Cornfields (Corey Cunningham x Reader)
Tumblr media
Hello hello happy Friday 13th! Enjoy some angst with this spooky boy. Note that italics are a flashback! You can also find me on Twitter and AO3 as ArtrMrgn
Warnings: Alcohol consumption, knife mention. If you think of anything else let me know!
Word Count: 1,384
Music blasts from the bar. Some song about a girl pining for a man she'll never get. Oh, the irony. You look down at your almost-empty red solo cup and swirl around the contents, trying your best not to steal glimpses of the Cat and the Scarecrow.
You know both identities, in reality. Allyson Nelson and Corey Cunningham. Allyson was your towns Winona Ryder knock off from "Heathers" but it suited her. She had "effortless cool girl" down pat, which you admired.
And unfortunately, were also jealous of. But deep down you knew it wasn't really for her cool girl demeanor but rather the attention she was getting from the straw man in the purple hat.
Curly haired cutie pie Corey Cunnigham had you head over heels. The reluctant Mama's boy with no social circle was really who you were wanting to lay it all on the line for.
If anyone had a hell of a life at 24, it was Corey. All of Haddonfield knew the reason why and 99% of the town despised him. But save for you and the Strode's, you were all that Corey had in his corner.
The two of them were moving out of sync, but they were both having fun and in the end that’s what Corey needed and deserved.
You chug the remainder of your drink and crush your cup, tossing it into the trash. It’s not like you came to the bar with Corey anyway. To be honest you hadn’t really shared more than a few words with him since the cornfields.
As the mud squished between the grooves of your boots taking the fallen autumn leaves and dry corn husks with it, you regretted not following Corey’s lead. He had brought garbage bags, the ones you use for the bin in the bathroom or the trash can under the kitchen sink, and had tied them around his ankles with some twine, saving the canvas of his sneakers and rubber outsoles.
Another step had you cringing slightly. The squish of clay earth between your feet never felt pleasant and was a bitch to clean off. It didn’t help that dry pieces of corn kernels would be stuck in your boots making it look like a dog’s shit when it got into the canned goods. Fucking gross.
Corey Cunningham couldn’t help but let out a chuckle in jest as you tried and failed to put as little pressure as possible into the ground.
“It’s a sensory thing!” You whined, turning around to meet his smile with your own almost face to face. You hadn’t realized how close he had gotten. Even with the awful squelch of mud Corey was as quiet as a mouse.  He towered over you despite his humble stature.
“Want me to carry you?” He offered, bending his knees and bracing himself for a piggy-back.
“Well, if you insist.”
Your friendship with Corey made you stick out like a sore thumb. It didn’t bother you one bit.
What did bother you was this “thing” going on between the two of you. It was a relatively new feeling, that swarm of butterflies in your stomach when a touch lingered too long. It was something you wanted to embrace so last week you pushed the envelope and pecked him on the check. Quick. Sweet. Innocent. To your surprise, Corey had planted one on you right back. Most likely out of reflex, no doubt an action ingrained into his mind by his toxic matriarch. But when Corey had realized what he’d done, he made a half-assed excuse and rode off on his bicycle.
Neither of you had mentioned it since and it was eating you up inside. When you had asked him to visit the corn-maze and he’d eagerly agreed you’d thought maybe it wasn’t just one sided. But so far both of you have been too chicken to do anything.
You were saddling up on auto-pilot when he shook you out of your thoughts by giving your thighs the slightest squeeze, securing you in place.
Your face flushed.
“Ready?”
“Green light, Steve McQuee-“ the words barely left your mouth before he broke in stride. But the pace didn’t last long.
It happened in seconds but you felt like you were falling in slow motion. Your eyes took in the scene before you; a sneakered foot sticking out of the cornfields, the muddy surface below about to hit your face, and the grip Corey had on you trying his damndest to make sure he ate the most shit.
As the force of your body collided with Corey and the ground, your ears filled with the annoying laughter of pimple popping high school band geeks who thought they were hot shit. You wished people were better than this.
You climbed off of Corey's back and offered him a hand up. He was caked in dirt, but his hold had saved you from the sensory overload of mud drying on your skin. He wiped his face with the sleeve of his shirt, smearing everything in the process. You took the sleeve of your jacket between your fingers to wipe the mud from Corey's now cracked glasses. That'll be the third pair now this year, damn it. You knew Joan was going to give him an earful, but that's an issue for later. Right now, you needed to get these dweebs to scram.
"Well if it isn't Corey Cunningham!" one of them shouts. "What're you doing here? Scouting for your next victim?"
Corey stayed silent, looking at the ground. Your eyes pierced daggers into theirs.
"Why don't you kids pick on somebody from your own age group?" You retort, voice dripping with annoyance. Instinctively you step in front of Corey.
"What the hell are you going to do about it?"
Your rage gets the best of you and you react before thinking. Your hand is in and out of your pockets in a flash and you procure your butterfly knife, flicking it into place. The colour immediately drains from the teens faces. You figuratively kick yourself as you take in their expressions. You may have overreacted.
You didn’t typically carry it with you, but lately, with the number of cuts and scrapes you’re cleaning up on Corey, you thought it best to bring something to at least scare people off. And what better than your incredibly niche hobby of knife tricks. Now that you’re in the moment though? It’s not looking like the best idea you’ve ever had.
"Christ, you're just as psycho as he is!" They all run off back into the fields, likely to continue their parade of mischief. As you hear the crunch of their footsteps begin to fade away, you tuck the blade away and shamefully turn to Corey. You weren't exactly sure what to expect from him, but you didn't think the outcome would be positive.
Before the apology can leave your mouth, the muddy man of your dreams hugs you and holds you close and for a moment you forget he’s covered in icky mud because he’s got your stomach doing summersaults. With his warm breath on your neck and his nose brushing up against your ear he mumbles a thank you. You want to kiss him and say anytime.
Corey pulls away, his large hands now firmly on your shoulders and he lets out a half-hearted laugh.
And that’s when teeth clash and lips bruise. It’s awkward and clumsy and wet but it’s Corey.
And it’s over as soon as it starts.
That damn kiss.
You had a strong feeling that kiss had to be his first but … the way it made you feel like a pine tree going - poof! - up in flames? Let’s give credit where credit is due.
He ran off immediately after that. Hopped off the bike and sped off. Every text you’ve sent requesting to talk about it and every phone call’s on been screened. After a few days you gave up and took the heartbreak with grace on the outside, while crying yourself to sleep over a stupid boy on the inside.
You look over to Corey one last time. He's on the floor smiling, looking up to Allyson.
Making your way home by foot, you cut through the cornfields.

warning: an actually somewhat positive 2 cents about Halloween ends
I just came back from the theater and was suprised to come on here and see everyone absolutely demolishing this film (I mean it’s hilarious and y’all do have a point) when I actually enjoyed it!
My mom turned to me, disgruntled and mumbling as the end credits rolled, and a ginger guy and his s/o were talking to us after the movie and saying how much they thoroughly detested it. But I actually found it to be the best of the modern sequels
I think the reason I liked acts one and two so much honestly is due to my utter loathing of Halloween kills. That movie spit on me and threw me in a dumpster. Holy fuck I hated it so. So much. They made Michael into a god damned chainsaw, he wasn’t even Michael anymore he just cut down everyone in sight, and it was so stupid I literally yelled at the screen in the theater (luckily I wasn’t the only one). So I think seeing a Halloween film where the body count is back to the single digits soothed my soul from a few years ago. Also bringing the killers back down to a more human level, just with a knack of surviving the impossible, was cathartic and reminiscent of the first five (except three bc who actually watches that one) films, which imo the brother Michael to Jamie niece pipeline is superior (when Paul Rudd gets added to the mix is when I start hating it and switch over to H20).
I also love next gen nonsense, and I and aware I am hereby the scum of the earth, and that’s where this movie excels for me and also majorly disappoints. Because I thought we were getting the transfer of evil from Michael to Corey, but also a what if Laurie didn’t fight for good and instead submitted to the lure of evil and it’s ease? I thought the inclusion of Alyson in that was cool, however they totally fucked it up.
Because at first it’s like oh Alyson doesn’t want to fight it anymore, or maybe she was cristened in the evil because of how she grew up and wouldn’t that be the perfect way for Michael to win if not in flesh: Laurie’s own granddaughter committing to evil. However they just didn’t do that?
All of a sudden Alyson isn’t .. dark. She’s just done with her phase ????????? Like whyyyyy it could have been so perfect why must you do this to me?
Also in the vein of massive disappointment yet mid movie satisfaction is Corey’s whole character. Because I liked how he was a mild blend of young Laurie and Michael (smart baby sitter -> killer ig is the only link lmao) and some of the set up was clever if not slightly crude in execution; i.e, him sleeping and sort of hiding in the home of his first kill, much like Michael hid in his childhood home where he killed Judith. I loved that idea, and giving him his own mask, specially a creepy Halloween one reminiscent of Michaels clown mask which I thought was cool.
But THEY JUST KILL HIM ??
I waited for the end of the credits in hopes of a scene shot from the window of Jeremy Allen’s house, with nothing but breathing for audio, and a slow shot of someone picking up the scarecrow mask and looking out at haddon field from the window.
But, no. 🗿
However I still have hope for this, idk why I guess I’m just delusional. However considering Michael let himself die imo and allowed himself to be carried to the massive meat grinder, and that Corey sat up after being stabbed in the neck, I get the impression Corey could have sat up after his neck was snapped (considering he was shot multiple times and sustained two falls from fatal heights and a fucking neck wound but what ever) and if Michael wasn’t ready to go then he could just punched the window from the roof of the car, so I figured that scene when he was over Corey was a sort of eye signal thing to take over the mantle bc the whole movie he was turning to Michael for guidance but it was his time to fully grasp the role. Therefore Michael allowed them to kill him and destroy his body as Corey became the sole owner of the form, which would explain why both of them were in mid strength throughout the movie bc evil incarnate can only fulfill one form fully.
But. No.
And if not that, I figured Alyson would then be who the evil was transferred to. Idk I guess I supposed she was going to play an actual role in the film but … sigh.
So yes while I have many complaints about how they dropped the ball with the end, what this movie could have been, and what it delivers in the first and second act make this one of the more compelling sequels imo, and by FAR the best of the new three, in my opinion at least. The last two new ones were honestly disrespectful to the franchise imo and completely misunderstood the point of Michael: he’s not like a machine gun. He’s scary cause he’s evil and stalks his prey, not because you guys found some cool and gross cgi to attach to your film and decimate an entire town population. That’s an apocalypse atp, not a slasher or killer.
So this one definitely payed wonderful homage (ty for adding the picture of Annie and Linda 🥲, the knitting needles!! Someone stabbed on the wall, and Corey standing watching Laurie like Michael in the first film) and had a decent vibe that fit in with the original imo better than Halloween kills (my genuine arch nemesis). However the ending didn’t just fall flat, it fell from an eight story building.
HOWEVER. THEY ADDED DONT FEAR THE REAPER IN THE END CREDITS. And I feel that song should get more credit as the iconic Halloween song.
And though many are upset about Michaels lack of screen time, I was honestly so pissed that they made him a terminator in the last film, I was okay with it.
And Laurie, dear, pls step on me.
Jamie was 10379128/10 in this movie. *chefs kiss*
So sorry if you read this whole thing :/

can we have number 5. “You’re gonna have to be quiet.” w/ corey cunnigham? it gives me hide and seek vibes 😉
I just love this idea so much
Be quiet!
Pre-Accident Corey Cunningham x Fem Reader
————————————————————————
Tumblr media
————————————————————————
Summary: You and Corey get heated during a game of hide in seek..
Warnings/contains: Smut, semi-public? (Chance of getting caught), (Sub) Corey, (Soft dom) reader, just really fluffy smut, friends to lovers stuff, hair pulling
Word count :1.4k
A/n: Sorry if the format is weird I’m writing part of this on my phone and part on my computer. I took too much time to write this. Also i apologize if this isn’t the best i don’t have a lot of experience with writing smut I'm more of a reader.
“So your telling me….” Corey was crouched down looking at the 10 year old, he was obviously tired. “You don’t want to watch tv, read, play board games, or make snacks. So what do you want to do?” He was slowly losing patience with the child.
You wanted to clean up the house. You guys already had made such a mess around doing all these things. Pillows were flung from off the couch, Shoes were tossed and thrown by the door and even the kitchen. The girls mom ordered pizza before hand for her daughter of course but was also nice enough to get a box for us. So there were cups and plates all over the table. Some still had drinks/Food in them.
It almost looked like someone threw a frat party rather than a couple of babysitters and a 10 year old.
You and Corey have been babysitting together since you both were teens around 16 or so. And you’ve been friends for a even longer time. This was something you’d always do together more than separate and alone. Handling certain kids alone is a complete nightmare. I mean for you at least Corey is fantastic with kids it’s insane how he talk’s to them so well.
It’s just a little temporary job to make money till we find something more permanent. I mean we still ride our bikes to each person’s house we babysit. And besides a more permanent job we still wanna go to collage too. Feels like so much work in so little time. Corey want’s to do some nerdy engineering stuff but, I still really don’t know what I want to do.
“Hide and seek.” The little girl smiled. You were sat on the floor next to Corey, you smiled at her wholesome face. Corey finally cracked somewhat of a smile considering his small success with making the kid finally make up her mind. Corey could never turn down a game of hide and seek. He’s just too good.
“Come on Corey hide and seek.” You chuckled, both standing up. “What if you count to 30 or so and we go hide?” That would provide a tad bit of time for us to be alone. Babysitting is tiring as hell.
“Okay.” She agreed. She turned around facing a wall and placed her hands over her eyes. She began counting which made you and Corey quickly look for a place to hide. You turned in circles looking all over before you came to a stop when seeing the stairs. You pointed your thumb to the staircase and he nodded of approval before he followed after. You guys take games of hide and seek very seriously.
You both carefully made it upstairs without too loud of a noise. It was easier when you had only socks on to cushion any creak or thump we could have made. You decided the guest room would be a great spot since it was farther away from the stair case and also farther from all the other rooms. You hurried in there and made it to closet. You slide the door to the right and made it in. Corey slipped in right you and smiled with a thumbs up as he closed the door. It was bare. Nothing but extra hangers but at least you and Corey had space. And by space you guys barley had a inch between each other when shoulder to shoulder.
“How long do you think it will take for her to find us? I mean her house is sorta big.” You whispered. That was a pro to some kids you guy’s baby sat. Some family's were rich which meant a better pay and sometimes food like what we got today. We always had kids to baby sit which i was surprised since it’s Haddonfeild.
Corey paused for a second to think about the question. You guys were facing each other so you both had more space to even breathe.
“Maybe 10 minutes depending on how long it takes her to get through the downstairs and then you know all the other rooms up here.” His mind thought out everything even though it may be unnecessary. Corey looked over to you his brown eyes were soft and caring. Easy and gentle. You guys were so close. So close.. Your faces inched closer, and closer. His eyes were now closed and so were yours.
You don’t know who kissed who first but it didn’t matter. Not baby sitting, Not breathing, all of it didn’t matter. Not right now anyway. All you could do was concentrate on was Corey’s soft pink lips pressed against yours. Like they were meant to be together.
His kisses were messy and rushed. We didn’t have much time anyways. His glasses became fogged and the closet quickly became hot. Your hand quickly reached to tangle with his curls. His hands snaked around to your hips.
Thought’s swarmed your head. Would this ruin our friendship? Would it be awkward? Or would everything work out?
Corey tried to thrust his hips upward to connect with you but you kept them down which made him let out a whimper against your lips. A feeling went through your body at that moment. You needed to hear those noises again. Your both broke apart breathless.
Pants were quickly discarded along with your sweater you’d worn because of the colder weather approaching. The only thing guarding you from one another was your underwear.
Never in your mind you thought you’d be in a closet fucking your best friend. Considering we didn’t have much time either. You moved his glasses to the top of his head. Him without his glasses was a sight that never failed to be beautiful.
Corey was melting under your gaze. He looked disheveled and messed up already and you’ve barley started.
“Is this okay?” You whispered into his ear. He let out a sound of agreement. You both traveled to the floor, Corey was on his back looking up at you. You felt like a angel just hovering up over his crotch. You slipped his white boxers off and you moved your underwear to the side. Your hands were pressed against his chest.
Corey wasn’t ready for the amount of pleasure you were about to give him. You slammed down on his cock and he let out a loud choked moan out.
“Shh.. You’re gonna have to be quiet.” You placed a hand over his mouth. “Wouldn’t want her to hear us now would we?” You teased. “Try telling that to her mom.” You laughed before letting out a hissed moan as he hit so deep inside you. You felt him throb inside you.
Your hands traveled back to his hair giving it a firm tug. You kept bouncing up and down on him making him even more needy than ever.
“Fuck you feel so good.” He moaned quietly this time, from under you as he thrusted his hips upwards to meet you. His moans and whimpers had you wetter than before. He gripped your hips so hard as if you’d leave him. If it was a dream.
He was so unbelievably needy his hips felt like they were moving in their own. Like he has no control. You just felt too damn good.
It didn’t take him long before he felt his orgasm approaching. Corey let out another little array of moans as he started to get closer and closer to the edge.
“You gonna cum for me Corey?” You leaned over to whisper in his ear. Each bounce and each thrust got more and more powerful. You weren’t too far behind. Chasing after your own as well.
“Yes- oh! Yes.” He moaned. “I’m gonna- I’m gonna..” He panted. you bounced until your finally reached your high letting out a small “Fuck…” You removed yourself from his cock and stroked him until he released on his stomach.
You both took heavy breaths in and out. You pressed your forehead to his and gave him a kiss. You felt his lips quirk upwards as he smiled into it.
“Thank you.” He spoke shyly.
“Anytime Corey.” You kissed his cheek.
“Hey core?” you sighed.
“yeah?”
“I love you.” You brushed his hair from out of his face before you grabbed your sweater from the small pile of clothes that has been discarded earlier. He smiled softly at you.
“I love you too.” he kissed your forehead. You both quickly got dressed before she could find you.
After you both got your pants on you heard the girls foot steps rush into the room as if on time. You heard her shuffle through things before she pulled open the closet.
“I found you guys!” She giggled.
“You sure did!” I smiled at her.
“You guys look really red!”

Of Flashbacks and Firsts
Tumblr media
to explain the background of this fic, it's starting from the present day and jumping back to when they first met when he was pre michael leading up to post michael. also disclaimer, this is my first fic in a really long time so go easy on me please 😭 I think this might become a series, I know it's not perfect but I just wanted to contribute to the corey fic thirstfest currently taking place lmao let me know if you enjoyed this and I will definitely make more of it!
You looked up at the ticking clock on the wall, a steady reminder that you still had an hour left of your shift before you finally were able to clock out and go home to watch that horrible horror movie marathon that you and your boyfriend, Corey had planned earlier on that week. You had finally convinced him to put in all the cheesy classic movies not that it took so much convincing on your part, he always looked forward to spending time with you no matter what you both were watching or doing. The both of you could be watching paint dry and he'd be the happiest man on the planet. The two of you were inseparable since the day you had met him becoming the calm to his storm that he so very much needed everyday. You were the constant he needed in his life, the moon to his stars as cheesy as it was it was the truth. Corey couldn't imagine a world without you, you were his and his only. You only thought the same of him, nothing could ever change that. And yes he may have been acting a little differently ever since the events on the night of the halloween party but after everything that had happened it was more than understandable. He had seen a lot more than you had that night in more ways than one.
———-——————-——————-——————-
The way you both had first met, it was odd thinking back to it. The Corey Cunnigham had stopped in to buy a drink from the very store you still worked at — it was a chocolate milk to be exact. He was almost like a cryptid, rarely out but when he was everyone stopped and watched him with judgement in their unforgiving eyes. Ruthless remarks were said behind his back and some even to his face. All you could do was smile empethcially at him and shoot daggers at the ones in the store who had something to say.
After you had checked him out, one thing led to another and before you knew it a loud commotion could be heard from outside after he had walked out. "C'mon dude just buy us some. We won't tell, we promise. Be a cool psycho babysitter and get us some beer." One of the teenagers smirked stepping forward to corner Corey, daring him to do something about it.
You had had enough of the people in this town and just wanted some peace and quiet for the boy. Why couldn't they just leave him alone? These thoughts plagued your mind and never left it. Who knew threatening some spoiled ass teenagers lives would be on your to-do list that day. Not you of course but they weren't going to get by with harassing the curly haired boy with the puppy dog eyes who literally had done nothing but come to get a drink.
"Listen up, you guys better buy something or get the hell outta here."
But of course not before one of them had shoved Corey to the ground catching him off guard, the bottle breaking with a loud shatter slicing his hand on the broken bottle of milk he had just bought. You had patched him up to the best of your abilities with bandages inside, not caring who saw you.
"Why help me? I mean they're not going to stop harrasing you now that you've helped me." Corey protested, holding out his rather large calloused palm that rested in your own as you continued to patch him up, making sure to be as gentle as you could wrapping the bandage around the open gash that made you inwardly cringe.
"Mmm, because I don't think someone like you deserves to be pushed around. You haven't done anything to them and besides they're just band geeks on steroids anyways. Not like they can chase me down with their clarinets and beat me up." A soft laugh escaped your lips as you finished up your handiwork before giving his upper arm a gentle squeeze.
Corey's face flushed instantly beneath his rimmed glasses at the feeling of your hand resting on him. He hadn't ever been this close to a girl well...ever. Everyone was terrified of him, "the psycho babysitter" as he was dubbed. But not you for some odd reason. You felt like you could understand him a whole other level just by gazing into those big brown eyes. They held so much within them, so many unsaid things that a book could be written about what they had seen.
"You uh–you know who I am already, don't you." He said matter of factly, peering up at you from the corner of his eye. Your heart sunk a little hearing the way he said it. Yes, you did indeed know who he was and what happened that fateful night. However, unlike the other people in Haddonfield you didn't blame him for the accident because it was just that — an accident. It wasn't as if he had done it on purpose, the boy sitting here in front of you couldn't hurt a fly much less a kid.
Giving him a small nod, you give his upper arm a squeeze. "I do know who you are or at least I know your name. What I don't know is how one girl might go about getting to know a certain chocolate milk addict." A surprised look crossed his face as he slowly looked up at you, a small shy grin accompanying it.
"O-Oh you mean me?" In his mind there was no way you wanted to get to know him better. No one even so much as wanted to be seen within five feet of him but yet here you were sitting practically on his lap wanting to know everything about him. He really felt like he could pass out at this point but he mustered up the ability to pull out his phone out of his jacket pocket, handing it over to you for you to put in your number.
"There now you can call me whenever you need rescuing." You teased lightly, unable to stop smiling at him. That dorky side grin pulling at the corners of his mouth as he tucked his phone back away in his pocket. The pull between you both was something that was unexplainable, a fire that had been ignited and couldn't be put out had begun to develop between you both and there was no stopping it once it was started.

Proposal and Promises
Word Count: 1838
Life could not have become better for Corey Cunnigham. He had finally left the town that caused him so much suffering. Your relationship has been incredibly healing to him and yourself.
The two of you have been a couple for over three years by now and both of you are so happy together. Growing together, exploring each other emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Being able to show each other the love you both deserve. Showering with all sorts of affection. Everyday you both grew closer together.
Lately Corey has been acting somewhat jittery, not completely anxious or excited but more in an anticipatory manner. You chalked it up to problems at work and took a mental note to talk to him about it.
During your lunch break at work your usual scrolling through your phone while eating lunch (today was a strawberry salad and a chocolate milk you stole from Corey) was interrupted by the notification of Corey texting you
sweet boy <3 : Hi love, are you having a good day? Did Jessi steal your lunch again ? I wanted to ask if we could go out tonight to this nice restaurant I've been wanting to try out. It recently opened and looks good.
sweet boy <3 : We could give it a try. I looked at the menu and everything looked good. I'm thinking we could walk around the city after.
You smiled at the sweet message your boy sent you
Me: absolutely that sounds wonderful love. I get out around 4 so schedule reservations about 6 ?
sweet boy <3 : Sounds perfect love, i miss you
Me: Miss you too baby see you tonight
The day seemed to move at a snail's pace as you kept anxiously looking at the clock waiting until you finished your shift so you could just go home and be with your sweet boyfriend. As soon as the wooden electronic clock on your desk flashed 4:00 p.m. you bolted out, nearly knocking a Dollar Tree pen cup over. Swiftly grabbing the black coat from your door hook and locking your office door.
“Why are you in such a rush today? '' Your coworker Jessie asked, her voice was rich with suspicion and humor.
“Going out with Corey at 6!” You called out.
Driving through Chicago's rush hour traffic has never been easy but today it seemed crappier. Despite staying in a stalemate for over half an hour the traffic wouldn't even budge so the first
place for half an hour. 4:56 . Checking the time won't make it go faster. You kept reminding yourself. The second traffic started moving, you exited and took the streets praying for a lack of red lights. The universe worked in your favor and you made it to yours and Corey’s shared apartment. The soft glow of the string light on your balcony shone bright as the sun came down and the sky turned into an orange hue.
Rapidly you climbed up the iron stairs to enter the apartment via the balcony because you needed a quicker way in aka avoiding conversations with neighbors. Finally, after making it up three flights of stairs, you unlock the sliding glass door, careful not to knock over the several plants and Corey’s red bicycle.
When you got inside Corey was in the kitchen, his work clothes still on
“Hey” he said pressing a kiss on your cheek
“Hi hon”
“I just got here a second ago traffic is horrible”
“I know right! I had to take the streets which weren't too bad but the freeway was horrendous!”
“Okay I've got to shower, I smell awful, we were out on a construction site all day” Smiling at Corey's comment you were overwhelmed with a sense of pride in your boyfriend. He had finally become a civil engineer and was in a job he loved.
“Alright baby go do that I'm showering too I smell awful”
He planted a small, chaste kiss on your head and went into one bathroom while you went into the other
While Corey and you were showering the both of you kept anticipating the evening and what you would wear. Corey knew that he would be loved even if he was wearing a potato sack but he wanted to look extra nice today. He felt very indecisive on what to wear- a problem he normally did not face but tonight felt stressed in doing so.
“Hey” a voice interrupted his thoughts. His sweet partner
“Do you need help picking something out?”
Their voice was so soft and caring Corey felt tears almost well into his eyes.
“Uhm yeah I actually do.”
“How about your brown coat, white button up, black slacks, and the navy tie.
He nodded and swallowed thickly. His lover pressed a kiss to his cheek.
“I'm going to get dressed okay?” You said
A few minutes passed and you both trotted to the living room revealing your outfits to each other.
“Shit you look beautiful…” Corey mustered out looking very flustered. Some things never change. He was flustered when he first met you and you will always make him soft.
“You look perfect.” That's all you could get out. He looked handsome, radiant, beautiful. Perfect.
Corey broke the silence. “Hey we should get going, we don't want to be late.”
Huffing out a laugh you replied “Yeah lets get going baby.” The entire car trip Corey had one hand on your left thigh, your hand over his. By the time the two of you arrived it was 6:03 and were immediately seated. The restaurant was beautiful, it looked like it came straight out of a European resort. The walls were beige and had a gold trim, the floor was checkered pattern, and the tables had ivory table cloths and maroon chairs. For the rest of the time at the restaurant the both of you talked about the smallest things, Mr. Logan's new cats making a home on your balcony, old memories, shared funny stories from your day, caught up on work disscusions, the sci fi movie you watched last night, and an upcoming vacation to Canada. The entire time Corey was smiling bigger than he had before. Whenever he smiled his hazel eyes would crinkle.
“Alright that was one of the greatest meals I have ever had” Corey told you as he finished up his food.
“Absolutely we have to go again, everything about this night is so perfect.”
At that comment Corey sweetly and nervously smiled and fiddled with the ring box in his pocket. The two of you have had several discussions about spending your lives together, how you two would work out together, your values and beliefs, what your experiences with families are, etc. But Corey is quite timid and passive and you never thought that you two would actually get married.
The waiter came to place the bill at your table as soon as she placed it down, in typical Corey fashion he rapidly pulled out his wallet.
“Hey I’ll pay! You invited me out!”
“Of course I did you are the best partner, now let me pay so we could get out and walk around before it gets too late”
“Core that's so sweet but-”
Your speech was interpreted by Corey handing his card to the waitress and tossing you a little mint that came with the check. He gave you a toothy grin opening his mouth which revealed the small, green candy.
“I'm covering tips.”
“Okay that will be our deal from now. I pay you cover tip”
“Deal”
As the two of you were packing up you couldn't help but notice Coreys fingers jittering -something he does when he is nervous but you were confused as to why that is.
“Now come on, let's go.”
Chicago nights were beautiful. The city lights and moonlight reflected upon the Chicago River and the night life was somewhat minimal. A street musician playing jazz could be heard in the distance. The two of you lovers walked hand in hand chit chatting softly about how nice the night was and how much you both love each other. All of a sudden Corey stopped walking, letting go of your hand.
“What's the matter babe?”
“ I want to tell you something.” Corey replied, anxiety wavered his voice. He grabbed your hands, you felt his slightly calloused palms rub against your own. You saw tears well up in his eyes
“I have never, ever been happier with a person and in life than right now and every moment I am with you. You saved me. I never thought I would be alive today but when you came into my life I made the choice to live. I felt like a monster, an outcast ever since the accident. I got used to the feeling of being unloved until you came into my life.”
At this point tears were freely falling down his face.
“Honey, you are so incredibly beautiful. I remember our first meeting at the gas station. How you helped defend me, comfort me at the clinic and it wasn't a one time thing. You have always been so caring with me and everyone you encounter. You have a zest for life and are beautiful inside and out. We have grown so much together in all ways: emotionally, intellectually, and socially. I never envisioned leaving that town and going to college, becoming an engineer, making an apartment our home, loving someone, and being at peace. I feel so happy and safe with you and all I want to do is to make sure you feel the same way. I wanna live my life with you. Kiss you, sit on the balcony watching the sunset, read comics, share chocolate milk, vacation with you, cuddle and watch movies every Friday. These past three years have been the highlight of my life.” His voice wavered from the tears.
“Angel, I always tell you are that you are the best person everyday and the reason for that is because you are my person.”
By now you were crying, allowing the tears to fall freely since both hands were holding your boyfriends’.
Corey got down on one knee, pulling a ring box out which revealed a gold band with a small diamond. Your heart just about exploded out of excitement and admiration.
“Would you marry me?” Corey asked, passion dripping from his voice. The world fell quiet.
“Yes” you answered quietly, still in shock.
“Yes?”
“Yes, yes, yes, yes” nodding rapidly
Corey placed the ring on your finger and bolted up to hug you. Tears spilled on each other's jackets-but nobody cared, you two were going to spend the rest of your lives together and that is the only thing that mattered at that moment.
Later that night when you two were in bed, legs and arms tangled. Corey was running his fingers on the small of you back. He looked at you, his hazel eyes illuminated by the blurred glow of the string lights hung on your window, filled with love.
“Thank you.” Those two words came out as a breathy whisper.
“For what?”
“For being you, for accepting my proposal, for everything. You are the most beautiful, intelligent, kindest person I have ever met and I am so excited to spend the rest of my life with you.”
