K is for King 👑 | finishing up the week of the letter k with songs and stories | we sang Ole' King Cole, he liked to change Cole to Cove! we talked about fiddles and he sang the song using his own instruments (bells and tambourines) Story time was super fun with the story of The King's New Turban / similar to The Emperors New Clothes / He retold the story and talked about the characters. Cove had lots of fun decorating crowns; He shaped a crown with clay, + cut one from construction paper, and made a handprint King! We wrapped up our kingly lesson with some handwriting practice. We will enjoy a game of Checkers while the baby naps! a fun way to use number flash cards are with dominos! simply match the domino to their number card. Simple!! J is for Japan | we did some geography today and talked all about Japan! In the kitchen we made some simple pb+j & pb+banana sushi for snackin, he loved this! Cove decorated + colored a kimono as we talked about Japanese culture and wardrobe. Cove made a Japanese flag using construction paper (always trying to get scissor practice in) he unscrambled his tiles to correctly spell out Japan, he used the globe to locate Japan and we talked about its location and climates. We played 'sushi bar' and Cove was the sushi chef master creating the items I ordered -- this is a great for memory! He worked real hard on his chip sticks skills too! Lastly, he labeled his map of Japan with its capital and other major cities. I played Japanese music and we learned a few new words to say in Japanese! Cove has decided he's definitely traveling to Japan when he's older! Can Mama come? 🙆🏼 🇯🇵/ It was such a fun day learning about Japan. 幸せな学習! | ps. Swipe left 👈🏻 | Fee, fi, fo, fum I smell Jack and the Beanstalk learning fun! We started off with reading the classic story and talked about the settings + characters. Cove unscrambled his letter tiles to correctly spell the name Jack, we spoke of the importance of names always beginning with an uppercase letter and also the confusing same sound of the letter c + k. For art he drew the beanstalk and castle, giant flowers and used cotton balls for the big fluffy clouds. He used oil pastels, it turned out great! For some math he used 'magic' jelly beans and put the correct number on the corresponding flash card, he then had to say the numbers aloud from least to greatest. (We did this multiple times, switching the cards after every 3) the last activity was a great way for him to review all of the letters we've reviewed thus far. I simply took a paper towel roll and wrapped it in green paper (you could paint it too!) I used craft sticks and the scraps to create leaves (simply glue them on one side of the stick) on the leaves I wrote uppercase letters and on the 'stalk' I wrote lowercase letters. Poke holes along the stalk, all over. The object is to match the leaf to the stalk. You can use numbers, letters or even words for this fun activity. It was a lot of fun with Jack and the Beanstalk this afternoon, Cove did a fantastic job with all of his lessons so he received a golden egg! For our outside activity I drew giant foot prints using chalk and filled them in with sight words, he'll go jump around like a giant on them later on this evening! 🍦art today with for the letter i. We sang ice cream songs and talked about our favorite flavors! His is mint chocolate chip and mine is plain ole' chocolate. I threw in some math by having him ask everyone in the house their favorite flavor and he made a graph showing the results. // We used some vanilla scented clay and he formed scoops of ice cream and topped an empty cardboard roll (cone) then rolled a small cherry to top it off! Cove scribbled corresponding colors on construction paper with oil pastels, then he ripped different the paper into small pieces. He built different ice creams glueing piece by piece his flavors to fill his waffle + sugar cones (construction paper) I traced ice cream shaped popsicles in four different colors, Cove cut them out and used the shades (oil pastels) of that color to create his frozen treats and then he glued them on to their matching color stick. We talked about the difference the sound of the i in ice cream makes from the sound of i in insects that we learned about yesterday. : long i and short I . He spelled out i c e c r e a m with his tiles using his sounds. today is all about creepy crawly insects! 🐜 this week we are reviewing the letter | i | we had some play doh letter forming, letter sounds with letter tiles + wrote out sight words that begin with the letter I / I, is, it and in / we read about all types of insects and discussed insects we have seen before. Moths are his favorite! I found these super cool printables on @pinterest, he had to draw the missing half of each insect, he really enjoyed this activity! we are back, with the letter H! H is for 🏡! We did some easy reading, shape sorting-- he picked the shapes he could use to build a house; and house building with craft sticks and again, with clay. Cove also used his salt tray to trace letters. (I use a rectangle Pyrex dish and just cover with the lid when not in use.) we did a scavenger hunt and looked for items around our home that he read about in his books. He spent a good amount of time with the clay, adding trees and birds to his house picture. We talked about different kinds of homes and things that make our home special to him. He said he loved our green front doors! g is for germs! we had a super fun science filled morning learning all about icky germs! we started off with breakfast and The Magic School Bus, season 1 episode 3 -- Inside Ralphie / then we headed to do some experiments! Cove first traced his letters on our 'germ guy' whiteboard to spell //germs// and he traced his hands over them to show dirty hands! He used some clay + connector pieces to create his own form of bacteria! Next, we talked all about how germs are invisble and easily spead all over.. we did this with an activity called 'dirty fruits' and he simply placed his hand in some flour and begin picking the fruits up, the flour was left on each fruit and he was able to see how germs are easily transferred to foods we eat! After that he did this with a mixture of glitter and lotion, and picked up different types of game pieces such as a candy land man, wooden blocks and puzzle pieces. The final experiment was the 'germ scatter' using black pepper, water and some liquid antibacterial soap! Add some water and black pepper to a plate, dip your finger in the soap and touch the water.. watch as the black pepper aka germs, scatter away! Cove also unscrambled his tiles to correctly spell germs and we talked about how the sound of this /g/ is soft and compared different hard + soft words using the letter g. We had such a blast learning all about germs this morning! Of course the last thing we did was wash, wash, wash our hands! Try some of these simple experiments out on your own and have a germy blast! G is for goat. We started the morning with one of our all time favorite stories.. The Three Billy Goats Gruff -- this is a beautiful copy from 1967! We will be working on the difference of sounds the letter g makes. The hard /g/ sound for goat, grass and glue. (We will explore soft /g/ with giraffes and germs later this week) He rearranged his letter tiles to correctly spell goat and created a fun abstract 3-d artwork of different size/color bridges and fresh cut grass. This activity was really for getting in some cutting practice with scissors! It turned out very cool! We will be making some fun paper goat masks and colorful symmetry trolls later on! Happy Friday! Today's art lesson was inspired by 🐟! One of our favorite types of art to create is mixed media. We love using different colors, textures and materials. We dyed some pasta a few weeks ago for another craft so we pulled 'em back out to use for scales, coral and seaweed! Cove used oil pastels for bright color, he loves to smooth and blend the colors with his fingers! He used different sized blue pompoms for the air bubbles. It turned out so beautiful! C is for Cow. This afternoon we talked all about cows and farms! He found items in his kitchen that are grown on a farm and begin with the letter c. [Some carrots, cucumbers and cabbage.] He then found the items that come from cows! [yogurt, milk, butter, ice cream and cheese.] I totally googled 'cow template' and printed it off for him to fill in with paint. We are using our @worldericcarle and @babyeinstein books for inspiration. I had him count his spots as he added them to his cow painting. Cove located and counted all of the squares he could find on the pages and had a blast making farm animal sounds! We love Cows so this was a very enjoyable quiet time activity for my little guy.
