Kamala Harris has apparently picked Tim Walz as her running mate. He seems good, based on his record. He's also responsible for the widely spreading "Republicans are weird" meme I've seen quite a lot of.

Walz condemned Hamas's October 7 attacks in Israel and ordered flags to be lowered to half mast in the following days. After the 2024 Minnesota Democratic presidential primary, in which 19% of voters cast "uncommitted" ballots, Walz took a sympathetic view toward those doing so to protest President Biden's handling of the war in Gaza, calling them "civically engaged". Of the protests against U.S. funding of the war in Gaza, Walz said: "This issue is a humanitarian crisis. They have every right to be heard... These folks are asking for a change in course, they're asking for more pressure to be put on… You can hold competing things: that Israel has the right to defend itself, and the atrocities of October 7 are unacceptable, but Palestinian civilians being caught in this… has got to end." Walz also said he supports a ceasefire in Gaza.[100]

I'm Back with a thought for these dark times. In 2018, on a whim, I tossed a cheek swab into the Be The Match bone marrow registry. I'm adopted and know nothing about my birth family, but I thought if they're out there and one of them needed help it would be nice to be able to be that person. After five years, a couple of days ago, my phone rang.
I am a possible match for a kid who's fighting leukemia. I just went in this morning for blood testing to confirm. If the match is confirmed, I'll be donating marrow within the next few months. I don't know anything about them yet, much less if we're related, but to be honest - I don't care. I am forty-three years old and I have no children. If I can give this kid a chance at life, that'll be something I can be proud of forever.

----YOU WERE WARNED FRIENDS---- Donation isn't as scary as people think. Turns out there are two methods, and the one you're likely thinking about (with the big needle) isn't nearly as bad as the way people make it sound.
If the recipient is an adult or bigger kid, you can donate through IV. They give you a drug to make your bone twinkies make extra delicious filling, plug you into a machine on both arms kinda like dialysis, and they just filter out the extra stem cells through that machine and circulate your blood back into you. This is now the method used most commonly. It's outpatient and requires NO sedation. If the recipient is a little kid or there are other factors, the older method is still used. That's about a 90-minute procedure under general anaesthesia (yes, they'll knock me out), they slurp the extra marrow from your pelvis, and off you go. It's OUTPATIENT. There'll be a lifting restriction / light duty at work for like A WEEK.
That's IT. Easy peasy. The marrow registry covers all my costs and makes sure my job is protected while I get this done, and a kid gets to live.
The odds of finding a match are kinda like being hit by lightning, especially when the donor is a stranger. This kid, whoever she is, might be related to me - or she might not. Either way, it's free nibling. In sum, there are all kinds of reasons to become a donor or not. It's a very personal thing. But I encourage anyone and everyone to sign up if you're able, because you never know. There might be someone out there who could live a full life on the strength of your kindness.

“At this time of digital transformation, technology doesn’t necessarily imply an increase in cost,” says Giovanni Cerri, former São Paulo Secretary of Health and chairman of the board of Inova HC, the technological innovation center at the Hospital das Clínicas at the University of São Paulo (USP). “Solutions for remote consultations, exams, and treatments, for example, can enhance access to the healthcare system while reducing costs,” he adds.
In the field of genetics, the 2022 completion of human genome mapping has unlocked the ability to identify genes responsible for thousands of diseases and discover variations that provide protection against harmful mutations. Mayana Zatz, professor of genetics at USP and coordinator of the Center for Human Genome and Stem Cell Studies, elaborates: “If we discover that a gene produces a substance that shields against certain diseases, we can develop drugs based on that substance for individuals who lack the protective genetic variation.”
Gene therapy, another promising frontier, involves altering a patient’s genetic material to treat various cancers, sickle cell anemia, and congenital blindness.
