The Fairytale Keeper’s Final Assessment (Epilogue) - Roger Barel

This is the epilogue to his first anniversary story that I keep forgetting to put out 😅 I did a short summary when the event was going but imo this epilogue is so important!!!

As usual, can’t guarantee 100% accuracy on this

“Kate, I have heard of your hard work. As always, thank you.

Therefore, I’m placing trust in you to assess one thing.

Whether Roger, a cursed one, is worthy of being in Crown.”

(That means she wants me to assess Roger, right?)

As I followed Her Majesty’s elegant script, I understood what she was asking of me.

Perhaps because I recently had my own assessment, she was giving me the same chance to do the same.

(Both Her Majesty and Victor are fairly impartial)

(Alright! I’ll just have to write a lot of good things about Roger)

(When it comes to Roger, his skills as a doctor are what comes to mind)

Kate: Jude…that injury!

Jude: Quit your yappin’. Blood ain’t stoppin’ with all that racket.

Ellis: He’s alright, Kate. Getting stabbed’s a daily occurrence for Jude so he’s used to it. We’ll just have Roger sew him up like usual.

Kate: Liam…that injury!

Liam: Ah, this? Al and I were jumping across roofs while drunk and I slipped off.

Alfons: Don’t worry about it. This sort of thing is an everyday occurrence with the cat’s curse. Roger, can you hear me? Please treat him immediately!

~~ Flashback end ~~

(...Thinking back, it’s pretty absurd)

(If it weren’t for Roger, we’d have one or two dead by now)

They can only carry out their missions if they're alive, so having Roger around is really important.

It’s obvious that Roger’s a necessity to Crown.

I sat down in front of my typewriter and tried to write about Roger’s importance.

(Huh, what the…I’m feeling a little annoyed)

I ended up thinking about Roger’s wicked smile, how he’s always pushing me around, teasing me, and treating me like a dog.

And so, within my heart…a little evil sprouted in my mind.

(Maybe I’ll write something about Roger’s bullying for a bit)

I knew I was being petty, but I didn’t think I’d ever get another chance to get back at Roger.

I first typed out “about Roger’s bullying”.

(Oh yeah, the other day…)

Roger: Kate, got something for you. Here.

Kate: What’s this? A fluffy ball?

Roger: It’s a toy my corgi likes. Thought you’d like it too since you’re like him.

Kate: Wha…

Roger: He’ll happily wag his tail like an idiot when I throw it. If you want me to throw it for you, just let me know.

(Ah, that’s right. That day too)

Kate: Roger…Roger? Are you asleep?

(It’s rare to see Roger napping)

(Ah, his glasses are crooked…Removing them should be fine, right?)

Roger: …Caught you.

Kate: Please let me go. You were pretending to be asleep, weren’t you?

Roger: yeah. Wanted to catch and give you a little hug. Ahhh, you’re so warm…You’re running hot.

(U-um…that was weird)

(I was going to write about Roger’s bullying, but then—)

Roger: Oh, what’s this about “Roger’s bullying”?

Kate: ……Roger. W-when did you…

Roger: I called out to you, but you were too focused to notice. So, this is a letter from Her Majesty? …She wants you to do a reverse assessment. And you were in the middle of ranting and raving on me being a bully.

Kate: Well…that…

I can’t give an excuse when he’s seen everything.

Afraid that I angered him, I nervously looked up at Roger. I didn’t expect to see a wicked smile on his face.

Roger: Just like experiments are needed for research, real-life experiences are needed for reports, right?

Roger pinned both my hands down on the desk with one hand.

It was like putting me in handcuffs.

Roger: I’ll bully you some more so you can tell Her Majesty. Come on, remember this. “He grabbed my arms and I couldn’t move.”

Kate: Roger…

Roger: “Then he raised my chin with his other hand—”

Our lips were so close that they almost touched. Amber eyes pierced into mine.

Roger: And after that, you can write “he kissed me roughly”.

(Roger’s angry…)

(No, I can’t write off as something as simple as that)

When I stared closer into those amber eyes, there was a hint of sadness.

(Ah)

I realized that I had misled Roger into thinking he wasn’t needed in Crown.

(That’s not true)

Kate: I-it’s true that I wanted to write about you being a bully, but… The only reason I could do that was because everyone knows that you’re someone Crown needs. Besides…um…I need you too.

Roger: Even though I bully you so much that you want to tell on me?

Kate: …Originally it was just some petty mischief. But halfway in, I couldn’t bring myself to write it. I didn’t want Her Majesty to find out about how I…don’t hate the bullying…

Roger: …O_O

Kate: I’m sorry for the misunderstanding, Roger…

Roger’s lips cut off the rest of my words.

He stole a kiss.

Kate: Wha…?!

Roger: You like it when I bully you and your body ends up acting on its own.

Kate: I-I didn’t say that. I said that I “don’t hate” it.

Roger: Sure, sure. Just misheard you with my bad hearing.

(......Geez)

(But I’m glad I cleared up the misunderstanding. I’m glad he’s smiling)

Pulling myself together, I returned to my typewriter and heard Roger’s gravelly voice.

Roger: …I’m glad you think I’m needed.

Kate: …

That voice vibrated against my eardrums and wouldn’t leave my mind.

I couldn’t even look at Roger.

I think my report conveyed how special Roger’s become to me.

Roger poked my cheek while I looked down, feeling confused.

Heya!! This is kinda just a masterpost of info for myself :)

This is my masterpost for the Playground! The Playground is a space station run, managed, and inhabited by characters that I claim on Mudae. It's run by a council of characters ranging from Garrosh Hellscream to Tessa James Elliot to Nami. If you decide to read about my silly little space station, I hope you enjoy!

The Playground

First Ring

- Contains only the residential halls: Res. Halls 1-4, each with 200 rooms housing two residents apiece, for a total of 2000 citizens, excluding the quarters that the Councilmembers stay in

- Halls 1A-1D connect each Res. Hall to the Second Ring. Hall 1A is attached to Res. Hall 1, Hall 1B to Res. Hall 2, etc.

Second Ring

- Cafeteria, in which meals are made-to-order, rather than having predetermined daily options.

- Halls 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B

- Gymnasium, housing equipment suitable for all manner of workout exercises to be performed by anyone.

- Halls 1C, 1D, 2C

Third Ring

- Library, containing hundreds of thousands of documents ranging from scrolls to books to hard drives. All are sorted in order of Era > Genre > Author's Last Initial > Book Title.

- Hall 2A

- Classrooms, which include two for each academic subject per grade and one for each elective per grade up until higher education, where the classes split into field-specific courses rather than generalised subjects.

- Recreational Facilities, ranging from an area with an arcade and more modern video game systems to an area devoted to sports, with enough space to house two games of each sport.

- Arcade, housing all public-use video game or general entertainment consoles such as Pinball.

- The Fields, which houses all of the sports-dedicated facilities, as well as an actual open field for picnicking and general frolicking.

- Tabletop Arena, facilities to house all of the tabletop games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Jenga, and Monopoly.

- Halls 2B, 3A, R1

- Bathhouse, which has 200 publicly available, but completely private showers for post-workout (or general) use if you don't wish to go back to your room or have other places to be on the other Rings. Must bring your own soaps.

- Halls 2C, 3B, R2

Fourth Ring

- Security wing, which oversees all internal safety affairs

- Local Aerospace Security, handling the entrance and exit of visitors and citizens of the Playground.

- Internal Security, the part of the department that oversees the safety and well-being of the Playground and its denizens.The largest portion of the department.

- Prison Security, which ensures that the Column of Solitude performs as it should.

- The general guards are the standard force inside the Column, ensuring the peace is kept within its walls.

- The Columnar Sentinels are the true forces of reckoning within the confines of the Column. They are some of the fiercest battle-masters in the Playground, often tertiary to any given Councilmember.

- Docking Bay, which contains all 50 public docks, as well as all 25 private docks, which are reserved for the Playground Councilmembers, as well as foreign leaders.

- Halls 3A, 4A

- Hall P1, which leads to the Column of Solitude (more commonly known as simply The Column) - Hospital wing, making sure all of the people on board the Playground are in good health. - Pharmacy, where all OTC and prescription drugs are handled with the utmost care.

- Hall 3B, 4B

Fifth Ring

- Combat Training Facilities, which are open only to those in the Playground that are among the Security Department or the Council.

- Halls 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B

- Councilmembers' Quarters, which all have portal access to their private docks in the Docking Bay.

Sixth Ring

- Less of a ring and more of a gigantic room, the Sixth Ring is dedicated entirely to being the discussion-room of the Council. The room is designed largely like a court of law, having space at the Council's table for the members themselves, as well as a jury. When necessary, these tables can be retracted into the floors to allow for large-scale holograms for war meetings or other displays.

- Halls 5A, 5B, P2

Column of Solitude

The Column got its name due to the fact that the only ways out are through the most powerful people in the entire Playground. Inside, it is split into 10 layers, with the most dangerous prisoners being held on the bottom layer, closest to the Council. The Tenth Layer prisoners are kept in environments designed to weaken their abilities as much as possible. Each layer above this has gradually less dangerous criminals with the last prisoners being held on the Third Layer serving light sentences for relatively minor offenses. The First and Second Layers are collectively referred to as the Rehabilitation Layers (or just Rehab), and are for those requiring services such as general therapy or rehabilitation for substance abuse.

Other Notes

- Though the rings and the Column rotate independently of each other, the entrances to the halls are kept fixed to the same spot in each Ring via portals. This means that, though none of the sections of the Playground are directly attached, each is always accessible, regardless of how the halls or rings might be oriented. Each section is kept from drifting away from its placement in the collection of parts via magic, so that none of the parts ever become lost despite being detached from one another.

- The Playground is a mobile space station despite not having any thrusters. This is because the FTL Navigator uses its portals to send the station wherever it needs to go.

- The Playground operates like a social welfare state. Things like housing, food, water, and healthcare are free for the residents of the Playground, while non-essentials such as private book collections, video game collections, action figures, toys, and stuffed animals cost money and are priced according to demand. There are enough jobs for around 1500 Players to be making money at once, though these are rarely all filled at the same time.

- Many of the jobs on the Playground obviously provide different salaries than the others. For instance, essential jobs like any in the kitchen or as plumbers will pay higher than those that are less necessary for the function of the station, such as jobs revolving around selling things to the Players. Security, Food Staff, and Educator positions pay the most, but also have intensive screenings before and during a Player's employment. This is to ensure that no abuse of power comes into play. Educators and Food Staff are evaluated every two months by Security. Each low-ranking member of Security is evaluated monthly by a superior officer from a different squad, who is selected randomly. That officer would also be evaluated in the same way, up until you get to the Department Heads overseeing the running of all departments. The Department Heads are evaluated every two weeks by the Councilors directly, who are evaluated every two weeks by surveys filled out by the Players. The Councillors are able to ignore the advice, suggestions, and complaints that arise from this survey, but rarely do thanks to the fact that High Playground Law states that the Players are allowed to remove the current Councilors by force, and by the fact that this has been successful every time it has happened in the past.

- The positions on the Council are: The Playground Overseer (Myself), Second in Command (Luffy), Councilperson of Defense (Garrosh Hellscream), Councilperson of Botany (Nanachi), Councilperson of Engineering (Tessa Elliot), Councilperson of Technology (Judy Alvarez), Councilperson of Medicine (Chopper), Councilperson of the Treasury (Nami), Councilperson of Education (Teacher (from Player)), and Councilperson of Magic (Frieren) - The roles of each Council member are: - Defense - Handles the general security of the Playground. This means that the Heads of Aerospace and Internal Security report directly to this Councilperson. - Botany - Oversees the agricultural and culinary divisions of the Playground, helping to ensure that the food is always edible and the water always potable. - Engineering - Along with the rest of the department, the Councilperson of Engineering makes sure that the power remains stable on the station. This seat on the Council must also ensure that the Playground is livable, meaning that there are no lapses in the integrity of the outer hull, that there are no exposed wires on board that aren’t meant to be so, etc., which is a responsibility that is often aided by the Magic Department. - Technology - Holds a similar position to the Engineering department, although this department specifically handles the electronics. This means making sure there are no cyberattacks (worked in tandem with the Defense department), keeping Wi-Fi running, performing regular diagnostics of the Playground’s various functions and facilities, and other such tasks. - Medicine - Handles the medical side of the Playground, ensuring that the doctors and nurses are performing the best that they can (and are doing well themselves, of course), as well as keeping the pharmacy running smoothly.

- Education - Handles all of the educational facilities to make sure that they perform in a meaningful and satisfactory way. Ensures the respectful treatment of all faculty, staff, students, and equipment. - Magic - Covers the safe and appropriate use of magic, which often overlaps with other departments such as botany and defense. This means doing things like ensuring no one is using scrying or otherwise offensive spells without express written permission from the department and other involved parties.

- The Treasury - Oversees the monetary portion of the Playground, helping the Overseer stay within the short- and long-term budgets as exchanges are made. Also keeps internal money flow moving smoothly and not accruing too high or low in any given area.

- The Playground is aligned into the shape of a cone, with the Column resting at its centre. Each layer of the Column lines up with a ring or the space between two rings (the First Layer lines with the First Ring, while the Second Layer lines with Halls 1A-1D, etc.). The Playground as a whole always rests along the midpoint between the planets in a given solar system. For instance, in the Sol System, it would rest in between Saturn and Uranus, on the side of Saturn. If it would be in the orbital path of a planet, it gets sent to the next nearest safe location.
