From its roots in the development of printing, graphic design has evolved as a means of identification, information, and promotion to become a profession and discipline in its own right.
This authoritative documentary history begins with the poster and goes on to chart the development of word and image in brochures and magazines, advertising, corporate identity, television, and electronic media, and the impact of technical innovations such as photography and the computer. For the revised edition, a new final chapter covers all the recent international developments in graphic design, including the role of the computer and the Internet in design innovation and globalization. In the last years of the twentieth century, at a time when “designer products” and the use of logos grew in importance, the role of graphic designers became more complex, subversive, and sometimes more political―witness Oliviero Toscani’s notorious advertisements for Benetton. Digital technology cleared the way for an astonishing proliferation of new typefaces, and words began to take second place to typography in a whole range of magazines and books as designers asserted the primacy of their medium. Designers and companies discussed here include Neville Brody, David Carson, Design Writing Research, Edward Fella, Tibor Kalman, Jeffery Keedy, LettError, Pierre di Sciullo, Tomato, Gerard Unger, Cornel Windlin, and a host of others. Over 800 illustrations, 30 in colorUsed Book in Good Condition

129 /Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec: Work by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec (2012) 303 pg
Ronan (born 1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (born 1976) are both brothers and designers based in Paris. They have been working together for fifteen years by their distinct personalities. Their studio is based in Paris and their team numbers around six people. In 1997, they were spotted by Cappellini, giving them their first industrial design projects. They started working with the Kreo Gallery in 2000 and had their first solo show there in 2001. Issey Miyake then hired them to design the new house "A-Poc". They are then Rolf Felhbaum, President of Vitra, and worked on a new office system entitled "Joyn". Since then they have gone to work with Artek, Alessi, Axor Hansgrohe, Cappellini, Established & Sons, Flos, Hay, Kettal, Kvadrat, Kartell, Glas Italia, Ligne Roset, Magis, Iittala, Mattiazzi, Mutina, Nani Marquina, Samsung and Vitra. Their work has covered many of the fields of architecture, from craftsmanship to industrial scale, from drawings to videos and photography. The designers also maintain an experimental activity with Gallery kreo, which is also essential to the development of their work. The Museum of Modern Art - Pompidou Center and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Design Museum in London, and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Several monographs have been devoted to their work: "Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec" at the Design Museum, London (2002) and "Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Vitra Design Museum (2012) and "Bivouac" at the Center Pompidou Metz (2011) and then at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (2012-2013). In 2013, the Arts Décoratifs, Paris presented "Momentané" and more recently they presented "17 Screens" at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2015). In 2016, the city of Rennes shows their latest researches in 4 exhibitions in three different places (Frac Brittany, Champs Libres and the Parliament of Brittany). A special website has been conceived for the occasion: www.bouroullec.com/press Until January 22, The Vitra Design Museum showcased the exhibition Reveries Urbaines. A comprehensive monograph was released in 2012, Works, Phaidon Press. In 2013, under the art direction of Cornel Windlin, JRP Ringier published a 864-page paperback book called Drawing that collects more than 850 drawings that Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec made between 2005 and 2012. In the past two monographs have been published: Ronan And Erwan Bouroullec, published by Phaidon Press (2003) and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec - Catalog of Reason (Paris: Modern Images / kreo, 2002).

The four images of modern typographic layouts in spreads shown here are from the following books: Corporate Diversity (Swiss Graphic Design and Advertising) by Geigy Altitude (Contemporary Swiss Graphic Design) edited by Robert Klanten, Nicolas Bourquin, Claudia Mareis Swiss Design by Dorian Lucas On the spread from Corporate Diversity: Body typeface - “Replica” by www.lineto.com (San Serif) These were identified in the colophon. On the spread from Altitude: Body typeface - “La Police” by Francois Rappo (San Serif) Display typeface - “Gravur Condensed” by Cornel Windlin (San Serif) These were identified in the colophon. On the spreads from Swiss Design: I believe the display typeface is “Helvetica”, and the body typeface is a type of typewriter serif font. Unfortunately, these were not identified in the colophon but under my trained eye for typography. The four spreads I selected from these three books are excellent examples of the modern typographic layout. Each spread has the tell all signs of the modern layout: asymmetry, use of white space, san serif typefaces, and flush left rag right typeset paragraphs. Each of these layouts are interesting in their own reguard. I always find myself struggling with the grid, and by viewing more and more books with examples I become more comfortable with it. To see that other designers have successfully made grids and made them well is so inspiring for me. Viewing all of the different and endless types of modern layouts will continue to inspire my work for years to come. The grid on all of them is evident and I believe they would all be very exciting to deconstruct. — Kayla Shay Roebuck
