Desert Salve :::::: for suggested use in wounds, burns, skin irritations, fungal infections and scars. I have made some version of this blend for years now, and folks I have given it to swear by it. My dad works out in the sun all the time and gets sun blisters and damaged spots from years of outdoor labor and he will put this salve on his face and neck as a mild sun protection, and to tend to the spots that seem to take forever to heal. A friend burned his face a few years ago and used this salve after and it greatly reduced healing time and scarring. I have personally stopped a yeast infection in its tracks, without the use of pharmaceuticals, but with this salve as well as straight chaparral oil, which is one ingredient in the blend. Not to say it is a cure all by any means- what works for some people may not work for others, I am merely stating what I have witnessed from its use. Do you know that rich, sweet, balsamy, vanilla-y scent that you sometimes catch a whiff of when walking along the river on a sunny spring day? That’s the scent of balsam buds! The unopened buds exude a thick resin just before unfurling their leaves which has the most delectable scent ever. 💫 This spring, I found a large cottonwood tree which had fallen down in a storm, and the buds were perfectly sticky and resinous! Those sustainably harvested buds have now been infusing in organic olive oil for several months, and I've been trying to think of how to best utilize them because they're amazing for so many things and can only be harvested during a short window each spring... ✨ Then, I tried something new with vanilla! Most vanilla products are made from synthetic fragrances, so I infused organic + fair trade vanilla beans in jojoba oil plus added real vanilla absolute for even more vanilla goodness! The result is divine - a rich and real vanilla infused oil! 🥰 Then I thought... 💭 What if I combined the poplar bud oil with the double-vanilla bean oil, and my head almost exploded with excitement! 🤩 May's facial serum of the month will contain the double-vanilla infusion and the balsam bud infusion, plus a couple of other skin-loving ingredients. We harvested these resinous cottonwood buds from a tree which had fallen down in a storm, they are perfectly open-gooey (as you can see from my resin-coated fingertips if you scroll left) and ready for medicine making! 🌿💛 Collecting the buds from fallen branches or trees is the most ethical and sustainable method because you’re not taking them from living trees (which can result in damage and poor growth if overharvested or harvested incorrectly). These balsam buds are such an incredible medicine and they have a rich, resinous, vanilla-y, sweet aroma which is absolutely amazing! I am totally immersing myself in cottonwood these past 2 weeks. I have sat at the lake freezing my butt of today (again) for at least 2 hours straight while gathering about 5 oz cottonwood buds from the fallen branches. When i am there i can't stop.. when i try to go home i keep seeing fat juicy buds on fallen branches all around me. Its a wild crafters dream down there by the waterside.. im experimenting with some buds by turning them into holy smoke.. I showed my daughter the witch finger that each tip of each branch of the cottonwood is. She looked at me with twinklings in her eyes while she took down the leaves of a cottonwood branch.. in search if her own witch finger.. i went on doing the dishes when she came up to me with massive excitement written all over her..while declaring she didn't only find a witch finger but a whole witches hand! Yesterday on my walk home to the farmers market under a tall mama cottonwood tree i found i huge cottonwood limb on the side of the road. It had broken off recently judging from the fresh fragrant buds. I had found it before the market started that morning. But i had no time to spend on gathering any buds because i had to prepare my table at the market. The whole time i was there i thought of its beautiful buds..they had their resin spilling out like honey.. By the time i could finally go there it was already dark. But i had to go and gather these gifts. So there i was standing on the side of a small road in the pitch dark feeling up and down the branches with my fingers-tips to locate the spiky buds. At one point i even walked right into a huge burdock plant that grew besides the broken off limb.. and if you know a little bit about burdock and how it looks in autumn you can probably imagine how i looked and felt at that moment when i realized what had happened. Not so fun! My whole body was covered in little sticky balls that penetrated all of my clothing. Besides from the fact that i couldnt tear them all off without ruining my sweater i also was itching everywhere... I looked like a wild woman living i the woods her whole life instead of a city girl. And honestly i normally don't give a fuck when it comes to that. But i normally only roam the woods close to where i live..at biking distance. And now i was i long way from home and to get home i was looking at 1,5 hours in public transport between tourist and drunk party folks before i could close my front door behind me. And i was a little nervous as to what the party people would say about my wild woman's outfit. 😀 But than again things like fresh cottonwood buds dont come easy right?
