After a surge in home energy bills that left many New Jersey residents with costs that have doubled, or more, there have been widespread calls for hearings to hold the state utility commission, the governor and supporters of green energy accountable.
State Sen. Mike Testa, R-Salem, echoed those calls and said on Wednesday that much of the blame goes to Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy’s "Energy Master Plan," launched in 2020.
"New Jersey is already one of the most unaffordable states in the United States of America. Now people are being hit with energy bills that are essentially doubled. And look, I get it that it was a hot July, but it wasn't that hot that your energy bills should have doubled," Testa said.
One constituent apparently told Testa they raised their thermostat four degrees on average this summer in the hopes of saving money but that the cost still somehow increased "significantly."
Homeowners in suburban Morris County vented about the news on a local social media group, according to the Morristown Daily Record, with a Parsippany resident questioning a $782 monthly bill.
"Quite frankly, what I think happened is, via the Murphy Energy Master Plan that I've often called the energy disaster plan, it seemed that the BPU (New Jersey Board of Public Utilities) and the Murphy administration are working in tandem chasing this green energy dream.
"It’s what I call the energy disaster plan. It's a green energy nightmare," he said, adding that BPU officials went so far as to wear windmill pins at public functions amid New Jersey’s kerfuffle over offshore turbines.
In a lengthy statement, BPU acknowledged it had received correspondence from New Jerseyans and offered several potential reasons for the rate hikes.
The board cited increases in generation costs and usage, and it asked customers to contact their utility or the board right away if they find an "anomaly and cannot determine an explanation" A one-time $175 bill credit program is also available, a board spokesperson said.
PJM, the energy transmission company that covers much of the Mid-Atlantic, offered data to Fox News Digital on the matter as well.
PJM research showed electricity demand is likely to increase in the region particularly due to "proliferation of high-demand data centers" and "thermal generators retiring at a rapid pace due to government and private sector policies as well as economics."
Meanwhile, at the federal level, Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., fumed at the BPU this week in a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, which cited "thousands" of constituents discovering unbearable bill increases.
"Given these alarming reports, I demand that the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) hold a public hearing in South Jersey to allow residents to voice their concerns directly to the Board," he wrote, adding the board must also determine whether there is a correlation between the rate hikes and the offshore wind turbine operations in his Cape May district.
Van Drew said New Jersey officials must take the situation seriously, and he dismissed claims that the "unseasonably warm summer" was the only variable.
"We need transparency and accountability from the NJBPU to ensure that the needs and concerns of South Jersey residents are being effectively addressed," he said.
Van Drew previously noted how Danish green power company Ørsted withdrew its windmill plans for the Jersey Shore despite Murphy’s full support and taxpayer funding: "They still couldn't make it."
While Murphy’s office did not return a request for comment, the governor previously praised his Energy Master Plan’s goal of 100% clean energy by 2050 in the Garden State.
"The Energy Master Plan comprehensively addresses New Jersey’s energy system, including electricity generation, transportation and buildings, and their associated greenhouse gas emissions and related air pollutants," he said.
In a statement Tuesday, the Murphy administration highlighted a "Residential Energy Assistance Payment (REAP) Initiative" to provide financial relief to thousands of households, of the same $175 figure cited by BPU.
"Making our state more affordable for New Jersey families has been the top priority since day one," Murphy said in the statement.
State Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, D-Perth Amboy, added it is "great to see this resource added to the growing list of support available to residents who need a little extra help in our state."
Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, R-Summit, said price-per-kilowatt hour increases averaged 8.6% in Central Jersey.
"It’s simple economics: When supply drops and demand surges, prices go up," she told Fox News Digital.
"I'm of the belief that Americans are innovative. … The government can't be mandating deadlines at the same time that they're … shutting down natural gas production."
Munoz, who serves on the Budget Committee, said there are likely Democrats who agree the rate hikes are a problem: "That's kind of a silly concept for them to think, like, do they not care that their constituents are the ones that are having to absorb these massive increases in cost?"
Fox News Digital reached out to state Senate President Nick Scutari, D-Clark, for such a perspective.
Citing attempts to make New Jersey vehicle sales 60% electric by 2035, Munoz said there won’t be the proper infrastructure to fulfill the need, regardless of opinions on EVs themselves.
When Testa was asked about other states’ similar green energy endeavors – such as then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo shuttering the Indian Point nuke plant on the Hudson River opposite Haverstraw in 2020 – he expressed relief that crackdowns hadn’t gotten that far at home.
A similar nuclear plant in Lower Alloways Creek Township remains operational, he noted, adding that he is proud to have it and its jobs and generation ability in his district.
Testa said the state’s energy portfolio is 50% natural gas, 40% nuclear and 10% other, which flies in the face of Murphy’s aversion to additional natural gas production.
While some energy experts fear crises arising from nuclear power, such as the 1979 Three Mile Island meltdown in Dauphin County, Pa., Testa said technology has advanced since and that there are also small modular nuclear reactors similar to those on submarines that could generate safe, clean energy inland at low cost.
"By the way, we’re positive that those don’t kill whales," he said.

David Tennant in 'The Slab Boys Trilogy' (1994)
A lot of you know (or may not know but are just finding out!) I've done tons of research on DT's early Scottish theatre work (80s/90s) for a developing podcast to share my discoveries. Today let's veer off and talk about a play DT alluded to in a recent interview, shall we? In a interview with Kelly-Anne Taylor on The Radio Times Podcast, David spoke about his first job when he moved to London. "I worked at the Young Vic, that seemed unspeakably glamorous to a boy from Paisley. I mean I was doing a play set in Paisley, so I was pretty good casting!" The play he's referring to was called THE SLAB BOYS TRILOGY - which, as it sounds, was actually a set of three plays by Scottish playwright John Byrne. The first play in the set was called "The Slab Boys". The second was "Cuttin' A Rug", and the third was "Still Life." This trilogy of plays was set in Paisley, Scotland - surprise surprise! But why? Because John Byrne is from Paisley, too, and he worked as a slab boy in a carpet factory. And what's a slab boy? They're the fellows who mix and grind colors for a company's design department. John Byrne's a Scottish cultural institution. Byrne graduated from The Glasgow School of Art. He was once commissioned to design a possible cover for the Beatles' White Album but his design - though rejected at the time - was used on the 1980 "Beatles Ballads" LP. But I digress! (...though seriously, check him out! He designed other LP covers, too, like for Gerry Rafferty and Donovan! He's an interesting character indeed. And he was once Tilda Swinton's partner, too, so yeah...) But back to the play(s)! It's May 1994. David's just finished his run as Edmund Tyrone in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" at the Dundee Rep. Playing his mother was the grande dame of Scottish theatre, Edith MacArthur, better known in the fandom as the predictor of DT's future stardom. For those who don't know - MacArthur spotted David's talent when she saw him perform as a child in a school play called 'Gypsum's Journey'. MacArthur told his parents she predicted he'd be a successful stage actor & she'd probably play his mother. She was right. She did. Twice! So...it's May 1994. David had filmed "Takin' Over The Asylum" - he finished filming that in late Oct of 1993, where he had met Arabella Weir - and then did "Long Day's Journey Into Night." So now, given the chance to become Arabella's tenant, he made his famous move to London. David had met another lovely lady filming "Takin' Over The Asylum" - Katy Murphy (Francine). Though I don't know exactly how David heard about or got the job on The Slab Boys, it's important to note Katy Murphy had a role too. Did one hear about it & tell the other? Seems likely!
So what are the plays about? In short, The Slab Boys Trilogy spans the 1950s-1970s and is about three working class young men (Phil, Spanky and Hector) who have jobs in the slab room of a carpet manufacturer.
According to the National Library of Scotland: "It is a Friday in 1957. Phil, Spanky and Hector are young lads working in a Paisley carpet factory as 'slab boys'. They should be grinding up powder for the paint slabs, but they prefer to do as little work as they can and smoke as much as possible. Young, sharp and bored, they discuss their aspirations. Phil dreams of a place at Glasgow Art School, while Spanky wants to go to America and become the next Elvis. Hector dreams of taking Lucille from the mail room to the staff dance – which is also on Spanky's agenda."
David got the role of Alan Downie in "The Slab Boys" and "Cuttin' A Rug." Alan was better-off than the others; his father knew the boss, and he went to work in the slab room temporarily before going off to university. The others didn't like Alan.
Katy Murphy played Lucille.
In the second play, "Cuttin' A Rug" (set on the evening immediately following the action of The Slab Boys), the boys are off to the annual factory staff dance. David's character Alan had begun university and shows up in his father's car with Lucille.
(The third play of the trilogy, "Still Life", was set in a cemetery on the morning of a winter's day in 1967 for Act One, and Act Two on a winter's afternoon in 1972. David wasn't a part of this one, so I don't have as many facts on it as I do the others.)
Now we've established what the plays were about, let's talk about how they were received. All three plays ran at London's Young Vic from 9 Sep 1994 til 12 Nov 1994. Directed by Tim Supple, the set and costume designer was John Byrne himself!
During the week the three plays were in rep - meaning each was performed on successive nights - except for Saturdays, when all were back to back: "The Slab Boys" began at 11a, "Cuttin' A Rug," at 2:30p, and "Still Life" at 7:30p. You could see the set for £24, or each for £6-£12.
Reviews were generally good ("an exhilarating example of true ensemble work" and "performed with considerable power"). But it wasn't a box office win, and only drew in less than 40% of the revenue it needed to break even. It wasn't of great benefit to the Young Vic.
But - along with the premiere of "Takin Over The Asylum" in late Sep 1994, which introduced David to the world at large - "The Slab Boys" has the distinction of being the first theatre job DT got upon moving to London. His second was "What The Butler Saw." But that's for later.😁
Now if you've stuck with me this long, you deserve a goodie! Official photographs for the play's run at the Young Vic were taken by Billy Cooper (and a few from the play with David in them float about out there.) The goodie today is this: this is a clip from STV doing a feature on John Byrne at the time of the run at the Young Vic. If you look really close, you can see a brief (like "if-you-blink-a-few-times-you'll-miss-him") video of David in the play! He'll be the fellow in the white coat.

Chapter 2 : Had me a blast
To : <shitheads>
Re : no more candy striping
So, good news/bad news… Bad news is that I'm gonna be officially in charge of all you useless fucks once everyone clears medical. The Bosses are adding to the team rather than splitting us up, and I get to sign all the reports instead of just writing them for that fuckwad Stein, may he rest in peace cause I sure don't want him back.
Good news is that I'm not sitting on my thumbs anymore waiting for you slackers to get off your asses, and got sent on surveillance instead. And without talking out of turn I can tell you that I'm working in a god damned tourist trap. Got fucking fake credentials for a job I'm overqualified for because "I'm a damned Navy SEAL, yeah I can teach that" would break character.
Anyway, point is, you slugs gotta find someone else to bring you treats and books like some sort of high security clearance door dash, and I'm not sorry I had to leave too fast to say goodbye in person.
To : <gamma>
Re : might not be buying the drinks
So in my continuing saga of "the undercover assignment that might be a stealth vacation or possibly a weird internal psyop" the area of the resort under construction finally opened, which means I may lose my bet that this is about money laundering. Say "la vie," I guess, but it's actually really nice looking. Will definitely check it out in a couple of days when the initial crush dies down.
Actually, that could be the thing that makes me blow my cover - "resort town slacker local with rich parents" isn't usually hard to keep up, but I don't know how well I can fake incompetence when some college kid with a 2 week certification gives me the "safety training" this new attraction requires.
Anyway, no I continue to have no beach and/or snow bunnies, I'm on assignment, no matter how vague. Hope everyone's doing well, congratulations on the physical therapy milestone, Murphy!

NJ Clean Energy Update
In a recent article I covered a few details on how wind power works, the goals of the New Jersey Clean Energy Master Plan, and the projects being worked on -or cancelled- for New Jersey’s future.
The recent news at the end of 2023 was that two major projects with Ørsted had been cancelled because of unexpected costs and manufacturing delays. Despite this setback, Governor Phil Murphy continued to be steadfast towards achieving eventual 100% clean energy for the state.
Since then, two new projects have been scheduled. The two wind farms will be built in the New York Bight, an ocean space in the nook of New Jersey out to the eastern tip of Long Island. They will reportedly provide enough energy for 1.8 million homes and dramatically reduce emissions2.
The projects are called Leading Light Wind and Attentive Energy Two, which are New York and New Jersey based, both with individual websites that are linked below.
Concerns about impacts on fishing and environmental health continue to be worth discussing. Attentive Energy, one company involved in the planned projects, states its goal of no net loss in biodiversity or commercial fishing revenue, and plans to maintain close monitoring pre- and post-construction.
These projects are still in their development stages, with construction likely starting in 2027 or 2028. For now, they are still planning, and what the actual documents and written plans will be is yet to be seen. As discussed in a previous article, commercial fishing is unlikely to be impacted, but the environmental effects are complicated and could be positive or negative for the ecosystem. As construction gets closer, we will have to wait to see what steps are actually taken to mind the environment being built in.
To revisit the relevant research, the Ocean and Coastal Management journal published a recent article in their March 2024 issue. This article, pulling on over 100 previous studies, acknowledges the potential positive impacts on ecosystem services from offshore wind farms, such as acting as artificial reefs, providing shelter and foraging space for different species, and indirectly creating protected marine areas5.
The relatively rapid push for wind energy is a boon, and the minimum effort we should expect considering the state of carbon emissions. But this speed we’re aiming for might also not be the most responsible.
In the same article, the authors highlight how the effects of offshore wind farms on the environment are often narrow in their scope of study, too spatially limited to provide the best assessment of the true impacts5. This further hinders the advancement of a subject that has already fallen behind due to the drawbacks of time limitations and low amounts of research efforts put into it.
In their research, the authors found additional potential positive effects of offshore wind farms, but also significant likelihood of negative effects. Some examples are the potential to boost invasive species, and to reduce biodiversity in some desired species of fish and birds5.
Overall, the article emphasizes the gaps of data in this topic. It is very difficult for us to assess the expectations of environmental impacts from offshore wind farms because we do not know enough about it yet. Possibly, the rate at which these projects are moving is too much too soon, and we should slow down until we can devote more effort to comprehensive studies. The struggle, though, is that if we wait, climate change continues to accelerate. Hopefully, we can balance completing clean energy projects with organizing expansive studies into how they are affecting ecosystems.

Synopsis 1: Batman and Robin investigate the mystery of a neighbor's cracked safe and the combination for it which was found on a soda pull-tab. Unfortunately, Robin only manages to punch the thief once before he could escape, leaving the Duo without much information to continue the investigation.
The next day, Bruce, Dick and Alfred get going to Bruce's house on the beach as part of their yearly vacation, knowing that it would be the last time they all go together. On their way to the beach, they pick up a young boy, who Bruce decided to help reform as part of a special rehabilitation program.
Upon arriving to the beach, Dick and the young boy meet their neighbors' daughter, Deena, who has a black eye. She invites them to the party at her parents' house. That night, Bruce, Dick and the boy attend the party and they become aware of another crime similar to the previous one in their neighbor's home. Following the clues, the first suspect is the young boy, but Bruce and Dick believe in his innocence and find a trace to the real thief by investigating further.
Using the clues they find, Batman and Dick deduce that the thief is Deena, who has access to the house at all times. Batman rounds up the thugs that used Deena in their crimes and captures them with Dick's help. Once the crime is cleared and the young boy is exonerated, everything returns to normal, except for the fact that the team of Batman and Robin is bound to separate.
Synopsis 2: Continuing from last issue… Barbara Gordon and Jason Bard stumble upon a the suspect of a mugging/murder involving a basketball player named Topper while on a date as Topper. As Batgirl, she and Bard find that the evidence proving Topper is guilty is possibly in his locker, the two are determined to find a way to break their date in order to investigate further. Bard breaks off the date feigning a headache and pretends to leave in a cab, while Barbara switches back to Batgirl and hides in a locker, Bard soon returns to the locker room and hides in one of the shower stalls.
After the game, Topper is informed by his goons about their previous confrontation with Bard and Batgirl. Topper then returns to his locker room where he is attacked by Batgirl, who he easily defeats. Bard is unable to stop him because his lame knee ends up giving out. Topper reveals that what he stole from the person he murdered was a book of information on the cities numbers rackets.
When debating what to do with Batgirl, Bard arrives to save the day, but slips and topples on the crooks, giving Batgirl the distraction she needs to get free and defeat them herself. The two commend each other for their teamwork after the crooks are turned over to police.

TRENTON, N.J. -- New Jersey's ban on the AR-15 rifle is unconstitutional, but the state's cap on magazines over 10 rounds passes constitutional muster, a federal judge said Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan's 69-page opinion says he was compelled to rule as he did because of the Supreme Court's rulings in firearms cases, particularly the 2022 Bruen decision that expanded gun rights.
Sheridan's ruling left both 2nd Amendment advocates and the state attorney general planning appeals. The judge temporarily delayed the order for 30 days.
Pointing to the high court's precedents, Sheridan suggested Congress and the president could do more to curb gun-related violence nationwide.
“It is hard to accept the Supreme Court’s pronouncements that certain firearms policy choices are ‘off the table’ when frequently, radical individuals possess and use these same firearms for evil purposes,” he wrote.
Sheridan added: “Where the Supreme Court has set for the law of our Nation, as a lower court, I am bound to follow it. ... This principle — combined with the reckless inaction of our governmental leaders to address the mass shooting tragedy afflicting our Nation — necessitates the Court’s decision."
Nine other states and the District of Columbia have laws similar to New Jersey's, covering New York, Los Angeles and other major cities as well as the sites of massacres such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were killed by a shooter armed with an AR-15, one of the firearms commonly referred to as an assault weapon.
"Bans on so-called ‘assault weapons’ are immoral and unconstitutional. FPC will continue to fight forward until all of these bans are eliminated throughout the United States,” said Brandon Combs, president of the Firearms Police Coalition, one of the plaintiffs.
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin said in a statement the ruling undermines public safety.
“The AR-15 is an instrument designed for warfare that inflicts catastrophic mass injuries, and is the weapon of choice for the epidemic of mass shootings that have ravaged so many communities across this nation,” he said.
He added: "We look forward to pressing our arguments on appeal.”
Several challenges to state assault weapons bans have cited the Bruen decision.
New Jersey has among the strictest gun laws in the country, particularly under Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, who has signed a number of measures into law, including the 2018 large capacity magazine ban at the center of this week’s ruling. More measures Murphy signed in 2022 include allowing the attorney general to use the state’s public nuisance law to go after gun makers in court. A message seeking comment Wednesday was left with a spokesperson for the governor.
The state’s assault weapons ban dates to 1990 and includes various other weapons, but Sheridan focused on the AR-15, citing the plaintiffs’ concentration on that weapon in their court filings. The large capacity magazine bill signed by Murphy lowered the limit from 15 rounds to 10 against the protest of 2nd Amendment advocates. The bill’s sponsors said the goal was to reduce the potential for mass casualties in shootings.

This isn’t a band t-shirt at all, but rather a knock-off of a much beloved t-shirt from a vanished age. From the chronicles of England’s 2000 AD (most notable for Judge Dredd), this is the fabled “You Have Been Judged...” design featuring two of the Dark Judges (in this instance Judge Mortis and Judge Death) informing you of your sorry fate, as lovingly illustrated by artist Brian Bolland. Is it a bit tasteless? Sure, but it was famously sported by Jimmy G of Murphy’s Law on the back cover of their debut album from 1987 and by erstwhile Human League vocalist Phil Oakey in the video for his solo 1984 hit, “Together in Electric Dreams” (to be fair, both Phil and Jimmy sported a white version of this shirt). I have been searching for this shirt for literal decades, and finally found it online a couple of weeks back. Another Holy Grail item to check off my list. I lead a very silly life.
