Sunday Mood versus Monday Mood 😬

This longnose lancetfish, Alepisaurus ferox, was spotted at 1,235 meters (4,050 feet) in Monterey Bay with our remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts. It was only our third observation of a lancetfish with MBARI ROVs, but surprised beach walkers often report deceased ones that wash up on our local shore. This open ocean swimmer can be found in all oceans except the polar seas and can grow to two meters (nearly seven feet) long.⁠ For more cool ocean news about the longnose lancetfish check out this article by The New York Times.

lowkey the grossest thing about adam’s face reveal in v6 (outside of the. you know) is that it so blatantly plays into the “scary disfigured” trope that I see fucking everywhere.

Wow look at how ugly this guy’s face is. Look at how the whites of his eye has turned completely red. Look at that cataract, scary right? Look at how the whole brand & s carrying covers most of his face. Look at how jagged and grotesque it looks. Look at how squinted the eye is because of the burn. He doesn’t even have a second eyebrow anymore. Isn’t that scary?

The reveal is meant to shock you— but not in a “Oh, this guy was branded, that’s kind of sad” way, or even in a “Oh, this guy was branded, that’s kind of scary” way. The reveal is framed to be shocking in a “Oh, this guy was branded and looks dEfOrMeD, he’s kind of scary” way.

It’s a trope I see fucking everywhere. Characters with facial disfigurements/“facial differences” of any sort are 99% of the time used in media as villains who are “more horrific” because of their faces.

I think there’s genuinely one piece of media that has a main character with a facial difference who isn’t either a villain or is portrayed as being “tragically misunderstood” by the narrative (sorry elephant man) and

it’s a kids book. A really good kids book, but a kids book. (said kids book also has one of the few small yet positive representations of tourettes but that’s uhhhh not the point. I just wanted to mention it. Yeah. Wonder should be mandatory reading tbh)

But back on topic. The reveal of Adam’s face is narratively framed as something to make him more evil and scary then he already is. It’s not enough to have him just be an arrogant asshole— let’s give him a purposefully “grotesque” and “discomforting” facial scarring that comes with the implication that he got it while in slavery. And let’s be sure to put in lots and lots of detail when we model it on.

That’ll sure make him more hatable!

For a show that’s been promoted as being “subversive” and not following many common themes seen in media… it sure goes out of its way to make sure a bunch of that media’s worst tropes get included in its narrative.

It’s disappointing.

I’m going to be fully honest. This fanfiction might be one of the best I’ve ever read in general and it’s only at chapter 5 as of writing this. It is written phenomenally, first of all. While this fic is SEVERELY more mature than the source material it’s based from, it never feels too edgy or overdone to me, while also never trying to sugarcoat what these characters do go through. Speaking of the characters… wow. I don’t want to ramble too much because I highly recommend this fic but let me tell you this fic writes these characters amazingly too. Like? The author took a character from the main show who had maybe 5~ish minutes of screen time, made her one of the main characters in this fic, and WROTE ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING CHARACTERS IVE SEEN IN YEARS. Yeah. I mean that too.  Everyone else is good as well, though I don’t want to spoil anything for y’all. Read. This. Fic. Though do be warned, it does go into some extremely “dark” and possibly triggering territories.  (Also, small thing: the worldbuilding is fire)

Au - Penny is still wounded by Cinder but rather than ask Jaune too kill her she pulls a hail mary and yeets herself into the abyss banking on surviving but not knowing the outcome too deprive Cinder the chance to snatch the power and finds herself in the Everafter. Volume continues as is but remove Jaune completely from the mix and give his story line to her where she spends years in the Ever and now having a fleshy mortal body has to deal with the complications that come with it. etc etc.

In the everafter AU, I prefer Penny just staying as an android and skipping over the whole problematic way they made her human.

Her still being injured and just deciding to fall into the abyss works, especially afterwards where she's all alone, hurt, and reeling from everything that's happened.

I'm planning to write a small fic for this AU just because I love it so much, and I've been inspired by @uncaught-coolfish while handling the much bigger AZRE project.

Second I wanna say that I don't like Adam at all I once got accused of being an Adam Stan ( seeker ) there are very few things I like about Adam very few his design semblance theme song and every fight he's been in my opinion is well choreographed that honestly about it

Third I find Adam poorly written not because I think Adam was supposed to be a badass anti hero no I find him poorly written because Adam is just terrible not the good terrible either the idea the abused becoming the abuser oppressed becomes the oppressor is good in concept but bad in execution

Adam in the context of the show is just a crazy psycho ex boyfriend who's abusive there's no actual character behind Adam

We're supposed to believe Adam is consumed by hatred and spite but why

Though One of the problems with Adam actually scratch that the main problem with Adam is that he lacks a backstory take cinder backstory in volume 8 later half Now, yes it's too little too late but cinder backstory is one of the more well written aspects of in v8

It explores cinder character it shows how while yes she's an abused victim she's an abuser she abuses emerald the same tactics her adopted mother and Salem uses on her she does the same thing to emerald

She continues the cycle of abuses her backstory is an open door on her character we get a look at Cinder on a more deeper level but we don't get that for Adam his lack of an actual backstory we get no character exploration on him we don't get that like with cinder

Another problem is the fanues racism storyline Adam is one out two biggest figures in this storyline and that's poorly written itself Adam is the biggest victim of fanues racism his brand on his face that goes nowhere

In v7 in dust mines nothing hints or implies Adam brand Blake just uncomfortable Weiss gives a half ass apology marrow is used to once again remind people hey we fanues have it bad the brand only exits for shock value it doesn't hold any actual weight because it isn't explored no other fanues has a brand like this

The easiest way to actually fanues racism is through Adam the biggest victim of racism we can explore through him how truly bad fanues have it can add depth to both the storyline and Adam character it can finally explain why Adam is the way he is we can finally more angles of Adam character

But instead we don't get that Adam the biggest victim of racism in is just sum crazy ex boyfriend why does he feel the way he does for Blake what is it about Blake that makes Adam go crazy it feels weird

There's also his lack of any real dynamic outside of Blake the reason why Adam is an antagonist for Yang is 🐝 that's it remove Yang relationship with Blake Adam and her have no dynamic no interconnected storyline

The dynamic he should have had is with Weiss till this day it is odd how Adam has no personal vendetta against Weiss it's her family company that literally branded him like property it's her company that's been an enemy to the white fang and has caused the fanues problems yet no interactions at all

Adam had to have known Weiss was Blake teammate I mean Weiss is a celebrity any team she gets on has to be public knowledge yet no acknowledgement on his part or hers

Weiss could have seen Adam Brand and realized how much damage her company has caused to the fanues but nope I don't even think Weiss knows he exists

Adam is so poorly written it's almost sad there's no complexity no newounce no depth no actual character Adam only serves as a means of bringing the bees together his dynamic with Blake isn't even that good

We don't see very much of their relationship Blake grew up privileged with no racism in her life Adam faced it literally the series doesn't do a good enough job about how being a faunes growing up in a world that hates you really affects their characters it's all just surface level

In conclusion Adam is a poorly written character he's good In concept but only really good in concept his execution as a character is bad his dynamics are bad he's never given an opportunity to properly have a good character storyline or backstory Adam isn't spite he's wasted potential because the writers didn't know how to properly write the white fang and the fanues racism storylines

my hypothesis is that theres some fish out there that lives in an extremely isolated environment and reproduces asexually, and evolved so good that their entire life cycle lasts a couple minutes and consists entirely of 1. get born 2. immediately give birth/lay eggs 3. die. if a fish like this ever gets discovered i want them to name it after me. i want it to be called Solanum's Coolfish.
