UK-Mauritius Treaty on Chagos Archipelago
Context: The United Kingdom on Thursday (October 3) said it would cede sovereignty of the strategically important Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling it a “historic political agreement”. The UK has long controlled Chagos and the Diego Garcia military base located there, jointly operating it with the United States. Sovereignty Transfer: On October 3, 2024, the UK agreed to cede sovereignty of…

hi besties I need some advice. So there’s this university I applied to in the early admissions cycle and when I got the invitation they said that if I was “not shortlisted in this cycle, I could apply again in the regular admissions cycle.”
After applying I was shortlisted for interview for one of the uni’s scholar programmes I applied to (the degree I applied to doesn’t have an interview, that’s only for scholarships/scholar programmes etc) and I had my interview one day after the regular admissions cycle opened.
it’s been one week since the regular admissions cycle opened and I haven’t heard anything from them, and I’ve only got a little less than 3 weeks until the regular admissions cycle also closes. No where in their email did they state how/when they would inform if I’ve been accepted/rejected from the uni or the scholars programme I applied to, so now my dilemma is:
Do I just take it that I’ve been rejected from both the uni and scholar programme by default? My interview wasn’t the best so I get it if I’m being rejected from the scholars programme but I should at least get into the uni?? Cuz like why would they go through the effort of shortlisting me for the scholars prog if I wasn’t even going to be accepted into the uni? And also if my grades/essays were good enough to get me shortlisted for the scholars prog surely they would be good enough to get me accepted for my degree??? (Early admissions is based on prelim grades and I literally got only 1 B in a subject that’s so unrelated to the course I’m applying for)
do I email them to ask? My parents think I should but that’s just generally stressful and not a fun time for anyone but also I feel like it’s basic decency to let me know if I’ve been accepted/rejected, esp since the regular admissions are ongoing? Since they said I could reapply in the regular cycle that sort of implies that I would know their decision by then, but also my interview for the scholars programme was one day after the regular cycle opened and idk how long they’ll take to make their decision but also their regular cycle closed on 19 March???? So what then?????????
pls help if anyone has any nuggets of wisdom, I’m kind of peeved w this uni cuz it’s pretty good but also I think it should be basic decency to tell me if I’ve been accepted or not esp since the regular cycle is open, or at the very least say smth like “if you don’t hear from us by this date, your application might have been unsuccessful” and on top of that THEY know when they’re done processing my application, I don’t, so why should I have to email them?? If they’ve come to a decision they can tell me!! I’m just shooting in the dark here w my email shxnxkkxkx
#any and all help/advice is appreciated 🙏#I feel like they’re acting like they’re too good to get back to me#Well 2 can play that game! Maybe IM too good for YOU!#pls help besties idk if im being too prideful/lazy here sjmxlxlsmd#It’s just that the regular admissions cycle is exactly the same as the early admissions application#The only difference would be me submitting all As instead of 3 As and 1 B like last time#Which is so infuriating!!! All As isn’t even a prerequisite for the course!!!! (Allegedly)

2024 Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song Final
TAGGING (observers, participants, and non-participants):
@addaellis, @birdsongvelvet, @cinemaocd, @cokwong, @demenshah, @doglvr, @dog-of-ulthar, @emilylime5, @halfwaythruthedark, @idontknowmuchaboutmovies, @machpowervisions, @maximiliani, @memetoilet, @metamatar, @monkeysmadeofcheese, @myluckyerror, @phendranaedge, @plus-low-overthrow, @rawberry101, @shootingstarvenator, @stephdgray, @theybecomestories, @umgeschrieben, and @yellanimal!
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the business end of the Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (MOABOS).
A good day to you wherever you are reading this, whether as a participant or non-participating observer. It was a robustly-done preliminary with a record-tying number of folks participating in this year's preliminary round. But in the last four years, twice there has been a strange decline of participants from prelim to final. Can we stave that off this year?
As many of you know, this is the twelfth edition of MOABOS (MOABOS XII) and the eleventh with participation from family, friends, and tumblr followers. On January 1 every year, I never know whether or not MOABOS will return for another edition. Who knows how many original songs you encounter during the year ahead? Sometimes I know there'll be another edition of MOABOS as early as the spring; sometimes not until deep into the summer/early autumn. That MOABOS continues – and grows – has been personally gratifying. And it is not possible without all of you.
Record-keeping for MOABOS XII began on New Year's Day 2024. The first song to be recorded was "My Sweet Baby" from Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023). That song ultimately did not make it to the MOABOS preliminary round. The song that remained on my MOABOS masterlist the longest was "I've Been Kissed Before" from Affair in Trinidad (1952). I finished Affair in Trinidad on January 20, 2024. 333 days later, "I've Been Kissed Before" has survived multiple rounds of deletions and additions to the MOABOS masterlist to make the preliminary round. It survived the preliminary round and will now contest this final.
INTRODUCTION
For those who have never participated in this before, my classic movie blog (a tumblr) traditionally ends the year by honoring some of the best achievements from movies that I saw for the first time that calendar year (the "Movie Odyssey", in which any rewatches do not count) with an Oscar-like ceremony (this link takes you to 2023's ceremony). I choose all the nominees and winners from each category except for this, Best Original Song. Original Song is the only category which does not require you to watch the movies in their entirety. As always, MOABOS is considered a sort of cinematic-musical thank-you for your moral support in various ways over how long I've known you for. In addition, I think it's a fun, novel way to introduce to all of you films and music you may not have otherwise encountered or sought and to give everyone a little bit of film and music history.
However, as fun as this is, please realize that MOABOS is only a foot-deep glimpse into my much larger Movie Odyssey for this last year. There are many films I saw this calendar year that I consider much better than the ones that appear here. But because they did not contain a single original song, they have no presence here.
WHAT'S IN THE FINAL
Sixteen songs have made the 2024 Movie Odyssey for Best Original Song Final.
In a preliminary round without a prohibitive on-paper favorite, the competition in the preliminary round was open, very competitive, and remained in doubt even in the final hours.
A record seven languages will be represented for the MOABOS final. This matches last year's record. The languages involved are English, Cantonese, French, Hindi, Latin, Spanish, and Vietnamese. This breaks the record held by last year's MOABOS XI (2023), which featured six different languages. Cantonese makes its MOABOS Final debut, while French will have multiple songs competing in the Final for the first time ever. Latin makes its first appearance since John Williams' "Exsultate Justi" from Empire of the Sun (1987), which finished 13th place at MOABOS VIII (2020).
Two major figures from Old Hollywood make a rare MOABOS foray. This will be Rita Hayworth's first MOABOS since MOABOS V (2017) – "I'm Old Fashioned" from You Were Never Lovelier (1942), which did not receive a nomination. And here's another MOABOS V connection, and he's also connected to "I'm Old Fashioned", too. Since MOABOS V, poor Fred Astaire has been on the receiving end of multiple preliminary round eliminations and this will be his first Final since a 9th place finish for "Bonjour, Paris!" from Funny Face (1957).Two movies have multiple entries here in the final round and will be hoping vote-splitting does not rear its head. Awaara (1951, India) and Mars Express (2023, France) are the only two movies with multiple candidates in an extremely varied final – chronologically, culturally, musically, stylistically.
2024's winner will join this company (winners' playlist):
2012 (Special): To be contested
2013 (I): “The Gold Diggers’ Song (We’re In the Money)”, Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
2014 (II): “Rainbow Connection”, The Muppet Movie (1979)
2015 (III): “Amhrán Na Farraige (Song of the Sea)”, Song of the Sea (2014)
2016 (IV): “Stayin’ Alive”, Saturday Night Fever (1977)
2017 (V): “Remember Me (Recuérdame)”, Coco (2017)
2018 (VI): “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing”, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955)
2019 (VII): “I Wish I Didn't Love You So”, The Perils of Pauline (1947)
2020 (VIII): “Can't Help Falling in Love” , Blue Hawaii (1961)
2021 (IX): “Lullaby in Ragtime”, The Five Pennies (1959) 2022 (X): “9 to 5”, Nine to Five (1980)
2023 (XI): “Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)”, The Color Purple (1985)
INSTRUCTIONS
Please rank (#1-16) your choices in order. The top ten songs will receive nominations; all others get "Honorable Mentions". Unlike the preliminary round, there is no minimum or maximum number of songs you can rank. You can rank all of them if you wish and, yes, you can also show no evidence that you listened to anything else and rank a solitary song.
For those tempted to rank only one or a small handful of songs, a warning to you. Because of the nature of single transferable vote (the tabulation method described in the "Read More", and a simplified visual example is here), it is strongly recommended to rank as many songs as possible, rather than only one or two. Those who rank fewer songs run a greater risk of their ballots being discarded in the later rounds of tabulation.
Since this rule change (first implemented in MOABOS VI in 2018), no participant who has only ranked one song has seen their choice win MOABOS. Again, this is all described in the "PS".
Your rankings are due on Sunday, January 5 at 9 PM Pacific. That is also 7 PM Hawaii/Aleutian Time and 11 PM Central. This deadline is also Monday, January 6 at Midnight Eastern Time / 5 AM GMT / 6 AM CET / 7 AM EET / 12 PM Indochina Time / 1 PM Taipei Time.
The tabulation method used in the preliminary round (10 points for 1st place, 9 points for 2nd, etc.) is being used for this round. However, it is used for the final only as the second tiebreaker (the tabulation method that will be used principally for the final – aka "single transferable vote" – is described in the "Read More").
For those who have asked, here's a YouTube playlist with all of the below. However, all MOABOS entries are meant to be watched as much as they are to be listened to.
And now, the songs... "Song title", composer and lyricist, Film Title (release year):
2024 Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song Final (playlist)
“Amor de Gitano (The Love of a Gypsy)”, music and lyrics by Morris Stoloff and Fred Karger, The Loves of Carmen (1948)
Performed by Rita Hayworth
Lyrics in Spanish (rough translation)
2nd in Group A
In this adaptation of Prosper Mérimée's novella Carmen (which also served as the source material for Georges Bizet's opera Carmen), this number appears late in the film after the turbulent relationship between Carmen (Hayworth; whose character is Romani) and Don José (Glenn Ford) of the Spanish dragoons. At this point, Carmen has escaped her earlier poverty (and Don José) and is now living comfortably in Córdoba as the partner of a bullfighter.
Hayworth, an actress of Spanish Romani and Irish/English descent, began her career in minor roles at 20th Century Fox before moving to Columbia. While at Columbia, she became the studio's top star and a pin-up icon to American soldiers in WWII. Despite frequent clashes with chief executive Harry Cohn over roles and pay (contracted Hollywood actors had little freedom to choose their roles until the 1944 court case De Havilland v. Warner Bros.), she single-handedly catapulted Columbia into financial stability for years to come, dashing any remaining beliefs that Columbia was not a major studio. The Loves of Carmen was to be her final film for Columbia, due to her impending marriage to Prince Aly Khan (they divorced, and she came back).
“Aren’t You Glad You’re You?”, music by Jimmy Van Heusen, lyrics by Johnny Burke, The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945)
(in-film version) / (soundtrack version)
Performed by Bing Crosby
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song
4th in Group B
In this sequel to the Best Picture-winning musical Going My Way (1944), Crosby (at the height of his career) reprises his Oscar-winning role as Father O'Malley, who has just been transferred to a big city parish and to oversee its underfunded, nun-run private school. One student, Patsy (Joan Carroll), has been dropped off there by her financially unstable single mother. While seeking for advice about a writing assignment one night, Father O'Malley urges Patsy – who has not been fitting in at school – to be herself and approach the essay uniquely, leading to this song. Quoted a few times in the film's score. The soundtrack version and all covers are usually a lot more upbeat than the original.
“Awaara Hoon (I'm a Tramp)”, music by Sahnkar Jaikishan, lyrics by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, Awaara (1951, India)
Performed by Raj Kapoor (singing dubbed by Mukesh)
Lyrics in Hindi (turn on the CC's in the provided video for translation)
Advanced directly to the final
This number appears as the film flashes forward, giving us our first glimpse of the now-adult protagonist, Raj (Raj Kapoor). Raj, who was born into poverty and tossed out of school after not being able to afford it, fell into a criminal gang shortly after his expulsion. This is the re-introduction to the character after a lengthy spell concentrating on his childhood. The character's mannerisms, playful attitude, and this film's politics were influenced by Kapoor's admiration for silent film comedians – especially Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp and Chaplin's mid- to late-career works. Chaplin fans will notice his influence all over this number.
This song was (and remains) a stratospheric hit in South Asia, China, the Balkans, and the former USSR states. It is arguably the most popular song, worldwide, among all the songs that competed at MOABOS this year. Awaara comments upon class, feminism, and what a genuine redemption looks like.
“Belleville Rendez-vous”, music by Benoît Charest, lyrics by Sylvain Chomet, The Triplets of Belleville (2003, France/Belgium/Canada/United Kingdom)
(French original with translation) / (English dub version)
Performed by Béatrice Bonifassi and Matthieu Chedid
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song
1st in Group A
From Sylvain Chomet's absurd, darkly comic, and disgustingly original animated feature debut (“disgustingly” is used here with admiration, because of the intentional ugliness of some of the animation). The film features an aging group of singing triplets who attempt to help another woman find her grandson after the grandson was kidnapped while competing in the Tour de France. The song first appears in the opening, is reprised a few times during the film, and repeated a final time in the end credits. It forms the basis for the film's score.
“Game of Death” (Cantonese original), music by Joseph Koo, lyrics by James Wong, Game of Death (1978, Hong Kong)
Performed by Roman Tam
5th in Group B
Some rather blurry subtitles of a loose translation are in the provided video (if you know someone who is fluent in Cantonese, please let me know)
Appears as the opening credits song to the final film featuring Bruce Lee. Game of Death was incomplete at the time of Lee's death, and a "complete" version was released in 1978 with re-edited footage from his previous films. Roman Tam, the singer, was a major figure in the Cantopop music scene, He was also controversial – his on-stage flamboyance and his voice (which was not as masculine as some of his fellow Cantopop peers) were frowned upon by conservative Hong Kongers.
“Giấc Mơ (Dream)”, music and lyrics by Túng, Before Sex (2024, Vietnam)
Provided version (which is mildly NSFW) performed by Túng; performed in-film by Nguyễn Lê Việt Hưng
Lyrics in Vietnamese (very rough translation that I know the Viet Film Fest crew is gonna pick apart)
1st in Group B
The provided soundtrack version is part of the film-ending montage of this raunchy coming-of-age romantic comedy.
The song's first appearance (not provided) is much more instrumentally simple, and appears during a comedic fantastical sequence. Before Sex opens with two groups of friends discussing their opinions on sex, one-night stands, how to "win over" someone, and love before splintering into three storylines. Say what you will about how the film gets to its endings, but I saw Before Sex as a springboard into discussions about what is healthy in a relationship – rare for a major Vietnamese studio romantic comedy.
“Goodbye Girl”, music and lyrics by David Gates, The Goodbye Girl (1977)
Performed by David Gates
5th in Group A
This song appears in this romantic dramedy's finale as it transitions to end credits. It is never musically referenced elsewhere in the film. Unemployed dancer Paula McFadden (Marsha Mason) and ten-year-old daughter Lucy (Quinn Cummings) are forced to take in a struggling actor (Richard Dreyfuss), who is the friend of Paula's now-ex.
Those of you who saw The Last of Us season 1 may have noticed The Goodbye Girl featured in a certain episode of that show during a "movie night". From my perspective, The Goodbye Girl is about learning how to trust again after being abandoned (whether once before or repeatedly). Very apt for that certain episode of TLoU.
“I’ve Been Kissed Before”, music and lyrics by Lester Lee and Bob Russell, Affair in Trinidad (1952)
Performed and danced by Rita Hayworth (dubbed by Jo Ann Greer)
6th in Group B
Nightclub singer Chris Emery (Hayworth) is based in Trinidad and Tobago, still a British colony in 1952, and has been embroiled in an investigation into her late husband's murder. Her husband's brother, Steve (Glenn Ford; first seen at 0:43 in the provided video), has just arrived on the island and is seeking answers. This performance comes at significant risk for Chris, as it is being held in the estate of one of the primary murder suspects (to explain why she is taking that risk is a major spoiler). This song marks the point in the film in which the web of murderous schemes and the local authorities' investigation that define this entire work finally comes together.
Rita Hayworth, of mixed Spanish Roma and Irish/English descent, was considered one of the pin-up girls of 1940s Hollywood. She retired from filmmaking after her marriage to Prince Aly Khan, but when that marriage collapsed, she made her heralded return in this film noir, made at Columbia Pictures (where Hayworth was contracted to before the marriage).
“Même plus l'amour (Not Even Love)”, music and lyrics by Fred Avril and Philippe Monthaye, Mars Express (2023, France)
Performed by Barbara Carlotti
Lyrics in French (somewhat literal translation)
2nd in Group B
In this French animated cyberpunk noir, private detective Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera are investigating a homicide. Their investigation leads them to find the murder victim's roommate, who is being followed by persons unknown. Despite their best efforts, Aline and Carlos fail to protect the roommate while trying to make a getaway. During the scene in which this plays, Aline – a workaholic and a recovering alcoholic – is attempting to drown her sadness at a bar. For the entirety of that scene, this song plays muted, underneath dialogue and the sound mix. The lyrics are barely perceptible to the viewer. Not quoted in the film's score and never reprised.
Dropping objectivity for a moment... for all of you who are fans of the likes of Blade Runner (1982) and Ghost in the Shell (1995, Japan), Mars Express is 100% for you. And even if you haven't seen either of those, this is the one animated movie from outside the major American and Japanese studios competing in this year's edition of MOABOS I highly recommend to all, with a small warning here for the film's severe violence.
“A Million Miles Away”, music and lyrics by Fred Avril and Philippe Monthaye, Mars Express (2023, France)
Performed by Alice Lewis
4th in Group A
Appears as the only song in the end credits to this French animated cyberpunk noir. The lyrics make (relatively non-spoilery) reference to the violent events that transpired in the finale. Not quoted in the film's score. In Mars Express, private detective Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera are investigating a homicide – leading both of them to a horrible conspiracy that might shake the foundations of 2200s human society.
“On Earth as It Is in Heaven”, music and lyrics by Ennio Morricone, The Mission (1986)
Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Incantation, the London Voices, and the Barnet Schools Choir under the direction of Ennio Morricone
(partial in-film version with translated Latin lyrics and NSFW non-sexual nudity) / (soundtrack version)
Advanced directly to the final
The title comes straight from the Lord's Prayer. Set in the 1750s deep in the Paraguayan jungle near the Brazilian border, The Mission follows Spanish Jesuits Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) and Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro) as they attempt to convert the Guaraní tribe to Christianity. Their efforts are complicated when Spanish and especially Portuguese authorities deem the Guaraní as too "savage" to convert, fit only for slaughter or slavery (of all the colonial powers in the Americas, Portugal sold the most slaves and Brazil was the state that had the most slaves – in 1888, a post-independence Brazil became the final country to abolish slavery in the Western hemisphere; elements of the Jesuit Order, too, supported slavery).
This song appears three times in the film itself. The first is in the provided video above, a montage of Father Gabriel just returning to the Guaraní village, with Rodrigo in hand for the first time. The second appears in the moments just before Rodrigo and dozens of Guaraní in canoes are about to open bow-and-arrow fire on a combined Portuguese/Spanish force in defense of the Guaraní village. The final time appears in the end credits.
Both the harmony and melody appear throughout what many film music diehards consider one of the greatest film scores ever written. The oboe-led harmony, also known as "Gabriel's Oboe", is a motif symbolizing the Jesuits. The staccato lyrics, melody, and use of drums represent the Guaraní motif in this film. Composer Ennio Morricone's aim for his score (and by extension, this song) was to merge the musical worlds of Western classical music and the Guaraní. The late Morricone said his score to The Mission was his career-best work because of that musical fusion.
“Something’s Gotta Give”, music and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, Daddy Long Legs (1955)
Performed by Fred Astaire; danced by Astaire and Leslie Caron
Starts in earnest at 1:17. I feel like brains will burst if I try to describe all of the context, so please excuse this partial contextual blurb.
3rd in Group A
In this, the third (!) adaptation by 20th Century Fox of Jean Webster's 1912 young adult novel of the same name, Daddy Long Legs sees wealthy American magnate Jervis Pendleton III (Astaire in his first widescreen musical) secretly paying for the college education of young Frenchwoman Julie André (Caron), after he, by chance, spotted her tending to children at a French orphanage. Julie calls her unidentified benefactor "Daddy Long Legs", based on a faraway description given to her by her fellow orphans. As she writes to Daddy Long Legs, she nevertheless falls for him – sight supposedly unseen. And he, to his surprise, starts falling for her.
The biggest hurdle to this movie is the obvious age difference between Astaire and Caron. However, Daddy Long Legs fully acknowledges this reality throughout – and gifting viewers some hilarious lines to boot at Astaire's expense. I've seen much worse (re:age difference), and it helps that Astaire moves and dances as well as he does. Your mileage may vary, but I don't read the narrative as predatory.
This is a Great American Songbook standard and was covered by many artists, including Bing Crosby (F:NV fans?), Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.
“Tammy”, music by Jay Livingston, lyrics by Ray Evans, Tammy and the Bachelor (1957)
Performed by Debbie Reynolds
Advanced directly to the final
In this romantic comedy, Tambrey "Tammy" Tyree (Reynolds) has lived her entire life on her family houseboat alongside the Mississippi River in Natchez, Mississippi. One day, a young, polite, rich, and – yes – single pilot named Peter Brent (Leslie Nielsen; Nielsen is playing his role largely straight, he wouldn't become a noted comedic actor until after 1970's Airplane!) crashes his plane nearby in a swamp. Tammy and her grandfather (Walter Brennan) nurse him back to health, and, as thanks, Peter says if anything were to happen to Tammy's grandfather, Tammy can stay at his family estate. As you might have predicted, something does happen to Tammy's grandpa (remember that this is a comedy). Tammy has difficulty settling into high class life, but Peter's emotional and moral support has pushed her infatuation into love – this song is the realization of that love.
This would go on to be one of Reynolds' signature songs outside of her MGM career (Tammy and the Bachelor is from Universal).
“Tere Bina Aag Ye Chandni (Without You, Even Moonlight is a Scorching Fire)”, music by Shankar Jaikishan, lyrics by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, Awaara (1951, India)
Performed by Nargis and Raj Kapoor (singing dubbed by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey, respectively) and chorus
Lyrics in Hindi (turn on the CC's in the provided video for translation)
3rd in Group B
In Awaara, Raj (Raj Kapoor) and Rita (Nargis) are childhood sweethearts who were separated when Raj could not afford the fees for school, resulting in his expulsion. Years later, after Raj turned to a criminal gang to support himself and his mother, the two reconnected. He has been trying to tell Rita, indirectly, that he has turned to thievery and is attempting to leave his criminal life behind, but she's unable to connect the dots. Awaara comments upon class, feminism, and what a genuine redemption looks like – though it's not apparent in this musical number, the film's dramatic and comedic moments were inspired by the silent films of Charlie Chaplin.
This song is part of a dream sequence depicting the struggle between a potential romantic future and Raj's criminal past. The scene follows a date between Raj and Rita and immediately follows a tense exchange between Raj and his knife-wielding gang boss (seen at 9:09 in the provided video), who fully expects Raj sto steal from Rita and her family.
“That’s Amore”, music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Jack Brooks, The Caddy (1953)
Performed by Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and company
(in-film version) / (Dean Martin single)
Advanced directly to the final
Harvey Miller Jr. (Lewis, using his comedic stage voice) is the son of an accomplished professional golfer. Harvey is a fantastic golfer himself, but has severe agoraphobia (fear of crowds) preventing him from pursuing pro golf. He becomes engaged to Lisa Anthony (Barbara Bates) and stays with the extended Anthony family (who are Italian Americans, if you didn't get that from this clip). Lisa's brother, Joe (Martin) has returned home to San Francisco after a few years away looking for work. To celebrate his homecoming, the family plans a big dinner, which is preceded by this performance.
This became one of Martin's signature songs, alongside "Ain't That a Kick in the Head". It's also arguably the most well-known song that is contesting the MOABOS Final. Oft-referenced and oft-parodied, "That's Amore" is almost never covered by other artists because it is still very much seen as Dean Martin's song and his alone.
Before launching their solo careers, Martin and Lewis were a sensational comedy duo. Both men brought in different audiences and tastes as Martin was often the "straight man" to Lewis (and his comedic stage voices that influenced the likes of Jim Carrey). The Caddy was the tenth of 17 movies they made from 1949-1956 at Paramount – all comedies. And by this point, their professional relationship was fraying. Martin was tired of playing the straight man and thought Lewis' characters were beginning to dominate the Martin/Lewis films; Lewis believed his admiration and respect for Martin was not being returned.
After their profesional split, Martin pursued more dramatic roles, joined the Rat Pack, started his solo music career in earnest, and became essentially the epitome of cool in America. Lewis continued to make comedies for Paramount and, for several years, became the studio's top-earning star. He was not the epitome of cool in America, but he found adoration in Europe (in France, Lewis' strangely-voiced characters are seen as lampooning over-commercialized American life and Lewis is considered an equal to Charlie Chaplin there). He also hosted the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon (to benefit those with muscular dystrophy) from 1966-2010. Martin and Lewis reconciled during the 1976 edition of the telethon.
“You Are My Lucky Star”, music Nacio Herb Brown, lyrics by Arthur Freed, Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935)
(initial version; begins in earnest at 1:00) / (reprise, part 1) / (reprise, part 2)
Initially performed by Frances Langford; reprise performed and danced by Eleanor Powell
6th in Group A
If you're vaguely familiar with this song, that's because either you've seen the end of Singin' in the Rain (1952) and/or Alien (1979). Stage producer Robert Gordon (Robert Taylor) is putting on a radio special to promote his upcoming Broadway musical. Robert is also having trouble casting a lead actress for his musical. Frances Langford plays herself here – she was principally a radio star who made only a handful of appearances in films, usually in supporting or bit roles. Langford would be a key fixture in Bob Hope's USO performances during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
In the reprise, Robert's former high school sweetheart, Irene Foster (Eleanor Powell), has just arrived from Albany to audition for his stage musical. She imagines herself onstage – singing and dancing in a fantastical ballet sequence. Powell, approaching the peak years of a relatively short film career, was considered by many to be the most accomplished female dancer in Hollywood history (incl. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Fred Astaire, who said she was in a league all by herself). And here, she shows she can do more than just tap dancing.
Do you have a question or comment about MOABOS's processes? Would you like to know more about a song or a movie featured in this year's competition? Please ask me! If you are having difficulty accessing any of the songs (especially if region-locked) or if there are any errors in the links above or the playlist, please let me know as soon as possible.
Once again everybody, my thanks for all for your support for the Movie Odyssey, the blog, and for me personally over this last calendar year and beyond. Yes, that goes for the folks who I had the pleasure to meet for the first time this year too! However long you've known me – it has been and is a distinct privilege and a pleasure to share all this music and (at least excerpts of) these movies with you. It's my hope you find this entertaining and enlightening about cinema and the music that goes along with it. Do not worry too much about this if you cannot participate, although I will be checking in as the deadlines get close. Happy listening, and I hope you have fun!
A happy holiday season to you and yours!
TABULATION
The winner is determined by a process distinct from the preliminary round. For the final, the winner is chosen by the process known as single transferable vote (the Academy Awards uses this method to choose a Best Picture winner, visually explained here):
All #1 picks from all voters are tabulated. A song needs more than half of all aggregate votes to win (50% of all votes plus one… i.e. if there are thirty respondents, sixteen #1 votes are needed to win on the first count).
If there is no winner after the first count (as is most likely), the song(s) with the fewest #1 votes or points is/are eliminated. Placement will be determined by the tiebreakers described below. Then, we look at the ballots of those who voted for the most recently-eliminated song(s). Their votes then go to the highest remaining non-eliminated song on their ballot.
The process described in step #2 repeats until one song has secured 50% plus one of all votes. We keep eliminating nominees and transfer votes to the highest-ranked, non-eliminated song on each ballot. A song is declared the winner when it reaches more than fifty percent of all #1 and re-distributed votes.
NOTE: It is possible after several rounds of counting that respondents who did not entirely fill in their ballots will have wasted their votes at the end of the process. For example, if a person voted the second-to-last place song as their #1, ranked no other songs, and the count has exceeded two rounds, their ballot is discarded (lowering the vote threshold needed to win), and they have no say in which song ultimately is the winner. No one who has ranked only one or two songs on their rankings and nothing more has succeeded since this tabulation method was implemented. I highly discourage, but do not forbid, these practices.
Tiebreakers: 1) first song to receive 50% plus one of all #1 and transferred votes; 2) total points earned (the preliminary round's primary tabulation method); 3) total #1 votes; 4) average placement on my ballot and my sister’s ballot; 5) tie declared

you have mentioned savagery in some of your posts...which characters do you think are really savage??
lol omg one of my favorite blogs (@might-guys-acorn) was asked something similar a while ago, I remember. (a) check them out. (b) here we go!
Straight savages
Neji
I mentioned this before, but Neji is honestly an animal.
His byakugan probably just goes beyond the normal abilities. He knows everyone’s secrets. He knows guilty pleasures. Weird shit you do when you’re alone. How you eat chicken nuggets even though you claim you’re a vegetarian. Nothing is sacred and nothing is safe.
Which is why he said the shit he said to Hinata during the chunin exam prelims. He just knew her secrets. He knew she doubted herself. Honestly, he wasn’t totally wrong, he was just a dick about it.
I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had burst out with “listen…Naruto is not going to love you back…the mans is fixated on Sasuke…maybe amend your diary?”
Also, he has some funny ass one-liners. Like when Lee tried to give him a piggyback ride and he goes, “I REFUSE.” Didn’t even consider it.
He gives everyone the hands. Taught himself some main branch techniques. Beats the shit out of everyone with it.
Sakura
Okay, hear me out. She’s so fucking savage.
It’s because she’s so bad at empathy. She went off to Sasuke about how Naruto is so wretched because he has no family. Sasuke, whose entire family was annihilated. And this is common knowledge.
Sakura, who eliminated her friendship with Ino because she thought they shared a crush.
She is That Bitch.
Also, didn’t she say she loves getting picked on because that means she’s the best or something?
God, she’d just straight up tell someone they’re looking pretty rough today and not understand why they didn’t like her constructive criticism.
Might Guy
His savagery, to me, lies in the fact that he keeps forgetting Kisame.
How do you forget him?? He looks like a shark. He’s a fish on two legs. What is happening?
How shamelessly disrespectful do you have to be to just erase him from your memory three times?
I love that for him.
Also, unlocking all those gates??
He is also someone who will give anyone and everyone the hands.
He was so ready to beat the shit out of Madara.
Also, may I remind you that he made Itachi flee on sight because he knew Guy would destroy his 100-pound ass with pleasure?
Madara
Speaking of, what a fucking animal.
He was ready to fucking rumble.
Madara really said “weak people are ugly.” That’s so fucking funny and he totally meant it.
He manipulated the fuck out of Obito for years (fuck that incel, though. I don’t feel bad), and then straight up said “Yeah…wish I picked Sasuke…he would’ve been better…”
Put a face on his chest? For what reason cowboy?
Burst out of that coffin like he’s been practicing some sick kicks to make the coolest entrance ever.
Beat the shit out of everyone without breaking a sweat.
Launched two meteors because he can!!!
We have no choice but to stan.
Sasori
I think he’s both a savage and a bitch boy.
He’s a savage because I’m terrified of him because I don’t like dolls.
Sasori is a straight up sociopath.
He is a savage not in the conventional, funny sense. He’s just crazy crazy.
And yet…his self confidence is so admirable. He chose to build himself a puppet body that was identical to his twinky self. He shamelessly stripped in front of his grandmother and some fifteen-year-olds.
What a fuckin freak, man.
Sasuke
He’s a savage because he made Orochimaru, the man who was so disgusting the Akatsuki rebuked him, dislike him as a person. I can only imagine the hell he put him through because he refused to learn social skills.
Sasuke really became an international terrorist then decided one day “Well…it’s up to me. I will be hokage.”
Returned to the village one day as if nothing ever happened. What the fuck, man.

The return of colors! I was feeling slightly better about my color ability, so I started doing them again. I threw in the line of Nat using Pandy’s catchphrase of “Oh Nuggets” as I just liked that saying and felt it needed to come back.
So, Blaine went inside Nat’s beard. this is another point where I had this whole other idea of Blaine going on a magical adventure inside the realm of Nat’s beard-world (like Weird world). I even drew out a number of prelims and sent them to Matt. Blaine would be wearing a Fantastic 4 shirt, and he would get confused as a great hero due to the symbol on his chest. That would spiral into this whole story. But Matt didn’t seem keen on that, and I didn’t really have the time.
I did end up using that Sign of Four later on upon trying to wrap this whole comic up. Maybe not as fun as the adventures of Blaine, but fun enough.
