Mangroves at Rompeolas

Would you believe this scenic beauty is at the heart of the city itself! Sorsogon Rompeolas, popularly known as Sorsogon Pier or Baywalk, boasts of gorgeous sunset that fills up the entire place with vibrant colors as you see the sun sets in the horizon overlooking  the Pinaculan Island. The word “Rompeolas”, loosely translated as “breakwater” in Spanish, is just a stone’s throw away from the city’s parish church - the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Rompeolas is strategically located in one of the largest bay in the country. The Sorsogon Bay’s coastline stretches across several towns and the city of Sorsogon itself. The towns include Castilla, Casiguran, Magallanes and Juban. Rompeolas also offers a magnificent view of Mt. Bulusan. The Rompeolas have greatly improved through the years. Sorsogueños who have become more health conscious started visiting the place for strolling, taking pictures, and watching the glorious sunsets. As various affordable eateries and restaurants became available in the area, people have shown their appreciation of the place as their visits and activities also increased: from the early morning jogging and Zumba dance sessions for the health conscious, to kids flying locally-made kites, running and playing around the Gazebo-filled walkway as well as young professionals and teenagers having their snacks at the Dampa-style food stalls.  Rompeolas have indeed came alive. Food carts bearing various street foods and even fresh buko juice cater to the Sorsogueños needs and to visitors alike. Couplescome here for romantic sunset dates. Restaurants and bars are also available in the evening for those who want to relax and chill after a hard day’s work. One of the well-known food shacks in the area is Pandora’s where its sisig and pansit offerings are highly recommended. As part of the Tourism development plan of the local government, the Rompeolas is expected to continuously develop and improve its offerings to the local people and to its visitors from other places. From early morning to late night gimmicks with families and friends, the place have become lively and “Instagrammable”. Under the Health, Education/Environment, Agriculture, Rural Development, Tourism and Shelter Program or simply H.E.A.R.T.S. Program, the provincial government of Sorsogon pursued the development of the Pinaculan Treasure Island Resort, with the main purpose of stimulating economic growth in the area. It is located in Barangays Talisay and Bitan-o Dalipay in Sorsogon City and is situated in a three-hectare quiet island off the shore of the Urban Capital within the Central Business District, right next to the existing Sorsogon City Baywalk or Rompeolas. According to the Sorsogon Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Pinaculan Island has a longitudinal distance of three hundred ninety-six (396) meters.  The highest elevation is approximately eight (8) meters above sea-level.  The distance of its tail to the mainland of Barangay Bitan-o-Dalipay is approximately eighty (80) meters and is connected during low tide.  Its tadpole is about four hundred fifty-seven (457) meters to the port. The Pinaculan Treasure Island Resort Project aspires to build up a resort that will cater to conventions, meetings, seminars, exhibits and other activities for day-tour guests. It has a total investment requirement of P160 Million to be implemented in two phases. Phase I is a P30 Million LGU-funded project to be spearheaded by the Provincial Government of Sorsogon which include a two-year detailed planning, design and construction of road network, jetty with two-bay cruiser and swimming enclosure, as well as utilities structure. Phase II will be a P130 Million Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project expected to be completed over a period of another two years which include planning, procurement and construction of facilities such as convention pavilion, nine duplex cabanas, 50-room hotel, Spanish lighthouse, sunken galleon resto-bar, infinity pool and bar, 10 units handicrafts village stalls, picnic forest and landscaping, white sand beach swimming enclosure, and seahorse floating resto grille with fish cage. Currently, the Sorsoguenos are enjoying the additional walkway connecting the Rompeolas and the Pinaculan Island. The most recent development is the addition of a lighthouse and a hanging bridge where I took this shot. A lot of young mangrove trees are expected to provide sanctuary to the small fish and the continuous development in the area is also expected to attract more visitors and tourists which will help in the economic growth of the province as a whole.
