Now I know how "normies" feel

If you are familiar with Star Trek, terms like mind meld, warp drive, Starfleet, Orions, Klingons, The Q - they may perfect sense.

Doctor Who? TARDIS, regeneration, Dalek, The Master.

Game of Thrones? Iron Throne, Dothraki, Lannister, sexposition (OK that last one is because of the writers who coined it, not the show itself LOL)

So a few days ago I bought this CD audio drama which was on for only a few bucks. I bought it for the title, I will not lie:

(If you suddenly got an image of Robin Williams doing something unprintable to Orson, you have my sympathies.)

Back in the 1990s I played (or tried to, as I found it impossible) a video game on the old 3DO consolve called Space Hulk. It was based on the RPG franchise Warhammer 40,000. Which is in some respects bigger than Dungeons & Dragons (the gaming retailer Games Workshop even changed its name to Warhammer as that is all they sell now). Space Hulk is my only exposure to WH. So when I listened to this CD I realized something. I understood absolutely NONE of what I was listening to. I was totally locked out.

And it made me feel how a casual viewer or a first-timer might respond to seeing a Trek or Who for the first time if it doesn't provide any sort of jumping-on point. Obviously you can't spend time in every episode recapping. But even in most of the Doctor Who novels there is something first-timers can grasp on to. But Fist of Mork had the same feel that people in the Star Trek TNG episode "Darmok" must have had when they encountered a race that spoke only in metaphor. They understood the words, but not the meaning.

Which is why you end up with jokers like me spending 10 bucks on an audio drama because he thought the title was funny.

PS. This is not a criticism of the writers of Fist of Mork or Warhammer the game. I just find it fascinating to be on the receiving end for once and can understand why sometimes you hear actors talk about how they signed up for something like Star Trek or Star Wars but profess to understanding none of it.

So I keep hearing veteran Trekkies talking about how Lower Decks must be *so* inaccessible to new viewers because they have all of those references. But then on the other hand, I think I've seen more new fans watching Lower Decks than any of the other series. Like, I think the canon references are just a bonus for long-time fans. I think that new fans probably just parse them the same way that they would parse any of the other wacky offscreen adventures that get mentioned. I don't think it's the continuity lockout that critics seem to think it is.

Currently, employers are able to hire scabs in order to break the morale and bank accounts of striking and locked out workers, as is the case with members of CUPE 2614 at the Port of Quebec, who have been locked out and replaced with scabs since September 2022.

Employers also use scab labour to ship jobs out of the country, as is the case with members of CUPE 2815 who have been locked out from their jobs at Videotron in Gatineau, Quebec since October 2023. While these workers have gone seven months without a paycheque, Videotron is able to continue business as usual, while paying bottom-dollar to ship jobs out of the country.

Anti-scab legislation will make all of this illegal. Employers will no longer be allowed to hire replacement workers (scabs) during strikes and lockouts, thereby balancing the scales and giving more power back to workers to fight for better wages and a better life. [...]

I was thinking the other day that Red Hood is a compelling character but inherently an extremely high context one. It's really obvious that he's a character who required the two-decades and change of publication history, editorial evolution and fandom debate that it took for him to bake. Red hood presupposes, bare minimum:

that there's an established Batman/Joker rivalry that's been going for a while

That Batman has gotten past the year-one section of his career and brought at least one Robin into the fold

That after the crowbar incident Batman has continued to operate as Batman for a significant amount of time

That the version of the DCU you're looking at includes some method of resurrection, be that the Lazarus Pit or the retcon punch

Ideally, you'd have Dick Grayson as Robin first, because you obviously lose a lot of the crunch if Jason doesn't exist uncomfortably in Dick's shadow prior to his death, but if you had an executive breathing down your neck about how the narrative has too many moving parts you could maybe drop this

On top of all this the story arc also presupposes audience familiarity with the out-of-universe debate about the no-kill rule, and moreover it presupposes that the version of Joker you're looking is specifically awful enough that there's an actual utilitarian argument in favor of breaking the no-kill rule- Can't do Under the Red Hood with Ceaser Romero's take on the character. You may or may not have had time to establish his track record.

Oh, yeah, and it's gotta be a version of the continuity where the censors let you kill people on screen! Nearly forgot that. I recall thinking that despite the obvious scramble to introduce all the priors, Under The Red Hood was remarkably effective for being able to import everything it needed to create the sense of time, place and progression of Batman's character, the very specific point in his development where you need to catch him for Red Hood to make any sense. By contrast I remember thinking that the half-hearted attempt to backport Red Hood into the DCAU in the comics-IIRC he actually post-dates that continuity- was just very obviously doomed, like come on, you're trying to cram a third robin into an established timeline? You already made a decision to hopscotch him when you went right from Dick to Tim, no backsies! There are other characters I bucket like this, characters who I think have some there-there, but are immensely high-context in a way that seems tough to negotiate in an adaptation. Miles Morales is one, and I was amazed at how gracefully the Spider-verse films navigated that, how gracefully something with a four-or-five hour runtime integrated the broader concept of continuity lockout/creep/what-have you into the story. Power Girl is another, and they've never really figured out how to integrate her as far as I'm aware- Galatea in JLU being the closest I know of. I have no doubt that if I were more familiar with the Teen Titans side of things I could start rattling off ancillary characters from that space. I don't have anywhere in particular I was going with this, I just think about this category of character a lot.

Let's begin.

So far we've had four replied answers. Two of which have a number of correct guesses.

From these, we should be able to at least confirm and deconfirm some of the guesses.

First, we'll look at the three submissions which were given information next to each other.

As I've indicated with the checkmarks, the guesses were partially correct. So we can figure out which are confirmed and which ones are not.

The main three differences between Left and Middle are the positions of Decamark, Ody, and Noe.

Which means out of these three, at least one of them has to be correct, or we wouldn't have gotten more checkmarks.

Now, we can almost guarantee that the Meau guess is correct. due to the fact that that meme has been drawn with Meau in it. Bucket is also pretty obvious.

Now, we know for a fact, thanks to Middle and Right, that Noe is NOT the bottom meme. So we can deconfirm Noe for the bottom meme.

This in turn leads to the conclusion that the only other spot for Noe is Top right. since Noe and Deca are the only two glitches present. It is inconceivable for top right to be someone other than either Noe or Decamark.

It would be very alluring to confirm these three. However, we run into a problem. Let me demonstrate.

If we mark off the three guesses I mentioned, you can see that The left guess has no more checkmarks left. This means that all of the other guesses on that page are deconfirmed. And using THAT, we can deconfirm matching guesses on Middle.

This would be what we end up with.

As you can see, in the Middle, we have two checkmarks left, and two open spots.

But we also confirmed the Windows error meme in the left guess.

This is a fatal contradiction, which leads to the conclusion that one of the three confirmed memes is incorrect.

Luckily, the answer is staring us right in the face. In the form of Decamark.

As I said, It's inconceivable that the windows error meme is someone other than Noe or Decamark. So if MissingNo cannot be windows error, it MUST be Decamark.

Next. If decamark is the windows error, It means that any other locations for Decamark are incorrect. So we can mark those off as well.

As you can see, we have two checkmarks left to place.

Let's get to it.

Let's assume that in the Left Guess, Ody is correct, If we put a checkmark there, it means that Flurry and Circe are wrong. so we will cross them out. We mirror that in the Middle. We also cross out Ody in the middle guess.

If you look, you'll see that it would be impossible to place one of the checkmarks.

At this point, Three more data points presented itself

From the coffeecatty ask, We learn that either toothless is Ody, or Ears is Circe. which also means that the other has to be incorrect.

With a 5th ask on my canvas, and the knowledge that 4 are correct, I am able to figure this out for sure.

Unfortunately, with what we know, a conclusion is impossible unless we thoroughly throw our thinking around.

From earlier, we know that, if Meau, Bucket, and Noe are correct on the Left, We get a lockout. But with NEW information, We know that My guess, Right only has two correct guesses. Which Locks us out of our most promising Trio of Meau, Bucket, and Deca being correct (see the middle guess above)

Having windows error be anything other than Noe or Deca is Inconceivable, So is Do not the cat being anything other than meau.

So let's continue with that. And say that Bucket cope is wrong.

if you look at the third guess, we only have two options,

If we say that circe is correct, it isn't possible, because either Toothless = Ody, or Ears = Circe.

if we say that flurry is correct, then we get an unassigned checkmark on guess two.

so that option is out of the question.

Next. we will assume Meau is correct, and Deca = windows.

here's our situation.

If we then assume flurry is toothless, we get a lockout, because both Circe and noe HAVE to be correct on the rightmost ask as well for everything to work. which we don't have enough checkmarks for.

If we assume noe is buffering cat, Circe must also be correct. otherwise we will get trouble with the Ody-Circe rule. However, then we arrive at a lockout at the leftmost answer, because there'll be two unplacable checkmarks

By September of 2023 initial meetings took place between WestJet and AMFA where the union’s negotiating committee identified major concerns with the workplace and ultimately some of the reasons they decided to unionize. They identified that the company did not respect seniority, the irregularities in pay scale and some work privileges were eliminated without notice or rationale.

Many of the union’s proposals were “boilerplate” and quickly agreed to tentatively, however there were serious concerns and discussions around staffing still being below pre-COVID levels causing “levels of fatigue that are detrimental to aviation safety.” These concerns continued into December, when further charges were filed against WestJet for staffing concerns and significant changes to the positions inspecting the aircraft.

Throughout bargaining WestJet has been in the driver’s seat getting closer and closer to a labour dispute. It was the company that put the parties on course for a lockout or strike by filing for mediation with the CIRB. It was also the company that alluded to outsourcing the jobs during the collective bargaining process. ...

Following multiple negotiation dates, the employer decided to further the adversarial approach and delivered a 72-hour lockout notice to the negotiation committee and would commence if the parties did not reach a deal by May 7th. A tentative deal was in fact reached by May 5, 2024, which avoided any work stoppage at that time. Throughout the month of May employees reviewed and discussed the tentative agreement which resulted in an overwhelming rejection of 97.25% of employees stating no with a 99% participation rate.

The union took this direction from their membership seriously. They began immediately providing a survey to their membership to get clear direction from them on what they would need for a fair collective agreement. A 97.25% rejection sends a clear message to an employer that they have missed the mark, this is also incredibly important when looking at the participation rate. These employees are involved in their union and are affected deeply by the negotiations of their first collective agreement.

Brightheart is gonna have to mentor an apprentice. I can see Stempaw or Graypaw getting blinded and Brightheart coming out of retirement to mentor him before kicking the bucket.

Whoever the new leader of Riverclan is, they're gonna have their personality butchered. If it's Icewing, we are gonna see a Nice Mom :) and if it's Nightheart he'll suddenly be this strong, "noble" (do not know what the writers consider noble to be anymore) guy who's always correct and wise and yack yack yack...

Shadowclan are gonna fall apart again somehow or be a villainous force.

Ivypool's Heart is gonna have a servel or Mountain Lion or some shit.

We are not gonna see the Tribe again for at least a few more arcs, if at all. I can see the Erin's just doing away with them entirely.

We might get 2 connected arcs, but I doubt we're gonna have a 4 arc story again, sadly. Too many people whined about "continuity lockout" so now we're stuck with Monster Of The Week.

We are not seeing Sol or Sleekwhisker again. But we MAY see Bloodclan again, or Warriorclan.

Leafstar is going to die.

We MAY get Ivystar, I really hope we don't.

Thunderclan's current youth "stockpile" is dangerously low. Either none of Spotfur's kits are getting mates, there's gonna be more cross-clan drama somehow, or we're about to see ThornBlossom 2.0. I'm betting it on Molewhisker, Stormcloud, or Hollytuft. Or Shellfur and Fernstripe are about to have a litter of their own and the Erins try and squeeze them together.

Waspwhisker is never coming home, or he is about to come home in Changing Skies.

Ivypool is gonna have another litter and give up being deputy for it to be a perma Queen because she loves Being a Mommy :) and that's where Ivypool's Heart truly belongs and I think I just shaved 4 years of my lifespan typing that

Cloudtail dies and gets a huge fuss over it while Sandstorm's body still rots in the middle of nowhere. I'm not bitter about that at all.

Strike vs. Lockout (What ACTRA has been dealing with)

So we all have a pretty good understanding of what a "Strike" is. But how many of you know what a "Lockout" is?

A labour strike is when workers are unable to reach an agreement during the collective bargaining process and collectively decide to stop working.

Makes sense.

Unlike strikes that are initiated by workers, a lockout is initiated soley by employers who refuse to provide work to workers as a tactic to pressure them into accepting the employer’s terms.

Gross.

This is what ICA (Institute of Canadian Advertising Agencies) has been doing to ACRTA (Canada's acting union) members for 500+ days.

Shame.

The mediator found that both parties were too far apart on issues regarding payment and AI regulations, and ended this round of mediation.

So what now?

We keep fighting.

We continue to boycott union-busting brands.

We continue rallying.

And we keep saying "Enough is Enough".

To peeps sharing and posting about what SAG-AFTRA and the WGA have been going through, I ask that you please also share this info as well.

On November 9, the federal government finally tabled its promised anti-scab legislation. When passed, this new law will ban the use of replacement workers in federally regulated workplaces, fulfilling a key promise made to the federal NDP in the supply and confidence agreement.  The Liberals originally floated a limited ban on scabs in their last election platform. After opposing such a ban in previous years, 2021 saw the Trudeau government concede to the idea of outlawing replacement workers but only during employer-initiated lockouts. It took the supply and confidence agreement with the NDP — as well as concerted pressure from labour — for a full replacement work ban to come to fruition.  The NDP has long supported a federal ban on scabs and has introduced several bills of its own over the years, all of which were voted down and largely opposed by Liberals and Conservatives.
