so wait
the green energy parts of the Inflation Reduction Act have brought tons of jobs and money to mostly Republican districts?
and as a result, Republicans will pressure Trump not to gut those aspects of the law?
I am. cackling.
(I mean the man's a loose cannon, so god knows if he'll actually listen. but climate is my biggest worry with this administration, so this gives me a sliver of hope)
(that and him having made Mr. Electric Car Magnate his crony, so he's had to walk back negative statements about those, too)
#us politics#current events#shocker: green energy projects actually make economic sense too!#people want them and they bring jobs to places that coal and oil never could!#because you don't have to have fossil fuels present in the ground to make EVs or solar panels#or put up wind turbines#or whatever#WHO would have GUESSED?!?!?!

such a polite looking man i hope nothing happens to him
#the master and margarita#m&m#side note i feel silly having to call him master cause he purposely doesnt have a name but here we are#nerd voice TECHNICALLY in the 1972 italian-jugoslavian movie he's called nikolai maxudov in ref to the protag of the theatrical novel#who's called sergei maxudov. idk where the nikolai comes from. could be from one of the turbins in white guard or in ref to gogol#who inspired the figure of the master and his final physical description

High-echelon Mawkin suit modules can be pretty wild, and the Energy conversion module in Raven Beak's suit is no exception.
When exposed to an active current or energy field, the module accounts for the level of charged particles in the local atmosphere and converts the detected matter to power. Most substantial forms of power and radiation are compatible with its function, and it's calibrated to work more efficiently when exposed to substantially powerful forms of plasmic matter.
The conversion module is similar to (but should not be confused with) the thermal charge module, which charges the power suit in extreme heat. That technology is also implemented in the protective exosuits found in Cataris' lava zone. The Mawkin use thermal energy to power a number of their facilities: that they'd implement it in their more mobile works is only natural.
Back to the subject at hand, the conversion module's practicality is twofold: to keep Raven Beak's suit sufficiently charged and to maintain his vigor in battle. His particular biometric modifications are such that his suit, combined with his level of physical fitness, can theoretically keep him fighting without fear of exhaustion in perpetuity.
Raven Beak's juiced up version of lightning armor is the inverse of this module: it absorbs charged particles for the purpose of coalescing into a projected wave. The use of lightning armor in this manner negates the function of the conversion module for restorative purposes. Additionally, lightning armor works best against oncoming projectiles, while the reactive conversion module is at its peak when the suit is exposed to ambient radiation or concentrated, consistent flows of power.
Suffice to say, Raven Beak is probably the only person who could stick a fork in an electrical socket and have it do the exact opposite of killing him.
#when i said he looks down on samus' suit upgrade library with pity. this is the kinda shit he's got under his belt to compare.#headcanons#mawkin#chozo#txt#there's a reason the Mawkin make duelists strip down to the bare essentials when they fight over disputes like leadership#in the case of duels over the title of Warlord that reason is 'to ensure the sitting Lord has not grown soft with the wealth of amenities#at their disposal'#the conversion module is one of those things that's hard-wired into his..#what's the word. cybernetics? Raven Beak has body mods but none of them are cosmetic. they're all for function.#but in any case it shouldn't come into play if he's duking it out with another Chozo in a spear fight.#his rivals for the seat don't have to deal with the immortal god-king who operates at peak efficiency 24/7: just Great Uncle Ashkar#and his fists#those are arguably scarier than the big cannon with its reactor turbines#you could charge this man like a phone#the mawkin were very invested in increasing their warriors' effectiveness in combat. and the suit is for more than just fighting#so a broad-spectrum high power module like that is highly valuable.#electricity. space radiation. charged miasma. you name it: he can probably 'plug in' to it.#he's not invincible and he can't exactly charge his suit in the heat of battle unless he's fighting in a location with great exposure#to charged matter or radiation. just don't fight him in a fallout zone and you're gucci.#i just had the image of him booking it for a nearby power plant to juice up in the middle of a fight snd it made me laugh#grampa's gotta get his talons in the good stuff before fighting it's like cranberry juice to him. it fixes everything.#'drink cranberry juice and eat radiation to get strong like me' -Raven Beak probably

Ive been waiting for ages in oni for my future industrial block to be vacuumed out so I decided to doodle some furry women while I waited (it’s still not done)
#keese draws#oxygen not included#olivia broussard#jackie stern#trying to hold strong and main tag doodles even if I don’t like some of them#anyways I definitely made my industrial brick Way too big for the things I currently plan on using it for#the main reason I made it so big is that I have two minor volcanoes in it that I may or may not unplug at some point to experiment#I’ve never used magma before so I think it’d be a good thing to try to get comfortable doing#even if I doubt it’ll work out in my case since I imagine having the volcano in the sauna itself could cause problems#mainly that I can only fit so many steam turbines so overheating could still be a problem#I’m hoping that it’ll be balanced out by me not currently having too much stuff in there but idk#in the future once I start digging through my second planet I might use that sauna for natural gas generators#I’d have to adjust some stuff but I think that could be a decent use of my time#especially given that currently I’m relying on a hydrogen vent and coal generators for power#which tbf I am on like cycle 200 smth so that should suffice for a while but eventually I’m going to run out of coal#I’ve been ranchinh sage hatches and pips but I just don’t have the space or resources to farm enough of both to keep up with the coal demand#the main problem with the pips is that almost everywhere is just too cold for arbor trees#and I’m currently using my warmer spaces for bristle berries#now I do have a cool steam vent which I could in theory try to use to warm up a large area for pip farms#but that would be tricky to balance well and I think I’d be better off just trying to work towards space travel and getting access to oil#maybe I can go for slicksters in the meantime? I do have a lot of carbon dioxide sitting around#anyways uhhh doomed toxic yuri on the mind happy pride month or smth idk#the real take I need from everyone is if gravitas goes rainbow for pride month of not

Calcium sulphur batteries (uwu)
Okay, so, i've become interested in z-pinch studies for aerospace purposes (i'm really excited about the prospects, everything works on paper, but i naturally want to actually witness p+N14 fusion for above 0.01% of available protons before i go trying to get the materials to build a real liquid fueled SSTO fusion rocket, especially since there are thousands of folks way smarter than me who have presumably thought of this before and we don't have it yet, so yeah). Anyways, if i want the extremely large electricity input without making my electricity bill higher than a whole month's rent and getting my roommates mad at me, i'll need to collect solar or wind in a battery bank. Since lithium batteries are just about all immoral and expensive (yes i am writing this on a device powered by lithium batteries, it would be lovely if capitalists would take a hint and switch to things that just objectively perform better and are cheaper, but whatever), i figured this would be a nice excuse to experiment around with some new battery designs. Since all of them will require sulphur, i won't be able to really get into it before mid may due to some concerns about the smell and risks of getting sulphur powder everywhere (it's very yellow and hard to clean out), but i felt i might as well share my preliminary ideas. First off, in order to make the organic sulphur polymer, i'm looking to explore mostly citrate based polymers, perhaps with phenylalanine mixed in in order to both give more bulk as well as providing nitrogens for sulphenamides to form. Since i'll need urea later, i was also considering partially polymerizing urea with citric acid and adding that into the molten sulphur mix, but i'm less confident in the stability of that and a bit concerned about the potential noxious fumes produced. Regardless, that's the short of the sulphur cathode, details will definitely change after i refind that paper which went over a great way of preventing insoluble polysulphide production. I'm also gonna experiment with anode material and even the ions i use. I know i said "calcium sulphur batteries" in the title, but due to how common aluminium is and how much easier magnesium is to work with (and the fact that their specific energies are higher), i'll also be considering those two. Even beyond that, there are so many potential anode materials, including even amorphous carbon and carbon nitrides which i'd love to test since there's just so much to improve on and i'd rather do a lot of experiments with cheap to make materials and potentially land on a great solution than accept something subpar because it took less effort. Anyways, of the materials i plan on using, there's magnesium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, calcium chloride, potentially other calcium salts (is the salt with taurine soluble in water? IDK, can't find an answer so i'll test it), charcoal, vegetable oil, urea, and phenylalanine. Those may seem like an unrelated hodgepodge of compounds, but they've been chosen because they're what i have/will soon have and they're also all extremely cheap. If the urea works out well in the battery, i may have to make this project a meme and attempt to make a z-pinch device with as much urine as possible (use it to make ammonia for the plasma, to make the batteries, and i'm sure there's some way to use urine in a capacitor (maybe just distilling off the water to use as a dielectric? idk, it's been a while since i tried making a capacitor)).
Anyway, i really didn't expect this long trainwreck of a post to end with discussions of urine, but what can you do? This is all probably nonsensical, even by my standards, but basically i want batteries and i think i can make them cheaper per megajoule of stored energy than the ones i could buy, even accounting for the inevitable failed experiments.
#utter nonsense#chemistry?#batteries#calcium sulphur batteries are cool i guess#z-pinch shit#almost certainly the beginning of a ton of failures#fortunately i should be able to afford all the chemicals with less than 1 month of income (after rent and utilities and whatnot)#sulphur is so cheap#so am i lol#idk if i want to attempt to make my own solar or wind farm or just buy some turbines or solar cells#turbines are pretty easy so i might build some myself#magnets are relatively cheap and i can use them for other things#and if you know where to look (trashcans behind the college) wire is free#and to make the turbine blades i can just take some sheet metal from the same dumpsters as the wire#alternatively i could just try charging the batteries during off-hours when electricity is super cheap#or making a simple biofuel engine#i should also look into making the capacitors#good bye!

how would you describe coheed and cambria genre-wise? I've seen all sorts of descriptions lol
tough question! I mean they have ska songs and synth heavy dance tracks and straight up metal. so it gets complicated... but I'd call them prog rock with strong metal, emo, and pop-punk flavoring. because of that, and their symphonic elements, prog is really the easiest umbrella? plus long ass album titles and songs with multiple movements is such prog behavior
#you could argue second stage turbine blade is classic 3rd wave emo#and that vaxis ii is straifht pop punk#but because of that theyre just. prog

On episode 3 on "Silo".
Screaming, crying, throwing up on the steam turbine thing.
Why was it installed vertically. Is there some form of cycle with a condenser or where does the steam go. How are the turbine blades not damaged after all those years getting hit by hot, accelerated water droplets. How are they just jump starting the turbine without a warm up period. Why does the turbine work without its casing and where is the steam coming from?
WHY ISN'T THERE A BYPASS?!?!
#I'm sure this gets resolved within the season#it's still the only thing I could focus on the entire time#also ignoring the fact that they don't have a second line to drive redundant in case of failure or repairs#or at least a second turbine on the same shaft#and the vibration that comes from the imbalance of the turbine propably also damaged the bearing and they habe to PRAY#that the generators windings didn't suffer from that#silo apple tv

I'm reminded that many young and rich people today are tech bros and that makes me incredibly sad for aviation
Up until now having a FADEC on your small airplane wasn't super popular, not that it's bad or anything, it's just that most pilots are boomers and like flying their airplane the old fashioned way.
Now the new rich tech bros are starting to get aircraft with full glass instrumentation and FADECs where you only need to move a knob to control the engine. Sure they look cool and the tech is cool but theres something about the old stuff that I just love. And who wants to be bored in an airplane anyways
#if we could i would go back to when turbines had to be started by hand#makes sense why airliners use an automatic start but. starting a turbine is so cool and makes you feel so powerful

if my therapist wants me to quit my job and my psychiatrist wants me to quit my job and I want to quit my job. Why am I not quitting my job
#Trick question it's because I'm scared of being unemployed forever after!!!!!!#Why does no one understand the fear. Like I get it I could work somewhere else I could I really could. But. Could I?#Also I got bills to pay what if it doesn't work#I'm not exactly tight on money right this moment but a single missed paycheck and I'd already be sweating bullets#Nevermind two or three or more months dry#I just really wanna be fired instead and have them pay off the years Ive worked there#Itd amount to a whole goddamn lot of money or at least enough to comfortably search for another job#Maybe even throw in some savings for a house or an apartment with my guy#Ughughfujfif why does this make me so anxious what is this unbelievable vice grip this job has on me... I need to get a degree Jesus#Also I wanna bomb the place I hate everyone in charge they can go get crushed up by a plane turbine my fuckin GOD

My current oni playthrough is generally going well except for the fact that for some ungodly reason I chose a bionic dupe heavy save that is almost completely built around bionic dupes to go for locavore for the first time. For the first 80 or so cycles I had 1 normal dupe. I have only within the past two sessions gotten two more dupes. All three just sit at home and cook occasionally because I can't be assed to set up atmosuit docs for them. I only just today finally got access to a pip. I have been fighting for my god damn life to get any tier 3 research done my poor bionic dupes need their yummy yummy power please let me get steam turbines already so I can do that without boiling my planetoid. I need my weezeworts or I'll die.
#rat rambles#oni posting#thanfully I do have a temprary deep freezer and a lot of food stockpiled thanks to ranching and using wild sleetwheat but I dont have#enough to feel safe taking too many dupes since after I get locavore I want to have some wiggle room while I get my farms set up#because I ultimately only have like 300k kalories of food rn and thatll last my 3 dupes a lil while but in the frand scheme of things not#That long and I will be needing to prepare for feeding them long term#I also should probably. sigh. set up proper suit docks. sighhhhhh.#bionic dupes have spoiled me too much I love not having to properly fill suits#but I probably will need to have more normal dupes for future labor partially due to moral but mostly due to power#I do Not have the resources to power more bionic dupes rn Ive barely managed to scrape by this far#I really Really need those steam turbines so I can properly tap into all my power options#I've been mostly relying on natural gas generators but those alone won't cut it forever#I rly wanna try using petroleum generators since I don't use those often but they produce an absolute fuck ton of heat#so again. steam turbine. shakes and cries.#Im also having to think abt how Im going to get that petroleum and how ambitious I wanna be this run#Im playing around with maybe making my first petroleum boiler using the magma biome but Im not sure if Im prepared for that yet#theoretically I could twiddle my thumbs for a good while before my power situation truly goes to shit but Id rather have a plan#so maybe I should start preparing for that after I get some wild farms set up#Im not even completely sure what plants would be best to wildfarm rn but I can throw shit at the wall and see what sticks#this has all been a very different playstyle for me from how I usually play so Im definitely flailing a bit lol#Im pretty cozy on oxygen at least

re: wind turbines - 12 SG 11-200 DD Siemens Gamesa
Not to be confused with the Jackson, Minnesota wind farm of the same name.
The Best News of Last Week - November 28, 2023
🐑 - Why did Fiona the sheep become a mountaineer? She was tired of the "baa-d" jokes at sea level!
1. Pope Francis dines with transgender women for Vatican luncheon
Pope Francis hosted a group of transgender women — many of whom are sex workers or migrants from Latin America — to a Vatican luncheon for the Catholic Church's "World Day of the Poor" last week.
The pontiff and the transgender women have formed a close relationship since the pope came to their aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were unable to work. Now, they meet monthly for VIP visits with the pope and receive medicine, money and shampoo any day, according to The Associated Press.
2. New York just installed its first offshore wind turbine
The first wind turbine installation at South Fork Wind, New York State’s first offshore wind farm, is complete.
The 130-megawatt (MW) South Fork Wind will be the US’s first completed utility-scale wind farm in federal waters.
3. Anonymous businessman donates $800k to struggling food bank
But this Thanksgiving, a longtime prayer of food bank leaders was finally answered: an anonymous benefactor donated the full $800,000 they needed to move out of a facility they've long outgrown. That benefactor, however, preferred to stay anonymous.
"Very private company, really don't want attention," said Debbie Christian, executive director of the Auburn Food Bank. "It's a goodhearted person that just wants to see the work here continue, wants to see it expand."
4. Empowering woman saving hopes and mental health of suffering Ukrainian kids
Kenza Hadij-Brahim is at the forefront of promoting Circle of Toys
Hadj-Brahim is helping to launch the Circle of Toys initiative. A project that provides Ukrainian children in need of some normality with preloved toys. This new initiative connects people with old toys they might otherwise throw away, with Ukrainian families in need who want to provide some comfort to their children in this distressing time.
Find Refuge said : “The endeavour is driven by a sincere purpose: spark joy, foster play, and bring a hint of normalcy back to the young lives in Ukraine.”
5. TWO LOST CITIES HIDDEN FOR CENTURIES WERE JUST DISCOVERED IN BOLIVIA
Researchers have found these areas not only housed structures and pyramids but it has been uncovered that there were advanced irrigation systems, earthworks, large towns, causeways, and canals that cover miles.
Dr. Heiko Prümers from the German Archaeological Institute, who was also involved in the study comments that “this indicated a relatively dense settlement in pre-Hispanic times. Our goal was to conduct basic research and trace the settlements and life there. The research sheds light on the sheer magnitude and magnificence of the civic-ceremonial centers found buried in the forest”.
6. Sheep dubbed Fiona rescued from cliff in Scotland where she was stuck for more than 2 years
youtube
And at last, some positive climate news:
7. Three positive climate developments
Heating
When the Paris Agreement was adopted, the global reliance on fossil fuels placed the world on a path towards a 3.5C rise in temperature by 2100. Eight years on, country commitments to reduce their carbon footprints have pulled that down slightly, putting the world on a path for a 2.5C to 2.9C by the end of the century.
Peak emissions
Annual greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change have risen roughly nine percent since COP21, according to UN data. But the rate of the increase has slowed significantly. Recent estimates by the Climate Analytics institute find global emissions could peak by 2024
Rising renewables
Three technologies—solar, wind and electric vehicles—are largely behind the improved global warming estimates since 2015.
