First experience with an Indian Restaurant.
I went to Basingstoke for the weekend to visit a friend for their wedding, the wedding was Indian and my friend showed me the beautiful red dress she was going to wear for her wedding and I was in love, however as you can imagine from someone who has only seen white dresses as a norm while growing up, it is hard to imagine a bride in red. However, I decided to Google Indian Brides and that helped a lot, it actually put a smile on my face to see such beautiful royal looking women, it actually made me curious to other cultures and I ended up going down a rabbit hole of googling Different country brides from Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Japan, Korean and Pakistan to Bangladesh, China and Turkey. It was actually very fun. Next my friend wanted me to get acquainted with the Indian Cuisine, so my next google search was for an Indian Restaurant near me. I’m from Mexican heritage so I can handle my spices, hence I loved all the Indian food, it was actually brilliant.
The food at the restaurant near me, Spicy Tadka, reminded me of Mexican food too because the flat bread called “Roti” which seems to be like a Tortilla. The Roti seems to be very universal, as it is not only consumed in Asian countries but also parts of Africa. The flatbread in India is kind of a funny subject as my friend explained to me. India has this thing about girls only being the perfect bride if they can make a “Gol Roti” which is a round Flatbread, by hand. It is similar to the Domestic bliss and Pin-up jokes for us, they make fun of it all the time.
In the 5 km radius this was the top restaurant to the search “Indian Restaurant near me” and it proved its worth through the food. We had one vegetarian, one vegan Indian, one Mexican (me), two Muslims and three European (They cannot handle spice, it’s not even a stereotype at this point). The restaurant had something for everyone, they had vegan, vegetarian, meat, Halal and non-spicy choices and everyone enjoyed the food quite incredibly. Of course, it did take a while for the service but we chalked that up to the number of people and the big order.
The food was absolutely brilliant because I ate what everyone ate, it was so good. My Pakistani friend and Indian friend started to tell me about “Desi” stereotypes, “Desi” is the word that Indians, Pakistani, Bangladeshis and others use to describe themselves, native objects and things. Basically the word can be used with objects as well as habits while connecting the object and habit to something that I a norm for people from the heritage and areas. They told us that most of the inside jokes are the same and they are sometimes a little bit racist but never serious, like they inherently call White people “Gora” which means white and Black people “Kala” which means black, however for them it’s not racist until it’s translated into English because they think of it as a fact and not a degradation of any kind. The conversation god deep, funny, kooky and weird as we finished our meal and I didn’t even notice but I had finished every single bite on my plate which is not something I do normally.
