On paper, this weekend was the end of the track season. Drew had earned a spot to run at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet where all schools in all divisions compete to earn the final 6 spots for the California State Meet in Clovis, CA. He’d scratched the 200m after CIF prelim qualifying to focus only on relays and the 400m. He came in as the 8th seed in the 400m putting him way out in lane 9 running “blind” for the first 250m. Coming out of the last turn he was shoulder to shoulder with 7th place and he put 3 years of work into the last 40m to claim his spot. I can’t begin to describe the emotion and pride. #rundrewrun (at Aliso Viejo, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxq5UvEBJED/?igshid=tkzyew3sk489

Terrific 22 Girls Rankings (November 13th)
With three meets down, we no longer have to speculate about 6 auto qualifying spots. Summit takes a leap to the top spot after manhandling the field in the NW. Naperville North took home the victory in the MW in a crowded field and Wayzata won over Edina in the Heartland.
Aside from ranking the teams there is the task of figuring out where the at-large bids might come from. This year will be especially tough with several regions looking quite deep. Based on this weekends results, the regions currently with the best chance of getting that third team are the MW, NW, NY and SW (well, more based on the regular season since the SW teams haven’t raced lated). Note that a region can qualify as many as four teams.
With Boise placing third in the NW and having had a win over #6 Great Oak early in the season, I think they have a strong argument for a bid. Remember though, the process of picking the at-large teams is not one based on who is the best “paper” teams necessarily and the committee can pick whomever they deem fit to race best at nationals.
New York is a three headed giant with Saratoga beating FM by one point at state and FM beating Liverpool by one point at sectionals. New York should definitely get 3 teams in should FM or Saratoga finish 3rd at the NY region, but Liverpool has done enough to earn an at-large bid for the fact that they have beaten FM earlier in the year, no small task.
We will know more about the SW after this coming weekend but based on the regular season they have many programs running at a national caliber level and has a good case for an at-large bid.
The Midwest ran deep this year and was snubbed last year so I expect they should get a third team in, but they will be fighting with CA for that last spot and that is not an easy task. CA can change that should the merge be very close or a surprise team unseats Claremont or Great Oak.
