Teacher to rockstar | K.K. Shailaja on her new book âMy Life as a Comradeâ
It is my experience that interviewees are rarely interested in you. Occasionally, at the end of the meeting, they may lean back and ask a couple of cursory questions about your work. But, on a Wednesday evening at the Kerala House in Delhi, K.K. Shailaja had barely walked into the room before I was peppered with half a dozen questions. Where was I from, what did my parents do, do I have children,âŠ

In India, experts said symptoms attributed to long Covid such as fatigue and concentration issues may overlap with common paediatric conditions like stress, anaemia, or viral syndromes, leading to underreporting
Children experience weakened immunity and bacterial infections after suffering from long Covid-19 syndrome, a study published in the medical journal Nature has revealed.
Persistent fatigue was the most common symptom in children with long Covid syndrome, while the majority of children often complained about anxiety.
The study conducted in Budapest, Hungary, investigated children affected by long Covid. The researchers found significant differences in their immune function, which they believe were caused by the Covid-19 infection.
âNeutrophil dysfunction in children with Long Covid syndrome (LCS) may be part of the disease pathogenesis or a predisposing factor," concluded the authors of the study published on November 27.
The researchers focused on a type of white blood cell called neutrophils, which plays a crucial role in combating infections, particularly bacterial ones. They discovered that children with long Covid had neutrophils that were functionally impaired.
âFor instance, their ability to attack and swallow harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus was impaired. This might correlate with the rise of multiple bacterial infections that were reported in Western nations among children after the onset of the pandemic," explained Rajeev Jayadevan, chairman, research cell, at the Indian Medical Associationâs Kerala wing.
âAfter an expected drop following lockdowns, Group A streptococcal infection among younger children had surged in 2022, some of which turned severe. Whether this immune dysfunction accompanying long Covid was responsible for these additional infections is unclear."
What does the study say? To enhance the accuracy, the authors included both healthy children and those who had recovered without complications from Covid-19. Among the children with long Covid, seven of 10 experienced fatigue, while half had a loss of interest and difficulty concentrating. There was no difference in long Covid symptoms between vaccinated and unvaccinated children.
Long Covid Syndrome (LCS) children experienced significantly more symptoms, impairing their quality of life and functioning compared to CG+ group or convalescent children who have recovered from something like a febrile illness.
âNeutrophilic granulocyte dysfunction was found in LCS children, with decreased superoxide-producing activity and phagocytosis compared to CG+. The number of children with LCS complaints correlated significantly with altered neutrophil effector functions," said the study titled âLong COVID syndrome in children: neutrophilic granulocyte dysfunction and its correlation with disease severityâ.
Neutrophilic granulocyte dysfunction is a problem with a specific type of white blood cells called neutrophils, which are important for fighting infections. These neutrophils are called granulocytes because they contain granules that help them destroy pathogens.
The neutrophils in children with LCS produce less of a molecule called superoxide, which is a chemical used by neutrophils to kill bacteria and other pathogens. Hence, it means that these neutrophils are less effective at destroying and cracking down on harmful invaders like bacteria.
When compared to the CG+ control group who did not have long Covid, their neutrophils did not show these problems.
The number of children with LCS complaints correlated significantly with altered neutrophil effector functions, which means that the severity or presence of symptoms in children with long Covid was closely related to the dysfunction of these neutrophil activities (superoxide production and phagocytosis). In other words, the more severe the symptoms of long Covid, the more likely there was an issue with the neutrophilsâ ability to perform these critical immune functions.
However, in India, experts said they are not encountering many such cases in their clinical practice.
âWe are not encountering such cases in large numbers. It likely reflects the low prevalence or a shift in disease dynamics," said Dr Maninder Dhaliwal, an expert in paediatric pulmonology at NCR-based Amrita Hospital.
âAnother side to the story is that symptoms attributed to long Covid (e.g. fatigue, concentration issues) may overlap with common paediatric conditions like stress, anaemia, or viral syndromes, leading to maybe underreporting."
However, doctors pointed out that this study doesnât translate to actionable diagnostic tools, therapeutic strategies, or preventive measures, but seems currently to serve more as academic knowledge.
âHowever, for children presenting with lingering fatigue, brain fog, or other long Covid symptoms, this knowledge may prompt closer monitoring or referral to the right specialists (e.g., immunology, neurology)," Dhaliwal added.

Maybe this has something to do with it
MARUTHONKARA, India: It was more than two weeks before doctors even realised what they were treating, the fourth outbreak in five years of the lethal, brain-swelling Nipah virus in Indiaâs Kerala region. By then, hundreds of people had been exposed to the bat pathogen.
Halting the diseaseâs spread required deploying an army of workers, who put this village and eight others on partial lockdown for two weeks, surveyed more than 53,000 houses for signs of illness and tracked down 1,200 people who had come into contact with infected patients, according to the World Health Organization.
Ultimately, six people were infected, and two of them died. Though Keralaâs response to contain the outbreak drew international praise, the quick spread of the virus and its impact on tens of thousands of people illustrate what many scientists and world health leaders say is a weakness in public health policy: relying solely on disease containment. Governments, they say, must also control land development and protect animal habitats in areas where there is high risk of pathogens leaping from animals to people, a phenomenon known as spillover.
[...]
Reporters compared ecological conditions across the globe from 2002 through 2020 with those that existed at the time of past spillovers, identifying 9 million sq km â covering 6% of the Earthâs land mass â where conditions were ripe for pathogens to jump from bats to humans. Nearly 1.8 billion people lived in those jump zones in 2020, an increase of 57% since 2002.
The analysis focused on bats because they are linked to many of the deadliest disease outbreaks of the past half century, including the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Though its specific source is still unknown, the virus that causes Covid-19 is related to coronaviruses found in some horseshoe bats, a type common in tropical Asia. Kerala is one of the likeliest places on earth for spillover to occur, the analysis showed.
[...]
Nipah, which comes from bats and causes a lethal, brain-swelling fever in humans, has been linked to the deaths of two dozen people in Kerala since its first, surprise appearance here in 2018. A 1998-1999 epidemic in Malaysia killed at least 105. Hundreds more have died in near-annual outbreaks in Bangladesh since 2001. Nipah is classified as a priority pathogen by the WHO because of its potential to trigger an epidemic. There is no vaccine to prevent infection and no treatment to cure it.
edit: I guess not if the ban is months old
seriously, what the fuck is this about?
they've just outright banned the tag for an indian state that's home to over 34 million people

The art of creating book covers
âNever judge a book by its cover,â goes the popular English idiom. Contrary to this axiom, judging a book by its cover design is a guilty pleasure all self-confessed bibliophiles and book lovers have indulged in at some point or the other.
Book covers have a way of calling out to us â begging us to pick up a book and leisurely leaf through its contents or sneak a glance at the blurb on the back. Whether it is a strategically placed color-blocked graphic design, seemingly innocent play with elements of typography, doodle renditions, captivating visual pictographs or illustrations that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye â book jackets command attention and how! An exceptional and eye-catching cover design is the subliminal force behind subtle book recall and its ensuing success, in most cases.
A lot of innovation and creativity is happening, says Ravi Deecee, CEO of DC Books, adding the Kerala-based publisher has experimented with book covers. âWe try to work with creative individuals to add that edge to our cover designs,â he said, adding they hold discussions with the in-house team of artists and illustrators and brainstorm on how to make the covers stand out.
Govind DeeCee, editorial director of DC Books, said they have done multiple campaigns on YouTube. During the Covid-19 pandemic, 23 April 2020, DC Books was one of the first publishers to do a virtual book festival online with live discussions with authors on Facebook and YouTube.
âWe did an interesting exercise on YouTube where we conducted a workshop with authors who were in the process of writing their novels. We discussed how we could shape the novels that they were writing into a printable manuscript,â Govind said. âWe paired them up with an author and asked each one to contribute a chapter. The author contributed the initial chapter. The other chapters were contributed by each of the authors in the following episodes with DC Books doing the editing to maintain consistency. The author who started the series contributed the last chapter.â
DC Books compiled a crime story based on this exercise where they had one established writer and nine upcoming authors who hadn't been published. Every day on YouTube, DC Books would release one chapter of this compilation. The exercise went on for three weeks with each author reading his or her chapter. The book was ultimately published with a letter from the original contributing author, which was not published on YouTube. That book did very well, Govind DeeCee said.
For the Malayalam edition (Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil) of On The Banks of the Mayyazhi by M Mukundan, which was originally published in 1974, and turned 50 this year, they did an interesting exercise â publishing 1,000 copies with a blank cover and just the title of the book at the top in the year 2018. Each copy had a unique hand-painted cover. All the covers were connected to the text within the book. The collector's editions were a hit with readers, Govind Deecee said. They experimented with a lot of covers for this book and finally landed on one.
Another book, Thalamurakal by OV Vijayan, originally published in 1991-1992, had unique covers. The designs were made by physical materials embossed on a printed cover, âThe process of designing a cover is a conversation in itself. We have a good design team and also rely on external designers and illustrators. We have conversations with the designers so that we can evolve a cover. For some of the bestsellers, we have the mantra â don't change the cover unless you have to,â Govind Deecee said.
âWe designed a book cover for the Malayalam translation of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. We wanted a gothic font for the title of the book in Malayalam and we went to the extent of creating a typography for the text in gothic font,â he shared.
Another interesting project was for the Malayalam translation of the book Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa. In 2022, DC Books did a unique project with one of its bestselling authors, Benyamin, where the chapters of the novel could be read in any order and one could still understand it, Ravi Deecee said. âTo make it even more fun, we made the book with 120 chapters with each chapter being a single page or two sides of the page at the most.â
âWe created a box that opens like a book and in it, we placed 120 chapters of Tharakan's Grandhavari as individually printed cards. We made sure every copy coming out of the press had a unique arrangement of chapters so that no two copies would be similar,â Ravi said. DC Books did one edition of 4,000 books in that format and all 4,000 copies were preordered and sold in one month. âIf we can lend the design to the structure that the author wants, we will go that distance,â he concluded.

The Future of Project Management in Kerala: Trends and Innovations in PMC Services
Kerala, known for its progressive mindset and rapid infrastructure development, is experiencing a surge in the demand for expert project management services. Project Management Consultancy in Kerala has evolved to become a cornerstone for ensuring successful project execution across diverse sectors such as construction, IT, real estate, and manufacturing. With technological advancements and a growing emphasis on sustainability, the future of project management in the state looks both exciting and transformative.
Embracing Technology in Project Management
One of the most significant trends shaping the future of PMC services in Kerala is the integration of advanced technologies. Tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) are becoming indispensable in project management. BIM, for example, allows consultants to visualize, plan, and manage projects more effectively by creating detailed 3D models. AI-powered analytics help predict potential risks and optimize resource allocation, while IoT devices ensure real-time monitoring of project progress and equipment efficiency.
These technological innovations not only enhance the accuracy and efficiency of project execution but also foster better communication among stakeholders, reducing delays and cost overruns. For a state like Kerala, with its unique blend of urban and rural projects, these tools are game-changers in achieving project goals.
Focus on Sustainability and Green Practices
Kerala has always been at the forefront of sustainable initiatives, and this trend is strongly influencing the PMC sector. The demand for eco-friendly construction and sustainable project practices is growing, driven by both government regulations and conscious clients. Project management consultancies are now incorporating energy-efficient designs, renewable materials, and waste management systems into their projects.
Moreover, many PMCs are adopting green certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) to align with global standards. By prioritizing sustainability, PMC services in Kerala not only contribute to environmental conservation but also enhance the long-term value of the projects they manage.
The Rise of Remote Project Management
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote work and digital collaboration tools, a trend that is here to stay. Virtual project management platforms have enabled consultants to monitor progress, communicate with teams, and address issues without being physically present on-site. This shift has been particularly beneficial in Kerala, where diverse terrains and geographic challenges can make frequent site visits impractical.
Remote project management tools, coupled with cloud-based document sharing and video conferencing, are making the entire process more flexible and accessible. This trend is expected to grow further, with advanced virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tools offering immersive project visualization and planning experiences.
Enhancing Skills and Expertise
As the scope of project management expands, the need for skilled professionals is more critical than ever. PMCs in Kerala are investing in upskilling their teams to stay ahead of industry demands. Training in cutting-edge tools, certifications in global project management standards, and a focus on soft skills like communication and leadership are all part of the evolution.
The Road Ahead
The future of PMC in Kerala is marked by innovation, sustainability, and adaptability. As the state continues to develop its infrastructure and embrace new industries, project management consultancies will play a pivotal role in shaping Keralaâs growth story. By leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, these consultancies are not just managing projects; they are building a foundation for a better tomorrow.

Leadership Lessons from IAS Officers During Crisis Situations
In times of crisis, the leadership displayed by Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers becomes crucial. Whether dealing with natural disasters, public health emergencies, or socio-economic challenges, these officers are at the forefront of managing and mitigating the impacts of such situations. Their training, decision-making abilities, and crisis management skills often draw from their rigorous preparation at esteemed institutions, such as the IAS academy in Coimbatore. This blog explores the essential leadership lessons gleaned from the experiences of IAS officers during crisis situations, shedding light on how they can effectively navigate through uncertainty while maintaining public trust and ensuring the welfare of citizens.
1. The Importance of Preparedness
One of the fundamental lessons from IAS officers during crises is the significance of preparedness. In the face of emergencies, those who have undergone extensive training, like that offered at the IAS academy in Coimbatore, often demonstrate a level of readiness that sets them apart. Preparedness involves not only having contingency plans in place but also ensuring that all team members understand their roles and responsibilities. This proactive approach can significantly reduce response time and improve the effectiveness of interventions.
Case Study: Flood Management in Kerala
During the devastating floods in Kerala in 2018, IAS officers were instrumental in coordinating rescue and relief efforts. Their preparedness, honed through various training modules, enabled them to swiftly mobilize resources, establish command centers, and communicate effectively with multiple agencies. The result was a structured response that minimized chaos and maximized assistance to those in need.
2. Decisive Action
Crisis situations often demand quick and decisive action. IAS officers are trained to analyze situations rapidly and make informed decisions based on available data. This decisiveness is critical in averting further complications and ensuring that resources are allocated where they are most needed.
Example: Handling the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many IAS officers had to make split-second decisions regarding lockdown measures, resource distribution, and healthcare management. Their ability to act decisively, guided by data from health experts and scientific research, played a vital role in curbing the virus's spread. Officers from the IAS academy in Coimbatore were particularly adept at implementing measures that balanced public health concerns with economic stability.
3. Effective Communication
Communication is a cornerstone of effective leadership during crises. IAS officers must convey critical information to the public, coordinate with various stakeholders, and maintain transparency. Clear communication can help to prevent panic, build trust, and encourage compliance with directives.
Example: The Role of Social Media
The use of social media platforms by IAS officers during crises has transformed how information is disseminated. For instance, during the COVID-19 crisis, many officers utilized social media to update citizens about health protocols, vaccination drives, and safety measures. Their proactive communication strategies often mirrored the principles taught in the IAS academy in Coimbatore, where effective communication is emphasized as a key leadership skill.
4. Empathy and Compassion
Leadership during crises is not just about making decisions; itâs also about understanding and empathizing with the affected populations. IAS officers often find themselves in positions where they must advocate for vulnerable groups, ensuring their needs are addressed. Demonstrating empathy fosters a sense of community and reassures citizens that their leaders care about their well-being.
Case Study: Response to Natural Disasters
In response to natural disasters, IAS officers frequently engage with local communities to assess their needs directly. For example, during the Uttarakhand floods in 2013, officers were seen working alongside volunteers, distributing aid, and listening to the concerns of affected individuals. Such actions reflect the values instilled during their training at the IAS academy in Coimbatore, which emphasizes the importance of servant leadership.
5. Collaboration and Teamwork
No crisis can be effectively managed in isolation. IAS officers often work in collaboration with other government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations. This spirit of teamwork is crucial for pooling resources, sharing expertise, and ensuring a comprehensive response to crises.
Example: Multi-Agency Response to Cyclones
During cyclone responses, IAS officers coordinate efforts between various departments, such as meteorology, disaster management, and local law enforcement. Their ability to foster collaboration among these entities ensures a streamlined response that maximizes efficiency and impact. The principles of teamwork learned at the IAS academy in Coimbatore play a vital role in such collaborative efforts.
6. Adaptability and Innovation
The dynamic nature of crises often necessitates adaptability and innovative solutions. IAS officers are trained to think critically and creatively, enabling them to devise unique approaches to emerging challenges. This flexibility is vital in situations where conventional methods may not suffice.
Example: Innovative Solutions in Healthcare
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many IAS officers implemented innovative solutions to ensure the swift distribution of medical supplies and vaccination. For instance, in certain states, mobile vaccination units were deployed to reach remote areas, showcasing the ability of IAS officers to adapt to changing circumstances. Such creativity is a hallmark of the rigorous training at the IAS academy in Coimbatore, which encourages out-of-the-box thinking.
7. Building Public Trust
Maintaining public trust is essential for effective crisis management. IAS officers must demonstrate integrity, transparency, and accountability to inspire confidence among citizens. Their leadership style, shaped by their experiences and training, plays a pivotal role in how the public perceives government actions during crises.
Example: Transparency in COVID-19 Communication
During the pandemic, transparency in sharing data regarding infection rates, vaccination numbers, and health guidelines helped build trust between citizens and government officials. IAS officers who openly communicated challenges and successes gained public support, demonstrating the significance of trust in governance. The emphasis on ethical leadership is a core aspect taught at the IAS academy in Coimbatore, guiding officers in their interactions with the public.
8. Post-Crisis Evaluation
After a crisis has passed, evaluating the response is crucial for learning and improvement. IAS officers are often involved in conducting thorough assessments to identify what worked, what didnât, and how future responses can be enhanced. This reflective practice is essential for evolving governance structures and processes.
Example: Learning from Past Disasters
Post-disaster evaluations conducted by IAS officers have led to significant improvements in response mechanisms. For instance, lessons learned from the Kerala floods led to enhanced flood management strategies and community preparedness initiatives. These reflective practices align with the training received at the IAS academy in Coimbatore, where continuous improvement is emphasized.
Conclusion
The leadership lessons drawn from IAS officers during crisis situations provide valuable insights into effective governance. Their preparedness, decisiveness, communication skills, empathy, collaboration, adaptability, focus on building trust, and commitment to evaluation exemplify what effective leadership entails in challenging circumstances. Training at institutions like the IAS academy in Coimbatore equips these officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle crises head-on, ultimately benefiting the communities they serve.
As we continue to face various challenges, understanding and implementing these leadership lessons will be crucial in building resilient societies capable of overcoming adversity. The insights gained from the experiences of IAS officers can guide current and future leaders in navigating crises with confidence and compassion, ensuring the welfare of all citizens.

Agritourism Market: Current Analysis and Forecast (2024-2032)
In India, agritourism market is a growing industry that combines tourism and agriculture to give guests an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience of rural life. This developing sector has many chances for environmental education, cultural preservation, and economic growth. We explore the latest data, emerging patterns, and prospects for agritourism in India in this blog.
The Agritourism Landscape in India
India, with its rich agricultural heritage and diverse landscapes, is well-positioned to leverage agritourism. The concept involves tourists visiting working farms, ranches, or any agricultural operation for enjoyment, education, or active involvement in the activities of the farm. From farm stays to hands-on farming experiences, the sector offers a variety of attractions.
Recent Statistics and Market Trends
The Ministry of Tourism's 2023 annual report highlights the increasing interest in rural and agritourism. It notes that domestic tourism in rural areas is growing, supported by government initiatives like the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, which aims to develop theme-based tourist circuits that include rural and agritourism sites. The Indian government has launched several campaigns to promote agritourism, recognizing its potential to boost rural economies, provide additional income streams for farmers, and offer unique tourism experiences. Here are some recent initiatives:
Swadesh Darshan Scheme: This scheme, launched by the Ministry of Tourism, aims to develop theme-based tourist circuits across India, including rural and agritourism circuits. It provides financial support to state governments to develop the necessary infrastructure to support these tourism circuits, thereby promoting agritourism as part of a broader strategy to enhance rural tourism.
PRASHAD Scheme: The Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) also supports the development of rural and agritourism by enhancing tourist infrastructure around spiritual and pilgrimage sites, many of which are located in rural areas. This indirectly boosts agritourism by attracting more visitors to rural regions.
Kerala Agri Tourism Network: Initiated by the Kerala State Government, this network aims to boost farm tourism post-COVID-19 by providing training and support to farmers. It helps them create agritourism experiences that attract tourists, thereby supplementing their income and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
Maharashtra Agritourism Policy: Maharashtra has been a pioneer in agritourism in India. The state government, with the help of the Agri Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), has formulated policies to promote agritourism. One significant initiative mandates educational trips to farms for school students, helping inculcate an appreciation for agriculture from a young age. This policy aims to reach nearly one crore students across the state.
Key Drivers of Agritourism Growth
Government Support and Policies: The Indian government has been proactive in promoting agritourism through various schemes and policies. The Kerala State Government's Kerala Agri Tourism Network and training programs to boost farm tourism post-COVID-19 are notable examples. Such initiatives provide the necessary infrastructure and support to farmers and rural communities, encouraging them to participate in the tourism sector.
Growing Consumer Interest: There is a rising consumer interest in unique travel experiences that offer a break from conventional tourism. Farm stays, where visitors can engage in daily farm activities, have gained popularity. For instance, Airbnb reported a significant increase in searches for farm stays, highlighting a shift in traveler preferences towards more immersive and sustainable tourism experiences.
Economic Diversification: Agritourism offers farmers an additional revenue stream, helping them diversify their income. This is particularly beneficial during off-seasons or periods of low agricultural yield. The agritourism sector supports rural economies by attracting tourists who spend on local goods and services, thereby boosting local businesses and employment.
Cultural and Environmental Education: Agritourism plays a crucial role in educating visitors about sustainable farming practices, local culture, and the importance of environmental conservation. It provides an opportunity for urban dwellers to reconnect with nature and understand the origins of their food.
Opportunities in Agritourism
Farm Stays and Rural Accommodations: Offering comfortable accommodations on farms allows tourists to experience rural life firsthand. These stays can be complemented with activities such as milking cows, harvesting crops, or cooking traditional meals.
Farm-to-Table Dining: Agritourism can capitalize on the farm-to-table movement by offering fresh, locally-sourced meals. This not only provides a unique dining experience but also supports local farmers and reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.
Educational Tours and Workshops: Organizing educational tours and workshops can attract schools, families, and individuals interested in learning about agriculture. These activities can include farm tours, gardening workshops, and classes on sustainable farming techniques.
Adventure and Recreational Activities: Incorporating adventure activities like hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching can attract a broader audience. These activities provide additional entertainment options for tourists and enhance their overall experience.

Challenges and Regulatory Hurdles
Despite the promising potential, the agritourism sector in India faces several challenges, primarily related to regulatory hurdles. Zoning laws and agricultural regulations can be complex and vary by region, making it difficult for farmers to obtain necessary permits for tourism activities. Additionally, compliance with health and safety standards, such as those outlined in the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations, can be demanding and require significant investment.
Future Prospects
The future of agritourism in India looks promising, with continued government support and growing consumer interest. As the sector matures, we can expect more innovative offerings that cater to diverse tourist preferences. Emphasizing sustainability and community involvement will be key to ensuring the long-term success of agritourism.
Conclusion
Agritourism in India presents a unique opportunity to blend agriculture with tourism, offering economic, cultural, and environmental benefits. With the right support and strategic development, this sector can play a significant role in rural development and sustainable tourism. As travelers seek more authentic and meaningful experiences, agritourism stands ready to meet this demand and flourish in the coming years.
