In most city builders the unofficial (sometimes, explicit) goal is to grow your city - get a large amount of money, a large population and large tax income, unlock cool buildings, etc - and, while you can play it that way, the real unofficial goal of Workers & Resources is self-sufficiency.
While in the early game you're necessarily reliant on foreign trade to purchase raw materials, even hire foreign skilled labourers, and depend on exports to make up your currency deficit, the excitement of the game comes about once you fully control all steps of a given production process. You go from importing electricity - to mining, transporting, and refining coal for your own domestic power plants. And that applies to every single resource chain in the game, from bread, to concrete, to railway carriages.
What really sells me on the whole thing is this - in 'realistic' mode, the ability to construct buildings purely from money is removed. You can still import materials and labour, but you need to actually get them there. The process for starting out your city goes like this:
Set up mud tracks (the only free road type) from a border customs office. Build the free versions (which is to say, designated dirt lots) of a construction office, a fuel depot, and a road logistics office. From the border, buy vehicles with cash - cement mixers, dump trucks, asphalt pavers and steamrollers, a bus to bring foreign workers to your construction site, and don't forget a fuel tanker to supply your fuel depot. At this point you have a muddy construction site with some cars parked on it. Start construction on worker housing, the electrical substation for the housing, a water pump and water treatment plant (or, just a water tower to import water into), a small store to feed them - and hopefully it's not cold enough that you need a central heating block. Congrats, now get your construction offices carrying out each individual stage of construction in turn, requiring different resources and vehicles at each part, until, over dozens and dozens of workdays, you've finally built a single worker accomodation. Take in some workers, who are probably a bit annoyed that there aren't any bars or sports complexes around, and you've finally, after months of construction works, got your first residents. Now they need an actual workplace - and, luckily, you've now got a local workforce to construct it. Give it time, and this remote patch of dirt will be constructing nuclear power stations.
I feel like, in the way games like Banished (or, more topically, Manor Lords, I think? I've never played it) turn city-building into a survival game, by just semi-accurately portraying the precarity of a peasant economy, Workers & Resources definitely makes you feel like a stressed planner fighting against production itself, rather than your own citizens, like in Cities Skylines or the like.

Hail to the King (prologue)
Summary: Miguel O’Hara is the head of the biggest mafia family in Nueva York, scaring almost all of its citizens. Except you. And that’s exactly what he needs.
The restaurant was on 5th Avenue, between Gucci and Balenciaga. Miguel stepped out of his SUV and buttoned the suit jacket he had on, glancing around at the glittering lights of the street, identifying certain faces he knew and familiarizing the ones he didn’t. Walking into the restaurant, he glanced at security at the front and they just nodded at him as he walked in towards the hostess stand. The girl looked up at the 6’9 man, intimidated as she kept her eyes down once she realized who he was, and led him to a table towards the back.
This was a normal night for him once a month, taking a specific meeting here to discuss imports and exports to the city and the competition of the other families.
Miguel O’Hara was a name that many feared in this city, The head of the O’Hara family, a facade for the mafia that ran Nueva York, he was in charge of most organized crime within the metropolitan area and some of the biggest drug trafficking rings within the state. Being a mafia boss aside, the man was huge. His hand could wrap around an average man’s throat and crush it without flexing more than his hand.
He walked to his table without really needing to be led, the girl placing the menus down and walking away without a word. He sat and spread his legs a bit, leaning one elbow on the table and thinking quietly. Another presence made him stand and reach forward, shaking the man’s hand.
“Nice to see you again.” He spoke and sat with the man, talking about some business.
You were new. Very new. Your second night. You’d just moved to the city to become a writer, loving the scenery and hustle of the lives here. Visiting when you were young was always the best feeling, your parents showing you around and bringing you around to see the staples of Nueva York.
You had just finished serving another table for a lovely couple visiting the city as you saw someone get seated in your section. Walking towards the table with a skip in your step, you smiled at the two men and waved. “Hello! I’ll be your server tonight, how about we get started with-”
“Where’s Gwen?” Miguel glared at you as he raised a brow, as if you’d disrespected him in some way.
“Oh, uh. She’s not working tonight.” You added, intimidated.
“I only order from Gwen.” He deadpanned as you scrunch your nose in confusion. “Go get Peter.” He demanded, to which you began to boil a bit. How dare he speak to you like this? Yes, this was a very high end restaurant, but no one was allowed to treat you so terribly, to speak down to you. Your mother taught you never to accept that type of behavior.
“I don’t think I will.” You answered, with the same insulting tone he did, the man sitting across him staring at you with wide eyes. “At least, until you learn to speak to me correctly.”
“Do you know who I am?” He hissed, eyes boring into you and standing in front of you with a towering stature, but you didn’t care. Big or small, no one got to demean you.
“No, and frankly, I don’t care. I don’t give a shit enough about a 15 dollar tip to tolerate your rudeness. Learn how to speak to people before you walk around like some bigshot.” You leaned up towards him, eyes narrowed with anger that mirrored his.
Someone rushed in between the two of you and placed a hand on both of your shoulders. “Hey! Miguel, hi, how are you? I forgot to tell you that Gwen wasn’t feeling well today and called out sick. Hopefully, our new little beauty will suffice.” Peter, your manager, spoke with a friendliness in his voice, a familiarity he must have had with Miguel.
The hulking man stood up straighter, still looking down at you with a snarl still evident on his face. “She won’t be working here anymore.” He spoke in a cool tone, as if just asking about the weather. Your jaw dropped and you glanced between him and Peter.
“You can’t- I don’t-” You stuttered in disbelief and watched him unbutton his suit jacket, taking it off. “How dare you?” You got louder now, calling attention from the few hidden tables beside you.
“You have a disregard for who someone is, and you have no patience for others who try to put you in your place.” He announced, ignoring your angry chatter. “You start to work for me right now.”
“What?” You and Peter gawked as he sat back down and handed you his coat.
“I do not work for you.” You growled with hatred dripping from your lips.
“Well, you don’t have another job anymore, isn't that right, Peter?” He flashed a look of Warning to Peter and he looked between you two before giving you an apologetic smile. “Glad that’s understood. Go wait in the car and I’ll be out in ten minutes to take you home and give you your new assignments for tomorrow.” he waved you off and everything in your being shook with rage. You removed your apron and threw it at the large man.
“Fuck you!” You shouted before exiting the building.

Do you happen to have a video version of the big fight set to TMBG? I would love to peruse it a bit less frenetically to properly appreciate the craft, if that is alright o7
aw man i would love to. unfortunately, the software i used to make that animation *really* fucking sucks, if you look at the youtube version of the trailer i made for sahcon, you can see the green sun energy and the flashing light atop the command tower actually loop faster and faster, that just happens to gifs with saola animate video exports. and a LOT of the animations in GTOW are gifs like that. (and then i was like, ahaha, damn)
once i get the time to figure out how to best screen-record stuff with OBS and edit video, i'll fix the CORS stuff that stops the page from changing all the way, and get a full-page recording up on youtube, since that effect is super cool too

Mini 3D Model of Rapunzel's Window and Wardrobe in the Tower
That was a long title!
So I'm at that point in my journey into learning blender I have to stray from the tutorials if I want to figure out what I truly need to learn more about so this was that.
I actually spent 9 hours rendering a small camera pan of this scene... But it's too big to upload and I am DONE XD
Main thing I need to learn: HOW TO MAKE SMALLER RENDERS.
But yeah, the main challenge in this was actually how to do the drawings on the walls and wardrobe... I hate UV. But Procreate did help me cheat. Definitely should have applied modifiers before exporting and even more definitely should have exported one object at a time, so they did not overlap.
But we're aiming to learn not to do things perfectly!
And it's been a really long time since I've learnt something this new, so it's gonna be a journey for me.
But hey, for a beginner, I think this is a pretty cute little model to have made from scratch! You can tell the wardrobe was the last thing I did as it's clearly the best, and there's something kinda cool about that phase of learning a new skill where even inside the project you can see the difference!

Nonhuman Showdown Semifinals
Why you should vote for each of them and full art below!
Wood/Woodie/Woodrow (species: construct, by @aberrantparadox, art by @/kurofae)
"Woodrow isn't a human, and Woodie isn't a person, though they do like to roleplay as one. Are they cool? What are they? They aren't even sure. Woodie, Woodrow.... they're not even the being's names, simply names extrapolated from the common answer they give to the question of they are ("....uhm....I'm wood"). They're human shaped but not human looking, with a human heart but not human emotions, they're a machine in a literal sense but also a metaphorical one as they do do their duty as told, but they're also doing it of their free will - theyre certainly a thinking person but they aren't. It would be wrong though to say they're looking for real personhood, though, or to be utterly rid of personhood also - they're searching for something beyond that, and beyond the spiral too, they think. Something like the jungle of stardust they always see in their "dreams".
There's the factual part - as in, they're a wood mannequin made by Merle Ambrose to fight off Malistaire and other threats. Well, they're actually just plucked from Golem Tower and altered. Their concept was brought up before Malistaire went rogue, and then abandoned. Woodie is the golem, and the magic possessing it, and the heart of the fallen champion of Bartleby, and the heads. He is also none of these at any given time. It isn't his heart - it lives in their chest cavity with all their gears, things that belong to them, indubitably, and is theirs, as much as their heads are or aren't.
Their heads - each professor made a different swappable head distinctly tuned to their school of magic, so that their new champion could perfectly and easily master all the schools. They're necessary to channel the magic inherent in other tools, for someone/thing who otherwise has no magic within them. Each head feels different to use for Woodrow, gives different consequences and a different mindset, but the spirit doesn't become different beings, unless you define a being by its personality and magical energy - a common definition. Woodrow leaves it open. They can see out of any of the heads, or all at the same time, having 7-fold (and eventually 9-fold) vision. They don't need any attached to their body to move, think, or function, but they do need them to cast spells, and when in the field its better to keep at least one head attached just in case. Their weird sight also lets them see stranger things, like invisible beings, currents of magic, and other phenomena. They can't gape at any of that though, because they don't have a face, and they wouldnt anyway, because they came into the world that way and none of this is surprising. But it is a bit lonely.
Feelings are difficult when youre made of wood and don't have human sensations. Most emotions Woodie experiences are muted and overlaid with boredom or a sort of diffuse nothingness. But occasionally they do feel something properly, and that is the most vast thing in the world to them. They deeply care about other beings and will readily use violence to keep the majority safe. They're unsympathetic to those who hurt others out of hurt, but aren't cruel. Every being, secure in their self, breathing with lungs and gills and magic, even the evil ones, are a wonder to Woodrow, and like the person who once had his-but-not-his heart, protecting those beings in their perfect imperfection - just to look at them - just to look at them, it's everything, just to look at them...."
Devin Griffinsmith (species: wolf (moonstrider guard), by @griffinsmith)
"She is the second oldest child of Gath Duskwraith and left home to pursue training to become the best storm magic user in Grizzleheim! Saving the spiral was not on their to-do list originally but they love going around the spiral with fellow Grizzleheim export, Iridian (the polar bear in the post linked above). Devin may not know whats going on a lot of the time but the spiral has never been in safer hands - we hope."

I’m looking for book recs for a 9 year old girl going into Grade 4 in September (Canadian system). My niece, who likes Harry Potter, Enid Blyton, mermaids and unicorns. She’s read all the Harry Potter books (I think my sister read her the later ones, as the vocabulary is more advanced). She’s torn through Blyton’s Malory Towers and St Clare’s boarding school books, which were out of date already when my sister and I first read them as kids.
My sister doesn’t want to get my niece started on the Famous Five and other Enid Blyton series because she doesn’t have the old paperbacks sitting around in the garage, would have to buy the books. I don’t want her to get started on Enid Blyton other than the boarding school books she’s already read, because of the truly astounding racism and sexism in the adventure books. Blyton’s penchant for Romany and black villains has aged…poorly since the 1930s when she was first published.
I would also be interested in finding something other than Harry Potter to entertain my niece, on account of JK Rowling being…herself. Niece’s Harry Potter obsession seems to be diminishing naturally now she’s read (or had read aloud to her) all 7 books and seen all 7 (8, possibly?) movies. But it has not yet been replaced by a new literary obsession, so she’s reading very little right now. Even though she’s supposed to practice reading over the summer. So I’d love to see if I can find books along similar lines to Harry Potter without putting more money in Ms Rowling’s pocket.
An offline friend of mine suggested Julie Sykes’s Unicorn Academy series. A boarding school where the students get their own unicorn when they enrol, which combines my niece’s boarding school fixation with her unicorn and mermaid fixations. But they’re listed as ages 6-9 reading level. My sister would prefer to get her into slightly more advanced books, if possible. Say an ages 8-11 or 9-12 reading level, since Niece is already 9.
Sister asked me, because she knows i read fantasy, but I don’t think anything I read would be suitable for a 9 year old. Nor do I think she would be remotely interested in anything I read. She has typical 9 year old girly girl interests. So I’ve decided to consult the wisdom of the mighty Tumblr. Any suggestions for books with a fantasy element which would be intriguing for a “tween” l, and are rather more challenging than the 6-9 age tranche will be gratefully accepted.
Also, any recs for books and series that have ethnically diverse characters and aren’t totally heteronormative would be nice. That’s my preoccupation, not my niece’s. She and her 6 year old sister are growing up in a pretty conservative exurb of a large Canadian city. Most of the other kids they know are also white with a cisgender mom and dad. There’s a sprinkling of East Asian families in their neighbourhood and school catchment area, but other than that it’s all very pale and monochrome.
Older Niece’s Grade 3 class last year did contain one black boy. But he and his older sister are transracial adoptees from Alabama. Yeah, apparently Alabama (and probably other similar states) exports healthy black infants to white Canadian and Western European adoptive parents. Presumably most white adoptive parents in Alabama do not want a healthy newborn unless it’s pale. I’m not saying all white adoptive parents in Alabama are racist. I’m sure there are some who aren’t. But statistically speaking, if social services in Alabama are adopting out healthy black newborns to white families in Canada, the UK, Norway, etc, it suggests there is very little demand for black babies locally, even the holy grail of healthy and newborn.
As for me hoping to find something she’ll like that isn’t heteronormative, my sister and her husband were cool with past girlfriends, I’m not trying to combat active discrimination by them or anything. But I’ve been single and not really looking for a few years now (major health issues, just don’t have the emotional bandwidth to consider actively dating). So Auntie not being straight hasn’t really come up often. And I’m much happier single at the moment, don’t want to enter into a new romantic relationship solely to remind my nieces that not all families look like theirs, LOL!
Also, Niece is a girly girl who likes mermaids and unicorns, and sometimes wears a dollar store tiara to school. However, she is also very athletic and physically active. And she likes strong, decisive heroines like Elena of Avalor (Disney TV series), Elsa and Anna from Frozen, Mirabel Madrigal from Encanto, and Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon (all Disney movies). Niece is a woman of action.
Many thanks in advance for any recommendations you might be able to provide.

Water is also used by geothermal plants for cooling and reinjection. All U.S. geothermal power facilities use wet-recirculating technology with cooling towers. Depending on the cooling technology used, geothermal plants can require between 1,700 and 4,000 gallons of water per megawatt-hour. However, most geothermal plants can use either geothermal fluid or freshwater for cooling.
Most geothermal plants reinject water into the reservoir after it has been used to prevent contamination and land subsidence. In most cases, however, not all water removed from the reservoir is reinjected because some is lost as steam. In order to maintain a constant volume of water in the reservoir, outside water must be used. This, along with using freshwater to cool the plant, may contribute to loss of water in Dominica, interfering with our export of water out of (and therefore import of currency into) Dominica. In short, it will decrease our wealth as a nation.
Another danger is “land subsidence,” a phenomenon in which the land surface sinks, is sometimes caused by the removal of water from geothermal reservoirs. Most geothermal facilities address this risk by reinjecting wastewater back into geothermal reservoirs after the water’s heat has been captured, facilitating a cycle of resurfacing poisoned water from between the underground to the above-ground landscape.
Hydrothermal plants are sited on geological “hotspots,” which tend to have higher levels of earthquake risk. There is evidence that hydrothermal plants can lead to an even greater earthquake frequency. Switzerland attempted to do the same as Dominica, but the project failed after an earthquake occurred due to the construction.
This is becoming a classic attempt at further colonizing the lands, souls and health of a people who do not have much to lose other than a flourishing culture and the potential of great minds , both of which will never be worth losing. Do not let our land fall prey to money-hungry and greedy people.
To sum it up, Dominica faces multiple dangers with the use of geothermal energy:
Increased magnitude and frequency of earthquakes
Inducing volcanic eruption
Poisoning of Dominica’s waters
Toxifying Dominica’s air
Increased privatization of land, as opposed to communal ownership
Energy and resources taken out of the country while people who need it suffer
Here is some more information on the dangers of geothermal power, courtesy of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
It is important that we understand these dangers and organize our communities around water, air and land protection from corporate bosses who want nothing more than money and a place to vacation away from their ghettos. We can not let Dominica become more of a zoo for tourists or a piggy bank from which to squander money, any more than it has become.
The most troubling part of all this is the lack of consent the Labour Party has acquired from local people who are barely literate in the topic of geothermal power. This is another reason why this education on geothermal power is essential.
All of these dangers are apparently worth disaster capitalism, according to government officials and others, who are more concerned with further enriching themselves and further enslaving us with debt in the process — spiritually, intellectually and economically.
We must formulate a means to not only educate the masses of Dominica on the dangers ahead, but also to mobilize those who do not consent to foreseen dangers. We must then disrupt construction at any cost until we, as a unified peoples, determine the best way to continue forward.
For a consensual Dominica, we must ensure that every action taken by the governance is either asked of by the people or consulted with the people. For this to occur, we need increased political literacy as well as an increase in union forces and communal labor that does not seek government permission. We need organization to be genuinely grassroots, localized, person-to-person and communal.
An absolutely horizontal and shared aspect of people power where everyone is equal and everyone has something to offer. We need networks of community liberators willing to sacrifice their time, energy and resources to achieve public consciousness in the shadow of disaster capitalism. This disaster capitalism is marked by the exploitation of national crises to push through controversial policies while citizens are too emotionally and physically distracted by disasters or upheavals to mount an effective resistance.
We need to fight this as soon as possible.
