One of the wonderful things in the Queen's Thief series:
In King of Attolia, Costis is very clear that he's pretty average. He lets the reader know consistently that other people in the guard are more attractive or better swordsmen. He seems to be the epitome of Just Some Guy.
In Thick as Thieves, Kamet needs you to know that Costis glows in the sun. Costis is so pretty everyone wants to sleep with him or assumes everyone else wants to sleep with him. Costis is so strong he beats an elite team of highly trained fighters. Costis's rippling muscles glisten with sweat. Etc.
And it's a great reminder of one of the central storytelling conceits of the books, which is that there's no such thing as an objective narrator. Everyone is to some degree unreliable.
Costis is very humble and also kind of oblivious. He's shocked to learn that apparently everyone has tacitly agreed he's the natural successor to Teleus. We can't really trust him to tell us if he is in any way exceptional.
Kamet, on the other hand, is thirsty and in denial. He's lying to himself about his own attraction to Costis, and convincing himself it's just some kind of journalistic integrity to tell the reader what Costis's muscles are doing in any given situation. We can't really trust him either.
Queen's Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, the series that wants you to know: no narrator is reliable!

There are many reasons why the King of Attolia is my favorite book in TQT, honestly. It's just-- he's far from home but he's with the woman he loves. He's been forced into a role he doesn't want, but he's doing his best to learn everything he can about it so he can do it well. He acts like a fool and lets his courtiers make fun of him but he knows exactly what he's doing. Everyone thinks he's torturing poor Costis but he's actually making a friend in his own unique way, and finding an ally. It's this combination of "kid far from home looking for anyone as a friend and ally" and "genius plotter getting rid of his enemies and also winning the loyalty of everyone around him using the world's most convoluted plan possible" all while he's also navigating a new marriage
The second best part is Aulus and Boagus

costis gets sent on an international espionage mission purely because he is nice+fun. his king, a master manipulator, admits that there is no move he could have made in this moment that would have been more effective than simply letting his favourite guy have fun and be himself. kamet is enduring the most stressful months of his life in one of the most audacious political heists in history and costis is just getting some enrichment

Gen from The Queen's Thief series is The Character of All Time because what he really wants is to play the kooky neighbor/best friend in the sitcom of life while also simultaneously directing the episode. He wants to have a few funny, memorable lines, whilst behind the scenes he controls everything and bends the world to his will. Instead, the network executives (destiny, fate, the gods, what have you) decided he was too hot to play the goofy best friend and cast him as the main character, named the series after him, and locked him into a ten-year contract, and Gen spends the rest of his life being pissed about it.

I cannot praise enough the portrayal of romance in the Queen’s Thief books. Jane Austen level romance and sexual tension and chemistry built on purely vibes. Not a smut scene in sight not even a descriptive kissing scene.
