some sketches + lyrics that remind me of those two! I was experimenting with a new art style that I am in-between about so hopefully it's not as terrible as the brain tells me it is!
(lyrics and artists below cut if they're illegible as to not clog up anyone's page)
"Yet he laps up the vice like a wolf in the night / He's the left hand of God on the stage / And with one hand he offers salvation to lovers / The other, it taketh away" - Whisper by Burn the Ballroom
"You've been good to me / Nearly worth the hell you put me through... But if what they say is true / You've been good to her too" - You by Sammy Copley
"I know I shouldn't miss you / But you made this house a home / The trains go all night / Giving you time to change your mind" - Trains by Sammy Copley
"They got the call / And picked him up at 4am / And tore off down the road / And all the angels say ooh, ooh / You are all to blame " - All the Angels by My Chemical Romance
"I think I'm done / A million reasons, can I be your number one?" - Millions by Gerard Way
"It's what's engraved upon my heart / In letters deeply worn / Today I somehow understand / The reason I was born" -Fair by The Amazing Devil
"I never thought the sweetest sin could be my saving grace" -Chariot by Burn the Ballroom
"Sing me songs of praise / Bathe me in your rising river / Cause I'm gonna change my ways" - Change My Ways by Burn the Ballroom
"Well, it seems to me what we want and we meet all the same / And that's someone who'll worry about us / 'Til death do us part / Please keep breaking my heart / 'Til it ceases to beat / Please be mine" - When Somebody Needs You by Will Wood
"Come disrupt our silence / This pact we softly made / To keep things how we left them / And leave other things unnamed" -The Garden by Sammy Copley

While i appreciated Christopher Walken turning down the volume of his Christopher Walken-ness to fit in with the tone of Dune 2, it somewhat dulled his performance. He didnt appear to be all that invested in his fate.
I wish Denis had gone with a slightly younger Emperor. It wd hv upped the stakes a bit plus garnered him less sympathy: Walken looked too much of a victim to me. It wd hv played out different to cast someone in their 50-60s instead of 80s and with hair and beard that reminds us of Duke Leto. That wd remind us that all of the aristocracy are related in some way, which would then remind us of when Chani spoke of how different she and Paul are. One of these three underrated actors wd hv been perfect - Sharlto Copley, Damian Lewis, Billy Crudup.

As I gaze at the structural column in Copley Station, cracked nearly in two and held together with zip ties that have been carefully painted over to match the column underneath, I feel my soul intertwined with that of a small Italian boy of days gone by, who also stopped to look up at a large, groaning, newly painted tank full of molasses

okay so if I were to write a The Old Guard/The X Files crossover (absurdly easy concept, they'd be a cracking monster of the week) then it would be your standard "Scully, you'll never believe this—" opening with Mulder showing Scully Nile's story and eventually them hunting down the team a la Copley only to have this be the reason Scully learns about her own (canonical, this show is fuckin wild i love it so much) immortality and end with Mulder stuck wondering how he could possibly try and find immortality for himself, and does he even want to? While Scully wonders the same but also the reverse, how can she get rid of hers? Does she have to look death in the face too? Should she find the team again and tell them that's how it worked for her, as best she can remember?
(I don't think the TOG immortality works the same way Scully's does.)
The meat of the mystery would be Mulder suggesting army experiments in black oil vaccines and/or super soldiers resulted in Nile the Immortal Marine while Scully says, no, you dumbass, field medicine in a war zone is just wild sometimes.
Scully then ends up distracted stitching one of Andy's wounds while Mulder witnesses a compound fracture in Joe's leg fix itself and two of Nicky's fingers grow back. Nile is conspicuously absent but we see her sometimes in the background of public shots eating ice-cream and wearing ridiculously big sunglasses and hats, even at night. She's hanging out with Quynh. Mulder makes a badly thought out Crusades joke about Joe and Nicky and does his panic face 🫥 when Joe and Nicky turn in unison to stare at him with thousand-year-old-murder-face
It would be a funny episode along the lines of Bad Blood.

We Think Similar Thoughts
Lonely!fem!reader x Lonely!Remus Lupin
CW: Swearing, a little bit of mean!Remus but not to reader, mentions of The Prank.
This is just soft, lonely people making friends with each other. If it gets 20 Notes I'll make it a series, not the next post, but the one after will hopefully be a 'She's a drug' part 2. Hopefully being the key word.
Anyway! Enjoy :)
Edit: Made a soundtrack :D
☕︎
Remus has no where else to go.
The room of requirement is the only place he can think of that the others wouldn't bother him. He's hurt, and he has every right to be, so why was it bothering him so much? Sirius tried to make a monster out of him, Sirius tried to use him like some pawn in a game of chess, and then he labeled it a prank and called it a day, expecting Remus to forgive him. Remus feels like he has no one left. It's been two days and Peter has forgiven Sirius, and he can see James starting to miss his brother.
The door appears and Remus walks into the room, the door vanishing the second Remus' hand leaves the bronze knob. The familiar secret library smells more like home than the dorm has the past few days, but the sound of the piano in the back of the room has him on edge. Who else could be thinking the exact thought as him?
𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦.
He peers around the last bookshelf by the familiar grand piano and freezes, you sit there, playing so beautifully, and looking so sad. Your fingers seemingly float over the keys as you sing softly under your breath, he can barely recognize the song. To The Bone, by Sammy Copley. A song he's never particularly enjoyed, but hearing it so quietly compared to how Sirius plays the record, the loudest his record player can go, he doesn't mind it all that much. Though it's still far from being a favorite.
You finish the song and prepare yourself to play again before pausing, "you can sit down, you know, I don't bite" you murmur, and for a moment, he's surprised at just how sweet you sound.
He sits down in the window seat, grabbing his copy of 'The son of the wolf' by Jack London. Your eyes follow his movements before turning back to the black and white keys in front of you and beginning to play again, singing the only song you know by heart just a little louder than before, ignoring the way Remus Lupins eyes watch you instead of his book. After playing twice more, he seems to find the courage to ask the question that has been on the tip of his tongue for the last eight minutes. "Why are you only playing that song?" your fingers start up again, playing the same song as you think.
"It's the one I know best, I've played this song enough to be able to claim I know it like the back of my hand"
"What are you doing in this specific requirement room?"
"I'm lonely"
"How are you talking and playing at the same time?"
"I know this song like the back of my hand"
"Why are you lonely?"
You laugh softly, a gentle smile on your lips as he asks question after question. "Why are you?"
Remus Lupin pauses, thinking for a moment. He knows who you are, he has Alchemy with you every Thursday fourth period. And he saw you signing up for the same professor course he did last week at Hogsmeade, offering to teach music to the younger kids on your weekends. He teaches literature to kids just one year above your student group. It's a fun program, he likes teaching. He knows he wants to be a professor when he graduates, preferably one of the muggle studies professors. Historic literature is his favorite muggle studies class, it always has been.
"My friends aren't good people sometimes" He admits, picking at the sleeve of his favorite sweater. There's a small hole, right where he chews on the sleeve, he notices. "But I asked you first" your fingers dance over the keys as easily as if they were toying with a pencil.
"I don't know why I'm lonely, I think I just am" you admit, sadness twisting slightly in your heart. The room provides you a simple cinnamon roll, extra icing. Remus feels guilt prickle down his spine, and the room provides him with a beat up copy of Alice In Wonderland. You smile at it as he flushes red.
He's seventeen years old, for Merlin's sake!
He pushes the book away as you finish your song again, the more you play, the less he minds it. If he didn't know any better, he'd say he was beginning to enjoy it.
"Maybe I'm lonely because I don't make friends easily" you continue, and it has him sitting up in his seat properly, legs crossed and using his finger as a bookmark. "All the friends I do have never write to me over holidays unless I write them first, and I'm always having to walk behind them unless I want to walk on the grass. I'm not a very good judge of character, so I stick with whoever has the mind to accept me; I tag along when I'm invited, and I hope they have a good time when I'm not" you shrug, pulling the cinnamon roll apart, piece by piece, eating the small chunks of sweet bread as you pull it to bits. Icing coats your fingers, but you don't mind, and it makes Remus smile.
"I could be your friend" he offers.
"Why?"
"Well, you're lonely, I'm lonely, why can't we be lonely together?"
You turn back to the piano, your brothers voice ringing in your ears.
𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥? 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺.
"I like green, it's my favorite colour" Remus states, and for a moment, you're confused.
"What's yours?" he wonders, you hesitate. "I can never choose between brown, and Y/F/C" you wait for the judgement, for the laughter, for the familiar comment 'brown? like shit?'.
It never comes.
"I like brown but I wouldn't say it's a favourite" you stare at him for a long moment before a smile tugs at the corners of your lips and you can't help but smile as you look down at the half finished cinnamon roll in front of you, your hair falling to hide your face as you untuck it from behind your ear. A part of you wants to accept his offer of being friends, but another part calls it a temporary situation. He seems mad at his other friends, the other three boys that make up the marauders. Of course he'd be looking to spend some time with anyone else.
"y'know, I really don't like To The Bone, but you play it differently. It's nice your way. I prefer it" warmth spreads through your chest, the only compliments you ever got on your musical talents were from the kids you teach, but they're amazed by everything at their age. It's nice to be complimented by a peer, of course, you'd probably get more compliments if you bothered to play in front of people, other than twenty-four nine-year-olds.
"Thank you, is there a different song you like that I might know?"
He thinks for a moment before, seemingly nervous, he requests a song.
"Do you know 'Here comes the sun'?"
Instead of answering, you wipe your fingers on the small brown napkin that came with the cinnamon roll and begin playing. Singing quietly along. Sadly, you can't play Here Comes The Sun without singing it, otherwise you constantly lose your place and have to start again. A common issue for you. Thankfully, Remus doesn't seem to mind as he leans back against the window, watching you play.
It's definitely not the exact song, and it's certainly not as upbeat, but Remus finds himself enjoying that about your music. It's soft, almost like if hot chocolate on a snowy day was a genre.
He can't quite explain why, but he feels the need to watch you as you play.
He's always thought of you as pretty, your Y/H/C hair and Y/E/C eyes, and the few freckles that dot over your nose and cheeks. One, higher than the rest, sits high on your cheekbone, not far from your eye.
He's even occasionally considered approaching you, but you always seemed to slip away from your shared classes unnoticed. And you almost never eat in the great hall, choosing to wander around as you eat instead.
He allows himself to admire the way the golden sunlight shines in fractured streaks of soft yellow over you and the piano, the light making the highlighter on your nose a bit more noticeable.
He likes your style, beat up pink converse and your uniform, little things added and taken away to make it more.. 𝘺𝘰𝘶, he supposes.
Your blue skirt is supposed to have silver plaid squares, but you've charmed it to stick to a simple plaid pattern of different shades of blue, your grey sweater isn't a school one, and he can see the way some of your hair sits underneath the fabric, like you hadn't bothered to pull your hair out of the sweater after putting it on; and you have a bracelet on, made out of brown, yellow, and white embroidery thread.
"I think dinner is starting soon" Remus announces. You press a wrong key and wince, frowning.
"Okay"
"Do you want to head down now?"
"I don't know"
"Okay"
It's silent for a moment before you stand up. "You mean it? You really want to be my friend?" he nods, gathering his things slowly as you return a book from your bag to a nearby shelf. "I do, why?" he asks. Did you think he was lying before? The thought makes his heart hurt a little. "No reason, do you want to sit with me for dinner?" You wait for his answer, but you don't get one. You turn to face him, and he's smiling at you sweetly, offering his hand.
You quickly pull your bag over your shoulder before hesitantly accepting his hand, he leads you out of the room and rolls his eyes at the sight of Sirius Black leaning against the wall, holding a folded piece of parchment and toying nervously with the corners. Sirius falls into step with the two of you, sending you a questioning glance before turning to Remus. "Moony, I know I fucked up bad, but-" Remus swaps hands with you, pulling you away from Sirius as he cuts the boy off. "But nothing, Sirius. I'm hanging out with a friend so if you don't mind, could you fuck off? Thanks." Remus snaps, and you raise an eyebrow as guilt flashes in his eyes and Sirius stops abruptly, watching the two of you walk away.
"Sorry, Y/N" you shrug, entirely unbothered.
"It's fine, if you're mad at him, I won't question you. I trust you have good judgement" you assure him.
He laughs and smiles at you teasingly. "You just complemented yourself y'know, so confidently, too" your face burns as you realize what he means. "Oh."
"Don't worry, I think I have good judgement too" he bumps your shoulder with his arm gently. "Yeah, makes up for how freakishly tall you are" you murmur jokingly, and he laughs.
You both slip into a seat at the Ravenclaw table as the rest of the marauders watch from the Gryffindor table, all missing their friend as guilt stings at them.

Loved MONKEY MAN. What a delight of a film! It has a couple of slow spots but it is so much fun! People comparing it to JOHN WICK movies are selling it short. Dev Patel is out for blood and he acts like it. Sharlto Copley is brilliant in his 5 minutes of screen time. As for Dev, man, major props to him!
Cultural side notes: (a) Kudos to Dev for putting the modern day saint in museum level ancient carved wooden sandals. (b) I'm still proper shocked to have seen that the musician was played by a living legend, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. The interplay of sounds made by him and Dev in the workout scene is a clever play on a "jugalbandi", a sort of performance where there is a 'dialogue' between classical dancers and musicians; the musician puts down a beat and the dancer has to 'say' it back to them through their footwork. That scene was so much fun! (What's even more amazing is that they even had another scene before this as a primer, where the maestro plays two tablas as though they are two voices talking to each other. They thought this through!)

WIP WTHURSDAY
It's already Thursday, as usual, because @emmalostinwonderland has no idea what timezones are 😔
ANYWAY! Now that I'm settled with wifi and such, I'm back to writing, and this time you get a snippet from the matchmaker!Copley fic from @whatkindofnameisvolta
“Watch out for Copley, you two,” [Nile] says, grinning. Joe and Nicky have the backseat to themselves, Joe with one leg hooked over Nicky’s, Nicky rubbing circles on Joe’s wrist with his thumb as he reads (he doesn’t get carsick, apparently). They’re always like this when it’s just the four of them, unconcerned with whoever might see their small intimacies that speak of years together. Nile thinks it’s quite sweet (until they start actively making out – she has no idea how they’re still so horny). “Why?” Joe asks warily. “He’s figured something out,” she replies. “Or rather, he’s put two and two together and come up with orange.” “Intriguing,” Nicky says, lowering his novel. “Tell us more.”

Friends Again
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Category: Fluff Word count: 2.2K Summary: Ethan loses something important. Prompt: Imagine your OTP where both of them have a piece of jewelry that symbolizes their friendship, and it was just for fun and definitely not serious. But when one of them loses their jewelry, they start to realize that it (and their relationship) meant more to them than they thought. A/N: This is a prequel of sorts to Bad Dream. Some of the dialogue used is taken directly from Open Heart: Second Year.
Tumblr media
A week before the conference in Miami…
The hour-long drive seemed to pass in the blink of an eye with conversation flowing easily between the attending and his intern. They had reached their destination, the Boston Medical Library, situated on the University of Massachusetts campus.
“Thanks again for coming and helping me with this research. I’m sure you had better things to do this weekend,” Ethan said, parking and turning off the engine.
“You. Are. Welcome,” Sawyer playfully chimed as she unbuckled her seat belt. "And what’s better than solving a medical mystery and saving a man’s life?”
She didn’t have to add “duh” to the end of that sentence. Ethan heard it in her tone and it made him smile on the inside. “God, where have you been all my life?” he thought to himself.
As they headed towards the library, they couldn’t help but notice the large farmer’s market set up in the adjacent parking lot.
“That looks fun,” Sawyer remarked as she eyed the various booths from a distance. A variety of vendors sold everything from fresh produce, to homemade baked goods, to arts and crafts.
Knowing it would make her happy, Ethan couldn’t resist. “Do you want to check it out?”
“You wouldn’t mind?” she asked, surprised.
“Not at all. Believe it or not, I enjoy going to the farmer’s market. My dad and I would go when I was young. There’s a good one at Copley Square you should check out sometime,” he recommended, guiding her toward the first row of tents.
The pair strolled from booth to booth, inspecting all the different goods for sale. Along the way, they laughed at the silly products, exchanged personal stories, and sampled some of the food and drink.
“Ohmygod,” Sawyer moaned, the chocolate melting on her tongue. “You have to try this,” she insisted, holding a sample to Ethan’s lips. Naturally and without thinking, he leaned forward eating the morsel right out of her hand, his lips brushing softly against her fingertips.
“It’s good, right?” she watched as he chewed and nodded affirmatively.
“Would you like me to pack up a box for you?” an older gentleman approached.
Ethan reached for his wallet, “We’ll take two boxes.”
“Happy wife, happy life! Am I right?” the vendor chuckled as he filled a container with chocolate truffles.
Seizing the opportunity to have a little fun at Ethan’s expense, Sawyer quickly replied. “Oh, he’s not my husband… yet. Two years of dating and he still hasn’t put a ring on it,” she waved the back of her ringless left hand.
Ethan snapped his head to Sawyer and with bulging eyes silently asked, “What are you doing?”
“Back in my day, you took a test drive and either made the purchase or kept looking… none of this leasing business,” the outspoken elder shook his head. “I proposed to my beautiful Margie one month after our first date, and I married her three months later. When you know, you know… you know?”
“That’s what I’ve been telling him!” Sawyer continued the act, gently backhanding Ethan in the gut.
Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose and whispered under this breath, “For Christ’s sake.”
Sawyer burst out laughing, finally breaking character. When the vendor looked at her puzzled, she confessed. “Sorry, we’re not actually together.” Elbowing Ethan in the side, “I just couldn’t resist messing with him. We’re just friends.”
“Well, in my experience, that's a good place to start,” the man winked, handing Ethan his purchase.
As they walked away, he shoved a box of truffles towards Sawyer with feigned annoyance. “Friends? Ha! More like a giant pain in my ass,” he contended.
A short while later they found a fresh produce booth. Ethan quickly occupied himself, inspecting and sniffing different fruits and vegetables. If Sawyer had been paying attention, she might have learned how capable he was with all the beautiful ingredients, but she was distracted by another nearby vendor. When Ethan struck up a conversation with the produce farmer, she slipped away to make a quick purchase.
“Where’d you go?” Ethan asked when she returned.
“I got you something. Hold out your hand,” she urged.
Ethan raised a skeptical eyebrow, but reluctantly did as she said.
Sawyer looped a braided leather bracelet around his wrist and fastened it.
He took a closer look, examining the metal charms. One with the letter E, and another with the letter S. “What’s this for?”
“It’s a friendship bracelet,” she explained, “and since I'm giving it to you, it's official now. We are definitely friends.”
“Is that so?”
“I don’t make the rules,” she shrugged.
“I’m pretty sure you just did.”
Ignoring his snark, “Oh, and it’s tradition that when someone gives you a friendship bracelet, you get to make a wish.”
Ethan just rolled his eyes. But as juvenile as it seemed, he knew exactly what he would wish for. “I’d wish for you,” he said to himself.
“Hey,” she took his hand and held it for a moment. “In all seriousness, you know I’m here as a friend, right? I mean… I’m learning a lot working with you on this case, and I’m grateful for the experience, but that’s not why I volunteered to help. I’m not here as an intern kissing your ass.”
Ethan knew from the very beginning that Sawyer was someone he could trust. Unlike other interns who would expect something in return, like a leg up in the competition, he knew she had no ulterior motives. Just the kindest and most genuine heart.
He looked her in the eye and squeezed her hand. “I know, Sawyer.”
Five months later…
Alone in the beer garden at Donahue's, Sawyer sat on her tucked leg, facing Ethan’s glowing profile. He stared straight ahead, transfixed by the firepit's dancing flames.
Having mustered the courage to confront the elephant in the room, Sawyer broke the somber silence that had settled between them. “Ethan, why didn’t you keep in touch?” She watched him take a deep, anticipatory breath. “No word from you at all for two months? After everything that happened between us?”
Ethan took a moment to find his words, then turned his head to meet her eyes. “Everything that happened between us is exactly why I didn’t contact you,” he began to explain. “Sawyer, if we’re going to work together on the diagnostics team, we need a fresh start.”
Resisting every urge to reach out and take her hand when she looked away from him, he pressed on. “Your professional development is too important to jeopardize it with whatever… whatever it was that we had.”
Sawyer snapped her head back to face him, “‘Had’, past tense.”
Ethan reached for the whiskey bottle that he had grabbed from inside and poured himself another glass. The sleeve of his green leather jacket rode up just enough for Sawyer to notice a braided bracelet wrapped around his wrist. The same one she gave him a week before their relationship went from friends to forbidden fruit.
“Yes. And the past is where it has to remain,” he added. Ethan’s eyes bored into hers, searching for understanding and begging for forgiveness.
After a long moment, Sawyer broke the connection, looking down at his wrist again. She thought it ironic that he would wear a reminder of “whatever they had,” while insisting that they must now ignore and bury their feelings for one another. That cheap piece of jewelry meant something to him. And the fact that he wore it now, meant that she did too.
So without concern for the consequences, she tested her theory. Surging forward, she wrapped her hand around the back of his neck and kissed him. A long and gentle kiss. An act of forgiveness, and one that he seemed willing to accept since he hadn’t pulled away. But when she leaned back, she saw the turmoil written across his face. Just as she had months ago in Miami.
“Dammit, Sawyer.”
A few weeks later…
As much as he hated to admit it, Ethan desperately missed Sawyer. He missed their easy friendship. The way she always seemed to know what he was thinking. The way he could talk to her about anything. The way he could be himself around her. Not Dr. Ramsey, but just Ethan.
Though they saw each other almost everyday, their interactions were mostly transactional. It had been difficult to let their guards down around each other. Ethan found it too tempting to cross the line, and Sawyer grew tired of the knock-backs.
The night that she helped him set up his Pictagram account reminded Ethan of the way they once were, before he left for the Amazon. It felt normal again. The friendly banter, the trust, the laughter… everything seemed right in the world for those few hours.
After she had gone home that evening, Ethan opened his desk drawer, finding a cherished item. It was something that he’d kept near and dear since the day he left for the Amazon.
“...how are you supposed to know when you’ve met the right person?”
“It’s love, Ethan… you just feel it…”
He slipped the leather over his fingers and rolled the charms with his thumb, as their conversation echoed in his mind. Then he thought back to the day Sawyer gave him the bracelet.
“When you know, you know…” he recalled the old, outspoken man saying.
There was no doubt he felt something for Sawyer, but was it love? Not having much experience with the feeling, he allowed himself to consider the possibility. But how to know for sure? That’s when Ethan remembered something else the vendor at the market said, when Sawyer told him they were just friends.
“Well, in my experience, that's a good place to start.”
A few days later, Sawyer approached the diagnostics team’s office. She spotted Ethan through the glass windows and paused to watch his odd behavior. He was searching for something, lifting up files, checking around the coffee station, and rummaging through the pockets of his outdoors coat. He was on his knees looking under his desk when she finally entered the room.
“Shit…” he muttered, unaware of her presence. When she cleared her throat, he startled and stood up.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
Ethan tried to act normal, organizing items on his desk. “Nothing.”
“You sure? It looked like you were searching for something. Can I help you look?”
“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it,” he clipped. Fortunately, June and Baz joined them for the start of their meeting, and the rookie team member didn’t press any further.
A couple hours later, Sawyer bumped into Bryce as he stepped out of the men’s restroom. “Oof!” he grunted.
“Sorry!” she quickly apologized as he caught her shoulders.
“Geez, Brooks, I know how bad you want to hit this, but at least buy me a drink first,” he teased, soliciting a roll of the eyes from Sawyer. “Whatcha up to?” he asked.
“Just a quick bathroom break, then off to check on our DT patient. You?”
“I’m on Ortho this week. On my way to scrub in for an ACL reconstruction.”
“Niiice. Well, have fun. I’ll catch you later,” she said, putting her hand on the door to the ladies room.
“Oh hey, do you know where the lost and found is? I found this bracelet on the floor.”
Sawyer instantly recognized the accessory. The personalized charms featuring the letters “E” and “S” were undeniable proof. Then it hit her. Was this what he was searching high and low for earlier?
“Luckily, I know who that belongs to, and I’m more than happy to return it to them.”
“Cool, catch you later,” he waved.
That afternoon, Sawyer returned to the diagnostics suite. There she found Ethan standing in front of the smartboard, studying MRI results.
Acknowledging her presence with a side eye glance, “Did you need me for something?”
Sawyer demanded that he hold out his hand.
“Whatever for?” he asked, turning and giving her his full attention.
“Just. Give me. Your hand,” she insisted.
He yielded and held out his hand.
Sawyer fished the leather band from her pocket and wiggled it in front of his face with a satisfied smirk. "Could this be what you were desperately searching for in the office earlier?"
Ethan hesitated, contemplating what he should admit. He finally decided on, “Maybe.”
She took his hand in hers. But before sliding the bracelet onto his wrist, she looked him in the eyes. “Will you, Ethan Jonah Ramsey, be my friend again?”
He rolled his eyes, cracking a big smile as she batted her eyelashes and eagerly awaited his answer. Then he twisted his lips playfully, as if he had to think about it.
Sawyer squeezed his hand hard, letting him know there was only one acceptable answer.
“Okay, okay,” he begged for relief, “I’ll be your damn friend.”
“Good…” she said, her tone more serious as she slid the bracelet over his hand, “because I’ve really missed that lately.”
“Honestly… me too,” he confessed quietly.
“There. That’s a much safer place for it. Wouldn’t you agree?” she asked, making sure the reminder of their friendship was snug and secure.
“I suppose you’re right,” he agreed, giving his wrist a twist.
“Well, friend, maybe we can talk later tonight and catch up a little?”
“Sure, call me,” he started, but then, “No, wait–”
Sawyer’s face fell immediately, assuming he suddenly remembered that he was trying to maintain those infuriating professional boundaries.
“What are you doing right now?” he asked. “How about a walk to Derry’s for a coffee break?”
Sawyer’s happy smile returned. “I would love that… bestie.”
“Let’s not push it, Sawyer.”

Who talks to who, for how long and about what, in The Old Guard (2020) dir. Gina Prince Bythewood?
I got curious and so I watched the movie taking a lot of timestamp notes. way back three and a half years ago now, I watched this movie for the first time bc I like gritty action movies, and it's a really good one of those. I'm still obsessed with it all this time later because it's full to the brim with well-drawn characters who have compelling relationships with each other, and boy howdy does the data show it.
I was especially curious about who spends how much time alone together on screen, so I coded all the scenes with that in mind, and I found some really interesting patterns in the breakdown of scenes where just two characters talk, where one character is the sole focus, and when three characters talk.
the winners of course are Nile and Andy, our dual protagonists, who spend 10% of the movie's total runtime alone together. they also spend a lot of time with our dual friendly antagonists, Booker and Copley. scenes featuring combinations of just these four characters make up 40% of the total runtime.
Joe and Nicky show up less in this analysis because they're side characters who mostly appear in group scenes, but wow are they richly drawn side characters. they're key players in all but two scenes where four or more named characters talk.
read on for many numbers and much analysis of what it all means!
Andy Nile 0:12:20 Nile Booker 0:06:00 Andy Booker Copley 0:05:22 Andy Booker 0:05:01 Andy Nile Booker 0:04:56 Nile Copley 0:04:18 Nile alone 0:04:07 Andy alone 0:03:31
Andy Celeste 0:02:49 Merrick Copley 0:02:41 Joe Nicky 0:02:24 Nile Dizzy Jay 0:01:33 Andy Quynh 0:01:31 Andy Nile Merrick 0:00:52 Booker alone 0:00:32 Copley alone 0:00:28 Nicky Kozak 0:00:27 Booker Quynh 0:00:21 Copley Keane 0:00:09
(the spreadsheet, if anyone's interested in digging deeper with me)
of the 12 min that our main characters are alone together on screen, almost fully half is super duper antagonistic:
4:26 is the kidnapping sequence
1:29 is their conversation outside after Nile's nightmare featuring the iconic "me and those three men in there will keep you safe" "like Quynh?"
and 7 seconds is Nile glaring daggers at Andy after walking over all those bodies in the church
the other half breaks down like this:
2:14 is them connecting over their mortal families — where Andy makes Nile give her phone back at the end
1:45 is Nile telling Andy she's not doing this, that she's going back to her family — Andy pushes with "we'd do the same for you" but then relents and gives Nile the car
50 seconds of them gearing up for the last segment of the fight — Nile tries to get Andy to wear a bulletproof vest, she jokes around with "is this gonna be like the last signal?" — it's operations-focused but there's a real warmth between them by this point in the movie (this scene starts at 1:41:45, just 13 min before the credits roll)
and 1:29 of Andy looking at Nile like she hung the moon (which, extremely valid and relatable!) and Nile saying that the time Andy's got left "you're gonna spend it with us"
Nile has an uninterrupted 4:18 sequence with Copley that speed runs the same general shape of her arc with Andy, hella antagonistic to teamwork, though the latter here is more of a professional camaraderie than the real warmth we see Nile develop for Andy.
in this context Nile's arc with Booker is remarkably different. their first scene alone together is 1:11 in total, intercut with Andy killing mercs elsewhere in the church, and it's sort of their only scene with friction between them. Booker keeps telling Nile to wait for the signal without explaining what that means, annoyingly continuing Andy's grand tradition of not fucking answering Nile's reasonable questions, ugh. though another way of framing this is of course that he's too busy packing her a change of clothes while showing off his tits for her. as I noted in a previous meta, the end of this sequence is the one time Booker lies to Nile (claiming he doesn't know who the mercs are when he has at least a basic idea, though we don't know for sure whether Copley involved him in this specific plan).
after this Nile and Booker have two more scenes alone together and they're both extended conversations: 3:14 for their conversation alone in the cave after Andy leaves, and 1:18 when Nile joins Booker on the balcony outside the bar. both of these conversations are remarkably intimate for how little these characters have interacted beforehand. remember, 6:02 total of Nile and Andy alone together with heavy animosity (Andy shot Nile in the head ffs!) before things between them started to warm up. granted, the conversation where they first start to warm to each other is right after Nile's cave scene with Booker and Andy's scene with Celeste, so an argument could be made that this was the point in the movie where Nile started to feel ready to open up to the other immortals generally and her first one-on-one conversation once she got there was with Booker before Andy. I'm not saying you have to ship them just because they get so close so quick, but the numbers sure do make it clear that us BoNers aren't making this shit up out of nowhere.
Nile and Booker's heart-to-heart in the mine is the third-longest one-on-one conversation in the whole movie — third after Andy kidnapping Nile and Nile's sequence with Copley, which are both heavy on action and exposition and antagonism, making this the longest intimate conversation in the movie. their other heart-to-heart, 1:18 on the balcony outside the pub, is on par with Joe and Nicky's 1:17 in the van.
there's also a 51 sec sequence during the Merrick tower fight where it intercuts pretty much equally between three subsets of the action: Andy going off on her own with an axe, Joe waiting for Nicky to wake up after that head shot, and Nile and Booker being drift compatible when Nile's gun jams. we're not making this shit up out of nowhere.
ok back to our blorbos in chief. we get 4:07 of Nile as the sole focus, and 3:31 of the same for Andy.
the sequence of Nile going through hell on base just because she fucking lived (laser eyes @ her squad forever) lasts 1:14 and includes a few lines from minor characters. we get 15 sec of her first dreaming of the others and waking up unmoored, then a 20 sec reprise with her nightmare of the first person she killed. the sequence of her driving away from Copley's then figuring out what the empty gun clip means is 48 sec. and then, one of the things that stood out to me the most in really digging into these numbers: just how frequently and for how long the camera lingers on Nile's face in this movie.
extended closeups of Nile with no dialogue and no montage:
10 seconds staring at the car she crushed, killing Merrick in the process but somehow not herself
36 seconds in the elevator
and a whopping 44 seconds of listening to Frank Ocean
that's fully 1 minute and thirty seconds of this movie's 2 hr 5 min credits-included runtime devoted exclusively to long takes of Nile Freeman's face.
Andy's sole-focus time is a little less tidy, because the majority of it isn't precisely focused on her like with Nile. we get 15 sec of her staring at her hand, realizing her immortality is gone. I could have coded all the pieces of the movie more granularly to find all the moments where we get Andy reaction shots, but I also could've done that with all of them and I'm but one humble spreadsheet lover, and it's more interesting to me that Gina primarily uses other kinds of film language to put us into Andy's perspective.
1:35 of her cutting through all those mercs in the church — other people are active in this scene, but they're not shown as people, and the horror of that is exactly the point, for the viewer, for Nile, and for Andy herself
41 sec of her voiceover at the opening of the movie, over clips of the kill floor scene
1 min of her moodily sitting in the car after the pharmacy and flashing back to Lykon's death
the Andy/Quynh flashback sequence that's a subset of Nicky and Joe narrating to Nile is 1:31, so counting that alongside this flashback here brings us to a total of 2:31 of Andy/Quynh(/Lykon) alone together screen time. almost precisely equal to Joe and Nicky's total 2:24 alone together.
further underlining Booker and Copley as our tritagonists, we get one scene of on-screen alone time for each of them: 32 seconds of Booker being drunk six months later and 28 seconds of Copley reacting to the kill floor footage. it's easy to focus on the Andy in a Union uniform element of this Copley scene, but a photo of his late wife is visible in almost every frame. I went back and double checked — only 3 sec of those 28 don't contain that photo of his wife displayed proudly between the kill floor footage and the Civil War photo, 3 sec of Copley in closeup. now that's what I call environmental storytelling.
we get almost exactly 5 min each with the sets Andy + Booker + Copley, Andy + Booker, and Andy + Nile + Booker. ABC and ANB conversations tend toward driving the plot and fleshing out detail about immortality, though a decent chunk of ANB in the "is this a Rodin?" part of the cave scene is Nile and Booker talking about following the money (their first moment of drift compatibility!) while Andy angsts nearby, and a decent chunk of ABC at Copley's place is Andy and Booker's heartbreaking "this is what you wanted" "not like this" exchange while Copley awkwardly hovers. just under half of Andy and Booker's 5:01 on screen alone together is about his betrayal, 2:13 across three scenes. the other half breaks out pretty evenly between them talking about Nile, making battle plans, and just being pals.
has any mid-budget gritty action movie ever done it better? even the infodumps are full of character and relationship details.
I also find it noteworthy that Booker and Copley are never alone together, and they never directly acknowledge anything about their relationship. we know from what they tell other characters that they've been in contact before the events of the movie, probably for some time in some detail. we know they worked together to ultimately enable the cartoon-villain antagonists to do their villainy. Copley is direct about how these results were absolutely not what he intended, and we can infer from Booker's behavior that he wasn't aiming for decades of medical torture either. but we get no information about how they feel about each other. now that I'm looking at it with this frame, it seems like the absence of information is itself a kind of telling — Booker and Copley maybe purposefully avoiding 1:1 contact, purposefully treating each other as mere acquaintances when others are around, because to do otherwise would be to look their guilt in the eye. oh shit I think I might have given myself a whole new meta idea on this tangent here: Copley and Booker as mirrors for each other.
disclaimer as we're nearing the end that there's inevitably going to be bias and error in something like this. I measured by seconds not milliseconds and I wasn't always precise about where I paused to note timestamps at scene changes. sometimes I included what ended up amounting to several seconds of establishing shots and sometimes I didn't. and there are a bunch of edge cases where there's more than one way to count who was an active part of which scenes, like for example:
I separated out Andy and Booker's opening motorcycle stalking and Don Quijote chat from the later part of what was probably just one scene in the script, where Booker talks to the hotel clerk while Andy interacts with tourists nearby
I included all as one Nile + Dizzy + Jay scene the sequence where Dizzy and Jay talk to each other about Nile before they go into the med tent and act shitty to her face about how Nile's still alive
I counted as Copley + Merrick the conversation in the car where Keane and Kozak are present and react on camera but don't have lines per se
similarly I counted as Andy + Booker the "she wants to talk to her family" exchange after Nile and Nicky leave the dinner table; Joe's still sitting there next to them but he doesn't say anything and the camera doesn't focus on him
I didn't try to delete the time where Andrei said/did stuff from the 4:26 Andy kidnaps Nile sequence but I did remove a Keane cut-away from a later Andy + Nile scene
so much has already been lovingly written about how well Joe and Nicky spend their short on-screen alone time and rightly so. I don't have anything new to add there so I'll take a moment instead to shout out to the 27 sec of Nicky telling Kozak to go fuck herself, and also the iconic Joe headbutting Merrick. fuck, this movie is so so good. every moment is a delight.
