¿Qué es un Coral?
What’s a coral?
#SealifeSunday #SeaCreaturesSunday

Happy Corals in Africa!
A hopeful article describing a refuge for coral reefs of the east coast of Africa.
"Scientists have discovered a climate crisis refuge for coral reefs off the coast of Kenya and Tanzania, where species are thriving despite warming events that have killed their neighbours."

#TakeAction
Take Action for Coral Reefs… from the comfort of your home! As a coastal nation, the terrestrial environment is closely linked to our marine environment. A lot of the activities that occur in our homes can make a huge impact on the coral reefs in our seas.
Here are some ways you can take action for coral reefs from your home!
Be mindful of water use 🧼
When using water in the shower and brushing your teeth, you can reduce water use by turning off the faucet while not actively rinsing off. The less water you use, the less wastewater there will be in the runoff to pollute our oceans.
Plant a tree to reduce runoff 🌱
By planting a tree, the roots help to stabilize the soil and slow down the absorption of water into the groundwater. Trees also help to reduce the amount of nutrient-rich runoff into the ocean. If trees are not present to absorb these extra nutrients, harmful algal blooms can form! (An algal bloom is the rapid growth of microscopic algae or cyanobacteria in water, which create a colored layer on the surface of the water). Algal blooms are detrimental to the environment, not only because they can smell, but they can make the water toxic for humans and fish.

Share information and raise awareness 🗣
When you empower yourself with information, you can help to empower others by simply sharing posts on your social media or talking to friends and family about marine conservation. By raising awareness, we can all work together to take action for our coral reefs and all the creatures that call the ocean home.
#TakeAction by using our tips, finding others, and sharing posts like this to make others aware!

Threesome symbiotic relationship!
#ImageOfTheDay:
December 29, 2020: This image illustrates two types of symbiotic relationships. First is a zoanthid that has paratized a bubblegum coral, feeding off of the coral and causing it harm. Second is the brittle star, which is clinging to the branches of the zoanthid and coral in order to get further up off the seafloor into the water column to feed or for protection.

Parts of this threesome are:
Octocorallia (also known as Alcyonaria) is a subclass of Anthozoa comprising around 3,000 species of water-based organisms formed of colonial polyps with 8-fold symmetry. It includes the blue coral, soft corals, sea pens, and gorgonians (sea fans and sea whips) within three orders: Alcyonacea, Helioporacea, and Pennatulacea. These organisms have an internal skeleton secreted by mesoglea and polyps with eight tentacles and eight mesentaries. As with all Cnidarians these organisms have a complex life cycle including a motile phase when they are considered plankton and later characteristic sessile phase.

Brittle stars, serpent stars, or ophiuroids are echinoderms in the class Ophiuroidea closely related to starfish. They crawl across the sea floor using their flexible arms for locomotion. The ophiuroids generally have five long, slender, whip-like arms which may reach up to 60 cm (24 in) in length on the largest specimens.

Plate of brittle stars from the Kunstformen der Natur from Ernst Haeckel (1904).
Over 60 species of brittle stars are known to be bioluminescent. Most of these produce light in the green wavelengths, although a few blue-emitting species have also been discovered. Both shallow-water and deep-sea species of brittle stars are known to produce light. Presumably, this light is used to deter predators.
Zoanthids (order Zoantharia also called Zoanthidea or Zoanthiniaria) are an order of cnidarians commonly found in coral reefs, the deep sea and many other marine environments around the world. These animals come in a variety of different colonizing formations and in numerous colors. They can be found as individual polyps, attached by a fleshy stolon or a mat that can be created from small pieces of sediment, sand and rock.

September Spawning
I want to add that this event was one of the most incredible and remarkable during my biology career and even during my research projects. Can you image how incredible is to see these old and big creatures release it’s gametes (or separate eggs and sperm) to the environment (the water column) a specific hour of a specific night, a specific month just one or two times in the year!? I almost cry when I saw the Orbicella spawning in SAI, Colombia 🇨🇴
Tuesday night, September 8th, seemed to be the best as far as star coral spawning. On the first dive there were ruby brittle stars spawning along with flower corals releasing eggs and many great star corals smoking and a few great star females releasing eggs. Second dive saw more flower corals spawning and many great star corals spawning along with lobed star coral and mountainous star coral spawning.
