I think that Radko (Serbia) loved Nikolay (Bulgaria) during the Ottoman times, but when Rumen was born he felt like Rumen stole Nikolay's love for him /and really Nikolay loved Rumen very, very much/ and he felt betrayed.

The last drop was when Nikolay and Rumen united. Radko was blinded from his anger and he started a war with them, killing Rumen in the process. When Rumen died Nikolay had nothing but hate for Radko. Even after years of good political relationship Nikolay never started loving Radko again, and now he means nothing to him.

But even though Radko hates Nikolay, deep inside of him is just the need for his older brother's love. Radko will never admit, even in front of himself, that all he wants is Nikolay to care for him, that he needs to feel understood and protected, that he just wants Nikolay to hug him tightly while Radko is crying and to tell him that everything is going to be alright and that he will always be there for his little brother.

/The only thing that gave hope for their relationship in the future is that Rumen came back to life/
