Day 3
Reflections on: Viy (1967)
The main character (and most of the other men in this) has a real Corky St. Clair (from Waiting For Guffman (1996)) haircut.
Some of the outdoor scenes were shot on location while others were clearly filmed on a set in front of a painted backdrop or rear projection screens. Pick a lane!
Lots of good animal actors, but given the context this was made in I doubt they were treated very humanely :(
Russian icon paintings of god (or Jesus?) REALLY look like aliens.
Some good spooky music and cool practical effects.
This isn't actually a story about a witch, it's more about a dumb guy priest who is often drunk - mainly because I think they drank vodka instead of water back in 19th century Russia.
There's no motive behind the plot. The witch doesn't say or do anything to warrant her fate. Maybe that's the point? The villagers seem unaware of the witch, yet they all seem to do her bidding. It felt simplistic and disconnected story-wise, but I guess it's based off a novella from 1835 so it is what it is.
If you absolutely feel the need to watch this you can probably skip to the last 10 minutes where all the fun stuff is.

I don’t know if you’ve been asked this before, but is there a deeper meaning to Clear’s tattoos?
nah, she got them when she was younger just to piss her parents off even more before they kicked her out. the designs i chose were definitely inspired by corky's tattoos from the movie bound (iconic lesbian movie please watch it), but also the wrapped barbed wire is just such a classic old-school butch tattoo, she had to have it, for maximum parental disapproval.
#that's the only one she shares with corky but the kind of like. Vibes are similar#and also i think tramp stamps are charming. sue me#she was absolutely going for 'what will my parents hate the most'#and i wanted them to be dated a little too since she would have gotten them in the early 2000s#when those kinds of tattoos were at their peak#clear rivers#ask#anonymous

Gina Gershon told she'd 'never work again' after 1996 lesbian film
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/gina-gershon-told-shed-never-work-again-after-1996-lesbian-film/
Gina Gershon told she'd 'never work again' after 1996 lesbian film
In a recent episode of the ‘It Happened in Hollywood’ podcast, Bound costars Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly spoke about their roles in the iconic lesbian film.
Written and directed by the Wachowskis in their feature-film debut, Bound tells the story of Violet (Tilly), a woman who is trapped in a relationship with a mobster named Caesar (Joe Pantoliano) but falls in love with ex-con Corky (Gershon), a woman working on their apartment building.
“It was a great script and I could tell they were incredible directors, but my agents were like, ‘We will not let you do this movie. You are ruining your career,’ ” Gershon said on the podcast.
“‘We will not be able to let you represent. You will never work again.’ “
“I said, first of all, it’s so shortsighted to say, ‘Oh, this is a lesbian movie.’ I mean, they happen to be lesbians,” Gershon said. “They happen to be into women, but it’s really a movie about trust.”
“I thought that was so small-minded and shortsighted. And if that’s what we were up against, I was in.”
Gina Gershon loved to play ‘the hero’ in Bound
Gina Gershon added that she loved that she got to play ‘the hero’ on screen.
“When does the girl get to play the hero, you know?’ she said.
“I thought, ‘Well, I could cut off my hair, cut off my nails, have no makeup. I get the girl. I get the car. I screw over the mob.’ It’s a win-win all around.”
As for the infamous sex scene with Gerson, Jennifer Tilly praised her costar: “Gina’s the best person in the world to have a sex scene [with], because we have so much trust.”
“I could say to Gina, ‘Can you hold up my breast so it looks a little more juicy and and perky?’ ” she said.
“We were really helping each other out, and she’s just the coolest person in the world.”

In 1970, Mayo Thompson released his only solo record to date. It's a strange thing to write 50 years later, especially given the Texas-born musician's wildly prolific career as the sole consistent member of the eclectic and enigmatic Red Krayola. Ignored in many circles upon its release, Corky has grown in stature over the decades, which -- much like the Red Krayola -- has achieved the status of cult icon. Thompson has begun playing the album live in recent years, as he chart the course for a potential sequel, half a century later.

Hanukkah will be different this year. Many of us are far from family and celebrating with our small pods, if not by ourselves. So what better way to treat yourself and embrace this unique year than with a new tradition — a mouth-watering, carb-tastic latke sandwich. Crunchy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, latkes make the perfect bun for any juicy deli meat (plus, they’re easy to assemble at home).
Here are five places across the U.S. where you can order a latke sandwich:
1. 2nd Avenue Deli
New York, New York
New York is the birthplace of the Jewish delicatessen and at the iconic kosher 2nd Avenue Deli you can order all your favorites, including a latke sandwich. To no surprise, this overstuffed sandwich is called The Instant Heart Attack.™ It can be ordered with corned beef, pastrami, turkey, or salami for $31.95.
In 2012, the Instant Heart Attack caught national attention as the star of a federal lawsuit. The Heart Attack Grill in Nevada, a hospital-themed restaurant specializing in highly caloric burgers, claimed the delicatessen was infringing on its trademarks. The federal judge ruled in favor of the 2nd Avenue Deli, noting that there’s “no likelihood of confusion” between a latke and a cheeseburger. As the Daily News reported, “Rye-t on! 2nd Ave Deli wins sandwich suit.”
2. Kenny & Ziggy’s
Houston, Texas
At Kenny & Ziggy’s in Houston, feast on the Luck Be A Latke — brisket sandwiched between two potato pancakes with applesauce or sour cream for $21.95. This melt-in-your-mouth sandwich can be ordered for curbside pick-up or delivery in the Houston area. Lucky for you, Kenny & Ziggy’s schleps nationwide; order two dozen latkes and your choice of deli meats and assemble a latke sandwich at home!
3. Schmaltzy’s Delicatessen
Seattle, Washington
Seattle is home to the most innovative latke sandwich. At Schmaltzy’s Delicatessen, Chef Johnny invented the Latke PressSandwich, a latke sandwich pressed like a panini. Schmaltzy’s, which began as a food truck, offers four uniquely delicious pressed latke sandwiches served in French fry bags, so they’re easy to hold and even easier to eat your way through. For vegetarians or brie-fanatics like myself, order the Classic Combo — Honeycrisp apple, brie, caramelized onion, spinach, sherry vinegar, and thyme for $12. For a more traditional latke sandwich, order The OG with house-made pastrami, The Schmear with house-cured lox, or the less traditional, cheekily named Jewbano, like a pork cubano. Order for pick-up by phone or on their website.
4. Manny’s Cafeteria & Delicatessen
Chicago, Illinois
At Manny’s Cafeteria & Delicatessen, the fourth-generation deli in Chicago, any sandwich can be a latke sandwich. Egg salad, chopped liver, hard salami, you name it. During the eight nights of Hanukkah you can order a latke sandwich for the price of the deli sandwich plus $3. While only advertised during Hanukkah, the latke sandwich is a secret menu item that can be ordered year-round. Available for local Chicago pick-up and delivery.
5. Corky & Lenny’s
Woodmere, Ohio
Thirty minutes east of Cleveland, Ohio is Corky & Lenny’s, the classic, unpretentious Jewish deli. Corky & Lenny’s has been a landmark Cleveland destination for 64 years. One of their house favorites is Beef & Latkes and it’s exactly what it sounds like — corned beef, pastrami, or brisket on potato pancakes with applesauce or sour cream. This sandwich is available for dine-in or pick-up for $15.95.

Review: Grayson Capps- 'Heartbreak, Misery, & Death'
Sometimes you can look at the title of an album and know just what you're getting. Heartbreak, Misery, & Death, the seventh release from Alabama troubadour Grayson Capps is one of those albums. While Capps is no stranger to any of those three subjects in his original music, for this album he pulled sixteen favorite covers, from traditional to more contemporary songs, running the gamut from Doc Watson and Roy Acuff to Leonard Cohen and Jerry Jeff Walker.
The highlight of the album is also its oldest song. “Barbara Allen” is a ballad that dates back to the 17th Century and briefly saw a renewed popularity during the folk revival of the '60s when artists like Pete Seeger recorded covers. Capps' version of the song strips much of the flair from even those folksy renditions. The entire album features only Capps and his longtime collaborator Corky Hughes and it's on these ancient songs that the format works best. Capps' gruff and bluesy vocals sell the tale of a dying man whose love is spurned by “hard-hearted Barbara Allen”, and I've seen it sold.
Another song that is enhanced by the stripped down format is another traditional that dates to the 17th Century, “Old Maid's Lament.” Over Hughes' ambling strum, Capps gives an almost cheery take on the heartbreak of a young lady who can't seem to find a husband despite standards that are increasingly lowered as the song goes on.
But you can't get much more stripped down than the album's opener, Doc Watson's lament “Wake Up Little Maggie.” Here Capps takes a cue from the original and goes a cappela. There just isn't any better way to convey the mournful tone of the song's narrator. Instruments get in the way.
For the “death” part of the album, Capps highlights a pair of early-to-mid 20th-century compositions. One is “Wreck on the Highway”, made famous by bluegrass icons like Roy Acuff and The Louvin Brothers. Here is where Hughes' input is most valuable to the album. “Wreck on the Highway,” with its religious overtones, only truly works as a bluegrass tune and, while Capps doesn't have the range to do the “high and lonesome” vocals, Hughes can and his harmonies help immensely. Another death song is “Moody River,” first made famous by Pat Boone in 1961. Telling the story of a woman who cheats on her lover and kills herself in a fit of regret by drowning herself in a river, it's a song that fits Capps' more timeworn vocals than it ever did Pat Boone's dulcet tones.
But it isn't all old songs that find a place in Heartbreak, Misery, & Death. Capps also finds inspiration from more modern songs. “Stoney” is a song by Jerry Jeff Walker that dates back to 1970. Walker's witty lyrics and delivery are a pretty good comp for Capps' career output so it's no surprise to find he's a fan, nor that “Stoney” feels the most like a Grayson Capps original. Elsewhere he takes on Randy Newman's “Guilty,” “Early Morning Rain” by Gordon Lightfoot, and what feels like the world's most covered song, Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah.”
Just to make sure it isn't all “Heartbreak, Misery, & Death,” Capps ends the album with what he calls “the greatest campfire song of all time,” “Copper Kettle.” Another early 20th Century folkie best known for a cover by Joan Baez, it's the tale of a moonshiner family who takes up the business because “never shall you toil.” With its refrain of “Watch that whiskey flowing in the pale moonlight,” it's easy to see why it would be a great song for a campfire guitar pull and that's exactly what it sounds like here.
Capps doesn't reinvent the wheel here. There are no radical reinterpretations of any of the covers represented here. That isn't what Heartbreak, Misery, and Death is about. Instead, it's a celebration of some of Capps' favorite traditionial, meant to be enjoyed just as they are. In that respect, the album works. It's as fun as an album full of songs about dying can be.
