I think it would be fun to have a kind of middle-tier prestige TV series that takes place in the runup to the US Civil War, ending once the Civil War starts. It would maybe start around the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and end, as a series finale, with the first cannon shot at Fort Sumpter.
Trace a variety of different characters, from high-level politicians like William Seward and Alexander Stephens to more on-the-ground perspectives from people like John Brown and Samuel J. Jones. Washington DC and Kansas would definitely be important theaters of action, with iconic events like the assault on Charles Sumner and the Pottawatomie Massacre, but maybe a few scenes could be elsewhere: Harriet Tubman guiding some enslaved families from far in the south to Canada, what Brigham Young and the Mormons are up to, etc.
It would be cool to draw on as many primary sources to show all perspectives, warts and all. It wouldn't be "both sides have a point" stuff so much as "damn, that Upper Midwestern Republican just said he wanted his state to be a white land purged of native people and free of all black people slave or free and mooted deporting all black people to Africa, and he still isn't as much of an asshole as that fire-eater who wanted to conquer South America and the Caribbean and expand slave plantations all over the Western hemisphere."
It would be interesting to see people's doomed attempts to keep everything peaceful, like the Corwin amendment and such, and why they ultimately failed.
