Lucky/Unlucky 13th Episode of Sotsu [Spoilers as usual]
That episode was pretty enlightening to be honest. I’m going to cut straight to the things that made it so interesting.
So within 15 seconds in of the episode Vier was mentioned by Eua; “Learning Vier had lost her memories truly spoiled my fun.” Vier is a character from Ciconia, a branching story of its own in Ryukishi07′s franchise. I haven’t played Ciconia before and had to look this up. Call me a fake fan or whatever, I’m going to branch out into the franchise more when I get the chance. Anyways, Vier is a spot on replica of Miyo Takano from the Higurashi series. This is pretty huge and can basically confirm what they’re doing when it comes to how the Gods play in the story. They’re just hoping from boards/stories of the other franchises. They’re the same people but in a different universe and have different lives. I like that tie in actually, real cool. So to put it in a broader perspective, Eua/Hanyuu are the same God running the stories from a distance. Kind of like the Watcher in Marvel’s “What If...?” series but they take more action. Let’s actually jump in how Eua and Hanyuu are the same yea?
In the last episode, Eua called Hanyuu her “darling failure” which could mean they were the same person or one had more power over the other. The episode flat out said, “Yea, they’re the same person fam.” Eua says, and I quote, “Though it pains me to admit that you are a part of me.” My guess theory on them being split was correct in a way. They’re the same person and its the complex of good and evil if you boil it down to how they’re represented in the series. And Hanyuu would be considered the original since she’s Oyashiro while also being a critical character in the story over the years, give or take.
Also, let’s take a quick note on the conversation they had between each other, it’s important in a way. So Eua says that they both have players on the board, Satoko and Rika. Rika was a mistake on Hanyuu’s end which causes her to call out Satoko to be the same. But I don’t think neither of them were a mistake. Here’s why, Hanyuu was basically at a low point in her life and seeing Rika being born into the family while resembling her daughter gave her purpose again. We all know a happy ending wasn’t in the cards when this happened. Hanyuu reacted because she wanted to be happy, a selfish act after losing everything. If I were in her shoes I would’ve done the same thing. But I’m not, just making an analysis theory on the franchise. Anyways as for Eua, her action was also selfish reaction. Entertainment. You can totally disagree with me and say they both acted on error which caused the events to occur. But I see it another way and that’s totally fine. We just vibin to Higurashi.
Now this one part in the episode made me a bit upset but also made sense as to why it would happen. “The miracle.” It’s in quotes for a reason. So after Satoko finally mind breaks Rika with that ritual dance, Rika is all for staying in Higurashi. A good end is about to happen, right? R I G H T ? We all know what went down. But it gave us some missing pieces to lead towards said miracle. Remember how it’s been stated in Gou and Sotsu that the more times looper’s loop they can unintentionally cause everyone around them to remember past fragments. That sentence should easily give away how that miracle occurred, Rika got closer to Satoko and the last fragment memories were sprinkled in. Though, I highly doubt Rika was alive to remember hearing Rena screech in fear as Satoko was ending Detective Oishi’s life along with her own. She went back to the fragment world once her brain was cracked. I think they added that bit in for the sake of “miracle” to occur. Cheap move in a way, can’t lie. But just that one fleeting memory of her being “alive” to hear Satoko be the other looper and make herself present as the villain. To me, just Satoko turning to her with beaming red eyes and the gun would’ve been enough to showcase that she was the obstacle in her winning world. Just my little grievance but either way makes everything pace along pleasantly.
My guess is in the next episode Rika is going to remember and start fighting with Satoko and she retaliate. Hanyuu and Eua will basically fight as well which will have the good ending which is Rika being free of the loops and live her life. But a part of me thinks that the good ending might not happen cause of conflict between the two, Rika and Satoko. Just gotta wait and see in like a day and some hours. It’ll be a good one cause it’ll most likely have new content that we haven’t seen. Either way, I’m ready and can’t wait to dissect it after a few watches and share my thoughts with you guys :D

Understanding Gender Dynamics in Touhou and Historical Japan (Part One)
tl;drs in bold, so you can skim parts that you’re not interested in.
This is the first half of a two part essay on the interpretation of gender dynamics in Touhou, which is part of a larger series of essays on the geared to help western consumers of eastern media recognize how their cultural values differ from historical eastern ones so that they may better learn to understand the cultural background of the media they consume. While the focus will be on Japan because of its current cultural dominance in entertainment, the epistemological guidelines I give can be used to better analyze our approaches towards understanding different cultures with a more critical eye.
I started writing this in response to this video post by @thejorlosopher (provocatively titled “There Are No Women in Gensokyo”), because @turbobyakuren was the only watcher to recognize that imposing western values upon a Japanese work that draws heavily from historical Japanese values erases their culture AND results in a faulty analysis.
I then realized that it was difficult for consumers immersed in western culture to realize that a different set of values govern eastern media because:
A) their cultural dominance is rarely challenged enough for them to realize that their values are not universal and unequivocal across all cultures
B) understanding current eastern values requires a historic and government context of the ancient philosophies that influenced them because of the strictness by which governments imposed the enforcement of their values, and there concepts so fundamentally interconnected that any overview will always be incomplete.
B draws from a tenet true for all pursuits of knowledge; the further you go, the more context and scope is required, and so it is not possible for any singular person to possess the absolute expanse of experience to know everything about a singular subject. There are those who can be called masters in a field, but never those who can be said to have mastered a field. It is therefore imperative that we all approach education with the mindset of students.
So, this first part focuses critical thinking practices that have helped me as a student of global customs with learning to identify ignorance of cultural and behavioral mores and how to work to lessen it.
You don’t need to watch Jorlosopher’s video to read this analysis because A) I cite the specific line I am referring to when using it a segue and B) I find it to be deeply flawed and shallow. That said, I encourage you to watch the video first and freely form your own thoughts if you intend to participate in that part of the discussion so that my views will not colour your interpretations of it.
POOR CRITICAL META-ANALYSIS AND IGNORANCE OF IGNORANCE
Jorlosopher, there were some good points made in your video, but many more mistakes. For one, you're ignoring the cardinal rule of artistic interpretation: do not assert that your interpretation is the only correct one. That discourages constructive discussion and invites meaningless echoing or argumentative head-butting that does not serve to constructively develop ideas, and narrow-mindedly discounts the possibility of others coming to different conclusions because of their differing experiences and background. Or, as ZUN put it (though I can’t find the exact quote), everyone has their own personal Gensokyo, and they're all equally real.
So, I'm not going to argue that your interpretation is incorrect, because it is a valid prediction of how our societal constructs might appear in Gensokyo according to your existing cognitive schema, but I will argue that your interpretation is weakly supported and too drenched in existing prejudiced rhetoric to be valid as a thoughtpiece on gender dynamics, and give you some advice on how to rectify those mistakes.
First off, from a purely structural standpoint, you lack a coherent message on gender dynamics in Touhou other than the title, because your statements about Gensokyo blatantly ignore the vast Eastern influence on the setting, and have no supporting evidence for your insubstantially simplistic claims.
"But Cloudy, this is a casual thing, it's made for fans of Touhou who are already familiar with the world I'm talking about!"
Again-- your interpretation of Touhou canon is not the only correct one, and as it is expansive, you will forget and misremember some things and continuously form interpretations as you read that will influence interpretations of future things you read. Therefore, it is imperative that you cite sources when interpreting large bodies of work and promoting your interpretation so that people can see the chain of thought behind your reasoning. Also, by applying academic scrutiny of gender dynamics to Touhou, Jorlosopher invites not only academic counter-scrutiny and meta-scrutiny but also the nerds who take that stuff super seriously, and I am nothing if not a huge nerd.
So, friendly advice: please kindly cite your sources, and evaluate your own biases, or nerds will beat you up and steal your nerd card and also possibly your lunch money.
REFUTATION OF “THERE ARE NO WOMEN IN GENSOKYO“
You have next to no supporting arguments for your claim that “there are no concepts of womanhood in Gensokyo”, as you have no sources or examples to base your claim on. The strongest argument that you have is not, in fact, your rhetoric but rather a quote from @asa-turney misrepresented to suit a simplistic and shallow model of the concept of gender that does not even acknowledge the existence of nonbinary spectrum of gendered concepts in Touhou and eastern media as a whole. Asa has repeatedly and thoughtfully explored the relationship between androgyny of traits in anime and our modern conceptions of gender, so the fact that you would use a quote from an advocate of diverse gender expression to justify an interpretive view that marginalizes diverse gender expressions demonstrates a lack of credible ability to analyze the context of ideas.
It’s also a useful gauge of academic validity, because good scholars must know how to evaluate the not only the context of their field, but also the context of their arguments. You cannot trust someone to possess the intellectual integrity to thoughtfully analyze broad, complex topics if they cannot thoughtfully analyze their own narrow claims.
Jorlosopher’s claim: "The fact that there is only one gender creates a plain in which there are no genders [in Touhou]."
Asa’s quote: “What does ‘being a female’ mean in Gensokyo? It means something, and means nothing at the same time. They’re all female because they’re drawn with a certain aesthetic in mind, but gender identity never comes into play because no one is treated differently for filling any particular role as any particular gender.”
Asa's quote focuses more on the inequality of gender dynamics than the expression of gender identity-- Gensokyo is appealing because in its internal logic, there are none of the dynamics that reward masculine traits and demean feminine ones, or punish people for possessing or lacking masculine or feminine traits that society says they shouldn't. This does not mean, however, that the association of masculinity and femininity do not exist, as they are cultural concepts held and dictated by the society that Touhou is based upon and explores the traditions of. By failing to identify or acknowledge these masculine/feminine associations and dynamics, however, you strip away a deep level of complexity and artistic accomplishment of Touhou as a series and deminishes the impact of Japanese culture upon the world of modern media.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ANALYZE GENDER DYNAMICS?
However, I disagree with Asa’s claim that “gender identity never comes into play because no one is treated differently for filling any particular role as any particular gender,” because it restricts the exploration of gender dynamics only to how they are used to deprecate people, and thus implies that gender dynamics can only be used for prejudice. This conflation of “gender dynamics” with “gender prejudice” is what Jorlosopher’s claim relies on, when gender dynamics can and have been used to artistically and scientifically further our understanding of human experience, such as in the romanticised strength and valour of literary heroes like Karna or Mulan or in the appreciation of human beauty spurred Renaissance artists to pioneer the modern field of anatomy. We must consider what it means to explore gender in a way that is not purely dictated by ignorant opponents in order to promote the positive awareness needed to overwrite this ignorance so that more constructive debate and discussion can occur.
I define gender identity from an epistemological perspective as the words and ideas used by people to describe and communicate a specific permutation of “feminine” and “masculine” traits, whether they be visual, biological, social, or mental, as well as absent, concurrent, or contradictory, both in terms of how they are used to describe oneself and how they are used to describe others. The key to exploring gender, by that definition, lies in recognizing what standards and values define masculinity and femininity across various cultural contexts.
And there definitely exists a deliberate interplay of masculine and feminine motifs in Touhou names, designs, and personalities, most prominently with Marisa and Miko, which serves to highlight the ephemerality of social constructs like gendered associations and lampshade the futility of trying to simplify such natural ambiguity by confining it to rigid absolutes, but that’s a topic that can’t be tackled without an exploration of the impacts that the philosophies behind eastern religions have had on perceptions and the development of common modes of thought.
A LACK OF MEN DOES NOT MEAN A LACK OF CONTEXT FOR GENDER
Jorlosopher’s claim: "There is no significant population of men impose traits onto...therefore these traits will not be discouraged in women."
First, there's no unshakeable evidence either way on just how many men exist in Gensokyo. There's not even the argument of stable populations to consider because for all we know, the Human Village could be 99% gays granted fertility through prayers and divine intervention, so I'll grant you benefit of doubt for the premise, instead of immediately refuting it with, "The Human Village has a notable male population, and Gensokyo split off in the 1800s when human society in Japan had already developed gender roles and biases which then influence the youkai they create and bestow them with those same gendered preconceptions, so while sexism might be nonexistent in Gensokyo thanks to the importance of traditionally feminine professions such as shrine maidens in their society, this does not mean that sexism never existed in the first place, but rather that it was overcome by granting all people the same agency of opportunity that used to be reserved exclusively for men."
I will, however, strongly imply that instead.
Second, your representation of gender discrimination against women revolves solely on men, and only addresses one possible avenue of prejudice when in fact the rationales between all sorts of prejudice are connected. The prejudice formula can be broadly boiled down to down to “If discrimination of groups exist, then comparisons of groups exist. If comparisons of groups exist, then contradicting opinions will arise. If contradicting opinions exist and we try to diminish the validity of one opinion solely to validate the merits of another, then ignorance takes hold and prejudice spreads.” Note that discrimination, in the sense of recognizing the distinctions between one thing and another, is not inherently bad in itself, but only becomes harmful if we use our differences to justify an ignorance that demeans the value of opinions we poorly understand.
Third, it fails to acknowledge the feedback loop of tribalistic demonization of an entire dissimilar group, and then the consequent demonization of even the traits of that dissimilar group that causes prejudice to entrench itself. By attempting to eliminate all exposure to a group, the internal tribe removes positive exposure to that group that would challenge and contradict the prejudices they hold and confront them with the burden to change.
And lastly, it fails to acknowledge the existing standards of feminine and masculine traits that were present in Japan that ZUN chose to include and explore in Gensokyo, out of a complete ignorance of historical Japanese culture.
I believe that you have good intentions and genuinely attempt to acknowledge the existence of and refute the justifications of sexism, and thus hold no ill feelings towards you, and in fact welcome your thoughts! There's a sort of underlying dissociation between entertainment media and academia, as there isn't nearly enough discussion on the themes, merits, and influences of pop culture, even though it's such a large part of our lives and by definition, the most popular form of artistic and cultural expression today. But I cannot feel positive about the messages espoused by someone without the intellectual integrity to examine and compensate for their own intrinsic biases when making a statement about gender politics while claiming to be a philosopher. Work towards correcting your biases by expanding your scope, and never stop learning.
Remember that Remilia built a house-rocket and flew it to the moon with only her unshakeable self-efficacy holding it together and then literally powered it on faith and prayers, because the “common sense” frameworks of the modern, westernized outside world that you attempted to enforce upon themes illustrated in Touhou in your limited understanding of cultural context don’t automatically translate to Gensokyo. You can try to adopt the sense of Gensokyo to explore the fantastical wonder within that world, but you absolutely cannot impose your sense upon Gensokyo so as to limit it to the meagre surface banality of your personal world so that you can claim that you have explored it.
Learning and self-improvement is a personal journey different for all. I cannot and will not attempt to dictate the means by which you grow as a person, but I will attempt to give my fellow students a tool for furthering their understanding so that they may meander less and reach further than those who have come slightly before.
The latter half of this essay (which will be posted tomorrow) will examine the expectations for the roles of women in historical Japanese society, particularly around the start of the Meiji Period during which the westernization of Japan began to diminish the hegemony of the “traditional” values that Touhou celebrates and satirizes in equal measure. Understanding the expectations and values that define womanhood allows readers to better identify what qualifies as masculine and feminine motifs in Touhou in the context of the oft-ignored retro eastern perspective that it draws from.

The other day we checked our email to find a very long and fabulous piece of feedback from Jessica and she generously allowed us to share it here on the tumblr.
Hello, guys! :) I've been listening for a while now, but this is my first time commenting or leaving any kind of feedback. I live in work in Japan (in the Tokyo area), so that means long commutes no matter what, but listening to you guys discuss Buffy always makes my morning commute go by so fast. I apologize in advance for this massive e-mail (that is more like an essay). But I just had so much I wanted to say. Please feel free to just skim through it. I sectioned it off to make it easier to do so. Anyway, without further ado…
Mitch and His Amy Love: This week’s episode was a blast to listen to. Mitch’s excitement and joy over the Amy plot line and the Amy Rap were just fantastic, and his happiness was so contagious. I was waiting so long for you guys to get to this episode specifically for Mitch’s reaction, so I was so, so pleased that he was on this week. It should be noted that another one of Mitch’s predictions from way back in Season Four is going to be coming true this season and I can’t wait until you guys get to that episode as well. I remember listening to it back in Season Four and my mind being blown by how accurate it was.
“Restless” Foreshadowing and New Meanings: Speaking of Season Four, while there were some mentions of foreshadowing in “Restless” for events in Season Six (specifically in “Tabula Rasa”), a few were looked over/forgotten:
- In “Restless,” during the same sequence that had the references to Spike in the tweed suit and Giles being Spike’s “father,” there is this exchange:
Xander (to Buffy in the sandbox) : “Gotta keep moving forward.” Buffy: “Like a shark.” Xander; “Like a shark with feet and much less fins.” Spike: “And on land!” Giles (to Spike): “Very good.”
Foreshadowing of the Loan Shark! :D
Many moments and comments from Willow’s dream in “Restless” also take on a double meaning now. Back then it was very easy to relate everything to Willow discovering her sexuality and still trying to build up her confidence. But all the way back in Season 3 we saw Willow relying on magic to try and “fix” unwanted emotions and unpleasant situations. This gets worse in Season 4 with the My Will Be Done spell in “Something Blue” and what makes it worse is the fact that Willow tries to pretend that everything is okay by baking cookies. She knows that what she did was wrong, but she is able to sneak her way out of it. I think by Season 4 Willow was subconsciously aware of the power hunger that resided inside of her, but she still tried to keep up an innocent front. This acting becomes more and more prevalent in Seasons 5 and 6. So the “acting” aspect of Willow’s dream takes on new meanings, as does this line by Buffy (to Willow): “Your costume is perfect.” (Whispers) “Nobody’s gonna know the truth. You know, about you.” There are a few other lines that take on this new double meaning as well.
Also in “Restless” we saw foreshadowing for Giles feelings towards Buffy and his role as a father figure towards her in this season. In the dream, Buffy came off as extremely childish and clinging, with Giles being frustrated by this and Olivia telling him to humor her and such. This shows that Giles was already starting to subconsciously view Buffy as being too dependent on him in a fatherly way (since, in the dream, the dynamic was more like a family at a summer carnival than a Watcher with his Slayer). When Giles enters Spike’s crypt we see Olivia crying in the corner with a baby carriage overturned, which shows that he has given up on/rejected the idea of fatherhood and having a family. He has devoted himself to Buffy and her slayer duties. So, when Buffy dies and that duty ends, I think Giles wanted to find himself again and be a little selfish in that sense. It’s a harsh love, but I think Giles does believe that his leaving is what is best for Buffy right now (and honestly, I agree with him).
Spuffy and Unintentional Foreshadowing…Especially in Season Two: As for the discussion about feeling conflicted over shipping Spuffy because it is very obviously unhealthy, I get that. I ship Spuffy, but the way I see it, as long as you acknowledge and understand the problematic aspects of an unhealthy ship or OTP then there is nothing wrong with that. You can enjoy a ship on a storytelling and/or entertainment level without necessarily viewing it as a “Relationship Goals OTP!”
As for me, personally, I just love the journey that this relationship has gone through thus far. The Spuffy relationship came about very organically in the series. It wasn’t planned from the beginning because, as we know, Spike was planned to be killed off back in “What’s My Line?”, but we still have some amazing unintentional foreshadowing for the pairing:
In “School Hard,” Spike first sees Buffy while she is dancing. James Marsters has stated that he, himself, decided to act out that scene with Spike being attracted to Buffy. That was a personal decision of his. The song that was playing then was “Stupid Thing” by Nickel. It is a song about a dysfunctional/unhealthy relationship with some lines like:
“I did a stupid thing last night, I called you. A moment of weakness. No, not a moment, more like three months of weakness. I’m one step away from falling to my knees. I’m one step away from spilling my guts to you” and “You see, there’s this huge chunk of me missing. It’s gone. And I can’t feel it, I can’t feel it, I can’t feel” and “I called you. It’s the last time, and maybe tomorrow night, will be the last time…”
This song really reflects the type of unhealthy relationship that Buffy and Spike are spiraling into right now.
Also in “School Hard” when Buffy and Spike get ready to fight each other for the first time, they have this exchange:
Spike: “[…] I’ll make it quick. It won’t hurt a bit.”         Buffy: “No, Spike. It’s gonna hurt a lot.”
This was meant to be in reference to their fight, but also had a very obvious second meaning of a sexual nature. It is in “School Hard” that we first start seeing the theme of Buffy’s sexual maturity that spans throughout the rest of Season Two. Concerning the quote above, Buffy ends up being right. Their first time together in “Smashed” ends up being very violent and Buffy using Spike is something painful both for her and Spike on an emotional level.
    - In Innocence Angelus tells Spike “To kill this girl…you have to love her,” a statement that I imagine probably haunted Spike during the time period that Buffy was dead. It likely added onto his survivor’s guilt.
    - In Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered we get this exchange between Angelus and Spike (about Buffy) :
Spike: “Why don’t you rip her lungs out? It might make an impression.”         Angelus: “Lacks…poetry.”         Spike: “It doesn’t have to. What rhymes with lungs?”
That last bit ends up being called back in Fool for Love where we see William asking, “What’s another word for ‘gleaming’? It’s a perfectly perfect word as many words go, but nothing rhymes, you see.” It also ties in with “Rest in Peace,” where Spike uses a ton of corny rhymes that just make me enjoy the song even more. So there is this added layer of cohesiveness to Spike’s history and backstory, even without his character having been planned for the long run so early on.
    - In Becoming Part Two when Buffy states that she is in a band, Spike states that Buffy plays the triangle, while Buffy says that she plays the drums. He corrects himself to try to keep up the (pathetic) lie and then answers that he sings. Once Spike falls in love with Buffy, we see that he ends up marching to the beat of Buffy’s drum. We also see that they ended up fighting together extremely well in Becoming Part Two. They communicated nothing verbally to each other when that vamp attacked Joyce, yet they moved perfectly together as a unit and got rid of it quickly. The little conversation that they have is about the vamp afterwards, is a very quick back and forth that shows that their thoughts are on the same wavelength.
    - In Lovers Walk Buffy and Spike end up falling right back into that banter that we saw glimmers of back in Season 2, and we see that Buffy was able to read Spike pretty well with her line that he likely had Willow and Xander at the old factory, which he did. Spike was able to read Buffy very well here too, as Buffy notes when she states that she can’t lie to herself anymore “Or Spike, for some reason,” about her change in relationship status with Angel.
    - Then in Season 4 we see a ton of UST between the two: Buffy teasing Spike with her neck in Something Blue, the fact that Willow states that Buffy and Spike should just get married, but make absolutely no mention of them needing to fall in love or make out. And this is also when we start to see Spike subconsciously acknowledging aspects of Buffy that he finds attractive, specifically her hair. He calls her Goldilocks in one episode and is shown touching her hair once or twice throughout the season (one time in Superstar). Buffy also says this to Willow in Season 4 “But I can't help thinking, isn't that where the fire comes from? Can a nice, safe relationship be that intense? I know it's nuts, but part of me believes that real love and passion have to go hand in hand with pain and fighting. (Stakes a vampire) I wonder where I get that from?” – something which is certainly present in her and Spike’s current relationship and which mirrors Spike’s own take on relationships in his Love’s Bitch speech.
    - When Season 5 rolls around the subtext starts becoming text when Spike realizes he is in love with Buffy. A lot of the elements from the earlier seasons carry over (they still fight well together, Spike is falling in line to the beat of Buffy’s drum, etc.) but now we have the romantic feelings in the forefront. We learn in this season that violence for Spike is similar to “third base,” thus showing that he also enjoys violence in his romantic and sexual experiences, something which was hinted at with his relationship with Drusilla. We see Spike starting to figure out what true love is all about and we see Buffy starting to notice his changing and starting to trust him in this season. In The Gift, the last time Buffy and Spike talk, she is ascending the stairs and looks down on him as he speaks. She is ascending to her room on a physical level, but on a symbolic level it can be seen that she is ascending to heaven/a heavenly dimension. In After Life, the first time Buffy and Spike speak to each other post-resurrection, the conversation doesn’t start until Buffy has fully descended the stairs and is on level ground with Spike. She has returned back to earth, which in this case, can be viewed as a hell dimension. This shows that now sees herself on the same level as Spike, which is something we are seeing pop up in this relationship. Also, that parallel and symbolism was not spotted by me, but rather someone on Tumblr (as were many of the Season 2 moments of foreshadowing).
We have been told and now are being shown the violence that both Buffy and Spike associate with love and sex. It definitely is a kink of theirs, but it squarely falls into abuse rather than a healthy BDSM relationship because we aren’t shown Buffy and Spike communicating at all with each other before engaging in violent sexual acts, which is a big “no-no” in these types of relationships.
Buffy and Spike’s relationship is certainly problematic and unhealthy – even downright abusive, but it is also extremely compelling storytelling. Their relationship has been a slow burn, which I personally like over instant/love at first sight type of romances, and we are being shown their relationship changes, rather than being told it. I personally could never get into the Bangel relationship because I felt that we were just being told of their relationship changes, rather than seeing these changes. It left me confused and disconnected whenever Buffy and Angel said they loved each other, because I just never saw the “falling in love” part happen. With Spuffy there has always been a constant forward movement and a constant change that I could see unfolding and that just appeals to me more.
Willow and Tara and Engaging in Sex After the Mind-Wipe: Trying to ship an unproblematic relationship in Buffy (BTVS specifically, not necessarily in the Buffyverse as a whole) is pretty much impossible to do anyway. All the major relationships in the series have some unhealthy or problematic aspect to them. Right now, Willow and Tara’s relationship is toxic and abusive. Willow was gaslighting Tara and we also had Willow engaging in sex with Tara after using magic to erase Tara’s memory of the fight that they were still kinda in the middle of. There is some debate within the fandom if that can be viewed as not only a mind rape, but also physical rape.
Personally, I view it as such, seeing it as similar to someone purposefully giving someone else alcohol or a drug of some kind and then engaging in sex. Rape is about power and control, after all, and in that moment Willow was taking control over Tara in the sense that she was wiping away a memory that, if it had not been erased, would have resulted in absolutely no sex. By wiping Tara’s memory, Willow is making Tara more compliant and willing, and that definitely feels like a form of rape to me. Some fans view it as more like sexual assault or dubious consent and still others see nothing wrong with the situation (since Willow didn’t have the specific intent to engage in sex with Tara after wiping her memory). What do you guys think?
BTVS Characters and Hogwarts Houses: Moving away from such a heavy, heavy topic as that though (and wanting to end this massive essay on a lighter note), let’s talk about the BTVS characters and Hogwarts Houses! In the Rewatchable episode for Smashed the hosts discussed what Hogwarts House each of the ATS characters would be in. I want to do that for BTVS now (Angel, Cordelia, and Wesley were already done, so I won’t include them here, but I will include Oz). For me:
    Gryffindor: Buffy and Spike
    Ravenclaw: Giles and Dawn
Hufflepuff: Oz, Tara, and Xander (Gryffindor could be argued for Xander, some may argue Ravenclaw for Oz)
Slytherin: Anya and Willow (Arguments could be made for Ravenclaw for Willow)
I based their houses off of what the characters are shown to value as well as what their behaviors reflect. A lot of fans will put Spike in Slytherin, but I feel they do that because of the whole false dichotomy that Slytherin = evil/bad/morally ambiguous characters (and many fans will put all of the Scoobies in Gryffindor automatically because of the false dichotomy that Gryffindor = good/morally righteous and sound characters). Really, Spike doesn’t value ambition or power. He likes women who are physically powerful (but not power itself, he is fine with handing that over to people that he respects, especially in combat) and he does wish to prove himself, but the way he goes about it shows that he values courage over either power or ambition. He tries to prove himself through risk taking. He is a thrill seeker who is an open book and wears his heart on his sleeve. Nothing about him really conveys Slytherin in that sense. I can see Spike being a Hufflepuff or even a Ravenclaw over a Slytherin.
As for Xander, he certainly wasn’t loyal to Cordelia when he cheated on her with Willow, but he demonstrates his love for loyalty when it comes to his friends over all, which works as a double-edged sword for his character in some ways. And while he wasn’t hard working in high school, he does value hard work once he finds a job that fits him and he values it when he sees it in others.
I placed Willow in Slytherin rather than Ravenclaw because I always viewed her desire to learn and master things coming from the power trip that comes with it. She values the ambition behind learning and having knowledge, rather than the things being learned and the knowledge itself, this is what makes her differ from Giles, who gets genuinely excited to simply learn new things. Giles is more of the stereotypical Ravenclaw, the one that fans tend to think of first and foremost. Dawn is definitely more of the Luna Lovegood weird type of Ravenclaw though. She has been shown to be naturally curious about things and will take initiative to learn about things that interest her. She is also very experimental…at least with her food, haha.
I feel like Buffy, Tara, Oz, and Anya’s placements are all pretty self-explanatory and probably wouldn’t be viewed as overly debatable.
Ending Notes: If you made it all the way through this e-mail, then I congratulate you! This turned out way more massive than I had planned, but I just feel like there is so much that can be talked about and discussed in the later seasons of Buffy. I’m a big fan of Seasons 4-7 (as well as the comics…for the most part, some comic seasons I view more favorably than others), so I am happy to see that the newbies have been enjoying Season 6 so far.
Thank you so much for this, Jessica!  You’ve made a lot of interesting points here and I see this sparking quite a bit of debate in the future - and I’m not just talking about Hogwarts Houses ;) Seriously, your points about Spike and Buffy’s slow burn came as a very nice reminder to this superfan, as I keep forgetting that like Darla, Spike wasn’t actually meant to stick around. Disagree on Giles leaving being a good thing, but I dig your style. Now, I think this is long enough without me writing a response, but really. This was amazing.
If you feel the same urge to write, email us and be sure to keep it spoiler free like Jessica did so that our newbies both on and off the podcast can enjoy what you have to share!

Bad Questions, Good Answers
Author note: If anyone has any ideas to make this go further message me.
Warning: Language one bad word near the end.
PS: Message me if you want this as a series.
Today is the first day of the week press release for Avengers: Infinity War. Tilly Hawthorne, actress and the woman responsible for some interesting characters has been casted as Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk. During the filming of Infinity War part 1 she was also in post-production for She-Hulk television show for Netflix. This week of interviews is press for both events so it is vital that this goes well. Her personal assistant, A meets her in the green room with a cup of Earl Grey and a smuggled out of London packet of raspberry Jammie Dodgers.
“Today’s the day. Excited or nervous.” A asks handing over the mug.
 “A little bit of both.”
“You shouldn’t be. You’re smart, funny, also you have the biggest dimples in the world just flash those things with a smile and you’ll be fine.”
“I’ve read over the folder of everything I can’t say about five times just so I don’t let anything slip.”
“That’s good, besides this will be easy. Mark and Robert will be with you the whole week.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea? I honestly don’t know how the film was even finished with the three of us mucking about.”
“But it was finished, and now you can relax.” A picks up the coat Tilly had set on the table beside her and hung it on the back of the chair.
“I’m stupidly early, aren’t I?” Tilly smoothed over the collar of her shirt.
“A little but the boys are on their way and the interview room is getting set up.” A sits off to the side.
“Good.” Tilly sinks into a beanbag checking her phone.
A text from Tom reads: I love you, and miss you. Even if it’s only been a few days. Have fun with the press.
*Time skip to the first interview of the day. *
“I’m Sarah from Cinemazone, and today we have Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and Tabitha Hawthorne.”
“Um, it’s Tilly.” Tilly softly corrects.
“Right right, sorry. So, my first questions are actually for Tilly, since she’s new.” Sarah begins the interview
“Save the best for last.” Robert smirks.
“Anyway, I’ve been following you and your films since you first started and you were wonderful in Tentative Secret. I was wondering if it was difficult to read from an action film script.”
“I don’t think so from a storytelling experience no, but filming this was different than any movie I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of. In my opinion it’s all about the scripts and the talent behind the scenes that makes it worth watching.”  Tilly answers to the best of her ability.
Remember what Tom said simple and to the point.
“You’ve also been a fashion icon for plenty of women everywhere. I was just wondering when are you going to go put your hair back the way it was before all of this. It was much pretty red and long than purple and short. And I see you’re wearing heels that’s an interesting choice for a giant such as yourself.”
“I cut it short to donate and then dyed it because in Infinity Wars and in the She-Hulk show I wear a wig. It’s just me playing around with my hair. I thought I’d step out of my box. Nothing permanent, and as for my heels, I like wearing them.” She cringes a little because of the judgement of the question.
Why should I look a certain way?
“Oh, alright. Now here’s the real meat of this interview. Are you jealous that the other female cast members have worked with the hot male cast members more than you?”
“Oh no, I can’t complain. My scenes are mostly with these two stud muffins.” Tilly smirks wrapping her arms around Mark and Robert.
For Mark and Robert, the same old questions came up again. Mark and his activism, Robert, and his onset hijinks. Tilly watches as the men divulge their stories. In all honest she picked the two of them early on to be her mentors. She wants her influents to mean something as well as be entertaining to other cast members and crew.
This interview ends and ten minutes in between them to set up for the next seem to go by so fast.
“Hello I’m Aaron from CinemaCove and I’m here with Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and new comer Tilly Hawthorne.” The interviewer says.
At least he knows the names of who he’s interviewing.
“How does it feel to have gone from low ranking no name actress to so well known in a few days?”  Aaron asks.
“Um well I haven’t really thought about it until asked. I thought I was doing well with my Romance films. I personally like the Italian one The Sonata from The Bride.” Tilly answers while thinking Do this many people hate me in real life.
“Speaking of new fame, has it been an issue to read alongside more experienced actors like the man to your left. “Aaron gestures to Robert.
“Well yes in a way. You want to, as a new comer, impress veterans but I think as long as that’s not hindering your performance it’s a good thing.”
“She’s better than I was, when I started. “Robert says trying to take the sting out of the insult.
“I don’t think it’s fair to her acting abilities to compare it to another’s. Robert’s never been a leading lady in a Period romantic.” Mark adds.
“Or worn a 18th century inspired corset.” Tilly adds.
“My next question In the films, your character has undergone vast changes to her physical form and appearance. Do you feel that this lessens the character for the viewers because she no longer looks like the character they love?” He asks.
“Well maybe that’s a very superficial way of looking at it. I like the character because even if she’s green and not really of human descent she still has her humanity. I find that to be interesting because of the way the Hulk and the She-hulk were made. Mark correct me if I’m wrong but the Hulk was made after a botched attempt at a serum to turn men into weapons. Bruce tested it on himself and became a weapon. She-Hulk was made by Bruce performing a blood transfusion with her. I think any kind of act like that is one of heroism, and from that act birthed a hero. So basically, what I’m getting at is don’t watch the film superficially, watch it for the story and characters.” Tilly takes a sip of her tea after the long-winded answer.
“When can we expect you to return to the rom-com genre? Your performances there were stunning there and there isn't much future in action films. “Aaron asks.
“I think I’m going to answer that with a quote from one of my favorite films, I think I can tell the wrong sort for myself, thanks.” Tilly says quoting Harry Potter.
“Did you do your own makeup for the film? “Aaron asked curiously staring at her lipstick.
“No, a lot of it was CGI like Mark’s are, but I tend to do my own makeup for these appearances. The emerald lipstick is well a reference to She-Hulk.” Tilly smiles showing off the shimmer of the lipstick and contrast of the emerald to her teeth. One of her best kept makeup secrets is that emerald lipstick makes your teeth appear whiter.
"Are u surprised a woman of your figure got the role, compared to Scarlett Johansson"
“I think Scarlett is a lovely woman, and putting women against each other is a cheap move at toxic journalism.” Tilly answers while thinking That came out of his face hole. He wrote down that.
Robert had to hold Mark back from further reacting to the “figure” question. He could tell she was hurt by his question.
“Because you have so much screen time in this movie, is there any kind of rivalry between other female cast members?”
“No, I wouldn’t say animosity. Scarlett did jump into my arms once, like full on bridal carrying, and we ran off the back lot to get cheeseburgers. That was fun. I also bench pressed Lizzie, she was terrified I would drop her, I didn’t but the Russo brothers did say I wasn’t allowed to pick anyone else up.” Tilly laughs.
“And then she picked Anthony up.” Robert adds. “Joe wouldn’t get near her after that.”
“I remember they were directing her from like ten feet away just in case she got any wild ideas.” Mark adds.
That interview ends and A looks over to Tilly and mouths “ I’m sorry.”
“I’m John from Movie Central and I’m here today with Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and Tilly Hawthorne.”  he begins cheerfully.
“Who's the biggest flirt on set? Anybody try and get in your pants?” he asks.
“Oh, no one.” Tilly shakes her head. Surely people know about Tom and I.
“Has your lack of love life affected your acting?”
“Um, I do have a boyfriend but we don’t really want all that attention.” Tilly answers. Maybe they don’t know that much about Tom and I.
"Does having so many male actors on set distract you from acting?"
“Nope, they are just people.” Tilly gives a fake smile then thinks Why are my questions so shitty?
“Were the action scenes exhausting for you because of your little experience in the action genre?
“I think anyone regardless of acting experiences would be exhausting. But my experience was bouncing around in grey pajamas with Mark so I was tired but it was so fun.” She answers already bored with the interview.
 “Have you considered voice acting?”
“Is that an insult or a real question, because I know my mug isn’t perfect but I thought I was at least a 6.” Tilly tries to bite her tongue to not saying anything rude back.
Mark’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as the interviewer started to laugh at her answer.
“Don’t listen to him, you’re an eleven.” Robert pats her shoulder as the interviewer leaves.
The second to last interviewer walks in, takes a seat, and gets the intro over within a matter of seconds.
“How much weight did you have to lose for this role?” He asks.
“Um that’s a rude question but I did lose some when toning my muscles but if you’ve ever seen a comic with Jennifer Walters or She-Hulk she is quite curvy.” Tilly answers slowly. Come on Tilly Thick skin remember.
“What is your workout routine yet? Do you have any weight loss tips for our readers/watchers?”
“Muscle toning, and yoga, lots of stretching personally because I get leg cramps easy since they are kind of long.” She answers watching the guy look her up and down stopping at her legs.
 Damn this pinstriped skirt.
“Do you think the reason she-hulk was only just brought into the marvel cinematic universe is because she is definitely no one's favorite?”
“Woah woah woah, sorry to interrupt but, they’re plenty of people wanting to see She-Hulk on the screen.” Mark says before Tilly can open her mouth. “And I couldn’t think of any other person I’d want to play my on-screen cousin.” He puts an arm around her shoulder silently thinking “This woman has the patience of a saint.”
“Speaking of casting choices, I heard Mila Kunis passed on this role before it was offered to you; how does it feel to be their second choice?”
“I’m uh...thankful that I’m here.” Tilly hesitates trying not to let this get to her.
How can someone have four terrible interviews in one day.
“We're you surprised when you' were selected for such an amazing role”
“I was hesitant to take the role, because of the well horse power behind it so to speak, the big contract can be terrifying for an actress.”
“Why did they let you stay so bulky for this role instead of thinning you down?”
“Um, well I think if She-Hulk is involved it’s more about the inside, as cliché as it sounds.”
“She didn’t come in today so you could bully her.” Mark sternly makes it known.
Although Tilly hasn’t been in the Marvel family for long the first person she opened up to was Mark. He felt responsible for her taking the part as well since he was the one to call and persuade her to take it.
The interview smiles and goes to Mark “Of course not , but are you concerned that as your body isn't perfect shape that girls won't look up to you as girls need to have perfect body shapes?”
“I’m not dignifying that with a response.” Tilly says sipping her tea.
Mark and Robert are shocked that this man would ask her these questions.
“I do have one last question.” He says.
“Thank the lord above.” Tilly mutters.
“How did u make up for the lack of on screen chemistry with all of the male characters on the screen? “
“I disagree with that. I think there was chemistry. Not romantic but familial love chemistry between Bruce Banner and his cousin Jennifer. They were raised together, so their relationship when they were younger was more of a sibling's bond but after Bruce left they hadn’t seen eachother since they were kids. The scene where Bruce and Jennifer meet back up is straight ripped from the comics which was one of my favorite scenes filming.” Tilly answers.
Once the interviewer leaves Tilly looks over at A who mouths “You have one more, you can do this.”
“I’m Dylan from Cinema Typhoon and here I’m catching up with Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and Tilda Hawthorne.” He begins.
A few minuets later after asking Mark and Robert questions he looks towards Tilly.
“Your makeup now, did you do this by yourself. I mean why the green. It looks awful.” He laughs.
“I think this lipstick is very pretty and will continue to wear it for the rest of the junket.” Tilly says trying not to lose it.
“Does knowing she-hulk will never be as good as the hulk put you off acting and want to not be in the franchise?” Dylan gets back to interviewing.
“Don’t answer that Tilly.” Mark says then adds “This whole day she’s been picked apart by the press like vultures, all because she wants to entertain people. Do you find what’s wrong in that?”
“She choose to go into show business, speaking of that. You've gained a considerable amount of weight in the past couple of months. Is there a baby Hiddleston on the way?”
Tilly opened that closed her mouth like a fish. She finally shook her head, trying not to tear up, or stop her face from turning red.
“How many more questions do you have left?” Robert asks as Mark has his hand on Tilly’s shoulder and whispers to her “Are you alright.”
 “A few.” Dylan answers.
“Make them quick.” Robert says near snarling. No one messes with newbie on his watch.
Tilly answers to Mark “I don’t know.”
How do you think you measure up to Tom’s past girlfriends? Dylan asks.
“I don’t measure up to any other women. Tom and I are happy together.” Tilly says trying to will the tears to not come down yet.
“So, that means he isn’t dating Taylor Swift.” Dylan sounds disappointed.
That’s it. I’m going to explode.
“No, he isn’t. He hasn’t dated her since last July.” Tom and I have been together for six months, anything else.” Tilly says letting a little venom fall off her lips.
“Do you feel like you're not good enough for Tom after looking at girls he has dated in the past?”
“That’s it!” Tilly stood up grabbing her coat.
“Where are, you going, the interview isn’t over.” Dylan asks using his hands for emphasis.
“You’re a CUNT!” Tilly yells in the Dylan’s face. “Good Day!”
Tilly slams the door nearly hitting Arely, her assistant, also known as A.
“Arely, I can’t go back in there.” She says going into the women’s restroom near the sinks.
“And you don’t have to, but I will. I had to sit by as five people cut you down and that’s not right. As your friend and assistant, I’m going to give them a piece of my mind.” Arely says grabbing a paper towel and handing it over.
“Is anything they said true?” Tilly asks A.
“No honey it’s not. You know as well as I do that Tom loves you. You’re smart, funny, heart of gold and now I know the patience of a saint. I don’t understand how you didn’t punch them in the throat.” Arely wipes off her face. “Well at least we know your lipstick is smudge proof. None of it has come off so far.”
“What do I do? Does Luke need to know about the bad press? Can I call Tom? Would it be distracting to his press tour?” Tilly asks all in guttural mumbles as she calms down.
“You call Tom. I’ll tell Luke.” Arely plans as she leaves Tilly in the women’s restroom.
Opening the door, she smacks into Mark and Robert waiting outside.
 “Is she okay?” Mark asks.
 “She will be.” A answers.
“Wonder if she should cancel for tomorrow.” Robert asks making the two, Arely and Mark turn around.
“She’d hate that. Tilly would be more upset, that her emotions got the better of her.” Arely answers.
“She’s not going through that again.” Mark says.
“Is there anything we can do?” Robert asks.
“Yes, don’t talk about what just happened ever again.” Arely answers before heading back to the interview room followed by Mark and Robert.
“Why are you two following me?” Arely asks turning around.
“We want to watch the show.” Robert says.
“And make sure you don’t kill him or anything.” Mark adds.
“Fine you two can come.” Arely opens the door to the interview room.

Audience Studies 3P18 Blog #2
Week 7
For this weeks blog we were assigned from the textbook chapter 6 “Interpreting and Decoding Mass Media Text.” Along with the chapter we had to read Steven Granelli and Jason Zenor article that relates to the weeks concept.  The main concept of the chapter in my mind was the significance sings have to society and how we interrupt them based on our beliefs and thoughts. In the chapter they talk about most texts being polysemic, which is where things can be understood in different ways by people because of there approach to that text with past signs and experiences. The chapter gave me three options people take when they are interrupting a text, they either have a dominant-hegemonic position, which is where they accept the text and perceive it as it was intended to, there is negotiated position, where we the audience might have mixed opinions and think about the text in a different way, finally oppositional position where they completely disagree with the text by focusing exclusively on the connotative meaning of the signs. I my mind most people do take a middle ground with texts and that’s only fair because you don’t know what they have witnessed or done they could have changed their perception. An example I have in my life would come in the form of my tattoos. I have them on my chest and arm, its been in my experience that most people around my age like them. All of my tattoos have stories behind them and I enjoy when people ask about them, because the meanings they have are very deep and interesting to me and the fact that I got to turn them into art on my body is very cool to me. Then there is the generation of my parents where the image of having tattoos is bad and straight away looked as a negative and disgraceful to my body. They don’t even know the meaning behind my tattoos and before I even get a chance to tell them they already look at me differently. This I can relate to the concept of Oppositional position. Just because they are from a different time they still view this type of culture as negative, whereas my generation looks at it more softly in a way, and that it is art and expression. They decode me have this on me and judge before they know the whole back story.
Week 7 reading
This weeks reading was an interesting one because to help them explain there findings they used to the text “Dexter,” and how people view that show to prove their theories. I have seen Dexter and was a regular watcher of the show when it was one the network of showtime, and I always though it was odd to want to watch a show about killing and low cunning. The article goes on to examine how audience view this bizarre show and how they offer unique implications for the field of entertainment. The show is about a serial killer that only kills bad people that escape justice. This is interesting best what he is doing is bad , but also good in a way. This gets the audience thinking and the study asks them based on this situation do you agree with the actions. Two theorist that I want to quote is Haidt and Joseph (2007), because they came up with the finding that there are five universal moral dominants. They found that there are ” harm/care, fairness/reciprocity, liberty/oppression,  authority/subversion, and purity/sanctity”( Granelli and Zenor, 5056–5078). All of these can be applied to all cultures around the world and I found that quite interesting. Even though people are raised differently and have different experiences they seem in some way to have similar moral codes. I believe this to be because people are naturally good inside and people are brought up to act good and be kind so that’s why I think we see this in all cultures around the world. An example of this from my life is donating during the festive season. People tend to donate more during the holidays and so do I because there is just that feeing of happiness and comfort in the air. So morally we do this action because we know that it does good for everyone that is on the receiving end of this action. Plus similar to Dexter but in the opposite way, it is looked at as morally correct. That when you have something to giver that brings positively to someone else it feels correct to do so.

The top 5 baseball movies of all time, once and for all
yahoo
Like sports themselves, sports movies are a turf ripe for debate.
And baseball is where that’s most true. Among the various sports out there, baseball movies are the New York Yankees — which is to say there’s been an embarrassment of riches over the years. But which is the best baseball movie? Which others are in the top 5?
[Now’s the time to sign up for Fantasy Football! Join for free]
Those topics have been debated for some time, but this week in my Open Mike video series, I’m here to give you the best list you’ve ever seen of the Top 5 baseball movies. You might want to debate me on this, and that’s all well and good, but at this point in my life, after numerous watchings of all the most important baseball movies — I’ve even seen “Major League 2” more times than I’m proud of — I’ve arrived at this list.
Tumblr media
What’s the best baseball movie? Bull Durham? Sandlot? Major League? (Special to Yahoo Sports)
5. “ROOKIE OF THE YEAR” I know some people don’t like the comic book-y plot, but it ended with a Chicago Cubs World Series win — so it’s OK to suspend belief every now and again. The fact that you still see Henry Rowengartner jerseys at Wrigley Field is proof of how much this one still resonates with people.
4. “THE NATURAL” I’ll give “The Natural” this, it probably has the best baseball-movie homer. As you’ll see in this list, I prefer fun baseball movies over the more serious, dramatic movies. But even I can’t deny the greatness of Roy Hobbs.
3. “BULL DURHAM” This is Kevin Costner’s best baseball movie — more on that in the video — and a wonderful glimpse into both the clubhouse culture in baseball and the shenanigans that happen in the minor leagues. It preceded the baseball-movie boom of the ’90s, which is a good reminder that “Bull Durham” wasn’t just trying to ride a wave.
2. “THE SANDLOT” If you insist on Benny the Jet, Smalls, Ham Porter and crew being No. 1, I wouldn’t hate you. I wouldn’t agree, but I wouldn’t hate you. “The Sandlot” is the perfect marriage of coming-of-age summer flick with baseball nostalgia, and it hits every note correctly. And without it, the lexicon of baseball quotes wouldn’t be as great.
1. “MAJOR LEAGUE” There’s only one correct answer in my book and it’s “Major League” — a great baseball movie and just an all-around entertaining flick. I’ve seen it at least 100 times and I’ll still watch it when it’s on TV, still laugh and still imagine those fictional Indians were real. Jobu forever!
As I talk about in the video, there’s one movie conspicuously absent from my Top 5. I expect to hear about it from angry readers/watchers. So have it.
Previously on Open Mike: – No, the Yankees aren’t the Golden State Warriors of baseball – Why this year’s Hall of Fame class represents change for Cooperstown – Five teams that could create trade-deadline chaos
