There's a real difference here:

She is mean and petty on purpose, but most of the time, it's a big carapace she doesn't know she even wears.

He's truly mean on purpose, with all flavors of pettiness, with a perfect consciousness of his wicked nature and a total embrace of his cruelty.

I always see the "oh it'll kill other things" argument, but never the like. Do you know how many things will eat your cat? They aren't apex predators. Literally any other predator will eat them.
