Thursday Night Link Roundup - September 10th (ish)
Ever have a week-long depressive funk and you canāt tell if itās because of hormones (surfing the crimson wave), injury (somehow fucked up my foot in a week when all I did was sit on my ass??), or friend group drama (oi), or just all of them happening at the same time.
But yeah, I had a bit of a week filled with the Sads. How are you guys?
Our first video: Star Trek Voyager Is Good, Actually by Renegade Cut.
youtube
I appreciate the hell out of this video. Voyager is one of my favorite Treks, for a lot of the reasons that are in this video and it was nice to see someone else appreciate it. Iā¦ hate Discovery. Itās all flash and no substance and people running around yelling āI love math/science!ā and a severe lack of ethical quandaries. I know that not everyone likes the wholeā¦ āweāre basically in an ethics classā part about Star Trek, but likeā¦ maybe donāt watch or write Star Trek if you donāt like it?Ā
Star Trek is supposed to be Spec Fic, notā¦ you know.. Star Wars.
Also Janeway is my favorite captain and you can fight me if you donāt like it.
Another video from MelinaPendulm, Black Sci-Fi & Fantasy + BOOK RECOMMENDS.
youtube
Iāve written all the authors and books/short stories/etc. she listed down, and I need to get a bunch and read them before I go back to writing again. Iāve been doing a lot of writing and story planning lately and no book reading and need to likeā¦ make a list of things to read and then make some time.
From Hello Future Me, On Worldbuilding: Class, Wealth, and Power. The beginning totally threw me off and I started laughing and had to start it over lol.
youtube
This is another one of those dense, dense videos that I need to go back and take notes from.Ā
Then he almost killed me a second time when he slipped into āYES! COMRADES!ā again lol.
I donāt even know how to introduce this one. Itās from cosmavoid, and itās āDavid Lynch being a madman for a relentless 8 minutes and 30 secondsā
youtube
I just likeā¦ aspire to be this weird? I know itās probably odd to have such an aspiration, but likeā¦ I guess we both have Monica Bellucci dreams, and think that both wood and Laura Dern are pretty fucking amazing.
Mood.
I actually had another video for the fun bit this week, but I had to put the newest King video by Daniel Thrasher instead, āWhen the king takes a piano lesson in medieval timesā
youtube
āNow shut up and let me finger your button-box!ā A phrase I never could have even imagined to possibly exist.
Songs of the Week:
GlassDuo - Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdoTdG_VNV4
Honestly, someone in the comments said this song was made for the glass harp, and likeā¦ when youāre right, youāre right.
Grantwoolard - Classical Music Mashup
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OYkWSW7u4k
This likeā¦ I donāt know. I was listening to it in bed one night after falling down a classical music hole and it sort of blew my mind. I do wish some of the combinations went on for longer though, but I suppose āI love this, please make moreā isnāt really a criticism, lol.
bill wurtz - and the day goes on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHZr6P1csiY
I donāt know how I missed this when it came out two years ago, but itās such a nice little ditty. Like, reassuring somehow? Anyway, āspeaking of genius, hereās Bill Wurtz.ā

What nonfiction kaiju eiga books do you recommend?
Age of the Gods - A History of the Japanese Fantasy Filmby Guy Tucker
A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Seriesby David Kalat (Iāve only read the 1997 printing; the second edition adds information on the Millennium series, and apparently includes substantial revisions to the rest of the text)
Japan's Favorite Mon-Star: The Unauthorized Biography of "The Big G"by Steve Ryfle
Monsters Are Attacking Tokyo! by Stuart Galbraith IV
King Kong: The History of a Movie Icon from Fay Wray to Peter Jackson by Ray Morton
Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monstersby August Ragone
Pacific Rim: Man, Machines & Monsters by David S. Cohen
Godzilla: The Art of Destruction by Mark Cotta Vaz
The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films by John LeMay
And keep an eye out for The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Godzilla by Ed Godziszewski; Iāve heard good things about that one, but have never been able to obtain a copy. (Thanks to Toho, only about a thousand were printed.) Godziszewski and Ryfle also have a book on Ishiro Honda coming out in October, which Iāll likely add to the list as soon as I finish it.
Finally, while I canāt recommend Godzilla on My Mind by William Tsutsui as highly as the above titles, it was myfirst book in this narrow genre and still makes for a good read.

Are you going to G-Fest this year?
Iām not, no. My first time going in 2014 was absolutely incredible, and last year was a lot of fun too, but ultimately itās just too much money for what amounts to a five day trip. Seeing and hanging out with good friends aside, thereās not a whole lot pulling me back to G-FEST at the moment. Iāve had my great experiences, and meeting Takarada last year was a proper ābucket listā moment for me, and it was my main reason for going back. Iāve no doubt Iāll be back at some point, but not in the foreseeable future.

Since @cosmavoidās video got me thinking about it, I think it should be mentioned that Tron: LegacyĀ continues the fairly subtle religious subtext from the original Tron.Ā In the original we have, among other things, a stealthy perspective flip of the story of Jesus, in that a human walks among their creations - beings that are so minute in power compared to him that he didnāt even realize they were alive until he walked among them - and eventually sacrifices his life in their plane of existence to save them all, basically giving us a perspective flip on theĀ āthe gods secretly walk among usā story wherein humansĀ are the gods and their creations are the mortals.
Tron: Legacy, then, plays out like a sort of twisted ParadiseĀ Lost, where the Satan figure is made explicitly in the Godās image, while Adam is a normal (and, in the Tron world, god-like) human, and Eve, rather than being the key to mortal-kindās damnation, is instead the apex of the mortal world - the first mortal to ascend.Ā Hell, part of the reason she ascends - why sheās MORE than the average āmortalā in her plane of existence - is her curiosity and desire for knowledge, the exact trait that damned Eve in Genesis and Paradise Lost!Ā Ā
The same basic archetypes are present - God, Satan, Adam, Eve, and even the choirs of helpful angels and wicked devils in the forms of the other programs, but the way the story plays out is utterly different, and in a way more hopeful becauseĀ the God figure is a flawed human being rather than an omnipotent and omniscient super being.
Itās kinda neat.
