Europe says farewell to eclipse-making Proba-3
ESA’s solar eclipse-making Proba-3 mission is about to depart to its launch site in India. The mission’s two spacecraft – which will manoeuvre precisely in Earth orbit so that one casts a shadow onto the other – are about to depart the facilities of Redwire Space in Kruibeke, Belgium. The pair will be flown to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, near Chennai, for the launch campaign to begin.
“This ambitious ESA mission has been many years in the making, because it is seeking to do something in space that has previously been impossible,” explains ESA mission manager Damien Galano.
“Once in orbit, Proba-3’s two satellites will enable sustained views of the Sun’s faint surrounding atmosphere, or corona, that has previously only been visible for a few brief moments during terrestrial solar eclipses. To achieve this the shadow being cast between the spacecraft must remain in precise position, which means they must fly autonomously in formation to an accuracy of a single millimetre – about the thickness of an average fingernail.
“It has taken a lot of work by ESA and our industrial and academic partners to reach this point of flight readiness. There’s a little sadness to finally say goodbye to these unique satellites, but we’re also very excited to be progressing to the final stage before launch.”
Proba-3 is now due to be flown to India on Saturday 2 November, for a new launch date of 4 December.

Reflecting on the case and the marketing strategies of Corona and Heineken reveals a tale of two varied approaches, each with its unique implications in the competitive landscape of the beer market.
As I read the case- I kept comparing the dynamic nature of advertising and selling beer in the US. Having grown up in India- the nature of ads from alcohol companies were very different. My reflection highlights some of the areas where regulatory frameworks lead to innovative marketing tactics such as surrogate advertising.
Finally- I could not help but wonder what the impact of the pandemic was on a brand like Corona (for obvious reasons). I remember listening to a podcast back in the day about the ultimate positive effect the pandemic had on beer consumption in the US, and my final point covers that.
Corona and Heineken's Divergent Paths Corona’s growth in the U.S. market, challenging Heineken's long-standing dominance, serves as an example of how brand imagery and lifestyle alignment can reshape market dynamics. While Heineken has promoted its brand as a premium quality, heritage, and sophisticated one, Corona adopted a different strategy. Its marketing campaigns evoked a sense of relaxation, escapism, and the simple pleasures of life, epitomized by the iconic image of a lime-wedged bottle on a sun-drenched beach.
The Indian Context: Surrogate Marketing Turning to the Indian market, where direct advertising of alcoholic beverages is prohibited, brands have resorted to surrogate marketing to make their presence felt in the consumers' minds. Companies promote products that share the brand name with the alcoholic beverage, such as music CDs, water, or even airlines, thereby maintaining brand recall.
For long, some of the funniest and most memorable ads, usually came from such brands. This strategy, while requiring creativity and indirect messaging, highlights the complex interplay between regulatory environments and marketing innovation, allowing brands to build a presence in a market with strict advertising restrictions. (Alcohol brand selling "Music CDs": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zhozmQCDYg&pp=ygUdbWVuIHdpbGwgYmUgbWVuIGltcGVyaWFsIGJsdWU%3D)
Lately, many brands have launched zero-alcohol products, using these as surrogates to gain market popularity. Heineken was definitely the winner in the Indian market – from my recollection, I never saw a Corona ad.
Any publicity is good publicity? - True for Corona!
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges particularly for a brand like Corona, given the unfortunate name association. Despite initial setbacks and market confusion (with rumors rife with association to the virus), Corona's marketing strategy demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Research suggested that the brand's visibility and consumer loyalty contributed to this growth, with each new COVID-19 case seemingly boosting Corona's sales by $5.30 weekly compared to other major beer brands. The article mentioned that Corona beer gained "accidental popularity" due to its name's association with the coronavirus, driving increased attention and sales during the pandemic. Proba-3's laser-precise positioning by European Space Agency Via Flickr: An infrared view of a laser-based test campaign – taking place at Redwire Space in Kruibeke, Belgium – which represents crucial preparation for ESA’s precision formation flying mission, Proba-3. Later this year, two satellites will be launched together into orbit to maintain formation relative to each other down to a few millimetres, creating an artificial solar eclipse in space. Proba-3’s ‘Occulter’ spacecraft will cast a shadow onto the other ‘Coronagraph’ spacecraft to block out the fiery face of the Sun and make the ghostly solar corona available for sustained observation for up to six hours per 19.5 hour orbit. However to maintain the position of a shadow just a few centimetres across on the Coronagraph satellite from the Occulter satellite around 150 m away, the two satellites rely on a suite of sensors, including intersatellite radio links, GNSS, visual imaging and – for the most precise positioning at closest range – a laser metrology (or ‘measurement of measurement’) system. This system will shoot a laser from the Occulter spacecraft toward a corner cube retroreflector placed on the face of the Coronagraph spacecraft for tracking of relative position and attitude (pointing direction), achieving millimetre precision. “To calibrate Proba-3’s laser metrology system, its performance was tested within the 60-m long Redwire cleanroom,” explains Damien Galano, Proba-3’s mission manager. “The Coronagraph’s laser was reflected off a retroreflector and the resulting positioning measurements checked against absolute ‘ground truth’ using a separate laser tracking system.” This mission is being put together for ESA by a consortium led by Spain’s Sener, with participation by more than 29 companies from 14 countries. The Proba-3 platforms have been designed by Airbus Defence and Space in Spain and satellite integration by Redwire in Belgium. GMV in Spain is responsible for Proba-3’s formation flying subsystem while its main coronagraph instrument comes from Belgium’s Centre Spatial de Liège, CSL. Proba-3 is due to be launched by PSLV-XL launcher from India in September. Credits: ESA - M. Pédoussaut

10 Weird Phenomena Unleashed During a Solar Eclipse: A Prelude to North America’s “Ring of Fire”
As celestial bodies choreograph their cosmic dance, every now and then they align in a way that captivates onlookers from below. Solar eclipses, one of nature’s most theatrical displays, never cease to enchant. Tomorrow, on October 14, 2023, parts of North America will stand witness to an awe-inspiring “ring of fire” eclipse. As the moon slides between the sun and the Earth, it will craft a fiery halo, leaving spectators in awe. But apart from the visual spectacle, solar eclipses tend to unleash a range of peculiar phenomena. Here are ten weird things associated with solar eclipses, underscoring the oddities that occur when day momentarily turns into night.
1. Animal Behavior Alterations
Various species exhibit bewildering behavior during solar eclipses. For instance, birds may cease flying and seek refuge in nests, while daytime insects like bees and butterflies might be seen heading back to their shelters. Nocturnal animals could become active, deceived by the sudden darkness. Observations of such responses underscore the keen sensitivity of fauna to light and celestial events.
2. Shifting Shadows
As the moon inches over the sun, the usual shadows transform. They might appear sharper initially, but as the eclipse approaches its peak, unusual shadow patterns emerge. The gaps between leaves act as pinhole cameras, projecting mini crescent suns on the ground below.
3. Temperature Drop
The sun’s temporary concealment results in a noticeable temperature drop, often referred to as eclipse cooling. The extent of cooling depends on various factors including the time of year, geographic location, and eclipse magnitude. It’s a natural reminder of our constant reliance on solar warmth.
4. Baily’s Beads
Named after British astronomer Francis Baily, this phenomenon occurs when the moon’s jagged terrain allows beads of sunlight to seep through in some places while blocking others. It creates a visual akin to a string of glowing beads around the moon’s silhouette.
5. Solar Eclipse Wind
The sudden cooling during an eclipse often induces a change in wind direction and speed, creating a peculiar wind known as eclipse wind. It’s believed to result from variations in atmospheric pressure and temperature caused by the eclipse.
6. Shadow Bands
These elusive, snake-like bands of alternating light and dark slither across the ground immediately before and after totality. It’s believed that they are caused by the Earth’s atmosphere scattering the rapidly diminishing sunlight.
7. Diamond Ring Effect
A breathtaking sight where, for a fleeting moment, a single bead of sunlight remains visible as the moon covers the sun. This “diamond” sits atop a ring formed by the corona, creating the illusion of a diamond ring in the sky.
8. Corona Unveiling
The solar corona, characterized by its ethereal, wispy strands of light, is the sun’s outer atmosphere which is usually obscured by the sun’s bright surface. During totality, spectators are treated to a rare, splendid view of the corona which can stretch out for millions of miles into space.
9. Gravity Anomalies
Some studies have reported slight gravitational anomalies during solar eclipses. For instance, during the 1954 solar eclipse, a pendulum experiment in India recorded anomalous behavior. However, the phenomenon is not well understood and remains a topic of active research.
10. Enhanced Galactic Sightings
The temporary nightfall brought about by a solar eclipse allows for a brief but spectacular visibility of stars and planets normally hidden by daylight. This fleeting glimpse into the cosmos provides a wider perspective of our position in the galaxy.
Conclusion
The “ring of fire” eclipse is not merely a visual marvel, but a trigger for a myriad of bizarre phenomena that remind us of the intricate and sometimes peculiar ties between celestial bodies and our home planet. As the sky darkens momentarily, the curtain lifts, unveiling a brief act of oddities that celebrate the endless wonders of the cosmos. So, as you step out to witness the eclipse, you’re not just observing a celestial alignment, but becoming part of a tradition of awe and wonder that has persisted through the ages.

Aperçu of the Week:
"Music is a language in which you can't lie."
(Hubert von Goisern, Austrian singer-songwriter and founder of alpine rock)
Bad News of the Week:
The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is upon us again. This weather phenomenon of the equatorial Pacific happens at irregular intervals of two to eight years and refers to the occurrence of unusual, non-cyclical, altered ocean currents in the oceanographic-meteorological system. Without going into detail about Walker cells, trade winds and surface waters, let's just say that the weather between South America and Southeast Asia is tipping. With worldwide effects.
Plankton dies en masse and leads to the collapse of entire food chains, e.g. there are no more fish off Peru, seabirds die in the entire Pacific. Unnaturally heavy rainfall on the western side of the Andes causes landslides and flooding. In Southeast Asia and Australia, the lack of rain causes huge bush and forest fires, and the Amazon region and southern Africa dry out. Huge hurricanes develop in Mexico, the monsoon intensifies in India, and coral bleaching increases significantly worldwide. Everywhere it becomes noticeably warmer.
El Niño has already been documented by the pre-Columbian Incas and is even believed to have led to the extinction of the Moche civilization. It is therefore a natural phenomenon for which, for once, humans are not to blame. However, since man-made climate disasters such as floods, hurricanes and forest fires have increased dramatically in recent years, more than a few experts expect a reciprocal amplification that could be devastating due to its cascading effect. In the best case, humanity gets a temporary taste of circumstances to come, hopefully leading to more immediate action to mitigate climate change impacts. At worst, this heated combination pushes climatic tipping points past their very tipping point. Which, as we know, is irreversible.
Good News of the Week:
The annual G7 summit is over. This time under Japanese leadership in Hiroshima. This cooperation format of the seven economically strongest Western nations (Japan, USA, Canada, France, Great Britain, Italy and Germany) with the participation of the European Union originally saw itself as a forum for discussing issues of the global economy. And in recent years, it has evolved into a hub that also has security and sociopolitical relevance. Therefore, an unsurprising item on the program this year was the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenski to promote fighter jets.
Just as predictable as the condemnation of Russia's war of aggression was the theme of economic cooperation with China while distancing oneself from its geopolitical and human rights positions. The same applies to concerns about climate change, declining biodiversity and the too-slow expansion of renewable energies - albeit without any significant breakthroughs. Also, security of supply in globalized trade and cooperation with emerging economic powers. So no surprises at all?
Yes, in my opinion there are. After the delivery chain issues at the time of the Corona pandemic, the grain exports from Ukraine and fertilizers from Russia, which have been stopped in the meantime, have thrown another spotlight on the global food situation. Which is shitty to say the least. Among other things, because it is precisely the poorest countries that are most affected by the effects of climate change that are already being felt today.
Last year, under German auspices, the G7 and the World Bank founded the Global Alliance for Food Security (GAFS). According to its statutes, the alliance is committed to an agile, targeted and rapid response to food crises, which at the same time takes the right path toward sustainable agricultural systems. And pools the corresponding resources of its members: Germany, for example, has already been giving 2 billion euros annually for years to fight hunger in needy countries.
Now, according to a communiqué, the G7 have decided to provide a further 21 billion U.S. dollars in emergency aid. German Development Minister Svenja Schulze, initiator of the GAFS, commented: "The fact that the G7 are now united in their commitment to a further and holistic commitment one year later is a strong sign of solidarity with the Global South."
Of course, this is not enough. Oxfam, for example, points out that the UN has put the financial requirement in this regard at 55 billion. The G7 would have therefore failed in terms of development policy. But if you take a look at the bare figures, you will see that the G7 are contributing their fair share according to their economic performance. I am not aware of any corresponding initiative by China, India, Russia, Brazil or the Arab world. So we are on track so far. At least we are. And at least on a topic that too rarely makes it into the headlines.
Personal happy moment of the week:
My two children are getting older - and on their own feet. First, my daughter, who just turned 20, was in Budapest with the political science department of her university. Although only in her first year of study already as a group leader. And then my son, who just turned 15, was at the partner school in Paris. As the only one from the 8th grade and the youngest participant of the student exchange. Both not only completed their trip with aplomb, but also took the opportunity to present themselves as cosmopolitan, curious, self-confident young people. And made their dad proud.
I couldn't care less...
...about the voting behavior of Turks in Germany. Because they are allowed to vote in their home country, even if they are resident abroad. And they do. In large numbers. Unfortunately, two-thirds for Recep Erdogan. That was the case in the regular presidential election a week ago and that will be the case in the runoff election a week from now. I do not understand that. People who live in a well developed prosperous democracy should actually appreciate its canon of values - and not keep an autocrat in power.
As I write this...
...I am sitting on the train to Cologne. As I or my employer had booked it. Which is no longer a matter of course in view of the frequent strikes lately. The next round of negotiations between the union and Deutsche Bahn is scheduled for the day after tomorrow, so my return trip should also work out that day. On schedule. Which is tantamount to being late. Right now, we've been theoretically on the move for 12 minutes - but we're still standing on the platform in Munich. So everything is completely normal.
Post Scriptum
The Arab League has welcomed Syria's ruler Bashar al-Assad back into its midst - with a brotherly kiss. Those who were still waiting for proof that human rights do not always feel at home in the Arab cultural area (to put it mildly) now have it. The greeting "Salam alaikum" means "(May) peace be upon you". Yeah - but some terms and conditions apply.

TOP SEXOLOGIST FOR PARAPHIMOSIS TREATMENT IN DELHI - Top Doctor for Paraphimosis Treatment in Delhi, Best Doctors For Paraphimosis in India
INTRODUCTION TO PARAPHIMOSIS :
Surgery is not always the only option for many diseases, even when most doctors advise surgery. This is because different systems of medicine follow different treatment strategies. Ayurvedic treatment is, by far, the most comprehensive and holistic system of medicine. It treats the disease right from the root, both internally and externally. While most other medicine methods try to manage the condition by providing quick relief from symptoms, Ayurveda aims to cure the condition.
Paraphimosis can be effectively treated with Ayurveda without any surgery. Provided the treatment should be done by Ayurvedic doctors who are experts in treating Paraphimosis. Dr Manu Rajput and Dr Kanu Rajput of Sidri International are experienced ayurvedic sexologists in Delhi, Gurgaon and NCR-region for treating Paraphimosis without surgery.
PARAPHIMOSIS :
TOP SEXOLOGIST FOR PARAPHIMOSIS TREATMENT IN DELHI Paraphimosis is considered a severe medical condition and requires immediate medical intervention. Paraphimosis arises when the foreskin is stuck behind the glans penis and does not reach the normal position. A stuck foreskin may lead to swelling, which disrupts the blood flow to the tip of the penis. Delay in treatment may lead to severe complications, including gangrene and damage or complete loss of the glans penis.
The condition should not be confused with Phimosis, a relatively non-serious state in which the foreskin cannot pull back from the glans penis.
When the foreskin of the penis stays around the corona for an extended period, a group of tissues exert pressure on the penis. This pressure reduces the venous blood flow and lymphatic flow from the prepuce and penis.
Best Sexologist in india This condition leads to oedema of the glans. Oedema further pressurizes the penis, and the situation worsens, affecting arterial blood flow. This leads to oedema, tissue necrosis, gangrene and, ultimately, amputation.
SYMPTOMS OF PARAPHIMOSIS
Following are the symptoms experienced by the person suffering from Paraphimosis:
Retracted foreskin: The patient has a retracted foreskin in the form of a band that lies just beneath the glans. In Paraphimosis, the penis foreskin is stuck behind.
Urinary disorder: Patient suffering from Paraphimosis has difficulty in urination. Urinary retention is a common problem found in these patients.
best sexologist in delhi  Penile pain: Due to the retraction of the foreskin, the patient experiences pain in the penile region.
Swelling: The glans of the patient is swollen, although no swelling is present in the shaft of the penis. In Paraphimosis, the swollen foreskin is not returning to its normal position.
Erythema and tenderness: The patient also experience erythema and tenderness in the region where the foreskin is restricted. This increases discomfort in patients.
Necrosis: As the blood supply is reduced or prevented due to the band of tissues, black tissue starts to appear on the glans. This may indicate the presence of necrosis.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is taking a bold step to make solar eclipses more accessible-at least for their instruments. 😮
Launching Thursday from India, the Proba-3 mission will send two spacecraft into orbit to create "eclipses on demand."
Tumblr media
By flying in precise formation, one satellite will block the sun's light while the other observes the corona, the sun's faint outer atmosphere, for extended periods.
The satellites will ride India's PSLV-XL rocket, with coverage available on ESA Web TV and ISRO's YouTube channel. After reaching their orbital position 60,000 km above Earth in four months, the pair will align 150 km apart to simulate eclipses, promising unprecedented insights into the sun-and stunning imagery to share with Earth.

Eclipse-making double satellite Proba-3 enters orbit
A pair of spacecraft were launched together today from India with the potential to change the nature of future space missions. ESA’s twin Proba-3 platforms will perform precise formation flying down to a single millimetre, as if they were one single giant spacecraft. To demonstrate their degree of control, the pair will produce artificial solar eclipses in orbit, giving prolonged views of the Sun’s ghostly surrounding atmosphere, the corona.
Fourteen ESA Member States including Canada came together on this mission, set to demonstrate game-changing European technology in the areas of autonomous operations and precision manoeuvring by delivering never-before-seen science results.
Proba-3 lifted off on a four-stage PSLV-XL rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India, on Thursday, 5 December, at 11:34 CET (10:34 GMT, 16:04 local time). Stacked together, the two satellites separated from their upper stage about 18 minutes after launch.
The pair will remain attached together while initial commissioning takes place, overseen from mission control at the European Space Security and Education Centre, ESEC, in Redu, Belgium.
Dietmar Pilz, ESA Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality notes, “Proba-3 has been many years in the making, supported through ESA’s General Support Technology Programme fostering novel technologies for space. It is an exciting feeling to see this challenging enterprise enter orbit.”
Proba-3 mission manager Damien Galano adds, “Today’s liftoff has been something all of us in ESA’s Proba-3 team and our industrial and scientific partners have been looking forward to for a long time. I’m grateful to ISRO for this picture-perfect ascent to orbit. Now the hard work really begins, because to achieve Proba-3’s mission goals, the two satellites need to achieve positioning accuracy down to the thickness of the average fingernail while positioned one and a half football pitches apart.”
“We are honoured that ESA entrusted NewSpace India Limited, NSIL, with its Proba-3 mission, and we are extremely satisfied to have delivered the satellites precisely into their designated orbit,” remarked Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and Managing Director of NSIL. “This is an extremely ambitious mission, with an ambitious orbit to go with it: the satellites have been placed into a highly elliptical orbit which extends more than 60 500 km from the surface of Earth. Reaching this orbit required the most powerful PSLV-XL variant of our launcher, equipped with additional propellant in its six solid rocket boosters.”
Up around the top of their orbits the Proba-3 Occulter spacecraft will cast a precisely controlled shadow onto the Coronagraph spacecraft around 150 m away, to produce solar eclipses on demand for six hours at a time.
“There was simply no other way of reaching the optical performance Proba-3 requires than by having its occulting disc fly on a separate, carefully controlled spacecraft,” explains ESA’s Proba-3 mission scientist Joe Zender. “Any closer and unwanted stray light would spill over the edges of the disc, limiting our close-up views of the Sun’s surrounding corona.”
“Despite its faintness, the solar corona is an important element of our Solar System, larger in expanse than the Sun itself, and the source of space weather and the solar wind,” explains Andrei Zhukov of the Royal Observatory of Belgium, Principal Investigator for Proba-3’s ASPIICS (Association of Spacecraft for Polarimetry and Imaging Investigation of the Corona of the Sun) coronagraph.
“At the moment we can image the Sun in extreme ultraviolet to image the solar disc and the low corona, while using Earth- and space-based coronagraphs to monitor the high corona. That leaves a significant observing gap, from about three solar radii down to 1.1 solar radii, that Proba-3 will be able to fill. This will make it possible, for example, to follow the evolution of the colossal solar explosions called Coronal Mass Ejections as they rise from the solar surface and the outward acceleration of the solar wind.”
ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher commented, “Proba-3’s coronal observations will take place as part of a larger in-orbit demonstration of precise formation flying. The best way to prove this new European technology works as intended is to produce novel science data that nobody has ever seen before.
“It is not practical today to fly a single 150-m long spacecraft in orbit, but if Proba-3 can indeed achieve an equivalent performance using two small spacecraft, the mission will open up new ways of working in space for the future. Imagine multiple small platforms working together as one to form far-seeing virtual telescopes or arrays.”
If Proba-3’s initial commissioning phase goes to plan then the spacecraft pair will be separated early in the new year to begin their individual check-outs. The operational phase of the mission, including the first observations of the corona through active formation flying, should begin in about four months.
Proba-3 was led for ESA by Sener in Spain, overseeing a consortium of 14 ESA Member States and Canada includingAirbus Defence and Space in Spain manufacturing the spacecraft and Redwire Space in Belgium responsible for the spacecraft avionics, assembly and operations. CSL in Belgium produced Proba-3’s ASPIICS coronagraph Spacebel in Belgium developed the onboard and ground segment software with GMV being responsible for the formation flying system and flight dynamics.

Analysts project continued growth in the company's share price, supported by its strong fundamentals and proactive approach to market changes. As the company continues to innovate and expand, it is likely to attract further investment interest.
Conclusion Anheuser-Busch InBev's skyrocketing share price is a testament to its strategic acumen, financial strength, and commitment to innovation and sustainability. The company's ability to navigate market dynamics, expand its global footprint, and diversify its product offerings has positioned it as a leader in the beverage industry. For investors, AB InBev represents a compelling opportunity, backed by a solid track record and a promising outlook for future growth.

NURSING UNIVERSITY: Tamil Nadu's next expectation!
தமிழில்
Tamil Nadu's educational development received national attention. Our achievements in medical education are also proud. Tamil Nadu has the highest number of medical colleges in the country with 69. As the next milestone, there is an expectation that a Nursing University will also be established in Tamil Nadu.
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, a university can start if it has 100 colleges and graduates 5,000 students annually. In that way, Tamil Nadu was fully qualified many years before the establishment of Nursing University. Establishing such a university is the imperative of time.
TAMIL NADU AND NURSING:
The bond between Tamil Nadu and nurses is very deep. The first nursing school in Southeast Asia was started in Tamil Nadu in 1864. That is the MMC College of Nursing, which stands majestically near the Central Railway Station today. The first Nursing degree in India was introduced in 1946 at Vellore Christian Medical College.
Tamil Nadu has the highest number of Registered Nurses and Maternity Nurses in India (2,87,897); There are also 321 nurses who have completed doctorate degrees in Tamil Nadu. Also, Tamil Nadu ranks second after Kerala in the number of nurses who work abroad from India.
There are currently 241 Nursing Colleges, 193 Nursing Schools and 79 Nursing Assistant Schools in Tamil Nadu both government and private. All these together have a total of 84,000 nursing students. The University of Nursing will provide them with new courses and jobs suitable for their studies.
Next, there are 1,60,000 nurses working in government and private hospitals across Tamil Nadu. The University of Nursing will also create opportunities for them for further studies and improve their quality of life.
NEED FOR UNIVERSITY OF NURSING: Medical experts categorize the development of the nursing field worldwide as before and after the corona pandemic. The perception of nursing as a sub-discipline within the medical field is now beginning to change. The number of younger generations opting for nursing has also increased.
According to WHO guidelines, there should be one doctor per 1,000 people. But in that we have gone many steps ahead and created one doctor for 250 people. The World Health Organization's guidelines for these same nurses state that there should be three nurses per 1,000 people.
But the number of nurses in Tamil Nadu is only 1.5 per 1,000 people. Universities in Tamil Nadu refuse to give nursing colleges the importance they give to medical colleges and Siddha colleges. Dr. M.G.R. The governing council of the Medical University is the main decision-making body for nursing education across Tamil Nadu.
However, nurses have not yet been given any decision-making responsibility. Of the 14 members of the committee, only two are nurses. Therefore, there is an environment where doctors take decisions related to nurses without consulting them. There is a high demand for nurses in different fields like geriatric nursing, oncology nursing.
Hence, specialized nursing courses are also important for Tamil Nadu. Obstetrical nurses are the ones who do the important work of taking care of deliveries. But now it is not so easy for a Tamilnadu nurse to reach this position of maternity nurse.
A nurse can become a maternity nurse by first completing a BSc Nursing degree (4 years) or a Nursing Diploma (3 years), followed by two years of experience in Obstetrics and almost eight years.
Fearful of this, many nurses hold back from attempting to qualify as maternity nurses. As a result, Tamil Nadu has become the lowest state in India with only 46% of healthy births. If the University of Nursing brings, we can directly bring BSc Midwifery, a three-year course.
Nursing training institutes without formal recognition have sprung up in many places in Tamil Nadu. These institutes tend to divert students who are interested in nursing by offering six months training and one year training.
Both BSc Nursing and Diploma in Nursing are recognized as 'Registered Nurses'. There are many problems with this too.
Where to set up? - A British woman named Lali Seemati donated a few acres of land near Egmore, Chennai to the then Madras Provincial Government for the development of Tamil Nadu nurses. At this place now 'Lali Seemati Nurses Hostel' has been set up in her name.
But the nurses feel that this is not a step towards fulfilling the dream of a self-sacrificing person like Lali Seemati. So, in proper respect to her dream, a nursing university can be set up at that place.
Tamil Nadu is a model state in providing benefits to nurses. Also, the establishment of a new Nursing University in Tamilnadu will be the next step for Tamilnadu medical field!
