I'm going to assume you've finished the anime and have not gone into anything else Naritaverse wise

So! You can read the novels. Since they're officially licensed by yen press, you can buy the soft cover books or get them as an ebook / kindle from barnes and noble or amazon. I don't really endorse this but I'm sure if you do enough digging around you can find old, still available, free translations like anni_fiesta who did a lot of translating back in the day. Here's the link to their Index of Translation. I still use it since it's the only place I know that has the white day story translated and it's one of my favorites (For Kadota Related reasons haha), plus a couple of other side stories.

(I think the internet archives have the novels if you do some poking around but for Narita Please Write SH 5 reasons, I'll ask you to dig those up lmao)

Izaya Spin Off Translations I don't think these are officially licensed for translation so it's fine for me to link. This is the story of Izaya now that he's been forced out of Ikebukuro, and there's two books as of writing this.

Durarara Gaidens It's some gaidens, but It's also a handful of translated convos from 3 way stand of alley relay, the links use that kaedesan721 link, so while I won't be fixing all those links for you, I can at least link the tag for all of them here. you can probably find audio for this game on youtube, though I'm not sure anyone's like.... fully translated? perhaps? Which ALSO reminds me of the relay manga

Durarara Epitome of Eighteen Histories Written along side the release of season 2, we've got some stories involving Kazane Kinomiya, who's the half sister of Shinra, and a reporter. They have all 18 listed there nicely EXCEPT the Erika and Walker Link is a little messed up, and if you search through the posts you can get to it but anyway here's the link to that story specifically

There's ALSO MiniDura which are little gag comics of the durarara cast in chibis! there should be 4 books as of me writing this. Godspeed on finding translations they seem to be around.... but this post is long and I'm scared of losing it so I'll update later on how many chapters there are so you don't miss any, though I'm seeing up to 10 in my cursory search.

Shizuo, Izaya, and Celty are also in uh.... Dengeki Bunko's fighting Climax, which you might be able to find some stuff on on youtube. but since it's Dengeki Bunko you also have other series... I can only remember A Certain Magical Index / A Certain Scientific Railgun / the other titles in this series as being part of it whoops.

So you've done all that, what do you do next?

Well Narita has other series, like Baccano! which had an anime before DRRR did, which is 16 episodes. Since Funimation lost the license back in like... 2012 it's not officially uh licensed for viewing anywhere, so uh. wink wink. message me if you need more help here.

There's ALSO the novels which... there are so many more than there are for drrr, also available to purchase, though these are hardcovers! Last time I checked they had.... around 20 translated? Since I'm more drrr side I'd have to ask about fan translations and if I can still find them around. But again I don't really condone it since we want more written you know?

Narita also has a couple other series, but the one that's my favorite besides DRRR is Etsusa Bridge (It's pronounced Essa Bridge don't make the same mistake I did. )

Oh, let me clarify then: he’s 93% harmless & i’m saying this bcuz he’s a mafia doctor

Also, let’s go ahead and review that scene specifically! It ended up being long so here’s a short version:

TLDR: Leaving Ikebukuro is a decision Celty makes out of guilt. What she truly wants is to stay. Shinra is not alone in thinking Celty is faking it & thus overturns her decision.

Under the cut is the LONG version:

It happens when Mikado, Masaomi & Anri are reunited at the rooftop along with Seiji & Mika. Celty, now with her head, approaches them to try to mend some of the damage. She wraps a shadow to Masaomi’s leg & tells them all, very dispassionately, that they are to forget about her because she’s basically ruined their lives for being around them. She points to Mikado’s life specifically, as being the most affected.

All of them (except Masaomi & Saki) are quite sad over her words, because none of them regret meeting her. They fondly view her as part of the city. And the feeling is quite mutual.

If we recall from Vol 1, it is said that if Celty hadn’t fallen for Shinra, then the Dollars, which MIKADO created, would’ve been her home.

With Anri, she shares a special bond with also. & Anri attempts to remind her of the good she’s done for her.

Basically, the kids were like waahh celty its not ur fault pls dont go

& then Shinra shows up

Shinra has been studying Celty since he was four years old. He knows her quite well & practically acts like an extension of her desires. He reveals to the audience that Celty doesn’t actually want to leave.

You can’t say Shinra is speaking over her here because the kids agree, SHOOTER agrees. Her hesitation is palpable. Celty doesn’t want to leave.

See here? The kids watching the convo between Celty & Shinra feel powerless. But who HAS POWER? Shizuo. He had come up here looking for Celty. He doesn’t know Celty is faking memory loss or that she has her head, but he trusts Shinra is about to do something for her. Shizuo is Celty’s friend & he cares for her happiness too.

The novels even state it was “the most powerful throw” he made that night, which, considering he just had death duel with his most hateful foe, kind of asserts the fact that he’s doing this with a sort of /greater purpose/ in mind compared to.. u know.. try kill someone (which is was a no-win scenario).

Celty is then seen conversing mournfully with Shooter, saying “I don’t want to forget Shinra.” The reason she wants to leave is because of Guilt. That’s not really the way one wants to leave a beloved home, I would think. And Shinra reads all of that, & that’s why he decided to overturn what she was doing through any means necessary. But Celty is a dullahan so ofc he needs to level the field with the force of a supernatural blade.

Normally, a dullahan would have no place among modern humans, but the story of Durarara!! is precisely about a dullahan affecting the lives of modern humans. It is also a story with the theme of “twisted love.” How do we fulfill both that theme and give Celty a reason to stay? That’s Shinra’s role. 

And Shinra calls himself a villain for that! He knows he’s in a bad line of business, knows he isn’t normal, knows he disrespected Celty’s role as a dullahan, & that’s why he risks his life for it. If Celty didn’t want him, she could’ve let him die. If Celty truly meant to be detached, it wouldn’t have been her business anymore. But she loves him and accepts him as he is. So he made the decision she truly wanted for her.

If the reader doesn’t feel okay with that, that’s absolutely valid. You can keep thinking that Celty has no free will, that she’s stuck in a relationship she doesn’t want, that Shinra doesn’t deserve her, that this is bad writing. That’s fine. I believe ALL interpretations are valid. But sorry you aren’t gonna change my mind over the fact that Celty has had almost all the power since the beginning of their very long relationship (Shinra even describes them like this, saying she’s a kitten & he’s the mouse at her mercy ffff) & that she could’ve made the shadows binding him stronger before she left or that she could’ve shaped their relationship differently over the years but she didn’t. It’s an area for AUs if we wish to see alternatives. & they’re all valid!

Since I’m all for an happy ending<3 I just want them to be so in love with each other it would have all the other characters be like “Ew gross guys stop being so in love why.” LOL if that makes any sense? I just loooove super lovey dovey ships! And Rivalry ships too! And putting them together just aaa....

That’s one of the reasons why I love Shizaya lol it’s not exactly a rivalry but it’s def got the vibes and I can so chill with those vibes.

Chikage:

Over the top, but still classic. He’s a sucker for romance and he wants to make this day special and have them enjoy themselves! Top priority for him is that they’re having a great time.

Acting like the true gentleman he is! He will cheesily open doors for them and properly push their chair to the table when they sit down, etc.

Probably would want it to be fun, more than anything! He’d go for a shopping trip or maybe an amusement park!

Taking lots of cute selfies and purikura photos.

Bringing them a gift (i.e. their favorite flower or playing it off, if he gets the wrong one, by comparing the plants beauty to theirs) – better even if he wins one for them at a booth.

Insisting on paying, getting them home safely and bringing them right to the door until they’re inside sound and safe.

If they’re comfortable with it, he’ll go for the first good night kiss. At least a kiss on the back of their hand is mandatory.

Shizuo:

Beforehand he has asked Tom for advice on what to wear, how to not make a fool of himself, etc. He is a little nervous, but it passes once they meet up and he just goes with the flow.

He’d be comfortable with pretty much anything and would happily let them decide what they should do.

If he had to chose though, he’d go for something more privately and not as much out in the open. Grabbing something to eat and going for a walk somewhere where there aren’t too many people around.

Maybe a gaming center could be a nice option, but they’d probably have to suggest it, honestly.

Really wants to have conversations with them that could last for hours. It’s mostly them doing the talking, but he is enjoying it. They shouldn’t feel intimidated by his silence, he’s just taking it all in.

Things flow slowly. Even holding hands makes him blush like crazy, he’s so incredibly flustered. He’s still shocked he’s actually going on a date in the first place!

He knows all the cool secret places and likely will bring them somewhere he figures they’d love to be. His favorite go to place still remains one of the rooftops with the best view on the city landscape.

For a damn good reason too, the tiny sparkles of light really look like a starry nightsky right before them and you feel like on top of the world.

I can totally see him talking about philosophies with them, if they’re up for it.

The convos won’t be boring either, even if it’s a risky thing to do at first dates. But he’s adventurous so why not really get to know them?

He’s pushing his luck, but that’s just who he is. He wants to know how far he can go, but if he realizes he’s crossing the line, he won’t go any further.

Kadota:

Much more personal than the rest. If it’s okay for them, he’s cool them coming over to his place so that they can cook something. They’ll go grocery shopping together at first, too. You really get to know a person while picking up some ingredients for pizza.

He’s a pretty good cook, but if something fails, it will be quirky and funny. They can always just order some takeout and it would be just as endearing.

Watching movies you don’t need to pay much attention to so you can talk and get to know each other is chill. So is playing some video games.

Maybe later his friends can come over for just a bit. He won’t keep them around for too long though, since this date is supposed to be just between him and his potential love interest.

However, if the gang does pay him a visit, he’ll be quite flustered – even if he tries hard to play it off – if Erika teases them.

Even once his friends are gone, the lovebirds still sit and talk for hours and hours, they completely forget about time and it’s already dark outside.

He is going to walk them home. Will it take him a 60 minute walk? Doesn’t matter, he’s not letting them get home alone at night under any circumstances.

Immediately texting them when he’s back home, empathizing on how much fun he had and that he would love to repeat it. A lovely good morning text is also a highly possible thing.

(1) I’m 90% sure that the sentence before this is referring to momo hating ryou's parents/older brother (vs the other way around) based off of particles, aka if ryou wanted to say that his parents hated momo it’d be like, 親や兄に嫌われてるだろう？ i think… Anyways this second sentence i don’t want to infer/assume/force meaning onto it too much, because vague subject (probably his parents/older brother) BUT itd make more sense to me if there was [riku voice] JUST TWO MORE LETTERS to change it to ‘they’ve only watched’ … EDIT 5/5: I Fucked Up, forgot to consider in-group+out-group in terms of family. I'm glad finals are going well for you! At the moment I'm being burred alive by essays, but the fics are certainly keeping me alive! And that sucks, but keep your head up, I'm sure you can try and get that job again at a later date maybe! ahh actually this one au is from a convo i had with a friend back when my entire twitter feed was just me hashing out shizaya fic idea after fic idea. at first it was just supposed to be like “shizuo is in his mid thirties and hot and has a daughter and izaya is in love at first sight and tries to win his affection and akane’s by being shifty and suspicious” but then the story just... u know how it goes. why the fuck would i outline anything i can’t even respect the most BASIC starting ideas, it always grows angst mushrooms no matter how hard i try

I was going through my old izashin art & i remembered something..

In the actual story, whenever Izaya purposely messed with Shizuo, it was always through other people. Aside from the time Shizuo unexpectedly stopped by his place (which did not end up in confrontation bcuz Celty intervened & Izaya was innocent), all other times he didn’t get involved himself. He sent gangs after him, tried to make him a target of the yakuza, framed him for beating up a woman & got the cops to arrest him, or he’d get away thanks to Simon’s intervention.

It isn’t until Izaya reached a point where he had to commit to truly kill him that he goes after him in person. Even then he knew a direct confrontation was futile & tried to use other objects to kill him (asphyxiation, a crowd witnessing).

Yet we’re told that during their high school days, they had an almost daily run-around the city. & sometime after graduation, Izaya moved out of Ikebukuro, seemingly putting an end to that daily display.

Now I’m gonna turn this into shippy content: What was different back in high school? What were the times Izaya messed with Shizuo directly? Well, it involved Shinra.

Like, really, I only know of two extra stories where Narita actually writes about a direct run-and-chase between them that isn’t the final volume where it’s Izaya who initiates the conflict. The stories always start out with Shizuo hanging around Shinra. They’re having a friendly convo when suddenly Izaya waltzs in & gives Shizuo reasons to get mad. One in the library, where Shinra explicitly states that Izaya came into their convo uninvited, & one where Shizuo had actually been calmly listening to Shinra prattle on abt chocolates (because Shizuo likes sweets).

We can piece through the Izaya Epitome that Izaya dislikes seeing them together. He finds out Shinra has a sister & tries to get her involved to separate them. Tries to make her say that one of them (himself or Shizuo) doesn’t belong as Shinra’s friend. It’s hilarious & ends with Shinra interrupting their convo.

So anyway, it’s my observation that Izaya avoids confrontation with Shizuo directly because he barely stands a chance. Shizuo’s strength is monstrous beyond reason. So Izaya sends all kinds of people after him, hoping one of them finally kills him. But. Back in high school, there were times he provoked him directly, because his jealous ass couldn’t stand seeing him around Shinra.

Seeing Shinra be so friendly & nice to Shizuo reinforced the belief that Shizuo wasn’t human, and Izaya would risk his life & reputation at petty times just to split them. Oof.

Still Shinra’s tone could only be heard as joking as he spoke; and he smiled troubledly.

“But if I could stay by her side… I wouldn’t mind if I turned into something inhuman.”

“How ironic. You keep telling everyone how much you love humans, yet you’re looking for hope in the world after death.”

“Actually it’s the other way around. I love humans, and that’s why I want to keep watching them forever.”
