haikyuu rewatch s01e01

i've been itching to rewatch the series lately and a few years ago i did something similar for miraculous ladybug where i wrote up like a stream of consciousness/commentary post and made a gifset for each episode and i wanna try to do it again for haikyuu?? we'll see if i stay committed or not lol—gifsets per ep probably a lot more likely to continue than commentaries tbh, these things are long and not thought out so,

anyway let's start with episode 1, who wants to take bets on how many times i get teary-eyed?

ughhhhh how did i not know IMMEDIATELY my first time watching what a fucking banger of a show this would be. this opening scene is sooo aah. the voice over with the sounds of the balls and shoes, the actual content of the 'a tall tall wall' monologue, and then the visuals of just hinatas shoes stepping up to the line and then 'it was a view i could never see on my own' and the rest of the teams shoes step in??? FUCK

holyyyyy and bc im obsessed i know who is who based on their shoes in that lineup and after thir 'onigaishimasu' and they run onto the court they all run in at different speeds?? and like tanaka goes quick and kageyama bounces on his toes and tsukki is all like unenthusiastic?? what the fuCK bro

no one cares but my japanese is surprisingly better than when i first watched (at which time i knew nothing) and i can actually understand a few bits here and there without the subs

reading the occasional katakana in the background is fun too. mmmm i should try looking at og scans of the manga to see how the sound effects are intended to be read, ive heard the way furudate incorporates the characters into the action as the sound itself is really well done

also thinking about how this IS basically all hinatas POV (including the quote i just referenced) and what kageyamas POV of hinata is when he looks back on it all 👀

let me tell you i had relatively low expectations for haikyu my very first time. i just wanted something easy to watch while i ate my lunch during the day, and i thought it would just be a predictable underdog story where hinata gets revenge for middle school. and i wasnt against that, i was relatively entertained this whole episode, then it gets to the end and reveals that kageyama has to be his teammate and i was like OH this is gonna be GOOD good. immediately have me hope and reassurance that the show knew what it was doing and wasnt gonna just be typical cliches etc

Top 10 CSatM Episodes (1/2)

Ahhh, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons...! Probably only Second to Thunderbirds when it comes to the most popular and beloved Supermarination programme, with only Stingray able to compete for that coveted Silver Medal. But for me, it’s my Favourite!

I could go on and on about it, but for now I’ll go over my personal picks for a Top 10, which may give some insight into what about the way the series ticks makes it so enthralling.

Without further ado, let’s jump in! I’m not ordering them by preference, but rather the Episode order as I watched them on my DVDs (tediously the ep listings never seem to be consistent :T) Spoilers for all eps covered! ✂

Winged Assassin

Starting off my Favourites is the 2nd episode of the whole show, featuring a good condensed version of the events of Ep 1 if ya missed it and probably the best explanation on the workings of Retrometabolism that canon media is ever gonna grant us. The plot is fairly straightforward, but what elevates this is the aforementioned Exposition, which feels more organic than it did last episode, the interactions between Scarlet and Blue, and even the shocking twist at the ending, where the mission that had been going so well falls at the very last hurdle, in spite of Spectrum’s best efforts.

One of the most chilling visuals in the series is a surfaced shard of a downed passenger plane floating up from the sea, before the camera pans out to show the duplicated plane flying through the air, and another dark shot later on, of Scarlet’s limp hand with blood running down after he died in the effort to prevent the massive explosion that occurs regardless.

Winged Assassin sets a lot of standards of things to follow; traits like massive collateral damage just as part of the Mysteron’s grander scheme, the close partnership of Scarlet and Blue, Scarlet’s seldom used Sixth Sense and even the occasional downer ending, where the Mysterons manage to sneak a victory in and actually kill or destroy their stated target.

White as Snow

This episode shines a very interesting light on the dynamics between Col. White and Scarlet. It’s obviously one of a superior giving orders most of the time, but in a twist from the somewhat strict nature of Jeff Tracy over his sons who show respect to their father by not arguing back, with these two there’s actually the occassional spark of friction, that Scarlet will voice when he doesn’t like the commands and will only reluctantly go through the motions in the situation. I’m referring mostly to the first Mysteron attack, where a satellite is on a collision course with Cloudbase, but Scarlet unsubtly opposes the plan as there’s the possibility of innocent people on board who would get killed if Spectrum shot it down first. However, he’s overruled... and it turns out that it was indeed a trap, the people on board had been exploded hours ago and what was shot down was a Replicant copy. And that’s just the first half of the episode! But I find it interesting that again, back in Thunderbirds, the call to not remotely destroy something like that on the offchance it was populated would be the Correct course of action, but in this show pragmatism is needed, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Anyway, the episode has another Mysteron attack aboard a submarine, with plenty of tension... but yet, there’s something of a comedic bend to the episode, such as a furious White shouting at the currently dead Scarlet, much to the Naval crew’s confusion, and the scene at the end which I’ve taken the picture from. The weakest part of the episode is probably Blue in charge of Cloudbase, as he doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing and I feel they coulda done more with him. Oh well! At least we got the fantastic music insert, which is also titled White as Snow.

Operation Time

Probably ranking in my Top 3, Operation Time is pretty remarkably both one of the most tension filled... yet an extremely funny episode. I guess some of that’s just due to my own odd sense of humour, though some moments are clearly intentional. Both the operation scenes, the Mysteron’s pursuit of the Doctor, and finally Spectrum chasing the Mysteron!Doctor are all played very suspensefully, and I find myself holding my breath. But then the funny scenes, like everything with Magenta and how hilariously pissy and unsubtle the Fake!Doctor gets leave me in stitches! [pun unintended lol]

I dunno, maybe some of the amusement effect is enhanced by the strong contrast between the scenes. Also we get a very grisly death for the Fake!Doctor and this episode establishes weaknesses for the Mysterons that will come up in future instalments. There’s a lot this ep has to offer, even something of an insight into 60′s medicine (though the series is set in 2068). While an extremely minor point, both the scenes with operations have the pssssshh.....fsssssshhhh sound that I associate with ventilators even though they ain’t being used, what’s up with that? But it’s another thing to add to the Atmosphere so s’all good, man.

Odd that I can’t think of much else to put here, I love it so much but maybe it’s so solid in the couple of things it does that’s all there really is to say? I’m feeling frustrated at how I don’t seem to have written enough for it, but trust me when I say it’s excellent and that it’s absolutely a Must Watch if you’re giving the series a look. (Though again, I’m spoiling each ep covered so uhh... read at your own risk if you’re using this to judge it!)

The Heart of New York

An interesting tale that I’ve actually Heard more than I’ve watched, as the audio adaptation is a free sample on the official Gerry Anderson site! [At least at the time of writing lmao, it’s worth a look anyway. This message was not paid for.]

This story is somewhat unique in that the Mysterons’ plan is pretty tame by their standards. They want to blow up... a Bank. Sure, it contributes to the long game they play, causing disruption and destruction, but compared to the casual massive collateral damage they inflict as part of a more focused murder attempt (again, see Winged Assassin and the passenger plane) this is small potatoes. But still, they end up feeling more moral in this episode than the actual ne’er do wells, a trio of would-be Robbers. These guys are pretty assholish, deliberately using the horrible cosmic war that’s already taken lives in the triple digits to hide behind while they take their pickings from a vault. Captain Black locking these morons in with the explosives feels like poetic justice, that they really did get what they wanted and are punished in kind.

Maybe this feeds the Mysteron’s point, that humans are aggressive, corrupt and selfish... though Colonel White challenges this view at the end of the episode, stating the robbers aren’t indicative of humanity as a whole. The whole shebang is a lot like The Twilight Zone, honestly. All we need is Rod Serling to open and close the episode...

Point 783

This episode is a bit harder to go into depth on, to be honest, it’s not one with a particular gimmic that makes it more memorable, but it’s a very solid ep all the same. There’s still a fair few layers that keep me thinking, like how it seems one of the Methane Trunk drivers had seemingly been Mysterionised offscreen to enable the Mysteron’s main pawns to me made. Then the first attempt to kill the Supreme Commander is thwarted by Scarlet’s (somewhat inconsistant) Mysteron Sense and perspex tubes that take their sweet time to descend and don’t even prioritise the actual target lol

Anyway, the meat of the episode is focused on the guest vehicle, the Unitron implacable unmanned Tank that can be controlled remotely by human operator or programmed to destroy something particular, and it will not stop or slow down no matter what’s thrown at it. Something something Proto-Drone Warfare commentary. The Mysterons’ last big attempt to assassinate today’s dude has one of their Mysterionised guys from earlier become the target, unknown to everyone else until he draws his gun inside the SPV (who even points out the 6th sense didn’t activate!). Scarlet gets shot 3 times but manages to eject himself and the Supreme Commander, which leads to the above scene, which offers a nice, human response.

Mr Supreme Commander later chews Blue out as it emerges instead of Scarlet going to a Hospital within 10 minutes, Spectrum insisted on waiting for one of their Helicopters to pick him up, which took 3 hours. Poor Blue has to try reassuring the army guys that Scarlet will be fine, truuuuust hiiiim. It makes me wonder if Spectrum is making things easier or harder overall by keeping his Retrometabolism under their hats, though I can understand they’d have reservations, but just trying to gloss over it with a ‘no no, it’s fine, he’ll get better.’ type answer doesn’t seem all that convincing. But I enjoy that it’s semi challenged here. And this episode summary ended up longer than expected cause all the Thinking I’ve done, haha!

Okayyyy so I was supposed to write an assignment on how a romantic movie expresses love and I asked my prof if I could write about tgwdlm instead and he said yes?? Bless him so anyway I made wayyyy too many notes for a 500-600 word assignment lmao so I felt like i might as well post em here… this is a compilation of every time Paul and Emma interact pretty much lol its hella long (im not kidding it’s like 7 pages rip) so under the cut :)

Coffee Shop Part 1

Tips well to impress her

Listens to her vent-she already feels comfy enough to rant to him or, alternatively, she’s just a really open person (but shhh she has to trust him to some extent)

Insults others he doesnt know too well but he knows she doesnt like, again to impress

Tries to act indifferent towards everyone else (and tough)

Almost says smth romantic (“Some things are worth it”) but backtracks when she looks confused

In this scene, he tries to act cool but is clearly super nervous. One thing I really like is how he never acts too cool for her, like a lotta people do. He’s genuinely interested in what she has to say and never pretends otherwise, and also never pretends to be interested to get her to like him. I just really love how good he is at listening

Cup of Roasted Coffee/ Cup of Poisoned Coffee

When he panics he goes to Beanies to get a coffee and relax (wake up)

He turns to Emma (subconsciously?) for comfort

This scene is reeeally creepy from Emma’s perspective like oh my gosh can you imagine a man yelling at you (not at you but at your singing but still) and pulling you away from your work and then holding you still when you try to leave??? Anxiety to the max poor babe but also i get paul’s side can you imagine seeing the whole apocalypse beginning and it’s so weird no one would believe you if you tried to tell them? Poor bb. There’s also a lot of things that come up later: the ways he holds emma in this scene is the same way he holds her later one, later it’s to comfort her but  this time it’s more to calm himself… he also pulls her to a better spot like he does later on

Trash Bin Scene

He leads her away-he knows the neighbourhood better

Tries learning about her (you like film?) (cmon paul bad timing)

I dont know why i find this so cute but their convos are so perfect like he asks qs so he knows exactly what she’s talking about (“what’s a coatimundi?” “Oh, did she smoke a lot of pot?”) and he repeats back phrases she says which shows that he’s genuinely listening like...so many characters (and people irl, lets be real)  just pretend to listen to get what they want but he cares so much about what she has to say i just cant stop talking about it it’s so cute also how he seems so comfortable when she’s talking and then starts showing sign of nervousness again when the convo turns to him? Instinctively reaches for Paul  when Char gets shot (and later looks back at paul a couple of times when shook at prof hidgens)

Alright they do this whenever aliens show up so imma just talk about it here: this part was in my assignment so 1 lets hope it doesnt get flagged as plagiarism and 2 i could rant about this all day.

Basically Paul fulfills the traditional masculine role as protector and leader. Whenever smth dangerous shows up, he has one hand on her (on her shoulder, arm or the small of her back)-both reassuring them that someone else is there and making it easier for him to move her-which he does lots. He pulls her behind him or pushes her forward (away from the infected), leading her to where he thinks is safest. He always puts himself between her and the aliens, leading her to a safer spot. Emma tends to get distracted (emotional female stereotype) and paul is the one to move them both to safety (strong stoic man stereotype). To be fair, he is a lot bigger than emma and would probs have an easier time in a fight (tho i dont doubt that emma would be v i c i o u s) Emma tend to cling to Paul’s arm when she gets scared (which is really cute)

Hidgens’ Fortress Part 2

Emma adds to Paul’s plan- taps on his arm to move him

Paul steps back in front of her- i always found this weird, he totally blocks her from the conversation like why

She steps back out to roast ted

Paul looks at Emma when Ted @s him-now here’s where I could see him standing up for Bill to impress emma again. It’s not the only reason, but i do think it’s a contributing factor (and probably was before too cuz lets be real, when your crush is around you gotta act tough) of course he wants to protect his bff but he’s super anxious around ted so wanting to look brave for emma gives him that extra push he needs. Alternatively, he looks at Emma as a way to calm himself down before saying smth scary (which is adorable)

Emma wants to help but is called back to help with the lab

This is another thing i find super interesting-wouldnt more people around make it more likely he gets stopped? Did he want an audience (more than just ted) cuz i guess that’s understandable but in that case why didnt he wait a little longer to see if they came back? Idk it just seemed weird to me (also the whole “nooo female cant go out where it’s dangerous” even though it’s more like “oh emma’s the only one i know here can she not leave” wait actually that’s probably it lmao he just didnt wanna be alone with ted ok relatable nvm )

“Hey, Paul?” grabs arms (paul reciprocates) she’s real nervous for him leaving-relates to how much he hates musicals

I find that really cute cuz it’s showing once again how much they listen to each other and idk i just really like that about them

Grabs his face and pulls him close-he pulls her hands down to look her in the eyes to tell her he’ll stay safe

He doesn’t kiss her-super interesting! She pulled him close like that (which coulda been a sign to kiss her) and this was a pretty emotionally charged moment which a kiss would have fit - Paul hates kisses hc?

Not Your Seed + General (technically, just a little note)

Paul holds Emma tight with 2 hands, but keeps 1 hand free when holding others (ie bill and charlotte)

Only tells General about Emma, not Ted or the Prof (tho to be fair, he hates ted and barely knows the prof but it’s interesting how he doesnt even say he has “friends”, just Emma)

She pulls him away from the General-paul usually does the pulling to safety

Paul doesnt notice when Emma is grabbed by Ted (lmao i get that he’s a little busy but it still seems odd)

She struggles with 1, 3 are on Paul (not a sexist thing, she’s tiny and also Paul is the main character and the aliens know it plus they gotta do that cool lift thing)

Emma grabs gun + shoots the General, grabbing Paul-”Paul! The helicopter! Cmon!”

Usually Paul does that stuff, but emma takes the protective role more in the 2nd half of this song

Basically we have the classic paul protecting emma stuff but now also the emma protecting paul which is good and fresh and i love...the way she tries to protect paul is different than how he protects her. She yells more frantically, and also is more of trying to lead him whereas paul yells to get her attention and physically moves her himself

Helicopter Scene

He helps her onto the heli, back to his usual protective self

Keeps one hand on the back of her seat the whole time (aww he’s stabilizing himself physically cuz the copter’s shaky and emotionally cuz he’s closer to Emma)

“Emma, seatbelts” he reaches up to help her into her seat-he kicks the gun to save them

“Emma? Emma?” immediate response is to call out to her-that boy was literally awake less than a second before worrying about her i love him

Runs to her when he sees her

“”This is what seatbelts are for” in this scene he seems really like...over it? Idk if anyone else got that he just seemed really intent on destroying the meteor instead of anything to do with Emma… before saving their lives was priority but also spending time with her, here he nods like he’s trying to rush her and does not seem excited to kiss her (again, Paul hates kisses? ok that was a rant that got ahead of my notes but just-) this scene is weird to me like maybe he’s trying to rush to stop the meteor so they can be together after and like not die idk anymore

He reaches out for her, jumping away when she cries out in pain

The rest of the scene he has his hands hovering a few inches away from her, very protective but also very scared of hurting her

Emma comes up with the solution, Paul has to do it cuz she’s hurt (weak gal, strong man, injured person knows secret to survival and tells strong boi how to do it tropes)

“Hey, Paul?” slides over to him-he gingerly supports her back (scared to hurt her)

He shushes her to calm her while talking cuz she’s in pain- ok, maybe its less about “gotta get out of here” and more about “she’s hurt really badly and needs help asap, i gotta destroy that meteor so i can get help” ok that makes sense im dumb lmao

Emma is first to ask out + kiss me? + pulling him in by his tie- breakin stereotype of man making first move

Then the little “..okay..” after she asks him to kiss her...maybe he wanted it to be romantic aww he wanted them to have a real cute first kiss and this wasnt what he had planned (or he just doesn’t like kisses cuz like he looks so uncomfortable there’s gotta be a reason”

He doesnt wanna kiss her cuz of the blood (weak) and is happy to leave-this part is what throws me off most he just like runs on outta there with no hesitation but he loves her?? I dont get it

Dont really need a rant here cuz i did a lotta ranting in the points… excuse my little journey of discovery there lmao I was just confused at first cuz at face value he seems really different, super hell bent on getting out of there whereas in every other scene he pays way more attention to Emma. I suppose it’s because he knows he has to destroy the meteor asap so he can get her help, i just didnt catch that. His motivations seemed very different in this scene to me and i couldnt figure out why

Theory time

Now here’s the fun part-i saw a theory somewhere that Paul can only get infected because he has a true goal now, he really wants to end up with Emma. In What Do You Want, Paul? Mr. Davidson is trying to find out what he wants to use it as motivation to make him more susceptible to the virus/make him sing a song, but since Paul doesn’t want anything clearcut he cant be infected. Now, since Paul wants Emma, he has a goal and smth to fight for but also smth to sing about. The very reason he’ trying to save the world becomes the reason he fails.

HOWEVER. His goal could just as easily be saving the world cuz he literally doesnt bring emma up once? Like i get he’s preoccupied but idk if he’s about to die i feel like he’d at least mention her (unless he’s hoping they think she died and wont go looking for her if he fails) idk their romance is adorable until the scene before this and then these 2 scenes make it feel really off for me

Okay now onto the most fun scene >:) -since there’s so many details i separated them into actions and lyrics

Inevitable (Actions)

“Are you sure there weren’t any other survivors?” :(

“PEIP would like to see it become smth more” because she’s the love interest and they’re supposed to end up together ahhh it’s the alien talking

She grabs his arms to look him in the eyes then pulls him in for a hug (the cutest)

She’s v reluctant to believe it at first “Paul?” She’s still smiling for the first line

Slowly she starts to let herself see what’s happening “Paul, you’re scaring me”

She knows he’s infected but she’s trying her hardest to believe he could be playing a cruel joke

He has power over her physically- holds her where he wants her while they’re dancing

He dances with her at first, gestures to her to move closer, talks to her, moves towards dancing at her instead of with

He blocks her exit, pulls her to where he wants her and ignores her for part

This is where you can really tell he’s different. Paul would never ignore Emma, and he straight up ignores her to sing and dance

He points at her and then goes back to ignoring her

Emma starts sobbing and really trying to run

Emma is dragged to the center of the stage sobbing because she cant do anything

He drops character in credits, waving and smiling to the audience; she doesnt

He’s got physical power over her (strength) but also cuz he’s backed by all the aliens who can move her where she’s supposed to go

Inevitable (lyrics)

“Emma, I’m sorry, you lost.” couldnt kill aliens

“Lost your way” didnt want to join them

“I made it” ‘This is the life that I chose” “I’m still the man you trust” “what if the only choice is you had to sing to survive” “Put words to the lyrics and you’re playing the game now” -maybe he’s faking it (i also heard someone mention the fact that he sings in his natural voice and not the higher one he used for the Alien Brain in Let It Out which is a good catch) (also someone else brought up the fact that he was mostly singing reprises, maybe because he couldnt think up his own tune/entirely original lyrics?)

“It’s inevitable for us”-because she’s the love interest, it’s was inevitable that they’d wind up together

“Show me those jazz hands” He’s trying to convince her to join of her own free will

“or i might be inclined to plant my seed” but is willing to do it by force if she wont

This song is super interesting because of the parallels-he holds her the same way he did in previous songs, pulls and pushes her across the stage like before, but this time it’s turned against her. What was once meant as protection is now being used to force her to join the dance I talked more about this in my assignment but i dont wanna get too close to what i wrote before because it could get flagged for plagiarism and i do not want that so imma reblog this post alter and add my assignment for more info (if yall want anyway)

The lyrics could hint at Paul faking it, and it definitely appears that way (especially with the face he makes at “Im still the man you trust) but i think the part in the middle where he just kind of breaks off to dance really kills that idea for me. Even if he was trying to trick the aliens, he could have kept closer to Emma like he does every other time they’re in danger, and the fact that he straight up ignores her and lets the aliens move her around like that is just not in his character so apologies but i believe our man is gone

Also, regarding the theories that Emma is infected because of the beginning; I could see that happening, but in that case, why didnt she break character at the end? I have absolutely zero idea how/if the intro song fits into the story but idk i feel like she should’ve acted like the rest of them if she really was infected but on the other hand i really like the heartbreaking theory that they’re all infected and Paul just has to keep reliving the story of how he failed again and again for all eternity like ouch? But also? Its great in a painful way??

.............i’m goin’ in deep y’all sry not sry (ok i AM kinda sry to those on mobile who have to scroll past this....... i wish mobile didn’t suck like that so you can avoid watching me be a huge dweeb instead of pro’lly what you decided to follow me for hnnnnggh)

these are 2 separate moments I came up with that I eventually tied together after some editing (/fantasizing about my own ideas) passes:

at a gathering with their friends, they both got insufferably cocky about a game involving pairs against pairs, and the stakes kept rising, eventually hinging on some pretty risky bets. when they lost, they were mortified in having to eat the brightly colored crow their friends (conspirators, the useless lot of them!) came up with. they had to temporarily dye their hair the other’s hair color, and couldn’t wash it out for a whole week (or use a genjutsu?). so sakura had to work around the hospital with blonde hair, and pink-haired naruto was at the mercy of his sharp-tongued genin students. people wonder if sakura meant to and if she wants to look more like her shishou, which is cool and all, but most everyone says they like her pink hair better, which is a relief. The most annoying part is the humiliation she feels since she had to do it as the result of her own hubris. he complains about the relentless teasing savagery of his genin students while they’re walking along the canal on their last evening of this punishment, but admits to sakura he doesn’t mind the hair so much and shares he’s often wondered what it’d be like to have his mother’s hair, and pink is similarly distinctive and beautiful and in the same color family. It’s the first comparison of one of her features to his mother’s he speaks aloud, and his heart starts racing because he momentarily forgets she doesn’t know about his mother’s words to find a girl like her. Completely unaware of his thoughts and sudden nervousness, she serenely replies, “I’m sorry she’s not here to experience how sweet her son can be to her… I wonder if she would have liked me? I think I’d have liked her” she actually doesn’t take his silence personally, sort of because she doesn’t think what she said requires a response, but mostly because she’s distracted. they get around some trees at the edge of the pathway right at that moment, allowing a beautiful view of the brilliantly warm-toned sunset. she makes a noise of appreciation and with a childlike wonder he hasn’t seen on her in a little while, she cheerily says, “this sunset has all our colors, Naruto!” “Yeah” he says, a little breathless. “All our colors.” He watches her until she notices (trrrooopey as fuuuuuuck, i know, shut up) and smiles real big at him but humorously admonishes, “Don’t look at me, weirdo! You see me all the time, but you don’t see the same sunset twice” then she faces it again. So he puts his hands in his pockets to stop their quivering as the scene soaks in and suddenly it’s just really hard to see her green eyes with his blonde hair. he turns to take in the sunset too, and he thinks, “she would have loved you, Sakura… we can bet on it” (originally all i’d written here was the first paragraph, and then I think my subconscious LEAPT OUT AT ME the next time I read it to provide this sunset scene -- they’re my rainbow sherbet fighting dreamers ninja family!!!)

In my headcanon world, Naruto and Sakura have five kids, two of which are adopted and three conceived. * I want to note here that I almost never go the “lots and lots of babies” route w/ my otp’s. 3 out of my top 5 do not go on to have kids in my interpretations of them. But for Naruto and Sakura it makes sense, and this is especially based in my conviction he would want to adopt and he would want a big family to experience the exact opposite of his childhood. So, yeah, 5 makes a lot of sense to me. I tend to think they are resistant to the idea of kids for a while bc of the threats to their lives, but they eventually decide they both really want to have kids after fostering two boys and it’s so hard to eventually let them go on to their adoptive parents. Sooo.. their youngest are twins; they’re named Konohana and Sakuya. And my reasoning for this, as well as for all the other names, is pretty in depth. Here: I first heard about Konohana from @yellowflasher‘s great fanfics. She has a Konohana and Kae (not twins), and I asked her once if she named Konohana after the myth, and she said she actually hadn’t seen or heard it before. It obviously stuck with me tho!! Uzumaki Konohana = from the Konohanasakuya-hime mythology. I just discovered with this name theme of using myths I coulda inadvertently referenced Kushina and Minato as well!! -- Kushina’s name could have been derived from Kushinadahime, a goddess of rice/life, and Susanoo is her husband, the god of STORMS aka Namikaze Minato. (Maybe other peeps in the fandom already knew this but I’m late to the party. Oh well! I was shocked when I learned this yesterday.) And it honors Konohagakure, and honors Sakura: ‘flower’ is part of the name. Konohana was conceived (twin to Sakuya)

Uzumaki Sakuya = from the Konohanasakuya-hime mythology. And see above for the comments about the possible Kushina/Minato connection. And it honors Sakura: it’s literally 2/3rds her name; one different ending syllable. & naruto calls her Momo-chan, and I explain why below.

After deciding all this, I came up with this moment: Naruto and Sakura love the names from the princess myth but also love they are referring to Konoha and Sakura. tho, because Sakuya can sometimes sound too similar to Sakura, confusingly so-- and as Naruto’s the only one who has to say both names in the household (y’know, because it’s either “Sakuya” or “mom” said by everyone else, the kids don’t call her Sakura) -- he often calls her “Momo-chan.” as a kid she’s not sure why but just rolls with it and then one day in her later childhood it dawns on her: orange + pink = peach (note: momo means the fruit and momo-iro means the color but I think naruto would just keep it short and simple as momo-- he’d probably argue an orange plus a cherry equals a peach anyway, somehow……... hahhh! I actually looked it up and peaches are in the same genus as cherries and apricots, and apricots are orange :P not that naruto would know this but sakura would be like me and probs research it lol). Sakura expresses concern that Konohana will feel jealous or excluded if he doesn’t give her a nickname too, and he forlornly / guiltily (at having not even thought of that) approaches Konohana with this. She’s rather young to be considering this so thoughtfully -- maybe 4 or 5 -- but her answer never changes as she grows up (though the vocabulary / phrasing she uses might mature…. But I say might, haha); “don’t change me; I love my name!! it is like our home so it means I will become hokage like daddy!! and it is like flowers like mommy’s flower so it means people are happy and have a party when i show up!!” (she’s talking about hanami) naruto immediately bursts into tears bc holy shit he just loves this kid so!! much!!! ( ᵒ̴̶̷̥́ _ᵒ̴̶̷̣̥̀ ) sakura’s doing better at keeping it together, tho not by much, lmao

Some months into the nickname of Momo-chan settling in, there’s a morning where it’s brought into question again. while sakura and naruto are folding laundry, the twins rush in from the backyard to show them something they’re excited about in their grubby cupped hands. “Look! loo~oook! polli-wolly-wogs!!” (tadpoles-- i have great affection for this term for them bc mei in the english dub of totoro calls them that, and totoro is a defining touchstone of my young childhood) naruto intones, “eeehhhh? How cool, konohana-chan!! Momo-chan! Maybe uncle Gamakichi knows ‘em, huh?” and they laugh and stick their tongues out at him, “he’s not our uncle! He’s a toad!” yet they’re making ribbiting sounds as they run off to return the tadpoles. Sakuya trips and just narrowly regains her footing at the last moment to prevent toppling herself and the tadpoles across the floor. “careful, momo-chan!” Naruto offers in a loud voice, but calmly-- he holds back his concern, as he’s learned that a lot of the time kids decide whether they should cry based on their parents’ reactions, namely whether they freak out a lot, and he’s done a lot of freaking out, and is trying something new now, pfft. He watches her right herself, check on the tadpoles in her hands, nod once firmly and give a determined “mm!” in acknowledgement of his caution, and they scamper off. 

So then Sakura asks, with some humor in her voice even tho she’s going for annoyed: “naruto, why’d we even name her sakuya if you’re just gonna keep calling her momo-chan?” “aahh, sakura-chan. She’s just little momo to her daddy. Out in the real world she’ll be called the name inspired by her mind-blowing mom.” the tinge of pink on her cheeks does not get past him and the side of his mouth starts to twitch into a smirk. He roguishly continues with, “I thought about making you the one I address with a nickname instead, but all the ones I could come up with aren’t appropriate in front of the kids” she tries to look aghast but she’s fighting her mutinous mouth starting to veer into a big smile, and to distract his gaze away from this very visible and losing battle across her face, she twists a towel and snaps it at him. They play fight until they fall onto the bed, halfway into the now half-undone laundry. They rest a little bit, soaking in the calm moment, his upper body on top of her lower body-- resting his head on her stomach and holding her around her waist. Her eyes are closed and she’s absent-mindedly running her fingers through his hair. Then he softly voices, “little peach... she’s our colors, Sakura.” and she does vividly remember the sunset he’s recalling. She answers with his words from years ago: “Yeah. our colors.”

I'm so glad they killed off Adam so he wouldn't have to be further exposed to Miles and Kerry's terrible writing choices. He's best handled by Monty, who wanted to make him a Fallen Mentor figure. But, we got obsessed and abusive ex-boyfriend, even though the information we got for the past seasons (BLack Trailer - Volume 2) told us otherwise.

oh boy do i have some thoughts About Adam

but first let me get it out of the way that i have seen all the dramatic gifs of blake and yang teaming up to take him down, like second by second every word played over and over for The Gays

like i’m happy you got your gays rwby fandom but like, blake whapped him once at the end of season 5 and he went down like a rock so was this really necessary lmao... coulda just thrown a rock at him his vision was shit BEFORE he restricted his visibility with that mask-

Anyway, Adam. Can I start by saying that it’s wild the way Faunus discrimination is treated in RWBY? Between the most open displays of hostility basically being “schoolyard bullying” to the majority of Faunus either being villains or complacent NPCs, this whole Faunus oppression angle was handled atrociously from the get-go. 

Our two main Faunus characters are the ever-passive Blake, who is completely reactive when it comes to the Faunus’ plight and only ever moves in response to something Adam or the White Fang does, and Sun, who has never experienced actual on-screen Faunus prejudice outside of Weiss’ anti-Faunus sentiments that lasted a hot ten seconds before being swept under the rug forever in vol 1. 

So we kick off RWBY with the worst racism in the series being mean comments, 98% of Faunus being villains and Blake just saying “things need to be better... but not like this...” aaaand not actually doing anything at all. Blake and Sun offer very little insight into Faunus oppression - hell, Blake is pseudo nobility from Menagerie, which is pretty well separated from whatever hardships mainland Faunus have to endure, so what does she know? (I’m really ???? about whether or not Menagerie was planned, bc while this image is cute it doesn’t mesh well with Blake being from Menagerie.) 

So our best window into actual Faunus oppression by default becomes Adam. Adam’s a pretty young man that’s turned to extremism as the only way to get results - and according to Blake, it was working - and at some point got branded by the SDC company over his damn eye. Given the rest of the White Fang are NPCs the only way to actually get details on how shit Faunus have it is from Adam, who hypothetically could’ve been a mainland Faunus.

Instead we get the abusive ex-boyfriend plot - so at this point we’re not even trying to make the face of the Faunus Rebellion sympathetic. The White Fang are just all evil, with no shades of gray? Adam is an incompetent and laughably one-dimensional character that by all rights probably should’ve been a tragically sympathetic figure gone off the deep end chasing damaging extremist ideals while Blake’s more moderate approach won the day.

Instead we get Blake running from him while he cackles in the background and she’s just... not being proactive at all? Literally the only reason she managed to unite the Faunus of Menagerie at all is by pointing out how fucked up Adam was being, and then immediately ditched them instead of following up on any kind of positive revolution. 

except what is even the point of having this poor oppressed faunus narrative when the faunus we do know are either cardboard cutouts or... have to deal with some heckling but overall seem to be fine? menagerie did not seem that bad, and sun gives no indication that vacuo isn’t okay for faunus and the three main faunus characters care more about the abusive ex subplot than the faunus themselves so... why are we even bothering with any of this?

so far as i can tell the only thing this entire white fang subplot has done except waste time is cause a shitton of damage in vol 3, forcing the plot to progress past “anime school”. that’s it. much wow. 

Honestly I feel if Adam wasn’t screeching ‘mY LoVe’ every ten seconds and blake wasn’t always running away we could’ve actually made this entire thing sort of interesting? like a clash of ideologies? instead of... that...?

incidentally i would’ve liked to see the events leading up to adam getting that brand a lot more than weiss and blake squabbling about off-screen events for two episodes and then forgiving each other and never talking about it again. feel like that would’ve been more interesting. just a tad.

Regan - Kage!!! I love you so much. you're an amazing person and you're iconic. but you had to go. I was in an alliance in the beginning with Karen, Drew, Logan, and Andie. Drew's sole mission was to get you out. And so we followed that and the alliance of us got you out. So sorry. You had to go to please Drew. 

Regan - I wish I got to know you better. You seemed nice and very new to the community. Wish you first real game could've been longer. (at least I think it was your first). Maybe we can talk after the game. But you were had to go next sorry

Regan - Bun- Sort of the same thing I said to aqua. I never met you before. never. I don't think I talked to you once during this game. I wish I had. You were probably a nice person. but like aqua, you were just a casuality in our alliance. 

Andrew - Rip I wish we coulda had more time together but you got super engrossed in your Legend of Zelda game asdfghj. I know you weren’t super into games though when you were eliminated so I hope we get to play together again soon when your head’s back in the game!

Andrew - Whew your boot was a wild one and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I know you’re a sweetheart though and I wish you stayed a bit longer so we really could have talked more and solidified not only a game relationship, but a personal one as well.

Regan - I don't really remember how you left. But I do remember that you saved me. You literally saved my entire alliance. Because Andie sent you nudes. You are weak honey <3. That's why you turned. You set my game up to be as great as it was. From the point on where you flipped, I took my game into my own hands, and I thank you because now I'm in the final 3. and I have a 1/3 chance of winning. 

Veronica -  games always do us dirty when we are in it together tbh I’m happy it did u dirty and not me (at least at this point in time) but ur pretty and beautiful and stay that way 

Andrew - Your boot was even more crazy than Shea’s and honestly I was just as blindsided as you. I was expecting that if I had survived early merge, that we would have been going deep together. But my entire game got flipped upside down by your elimination, and it was really a turning point for me. I wish it hadn’t happened, but know that it changed the whole course of my actions.

Regan - I know you're mad at me right now because of your game. But listen I was blindsided by your vote. I had no clue what happened. I had no idea about the split vote. I didn't plan that, because Andrew and Karen always had their own plans. But I voted with you that time, I never wanted you to go. You were a vital ally to me, at least I believed that. 

Veronica - we really didn’t talk that much but we were in an alliance together idr the name of it at all and it had a couple of others in there as well and i was one of the two people that didn’t actually know or had plans to do u dirty and vote you out from our alliance so when you left i was actually shook 

Andrew - AAAAHHH NNNNN AAAAHHH okay I need to compose myself. Getting to know you even though we didn’t talk a ton was great. We’d talk a lot in the tribe chat and tbh you seemed like an awesome person who I found really easy to interact with. So when the S*pphire Idol vote happened I just- god. I am so sorry that you were the victim of that. In terms of this I say that everything happens for a reason, and I managed to get to the final 3! Idk if that woulda happened either way, but you really didn’t deserve that and I’ve waited like 3 weeks to say that. I hope you aren’t too upset at me over it and that we can remain friends when this is all over.

Regan - I thought I was at the bottom, but then your vote happened. this vote turned my entire game upside down. Yes this was Andrew's sole move, it was the move that sent you packing and turned the game around for my alliance. Yet, after that I knew my game was mine. I knew that because I had the numbers I could control my own destiny. No one saw me as a threat so once you got out and I knew I had the numbers, I could control my game. 

Veronica - ily but we never really talked in the game but u were one of the people that i wanted to wait until the last possible moment to even suggest as a vote and you were done SO dirty like i was literally the :o emoji when i saw you were voted out but you’re so amazing and i hope if we do play a game together again that we work more closely next time

Andrew - Another person I got to talk to a bit more through this game! I mean, we were never really together, but things were always chill with you and you were one of the people that really made this merge cast just seem like a personally calm one (even though everyone was constantly strategically freaking out oops). You’re vote out was yet another wild one but I’m glad you fought in this game as hard as you did.

Regan - You were just a casuality to get Daisy out. You didn't deserve it, but we also knew they'd least expect you to go home. Once we figured out that we made a mistake in creating the alliance we creasted we also realized that you daisy and logan were working together- along with drew and luke. And that we had to do something about it. So we voted you out.

Veronica - ok so like you are one of the nicest people ever and you’re literally so good at games and i wanna host u so bad and like you already know i think all this because I’ve told you but its true and i was sad to vote you out but at the time i needed to for the better of my game and ya don’t hate me pls

Andrew - Drewbert. Whew. Idk what to even say. We’ve played so many games together, and it’s never a case of us being super against each other or super with each other. I see that as super similar in us because we’re adaptable people in my eyes. One second we’ll be against each other, but then we’ll end up close allies. Another game we’ll start out together, and the come for one another. But it’s always in the spirit of the game and never malicious and I’ve always high-key appreciated that. I’m sorry your boot happened the way it did, but it just looked like one of those times where it inevitably flipped to us being on opposing sides. You’re always a fighter though and that’s something I always love to see in you, and I think/am hoping you’re able to say the same thing for me.

Regan - Oh poor Drew. You have won so many games I cannot even count. You were going to win had you made it any further. What you don't realize is how important your vote out was to securing my spot in the final 3- maybe even the final 2. that move started the alliance of me, Daisy, and Veronica. And from there we controlled the game.  Once we got Luke and Daisy to turn on you, my final 3 with Daisy and Veronica was set in stone. I realized at your vote that I needed to continue to play under the radar so  I could slowly but surely pick off the others not in our 3, one by one. 

Veronica - this still applies so I’m just gonna copy and paste what i said to u in mystic lmao

Andrew - KARN my dad what did they do to you : ( NNNN you were one of the bigger players in this game and I feel like we both totally saw our dynamic duo-ship being broken eventually, but when it happened your Sondrew was sad. I am glad we got to finally work together through an entire Survivor game until one of our eliminations at the hands of someone else though. And that’s literally after a year like?? I’m shook. And we actually worked well together which was EVEN MORE SHOOKENING. We were really doing that huh?

Regan - You got out because of me. Let me make this clear- You. go. out. because. of. me. Hate it or love it. this was my move to make. Daisy and I were willing to go to rocks to get you out. We were gonna vote veronica to save her ass in the tie.  Then just hope you got rocked out. I spent this entire round convincing Veronica and telling Veronica why you needed to go. I got Veronica to flip, and that was 10 minutes before tribal. I had to convince her that daisy trusted her, because she was on edge thinking that Daisy didn't despite our deal. I had to get you out because you were the biggest threat to my game. I had a final 3 with you and Andrew. But that does not mean I was going to stay loyal. I was until I realized how many votes you were getting in the end- people loved you and you seemed to be leading our alliance thus why I had to cut you. 

Veronica - karen i actually love u sm ur iconic and a queen and honestly would have won this if i hadn’t done u dirty and voting you out was one of the hardest things i had to do bc like u already know I’m 100% lesbian for you and i promise u that if we are in a game together again i will actually die for u 1000% pls marry me i left jev for u ily

Andrew - God your vote out was a super emotionally charged one. You fought for your damn life and it had me shaking in my boots. Even when I was YELLIN that I had to go host a live tribal for Solomon you wouldn’t give up. For the time we did work together though, it was pretty great. This merge was such a wild one that I didn’t know if we would be able to get to the end together or not, and I’m sorry that we didn’t. You were a big player though, and sometimes big moves gotta me made.

Regan - you did not deserve to go. And you fought so much until the very end. The thing was no matter what you said or did, you were going right after Karen. Daisy liked you, I liked you but you were a huge challenge threat, while I'm not sure if you would have won the jury over, we needed to get you out before you ruined our chances of going to the final 3. As soon as you lost a challenge your game was over. if you won this, Andrew would be sitting on the jury and not you. 

Veronica - luke ily as a person but i DID NOT trust u in this game and RIGHTFULLY so…u tried to get me out >.> ya freak and like i remember we were on call once being like “why don’t we work together in the games we are in together?” and like we should have but i don’t think it was ever meant to be…maybe one day………..

Andrew - Ooooooooh my god this was also one super upsetting vote out. And ya wanna know why? Because I haven’t made a good friend like this from just one game in a while. A lot of the time it’ll take a couple games for me to become acquainted and then really get to know someone. And I feel like now that I’ve been in this community consistently playing games for a year and a half now, it’s harder for me to do that. But we hit it off really quick! And I thought you were an awesome person! So honestly it was awesome getting to know you, and I will forever feel shitty about your vote out. But you fought like many of the other people I’m addressing in these speeches, and I’m glad you did. I hope we get to keep talking after this game, and I really hope our friendship gets to continue afterwards.

Regan - I cried over your vote. You didn't deserve getting voted out. But I knew last night, I was the one making the decision whether the vote tied 2-2 between you and Veronica, or if you left. I was loyal to Veronica for so long and I couldn't just abandon her. You were so easily beat me, and I know you pleaded to me that you wouldn't, but I saw it as you played a good game. You got your way back up after being at the bottom multiple times. You fought your way until the very end. You asked for an extension on the vote because you wanted to give me your plea one last time. truth is, I would've lost a vote if I made it tie and possibly made veronica go packing. It also just wasn't good for my game. I couldn't risk losing to you. I'd rather go out at final 3, knowing I'd win if I made it, then lose in a final 2.

Veronica - ok whew from all the people i think i did you the most dirty in a way just because i knew it was gonna be either me and you when one of us had to be voted out and you were a threat im my opinion so i had to get you out and remind regan that it was smarter to get you out over me and not let it go to rocks but i love u and you were a great ally in this game and ya if we ever play in a game together again i know ur a loyal trustworthy person and ur just so great and ur snap stories are always so lit bc you be serving up some looks
