Sometimes you need to step out of your comfort zone COMPLETELY and paint something you have never ever done before. Bonus points if it'll be a gift for someone close. I painted this donkey portrait a few days ago for my mom. An introduction to the actual gift: a walk&picknick with a donkey. I learnt that I prefer to gift handmade things, especially for special people. So I decided to paint this portrait. It was challenging, but very fun to do as well. Decided to experiment with the Dusk Yellow watercolour from Van Gogh. It's absokutely beautiful, but super hard to mix! This is total one shot experiment, I didn't look into mixing this colour or sketching before at all. It was a challenge, but I enjoyed it! These dusk colours are beautiful. I still need to figure them out properly, since I'm not very fond of the way they dry in my sketchbook. The colour seems to split up in two pigments and I should figure out of thay always happens or if it's a matter of paper. In times of chaos, paint chaos. Or sonething like that? I don't know, the past few days have just been weird. We're living in a rather strange time right now. However I actually don't want to pay too much attention (by posting about it, I read the news more than ever) to the situarion around this new virus I'm doing anyway. The virus itself doesn't scare me that much, but I'm more concerned about the way other people react. I knew people from my country can be rather seldfish, always on the hurry, putting themselves first and only think of other peoples well-being when they are told to do so. But I never expected these people to go all apeshit and literally fight for milk/toilet paper in supermarkets. I'm disappointed. Then there's the the fact that a lot of places are closed. No scouting for several weeks. No sports, no cafes or restaurants, but also no school/college anymore until April 6th. Which is weird for someone who actually enjoys going to school. And what will the consequences be? Going back to school in summer? Or during the spring break? But the thing that concerns me the most is that no one knows for how long this will go on. Besides the negativity, stress and for some people panic there's also a lot of positivity in this situation and I don't want to complain. I get the time to catch up on homework. I can spend more time on art and music, which will hopefully help me get over certain insecurities. I hopefully get to spend more time with my love as well. Hopefully everyone stays safe and happy out there! Back to experimenting! As you may have noticed, my past works were almost all painted on blues and greys. I decoded it was time to step a little bit out of that comfortzone and try something new. Colours I hardly ever use. And honestly: I loved it! I'm not much a fan of the painting on top but I LOVE the reds and purples from the bottom painting. I might explore those a bit more 😊 This is also a result of me wanting to try new things. New art supplies. New watercolours and paper etc. But it won't happen yet. Distorted forest I've had a few busy and stressful days due to school and deadlines, but I'm back and enetgized again! Lately I've been trying to find a way to mix colours properly so I get muted tones, because I love how magical they look. I was quite satisfied with how this pink/purple-ish colour turned out! I mixed dioxazine violet, permanent rose, Indian red, sap green and some payne's grey to make it to this colour. Depending on how dark/light I wanted to have it, I used more or less from one colour or the other. Mixing is a super fun process, especially since I'm getting less and less scares to experiment and therefore ruin my paper. Experimenting is part of the process of getting better and finding your 'own' style. It feels very relieving. Experimenting with colours! 🎨 Yesterday I ordered a few new watercolours. For weeks I've been thinking about trying new brands, so I decided to treat myself. I ordered a few colours from White Nights and I am EXCITED! 😊 I've been using the same brand for years. I'm very happy with it and I love using them, but I simply wanted to try something new. While waiting I'm experimenting with mixing colours. I learned I LOVE muted colours, but I don't have any muted colours in my palettes, so I need to find a way to create my own. It's a challenging but interesting journey! I'm not entirely sure if I managed to find what I'm looking for with this piece, but I absolutely love these mixes. Because I simply can't get enough of these colours! Payne's grey, indigo and cadmium orange, all by @winsorandnewton When I started painting with these colours about 2 weeks ago, my half pan pf Payne's grey was almost completely full. Now it's about 50% empty. Oops! I want to try a new brand once I run out of this one. Any suggestions? Forests always calm me down. I love being surrounded by trees, the sound of birds, away from the crowded city. Lately there have been a lot of storms that made it unsafe to go to the nearby forest. When the storms calmed down, school called 🤷🏼‍♀️ I truly hope I will be able to visit the forest soon again. I miss that place. 🌿 Where do you go/what do you do to calm down and get rid of stress? This is fun! A few days ago one of my favourite artists ( @artchiu ) released a two part collaboration tutorial with @peerlesswatercolors about negative painting. Mystic and Skeksis - The Dark Crystal It's been a while again! These days, weeks even, are crazy. I don't want to spend too many words on what is going on in the world. I did that the last time already. What I want to say is how much I did not expect the quarantine days to affect my creative flow so badly. I was very motivated to finish this sketchbook before April 6th (which was the first 'final' date mentioned by our government, but things changed). Only 2 pages a day. That seemed pretty doable. Not. So... Instead of getting angry with myself for not painting as much as I planned to, I told myself it's good to step away for a bit Rushing often isn't good for you and since I have quite a lot of spare time... Why should I rush and force myself? Some time ago I watched the original The Dark Crystal movie and then moved on to the series on Netflix. I'm still not entirely sure what I think about it. I definitely enjoy it, but I am not too enthusiastic about it either. Well, I wasn't. The more I watch and read about it, the more I start loving it. Quick watercolour sketch - Elephant Yesterday I looked at the new prompt for #inktober52 which is a weekly @inktober challenge. It was the 12th prompt and the only one I've used so far. It was late in the evening, I was tired but hadn't managed to paint 2 pages from my almost full sketchbook yet (see my previous post). I decided to keep it simple: payne's grey from @winsorandnewton and sketchy lines done with a Micron fineliner. The days at home are already getting boring and we're only one week in. I've been painting a lot, playing guitar and stare and my laptop screen for way too long these days. I'm trying to catch up on procrastinated homework, but damn, I want to do something outside of my room. I want to go outside with my love or go to the cat cafe together or whatever else. Keeping it simple again! 😊 I started this sketchbook with the promise to myself I'd use this sketchbook for simple doodles as well. As long as I'm working in it, everything is fine. And, oh dear, it's amazing to let loose high expectations of yourself and what you create every now and then! I picked the colours I used in the painting from my previous post and created some circles, adding fineliner circles among them. It was simple, yet very satisfying, relaxing and mind-clearing. It's something I recommend everyone! In the meantime I am still very excited about receiving the watercolours I ordered. I expect them to be delivered in the upcoming few days and can't wait to test them! Besides that I'm almost halfway my current sketchbook (which I started using less than a month ago), so I'll have to get a new one soon. I'm also excited for that! "I. Drink. Your. Milkshake! I drink it UP!" Probable the most famous words from the legendary movie There Will Be Blood, which I dedicated the first page of my new sketchbook to. Specifically the scene where the oil derrick catches fire. I didn't want to create an exact copy of this scene- the impression is more important to me. If you wwnt to experience this scene, watch the movie. I watched this movie for the first time over a year ago and have been thinking about it a lot since then. Even though not much happens in the movie, it's definitely one of my favourite movies ever. The music, the compositions, the colours... And don't forget Daniel Day Lewis' AMAZING acting! Everything is amazing. Even though I haven't watched it again (yet), it inspires me. I've been talking about it a lot in the past few days. It is done! I finished another sketchbook 🎉😄 The feeling of finishing something simply is amazing. Especially when it's filled with your own ideas and observations. That makes the finished product a juge part of you. At least that's how I look at it. My last page contains a lot of tiny ghosts painted in indigo from Winsor&Newton's Cotman series. I love the colour, I love these paints, but I want to try something new. Another brand. On the right side you can see a part of my art supplies wishlist 😅 Anyway, now this sketchbook is finished I can finally start in my new one! The new one is a Stillman & Birn Zeta sketchbook. I love the Delta series, so let's see what the Zeta one brings. But now the real queation is: what to do with the first page of my new sketchbook?
