Dany appears and viserion dies. A temporary win for the living. A dead wilding turns to wight and they decide to sail south to show cercei. 7x06 ending is the same as does the whole ep of 7x07 plus Davos finds Gendry. Bron decides to go with tyrion .

After the battle Danys army is very small (some Dothrakis and some Unsullied) uncapable to fight alone against cercei. Dany cuts her braid to show her sadness for her lost dothraki horde and her personal defeat. Dany asks from Jon not to tell Sansa and he refuses . He tells Sansa, Sansa tells tyrion. They start riding south all together by the kings road . Dany is angry bc now she have not an army and she inform her counsel that she will burn whatever it needs to take the throne. Varys tells her also about the wildfire that might be under the city as his birds told him. Arya suggest to sneak into the city and kills Cercei - Dany agrees but she has her doubts and Tyrion Jon are negative . Sansa has told tyrion about Jon . Tyrion tells Varys and Varys afraid of the wildfire does a conspiracy against Dany and in front of Jon. Only Tyrion goes outside the gates of kings landing and tells cercei to surrender and that Jamie is dead after danys approval as last chance to make peace with cercei .

Ep 5 -The Iron Throne- starts the same.Dany is a completely mess. She talks with greyworm about missandei and gets rejected from Jon again and she reminds him that she lost everything for him. Tyrion says Dany about Varys and when he sees that Dany burns Varys he betrays dany and go to the red keep behind Arya and the hound to save Cercei . Greyworm informs Dany for the Imps treachery. Yara arrives with a small fleet. Dany attacks with drogon before yara. She burns some ships and then the gates . Yara kills euron. The golden company is inside the city and the Lannister army to the gate of the red keep with the people of kings landing. Dany burns the walls of kings landing and allow the northern army and her small army of unsullied to pass and attack the city. Dany watches for above. Cerceis army is winning and northern men start to retreat. Dany makes a decision. She burns the parts of the city where they are golden company soldiers and end up at red keeps gate . She burns it down as she does the Lannister soldiers and the thousands people that cercei had as a meat shied. She continues with the red keep. The northern army then attacks and get into the red keep. Hound and Arya the same. The cleganebowl happens the same way. Arya with Jamies face go to kill Cercei and when they meet Cercei tells Quiburn to trigger the last plan. Arya realizes that they mean the wildfire. She takes of the mask , leave Cercei and go for Quiburn and she kills him before he triggers the wildfire. After that the wildfire blows and the whole city burns down bc of Dany . Greyworm killed by danys fire . Arya dies in her way out the king landing . Cercei meet Tyrion in the map room and she believes he’s there to kill her so she tries to kill the imp with a knife . tyrion has no other chance that choke her . Dany lands inside the throne room with drogon and burns down the iron throne.

Ep6. -A Dream of Spring- Jon walls inside kings landing , Jon finds a burned corpse holding needle . When he realizes he mourns . . He sees that the unsullied keep killing any Lannister soldier left. he leaves to go find dany .Dany has her speech and Tyrion throws his hand pin. . She execute him right there . Jon is completely shocked. When she turns to leave dany tells Jon something like “if u or your sister ever go against me both of u will have the same end” and leaves. Davos tells Jon that Varys has spread his true identity and now he will always be a threat to Dany and that Sansa will never kneel to her after Aryas and Tyrions murders . Then Jon finds her in the throne room they talk and after they embrace one last time Jon kills her with his sword . Jon full in tears leaves the throne room when drogon arrive and mourns for his mother before he flies away with her. The dragonpit counsel happens but Jon is the one that leading it . Sansa tells him that he is the king and he refuse it . He tells he don’t want to be king and he will never be no matter what . Sansa wants her kingdom independent and the other lords wants theirs too. Then Sam suggest the democratic way of choosing a king and his new role as more symbolic and counseling while every kingdom is free. They agree and they choose bran bc he can know everything that have happened and can be the most objective in case of argues. Jon bends the knee to Bran the Broken and leaves for the real north where he’s really happy. Ending scene the same but instead of Arya sailing , Brans coronation.

Summary: When Kala becomes engaged to another kingdom, threats are made to her and her family. That’s when they hire the new, and intense, security guard to keep her safe. Turns out, they both need each other beyond the job requirements.

A/N: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOIN GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR

When Kala was young, she knew she was going to be Queen. She knew that she was the oldest and there were no males born before her - she would, someday, be Queen. Envisioning herself was always like her mother - dawned in the robes she had admired as a child, a crown placed on her head next to a man she loved - instead, she is met with this scene; gunfire and screaming people, clutching at the arm of her bodyguard and the man she was falling for. How she could feel safe around Wolfgang Bogdanow after everything she knew, she had no idea.

Kala’s father, Sanyam, was frantic that day, his forehead broken in a hard sweat and he was nervous. Too many things going on for him to feel at ease. And of course, the heat of the kitchen wasn’t helping. Whenever her father was nervous, he would cook. He would cook really well normally, but he cooked particularly well when he was stressed. Walking in, there were a few scattered security guards helping her father prepare a meal, all in aprons and following her father’s instructions as always.

It was always a sight to see some of her favourite security guards being flustered. Will Gorski, a friend Kala could confide in, was watching over her father’s shoulder to sneak instructions and find out if he was doing the right thing. It was always a comfort to know that Kala wasn’t the only one that tried to maintain other hobbies when she was stressed - for her father, it was cooking; for Kala, it was science. Her father was always encouraging of her education, and even had their home build a small lab where Kala could work in her downtime.

Will turned to put in a dozen spices that her father had told him to, sneaking a look up to kala, who was hidden by some of the door. He smiled before gesturing her inside. Pushing herself into the kitchen, Will gave a soft bow before giving her a wide smile.

“Your Highness,” he teased. Will and Kala had grown up together, his father being head of security for nearly thirty years before he retired. Will was one of Kala’s only friends, their bond a close yet foreign one; will was always more confident than Kala was when talking to people or being open about who he was. Though she has become more confident over the years, expressing herself and will helping her, she still found his words too true for her private heart.

“Hello, Will,” she smiled as he rounded the bench. Will kissed at her cheek, an act that would frowned upon in any other kingdom, but they were far too close for those titles to mean much.

“Oh, hello sweetheart,” her father greeted. Her father gave Will a look, who in turn, started to untie his apron.

“I’ll be right outside, your Majesty,” Will whispered, walking out of the room with the other security team. Kala held her hands together tightly as her father hurried around the kitchen some more.

“What’s the matter?” she asked, watching as the other men left the kitchen finally.

“What -” her father tried but as Kala huffed, he stopped.

“You’re making Will cook with you,” she remarked with a smile. Her father chuckled. “What’s going on?”

“We’ve been receiving some distressing letters,” he sighed, his head hanging low as he stirred a pot.

“Concerning?” Kala asked, moving around the bench to meet with her father.

“Your recent engagement,” he replied.

“Why would people -”

“They do not wish for you to marry someone so far from our lands and to have rights to our kingdom,” he explained. “My dear, you know that when you marry Rajan, you will no longer be the reigning monarch of these lands. Your words will always be less than that of your husband. It’s how our lives have been dictated,” he gave a shrug, knowing that any monarchy is horrible for women, no matter their royal stature.

“You’ve listened to mother,” Kala tried. Her father took her hand, laying a kiss upon her knuckles.

“Because I value her words, her advice. I rely on her. But, she has never made discussions, unfortunately,” he said, his eyes saddened. Over the years, Kala knew that her father talked with her mother, Priya, every day, they discussed everything just so that he had someone to talk to - for counsel and hope. It was all that Kala ever wanted.

“People are upset that he isn’t from a closer kingdom?”

“People are upset that he doesn’t know our kingdom. It’s a very different thing,” he corrected. “You have added security to your personal team,” he said, making his way around the kitchen to make sure all the appliances and stoves were switched off. Kala’s brow furrowed.

“What? But -”

“Kala,” he stopped her. As she looked at Sanyam, his lip quivered and his shoulders were softened, as though talking about this further was weakening him. “Why do you think I’m in this kitchen? I am worried for you,” he said, wiping at his forehead. Kala sighed, walking to Sanyam and embracing him.

“Alright,” she said, kissing his cheek and making her way out of the kitchen. The moment her father was left alone, security came rushing in, just to make sure his safety was ensured. The idea that one day Kala would be consumed by security, that he own life would never be her own, was a somewhat terrifying thought.

As she walked out of the kitchen, she was met with Will, walking down the hall and heading towards the main foyer. “He tell you?” he asked, his suit nicely lined up rather than his suit jacket missing and his sleeves rolled up. Now, he looked the part of a fitting and strict head of security.

“Yes,” she nodded, her sweater too large and gathering at her hands. She bound her fingers into the loose holes nervously. “Is this really something to worry about?”

Will shrugged. “At the moment, I think everything will be fine.”

“But the future?” she asked timidly.

“That’s why we’ve hired more security,” he smirked and Kala laughed. As they reached the foyer, Kala saw three women walking towards them. Riley Blue, Nomi Marks and Amanita Caplan; a few women she called her friends as well as her own personal counsel.

As Kala became older, she knew she had to take up more responsibility; so, through knowing a few women from university, she started to gain more confidence in initiating new plans into the public. Riley, Amanita, Nomi, Sun, Will, Capheus, Dani, Lito and Hernando were all members of her counsel but also played huge parts of her life and education. When Kala implemented the plan to help young women have more resources and better educations, especially in science, her entire counsel and team were behind her, helping her through each step and having her back through it all.

Kala looked over to Will, who was smiling ear to ear at Riley. Kala had known about them for a while; walking past a hallway where they stole kisses was probably the biggest give away for them. As Will noticed Kala staring, he straightened and tried to avoid eye-contact with Riley. Kala’s hip nudged at Will’s.

“It’s fine,” she whispered, which Will did a double take between her and Riley.

“How did you -”

“Will, you talk more to Riley now than you do to me. Go,” she smiled before urging him onwards. He met up with Riley, embracing her tightly as she kissed at his cheek. Kala was soon met with Amanita and Nomi.

“They finally tell you?” Nomi asked as she took Kala into her arms. Amanita followed suit.

“I worked it out,” Kala shrugged as they began walking the length of the foyer. It was long and wide, all white besides the decorations their family had put up across the years. Their pace was slow, wanting some time for chatter before any meetings would be conducted. “Where’s Sun?” she asked.

“She had to work today. Her father is really on her back,” Nomi replied and Kala sighed.

“Isn’t he always?” she said, tucking hair behind her ear and chewing on her lip.

“What’s got you in a fluster, sugar?” Amanita asked, her arm tying in with Kala’s in worry.

“Just security concerns,” Kala said, rubbing at her forehead.

Amanita gasped. “Nom, what did you -”

“No. But if you’ve been hacking us again, please patch up the firewall. I would love you for it,” Kala replied, taking hold of Nomi’s hand. Nomi likes to test the palace and its security from time to time. Eventually Kala just hired Nomi to hack the palace to make sure security is up to standard.

“Then what is it, babe?” Amanita asked.

“The engagement has a lot of people upset. They’re amping up my security,” Kala groaned and Amanita tutted, bringing Kala’s head down to her shoulder.

“I hope they’re cute,” Amanita confessed and Kala rose in surprise, but she really shouldn’t have been. Kala gave a small giggle as Nomi leaned over Kala slightly.

“Neets, I think Kala would like someone to help her out if she’s in trouble,” she remarked before turning to Kala. “But seriously, if they’re cute, let us know.” Kala laughed.

“You are no help,” she shook her head.

“Come on, we’ve got another meeting to go to!” Amanita said, racing head and taking hold of Nomi’s hand.

“Neets, calm down!” Nomi giggled, moving a few room ahead before making their way into a conference room they were always stationed in.

Kala liked having normal friends. She used to have real ‘ladies-in-waiting’, but it was never the same as someone treating you like normal. It took begging and pleading for Kala to go to university and have a range of friends, but hiring her friends to be consultants and counsel was almost unheard of. No staff was allowed to be informal with the royal family, but Kala strived for it, making sure that the people who knew her only ever talked to her like they would anyone else.

Riley whistled and Kala turned to see her friend racing over as Will clapped his hand on the shoulder of a new man. He was tall like Will, but had stronger features and dusty blond hair. Kala couldn’t make out much else, but she stared - something about him made her keep her eye on him for longer than necessary. He even watched back. Finally, Will and the mystery man were out of sight and Riley was greeting Kala like always.

“Who was that?” Kala asked, gesturing to Will and the man.

“Not sure. Will has a meeting with him,” Riley shrugged before they continued to their meeting.

It wasn’t until several days later that Kala finally got her answer.

Sitting in her lab, Kala was finishing up an experiment on different metals and to see if their metals would be easier and safer for construction purposes. She was writing down many of her results before she was going to send them to Sun, who was helping her with small businesses and construction around the kingdom. She heard the doors open and close, a few different footsteps walking into the lab.

“Your highness? I would like to -” Will started before Kala raised her finger, shushing him for just a moment.

“One moment, Will. I'm just finishing up here,” she interrupted.

“Alright, Kala,” he scoffed.

“Since when are security staff allowed to address royalty like that?” a different and unfamiliar voice asked.

“Since I grew up with the princess and she hates it when I call her princess or ‘your highness’ for long periods of time,” Will retorted and Kala smiled. She put her pen down before rising from her chair.

“Yes, sorry, I was -” she started but was caught off guard. She was met with the man she could only guess was the same from barely a week beforehand. She was right about his strong features, with a thick jaw and eyes that were intense in even a soft gaze - he was gorgeous and strangely intoxicating. “busy,” she finished, clearing her throat. He straightened suddenly before he bowed.

“Your Highness,” the man greeted.

“And who might this be?” she turned to will, hoping that she wasn’t breaking out into a blush.

“Wolfgang Bogdanow. New Security,” Will confirmed. Kala stood for a moment before she broke into a giggle - not for his name or what his role was, but because she was nervous.

“Sorry,” she remarked, covering her “I wasn’t told you were coming today. I’m a little flustered,” she let out a soft breath.

“No need on my account,” Wolfgang replied slyly, and Kala felt her breath get caught in her throat.

“Kala!” Another voice radiated through the lab. Her father this time. He came rushing in, making everyone bow and curtsy. “I see you’ve met Wolfgang,” he said, clapping a hand to Wolfgang’s shoulder. “You two will be spending nearly every minute together, so I do hope you get along,” he smiled and Kala swallowed hard. She nodded to her father before moving off towards another room, feeling two men walking behind her - as always.

Shutting the door to the bathroom, she leaned against the wood, running her hands over her head. Kala bound her hands to her chest, cheeks flushing hard. He wasn’t allowed to do this to her - he wasn’t able to do that. He only said a sentence to her it was enough to have her feeling weak at the knees? She was a princess! She didn’t get flustered. But, God, he was doing doing it well. Kala pushed herself off the door, touching at her face to see if her fingers would cool her hottening skin. Gathering water from the sink, she splashed some in her face, the right amount of cool to regain her senses. A knock at the door caused Kala to bit at her lip and look up to see her face still in a fluster.

“Capheus is in the car, Your Highness,” Wolfgang said in an unmoving tone. “Dani, Lito, and Hernando are waiting,” he reminded and Kala cleared her throat, combing hair out of her face and looking at her reflection. She was a princess. She was better than this. Moving her shoulders back, she exited the bathroom and walked out to the car zone, not looking back and tempting herself with the image of her new security.

Sliding into her seat in the car, Capheus turned from his driver seat, both watching out the window as Wolfgang started to direct and tell people the plan for today’s visit as well as being informed on how the security likes to work.

“And the man walking behind you that looks like he could kill me?” Capheus asked and Kala shook her head.

“Wolfgang. New security,” she replied, fixing up her skirt.

“He looks intense. kinda scary,” he said. As Kala looked out the window, she watched as he huffed and talked, then the glances he threw to her - they were two different people, something soft and forgiving whenever his eyes met hers.

“I don’t know. There’s something else there,” she said as Wolfgang took his place in the front seat with Capheus. Throughout the trip, Capheus would ask Wolfgang question, to which he would reply with grunts and short answers. There was a part of Kala that wanted to ask the same thing to see if he would reply any differently, but knew it would be a hopeless effort.

Arriving outside the university, Kala’s door was opened by Wolfgang who followed her closely. The other security guards were following with a distance that was normal to Kala, but Wolfgang was almost walking arm in arm with her. It was a foreign concept that she was able to walk like that with a stranger. “You know, I’m not usually followed so closely,” she told him. Wolfgang buttoned up his suit jacket and held his arms firmly to either side of him.

“I’m just making sure you’re safe,” he said, voice harsh with caution.

“I’m not going to fall over and die, Wolfgang,” she joked and Wolfgang looked over to her, a look on his face that could be surprise mixed with happiness but it was soon gone. “I do, however, appreciate your diligent work,” she remarked.

“Thank you, Your Highness,” he replied and Kala scoffed.

“If we’re going to be around each other every day, please just call me Kala,” she suggested.

Wolfgang tilted his head before he smirked. “I’ll make an effort to try it, Your Highness.”

“Now you’re just teasing,” she smiled.

“Too obvious?” he asked and a smile appeared on his lips. Kala didn’t know why, but it felt like a smile reserved just for her - a smile she could keep and know it was always meant for her. “These people you’re meeting with, who are they exactly?” he asked.

“Dani, Lito, and Hernando were some of my tutors in university. They were all involved in the arts. They’re my friends and they’re part of my counsel,” she explained, recalling the days where Hernando would talk about art and Kala, Lito and Dani would sit around in awe of his passion for it all. It was what inspired Kala to keep art living alongside science in their kingdom.

“But why are you meeting with them?” he asked.

Kala shrugged. “Because it’s easier. They have jobs and other things to do. I have an arts event in a few weeks and want their opinion and direction, it’s just easier to be in their environment.”

Wolfgang’s brow furrowed as he opened up a door to the university. “Isn’t that more of unfamiliar territory?” he asked. Kala smiled.

“Yes, but doesn’t that make it more fun?” she said, watching as another one of those special smiles appeared on his lips. Kala continued inside, guiding Wolfgang to a room towards the back. He opened up the door to her usual room. Lito, Hernando and Dani all turned to see Wolfgang and Kala at the door, smiling and looking curiously at the new man. “I’ll be okay in here,” Kala said. Wolfgang tucked a hand into his pocket, worry setting in. Kala huffed, urging him out of the room. “I promise.”

Wolfgang resigned. “I’ll be right outside. You can see me through the window,” he told her and she nodded.

“Thank you, Wolfgang,” she replied before shutting the door.

“Lito, did you see the new guy,” Dani said, hitting Lito’s arm before racing over to Kala. They embraced shortly before Kala moved down to the front and took a seat next to Lito in front of Hernando.

“Kala, you have to tell me who that is,” Lito leaned over and whispered.

“Lito, you have a boyfriend,” Kala reminded, to which Hernando nodded to Lito.

“No, we both want to know,” he shrugged, leaning down and kissing Lito in a short peck.

“He’s part of my new security team,” Kala said, tucking hair behind her ear.

“He is handsome,” Dani said, biting at her lip.

“He’s not really my type,” Lito shrugged.

“He’s everyone’s type, baby,” Hernando scoffed. As Kala avoided everyone’s gaze, tucking hair behind her ear and fiddling with the edge of her skirt, Lito suddenly leaned against her arm.

“I think we know who else likes him,” he said in a sly, playful voice.

“Kala!” Dani squeaked excitedly.

“Please stop,” she said, feeling the creeping heat rush over her cheeks. “I think you’re all forgetting something,” she started. “I’m engaged.”

“No one says you can’t have fun,” Dani said, kissing at Kala’s cheek.

“When you’re in line for the throne, I think fun is out of the question,” Kala reminded.

“He seems like a wildfire,” Hernando said, glancing up towards the window. Everyone turned to see Wolfgang half looking inside and half glancing around outside - constantly looking after Kala. “There’s something in his eyes,” he sighed wonderfully. Kala had to agree with Hernando there.

six || ashton irwin

the part two of "three". which was kind of requested.

“Mommy, where dis from?” You turn to see your 3 year old son, Logan, holding the lion that Thomas had adored.

“Hey, where'd you get that bubs?” Ashton says coming around the corner.

“It was in my room!” He exclaimed. “Can I have it?”

Ashton could already sense that you weren't in love with the idea. You were very protective of the few things you'd kept of Thomas’, he'd been so young and hadn't had a lot.

“I'll talk to Mom, see if I can't convince her.” Ash ruffled Logan’s curls and picked him up, resting him on his hip. He comes around the counter and presses a kiss to your cheek. “Hey beautiful, how’re you?”

“Good, Ash. How was rehearsal?” You turn to kiss him on the lips.

“It was good. I told Calum he could bring everyone over for dinner.” He smiles. “We’ll grill. But we thought it'd be nice to get the kids together.”

“I'm not…” you sigh, “really feeling up to it.” You shrug. Ashton knew you'd been struggling the last few months. The band’s schedule was amping up again, and it had you in a downward spiral.

It worried Ash, he didn't want to leave you home with Logan when it seemed like you were falling apart, but he also wasn't sure he wanted Logan on the road. He hoped that if you had some quality time with Cal and Whitney, who were both very good friends of yours, it may pull you out of your funk.

Logan was the spitting image of his father, and therefore his brother. And you adored him. Of course you did, he's your baby, and Ash is the best dad. And absolutely he was your best friend and your partner in everything.

Marriage had started to come up more often. Ashton had started to feel like he wanted to get married, and you weren't opposed to the idea anymore. Your couples counseling had opened you both up to it. After everything you'd been through, you couldn't think of a single thing you wouldn't want him by your side for, and he felt the same way.

“Logan, why don't you go play bud? Uncle Cal will be over in a little while with his kids.” Ash sets Logan down and he tries to hand the lion to him, “no bud, you can play with it.” Ash nods at him and he runs off. He turns to you and holds his arms open, you quickly fit yourself against him. And he holds you tight. He presses his lips to your forehead, “thought it might be a nice way to relax, anything I can do to help?”

“I don't think so babe. I just… I don't know. I just don't feel up to it.”

“It's just Cal and his family babe, they get it.” He explains.

“I know… sorry I'm a mess lately Ash.” You pull away and shrug. You push the hair that's fallen in your face up.

“Baby. Don't apologize. Life hasn't been easy on us in the last few years. But we're ok now. We've got us, we've got Logan now. We're discussing a ring and maybe another kiddo.”

“I know Ash. We're solid. It's not us... It's me.” You sigh, “And I'm not even sure what about me.” You shrug.

“Been thinking maybe you and Logan should come on tour with us, if you want. I don't want to leave you alone if you don't want to be alone.” Ash worded it in a way so as not to make you feel bad, and you knew it, but it didn't bother you. He had your best interest at heart.

“Maybe babe. Maybe I just need to see someone.” You shrug again.

“Well baby, just tell me whatever you need. We’ll get it for you. Ok?” He asks, putting his hand under your chin so you'd look at him.

You nod, “ok Ash.”

“You wanna go change before Cal and them get here? I'll keep an eye on Logan.”

“Sure... ok.” You agree. You turn to walk out of the kitchen.

Ashton reaches out and grabs your wrist, pulling you back to him. “I love you.” He whispers, before kissing you hard.

“I love you Ash. Seriously. Thank you… for our life.” You whisper back.

You had 45 minutes before Cal showed up with Whitney and kids in tow. There was a knock on the door frame. You looked up and immediately smiled at Cal standing there. “Hey handsome.”

“Hey beautiful.” He grins, walking into you and Ash’s room, closing the distance, engulfing you in a hug. He squeezed you extra tight, “when are you going to make an honest man out of Ash?” He asks, pulling away.

“When he finally asks.” You laugh.

Calum rests a hand on the back of your neck, “how are you? You ok lately? Ash is worried about you.”

“I'm getting by. And I know he is, I'm doing the best I can.” You shrug.

“Well I know he wants you to have a relaxing night, so all you're on the hook for is to just chill.” He grins. “You're doing good babe. I promise. Now come on.” He drops his hand from your neck and grabs your hand, pulling you down stairs with him.

The kids are all playing together in the living room, despite Calum’s three all being at least a few years older than Logan. In fact his youngest was only a couple months older than Thomas would have been.

His oldest, a boy, is more or less monitoring the other three. His girl, the middle child, was trying to take care of Logan. And his youngest, also a boy, was trying to play with the lion as well. You dropped Calum’s hand so you could go in and say hi.

“Hey kiddos!” You smile. Immediately Cal’s kids are surrounding you, wanting hugs. You sit down so you're on their level, and give them all hugs.

His daughter is the last to give you a hug, and she leaves her hands on your shoulders. “Is that Thomases lion?” She asks quietly.

“Yeah it is, but Ash and I agree that he should have it, since he never got to know him.”

“I miss him.” She says simply.

“Me too, baby girl.” You give a half smile.

She wraps her arms around your neck again. “We’re ok.” She whispers.

“Thanks babe.” You kiss her forehead and get up.

When you walk in the kitchen you immediately notice that Whitney appears to be pregnant again, and you vaguely remember Ashton saying something about it. “Hey Whit.” You smile at her, she's uncovering a bunch of the food her and Cal had brought over.

“Hey you! We brought beer, you want one?” She asks, engulfing you in a hug.

“Sure! How far along?” You ask.

“Ugh, 4 months.” She groaned. “Can't believe I let him do this to me again.”

“Aww he's so happy though.” You laugh. “Ash would kill to have me pregnant again. He's so good and attentive though. I wouldn't mind. Neither of the pregnancies have been bad.”

“And you're an amazing mother. Your kids are lucky.” She smiles. “and Ash knows how damn lucky he is to have you.” She assures. “Shit, I'd leave Cal for you…. but he'd leave me for you too sooo.” You both laugh.

“You're a great mom too Whit, your kids are amazing.”

“Hey they're my kids too!” Cal says, coming in the back door behind Ash.

“Can I get one of these?” Ash asks, coming up behind you and wrapping an arm around you before taking a drink of your beer.

Whit reaches into the fridge and grabs one for Ash and Cal. “Alright kids, let's go play outside!” She calls.

The kids come through in a line. “Stay away from the grill.” Ash warns, “hey Logan, let's leave the lion inside bud. I'll put it up for later.” He holds his hand out and Logan happily agrees, giving Ash the lion.

You gently pull it from Ash’s hand, completely missing that Cal and Whitney walk outside with the kids. But Ash stays with you, his hand on your hip. You stare at the little stuffed lion for a minute or two before pulling it to your chest and letting out a quiet sob. Ash is immediately wrapping his arms around you. “S’ok.” He whispers.

“I was doing so good.” You whimper, allowing yourself to cling back to Ashton. “What if I'm never right again, what if I'm always broken?”

Ashton held you tight for a few minutes before he pulled away. His large hands cup your face. “You aren't broken babe. Just like I'm not broken. You are doing great.”

“How are you so ok?” You whimper.

“I see you hurting enough for both of us. I know you're trying though baby. I see that. And I hurt, it's just not as external as you…” he gently pulls the toy from you. “You know I want to spend my life with you. You are my partner in everything. Nothing else matters if I've got you. We've been through shit. But we've gotten through it together. I can do anything with you.” He sighs. “And I wasn't gonna do this now. I wanted it to be special. But will you marry me?”

“Ash…” you whisper.

“Come on babe, you knew it was coming.” He chuckles, “don't leave me hanging.” He whispers, mainly to fill the silence. He was beginning to get nervous.

“Baby, you know I'm on board for that with you.” You finally say.

“My girl.” He whispers, engulfing you in a hug. “Come with me, I have the ring upstairs.”

“Ash.” You giggle, as he drags you up the stairs. “You wanna do this now?” You ask, as he rifles through a drawer.

“Yes, because this shows you, even when you aren't your best, you are still everything I want in life. The only person I want next to me, when we're dealing with the worst, and loving through the best.” He drops to his knee in front of you and slips the ring on your finger.

“Of course babe, you're my partner in crime.” You whisper, a smile spreading across your face.

Ash wasn't naive enough to think that this would solve everything, or even anything in particular. But he knew what he wanted. He held your hand and pulled you back downstairs.

He was excited that Calum and Whit would be the first people to know about the engagement. They also knew it was a long time coming.

When you guys head back outside, Whit and Cal could both tell you'd been crying.

“Are you ok?” Whit exclaims.

You just nod your head and hold up your hand with the new ring. Ashton smiles widely, “We’re engaged.”

Both of them grin wide and Cal instantly gets up to hug you both and congratulate you.

Things seemed to turn around for you over the next couple weeks. But as you watched Ashton start to pack, you kind of started to lose it again. Taking on Logan and wedding planning alone was terrifying to you.

Ashton could tell this wasn't easy on you. The way you sat on the bed, wrapped in one of his hoodies, was almost alarming to him.

You let out a little sigh as he put another shirt in his suitcase. He looked up to you. He looked slightly disheveled. His hair wasn't as styled as normal, and he had his glasses on. You adored it.

“Babe?” He asks, sitting next to you.

“M’ok.” You whisper.

“You are. You're amazing.” He cups your face. “I'm always a phone call away. We've done this before.” He assures.

“The circumstances feel different.” You reply tiredly.

Ashton kissed your forehead and pulled his suitcase to the floor so he could cuddle you. “Come on babe. It's ok.” He rubbed your back, trying to soothe you.

“Ash, we haven't really been apart since Thomas got sick. I'm not sure I'm strong enough for this.” You admit.

“You guys can come out on tour?”

“I don't want us to be a distraction for you.” You pull away and sit up and start fiddling with the sleeves of the hoodie you're wearing.

“I have no problem having you on the road. We've all done it.” He reaches for your hand.

You nod your head. “I love you. I'm actually excited to marry you, which I never thought I'd say. I'm lucky to have you Ash. I know I am.” You sigh and squeeze his hand. “I wanna try. I just feel so overwhelmed right now.”

“If it's the wedding… that can wait, until we can plan it together. It doesn't have to be done by the time I get back. I want to be apart of that process with you.” Ash moves so your body is nestled closely to his, his arms are wrapped protectively around you, and your head rests against his chest. You let out a quiet whimper. “Let it out, my love.” He whispers.

Ash spends the next couple days doing everything he can think of to give you space and let you relax and clear your head. He takes Logan to rehearsal with him to give you a day off, and he sends you out to get pampered. And when you're home for the night and Logan is fast asleep, Ash shows you physical love and you cling to him like you can't get enough. Which he loves.

“I'm gonna miss you.” You whisper.

Ash has you tucked under one arm and he's holding Logan in the other. “I'm just a phone call away… it's a couple months, and if that's not enough, then you can come out at any time.” He assures. “And you know I'm gonna miss you. I don't know how I survive without you.” He admits.

“I love you Ash.” You look up at him, and cling a little tighter.

“I love you.” He replies, kissing you. He takes a minute with Logan and hands him off to you. You turn to walk away before Ash can see you cry, though he spent a literal year watching you grieve and cry over Thomas.

It takes you approximately 3 weeks before you've had enough. You needed Ash. Logan is a great kid, but he misses his dad and so do you.

Your nerves are shot after traveling with Logan, so you can't get to the venue and backstage soon enough.

He wouldn't leave the house without the lion, and you didn't want him to take it in case he lost it. So you'd had to compromise with the three year old. He could have it as long as he was sitting, otherwise it had to go into his backpack.

You walked through the back stage door, and Calum and Luke were standing there talking. They both hugged you and Cal picked up Logan.

“I miss mine being this size.” He laughs. You muster as much of a smile as you can. Cal wraps an arm around your shoulders, he can tell your frazzled. “I'm gonna take this one to eat, Ash is in the dressing room if you'd like to go find him.” He kisses the side of your head.

“Thank you.” You whisper. You run your hand over Logan’s curls. “You're gonna go eat with uncle Cal and Uncle Luke, bub.” You explain.

He smiles. “Lion?”

“Yes Logan, uncle Cal can get the lion out when you're sitting down.” You agree.

“Ok, give mom a kiss.” Cal coaxes him. Logan leans over and kisses your cheek. You rub his back and smile at him and off they go.

You turn to head in the direction Luke pointed out for you. You see Mike walk out of the room first, he smiles at you but doesn't say anything to Ash who walks out after him, “she should be here by now.” He says worriedly, staring at his phone.

“Ash.” You say loudly. His head immediately snaps up and he grins. You drop your bags and run at him. He wraps his arms around you and when he picks you up, you take it as a cue to wrap your legs around his waist. He holds you like that for a while. You look over at Mike who's checking his phone. “Sorry Mike.”

Ashton puts you down and kisses you. Mike shrugs, “ya know what? I would kill for my wife to get that excited to see me.” He muses.

“Where's Logan?” Ash asks.

“Cal took him to get food.” You shrug.

“We were just headed that way.” He admits. Ash grabs your hand and then takes you to catering for food. “How are you? It's really good to see you babe.” He smiles at you.

“I'm doing much better now. Logan was a handful. Thanks for letting us come out.” You reply quietly.

Logan hears Ash as you approach catering and he immediately launches out of his seat, clinging tightly to the lion and he flings himself at his father. “Hey bud.” Ash picks him up and squeezes him. “Missed you.”

“We missed you daddy.” He says, holding up the lion.

Ashton smiles and kisses Logan’s cheek, and the lion when he shoves it in his face.

Ash holds him while the three of you eat, laughing and talking with the rest of the guys. He looks over at you as you move food around on your plate. “You ok? You didn't eat much.”

You let out a breath and sit back in your chair, you nod. “I'm ok. Just not very hungry.” You shrug. He drops it but you can tell by the look on his face that you'll be talking about it later.

You let Logan stay up and watch the show, Ash puts him to bed immediately after. When he boards the bus after everyone has showered and they've done their post show rituals, he finds you, knees pulled to your chest, sitting in the back.

“Babe?” He asks. You look up and hold out a hand which Ashton grabs.

“M’just tired Ash. I promise.” You say. “It was a long day.”

“You've been tired a lot lately, and anxious and overwhelmed, and you haven't been hungry. Are you sure you're ok? Do you need something I'm not giving you?” He asks, sitting next to you.

You let out a little sigh and lean your head on his shoulder. The rest of the guys peek in and see you two in there together and change their minds, quickly re directioning themselves out of the bunk area where Logan is sleeping.

“I should have stayed home, I'm already disrupting everyone.” You get off the couch and walk up to the front lounge where everyone is on their phones. “You guys can go do what you do, sorry. I… we were just talking, I didn't mean to be in the way.” You find a seat toward the front, away from everyone.

Ashton walks out and spots you. He starts walking towards you, but Cal stops him.

“I don't know what it is, but give her space. I'll stay up here with her.” He pats his shoulder and Ash turns back, you watch as he checks on Logan and heads back to the back lounge.

Cal takes a seat closer to you. But he doesn't prompt you to talk. You can tell he's texting Whit by the grin on his face. It's one that's reserved for his girls.

“I feel like I can't do anything right.” You murmur. “He can't even count on me to stay home and take care of our son without him.” You let out a sigh. “And what's worse is it always feels like something's missing. Even with Ash. I mean I love Logan, don't get me wrong here, but…” you let your sentence trail. Even though you're picking at your nails, you know Cal is looking at you, paying full attention to everything you're saying.

“Hey.” He says quietly, you look up at him and he's holding out his hands which you grab. “You guys were dealt a shit hand, ok? And honestly, neither of you are great at hiding the fact that it's destroying you still, and that's ok. Because you've got each other and I swear Ash would be so damn lost without you, he doesn't mind how much you need him. And you've always got me and Whit. Even four years later, none of us think it's weird or out of the ordinary that you need to be with Ash. We can't even begin to fathom the pain you both felt.” He pauses, undoubtedly collecting his thoughts. He's known for a while he'd need to give this speech. “It's not surprising you don't feel you can do it without him. Shit we were all nervous the first time we left our wives and kids to go on tour. And I know it's not the first time for you, but your anxiety is valid. The last time Ash left for tour when you had a kid, he came home and you guys got the worst news ever. And of course something is missing. Thomas is, and he always will be. But you've got Logan, and he needs and loves his mom very much. Even though he's a much bigger handful.” Cal smiles gently at you.

You let out a shaky breath, tears streaming down your cheeks.

“Let him help you babe. That's all he wants. He's so worried about you.” Cal says, pulling you into a hug.

“I just feel like I'm letting him down, or bothering him.” You whimper, still tight against Cal’s chest.

“Well you're not, and if he says otherwise then you come to me and I'll set him straight and help you. I promise.” Cal pulls away slightly and holds out his pinky. You sniff and shake your head but hold yours out and hook it around his. “That's my girl.” He whispers, then presses his lips to your forehead. “I'm always available to talk.” He promises.

You pull away and you both head to the back lounge. Ashton is standing in the bunks, changing. He looks like he had probably been crying.

“I was just gonna go to bed.” he whispers.

You press yourself against him, making room for Calum to go through. “I'll go too then.”

“Can we talk?” He whispers. His hands work at the button and zipper on your pants, and you nod your head. He helps you out of your jeans and digs through your bag for the shorts he knows you're gonna wear to bed. He helps you slide them up your legs and then you grab his hand and pull him out of the bunks.

“I feel like… me not being able to take care of Logan alone is letting you down.” You admit. “And maybe not being able to take care of him isn't the right way to phrase it. Because I'm capable. I just don't wanna do it without you.”

“You aren't letting me down.” He licks his lips, gathers his thoughts. “You are doing your best. I know this has to be hard on you, it's hard on me.” He admits. “I wanna be home with you.”

“I also feel like I'm judging your grief, because it doesn't match mine, and that's not fair to you because your are taking such good care of me and Logan. I know losing Thomas wasn't easy on either of us, but you've always been one step ahead of me in the healing process. And I guess, me not being where you are, makes me feel like I'm disappointing you. And needing you so badly is disrupting you and your career. I just feel like I'm not being fair.”

“You know I tried to push the tour off because I knew you weren't quite ready. But I felt... ok, knowing you'd let me know when and if you needed me. Ever since we went to counseling you've been very good about that, so I relied on it. Baby, just know I expected this, and you honestly lasted longer than I thought you might. You aren't bothering me, the guys understand. You aren't disrupting me. And there's no proper way to grieve. God, yes I love Thomas, but I didn't carry him for 9 months, so it is a little different. And I know looking at Logan reminds you of him because I see the same thing when I look at him. I see he looks just like Thomas. But I also see his eyes light up when he gets something like you do, he smiles just like you.” Ash rests his hands on your hips. “Babe, I don't want you to get offended, but I think you should talk to someone. Or tell me what you need to do so I can help you.”

“Ash.” You sigh, bringing your hands up, resting one against the back of his neck and the other plays with the hair on the back of his neck. “I have what I need right now. I just need to get used to you not being there. When we go home I'll go to my doctor though and see what's up, ok?”

He nods and leans in to kiss you. “I love you.” He smiles down at you.

Ash wasn't surprised to get the phone call after you went home where you told him the doctor was diagnosing you with depression. He'd recommended bringing in a nanny while getting used to your new meds. And he'd said something to Cal who told Whitney and within 3 days, you and Whitney were sitting down interviewing nannies. Once one was picked you were surprised about how easily you started to relax when it came to Logan.

When Ashton came home for a couple days they had off, he could almost see the old you, the one that existed prior to losing Thomas. And he was thankful and more ready than ever to marry you.

Nunes Protégé Fed Ukraine Info to Trump

Kashyap Patel, a senior National Security Council staffer with no official role on Ukraine policy, had a direct pipeline to the president.

A protégé of Republican Rep. Devin Nunes was among those passing negative information about Ukraine to President Donald Trump earlier this year, fueling the president’s belief that Ukraine was brimming with corruption and interfered in the 2016 election on behalf of Democrats.

Kashyap Patel, a longtime Nunes staffer who joined the White House in February, was so involved in the issue that at one point Trump thought he was in charge of Ukraine policy for the National Security Council, according to congressional testimony by Fiona Hill, the former senior director for European and Russian Affairs whose portfolio included Ukraine.

Hill’s testimony was described to POLITICO by a person with direct knowledge of her recent deposition, and who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the closed-door hearing. Hill declined to comment.

Several White House officials raised alarms internally about Trump undermining the U.S.’ official policy of support for Ukraine in exchange for political favors, with former national security adviser John Bolton instructing Hill to inform White House lawyers about backchannel efforts he compared to a “drug deal.”

The official who replaced Hill in early September, Tim Morrison, formally held the Ukraine portfolio at the NSC. Testimony before House lawmakers has depicted Morrison, a Bolton acolyte, as similarly unnerved by Trump’s desire to withhold all assistance from Ukraine. Morrison also kept the acting U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, William Taylor, abreast of developments inside the White House.

But Patel’s involvement demonstrates that the president had at least some support for the scheme from within the NSC, and has given House impeachment investigators yet another name to add to their witness list—a name they are already familiar with, given Patel’s previous work in Congress to discredit the Russia investigation.

Patel joined the National Security Council’s International Organizations and Alliances directorate in February and was promoted to a senior counterterrorism role around the same time as Trump’s fateful call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he urged the newly elected leader to investigate Biden and “get to the bottom of” Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election.

The type of Ukraine work Patel was doing that Hill described would not be within his purview as a senior counterterrorism adviser, said Joshua Geltzer, who held Patel’s position early on in the Trump administration.

“If true, this sort of activity seems wildly outside the scope of anything a counterterrorism senior director at NSC should be spending their time on,” Geltzer said. “What’s more, it politicizes a piece of the NSC staff that administrations of both parties have worked for decades to keep as apolitical as possible.”

Patel’s name has been brought up in several recent depositions, according to another person with direct knowledge of the interviews, in connection with the shadow foreign policy campaign Trump allegedly directed in an effort to extract political favors from the newly elected Zelensky.

On Tuesday, Taylor — who remains the acting ambassador in Kiev — gave lawmakers one of the most detailed timelines to date of how Trump and his allies sought to leverage American military and diplomatic might to coerce Zelensky into a coordinated campaign to damage Joe Biden, Trump’s chief political rival. Taylor testified that he was told that Trump wanted to withhold security assistance to Ukraine unless Zelensky agreed to announce an investigation into Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company on whose board Biden’s son Hunter served.

Democrats have been especially interested in Patel’s role in the Ukraine scandal given his intensive work as Nunes’ top staffer on the House Intelligence Committee to discredit the FBI and DOJ officials investigating Russia’s election interference.

As the chairman of that committee, Nunes stepped aside from the panel’s Russia investigation in April 2017 and launched a separate inquiry into the origins of the FBI’s counterintelligence probe, which had zeroed in on four Trump campaign aides’ interactions with Russians during the election.

The findings of that parallel investigation were outlined in a 3.5-page memo that Patel, who also served as the panel’s senior counsel, helped write, despite warnings by the Justice Department that its release would be “extraordinarily reckless” because it included classified information and could harm ongoing investigations.

The memo alleges that the FBI used intelligence passed to them by the former British spy Christopher Steele to bolster the bureau’s application for a surveillance warrant targeting an early Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page. It accused the FBI of omitting “the role of the” Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign in paying Steele for his research on the Trump campaign, and led Trump to accuse DOJ and FBI leaders of politicizing “the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats and against Republicans.”

Democrats, meanwhile, accused Nunes and the Republicans of politicizing law enforcement and the Russia investigation in an effort to shield the president.

Prior to that, Patel circulated an internal memo urging Nunes to hold top DOJ and FBI officials in contempt for failing to turn over documents related to the warrant process undertaken during the transition period.

He also traveled to London in 2017—without the knowledge of the U.S. embassy, the British government, or Adam Schiff, then the committee’s ranking member—in search of Steele, whose lawyer denied Patel access to his client.

Patel’s ascension to the NSC staff earlier this year—and particularly his promotion to a senior counterterrorism role that was created for him within the directorate, according to a former official familiar with the matter—raised eyebrows among some in the NSC who didn’t believe he was experienced enough for the role, despite a two-year stint from 2014-2016 as a counterterrorism prosecutor at the Justice Department.

His “unique access” to the West Wing, and the ease with which he has been able to interact directly with the president without NSC leadership’s involvement, has also struck some as unusual, the former official said.

White House Aides Feared That Trump Had Another Ukraine Back Channel

Senior national security officials grew concerned about Kash Patel, a colleague who had been involved in Republicans’ efforts to undermine the Russia investigation.

WASHINGTON — When Kashyap Patel was an aide to the House Intelligence Committee in the first years of the Trump administration, he played a key role in helping Republicans try to undermine the Russia investigation, writing a memo that accused law enforcement officials of abusing their power.

The memo, which consumed Washington for weeks, was widely dismissed as a biased argument of cherry-picked facts. But it galvanized President Trump’s allies and made Mr. Patel a hero among them. After Republicans ceded control of Congress this year, he landed on Mr. Trump’s National Security Council staff.

Colleagues there initially questioned the role of Mr. Patel, who took few notes in meetings and had little expertise for his initial portfolio, which covered the United Nations. Within months, senior White House officials began to suspect he had won Mr. Trump’s ear and had effectively created a back channel to the president that could warp American policy, according to congressional testimony and interviews.

Colleagues grew alarmed after hearing that Mr. Trump had referred to Mr. Patel as one of his top Ukraine policy specialists and that the president wanted to discuss related documents with him, according to people briefed on the matter. Mr. Patel, who is known as Kash, is now assigned to work on counterterrorism issues, not Ukraine.

Any involvement by Mr. Patel in Ukraine issues would mark another attempt by Mr. Trump’s political loyalists to go around American policymakers to shape policy toward Kiev. It was separate, two of the people said, from the irregular, informal channel led by the president’s lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani and Gordon D. Sondland, the American ambassador to the European Union, that is the subject of House Democrats’ impeachment investigation.

Friends of Mr. Patel dismissed the concerns among senior national security officials as conspiracy theories by Mr. Trump’s critics. The White House declined to comment.

House impeachment investigators are scrutinizing Mr. Patel’s actions as well, the people said. The investigators have asked witnesses about Mr. Patel and are trying to determine any role he played in the shadow foreign policy Mr. Trump was conducting as he pushed the Ukrainian government to incriminate his political rivals by announcing investigations into them.

The contents of the documents were not clear, nor was it clear how Mr. Trump got them. Typically, aides prepare policy briefings for presidents that several agencies sign off on in a highly controlled process. But Mr. Trump has adopted a much more freewheeling approach, taking in unverified information from sources both inside and outside the White House and seeking out and promoting assertions that fit his narrative.

Fiona Hill, the National Security Council’s former senior director for Eurasian and Russian affairs, testified to House investigators last week that she believed Mr. Patel was improperly getting involved in Ukraine policy and was sending information to Mr. Trump, some of the people said.

Ms. Hill grew alarmed earlier this year when an aide from the White House executive secretary’s office told her that Mr. Trump wanted to talk to Mr. Patel and identified him as the National Security Council’s “Ukraine director,” a position held by one of Ms. Hill’s deputies. The aide said Mr. Trump wanted to meet with Mr. Patel about documents he had received on Ukraine.

Ms. Hill responded by asking who Mr. Patel was. While the aide from the executive secretary’s office did not state explicitly that Mr. Patel sent the Ukraine documents to Mr. Trump, Ms. Hill understood that to be the implication, according to a person familiar with her testimony.

Mr. Patel’s apparent communications with the president prompted Ms. Hill to raise concerns with her superiors, including John R. Bolton, then the national security adviser, that Mr. Patel was meddling outside of his portfolio. As early as May, Ms. Hill had begun discussing with colleagues her concerns about whether Mr. Patel was running a shadow effort on Ukraine at the White House, according to four people briefed on the discussions.

Two other witnesses in the impeachment investigation, Mr. Sondland and George P. Kent, another State Department official, testified that they had not encountered him in their work, according to people familiar with the inquiry.

Mr. Patel joined the National Security Council in February and began getting involved in Ukraine matters in April, as Mr. Giuliani pushed the Ukrainian government to discredit evidence against Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump’s former campaign chairman. It was not clear who hired him.

Mr. Patel was previously best known as a lead author of the politically charged memo released early last year accusing the F.B.I. and Justice Department leaders of abusing their power in the early stages of the Russia investigation.

Mr. Patel worked at the time as an investigator for the House Intelligence Committee under Representative Devin Nunes of California, who ran the panel when Republicans had control of the chamber. Mr. Patel’s efforts to discredit the Russia investigation made him a minor celebrity in conservative circles but a divisive figure on Capitol Hill.

As an intelligence committee aide, Mr. Patel helped investigate the theory that Ukrainians were responsible for spreading information about Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mr. Trump has returned to the accusation of Ukrainian meddling repeatedly in public and private conversations.

On the National Security Council, Mr. Patel first worked with officials in a directorate called International Organizations and Alliances that was devoted to advancing American interests at the United Nations and on human rights and other international issues.

Some National Security Council aides questioned whether Mr. Patel’s experience as Mr. Nunes’ investigator was relevant to overseeing American policy toward the United Nations, a person familiar with his hiring said.

Under Mr. Bolton’s watch, Mr. Patel was later given a more senior role in the counterterrorism directorate. That fit more directly with his background as a onetime federal counterterrorism prosecutor, but some officials said Mr. Patel was promoted to a senior director position unusually quickly.

Mr. Patel is closely aligned on the National Security Council staff with another alumna of Mr. Nunes’ committee, Michael Ellis, now a top White House lawyer. Mr. Ellis worked for Mr. Nunes for years as a lawyer on the House Intelligence Committee and helped champion Mr. Patel’s work on the staff, a person familiar with their roles said.

Mr. Ellis was involved in another bizarre episode early in the Trump administration in which he and another White House lawyer printed highly classified reports to show Mr. Nunes, who used them to accuse Obama administration officials of spying on Mr. Trump and his associates. The claims quickly unraveled, and Mr. Nunes eventually recused himself from his committee’s own Russia investigation as a result.

Mr. Patel’s role as an investigator for Mr. Nunes is highlighted in a book by Lee Smith, a conservative journalist, set to be published next week. The book asserts without evidence that the so-called deep state of career government bureaucrats and members of the media embarked on a grand scheme to thwart Mr. Trump from being president.

Mr. Nunes hired Mr. Patel because he “knew the nature of the enemy,” Mr. Smith wrote.

“I hired him to bust down doors,” Mr. Nunes said in the book.

The memo that Mr. Patel wrote as a House Intelligence Committee aide focused on the F.B.I.’s use of a dossier of explosive, unverified claims about Mr. Trump that Christopher Steele, a former British spy, compiled in 2016 for a Democratic-funded research mission. House Republicans long ago seized on the dossier as evidence that the Russia investigation was tainted, to little avail.

As part of their inquiry, House Republicans looked into whether Mr. Steele relied on sources from Ukraine for his research and whether the former American ambassador to Ukraine, Marie L. Yovanovitch, had ties to the research firm that hired Mr. Steele.

Ms. Yovanovitch was a casualty of Mr. Giuliani’s efforts in Ukraine as well; she was recalled from her post in the spring as Mr. Trump became convinced she had disparaged him, a charge she denies. Mr. Nunes, Mr. Patel’s former boss, has long accused her of speaking out against the president.

But Ms. Yovanovitch said that one of her bosses told her she was being ousted even though she had done “nothing wrong,” according to her testimony.
