been termed as the nucleus of all the natural cycles. It is amazing to note that the Ozone Layer has also been mentioned in the Vedas. Several hymns of Rig Veda and Atharva Veda, mention that the earth is surrounded by a membrane, which is very thick. The term used for Ozone layer is 'mahat ulba'. Mahat in Sanskrit means very big and ulba is the membrane, which covers the embryo inside the uterus. In Atharva Veda the color of this layer has been called golden i.e. 'hiranyaya'. Comparing the Ozone layer to a membrane covering the embryo, it is clear that the function of this layer is the protection of earth. Disturbing this layer is equivalent to disturbing the membrane that covers the embryo inside a uterus.
The chemical-X to Sanitize Homes, Cow Ghee
Generally, Yagya mango bark is used as a fuel for the fire. But the Yagya we are going to focus on, is the “Agnihotra Yagya” which is used to Sanitize your home. For this the fuel used is cow dung cakes. I must assume that when I say cow, readers understand what I mean. By cow I mean the cow that has a a hump on its back. The cow which does not have hump i.e the hump-less cow is technically not a cow, it is a western Hybrid. Thus the Western species of a cow cannot be considered for thus Yagya. Why is this hump important? The hump of an Indian cow is its Surya nadi. Generally only humans are believed to have this nadi in their body, but cow is the only animal to have this nadi.
Tumblr media
This is the reason why a Cow’s milk is considered to be as good as a mother’s milk in India. Along with cow dung cakes you will need cow ghee. It is important to know the difference between butter oil and ghee. The basic difference is that ghee is made from curd and butter oil is made from the cream that we get from milk.
Tumblr media
Many people think that butter oil and ghee are same things but you should know that butter oil has a lot of harmful effects on the body while ghee, which is made from cow milk (A2 milk) does not harm the body in anyway. People with cholesterol problem can eat cow ghee in any quantity they want, but will never have any problem. But they cannot have butter oil as it can lead to serious health problems.
Tumblr media
The next thing you need is rice grains. You will only need a handful of them. The container in which the Yagya has to be performed is made with many technicalities. Just like any scientific process we should consider the rituals as a scientific process. Every step we take in these rituals are scientifically designed and have a deep meaning behind them. We should not perform them only for the sake of performing them, but should actually do it with complete dedication. Each and every step should be taken consciously. The shape of the container depends on the type of the task we want to perform in the Yagya. The metal of the container matters as well. In agnihotra yagya a container made from copper is used. Modern view of science has confirmed that copper is a good repellent of bacteria and viruses. Mind you copper is being used in this kind of Yagya since time immemorial. The next important thing to consider for performing this Yagya to sanitize your home is the timing of the Yagya. The Yagya should only be performed during the time of sunrise or sunset. The time should be very precise. There is a scientist from Germany who has done 40 years of research on Yagyas. He has designed a software 'Air' which will give you the timings of sunset and sunrise, of the whole year. The timing has to be very precise for performing this Yagya. Why is the time of sunrise or sunset so important? At sunset and sunrise there is a surge in the magnetic field of the earth, thus making it an auspicious time to perform this yagya. One important point to note here is that Yagya not only purifies the environment but also purifies the space of that area. When we say environment it means, the surrounding air and land. But when we say that it also purifiers the space of that area, we mean that it will also purify the Aura of that point of space in the entire universe. The technique of Yagya transcends multiple dimensions not only the physical one but the non-physical one as well. This Yagya to sanitize your home is only the tip of the Iceberg there are hundreds of types of Yagyas for attaining different types of goals.
Tumblr media
Now let’s come to the scientific aspect of this ritual and leave the metaphysical aspects. You must be thinking, that how can burning a few cow dung cakes with ghee purify environment. As discussed in the beginning, everything that we burn in fire mixes in the atmosphere as nano particles. Ghee is considered to be the purest substance in Vedic science. Read the full article

Why Do We Perform Agnihotra?
Shloka: Agnihotra eva tat sayam pratarvarvajram
Yajamano bharatrvyaya praharti |
Bhavatyatmana parasya bhratrvyo bhavati |
Meaning: The one who practices Agnihotra in the morning and evening becomes strong like thunderbolt/ diamond. Destroys enemies by himself (unassassinated). His enemies remain conquered.
Shloka: Yavadahoratre bhavatah | Tavadasya lokasya
nartih naristih | Nanto na paryantosti |
Meaning: As long as he does Agnihotra in the day and in the night, in this world for him there would no pain or misfortune. There will be no end to him. An Agnihotra practitioner will have a long life.
Source: Taittirya-brahmanam, Astakam 2, Anuvakah 5, 11 (Vedic period)
Theory behind Agnihotra
Agnihotra is a combination of two words Agni + hotra, in which agni means fire and hotra means healing. So Agnihotra is nothing but use of fire for healing. This tremendous ritual was first introduced by Brahmin priests in the Vedic period. Agnihotra was religiously followed in the ancient days. It is very necessary for us to practice Agnihotra frequently to save ourselves from the harmful pollutants that we encounter daily. Earth has become very dangerous just not for human beings but also for plants and animals too. There is environmental imbalance which is leading to new diseases day by day.
According to Vedas and the shlokas written in ancient scripts, Agnihotra was to be performed daily to maintain good health. It has the power to purify the air around us by killing harmful virus and bacteria. The materials used for performing Agnihotra were considered to be very auspicious.
Agnihotra is performed using the following materials
• Copper pyramid with a stand which holds the fire
• Rice taken in a small copper bowl
• Oil / butter / Ghee taken in a copper bowl along with copper spoon.
• Dried cow dung cakes.
• A collector or a jar to hold the ashes left over after the homa.
Agnihotra or homa is performed twice a day, one during sunrise and one during sunset. This homa is performed along with recitation of mantras. Reciting mantra is a very important part of performing homa as it gives a positive vibrations to the surrounding. These vibrations ail for better mental health. And dry rice grains are added to the fire as offering. After every mantra a small quantity of rice is put into the fire.
The copper pyramid is filled with cow dung at the bottom and towards the wall of the pyramid. The majority of the pyramid is filled with cow dung with a small empty space at the centre. Some wooden logs are put at the centre for which fire is lit. Ghee/ butter / oil is used as catalyst to keep the fire strong. If there are any chances of fire going off then ghee/ oil / butter is added to it to keep the fire on. There should be more smoke than the fire while performing it. The smoke given out by burning all these material are rich in components that aids in purification of air. And the ash residue left over is also very powerful. Consuming a small amount of ash daily is said to be a great immunity booster. And mixing it with the plant fertilisers help the plants to grow well without being affected by any diseases. It is also said that there will be no negative force attracted towards the person or the place where the homa is being performed.
It clearly shows that ancient Indians lived a very long, happy and healthy life because of the traditions they followed.

The Benefits of Cow Dungeon Cake.
Cow-dung cake is a popular product in India, which is used for religious purposes. It is often sold in packages of two to eight pieces, weighing about 200 grams (7 ounces). While it is not edible, it is an ideal organic fertilizer for gardens. Some sellers even market it for use in kitchen gardens.
Tumblr media
However, there are many risks associated with using cow dung cake. First, it can contain dangerous bacteria, which could cause infections in humans. Furthermore, there is the risk of exposure to bacteria and viruses. For this reason, cow-dung cake should only be consumed when it is dried. You can also use it as manure, pulverized and mixed with soil. Additionally, cow dung contains nutrients that can boost plant growth and improve the soil's health.
Cow-dung cakes are traditionally dried in the sun. They are useful in a number of ceremonies. In Indian pujas, cow-dung cakes are used for homes and Agnihotras. The dung cakes give off a purified atmosphere, which is perfect for ceremonies.
Cow dung cakes can be used as fertilizer for crops and gardens. When paired with ghee, they can also be used to clean the air. They are also used in religious ceremonies. In India, cow dung cakes are popular as natural fertilizer for plants. This substance is highly beneficial for the environment and can help improve air quality.
Cow dung cakes have a long history of use. In some regions, they are a traditional form of fuel. Women prepare these cakes in their villages. The cakes can provide up to two thousand kJ of energy and can also kill pathogens. In addition, it helps the environment by producing prana (oxygen).
Another important benefit of cow dung is its regenerative and medicinal value. When used on the skin, it improves blood circulation, removes dead skin cells, and has antibacterial properties. It also helps fight skin blemishes. Cow dung is also used in brick making. It is lighter than other bricks and is much cheaper. Moreover, it has many applications in the construction industry. This material is highly valued in India and makes a great export product.
Another application of cow dung cake is as fuel. It can be used to produce celluloid. However, when burnt, it releases organic air pollutants. This can lead to an increase in air pollution. This makes it an ideal fuel for rural households. This product is often used in developing countries, where there is a shortage of clean fuel sources.

Agnihotra is an ancient science given in Sanskrit language at the time of creation.Sanskrit is a language of vibration. The central part of the Agnihotra consists of making two offerings of brown rice (unpolished) into the fire exactly at,slightly before,or even after the time of sunset and sunrise, along with Vedic mantras that relate the fire and the sun to each other. Agnihotra is a Vedic yajna (ritual or sacrifice) performed in Hindu communities.
How to Perform Agnihotra Preparing the Fire (Start at least 5 minutes before the Agnihotra time) Place a flat piece of dried cow dung at the bottom of the copper pyramid. Arrange pieces of dried cow dung, which have been coated with ghee in the pyramid in such a manner as that allow air to pass. Apply a little ghee on the small piece of cow dung and light it. Insert this lighted piece of cow dung in the pyramid. Soon all the dung in the pyramid will catch fire. You may use a hand fan to help the flame. However, do not blow through the mouth to avoid bacteria from the mouth getting into the fire. Do not use any mineral oil or similar material to start the fire. At the exact time of sunrise and sunset when the offerings are made the fire should be fully ablaze in the pyramid. Agnihotra Process Take a few grains of rice in a dish or your left palm and apply a few drops of ghee. Exactly at sunrise utter the first Mantra and after the word SWAHA add a few grains of rice from your right hand (as little as you can hold in the pinch of your fingers will be sufficient) in the fire. Utter the second Mantra and after the word SWAHA add a few grains of rice from the right hand in the fire. At sunset do the same by using evening Mantras. Agnihotra Mantras are to be recited only once and only two offerings given at each Agnihotra performance. After each Agnihotra try to spare as many minutes as you can for meditation. You can sit quietly at least till the fire extinguishes itself. Agnihotra creates a medicinal and healing atmosphere. If possible the Agnihotra pyramid and the energy resulting from the Agnihotra process is best left undisturbed until the next Agnihotra time. Just before the next Agnihotra you can empty the ash using your right hand and store it in a bag, box, glass jar or clay pot. The ash from the Agnihotra fire is extremely medicinal. Effects of Agnihotra Homam: Purifies the air and surroundings The magnetic field created by Agnihotra homam neutralizes the negative energy and intensifies the ‘prana’ and positive energy Benefits circulatory system and purifies blood Renews brain cells Rejuvenates skin Offers nutrition to the plants Calms the mind and releases stress Contents: Copper Pot,Copper Dish,Copper Spoon,Copper Folk,Cow Dung Cake,Cow Pure Ghee,Gugal, Loban,Rice grains.

Many village homes are plastered with a mud/cow dung mixture, which insulates the walls and floors from extreme hot and cold temperatures. Cow dung is also rich in minerals and makes an excellent fertilizer. There is a big organic farming movement in India to return to ancient methods of utilizing cow dung to re-mineralize the depleted soil. In such a spiritual land as India, one can find religious ceremonies taking place at any time and any place. Spiritual “yagnas” are fire ceremonies that performed to thank the Gods and receive their blessings. Cows even play a central role in these fire yagnas or Agnihotras. Healing Earth with Agnihotra     May 2019
Tumblr media
There are a myriad of ways in which we can bring healing to the earth. One such way is to work with the subtle frequencies that were familiar to the ancestors of old. There is an ancient Vedic practice called Agnihotra that delivers an enhancing effect on the landscape by activating subtle energies in the atmosphere. I stumbled on this while researching the magnetic properties of the stone used to build the round towers of Ireland. The towers are made of paramagnetic rock that attracts beneficial cosmic energies, sending them into the ground and enhancing soil and plant quality.
In Agnihotra a ritual fire known as “Homa” is created that captures the subtle energies released by the sun in the morning and evening. Dried cow dung is covered in ghee and placed within an inverted copper pyramid of a specific size. The dung is lit and a small fire is created. A Sanskrit mantra is spoken while dropping an offering of rice and ghee into the fire at the exact moment of sunrise and sunset. The ritual takes about 10 minutes, during which time prana is drawn down from the solar range. This is said to enliven the atmosphere, neutralize pollutants and enhance the energy of the surrounding landscape. You can sit for at least 15 minutes beyond that and bathe in the healing frequencies. According to Vedic teacher, Shree Vasant Paranjpe, “Plant life is nourished and disease is removed from the area and tension is removed from the mind.”
In her book, Stone Age Farming, dowser, Alana Moore, writes, “Tests have been done with bacterium cultures in agar-agar. When exposed to the Agnihotra fires, the bacteria levels were reduced by 80%. The Homa practice is said to be effective even in radioactive contamination.”
The principle here is that if you heal the atmosphere the atmosphere will heal you. Many farms in India and beyond practice this ritual, which is known as “Homa farming.” The beneficial energies extend outwardly in a radius of .6 of a mile and upward into the atmosphere. The copper pyramid collects the healing energies from the sun and radiates them continuously until the next ceremony. It is widely believed by Vedic practitioners that organic substances burned in a copper vessel create purifying and harmonizing energies.
The ash is gathered before the next ritual and it holds the power of the Sanskrit mantra and all the beneficial energies that were created. This is a very medicinal substance and it can be mixed with water and sprayed on plants, sprinkled on and around trees as well as fields and garden beds, combined with ghee to make healing ointments, added to food, and boiled in water, strained and taken as a healing drink. An excellent book on making medicines with Agnihotra ash is titled, Homa Therapy: The Ancient Science of Healing by Monika Koch. You can download it for free here:
http://www.homatherapy.de/linked/buch_eng.pdf
This website provides the exact timing for the ceremony: https://www.agnihotra.org/how-to-perform-agnihotra/agnihotra-timings/
You'll need a clock that gives the seconds along with minutes or you can download an app to your phone.
This website sells the simple tools you’ll need to practice the ritual including the dried cow dung:
https://agnihotrasupplies.com/
I have been practicing Agnihotra consistently at sunrise and sunset for the past 6 weeks. I’ve created an altar table on my east-facing porch where I sit by the fire and meditate to the sound of birdsongs. My weekly retreat clients are now joining me for the ritual and a couple of them have gone home to continue the practice themselves.
One of my recent retreat clients was still recovering from a parasite she picked up in Mexico that almost killed her over the fall. Her stomach was threatening to keep her up through the night with diarrhea so I made the ash water by boiling 2 liters of water and a tablespoon of Agnihotra ash then straining it through a coffee filter. She drank a cup of the water and to her utter astonishment her stomach settled within an hour and she slept through the night with no problems. She drank the ash water daily and left my home with extra ash to keep on hand.
I am quite taken by this beautiful ritual and its resultant medicine, and I will continue the practice when I move to Vermont. I trust the ancients far more than I trust our corporate-run media “authorities.” Earth’s people have been seduced away from what was once a common understanding of the subtle frequencies of nature and how to work with them. It is my hope that more people will be inspired to explore beyond the boundaries of our “modern” education and humbly call back the ancestral wisdom that so beautifully maintained and cultivated balance and harmony.
Slainte mhor agus a h-uile beannachd duibh! (Gaelic)
