Found others! - Branmuffin

More searching had lead me to another message board. This one was very interesting to say the least. I found a very well written poem about the city that was titled: Our Apple Devoured.

I didn't get to chat with this person much. I know the handle name was Branmuffin. Pretty sure with the poem and the username, this is a female. I could be wrong, but who knows.

Also found that they are not longer in the city, which was good news. Having contact with someone outside the city that knew about the invasion. Though...I am pretty sure they are not saying anything to those that don't know...not wanting to risk being put in the looney bin.

Coocoo’s Nest - Grandagarður 23, 101 Reykjavik.

Buried quite a distance along the Reykjavik harbour lie several fishermans bunkers. Blue, dismal and not all that appetising to the unknowing eye. Venture closer however and you will find that most of these bunkers have been converted into low-key, and very trendy restaurants.

The Coocoo’s Nest is situated at number 23 behind a blue industrial door and is honestly quite easy to miss (I speak from experience, we asked someone to help point us in the right direction only to find that we were standing infront of it!). As you enter you’re welcomed by the lovely aroma of Italian cooking and rustic atmosphere. The small unit houses an alpine inspired bar and several patterned cushions decorate the long wooden bench that runs its entire length.

Once you order drinks by candlelight, albeit not a stunning choice, however beautifully making use of mason jars, you are brought ‘snacks’. Our snack for our Saturday night Italian-themed evening was grilled bread with turkey adorned with one of the most exquisite salsa verdes I have ever laid my tongue upon. Hints of mint and jalapeño took over and I was in pure heaven- I honestly wish there was more, or that I was lucky enough to have the recipe and be talented enough to recreate it at home.

As we went to order our main course, we were disappointed to find that the lamb dish that we had scoped out online prior to our trek was a no-go on account of the owners only just arriving back from their holiday and on account of them being the only ones with the recipe. So our Saturday night Italian night had suddenly been converted to ‘Sourdough Pizza Night’. Would we like to see the menu?

If the salsa verde is anything to go by: YES.

The menu wasn’t long and didn’t feature any kind of pizza topping you’d see at a Pizza Hut or Dominoes. I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out if I should order something safe (the Margerita with Diavolo Tomato Sauce) or dare to try the blue cheese, apple, honey and hazlenut concoction- the latter being the winner. When in Iceland, eat like the Icelanders do, right?

I’m so glad I made that decision. So glad I want to stay another week just to witness Sourdough Pizza night again. The pizza was sweet, but the honey wasn’t too overwhelming like I feared it would be, and the hazlenuts added a little depth of flavour to essentially a sweet blue cheese pizza. On the side between two people we ordered a full portion of salad, which featured strawberries, apples, spinach, feta and that amazing salsa verde with bonus jalapenos. I was in heaven until the last bite.

The Coocoo’s Nest also offer a limited dessert selection, however we’d heard that Iceland’s most famous Ice Cream Parlour was next door so opted for that instead (more on that here). However, I definitely recommend staying for mains. The service was swift, the food was delicious and if you don’t mind waiting for a seat, dinner service starts at 19:00.

Don’t like the sound of my blue cheese pizza? (#2 on the menu). Then these pizza’s also make an appearance: Turkey with Cranberries and Walnuts and Chicken and Pesto with Caramelised Onions. Delicious!

Cost for 1 JD & Coke, 2 Pale Ale’s, 2 Pizza’s and 1 Salad to Share = 84,000ISK.
