First Blog Post 3/20/20
Started CnD Records today. Feels Good.
Working on some diss tracks. Not sure if they see it coming - doesn’t matter either way.
Planning to release Car and Driver first real record this Friday 3/20/20. Driving Test Driver Fest 1.
Self release first record - another 20 tracks next week. Compile top 10 - 15 for first release with other label - thinking Terrible, Kranky, blu ish label or Thrill Jockey. Citrus City a no-go for now. Maybe just keep building CnD records.
Be the middle man - take advantage of opportunities without sacrificing my bands’ (and those I represent) integrity.
Reach sleep destroyer.
Last night at Ted’s - great DJ set. Kidz bop remixes, Fancy. Crowd hated it. Ted disappointed we had to leave but it’s ok with everyone. Tall guy took aux right out of computer, have video. Started dancing - cucked everyone. Everyone thinks they’re the crazy charismatic guy. Am I actually? I think so. Syd thinks so.
CnD Fest 2 , 3 , 4 at Purchase and beyond. Would like to play apartments, Scully’s den in BK (reach out) and Philly, DC etc.
Next voice memo album - 20 - 25 tracks right now. Better than the first. Danny said best album ever.
Working on “My oh Maia Reason Why” video - my favorite video I’ve ever seen. Getting good feedback.
Important to collab with certain SUNY people before I go:
Members of Lip Critic, Dawson, Neal, Gabe.
Send stuff back and forth with Joseph Kress.
Need to write song about not sharing a stage w unstable Car and Driver - cost me 2 gigs. Ok because I had the police interaction that night.
Things have been working out quite well. Syd is keeping me in check. Main priorities are keep the energy going while I can and make sure everyone around me is comfortable with me doing my thing, specifically mom, sofia.
Going to Only Angels tomorrow to collab with Alex.
Tues/Wed in RI with Zach Gorton. Need to see Nick Holcomb, Sofia, Will Orchard if he’s around. Riley in Boston? Would love to.
Visit Dad soon on the way to Richmond, in a few weeks perhaps. Grandma Roberta etc. They have a BBQ place now - I bet it’s great.
Follow up in the morning (3 hours from now) with wedding band, Kevin Daniels, drummer etc.
Film sunrise sessions at Purchase: My Ride’s Here, Splendid Isolation, Keep me in your heart, Studebaker, Cat’s in the Cradle, Everybody that you know. Don’t think twice, Boots of Spanish Leather, Someday my Prince, Teenage Dirtbag, Arthur (Woof Woof), Forget You, Signed Sealed Delivered, Superstition, The Promise, Hold me now (TT), Love on Top, Townes Van Zandt, 1-800 superstar, Evan Wright, Tom Petty, Blinded By the Light, Searching for a Heart, Mag Field’s, Barenaked Ladies, TMBG, Dolly Parton one sided love, Byrds, Beatles, Kinks, Stones, Parquet Courts, T Swift (Red, Way I loved you), Mitski, Sasami, Anything Could Happen, Beach House, He Needs Me, These Days, YLT, Beach Boys, Big Star Take Care, G500/Luna, Felt, Psychic TV, Shelia, BJM, Yellow Sarong, Over and Over, Hazel St, Heatherwood, Helicopter, He Would’ve Laughted, I wanna be your lover, The pump, Good enough (sleep destroyer), Them airs, BH (14, indian summer), help me scrape mucus off my brain), Beach Comber, DO YOUR THING, Icehead, Bobby, 1000 times, WIll Orchard, Bon Iver, MGMT, Tame impala, Instant Crush, etc. Art Vandelay, Quick Canal, Stereolab, Grouper, Broadcast, Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Bachelor Kisses, Cranberries, Cure, Pastels, MBV, I found a reason, pale blue eyes, Deerhoof, Gretel Alex G, Dancing w tears in my eyes, Elvis Costello, No age(things i did), Are ya ok, Maus, Ariel, R Stevie, Aphex Twin, Zomes, Vampire Weekend etc.
Bring Laptop for Beats on some and lyrics for all.
Love life more than ever before. Music feels so good. Want to help, make amends, everything that moondog did. Don’t be homeless much longer.
Not sure if I like throbbing gristle - definitely like Psychic TV.
How savage should diss tracks be? Very? Match the severity of the person’s treatment of me/others. Aka - pretty bad for all except for Auto.
Listened to new Kanye today - 10x better and more influential than death grips.
Realized today that i’ve spent my whole life wishing I was Kanye and now I am Kanye. Feels very good.
Everyone is gifted but internet makes us angst.
I am mostly Camus right now - maybe more Kierkegaard soon. Religion and Terrence Malik. Still need to read books.
Order of Books: The graduate Portrait of the artist Consider Lobster Infinite Jest Pynchon Ulysses (At recommendation of American gamer association)
Syd is incredibly gifted. Want to help her feel comfortable doing art/work here in the chaos but also sort out the chaos for both of ours’ sake. I thrive in it, she tolerates well. Want to move to Riverdale still, maybe East Williamsburg with Backpack Chris. We’ll see about money. Philly perhaps, little too far. Jersey is good location but bad commute. Bad to RI.
Visit RI and Boston Tues - Thurs. Sell Cigarettes at Concerts. Feels right.
Keep smoking for now - quit end of summer perhaps.
Don’t have Corona Virus - glad we are not quarantined. Still be smart. Don’t expose mom regardless. Protect at ALL costs.
Really though, why does Journee hate me? Write new track (Journee into forever nevermore not now not ever (Lou)) or Journee into SJW self righteous moral posturing (way too savage - maybe voice memo outro)
AR Kane album is incredible. Syd loves too. Sample everything.
Crazy - sound better at jazz than ever in my life. Exploring harmony - never practice. Teach free lessons all the time. Love the diminished scale. Might be best jazz guitarist to ever live. Time will tell. Would be cool long term. Prefer singing.
Getting good at piano too.
I’m my favorite lyricist/comedian/actor.
Is maia right, acting isn’t hard? Weird they can’t act.
^Remember to delete^
Don’t share this on Facebook yet.
Why does Journee hate me so much? Just the Louis CK joke?
People who stay home and do nothing hate to see irreverent people doing things.
People like when you’re losing - don’t like to see you win.
^That makes me sound crazy.
F00D outsider might make me famous first.
Need to keep up with legal situation.
Hope mom and dad both live long. Call Syd, get something nice for everyone in family. Get weird jewel cases. Order jewelry from etsy. Post merch on bandcamp.
Finish album art soon. Music videos. Get better at animation etc. Pay Ben for his poster. Actually really good. Maybe album art? Duo album! Record in Wisconsin, release under his name. WIll success be good for Ben? I think so. Still can’t believe Liv told him I wasn’t ok. Wow - good content for lyrics. You truly cannot write this.
How will people react to diss tracks? Extremely negatively. Or no reaction. We shall see. Maybe no real names in the titles...... only on Oh my. 4 names in titles is too many. Don’t release Auto track. Maybe on Voice Memos.
Track List: Good God Bed Head Rosa Reprise Oh My House Pop 1 skydive Pop 2 APhex GVO Pay 4 Take some Cherish Stars in F Are ya ok too bright Honeys Get to work Everybody That You Know Frost Bit BPC NYC New Age Heimet Helmet Deadbeat dads watermill for slitting bars romantic song david byrne Cinema study in cinema Brain ego Cherry doc marten Can’t liv w/o Venmo groceries Oh you like? Things are good right now - hope they stay that way.
Feel like Ezra Keonig - hopefully someone reads this one day and agrees. Different time in history and the internet - hope this is less cringe than Ezra’s blog , probably not. Ezra, if you’re reading this, sorry. See ya at Bernie’s rally.

since i don’t have a particularly active following i’m going to answer these for my own sake
1. crocheting but i’m a perfectionist, which is both a good and a bad thing
2. i have had a crisis - about not having a space that is uniquely mine to be alone and thrive, i tend to freak out when i get too stressed out by uni work and i do things without thinking first
3. i range from a 7 to 10, which isn’t great
4. i have so many books but i just won’t pick one up even though i know i enjoy reading there’s some sort of block on my hands from reaching for the books a metre away from me

6. tough one. i learnt that i lack patience and that i rely on my relationships with people to be happy (?) but that i also do like to be alone and can’t handle nagging
7. twitter and instagram, or netflix, some days i’ve spent the whole day doing just one thing whether that be social media, watching something, crocheting, or playing acnh. not much variety in my day

10. i think i’ll still be very cautious unless the virus is completely eradicated, but i’d probably go to the cinema, eat at a restaurant, go for a drink somewhere, maybe then a club, most of all though i want to travel again, i live for that
11. well i’m doing the work i absolutely have to do for uni but you won’t catch me on a microsoft teams lecture, my opinion is that none of us students feel obliged to participate and have little to no motivation right now
12. not at all! we should all be following south korea in the way they have quarantined people with the virus, told people to wear masks and made it possible for everyone to get masks, and kept track of people who have had the virus with the corona map. incredible.

14. i exercise most days if not everyday actually, i go for walks in the fields and do a lot of strength exercises. also not going crazy with the snacks

“They received relegated from the Premier League closing year and non-public the parachute money.
“They’ve ride from the closing two years ago and so that they non-public more ride in their squad to play a sport love this than us.
“Positive, we beat them twice [this season] and that would per chance per chance give us barely of self perception. But the closing is one other yarn.”
Parker revives Fulham fortunes
Fulham lost their dwelling leg of the semi-closing with Cardiff nonetheless went thru on mixture
When Scott Parker took over Fulham in February 2019, within the initiating on a caretaker basis after the sacking of Claudio Ranieri, the Whites had been heading for relegation from the Premier League.
He lost his first 5 games in price, and the club had suffered 27 defeats and conceded 81 objectives by the halt of the halt-flight marketing campaign.
“I realised that this season turned into going to be an enormous arena for us,” Parker said.
“When teams get relegated there are tall wounds, and we had been in a low spell.
“The most effective arena turned into obviously searching out for to place in force a philosophy and install an valid identification on the pitch.
“Or no longer it’s been a rocky road this season since you would no longer lawful non-public a magic wand to skedaddle from a historic mentality to battling to purchase the division you would also very smartly be in.
“I spy an enormous enchancment from where we had been, and a personnel that’s progressing and resilient.”
Whites non-public Wembley ride, Bees handiest play-off woes
Fulham non-public their 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley in 2018 to design on, with captain Tom Cairney and 26-blueprint striker Aleksandar Mitrovic among 9 people of the matchday squad that day who live at Craven Cottage.

Coronavirus acts like a 'Excavator' in the music business|Techno Setting
Coronavirus acts like a 'Excavator' in the popular music industry
A number of full weeks ago my journeying for job between Leipzig and also Berlin ceased as a result of this coronavirus outbreak. I have actually given that then understood I have actually been actually totally eaten through work the final although and haven't been taking note of worldly affairs. I totally overlooked acting on the information coverage on covid19. Like the rest of us, I have never ever seen this kind of scenario where a global virus burst out so quickly around the globe.
Purportedly the constantly harmful and also aged that are actually thought about the absolute most at risk in our society currently over time are actually the absolute most in jeopardy, however there have been actually bunches of newspaper article from all over the world about folks under the age of fifty that are actually being actually laid up in Intensive Treatment.
Along with what believes that a comprehensive lockdown in result throughout the globe, to sway this infection which our company at this minute don't understand just how much it will definitely take our company in Corona's cooling rollercoaster. A considerable amount of individuals from throughout the world are really straining, the music business is actually enduring financially now over time, from group managers, PR organizations as well as the DJs. While all of us are being actually informed that social distancing is actually a must, purportedly any type of social get in touch with may create the matters worse.
Must our team comply with the policies of each of our federal governments and remain at our homes or should we say fuck the globe and be defiant and also keep going crazy whatever?
To become truthful, I am actually still quite a lot in shock about just how the world has totally shutdown but also for fundamental essential needs. Every little thing appears inverted, it is actually a little creepy, it seems that one thing thus little such as a microorganism can essentially handle traveling, globe markets, as well as authorities, an infection that's still in its own infancy participating in mayhem outside and in. Last night I went purchasing for groceries and also any of the grocery stores I went to all had operated out of fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, eggs, bread, spaghetti all the everyday based was actually fully gone.
Let's continue track and also discuss the songs industry, where nightclubs like the epic Berghain and Berlin's finest Tresor among various other clubs almost everywhere are defending their presence. DJs are immediately certainly not being actually scheduled or every one of their approaching jobs for the following pair of months being terminated and God knows for how much time. The cycle of the songs field is actually being damaged presently. This is actually why I had an interest in exactly how DJs coming from various spots around the entire world & & exactly how it's impacted them as well as just how they are actually coping with it today.
We asked numerous individuals coming from the songs industry; How possesses the 'LOCKDOWN' condition impacted you individually as well as how are your household taking care of the disruption as well as perhaps very most importantly, just how is it impacting you fiscally?
DAVE CLARKE
"The important things concerning this lockdown is actually just how you discover exactly how it is actually affecting each and every individual, the anxiety, the worry of does a sneezing indicate merely a cold or "The Infection"? It is more vital than ever to connect and also mention hi digitally to every person you care approximately, to pay attention, to learn (I was actually talking with a friend in China to attempt and learn ideas for instance) to sustain, to acquire help, to try as well as be actually amusing and have submissiveness. Easy things like losing the drone of the urban area seems for me has actually been actually quite disturbing, you really feel alone, the managing your food items source like a stockroom for efficiency (which tbh need to possess consistently held true, yet an unacceptable apple believes that a crime currently) understanding individuals may certainly not pay for food items, the stress they possess.
The loss of all the liberties we considered given, in retrospection the pointless stupidity of business community. Walking the roads to acquire food experiences like Sundays made use of to be actually, every little thing now is actually full-on sell sell, probably closing the outlets down for a time a week will definitely help the mind, the loved ones, the private inhale far better. Oh, and the social networking sites birthed DJ's, possibly a lot better for me not to claim just about anything regarding that shitshow of arrogance. Allow's survive this find out, grieve, be actually better individuals, oh and really love even more honestly."
SANTONIO ECHOLS
"For me, It is actually beginning to get actual for our team in Michigan. My partner as well as I chose to stockpile on some things 3 weeks ago for the residence (food-wise) merely in the event that. I personally assume it is going to get a lot worse just before it gets better. After chatting with my booking organization My jobs were actually terminated or on grip for the month of May. Monetarily it is actually not affecting our team my better half is actually working from house and we possess a couple of dollars do away with for a stormy time. Companies are actually hurting a little, I'm hoping that this will definitely be actually short phrase. Effective my moms and dads and my spouse's parents to remain within was the tough part. Finding exactly how it is actually influencing seniors differently ... Let's keep prayerful!"
ORLANDO VOORN
"Most of us recognize that Coronavirus is actually a major concern for any individual around immediately, but as for feeling the economic grief on my edge and likely for a lot of underground songs producers, this performs not modify a lot given that our company have been paralyzed through this new system of greed as well as no drug age. Many of us discovered currently other means to keep afloat. I make popular music for over three decades and also ain't going no place.
I wish all my actual popular music manufacturers and also lovers to keep tough and strive and smart to maintain doing you for US. Nevertheless, the "elite" Non-producer DJ along with a million fans are currently weakened through this virus and can not go fist-pumping or even whatever else unawareness they may consider to supply the audience. Can not create that 50k a program anymore, I would certainly must claim along with satisfaction in my vocal. Fate involved you incognito as well as her name is Circle. Feel free to do not be sobbing online over how poor you possess it and also begging for donations given that you can not hand push any sort of longer. Because of the brand-new corrupt unit of Fans the whole scene how it got created has actually obtained raped from its own source by the greed of the corporates alleged advocates of the Techno as well as residence scene but definitely are out commercial just. Do not care about the top quality of the popular music. Those events that do treatment are actually rare. Below ground for life little one our experts such as roaches, certainly never dying always living As well as along with that being pointed out Let's return to the course!"
STATIC OBSTRUCTION
"This coronavirus pandemic carries 2 major risks to individual suffering, a wellness danger which is without a doubt the best essential but stone's throw behind is the financial risk. This 2nd one can easily trigger human suffering on a much bigger scale, unemployment, bankruptcy, making fear. Its own a cause and effect and a symptom of the capitalist device that is actually dated and also extreme. Our financial system might be established up in a manner elevating everyone from hardship, certainly not only the abundant, but also for the absolute most part, it loads scientific research as well as advancement. In my viewpoint, our federal governments need to have to carry out a global simple earnings for all, so people do not suffer needlessly, our company do not need additional mayhem bordering this problems, we require actual management and a planning of action to reduce the quantity of interruption presently happening.
All artists/DJs/graphic designers/promoters are influenced through this current state of affairs. Over the final 10 years, our team have actually viewed the amount of amount of money our company bring in coming from generating music decrease due to the onset of streaming web sites. In 2015 was awful in mind available because I started releasing popular music in 2005 and also but my songs was actually streamed over 500,000 opportunities on a variety of different internet sites. Along with most countries entering into lockdown, I am now not needed to create leaflets or banners as all events have been called off. I'm additionally certainly not able to DJ anywhere, each of this will possess a knock-on impact of eating into our financial savings. Currently, I don't understand anyone with the virus, each of my friends and family are actually taking safety measures along with social distancing, but it's having an extensive impact on every person. Coming from my viewpoint, It presents exactly how delicate our society is actually and also partly how unproductive a considerable amount of our work are actually."
DJ SURGELES
"The 'Lock-Down' has actually delivered our company considerably. I find it in the people around me, that are currently pretty panicky and also question where this will definitely lead. My efficiencies have actually been called off up until the end of April. The only positive factor I observe right now is that individuals are actually cooperating more to try to quell the huge complication and also for example in Wuhan there is again sunlight and crystal clear skies which has certainly not taken place for many years because of the smogginess, Venice has actually also taken a positive turn, the water is very clear once again while it was polluted. Perhaps it is actually Mama Attribute that offers a warning to humanity. From an economic standpoint, I will, obviously, step, yet that doesn't matter, our company need to make an effort to obtain the Infection in control!"
ADAM HELDER
"A lot of our clients are expert DJs, as well as occasions are suspended around the planet currently. Most of all of them are facing a come by their profit and it is actually mirroring also on our job. On yet another palm it is actually a good moment for that desires to advertise a brand-new launch, there's a ton of musicians spending more opportunity on podcasts and also stay streaming DJ collections, so they're seeking brand new songs, and at Grasp Coupon we'll release soon a charity initiative entailing our most prominent services, to help the performers certainly not to lose their upcoming releases and also give a contribution, in our little bit of, to keep the underground Techno as well as Property setting running in the course of this tough instant.
The Planet is actually dealing with a significant challenge along with the COVID19 infection. Every one of you artists, keep risk-free, devote the upcoming weeks with your household and let your creative thinking flow, now especially we require your contribution, for our thoughts and also spirit. Our personnel at Reach Coupon will be operating, as standard, to support musical tasks during these tough days, waiting on the instant we will certainly be clubbing once more together, bound as being one."
Ecilo is actually popular for his partner with Detroit inventor Thomas Barnett (Rhythim is actually Rhythim w/ Derrick May), we inquired him just how the situation is at this second in Jakarta (Indonesia).
"Our team are certainly not actually on Lockdown, our condition at the moment is the Authorities notifies everyone to operate from their homes plus all the schools are closed. As for me individually, it definitely influences me since I'm a citizen at Club Kilo Jakarta (Indonesia) and also it's immediately is unfilled and also a few individuals involve the celebration every night. Hey, I completely know it, It's technique too self-centered for me to think business-wise about the money aspect. Crucial for everyone is actually to remain paid attention to their health and wellness as well as be in addition to their family members in these weird opportunities where a virus is keeping getting control of the planet. For all promoters, it is actually time for them to perform investigation that the real skills are actually so our experts can easily possess typically one thing brand new hereafter pandemic. I wish all my close friends throughout the globe, and I truly think our company can encounter it all together."-- Ecilo Jones

U.S., Mexico expectations for Friday’s friendly? Test their next waves of talent for bigger tests to come
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Friday’s friendly at MetLife Stadium between the U.S. and Mexico doesn’t come with a ton of emotional baggage or themes of revenge. The historic animosity between longtime rivals is present, but both sides will be looking to get something a bit more meaningful out of their latest friendly.
ESPN’s Tom Marshall and Noah Davis preview the match from both perspectives.
U.S. point of view: Biggest test yet for the “kids”
The point of sport is to win, of course, but perhaps it’s also to learn. That’s especially true for a national team, who plays endless friendlies that present learning opportunities intermingled with the qualifiers and tournaments in which victory is always the ultimate objective. When the USMNT takes the field against Mexico on Friday, a rematch in name if not in reality off the back of El Tri‘s 1-0 Gold Cup final win in July, U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter will be seeking forward momentum more than balls in the back of the net.
“A very consistent theme since we’ve been together is to just keep progressing,” he said in the lead-up to the game. “We got to a certain point in the Gold Cup. We want to analyze where we got to, and now can we build on that in this next game, in this next phase?”
– Berhalter: Dest will start vs. Mexico – O’Hanlon: Dest is proof of U.S. progress in developing talent
Continuing to build on “that,” the style and philosophy Berhalter brought to the team after his December 2018 hire would be a welcome sight for American fans who watched the squad flounder in an awkward limbo for a half-decade. Early returns have been decent if not spectacular, most notably a strong Gold Cup in which the Americans dominated until they didn’t and never looked overmatched.
Against Mexico (and Uruguay in St. Louis on Tuesday), Berhalter has close to a full-strength roster — Tyler Adams, DeAndre Yedlin, Tim Weah and Matt Miazga are missing due to injury — and 180 minutes to test ideas, theories and combinations. “Every player on the team is a puzzle piece,” said defender Aaron Long, one of the last year’s biggest success stories.
Berhalter’s goal over this break is simply to see what the next wave of talent has to offer as well as give more thought to where Pulisic fits best in this U.S. team.
The most important puzzle piece is where Christian Pulisic best fits. It’s not a new conundrum. Both Jurgen Klinsmann and Bruce Arena tried — and succeeded/failed in equal measure — to figure out where to play the American’s most dynamic attacker. Berhalter’s choice about Pulisic will dictate a great deal of the rest of the formation. The Chelsea acquisition is listed as a forward on the latest roster, as opposed to the midfield role he occupied in the pre-Gold Cup releases. This might mean that the coach sees his young star playing farther up the field, likely out on a wing with Josh Sargent in the middle, or it might mean that Pulisic will play farther back and that an “F” or an “M” next to his name means little.
It’s also a chance to continue integrating the next generation into the national team.
“The youth wave for the U.S. is coming,” FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon said. “I feel like I’m having gray hairs in the back of my head at 21. I don’t know why. But I’m always excited about this youth.”
The fact is simple: a roster comprised of American players 24 and under would be the favorite to beat a starting XI of guys 25 and up. Making this transition as seamlessly as possible needs to be a priority. Mexico and Uruguay, two quality but beatable sides, present wonderful opportunities to find out who of the newer crew can hang in Berhalter’s proactive style.
The coach understands this. He knows how valuable the games, and the trainings are for the future prospects. For example, there’s a shot for Atlanta United FC center-back Miles Robinson. “It’s a chance for us to get an up-close look at him,” Berhalter said. “We know he has the physical talent. We know he’s a competitor. We know he’s had a great season so far for Atlanta. It’s nice to get him in our environment and see how he can adapt to our style of play.” It’s high praise for the 22-year-old, and Berhalter could offer similar sentiments about at least a half dozen players in camp.
2022 World Cup qualifying begins in roughly a year. The process, as always, continues.
— Noah Davis
Mexico point of view: Stay perfect under Martino
A victory for Mexico over the United States in a noncompetitive game would exorcise the stat that El Tri hasn’t defeated the Stars and Stripes in a friendly since 1999. Also at stake is Mexico head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s undefeated record in his first 10 games in charge.
Obviously, the Gold Cup final was the big one for the rivalry and a victory for the U.S. wouldn’t change that or bring much in the way of revenge. In fact, it would possibly fuel the perception — at least for El Tri fans — that Mexico tends to be the team that wins when it matters. The stats in games since 2000 may be 14 wins, eight losses and six draws but in official competition, Mexico has won eight of the past 15 games (8-6-1).
Mexico does head into this game as a significant favorite. Martino has 31 players in camp and the return of Hector Herrera, Jesus “Tecatito” Corona, Javier Hernandez, Hirving Lozano and Miguel Layun means that El Tri is much stronger than it was during the Gold Cup. The victory over the U.S. in the final came without arguably Mexico’s best two players (Herrera, Lozano) and the national team’s all-time top scorer (Hernandez). Martino himself said “we will be better” after the Gold Cup final and referenced those absentees.
– Martino brings strong Mexico squad to U.S.
The big question mark is which starting XI Martino will put out on Friday given the number of players in his squad and a game against Argentina coming up on Tuesday in San Antonio. More than the result, Martino will be looking closely at what those returning players can bring.
Martino is thought to be delighted with the progress of the younger players, particularly at how they have adopted his methods. The thinking is that Mexico will play the group stage of the CONCACAF Nations League (Bermuda, Panama) with the younger group, with a few of the more experienced players sprinkled in. Therefore, these games against the U.S. and Argentina will be used by Martino to figure out which players of the Europe-based players will be best suited for CONCACAF Nations league action.
For example, there seems to be little point in bringing both Raul Jimenez and Hernandez to play away against Bermuda given that one is guaranteed to be on the bench in Martino’s 4-3-3 system. (It’ll probably be one of Andres Guardado or Erick Gutierrez.) Equally, the Pulisic vs. Lozano angle — mainly pushed in the Spanish-language media — may not have any legs given both aren’t exactly the most brash personalities willing to trash-talk, but it will nevertheless be of interest to see two of CONCACAF’s best attacking on the same field and on opposite teams. Having such quality has to be good for the rivalry, especially given both are now playing for European clubs that are expected to be fighting for titles.
Lastly, this should be an entertaining game. Mexico has usually been the protagonist in this rivalry in terms of having the ball and taking the game to the U.S., something that’s continued under Martino’s aggressive style, but with Berhalter as coach, it seems like Stars and Stripes are now looking to play more front-foot soccer, meaning there should be plenty of space for the attacking talents on both teams to shine.

Solar Eclipse Special, and Plenty of Planets!
(Above: The Moon’s shadow darkens the sky around the eclipsed Sun. Look for a 360 degree sunset along the horizon during totality)
Stargazing News for this week (from August 20th) by Chris Vaughan. (Feel free to pass this along to friends and send me your comments, questions, and suggested topics.) I post these with photos at http://astrogeoguy.tumblr.com/ where the old editions are archived. You can also follow me on Twitter as @astrogeoguy! All times mentioned are in Eastern Standard Time. Please click this MailChimp link to subscribe to these emails. If you are a teacher or group leader interested in joining me in a guided field trip to the York University Observatory, visit www.astrogeo.ca.
(Above: Seconds before totality, the diamond ring effect appears. During totality the Sun’s large white corona appears and solar prominences will appear as pink/orange flashes around the Moon’s disk)
Solar Eclipse Basics
As viewed from the Earth’s surface, the Moon moves from west to east with respect to the distant background stars. In fact, over the course of an evening, it’s easy to observe the Moon traveling eastward compared to stars located near it in the sky. At one point in the Moon’s monthly orbit, it passes between the Earth and the Sun, becoming invisible due to the Sun’s glare. This is the definition of New Moon.
If the Sun, Earth, and Moon were all orbiting in the same plane (imagine a model of them on a tabletop), every New Moon would temporarily block the Sun and cast a circular shadow on the Earth. At every Full Moon, the Earth would hide the Sun from the Moon as it passed through our shadow for a few hours, producing a Total Lunar Eclipse. So why do these events seem to be so rare?
While the objects in the Solar System orbit the Sun in roughly the same plane, each body’s orbit is tilted by a small angle that carries it sometimes above and sometimes below the Solar System’s “tabletop”, like the rising and falling horses on a rotating carousel. The main reason eclipses occur infrequently is because the Moon’s orbit is tilted, or inclined, by about 5° from the Earth’s orbital plane.
On infrequent, but predictable occasions, the moments of New Moon and Full Moon occur when the Moon is situated at the place where its orbit and the Earth’s orbit intersect, also known as a node. This is the geometry that creates eclipses. The Earth has a much larger diameter than the Moon, so an eclipse can still occur when the Moon is slightly below or above the node. That is why each eclipse is visible from a particular latitude on the Earth. When the Moon is near a node, it is either climbing slightly or descending slightly along the 5° slope. The effect of this is to add a slant to the eclipse track on the Earth. The Earth’s constant rotation during the eclipse serves to lengthen the eclipse track. That’s why the tracks of totality change in both latitude and longitude.
For an unknown, but fortunate reason, the size of the Sun’s disk and the Moon’s disk observed from Earth are almost exactly the same, even though the Sun is about 400 times larger! If this were not so, we would not be treated to the splendor of a Total Solar Eclipse.
During a Total Solar Eclipse, the Moon’s round shadow sweeps across the Earth faster than the speediest fighter jet, completely blocking the Sun for observers along the track of the shadow for only a few minutes. The best eclipses have 250 km wide tracks and many minutes of totality. Along both sides of the track, observers see only part of the Sun obscured – the farther from the path of totality, the less of a “bite” is taken out of the Sun. This is called a Partial Solar Eclipse.
Because the Moon’s orbit is elliptical, it is looms closer (perigee) and draws farther (apogee) from the Earth during every orbit, making the Moon subtend a slightly larger and smaller angle in the sky respectively. When the Moon is near apogee during a Total Solar Eclipse, it is too small to completely cover the Sun’s disk, and we observe an Annular Solar Eclipse. By the way, a solar eclipse is actually not an eclipse, but an occultation – when one body passes in front of, and obscures, the other.
Astronomers use the term “contact” to describe the stages of a solar eclipse. First contact is said to occur when the leading edge of the Sun and Moon first touch. Only after this occurs, will one see the “bite” in the edge of the Sun. Fourth (or last) contact occurs at the end of the encounter, at the moment when the two disks separate, i.e., the “bite” disappears.
Total Solar Eclipse of August 21, 2017
On August 21, 2017, a Total Solar Eclipse will occur along a 114 km wide track running across the Continental USA from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. At most points along the track, totality will last more than two minutes, peaking at 2 minutes, 41.6 seconds just east of St. Louis, Missouri. Observers south and north of the track will see only a partial eclipse, the amount of sun covered varies depending on the distance north or south. Basically, northern South America and all of Central and North America will be treated to at least part of the eclipse. A nice annotated map is here.
The time of totality, and the height of the Sun in the sky, depends on your longitude. The western states and provinces will see maximum eclipse around 10:18 am local time, and the Sun will be nicely positioned 40 degrees above the eastern horizon. In central Missouri, maximum eclipse occurs at 1:14 pm local time, with the Sun 63 degrees above the southern horizon. The eastern seaboard will see totality around 2:48 pm local time, with the Sun 61 degrees above the southwestern horizon. In each case, first contact occurs about 90 minutes earlier and last contact takes place 90 minutes later. The free Eclipse Safari app for iOS and Android can tell you when the eclipse will occur where you are, and when. It also includes live video streams from NASA and lots of tips about viewing the eclipse. I covered the app in detail in “How to Prep for Totality with New Eclipse Safari Mobile App” and I highly recommend it.
Totality brings additional observing opportunities, but you’ll need to work quickly. The naked eye star Regulus, in Leo (the Lion), will be sitting less than one degree (about a finger’s width) to the upper left of the eclipsed Sun. Reddish Mars, though slightly dimmer at magnitude 1.77, will be 8 degrees (just under a fist diameter) to the right of the eclipse. Looking farther along the same line, very bright Venus will be located 34 degrees to the lower right (west) of the eclipse. Look 51 degrees in the opposite direction for bright Jupiter. For a challenge, you can hunt for Mercury, at visual magnitude 4.2, sitting only 10 degrees to the left of the eclipse. You can also look for a 360° sunset all around you – and the diamond ring and Baily’s Beads effects caused by sunlight sneaking past the moon’s limb.
While a partial eclipse shape can be seen through thin cloud, clear skies are extremely important for enjoying totality during a solar eclipse. Be sure to check your local forecast the days and hours ahead, and be prepared to drive east or west along the track of totality to reach clear skies. Ensure that you don’t veer too far south or north.
(Above: Safe viewing methods are necessary when ANY portion of the Sun’s disk is uncovered)
Observing the Solar Eclipse
It is NEVER safe to look at a Solar Eclipse without eye protection, with one exception. Observers during the few minutes of totality may turn their gaze upon the Moon-obscured Sun and see the glorious corona and red solar prominences that rise from the Sun’s photosphere. Outside of totality, part of the Sun’s disk is always exposed, and any amount of unprotected viewing is harmful to your eyes. Sunglasses are NOT enough to protect your eyes. They may make the sunlight dim enough to seem comfortable, but they do not filter out the harmful invisible ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation that damages eye tissue. Your retinas do not have pain receptors that will alert you to the damage you’re doing to them.
Safe methods of observing solar eclipses include special eclipse glasses (commonly inserted into astronomy magazines published prior to major eclipses), #14 or darker welder’s glass, pinhole projection setups, and special telescope filters. NEVER pass unfiltered sunlight through a telescope or binoculars. Damage to vision will be instantaneous, the equipment will likely suffer damage, and there is risk of fire, too.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Events
In the GTA, we will only see a partial solar eclipse, but about 76% of the sun will be covered at maximum eclipse. The local times for the eclipse are as follows: first contact at 1:10:33 pm, maximum coverage at 2:31:50 pm, and last contact at 3:48:52 pm.
(Above: For the Toronto area, the maximum partial eclipse will reach 76% coverage as shown here.)
Visit www.rascto.ca for a comprehensive list of solar eclipse viewing events all across the GTA.
The Ontario Science Centre, University of Toronto, York University, and McMaster, major libraries, and regional astronomy clubs are all hosting free public viewing sessions during eclipse time – many handing out eclipse glasses.
Non-Eclipse Public Events
Taking advantage of dark moonless evening skies this week, the members of the RASC Toronto Centre will gather at Long Sault Conservation Area, north of Bowmanville on (only) the first clear evening from Monday to Thursday this week. You don’t need to be an RASC member, or own any equipment, to join them. Check here for details and watch the banner on their homepage or their Facebook page for the GO or NO-GO decision around 5 pm each day.
Eastern GTA sky watchers are invited to join the RASC Toronto Centre and Durham Skies for stargazing at the edge of Lake Ontario in Millennium Square in Pickering on Friday evening, August 25th, from 6 pm to 11 pm. Details are here. Before heading out, check the RASCTC home page for a Go/No-Go call in case it's too cloudy to observe.
Sun, Moon, and Planets
Tomorrow (Monday) the moon reaches its New Moon phase, triggering a total solar eclipse for North America! Meanwhile, after Monday’s eclipse, the Moon continues to journey eastward in its orbit – reappearing as a young crescent very low in the western sky after sunset on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday evening, and for the rest of the week, it rises later and waxes fuller, making it much easier to spot.
On Thursday and Friday night, the still slim Moon will hop over Jupiter – sitting 8° to the planet’s right on Thursday and 5° to the upper left (and above the bright star Spica) the following evening.
(Above: Jupiter at far right sets in the west in early evening, while Saturn at left lingers into the wee hours)
Jupiter is the very bright object low in the southwestern evening sky for two hours after sunset, setting about 10 pm local time. Looking south, Saturn is the medium-bright, yellowish object partway up the sky after the evening sky darkens. It sets in the west about 1 am local time. This summer, look for the easy to recognize star pattern called the Teapot sitting about two fist diameters to the lower left of Saturn. The stars of Scorpius (the Scorpion) flank Saturn on the lower right. The scorpion’s brightest star, reddish Antares is only a generous fist width to Saturn’s right (west).
(Above: Uranus and Neptune are visible throughout the night, but finding them in the faint constellations of Pisces and Aquarius is a challenge)
Blue-green Uranus, in Pisces (the Fishes) rises shortly after 10 pm local time and is visible for the rest of the night in binoculars under a dark sky. Tiny blue Neptune, which is observable all night, is in the southeastern sky about two finger widths to the lower left of the medium-bright star Hydor in Aquarius (the Water-Bearer). After it rises in the eastern sky about 3:40 am local time, extremely bright Venus will catch your eye until dawn. This week, the planet continues to descend slowly sunwards. Sky charts for the visible planets are here.
(Above: Venus continues to drop slowly sunward in the eastern pre-dawn sky, ending a long morning apparition)
Mercury and Mars are near the sun in solar conjunction, but may appear for observers in the path of totality during the total solar eclipse.
Keep looking up to enjoy the sky! I love getting questions so, if you have any, send me a note.

Jose, Naime, Sonia, David, Jesús y Silvia.

My ABCovid-19 Journal, Day 2 – Letters “F” through “J”
Welcome to Day 2 of my #COVID19 holiday break, welcome to my ABCovid Journal, letters “F” through “J. If you hadn’t tuned into the Health Populi blog yesterday, 10th August 2020, you missed the first five letters of my Age of Corona alphabet, curated in my art journal created in the early weeks of the pandemic. Click the link to back-track and catch up with us…
I should explain why I’m sharing this project in the Health Populi blog this week. Last month, long-time colleague and friend Colin Hung interviewed me on the #HITMC broadcast to discuss a lovely recognition I’d received: HIT Advocate of the Year, a program highlighting various friends-in-the-field active in digital health, communications and marketing, sponsored by Medigy. Colin scheduled time with me to discuss how I came to do what I do, and in the long and winding road of a story, I picked up this journal to show him how I spent time early in the pandemic organizing my thoughts and feelings and data in the #GreatLockdown. My journaling has been a private thing; but in this case, having shared a snippet of it with Colin and folks who have been viewing the broadcast since put online, I decided to share it more widely here in my blog while on holiday this week.
There you have the rationale for this departure from my usual content….and now, on to the next five letters in the book…
“F” is for Fauci.
And what better “F” could I select for the coronavirus pandemic?
This is a particularly busy page in my journal, as you will come to see through the week…many pages have a lot of white space, with Dr. F’s tribute more crowded with images I couldn’t resist adding to his entry.
I started with a background page of scrapbook paper featuring the chemical elements. Then I found some vintage paper devoted to science education, and the wonderful piece of ephemera noting, “Hey there smarty pants” from the Authentique Scholastic line of scrapbook papers.
I added in an image from an old magazine ad for a microscope, and then printed out an Instagram-sized photo of a pin from a member of the “Dr. Anthony Fauci Fan Club.” [A note of pandemic pop culture: Dr. Fauci has become something of a science rock star for some people, making the cover page of In Style magazine].
The final three-word sticker on the bottom right of the page speaks volumes: “Believe in Truth.”
“G” is for Gloves.
This page speaks to our early COVID-19 obsession with finding gloves to cover our hands, seeking hygiene in our building up (sometimes hoarding) pandemic pantries baking in a lot of safety-in-cleanliness. This was Nielsen’s early observation for people living in Asia and Europe, a consumer behavior trend that then morphed U.S. health citizens into hygiene shoppers.
For the theme of the page, instead of focusing on the literal latex and medical glove shortage, I used images from vintage fashion papers when gloves were de rigueur for both women and men.
I layered in some fashion-themed scrapbook paper and a tagline from an old magazine ad: “Bracelets and gloves to charm the feminine heart.”
A surprise element here is the Echo tag that came from a pair of gloves I recently purchased.
Finally, I added a photo of a worker in an Amazon warehouse working the Prime line, wearing the iconic blue gloves of the pandemic moment.
“H” is for hand-washing.
Perhaps the most impactful and important public health tactic individual people can undertake in the Age of Corona is washing hands. We re-learned how to do this early on in the #StayHome era, finding out that 20-seconds was the magic timing for lathering up under water.
For this page, I first laid down hand-made paper from Florence, Italy (my happy place), with organic spots that looked viral to me.
I layered on top a printed image from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) hand-washing page (“Keep Calm and Wash Your Hands,” cleverly adopting the iconic theme from Great Britain’s WWII mantra, “Keep Calm and Carry On”). On the left-hand page is a card taken from a hotel room bathroom asking for the occupant to “help make a difference” by re-using towels.
The page is finished off with a sticker quote on the bottom right: “something to remember.” I imagine one of the health behavior changes that will stick with most of us post-pandemic is our hand hygiene, honed over months of mindfulness in the coronavirus journey.
“I” is for Italy
I mentioned Florence, Italy, above as my “happy place.” My European Union citizenship comes from Italy, a nation I love and a culture very dear to me across many life dimensions: art and artisanship, food (agriturismo and Slow Food), faith, and love of family.
I started this page with a map of Italy, and found a very special photo of a street worker in front of the Tower of Pisa cleaning the neighborhood around this iconic site familiar to everyone.
I added in a photo of two maps of Italy at the bottom of the right side page, illustrating the fast-spread of the virus in the northern hotspot of the nation, an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the bottom left, you’ll see a photo of the opera tenor Andrea Boccelli, who gave a moving performance to benefit the Italian pandemic effort, Music for Hope. We watched this over and over, mesmerized. [Bocelli was subsequently featured in Lady Gaga’s benefit for the pandemic, which you can savor here, along with the awesome Celine Dion, Lang Lang, and John Legend].
“J” is for Johnson (as in “Boris”)
From the Day 1 ABCovid-19 Journal published yesterday and here listening to my waxing lyrically about Italy, you now know I have a relationship with Europe. We started our marriage living in London, so it is natural for me to care about the spread of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom.
On this page, I laid down some vintage paper I’ve collected for my London travel journals made over many years of traveling there.
The week I had created this page, Prime Minister Johnson was in the ICU in London dealing with the coronavirus. It was a tense few days for Britons, but thankfully the PM came out of the hospital and has recuperated, assuming his leadership duties fairly quickly thereafter.
For the page, I added in various ephemera — an image of the London Eye, a journaling card featuring Big Ben, and an antique travel card. The vertically placed British flag tells us right away the geographical “where” of the subject, and a little “Cheers” sticker bolsters hopefulness.
With BoJo’s page, we have completed our five letters of Day 2 of my ABCovid-19 journal. Tomorrow, you’ll learn how I saw “K” through “O” in the first months of the pandemic, with a look into Kirkland, WA, lockdown, masks, New York and nurse, and outbreak.
Stay tuned, and stay well!

In the words of Tony Stark in the beginning of Iron Man 3, "Let's track this from the beginning."My online dating tenure was not the worst, not the best, can't even say the needle was even in the middle. There was so many factors that have made me want to write about my experiences and as I was driving to the park today I finally figured out why. To help people. If I can help one man or woman have the courage to walk away, or swipe away as it were the dating apps into their trash container then I've done my job.I have experienced many different situations with probably over four years. Let me break it down before you wonder how old I am or how I look. I'm currently 31 years old, 6'3, athletic, runner, active, full time job, still at home but that was because of the care of my grandmother and I do not regret it for one second. I've always been the type to want a serious relationship and to start a family. I don't do the hook up thing, and yes I actually believe in open communication. Honesty in online dating? I should've known better! Big sports and country music fan as well. Let me stop as I feel like I'm rewriting my online profile! My first real and what I was thought of as the "one" came from Match. It started off very nicely. Her tagging me in Instagram GIFs with a girl jumping into a guys arms, oh and then actually doing just that the next time I came to pick her up. I remember in fact when I caught her I didn't want to let her go because that moment was so special to me. It was my first time being actually happy since my nine year relationship ended a few years ago. She laughed as I held her and said "you can put me down now" I quickly replied "Never babe." We went on a weekend to cape may and had a pretty decent time. I could feel however that something was a miss. Especially when we went to breakfast our last morning on our little getaway and there was hardly any conversation. I remember the exact day and how it went when she ended things. The night before she had stayed over and we had a bonfire. It was just a really good relaxing time together. In the morning I distinctly remember sitting on the top step of the stairs tying my boots and she came walking up the stairs smiling and gave me a big kiss. I smiled to myself, "This is what it's all about." I went to work, it was my sixth day that week and I wanted the hours because she planned a trip to Florida for me to meet her grandparents. I was exhausted after the work day so I came home and just put on the Mets. I remember sending her a text saying " hey we lucked out that deGrom will be pitching the day we go to the game." I got up to grab a bottle of water. I came back to see my phone light up with her name and when I saw the preview of the message it looked lengthy. "I'm sorry I don't think our relationship is going to work out the way you think it is." Just. Like. That. Four months of what I thought was fun and good times, flushed away. I was absolutely broken from that. Maybe even more than the nine year. I hadn't been nor have I been that happy in a long long time.Since oh let's call her Miss A, I have had nothing but a long streak of hope to be completely destroyed every time. It didn't matter if the app was Match, eHarmony, Hinge, Bumble, or Tinder they all came away with short conversations or me being led to believe in someone who wasn't true. Perhaps I gave in too easily and invested too much of myself, but I put myself out there and wanted so hard to believe I found someone special. I lost myself alot of the time. I'm a runner and have been for about five or six years. If I found someone I was really into I would simply stop running and devote my time to phone calls, texts, dates, video chats, whatever I could do to show effort. Even writing about it now it kinda disgusts me. I know I'm better than that and I was always confident in what I bring to the table in any relationship. Hence why I didn't want to give up. Until recently.I had met my most recent date on Hinge. Let's call her Miss B. We both liked to run, marvel movies, sports, same kind of music. It seemed to be going nicely. I was on the app when I had vacationed to California. That's how I met her. I was on vacation so I wasn't really investing my emotions in it and just had a normal conversation. Until she started answering me back so quickly and with awesome answers. We had planned to do tacos and Coronas when I got back. Here's where I should've ended it and had some pride. I was at the airport texting her before my flight was supposed to leave. I suggested us go to a concert at the beach. She then proceeded to tell me she was "already going with the guy she usually goes with." I confirmed that this was going to be a date. Yet she still said she "really wanted to make plans with me and would be totally bummed if I walked away." I ended up cancelling one of my solo runs to go meet her for the first time and go run. She gave me the address to her place and we met there. I thought that was a little forward, but I really liked her so I was excited. We met, ran, talked during the run, and then she invited me into her place because I was going to show her pictures of my trip. Midway through the pictures I went to kiss her and she obliged. It was a pretty intense makeout session. I collected my things and then went home not really thinking too much about it. We proceeded to meet up for runs and even went out socially. A brewery date followed by ice cream and romantic walk on the beach hand in hand. She even bought Met tickets! Here's where things go sideways.I texted her on a Tuesday night because I wanted to see if she was still going to the concert with Mr X let's call him. She confirmed she was still going out. I should've ended it right there because I believe in seeing one person at a time, especially if you're having sex with that person. Regrettably, I went to her place the next day. We ran, we cuddled, we had sex, we watched TV until she had to pick up her son. I had all these thoughts in my head because I knew she was going out that night with someone else, but couldn't get them out to her. I felt like the whole time I was walking on eggshells with her. It was an awful feeling that I'll never forget. I didn't hear much from her like I usually did when I got home that Wednesday. Combine the feelings I already had in my head, feeling like she's ghosting, and the flooding that took place in my house from the heavy rain that day my head was a mess. I texted her the next morning saying exactly how I felt, that she going out with someone else especially after we were intimate really hurt me. That's when I think it hit her that this wasn't going to work. She was going away that weekend and didn't get much reception. Yet Miss B still managed to Instagram message me and still communicate with me. She even texted me immediately when she got reception back. We had plans that Monday after her weekend away to have dinner. She had said "We'll do tacos and Coronas like we talked about." Me being the person I am wanted to surprise her with picking up stuff to make our own ice cream sundaes for dessert. I bought the beer, tortilla chips, dip, and the ice cream groceries. No problem. When I got there I received a very cold greeting. She worked from home so I just laid next to her on her bed watching TV. She asked "Do you wanna go get guac for the chips?" I said sure and as we walked into whole foods together I never felt so distant from someone. It was so weird. We got back and pretty much devoured the chips and dips. She worked until 8, but before that I asked her around 7:30 if we could make dinner together when she was done with work. "That sounds good" replied Miss B. 8 pm came and she claimed she was stuffed from the chips and didn't want dinner. At that point I said to myself Wait. WHAT?! If you invite someone for dinner I think the simple expectation is to have, oh I don't know.. DINNER?! The thing that really got me was that even if she was tired or whatever and didn't want to cook a normal person would've said "hey babe, let's just order a pizza or Chinese tonight. We'll do the tacos another time." Right? Something to that extent. We ended up having sex twice since I slept over and she cuddled up next to me even in the last few minutes before I left for work.Tuesday came and by 5:30 pm she had texted me to say there wasn't a connection and that it was over. I didn't even respond. Why? What could I even say at that point? It hurt me because of the time I invested in trying with her. I really have it a good shot. Only to have a pointless text sent to me when Miss B was with me just a few hours before. She never knew, but I had gotten us reservations to the Porsche Club at Citi Field. It was a complete surprise. We would have dinner with a beautiful view of the ballpark and then go to our seats to enjoy the game. Watching that game was definitely tough because I knew I was supposed to be there and it was Pete Alonso free shirt Friday.Congratulations on following me this far. I understand these are only two lengthy examples, but they are the major events for me that have caused me to FINALLY quit the online dating world. Between messages not responded to, or meaningless conversations, efforts not matched, or just the plain old ghosting I'm simply not cut out to be in that world anymore. Lord knows I've given it my best and I've tried very hard to create a spark that shouldn't have to be created. I've been really focusing on my running and I have a major race in October. Good luck to those still trying, but please if you're thinking about quitting I promise that there is a whole big life out there for you! You are so much more than a swipe left or right. You are valuable and amazing! Believe in yourself and work hard every single day. via /r/dating_advice

Fast Five
I am having slightly better turnaround times at getting to my latest installment covering the Fast and Furious franchise with today’s film being 2011’s Fast Five (trailer). The rousing success of the fifth film served as the blueprint for all the films following it until this day. I went in with no fears that it would still hold up well nearly a decade later. As mentioned in my entry for Fast & Furious, the films were starting to evolve from the core trilogy that were primarily about late night car tuner culture and street races and shift more towards implementing these rides in elaborate heists. Fast Five goes all in on this concept and minus a few subtle callbacks throughout the film, ditches the street race focus of the first three films entirely. Now the heists are at the forefront and became larger than life where director Justin Lin went on to state in the commentary he learned to ‘embrace the ridulous-ness’ and go all out with fantastical stunts that I recall leading to many popped eyes in my initial viewing in the theater.
Fast Five sees Dom (Vin Diesel), Bryan (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) reunite in Brazil after freeing Dom from custody at the end of the previous film. They meet up with their old pal, Vince (Matt Schulze) who we have not seen since the original film. The four of them group up for a job involving a train that has some spectacular stunts to kick things off. During the job they discover there is more than meets the eye and they encounter the antagonist of the film by the name of Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida). The four decide to assemble a team to take down Reyes and claim his millions of dollars stashed away in a vault. And thus we now have the new framework for the series where ‘Team FF’ are the ultimate pros at big jobs and work together in the name of ‘FAMILY’ to take down evil-doer crime lords. The team they assemble is a all-star roll call of supporting players from previous films including Roman (Tyrese Gibson) & Tej (Ludacris) from 2Fast 2Furious, Han (Sung Kang) from Tokyo Drift, and Gisele (Gal Gadot), Leo (Tego Calderon) & Santos (Don Omar) from Fast & Furious. To cover their bases of a gang having the prerequisite computer wiz, Tej stepped up and added pro-hacker to his resume aside from fun-party-rides guy from the second film we knew him as. They receive some unexpected assists from federal agents Hobbes (The Rock) and Elena (Elsa Pataky). They are the surviving two members of a squad of federal agents (who the Giant Bomb commentary track consistently refers to as ‘Team Wildlands’) sent from the USA to track down Dom, Bryan & Mia and haul them back to America until their squad mates met their demise from an ambush sent out from Reyes. Now with a common enemy and mutual respect between the two after an adrenaline-pumping, full-on red meat, wall-pouncing, show-stealing duel, the two alphas align in a fist-bumping moment for the ages when Hobbes & Elena help out Team FF.
Somehow, director Justin Lin managed to make this ensemble cast gel together all at once. Nearly every team member has a few pivotal scenes throughout where the spotlight is on them. I was fully invested when the team is formed by the second half and is going through the stages of setting up the ultimate end-scene safe heist. Watching them all flawlessly work together and overcome every obstacle Reyes threw at them was a ride I was thrilled to tag along in. It reminded me why I loved (some) of the Ocean films and enjoying the journey of planning everything out and trying to piece together all the little things that pay off when the heist plays out. When it comes time for Team FF to swipe Reyes’ safe from his seemingly impenetrable fortress, Fast Five did not disappoint. I recall seeing this in the theater for the first time and simultaneously thinking this is the most unrealistic way to steal a safe but also loved how brazen Lin was to simply go for it and own this scene and take you on the ultimate thrill ride unlike any other heist film before it. It was like Lin stated earlier, just roll with the balls-out nature of the film and good times will be guaranteed. As with the previous films I have been re-watching, I watched this with the commentary track from the Giant Bomb crew. Aside from them cracking me up with their ‘Team Wildlands’ nickname, their commentary has lots of fun watch-a-long insight such as regretting bringing Coronas to the viewing party after realizing Fast Five is the first film in the series not to feature them, ironic love for Paul Walker’s acting prowess and being in constant disbelief at Ludacris’s newfound tech skills. Vinny never saw the film before so hearing his reactions to the bigger stunts was a riot. I also listened to Justin Lin’s solo commentary on the BluRay and he is a pro at mastering solo commentaries with nonstop facts about the cast, crew and filming process. Some highlights include hearing the love he got from doing overseas press tours on the fourth film was what brought him back for the fifth, pointing out the tiny additions to the extended cut and being careful on where to film in Brazil.
Aside from the commentary, there are 12 bonus features totaling 75 minutes on the BluRay. About half of them are must-see. Usually most bonuses breaking down stunt scenes I am accustomed to in a lot of action films and I get kind of tone-deaf to them, but with Fast Five’s ambitious stunts I got a lot out of the bonuses detailing how they filmed the opening train heist and closing safe heist. Hearing how they got a mini-truck inside to drive the safe around was something else. There is also a recommended extra, On Set with Justin Lin, where Lin is shown behind-the-scenes hustling for the ultimate shots of what seems like a inconsequential scene from an earlier part of the film, but to see how Lin got it all come together to get the very best out of everyone was simply awesome. I got to see some of that too in the extra Dom vs. Hobbes where they dissect that fight scene and hearing how Lin halted production for two hours to hear Vin Diesel make his case for the inclusion of ONE MOVE in that entire fight goes to show the passion the cast and crew has for the brand. Overall it is a tremendous smattering of extra features to dive into! Fast Five is the reason why the franchise has been a mainstay in pop culture since that one hit theaters. If you have managed to elude the mega-popular brand all these years but have been pondering on giving one of them a chance, then make sure it is Fast Five. The later films are still good, over-the-top awesome heist films, but Fast Five is easily my runaway favorite of the series. HUCC v Occasional Casuals Saturday 9th June 2018 Hamstead Heath
Match report by Himalayan Correspondent Nick Taylor
Curry goat cricket anyone?
Curry goat cricket: West Indian term for a friendly, low stakes game in which the food to be consumed off field, is more important than the result on it. A curry goat match is the Windies' equivalent to the English Beer match
The occasional casuals as I had been warned felt that cricket was an excuse to have a ‘few’ beers whilst playing a friendly game of cricket with their pals. Notorious for their kit bags being the orange Sainsbury’s variety with the contents of a six pack and a box. The last two encounters had been close affairs a tie and a victory, the sun was out we were playing in civilisation not rural England it was going to be fun, even if we had to resort to potentially approaching it as if were time for curried goat.
Spurred by the three victories in 2017 and a frustrating draw first up in 2018, enthusiasm was high. Ol coming back from a year out called an early arrival for some apparently needed practice to blow of the cob webs. The outcome was seven Umprires arriving at least 30 mins before the agreed time. Unheard of. It also transpired that Matt and Gary organised had a private tuition session during the week. Not that practice had ever done us any good!?!
The squad was a mix of old and new, we had the welcome return of the official original Umpire, indeed Rob is squad No.1. The team looked a strong bowling outfit this week Ol, Manny, Jack, Simon, the new kid on the block Harry, the old kid that was a chip off the old block, Gary Aubin, we were looking solid with the ball.
Matt presented Anthony with the match ball, ball was a generous description, it must have been stitched my an arthritic blind man, square more than egg shape. We offered up a 30 over ball as the next best thing.
Anthony won the toss and as is skip’s common custom we opted to bat first. The skipper of the casuals would have also opted to field first as they celebrated the fact that they would rather have a second innings that leant itself to boozing rather that fielding. It appeared their skipper had lubricated himself already. Anthony and Dave open, 35 overs a piece, we are off.
Manny and I officiated until drinks, it was a steady start letting their most economical and dangerous bowler, who ended with 7 overs no wickets for 14, do his thing. After 10 overs we 35 without loss. By drinks Anthony had clubbed a few to the boundary and indeed brought up another well deserved 50 just before the break, by which point without loss we were 85 after 17.
Drinks in this game did mean drinks and an extended break saw the Casuals open a variety of beverages, the World Cup branded Kronenberg was a favourite. They are however seasoned professionals and a few cold ones may indeed help, much like a game of pool always need a few before the shots come off. With the Hampstead Heath buzz from the cafe and the sun beaming down Harry and I decided to follow suit, by the looks of things were weren’t getting a bat today and a Corona doesnt really count. Does it?
Anthony was ably abetted by Dave who in his own mould saw off the good and played the bad, another opening umpire innings eventually culminating in his second highest total for the umps. We need an archivist adjudication.
Anthony was looking, and by his own admission feeling good and as the Parliament Hill spectators settled through the gates and onto the boundary (in the pub at the end of the game they turned out to be the self appointed HUCC Ultras) skip holed out in the deep for 64. One follows two as is so oft the case and Dave was bowled for 28. Well played. We were 100 odd for 2.
Simon got a good one bowled and Rob came in to shore up an end whilst Jack came in on a mission to connect with what ever he threw his bat at. Rob slightly unfortunate to test the arm of one of their more able fielders who hadn’t touched a drop by the look of it, as it came in rather fast and accurate from just past square leg umpire to be run out. Jack burned out taking 20 off about 10 balls with 4 boundaries, bowled.
Ol was in next with what looked like virgin new pads, bought last season just before the injury and not had much of a run out. They took him and us to the end of the innings 11 not out, with your reporter frantically running with Ol to get us to 162 for 5.
Tea was a rather liquid affair for the opposition but they did provide several filled to the brim bread bags full of various interesting sandwiches, some pork pies and home made brownies. No curried goat.
As ever the slip cordon of doom assembled for catching practice as a warm up with Matt getting his hands warm and ready for action, and there was a lot of action behind the stumps to come.
Ol opened up and considering he hadn’t turned his arm apart from earlier in the net warm up was metronomic from the off starting with a couple of maidens. Supported by Si at the other end. Ol had new wheels for the season and they were warming up nicely. Manny came on first change and after a bout of self deprecation for a couple of wides, his tracking was back and on the money.
We kept it tight in the field as a unit and they crept to an almost equivalent score to ours at the same point, after 9 overs they 32 without loss.
Then the tide started to turn and more chances came, a tough chance to Matt driving to his right behind the stumps. Matt had been practicing in the week and just needed another chance. Ol got their opener first, bowled. Manny then took their third man for a duck caught behind off the edge to Matt. You could tell behind Matt’s grill there was hunger for more and more there was.
Ol bowled their second opener and then not wanted to turn the gas off his new wheels Anthony kept him on to bowl through. 7 overs 2 for 13, nee bad sir.
Harry came on after Ol having bowled a few in the first game, started very strongly on a pitch that was quite hard to get any variation he managed to make one rear up into their very competent looking number four and off the splice it looped to Matt well bowled Harry victim number two for Matt. He could taste blood. 4 down for 50 in the 16th.
Manny carried on and was causing all sorts of issues and chances came nearly every ball. Their middle order batsman swinging away not sure whether in frustration or lubrication but Manny spotted it and next ball fuller, straight, bowled. 61 for 5
Jack was next up and a few smiles and warm drunken words had already been exchanged between their captain who was looking very rosey red from sun and Kronenberg. We asked him when we saw Jack coming in next whether he wanted a lid and he said well only if he’s going to bowl beamers, we repeated do you want a lid?
Sure enough next ball he only just managed to duck out of the way, a few choice slurred words came back at us behind the stumps, we were only concerned for his welfare and that we weren’t confident he could weave out the way. He stuck around for a bit until Jack caught his leading edge and boom another for Matt behind. Jack then bowled another beaut wrapped a guys toes plumb in front. Their score book went a bit wobbly towards the end when i think they had lost a bit of interest or the use of their hands to write. They were 80-odd for 7.
Jack then got his third with a super forward driving caught with the assistance of forearms, stomach, legs and the chin of Manny. Would have gone upstairs but we all saw close in that it hadn’t touched the floor and the batsman walked.
Anthony then turned to his seasoned professional who had been practicing with Matt in the week. It game plan time. A brief word between the two and they trot back to their positions. Plan. Execute. Reward. Garry ‘I love you Dad’ Aubin comes steaming in, lands one truly in the right spot, makes the batsman play, finds the edge we all go up in unison. 1st ball, boom Gary has a wicket and Matt has 4 for the match. Practice will now become compulsory.
We wrap it up next over with a few looseners from your reporter and then one that is straight to the either drunk or non cricketer at number 11 who lets it hit the wicket. All out for 98.
It wasn’t a curry goat game but there was plenty of good humoured cricket and beer. I wouldn’t say we won because they was pissed but it helped.
Unbeaten 2018.
