"To mark the birth of their first child, Sienna, in 2018, Kevin and Kelly Williams planted a tangerine tree in their Lahaina yard. When their second child Malia arrived in 2020, they added a lime tree.
But the trees never had a chance to bear fruit before the Aug. 8, 2023 wildfire destroyed them, along with the Williams family’s home, their property management business and most of the town.
Now, on their new property in Ukumehame about 15 minutes south of Lahaina, the family is growing a much bigger bounty — about 220 trees, all native species, that one day will return to the backyards of families like theirs.
“Absolutely amazing to be able to think one day we can drive through Lahaina and see the trees that we helped raise,” Kevin Williams said.
Over the past year and a half, a sprawling network of volunteers, local farmers, nurseries and hotels have stepped up to host thousands of young trees growing in pots that will be replanted in Lahaina through the Treecovery Hawai‘i project.
Since launching in November 2023, the initiative has bloomed into 6,200 trees being cared for at 25 grow hubs, with about 160 already replanted at the handful of homes that have been rebuilt in Lahaina and Kula. While displaced families focus on returning to their homes, the volunteers are making sure the trees and the soil are nurtured and ready to shade and feed the community for years to come.
“It really does a lot to people’s minds and hearts when they see growth and they see that rebirth of the land,” said Duane Sparkman, founder and president of Treecovery and chair of the Maui County Arborist Committee. “Restoring the ‘āina from the soil up is what we have to do.”
THE ROOTS
When 59-year-old Ekolu Lindsey talks to relatives from his dad’s generation about Lahaina, the smell of mangos comes to mind. Everyone had their favorite fruit trees in Lahaina, and oftentimes they were the ones in their own yards, said Lindsey, who lost his Front Street home in the fire.
“All those stories, it’s the memories of home. It’s all part of who we are as people,” said Lindsey, a Treecovery board member and head of Maui Cultural Lands, a nonprofit that works to protect and restore Hawaiian resources across the island.
Lahaina was historically home to a canopy of fruit trees, including breadfruit, which gave rise to the name Malu ‘Ulu o Lele, “the shaded breadfruit grove of Lele.” They helped create a cooler climate, capture rainwater and mitigate soil erosion, independent researcher Adam Keawe Manalo-Camp wrote in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ “Ka Wai Ola” publication. The removal of breadfruit trees and diversion of streams to pave the way for sugar cane production in the mid-1800s dried up the once productive landscape and opened the door for invasive species.
The 2023 fire again razed the trees of Lahaina — about 21,000, according to Treecovery’s estimates — and burned so hot that it likely killed microbes in the soil as deep as 18 inches underground, Sparkman said. In Kula and Lahaina, federal workers scraped 6 inches of soil off the top of each property and tested it for contaminants before people were allowed to rebuild.
Struck by how barren the land was, Sparkman and his team launched Treecovery with the goal of growing 30,000 trees to replace what Lahaina lost. Lindsey sits on the board along with Matthew Murasko, Rodger May and cultural adviser Archie Kalepa.
The idea was to establish grow hubs where trees could be nurtured until residents were ready to plant. The Royal Lahaina Resort, where Sparkman is the chief engineer, served as a staging site before the very first grow hub opened with 125 fruit tree saplings at the Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club in April 2024.
The network grew to nearly every corner of the island, from the Kā‘anapali Beach Resort to the Fairmont Kea Lani to the Kahului Airport and independent growers in East Maui. It’s a labor of love where the on-site workers or volunteers water, weed and transfer the plants to larger pots as they grow.
Treecovery takes requests for trees on their website, buys them from local nurseries and transports them to the grow hubs where they are cared for and labeled with the names of the families they will be donated to, according to Murasko, an entrepreneur, product designer and brand builder who met Sparkman while volunteering in Honokōwai Valley 17 years ago. Murasko said they’ve raised about $600,000 and that they pay full price for the trees and pots to help support local businesses. The trees cost about $100 each but can get as expensive as $2,000 for a 65-gallon mango tree or $3,000 to move and install a large palm tree, Sparkman said.
There are a variety of trees, including native species like koai‘a and ‘a‘ali‘i; fruit trees like Mapulehu mango, dwarf avocado, peach and citrus; and flowering trees such as plumeria and puakenikeni...
Sparkman, a longtime landscaper and former scientific biological technician at Haleakalā National Park who has been honored for his organic landscaping practices, said Treecovery wants to return the natural system of healthy microbes into the soil.
The steady recovery of the iconic 150-year-old banyan tree is proof that it can work. Sparkman said it’s grown “leaps and bounds” more than they expected with the help of 500 gallons of microbial life, rich with fungi and bacteria that trees need and pests can’t survive in.
“It takes years for nature to put it back, but man can help it by pulling these indigenous microbes and moving it for nature,” he said.""

Hi. You know what I wanna see in the new Tomodachi Life? Of course you do. I've been cooking this list for ten years.
Mii Customization
A makeup system similar to Miitopia's, if not the exact same one, is essential. While I personally still want my Miis to look like Miis, it feels pretty crucial to have those kinds of makeup options even for just Miis. Being able to share them is also a must. Bonus if we get tattoos.
It seems like we're getting new hairstyles, with an option to use an ombre gradient on them. I want them to go nuts. Different bangs options for certain hairstyles. Different ponytail/pigtail options. All kinds of different textures and styles. Anime-esque styles. Realistic styles. Textured hairstyles. Ahoge options like in Miitopia. Let me go apeshit.
Speaking of... Fantasy skintones. Customizable skintones, eye colors, and makeup colors. The skintones is a must for me, but I'm sure there are people out there who would LOVE to have that option too, to get their skintone just right, but also the skintones of their OCs and favorite characters.
Separated tops, bottoms, shoes, socks, hats, glasses, accessories, a la Miitomo, with more ability to customize their appearances. Bonus option: Allow people to make their own shirts and hoodies and such like in Animal Crossing, with a hub where you can share your creations with others. Bonus 2x if it uses the Miitopia makeup system and you can do all kinds of shapes.
Mii Personalities and Interactions
Traits a la Sims. The MBTI-based sliders were fine, but I want to mix and match traits, and I want those traits to mean something. I want those traits to heavily influence how a Mii reacts to situations, and not just influence their pose and funky things they say.
Memories. I want Miis to remember the fights they had, the good times and the bad (within reason), also like Sims. I want those memories to influence their relationships.
I need these motherfuckers to have cliques and friend groups and as complex of social lives as Nintendo can make them. I want to be able to make a graph of my Mii's relationships. And I want some influence over it, not just RNG. I personally don't want a TON of influence but I want some.
Yeah of course make them gay as shit. I'm not stupid of course I want gay Miis and queer Miis. I saw someone suggest opting out of relationships and babies and such and that's a damn fine idea too.
Not just traits, but preferences you can set. Likes the color red. Dislikes the smell of lemons. Loves horses. Dislikes corn. Likes goth clothes. Dislikes preppy outfits. Stuff like that.
Gameplay
I want to decorate each individual Mii apartment like in Animal Crossing. I want people to go apeshit nuts with furniture and whatnot. Complex builds. Some pre-determined rooms or room bases would be nice, and even just "you can put this thing in this room slot" would be fine too. Bonus if you can customize colors.
More group activities for Miis. More minigames and such. I actually haven't considered this one as much because I liked what we had and most of my desires are fine-tuning Miis, and we clearly already got it so the little guys can wander around outside.
But if they can wander outside I'd love more locations, more building types, more hangouts, more things to do.
Basically I need this to be the perfect ant farm of all the shit I like.
And that's a fairly complete list.

Han NSFW Alphabet
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
genre : suggestive smut, gender neutral reader
word count : 1477
warning : suggestive and some smutty content
A/N : Han is my bias so I had lots of fun with this, I'm sorry I took such a long break from writing, I hope you enjoy this addition to the NSFW collection.
After care :
Jisung's super goofy and loving, giving lots of kisses all over his partners face.  He'll give compliments and cuddle them tightly, he wants to make sure they feel loved, while keeping the mood light and fun.
Body (favourite body parts) :
He loves his hands, how they look on his partners body and when they hold his partners neck and face.  Jisung would love his partners booty, he'll rub it and praise them about how hot they are and hold onto it tightly during sex.
Cum :
Messy when he cums, he loves cream pies but only if his partner is on birth control or has a kind of contraceptive, or anal.
Dirty secret :
He hides how Horny he actually is because he thinks it would scare his partner if they knew how much he jerked off and thought dirty thoughts.  Until eventually him and his partner got close enough where he didn't hide it anymore.
Experience :
This man will brag about how he has alllll the experience in the world, he makes it sound like he's the sex expert, but in reality he is relying on the corn hub for his information, and when he actually gets to the down and dirty part, he'll get awkward and make jokes to cope.  Very little experience in other words.
Favourite Position :
Doggy style all night, he can grip his partners ass, pull on their hair, fuck them as hard and roughly as he can, and he finds that the position makes him cum the hardest, it also helps him reach his partners most sensitive spot inside.
Goofy :
Jisung is extremely goofy, especially when it comes to sex, he'll sneakily go in for a motto boat, he'll be teasing and laughing and it helps his partners relax as well if they're nervous or shy, he's easy going and thats what helps make him so lovable.
Hair :
Jisung will do a complete shave every couple of weeks, then let it grow out, it's a lot of work to keep it constantly shaved down, so he has a little routine going where he'll take everything off and then let it grow out, then repeat.
Intimacy :
King of PDA, from making cute faces to holding hands and cuddling on a bus ride to home, he will actively show affection to his partner no matter what.  He has his limits though, cute PDA is good with him, anything sexy or promiscuous would make him too embarrassed and awkward.
Jerk off:
He will find the time to do it every day at least once, maybe twice if he feels like it.  His sex drive is crazy and his horny levels are insane, so he's jerking off a lot which doesn't help his case.  Don't worry, he's not an addict.  Yet.
Kink:
He's not the most kinky out there, he has a few such as back scratched, he'll beg his partner to dig their nails into his back as he fucks them, as well as pet names and such.  He's pretty open to new things though.
Location:
Anywhere in the house with a solid surface.  You're taking a shower together?  He'll make you hold onto the wall for dear life.  In the kitchen making breakfast, prepare to be lifted onto that counter.  As long as there's no one else in the house Jisung will initiate something anywhere.
Motivation:
His motivation is his hormones, you could be sitting on the couch watching tv and turn him on.  His dick has a mind of its own, so in terms of motivation he will be motivated anytime there's an opportunity.
No :
Noooooo public sex, not for him and never will be, he'a a huge flirt but he also has his dignity he's not willing to risk just to get down and dirty.  He'll stay away from public spaces when it comes to naughty stuff, only closed off locked spaces will do.
Oral :
His best friend, hes a rapper his tongue knows how to move, he can do oral really well, and he also enjoys seeing your mouth wrapped around his dick as you suck him off.
Pace :
He can do any pace depending on the situation.  He's the master at quickies, and if it's slow and sensual you want he can do that too, but he might get carried away and fuck your brains out.
Quickies :
Jisung is down for a quickie anytime any day, his high sex drive needs tending and there's not always time to get sensual, quickies are his best friend.
Risk :
Is Ji the most risky person out there?  No, he'll get super embarrassed if someone were to walk in on something, so he keeps his risk fairly low just to keep SOME of his dignity.  But, he wouldn't be opposed to a quick blowjob under his studio desk to take his mind off his projects.
Stamina :
He has pretty good stamina, we've all heard him rap, his tongue can work miracles and he has enough stamina to make you cum on his face.  He can last around 15 minutes if it's slow and sensual, but if it's a quickie he'll get both him and his partner cumming in less than 5.
Toys :
He feels a but intimidated by them, he's 100% supportive if his partner wants to use them, but he'll get a bit scared if anything super extreme were to come out and be suggested.
Unfair :
He teases, I know he teases, you know he teases its a universal thing.  He'll be dangling sex in front of you like a feather toy to cats.  "Hmm, should I fuck you?  I don't think you'd like that.  I guess we won't fuck."  And other stuff like that.
Volume :
Jisung is vocal, he's not screaming or anything, but he can't help but mutter out a "Yes baby" or "You feel so good". He'll even let moans slip out of his mouth as he gets closer to his release.
Wild Card :
"Hey Ji, I'm here, I stopped by the convenience store as well."  I called out to my boyfriend as I entered the studio.  It was late and Jisung was stuck on a song he desperately wanted to finish.  He had texted me to come keep him company since Chan and Changbin had already went back to the dorm.
Jisung turned in his chair to face me and smiled widely.  "I'm so glad you're here!  This is killing me."  He fake cried and opened his arms for a hug.  I giggled at him and went over to hug him tightly.  I sat on his lap and he turned back to his computer.
I watched as he worked for a while, his shoulders would tense and then relax, and his face would scrunch and he'd hold his breath, eventually releasing it after finishing something.  He was super stressed, and I have an idea how to help him.
I got off his lap and slid under the desk, his face turned from confused to excited really quick.  "Baby, are you gonna..."
"Shh, keep working."  I interrupted him, he went back to his project, my hands went to the band of his sweatpants, tugging them down slowly, he lifted his butt so I was able to brings them down to his feet, his dick in his underwear was already starting to get hard, it was just too easy with him.
My hand gently rubbed his dick through his underwear, I could hear him let out a sigh as I pressed down lightly onto him.  My fingers teased at his underwear, slightly tugging them down just so his tip was showing, I brushed my thumb over it making him quiver slightly.
"I thought this was supposed to be a stress relief."  He jokingly said, his breath caught in his throat as I took his whole cock in my mouth.
X-ray :
Jisung gives off average dick energy.  He's my bias okay, so I'm being completely honest,  he doesn't have the biggest dick energy.  I'll give him 6 inches, with a bit more girth, but nothing crazy, he knows how to use it though, from all the jerking off.
Yearning :
He craves sex, we've been over this.  When it comes to sex drive he could make it from one side if Canada to the other.
Zzz :
Passes out right away, after they've finished, he'd wrap his arms around his partner and cuddled them to sleep, passing out right away.

Recent Chicago peice reminded me of the way Chicago north suburbs use military bases to divide and segregate in a manner that similarly matches connects to colonial actions. You always compile interesting stuff thank you.
Thank you for the kindness and support. I'm gonna riff on this a little bit. I'm sorry, I don't mean to distract from what you specifically brought up here.
Yea, we can add federal military base sites to the list of "innovations" Chicago has made in spatial arrangement (like, constructing nasty landscapes), specifically labor segregation (race-based) in service of wealth extraction. (For anyone following along, the article/essay we're discussing explores connections between plantations in US-occupied Philippines and the policing institutions and technologies of Chicago. More specifically, it's about white anxiety in Chicago, the fear and "anticipation" of Black migration from the South during Reconstruction and the Great Migration, and how between 1880-ish and 1910-ish Chicago then became a center of surveillance, records-keeping, body/mind classification systems, and new innovations in monitoring dissent and collecting information. The Adjutant General of the US Army who led Chicago's militarized crackdown on the labor rebellions of the 1877 Great Railroad Strike immediately moved to DC and proposed establishing "the Military Information Division" (MID); eventually founded in 1885, MID started collecting hundreds of thousands of Bertillon-system intelligence cards on dissidents and "criminals" across the US. Meanwhile, the National Association of Chiefs of Police headquartered their central bureau of identification in Chicago in 1896. In the author's telling, these policing beliefs and practices - including intelligence cards, "management sciences," and policing unit organization - were then "exported" by MID to the US-military-occupied Philippines and used to monitor labor and anticolonial dissent. Another Chicago guy, at the same time, developed "personality typing" and psychological evaluations, and then trained Philippines police forces to collect as much information as possible about colonial subjects. The information-gathering in the Philippines constituted what other scholars have called one of the United States' first "information revolutions," with this apparatus of knowledge-collection and surveillance being "capillaries of empire." These connections and arguments are made by Jolen Martinez, in 2024, "Plantation Anticipation: Apprehension in Chicago from Reconstruction America to the Plantocratic Philippines".)
So, Chicago is a funnel, right?
The node. The center of transportation networks. Extracted wealth channeled by the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River waterway, channeled by the Mississippi River corridor, channeled by the railroads acting as tendrils reaching out into westward into "the frontier". For the United States, Chicago was the gateway to "the West". Over the course of the past two centuries: Furs from trapped mammals in Canadian boreal forest shipped through the Great Lakes to French colonial benefactors. Mined metals from the Iron Ranges shipped through the ports. Timber from Minnesota shipped through the waterway. Cattle from Texas rangeland shipped, after the 1870s, along railroads to centrally meet together at massive Chicago meat processing facilities and industrial-scale slaughterhouses. Corn Belt agricultural produce from the tallgrass prairie ecoregion shipped to Chicago. And people, too. People diminished. People seen as resources. People as labor. People shipped to Chicago to work the processing centers, the railyards, the docks, the restaurant dish-pits. And so Chicago becomes a hub of the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. But Chicago was also a major destination for Black people moving away from the (post-)Reconstruction South. And because Chicago was a hub of labor unions, Black migration, telegraph and communications infrastructure, and significant industrial production, it also becomes a hub of policing.
Have you ever looked through an archive of all the extravagant promotional advertising illustrations for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, famously hosted by Chicago?
From the Gilded Age to the Roaring Twenties, Chicago achieves the pinnacle of its spectacular reputation with its image as a glistening modernist metropolis after the construction of the railroad networks. But even before the city itself was formally established, the wetlands where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan were kinda located in this general region that acts as a sort of bridge for French wealth, being both near the inland terminus of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence route while simultaneously also sitting near a sort of inland terminus of the Mississippi River route (kinda uniting French Canadian fur trade and Ontario/Quebec settlement with French "Caribbean" plantations and New Orleans).
I think about how suburbanization, and its attendant racial segregation, is especially blatant in something I kinda think of as "the southern Great Lakes industrial corridor and its economically, ecologically, (settler-)culturally similar satellites" (Columbus, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis, etc.). Some writing on this, which you might enjoy checking out if you haven't yet, is Phil Neel's work, particularly the book Hinterland (2018). Neel's book is largely about suburbs or suburbanization; the environmental construction of Midwestern cities as hubs of industrial extraction and racial segregation; and how these Chicago-esque traditions of designing physical space (whether it's residential, "rural", "urban", whatever) to best isolate/subdue people for extraction are now widespread and typical of US space in general.
It's now a template. As another example, Neel discusses how the "revitalized urban core" of Seattle's utopian "infotech metropolis" of tech companies is actually dependent on the corridor extending southward towards and past Tacoma, "this logistics empire" of "warehouses, food processing facilities, container trucks, rail yards, and industrial parks" while "the poor have been priced out" and "can also be found staffing the airport and the rail yards [...], loading boxes in warehouses [...]." It's why, in recent years, you hear about "workforce housing." Put a warehouse or big box store on the edge of town, then put nearly-inhospitable apartment complexes next-door, and you keep the poor at the periphery. Like a company town. Or kinda like creating a debt colony from which to draw vulnerable laborers. So that the power of such a major city and its economic might does not end at the technical city limit boundary, but extends beyond into the "rural" hinterland. (You can see this when looking up an "urban megaregion map".) And Great Lakes or "Midwest" cities were a sort of pioneer (excuse the term) of these techniques of labor compartmentalization.
Ferguson and St. Louis in 2014. Minneapolis and Louisville in 2020.
So maybe unsurprisingly, urban/neighborhood racial segregation is very ingrained/formalized in the Great Lakes cities. Chicago's Lake Michigan-based sibling Milwaukee is especially notorious (2018 research found Milwaukee had the most extreme Black-white segregation of any US city with a million or more people). Including banking, home-loan denial, insurance practices engineered specifically and efficiently to isolate/segregate/prey upon Black people (all kinds of academic research on on these practices).
Coincidentally, redlining ("other side of the tracks"), especially 1930s-1940s, made use of the region's many railroad tracks as physical barriers and hostile environments. So that the railroad infrastructure not only funneled wealth but also became actual, material obstacles. Weaponized landscape feature.
And part of why I liked Martinez's take on it was that we can see more evidence that Chicago's techniques of organizing space/life did not just establish ways of being in the Midwest, but also established ways of being across the United States. And we can kinda see that this power is not just physical/material.
I think Chicago is interesting, especially in the time period of the research we're talking about (1880-1910), because this Gilded Age, Edwardian era, turn-of-the-century-opulence kinda moment is sort of singularly important for (European) empire-building. British imperial power being exercised in Southeast and South Asia. The Scramble for Africa. French Algeria. European power reaching outwards. But it also corresponds to United States empire-building both domestically and globally. 1889/1890: Wounded Knee and "the closing of the frontier", the West has been won, from sea to shining sea, now the US thinks it owns the continent or whatever. And the US didn't waste any time. Immediately, the US moves on to Cuba, to Hawai'i, to the Philippines, to Panama, etc. And it's like, at first, to target Indigenous people and the Wild West, there are obvious physical/material reasons why Chicago (geographically, as a railroad and telegraph hub, as shipping hub) is like a homebase or an epicenter for westward expansion and domestic empire-building. But Chicago is not geographically a convenient hub of colonization abroad in Central America or the Philippines (it's not close to those locations, the railroads of Chicago don't reach Manila, etc.). And yet, what Martinez's work suggests is that in a very scary way Chicago still actually might've functioned as a hub of empire-building across the globe. Chicago was a place where the United States' imagination fermented. Ideas, imaginaries, beliefs. So that, maybe Chicago became not just a physical node, but an imaginative node, too. Chicago-style authority, police data-collection, and record-keeping inspired surveillance approaches across the United States. The ideologies, the "personality types", the filing cabinets, the "intelligence cards", were adopted elsewhere. What plantation owners and white Southerners believed and practiced in antebellum Louisiana was re-articulated by the specificity of Chicago; Gilded Age Chicago then would influence US domestic surveillance; and the US would then reach out and transport those beliefs and practices to affect the rest of the planet.

My words are: Fire, rain, thought, peace and within
Fire
Wingbeat and claws scraping stone caused her heart to drop into her stomach. Her guts twisted, and she hesitated to turn and raised her lantern. She brought it up, and the fire lit thin reflective stripes and the insides of membranous wings. Pale eyes looked back into hers and the inhuman ones contracted to pin points. Here she was… following in Mirkas footsteps. But, she was alone. The only company she had was her Pero and it wasn't much for conversation past a miserable warble when she gave it a scolding for chewing at the masonry.
Rain
closet. When she was young and scared of when the Anemoian lightning storms got bad, she would find herself in Mavros’ room. Mavros never seemed scared of such things. He was never scared. He’d get up to light the lantern on his bedside and invite her to share the covers. He held up a thin blanket so they could use it like a tent, and tell her the origin of the storms. The lightning was Lord Pinnas' love for his long gone wife and children, the thunder his battlecry, and the rain was his tears because he lost them; but it's okay because now he brings the rain to keep us fed, the thunder to sing us to sleep, and the lightning is sent through the heavens to guide us in the darkest nights.
Thought
Waves of soreness ran down his shoulder, down his spine, and into his hips and legs. If asked, he’d joke about awkward sex positions… if Mav was real for a moment, he would admit that he knew it was from how he was not moving for many hours at a time. He was not sick in a traditional sense anymore… Infections had cleared a while ago, so he told himself there was no reason for this. He should be up, he should be going hunting, and doing his self-defense practice, he should be playing with his son. Instead of getting up to resume life, he just screamed at himself instead when he wasn’t blackout drunk or so high he couldn’t feel his body let alone able to have a train of thought
Peace
Anemoi since its early life has remained a prolific farming and trade hub of the world. Warm weather, consistent rain, and incredibly fertile land allow it to create vast quantities of the world supply of cotton, corn, grain, rice, soybeans, sunflower, tobacco, gourds and other staples. Its grasses supplied livestock well. Its economy is probably the most stable, and it is known for attracting a large population from other kingdoms as it enjoys peace and prosperity.
Within
The plan was simple. Cripple Midonian morale, and then come in hard and heavy upon its land. This display made others nervous, and stirred the population of Anemoi. The political situation was already shaky, and with an insurgence of Midonian religious belief within the nation, a draft and then war?... It was utterly dire. Families were torn apart from the death and scarring of parents. Children orphaned and spouses angered. Xavier and the head knight Kurtys were off to Midonia to assert Anemoian dominance. With them they took many important men, cornerstones of the Aeraki castle…including Seane, Felix, Fluvius, and the majority of guards and knights. This left Mav to his own devices at home. Word of Castle Aeraki being vulnerable and dissent was under people's breath.

how do i do this again? oh yeh...
garden update // august 20th 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the pollinator garden that was literally a "toss seeds and see what happens shrug emoji" has officially reached covering-the-view'of-the-house stage. eventually over the course of this fall and winter we will add a fence and plant perennials instead of whatever annual flower seeds i had lying around. asters are popping up in the shade of them all which i find funny since asters prefer cooler weather.
Tumblr media
speaking of cooler weather... from the first bit of fall seeds i started i find the interesting germination contrast of saved seeds (not even my saved seeds, a friends) dwarf siberian kale versus bought online. the left was the saved seeds 📝👀 her's grew 10 minutes from my house, the one bought online was from a big boi store further up north. and these did hit 90°+ weather too, which technically was bad BUT not for the seeds that are all "yeh, we know how crazy this weather is nbd 😎"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my favorite basil ever, the spicy globe basil, is finally bolting for seed. i kept harvesting just one bush so i could get seeds sooner rather than later. okra is doing great, too. still giving off flowers and already got a first batch of dried okra for the seeds. i let the okra dry on the plant itself to ensure the most energy gets into those suckers as much as possible.

ok, so i'll start a separate thread for my quest for a frog pond, but i plan on putting it in the middle of the large square bed. everyone, even hubs, was like why big square you cant reach the middle and i was like it fits the space though!! but they were all right, hurts my back trying to reach the middle and tripping over the plants defeats the purpose. but it fits so nicely in the spot!! so frog pond will go in middle, around it is brassicas during the winter, then 2025 is purple tomatillo, 2026 is corn, 2027 okra, and then repeat indefinitely. so tall plants to shade it during the summer, and short plants so it gets plenty of sun in the winter. should be ok right?????? also i have yet to plant my prickly pear cactus because i legit dunno where to put them. i keep moving them around the garden and just not loving wherever they go. ughs.

peppers are almost done, so fall must be around the corner. but don't worry, tomorrow i'm going to dig up most of them and overwinter in the greenhouse. hawks claw totally, cayenne probably not because they had such stunted growth, lemon drop totally not because i have too many, but totes the giant marconi because that's my favorite sweet pepper so far. haven't tried many sweet pepper varieties though, and would love to grow an heirloom not a hybrid. my purple bells still haven't produced anything 😭 but i'll wait to pull those at the last minute... just in case...
lots to do this week. tomorrow is a false fall day, so going to spend it all outside and enjoy it 💚

So You Want to be a Corn Snake Breeder
Tip #4
Decide how you want to do business and tell your customers up front, in writing, what your expectations are. Peruse the policies of other shops and see what makes sense to you and what you feel you could improve. Examples of policies you'll need to establish are like when payment is due and what payment types you can accept, whether you ship or only do local meet-ups, the shipping carrier you use and whether you ship to residences or only pickup locations, whether or not you guarantee health or sex and how long a buyer has to make a claim should something go amiss, what happens if a buyer can't keep their snake a few years down the road, etc.
No policy is unreasonable as long as it's in writing and in plain language, but be aware that some seller policies may prevent potential buyers from wanting -or being able- to do business with you. Choices such as only shipping to FedEx hubs for pickup, requiring a photo of the future enclosure for your review, or even asking a buyer to sign a no-rehoming contract could be a deal breaker for some folks. Whether that's a pro or a con is up to you!

[In February, 2023], a small warehouse in the English city of Nottingham received the crucial final components for a project that leverages the power of used EV batteries to create a new kind of circular economy.
Inside, city authorities have installed 40 two-way electric vehicle chargers that are connected to solar panels and a pioneering battery energy storage system, which will together power a number of on-site facilities and a fleet of 200 municipal vehicles while simultaneously helping to decarbonize the UK’s electrical grid.
Each day Nottingham will send a combination of solar-generated energy — and whatever is left in the vehicles after the day’s use — from its storage devices into the national grid.  The so-called “vehicle to grid” chargers deliver this energy just when it’s needed most, during peak evening demand, when people are home cooking, using hot water or watching TV. Later, the same chargers pull energy from the grid to recharge the vehicles in the wee hours of the night, when folks are sleeping and electricity is cheaper and plentiful.
“We are trying to create a virtual power station,” says Steve Cornes, Nottingham City Council’s Technical Lead. “The solar power and battery storage will help us operate independently and outside of peak times, making our system more resilient and reducing stress on the national grid. We could even make a profit.” ...
After around a decade, an EV battery no longer provides sufficient performance for car journeys. However, they still can retain up to 80 percent of their original capacity, and with this great remaining power comes great reusability.
“As the batteries degrade, they lose their usefulness for vehicles,” says Matthew Lumsden, chairman of Connected Energy. “But batteries can be used for so many other things, and to not do so results in waste and more mining of natural resources.”
The E-STOR hubs come in the form of 20-foot modular containers, each one packed with 24 repurposed EV batteries from Renault cars. Each hub can provide up to 300kW of power, enough to provide energy to dozens of homes. One study by Lancaster University, commissioned by Connected Energy, calculated that a second life battery system saved 450 tons of CO2 per MWh over its lifetime...
Battery repurposing and recycling is set to play a massive role over the coming years as the automobile industry attempts to decarbonize and the world more broadly attempts to fight waste. The production of EVs, which use lithium-ion batteries, is accelerating. Tesla, for example, is aiming to sell 20 million EVs per year by 2030 — more than 13 times the current level. In turn, 12 million tons of EV batteries could become available for reuse by 2030, according to one estimate.
“Over the next decade we are going to see this gigantic wave,” says Jessica Dunn, a senior analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists. “Companies are recognizing this is a necessary industry. They need to ramp up infrastructure for recycling and reuse.”

All of my islands have - & will have - these 3 ducks. A few years ago, my husband & I temporarily "adopted" a trio of ducks (all male, 1 Rouen & 2 Pekin) that some asshat dumped in a park we walked at. They were purely domestic & unable to fly (& were pretty frantic), so we didn't feel badly about breaking the park rules about feeding* them while we waited for a rescue team to come (took a couple of months). The terrain was such that they barely had cover, and not a lot of access to resources. (There was just one spot where they could hop out of the water to get to the food we brought.)
We got really attached to these guys, and if we had been able to build a habitat for them, would have taken them home. But they went to a place full of other birds with people who knew how to take care of them. We didn't name them, just called them Duck, Duck, Duck. They really liked hubs, and would come from far away when he called.
*4-6x a week, we brought a crazy variety of things for them. They're not picky: will walk through the food, etc., so we just piled up a mix of dried meal worms, cereal, frozen veggies, dried corn, watermelon (oh, they LOVED that)...
