I just came across this film "Firebird" about a queer love in the Soviet military, based on a real story, that's being released soon. And I found it interesting in the interviews of both the lead actor and the director I've read so far how they push back against the "only (out) queer people should play queer roles". They are both out (which interestingly IS mentioned in almost every article). Also looking at some non-English speaking recent queer films where I can find very little info about the casts' sexualities, makes me wonder how the size of a project and the celebrity of the people involved plays into the discussion. I imagine it only heightens the pressure "to get it right" castingwise (whatever that may look like) but also makes it much more unlikely and risky for the actors to actually be or come out. I'm so impatiently waiting for news on My Policeman, so curious to see how they will work with this.

Firebird anon again, I read another really interesting interview with Peeter Rebane and Tom Prior where they discuss the casting issue more in detail and make both points in favour and against - it's in German but here's the link: https://www.maenner.media/kultur/film/peeter-rebane-und-tom-prior-%E2%80%9Efirebird%E2%80%9C/ Prior says among other things, it shouldn't come to it that casting agents asks after sexual identity and Rebane says for the British Independent Film Awards he was recently asked to give information if his coworkers/employees (not sure about the translation, the word can mean both) from costumdesigner to camera guy are queer or not and he wouldn't ever do that. Both because it's not his place to do so and it's not information he has any business knowing. I didn't know that has expanded to the people working on the production and am a bit shocked about it. Like, who is collecting info like that for what purpose and who has access to it? I think that has a much bigger potential to make queer people working on film sets more unsafe, rather than contributing to less discrimination and more representation (if those were the goals).

Thanks for sharing anon - that's a really interesting example with really good points. I'm glad that people are putting those alternative views, because I think there are really important things that 'queer people for queer roles' just erases entirely.

I think it's really important to hold the line on basic principles like: 'employers are not entitled to know your sexuality'. And think for a couple of seconds about who might be most vulnerable in alternative situations.
